'Castle,' 'Once Upon a Time,' 'Scandal': Which TV couple has the best music theme?

There’s some outstanding music on TV right now — the proof lies in EW’s own TV Jukebox. But not all great TV music has words, and for that proof, I ask you to listen below to three instrumental scores that I can’t seem to get out of my head. Nor would I want to.

The music cues below — from Scandal, Once Upon a Time and Castle — were all brought to my attention in the last year or so because they accompanied scenes with three of my favorite TV couples (respectively, Fitz/Olivia, Snow/Charming, and Castle/Beckett) and continue to be part of these couples’ stories in this current TV season. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. Every time I hear them featured over a brand new scene, they are the cherry on top of the moment.

In fact, if asked, I probably couldn’t possibly pick a favorite among them, but that said, I invite you to do so. I’m very curious which comes out on top in your book. READ FULL STORY

This week's cover: 'Once Upon a Time' plans a wild ride

In this week’s Entertainment Weekly, we take Once Upon a Time showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz to Disneyland as we get the scoop on the ABC hit’s second season and beyond. While checking out Walt’s traditional versions of Once‘s iconic characters like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, the writer-producers reveal how their gleefully revisionist fairy tale series will become the ultimate TV mashup of wildly different people and locations from various fictional sources — not unlike the park itself. Fairy tales were just the beginning.

“It’s like when you were young and had Star Wars figures and you mixed them with G.I. Joe,” Kitsis says. “Cobra and Darth Vader might not have known each other, but they do in my backyard. We’ve taken the principle of being 12-year-old boys and we’ve brought it to primetime.”

Sunday night TV smackdown: Fox vs. ABC

On Sunday, Sept. 30, tune in for a feud as old as time itself: Fox vs. ABC.  That’s right, Popwatchers, it’s the start of another fall TV season, and with it comes the heartrending decision that cuts to our core: which shows to watch live?

As if having to choose between The X-Factor and The Voice wasn’t terrible enough, on Sundays from 8-10pm you’ll have to pick either Fox’s animated comedy block or ABC’s dramatic pairing of Once Upon a Time and Revenge.  The Fox lineup boasts some entrenched heavyweights – The Simpsons, Family Guy, and American Dad – and an acclaimed young buck, Bob’s Burgers.  ABC, in the other corner, features two welterweight dramas whose first seasons were among the network’s most popular in years.

Don’t forget your aprons, PopWatchers, because this battle royale is about to get messy.

Fox or ABC?  Comedy or Drama?  Animation or Live-Action?  Cast your vote and make your voice heard.

'Once Upon a Time': Which fairy tales will get the spotlight next season?

After seven months of twisty plotting, sly Lost references, and much-improved CGI sets, the first chapter of Once Upon a Time ends tonight. Before the finale, EW interviewed both the charming Josh Dallas and the show’s executive producers — and according to their teases, we’re in for a giant game-changer that will forever alter lives in both Storybrooke and Fairy Land.

But even though I’m itching to know whether Emma will finally start believing in the curse and how the dearly departed Sheriff Skinnyjeans will factor into tonight’s episode, I’d like to table those questions and look even further ahead. Specifically, let’s talk about which fairy tale characters and creatures might appear in Once‘s second year.

Okay, point of clarification: The stories that inspire Once Upon a Time aren’t all technically fairy tales. The Genie who would become Once‘s Magic Mirror comes from the French translation of One Thousand and One Nights. Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket, and the Mad Hatter were born in famous children’s novels. King Midas is a creature of Greek mythology. Basically, any fantastical tale that’s a) in the public domain or b) the muse for a Disney movie is fair game on this show — meaning that anyone from Jack (of beanstalk fame) to the Aristocats could show up in season 2.

So where might Once Upon a Time look for some sophomore-season inspiration?
