One Direction's Zayn and Louis allegedly caught smoking pot

Must-List.jpg

Here’s one midnight memory the One Direction boys would like to fade by morning: Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson were “caught” on video allegedly smoking a joint while in a car in Peru. The clip, shot by Tomlinson, was obtained by The Daily Mail and since removed from their site.

According to the Telegraph, Tomlinson jokes on the five-minute tape: “So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days!” As he speaks, he and Malik laugh and pass some kind of cigarette back and forth. A spokesman for the band told the Guardian that he has no further comment on the video, adding, “This matter is in the hands of our lawyers.” (A rep for the band didn’t immediately respond to EW’s request for comment.) 'Harry Styles' -- a.k.a. Kristen Wiig -- stops by 'The Tonight Show': VIDEO

This must be why they call her Kristen Wiig.

On Tuesday, the Bridesmaids star strapped on some truly gravity-defying hair for her first appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s second Tonight Show. But Wiig wasn’t there to plug a new project (though her mock-miniseries The Spoils of Babylon recently wrapped up on IFC, and she’s got several movies in the works) — she was there to impersonate 20-year-old One Direction heartthrob and possible Kardashian family accessory Harry Styles.

Well, maybe “impersonate” isn’t exactly the right word. Wiig is a talented mimic — but she didn’t bother trying to ape Harry’s voice or mannerisms on Tonight. Instead, the whole joke of the segment was that Wiig doesn’t know the most basic things about  Styles, from how his boy band formed to the simple fact that he’s, uh, from England. It’s a fun, loose bit that inevitably leads to both Wiig and Fallon cracking up like they’ve forgotten they’re on television — but if you’re already a fan of either, you’ll probably cracking along with them. Especially when Wiig takes a stab at naming Harry’s favorite food.

Taylor Swift tops list of 2013's most charitable celebrities

Taylor Swift is the gift that keeps on giving.

Every year, the nonprofit DoSomething.org compiles a top 20 list of “Celebs Gone Good” that’s filled with stars whose charitable activities set them apart from the pack. 2013’s top dog, generosity-wise, is none other than the Red singer/songwriter — which shouldn’t surprise Swift fans, since she also led DoSomething’s list last year. A release notes Swift’s work at the recent Winter White Gala in London, a benefit for homeless youth, as well as her latest liberal gift to the Nashville music scene — a $100,000 donation to the Nashville Symphony, bequeathed on Swift’s 24th birthday.

The list’s number 2 spot is occupied by the benevolent heartthrobs of One Direction, who began 2013 by volunteering as a group in Ghana under the auspices of Comic Relief. Individual group members, too, have shown big charitable impulses; DoSomething says that Harry Styles and Liam Payne raised over $800,000 for cancer research this year as well. (So maybe Styles is more than just “Trouble” after all.) Chime for Change and Goodwill activist Beyoncé, Reach Out Worldwide founder Paul Walker, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, whose smash hit “Same Love” spurred a national conversation about marriage equality and the hip-hop community, round out the list’s top 5.

Check below to see 2013’s full list of Celebs Gone Good.

'SNL' recap: Paul Rudd brings a parade of surprise guest stars -- VIDEO

SHRIEEEEK! OH. MY. GOD. You guys, it’s… One Direction! No, Paul Rudd! Wait, no, Kristen Wiig! Fred Armisen?! Will Ferrell! David Koechner! Steve Carell! … Bill Brasky?!?!?!

Deep breaths, dear SNL-watching, squee-happy readers, because even though last night’s show paraded out surprise guests like Captain von Trapp did his children in The Sound of Music Live & Condensed, the strong sketches that opened the evening quickly led to lackluster ones with diminishing returns that didn’t effectively showcase host Paul Rudd nor had any particularly inspired ideas (there are exceptions, of course — more on those below). Paul Rudd and One Direction take on 'Saturday Night Live': Talk about it here!

In this corner: Charming, charismatic, boyishly handsome Paul Rudd, a potential vampire who successfully made the transition from rom-coms to quirkier comedies long before tonight’s musical guests had anything approaching fame. In this corner: The charming, charismatic, boyishly handsome members of One Direction, a lad band with an army of tweenage fans and the power to make even curmudgeons admit that its songs sure are catchy.

