Justin Timberlake to announce plans for Myspace on my birthday. The gift? He's considering a talent show.

I love singing competition shows (I also hate having friends, which works out great). So Justin Timberlake’s rumored plans for a possible Myspace talent show have me intrigued.

The singer/serious actor’s manager Johnny Wright told THR that a talent competition could be in the plans for the Myspace facelift project Timberlake recently signed on for, that will focus on making the social networking elder a destination and platform for new and existing artists. Official plans will be announced at an Aug. 17 press conference, where he will also likely wish me a happy birthday (a dream elf confirms to me).

In all seriousness, word of a possible competition worries me a little bit. READ FULL STORY »

'Friends With Benefits'/'No Strings Attached' mash-up trailer: Same premise... same movie?!

If you saw the trailer for the upcoming Justin Timberlake/Mila Kunis comedy Friends with Benefits and thought to yourself, “Hmm, haven’t I seen this before, except it starred Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman and it was called No Strings Attached?”, we wouldn’t blame you, friend-o! In fact, you needn’t look further than the meticulously edited FWB/NSA mash-up trailer of the two 2011 comedies to see that just about everything from the glossy love affairs that don’t end in bitterness to the wacky sidekicks to even wackier parents, is strikingly similar. To be fair, we can’t really say how much Friends With Benefits resembles No Strings Attached, since the former has yet to hit the big screen yet (we’ll have to wait until July 22). But as long as the line “I’m warning you, if you take one step closer, I’m never letting you go” doesn’t wind up in Friends With Benefits, I’ll automatically consider it the better of the two.

Watch the full trailer below and see if you can tell the difference between the flicks. Tell me PopWatchers, is this the best been-there-done-that trailer this year or does that title still belong to the Hangover 1 and 2 mash-up? I smell a new Golden Trailer category! READ FULL STORY »

Which critically panned movies, like 'Bad Teacher,' did you enjoy despite harsh reviews?

Perhaps it was because I was going in with low expectations (as I happily admitted to you PopWatchers on Friday, I was going for the sole purpose of furthering my crush on Jason Segel). But much to my surprise — despite critics’ displeasure for it, including our own Owen Gleiberman — I didn’t hate Bad Teacher. In fact, it made me laugh-out-loud quite a few times, though reviews had warned me otherwise.

Was it my favorite movie this year? Hardly. Did it do any favors whatsoever for Justin Timberlake’s still-blossoming acting career? Not especially. Did it come across as a secondhand offering of the far superior Bad Santa? Sort of. READ FULL STORY »

Justin Timberlake razzes Justin Bieber, himself in unaired 'Saturday Night Live' sketch

Justin Timberlake isn’t the first pop star to aspire to be a movie star. There was Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Madonna… and Mozart? In a rehearsal sketch that somehow did not make the broadcast of Saturday Night Live‘s season finale, Timberlake dons a powdered wig to portray the classical composer, a former member of “ze Austrian Mouse Club” who wants to be taken seriously in other fields besides music. Call him a hipster, accuse him of fronting, but do not threaten to abandon him in order to hang with Wolfgang Amadeus Bieber! (Says Mozart of the teen sensation: “Why don’t you just put a wig on a chipmunk and train it to act like a black man?”) Take a look. READ FULL STORY »

Justin Timberlake 'SNL' season finale promos remind us these promos CAN be funny

Justin Timberlake hosts the season finale of Saturday Night Live this weekend with Lady Gaga, and he teams up with his “D–k in a Box”/“Motherlover” cohort Andy Samberg for a new set of promos. Watch them below. Timberlake already has two Emmys courtesy of SNL – Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for ”D— in a Box” and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his 2009 hosting gig. (“Motherlover” earned him another nomination.) How excited are you to see what they come up with next? (After watching the promos, anyone else hoping it involves drag?) READ FULL STORY »

Judgment Day is now 11 days away, ruining our pop-culture plans

The end, or so we’ve been told by a spirited fellow in Times Square, is apparently very much nigh. In fact, Judgment Day is scheduled for May 21, 2011. So unless our calculations our way off, that means we’ve only got 11 days until the Rapture. Aw, maaaaan.

This is a bummer for a number of reasons, besides the whole you and everyone you know and the whole world going out in a blaze of fire and brimstone. Not only will this have made the John Cusack, everything-goes-boom flick 2012 totally pointless and silly (see photo: Not at all implausible scenario of what could have happened a year from now!) but it completely screws up other things on our pop culture agenda.  READ FULL STORY »

Lady Gaga joins Justin Timberlake on 'Saturday Night Live' season finale. Talk about a must-see!

What do you get when you combine one of Saturday Night Live‘s best hosts with one of Saturday Night Live‘s most interesting musical guests? Why, probably the most anticipated episode of Saturday Night Live in quite some time! Not only is the NBC sketch comedy series blessing us with a Tina Fey hosting stint May 7, but they’re also closing the season with Justin Timberlake — with Lady Gaga as musical guest. That’s right: The singer is set to return to the SNL stage for the first time since performing 2009, but I’m left hoping she’ll also enjoy some comedic airtime during the show.

Because, really, SNL writers, it’s time: We need to see a Lady Gaga-Stefon skit. READ FULL STORY »

Is Justin Timberlake already a 'Saturday Night Live' all-timer?

ick

Justin Timberlake is not yet a Five-Timer when it comes to hosting Saturday Night Live (he’s hosted just three times), but he’s already established himself as one of the show’s best all-time guests since his first solo gig in 2003. So you can imagine the excitement that percolated when a tweet from SNL (that was quickly removed) indicated that Timberlake would host this May, sometime after Tina Fey’s May 7 performance.

So where does Timberlake currently rank in the pantheon of SNL hosts? He’s certainly one of the most versatile, killing in digital shorts (“D— in a Box“), dance numbers (“Single Ladies”), skits (Barry Gibb), and Weekend Update. (He also sings, from time to time.) At this point, he can pretty much do the entire show in two minutes or less. READ FULL STORY »

Who should host next year's Oscars?

next-oscar-hostImage Credit: A.M.P.A.S.We know, some of you aren’t done debating how well Anne Hathaway and James Franco did, but considering commenters in our Oscars live blog were already looking ahead to 2012 during last night’s ceremony, we think it’s a fair question: Who should host next year’s Oscars? Justin Timberlake turns 30, is far more successful than I predicted. When did you get it wrong?

justin-timberlakeImage Credit: Steve Granitz/WireImage.com; Bernhard Kuhmstedt/Retna Ltd.I remember watching ‘N SYNC’s “Tearin’ Up My Heart” music video on Total Request Live back in 1998 and thinking that the skinny, blond, curly-haired kid would be the least popular member of the band. And boy, today, on Justin Timberlake’s 30th birthday, am I eating crow or what? During Timberlake’s 30 short years on Earth, he’s managed to anchor a hit boy-band, break out with two massively successful — and artistically impressive — albums, become a Saturday Night Live all-star, and appear in an Oscar-nominated film. All this made me wonder: Which pop culture predictions do you wish you could take back? READ FULL STORY »
