Quick! China needs suggestions for 'Western courtroom dramas' and action films

The Chinese have decided they need to be reminded that good always triumphs over evil, and no one does good-over-evil better than the Home of the Brave. I mean, there’s a reason Superman said, “Truth, justice, and the American way.”

That’s the takeaway at least from a recent Beijing panel hosted by the National People’s Congress in which Chinese politician Huang Qifan encouraged his country’s judges to seek out “hero-driven foreign action films” and “Western courtroom dramas” in order to better control their own emotions while deciding cases, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

I know what you’re thinking: This is totally understandable. Also: Why didn’t they make any specific suggestions?

If you’re reading this in China, no worries. Here is a list of three top choices to brush up on if you’re heading up against a foreign hero and/or into a Western courtroom. What else should make the cut?

Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Channing Tatum, and more: Which Sexiest Man Alive was the sexiest at the Oscars? -- POLL

Sexiest-Men_510x317.jpg

Despite the shiny hair and even shinier dresses of Hollywood’s leading ladies at last night’s Oscars, I found my eye wandering to the dapper leading men. Whether the actors were dancing on stage, growing sophisticated beards, or winning major awards, as my eye wandered I realized what many of these handsome men had in common: seven of them had been named People’s Sexiest Man Alive. Denzel Washington earned the title in 1996, George Clooney in 1997, Richard Gere in 1999, Ben Affleck in 2002, Clooney again in 2006, Hugh Jackman in 2008, Bradley Cooper in 2011, and Channing Tatum in 2012.

So which of the Sexiest Men Alive was the sexiest last night? Were you struck by Clooney’s beard, Cooper’s slicked-back hair, Washington’s ageless charm, Jackman’s chivalry, Affleck’s tears, Tatum’s dance moves, or Gere’s glasses? Cast your vote in the poll below!

Leonardo DiCaprio and the easy money of foreign commercials

“I’m trying to make movies in my life … that last longer than opening weekend. That’s it, that’s my whole goal. I don’t have to make money; I do films for scale and then, you know, I go do coffee commercials overseas, and I make a lot of money so I get to live in a nice house. … And I don’t give a sh-t. And people will go, ‘Oh that’s a sellout.’ And you know what? F–k you.” — George Clooney, 2012

Clooney wasn’t at his most eloquent as he justified starring in Italian coffee commercials during a Newsweek pre-Oscar roundtable last year, but his blunt assessment captures the bottom-line truth that lures many Hollywood celebrities. Look at Leonardo DiCaprio, whose Japanese commercial for Jim Beam recently popped up on the internet and instantly raised eyebrows. Why is Leonardo DiCaprio, arguably the most famous Hollywood celebrity in the world, making commercials?

In the United States, when a famous actor appears in a commercial, there are fears that it can undermine, or at least cheapen, his celebrity. (For example, what was your reaction when Adrien Brody pitched Stella Artois during the 2011 Super Bowl? “Smooth!” or, “Oof, did he already pawn his Oscar?”) American celebs are more willing to provide their voices to a commercial than their faces, and when they do lend their fame to a product in faraway places like Japan or Italy, they often have contractual reassurances that evidence of the corporate relationship never makes it back to the States. (To which the Internet says, “Haaaaa-ha!”)

So why do they do it? Duh, money. Lots of it, as Clooney admitted. ”I couldn’t believe the money they were paying me,” the late Dennis Hopper once told EW, after popping up in an unusual TV commercial for Japanese bath products. ”If I could do one of these every year, I could retire.”

Dennis Hopper? Playing in the bath with a rubber ducky? Yes, that really happened — and David Lynch was not involved. But don’t look down your nose at him or the other celebs who’ve turned two days of work in Tokyo into a bucolic vacation home in the south of France. Celebs have sold their fame in foreign commercials — typically in Asian markets — for decades. Orson Welles and Sean Connery were peddling Japanese whiskey long before Bill Murray’s fading movie star in Lost in Translation went East for a quick payday. It makes you wonder what a beloved Hollywood icon like Paul Newman would have said about all this trading on fame. Fortunately, back in 1980, he addressed the issue directly. Click below for Newman’s refreshing take, and then peruse some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities starring in foreign commercials. (Quick! Before their legal minions force their removal from the web!) READ FULL STORY »

Drink tequila with George Clooney -- and 22 other celebrities in the business of booze

George-Clooney.jpg

Have you ever wanted to share a bottle of tequila with George Clooney until he got so drunk that he mistakenly thought you were Stacy Keibler? OK, so we can’t really help you out with the second half of that scenario, but the first half is suddenly much more plausible thanks to Clooney’s latest business venture.

