Loki fans, rejoice: Here's an entire movie about him

Few comic book characters have received a bigger boost from a movie adaptation than Loki, Son of Odin. Before 2011’s Thor, Loki was generally rendered as a malicious grinning creep, a “trickster” bad guy with less substance than a season-3 Adam West Batman villain.

There were occasional exceptions–but nothing that ever matched the geekosphere-spanning depth charge of Tom Hiddleston’s scene-stealing performance. Hiddleston gave Loki an air of dreamy-tragic cool–he’s Asgard’s rebel without a cause–and then Avengers gave Hiddleston a greatest-hits selection of villainous one-liners. The character was practically the co-lead in Thor: The Dark World–and in a franchise that’s shockingly low on even halfway decent villains, he’s arguably just as important for the ongoing health of the onscreen Marvelverse as any of the non-Downey superheroes. Tom Hiddleston wrote an email to Joss Whedon and it's predictably charming

Beloved British person Tom Hiddleston has spent the last few years stealing movies from superheroes while playing trickster god/Tumblr boyfriend Loki. Although the character debuted in 2011’s Thor, he only really went Full Big Bad in 2012’s The Avengers, where he led a merry assault on the heroes of Earth and got to say the phrase “mewling quim.”

Hiddleston clearly sensed that the Avengers script was something special, writing Joss Whedon an effusive email after he read the screenplay for the first time. Business Insider published a copy of that email (excerpted from a biography of Whedon that hits stores on Friday) and Hiddleston’s joy jumps off the page. READ FULL STORY

Tom Hiddleston reveals he wanted to play Thor, not Loki -- VIDEO

Would a Loki played by any other English actor be as dark and dastardly?

Tom Hiddleston revealed that Loki, nemesis of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, wasn’t his first choice. He originally auditioned for the role of Thor, he told Chelsea Handler on last night’s Chelsea Lately. Hiddleston even beefed up for the Thor try-outs, bulking up from 180 lbs. to 198 lbs., to which Handler replied, “I mean it was pretty stupid to do that before the audition.”

But try as he might, the hammer-wielding, prince of Asgard role just wasn’t meant to be. “They were always looking for Loki as well, and I think — the closer I got, they were like, ‘Actually, you should play the bad guy,'” he said.

Handler seemed more concerned with the actor’s bodily transformation and physical stats. Her assessment? “You’re good, everything’s good.” We concur.

Tom Hiddleston fans petition for Loki film

Loki has an army (of fans, not destructive alien beings, thankfully), and that army wants a Loki movie.

Launched in July following an overwhelmingly popular appearance by the character at Comic Con, the “Free Loki” Change.org petition is nearing its goal for 20,000 signatures in support of a film starring Tom Hiddleston as Loki, the villain he portrayed in ThorThe Avengers and the upcoming Thor: The Dark World.