Which of these two will rule the roost at Saturday Night Live tonight? The obvious answer is Rudd. He’s a veteran SNL host with two other stints under his belt already, a talented improviser who’s won membership into a number of exclusive comedic fraternities, and, oh yeah, a lead in one of winter’s biggest movies: Anchorman 2, of which you may be ignorant only if you’ve somehow stayed away from the Internet and television and movie theaters and well-traveled roads for the past few months. Given the film’s nonstop promotional campaign and the backgrounds of Rudd’s co-stars — one starred on an NBC sitcom for seven season, another was a cast member on SNL for just as long, and the third both played the first one’s best buddy on said sitcom and had a brief stint on SNL as well — it’s also almost inevitable that Rudd’s hosting gig will come complete with cameos from Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, and Dave Koechner. (In my dream world, Christina Applegate is there too.) A lineup like that would certainly push the night in Rudd’s favor.

But don’t discount Simon Cowell’s most successful pet project. The boys were the stealth stars of Rudd’s promos earlier this week, and they too have SNL experience. Last time they were on the show, they even threw on history’s worst wigs and fake mustaches to play a quintet of visitors to the Manuel Ortiz Show:

How do Tumblr's Entertainers of the Year compare to ours?

Tumblr-EOY.jpg

If we sat all the millions of Tumblr users with their 150 million-plus blogs in one room and asked them to compile their list of this year’s top entertainers, it would look like this:

UtterChaos.

Fine, bad idea. Instead, the minds at Tumblr HQ compiled a 2013 Year in Review, listing the top reblogged names in each category, including actors, actresses, bands, and solo artists.

But we at EW HQ have a bone to pick with Tumblr users: Out of the 100 entertainers listed as the most popular, only three names match our list: Jennifer Lawrence, Miley Cyrus, and Macklemore. With that discovery, we figured we’d take a closer look and investigate the differences between our picks and those of Tumblr-ers. Below, our findings:

Boy Band Battle -- Day 5: Which group has the best live performances?

Between NSYNC reuniting (however briefly) and the One Direction documentary hitting theaters this weekend, EW’s PopWatch is getting a serious wave of nostalgia—and the urge to revive one of the most important debates: What is the all-time greatest boy band?

Any good fan girl (or guy!) knows this debate is about so much more than just the hits; there’s things like group appearance, harmonies, music videos and dance moves to consider. While an EW writer will be advocating for each, the final decision is up to you. Each day a band wins the vote, they’ll receive a point. At the end of a week, whichever band has the most points will be declared EW’s Ultimate Boy Band.

Yesterday, Backstreet Boys beat out the others for Best Vocals (Harmonizing). Will it be a clean sweep for Nick, Brian, Howie, AJ and Kevin? The final category is Best Live Performance. Check back on Tuesday for the final results.  READ FULL STORY

On the scene: One Direction fans wait days outside for entrance to 'Today' concert

Note to morning shows: You don’t want to mess with fangirls.

Hundreds of excited teenage girls have spent the past few days camped out at Rockefeller Center in New York City, eager to snag a spot at One Direction’s Today show concert taking place Friday morning. But when EW went to check out the scene around 5:00 p.m. Thursday night, the rain-drenched girls (and their moms!) at the front of the line weren’t exactly upbeat. The problem? Due to the out-of-control nature of so many people being contained in groups by metal rails, the guards seemingly got overwhelmed and had just given out wristbands (which gives the wearer VIP, front-of-the-crowd access) to fans who, according to some, had cut in line. The only thing worse than waiting out for two-plus nights to see Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson in person? Waiting out in the rain – and then not getting in.

A rep for the Today show clarified in an email to EW, “As we’ve done in the past, due to the tremendous response from fans, we handed out wrist bands on a first-come first-serve basis to give fans a break from having to wait in the line.  We needed to use this process per NYPD’s recommendation to alleviate street crowding.  We understand how exciting this is for fans and we want to accommodate as many as possible on the Plaza.  We apologize to those who did not receive wristbands, but hope they can stay and enjoy the show.”

“I love my daughter, but if I told you what I did to get here, you’d think I was crazy,” said visibly frustrated Marjory Pante, a mom to two excited teens. “I drove two hours from Cape May County [New Jersey], got on a bus, sat on a bus for two hours, booked a hotel room to stay overnight so my girls could take a shower before the show, and they weren’t even 300 people deep into this line and people cut the line today and got wristbands. … My daughters love [One Direction] and it’s breaking my heart that they spent the night out here, they’re probably going to end up sick. I turned down a job interview to come here, so I could have had a job! I’m unemployed and been trying to get a job and I had to turn down a job interview to come and do this.” READ FULL STORY
