'Perks of Being a Wallflower,' 'New Normal,' Bill Clinton honored at GLAAD Media Awards

GLAAD Media Awards went to The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The New Normal on Saturday night for their thoughtful depictions of gay characters, while former President Bill Clinton received the inaugural Advocate for Change Award for his work campaigning to legalize same-sex marriage.

It was a redemptive moment for the ex-president, who in 1996 signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as a partnership only between a man and a woman. In recent years, Clinton has campaigned against anti-gay legislation proposed in various states, and has publicly called for the Supreme Court to overturn the law he once signed.

Nominated for Nothing: 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower'

Just about every year, brilliant movies are utterly ignored by the Oscars. The Searchers, Groundhog Day, Breathless, King Kong, Casino Royale, Touch of Evil, Caddyshack, Mean Streets, The Big Lebowski — the Academy has a long history of overlooking comedies, action movies, horror flicks, hard-boiled genre pics, artsy foreign films, and documentaries that aren’t about World War II. This year, we’ll be taking a closer look at films that were too small, too weird, or perhaps simply too awesome for the Academy Awards. These are the Non-Nominees.

The Film: The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Stephen Chbosky’s emotional adaptation of his own seminal YA novel, starring Logan Lerman as titular wallflower Charlie, Emma Watson (in her first major post-Harry Potter role, unless you count My Week With Marilyn, which you shouldn’t) as his damaged dream girl Sam, and Ezra Miller as Patrick, Sam’s flamboyant and flamboyantly awesome stepbrother/best friend.

Frank Ocean, 'Glee', 'Modern Family' among GLAAD Media Awards nominees

GLAAD revealed the list of nominees for the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards Wednesday morning.

The awards, held annually in three ceremonies in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, recognize a variety of media including film, reality television, one-off television episodes, journalists, and print and digital pieces that represent “fair, accurate and inclusive” depictions of the LGBT community. Last year’s honorees included the documentary Bully, Dancing with the Stars, Beginners, and Modern Family.