The sexier-with-age movie star is teaming up Rande Gerber to create Casamigos, a new brand of tequila. According to Vanity Fair, Gerber and Clooney will sign every bottle that is made, number it and even taste it themselves (aka you’re sharing a drink with George Clooney … get it?). But as delicious and tempting as it all sounds, we always imagined that Clooney was more of a scotch neat kind of guy.

But Clooney isn’t the first celebrity to surprise us with his taste in alcohol, and we’re sure he won’t be the last. Here’s a rundown of some celebrities who have given the business of booze a try. Who matches up best with his or her drink of choice?

George Clooney and Cindy Crawford get drunk and sleep together... in a commercial -- VIDEO

Will downing George Clooney’s just-released Casamigos tequila make you sexier?

Si, according to this first ad for the drink, filmed at one of Clooney’s homes — which finds the actor and his business partner Rande Gerber swapping significant others (Clooney’s girlfriend, Stacy Keibler and Gerber’s wife, Cindy Crawford) after some responsible, Casamigos-fueled partying. And opposite-sex couples aren’t the only ones that end up in bed together. This is definitely a step up from Cindy’s Raymour & Flanigan ads.

'Batman' morph combines every actor into perfect playboy billionaire

bruce-wayneJust when you thought Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale couldn’t get any more handsome.

Redditor morphinapg has produced an image that combines the features of all five actors who have portrayed Bruce Wayne on the big screen, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The result is, well, a pretty good-looking dude. And probably a billionaire.

But does he possess the childhood trauma and vindictive rage that drives the caped crusader? Alas, such characteristics are only visible within.

George Clooney is distantly related to Abraham Lincoln -- Seven other celebs with famous ancestors

George-Clooney.jpg

On Thursday, Ancestry.com revealed that George Clooney is related to our very own 16th president, one Abraham Lincoln (not the vampire hunter). Indeed, the silver fox (by which I refer to Lincoln, of course) is the half-first cousin five times removed of ER‘s most handsome doctor.

What does this mean in the grand scheme of things? Absolutely nothing, except you know Daniel Day-Lewis is jealous. (The Lincoln star embodies the 16th president in every way save for one — BLOOD.) But in honor of this revelation, we’ve assembled a list of seven other celebrities with famous ancestors so you can keep up with your VIP bloodlines. Check it out* below: READ FULL STORY »

George Clooney sings 'Sweet Caroline' with Neil Diamond -- VIDEO

From Ocean’s Eleven to his throwback leading-man aura, George Clooney has sometimes projected a Sinatra vibe — but he’s no Blue Eyes when it comes to singing. Nevertheless, the actor semi-reluctantly joined Neil Diamond in a rendition of “Sweet Caroline” Saturday night at the 26th annual Carousel of Hope Ball in Los Angeles where the Oscar winner was honored for his humanitarian efforts. He was presented with the Brass Ring award by Shirley MacLaine, who described him as the “most generous, sweetest, charming human being,” and the event raised $2.5 million for the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.

Clooney only belted out a few words (“so good, so good, so good”), proving there are limits to his talents but none to his suavity.

Obama opens up about Clooney friendship: 'George is a wonderful guy'

obama-clooney

Don’t get Barack Obama wrong: While he regularly rubs elbows with the likes of Catwoman and Sarah Jessica Parker at fundraisers, he’s not constantly palling around with Hollywood’s elite. No, sir. Not one bit. Well, except for George Clooney, who is legitimately one of the president’s close buddies. “George is a wonderful guy,” Obama tells Entertainment Tonight during a segment that will air this evening.

“And he’s cute, too!” his wife Michelle chimes in.

That’s right: Obama and Clooney are tight, and apparently have been since the commander-in-chief’s pre-White House days. As Obama explains, “The truth is we got to know each other because of a substantive issue. He is a terrific advocate on behalf of the people of Darfur and to the people of Sudan who’ve been brutalized for a long time. And so when I was a senator — this was well before I was president — that was an issue that I was working together on a bipartisan basis, and George, who had traveled there, done documentaries there, and was very well-informed, came to testify in Congress. And so we got to know each other, and he is a good man and a good friend.”
