Stan Lee cancels Comic-Con plans

Stan Lee won’t be making it to Comic-Con this year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the otherwise healthy Lee is canceling his appearances after losing his voice due to a case of laryngitis.

Lee created many of Marvel’s most recognizable characters—including Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four—with help from legendary artists like Steve Ditko and the late Jack Kirby. Over the years, his name has become synonymous with the comics industry.

As such, he’s become a staple both on the convention circuit and in superhero flicks—go see a movie with a Marvel character in it and odds are there’s a Stan Lee cameo. At 92 years old, Lee is mostly retired from Marvel and writing comics, but still regularly engages with fans both online and on the road.

Lee’s illness is not expected to interfere with any of his other scheduled appearances.

Stan Lee won't cameo in 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' thinks Ben Affleck will make a 'wonderful Batman'

Stan Lee spent 2013 continuing the ongoing story of the time-traveling con man who appears in every Marvel movie, this time popping up in Iron Man 3 as a beauty pageant judge and Thor: The Dark World as a patient in a mental institution. 2014 will see the release of four Marvel-based movies…but Lee will definitely not appear in one of them. In an interview with Ora TV’s “DweebCast,” Lee admits that he will not appear in the space oddity Guardians of the Galaxy. “This is the one group that I didn’t create,” says Lee. “I’m not even sure who they all are.” So there you have it: Stan Lee knows exactly as much about Guardians of the Galaxy as you do. The gods of fruitfulness rained down upon the sons of Asgard — good and evil — as buzz from overseas ticket sales lit the Thor: The Dark World premiere afire with excitement. The movie comes out Friday, but the sequel to the 2011 hit has already scored over $100 million in foreign sales a week before its domestic release. Slam!

The god of thunder, a.k.a. Chris Hemsworth, was treated no less than a deity to screaming fans who lined Hollywood Boulevard Monday evening in the drizzle to catch a glimpse of the superhero heartthrob. He showed up rocking a crisp gray suit, although a bit intimidated by his own face and red cape in a 20-foot poster on the Hollywood walk-of-fame.
