MTV names Miley Cyrus best artist of 2013

Stick that on your sledgehammer and lick it.

MTV announced this morning that its music and news teams have selected their Best Artist of 2013: Miley Cyrus. Past recipients of this relatively new honor include Katy Perry and One Direction. (And, er, only those two; this is the third year MTV’s named a Best Artist.)

This year’s pick should come as no surprise; the channel says that Cyrus’s MTV artist page was visited more than any other on its website, and her “We Can’t Stop/Blurred Lines” VMA medley with Robin Thicke was its most watched video of 2013.

Cyrus isn’t the only one winning accolades from MTV: The net has also put together a full list of the year’s top 10 artists. After taking into account album and single sales, touring, airplay, social media, Internet, and “overall impact,” here’s who made the cut:

'Saturday Night Live' recap: Miley came in like a wrecking ball

Say what you will about Miley Cyrus, but you’ve got to admit a few things: One, the girl clearly has a healthy sense of humor. And two, when she’s not distracting you with foam fingers and errant tongues and several square inches of bare skin, it’s a lot easier to appreciate how good her singing voice really is. (See also: Her cover of godmother Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” posted on YouTube just nine months ago.)

Both of Miley’s strong suits were on full display last night, making for an SNL totally worth staying up late for. Like, really late; the show’s live feed was delayed 27 minutes due to a college football game that just couldn’t stop. (Actually, maybe not that late after all — in true SNL fashion, the post-“Weekend Update” material was pretty weak.)

Miley didn’t quite prove herself a tour-de-force like Justin Timberlake, the last host-slash-musical-guest to come before her — but she was miles ahead of the guy who pulled double duty the month before Timberlake did. Anyone hoping for Sinead O’Connor digs must be disappointed. Everyone else should be pleased by Miley’s showing — specifically, her work in two straight-up great sketches:

Miley Cyrus' latest provocation? An all-little-people band on German TV -- VIDEO

Between Miley Cyrus’ bizarre “We Can’t Stop” video and raunchy VMA performance, the most shocking thing might be to see her stand onstage fully clothed and just sing a song.

But this is Miley we’re talking about! The latest stop on her provoca-tour was the German TV show Schlag den Raab, where she performed her Rihanna-lite single backed by a band made up entirely of little people. Is this all part of the next Jackass movie or something?

Take a look at the video below (our favorite part of the intro is when the first non-German words are “Hannah Montana”) and let’s all collectively sigh in disapproval. We get it: She literally can’t stop.
