As the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers prepare to hustle for this year’s Super Bowl, the Big Shill — our bracket game that rewards advertising’s greatest icon — is all about Flo, the perky Progressive Insurance Girl played by actress Stephanie Courtney. That’s right: Though the Pillsbury Doughboy, Super Bowl ad favorites the Budweiser Clydesdales, and more did their darndest to stomp on her bumpit, they ultimately were no match for the overenthusiastic saleswoman. So it’s official: Picking up over 73 percent of the vote (the Pillsbury Doughboy finished with almost 27 percent), Flo rides to Big Shill victory on her white motorcycle. Never fear, though, fans of great advertising. Though we must wrap up our 2011 bracket game (giving The Noid, Grimace, Mr. Whipple, the Where’s the Beef Lady, and the rest of the game’s fallen competitors some imaginary consolation prizes), be sure to tune into the Super Bowl tonight — you might just see the next Big Shill champ. Check out Flo’s competitor stats below and the full bracket here, and, if you see him, be sure to tickle the Pillsbury Doughboy. It will make the poor guy feel better. Thanks for playing!

Big Shill Final: The Progressive Insurance Lady vs. Pillsbury Doughboy. Let's get it on!
If there was any doubt about the bonafides of our two Big Shill finalists, it was erased by their convincing Final Four victories over two advertising powerhouses from the old school. Flo the Progressive Insurance Lady treated the Budweiser Clydesdales worse than the poor pony at the end of True Grit, clinching Flo’s spot in the final by more than 41 percentage points. And the Pillsbury Doughboy just kept giggling creepily while Mrs. Butterworth — sweet ol’ Mrs. Butterworth — attempted to repeatedly tap-out during his 50 point rout. READ FULL STORY »
Big Shill Final Four: Can the Progressive Insurance Lady tame the Budweiser Clydesdales? Does the Pillsbury Doughboy have the stomach for smacking around sweet ol' Mrs. Butterworth?
Image Credit: Budweiser Clydesdales: Scott Cunningham/Getty ImagAfter four rounds of Big Shill madness, the wheat has risen. The cream has been separated from the chaff. Three old-school advertising icons have reached the Final Four, joined by one young upstart who’s rallied an army and stuck a stake through the hearts of the competition. Flo the Progressive Insurance Lady isn’t just an enthusiastic ambassador for her product, she’s a warrior. Just ask the debonair Old Spice Guy, who was rudely sent home on the horse he rode in on. Flo is ruthless, but now she faces her biggest challenge yet: the Budweiser Clydesdales, who’ve trampled everyone in their path so far. Can a relatively new insurance gal tame the most iconic American symbol for the most American of beverages — beer? And what about the other semifinal matchup, which many pundits are affectionately calling the Griddle Bowl. We’ll see if the Pillsbury Doughboy is still chuckling after the sweet but savvy Mrs. Butterworth buries a dozen haymakers in his gut. Because this is it. Two of these champions are going home, and the other two will survive to face each other in the most-buzzed-about advertising mascot rumble since Jacko and Max Headroom threw down in Arsenio’s green room back in 1989. Immortality awaits.

The Old Spice Guy faces a Progressive woman; The Bud clydesdales bear down on Tony the Tiger. Day 2 of the Big Shill quarterfinals
Image Credit: Budweiser Clydesdales: Scott Cunningham/Getty Images
Today’s Big Shill bracket game quarterfinal matchups feature four powerhouse advertising icons. On one side of the draw is Tony the Tiger, who squashed the GEICO Gecko to get to this point. But now he’s facing a stampede of Budweiser Clydesdales that just trampled the Energizer Bunny by a convincing 15 percentage points. (The pink, floppy-haired hipster is no longer going and going.) On the other side of the bracket is Flo, the Progressive Insurance Lady, who’s been boosted by a surprising amount of online support against a trio of impressive opponents: First, she outmuscled the Brawny Lumberjack by 33 percentage points, then she snapped Justin Long’s iNeck by 48 before spanking the Gerber Baby by 49! The only thing standing in her way of a Final Four berth is that suave Old Spice Guy. Will Flo be able to get past his striking brown eyes?

Mrs. Butterworth versus the 'Where's the Beef' Lady; the Rice Krispies gang tackles the Pillsbury Dough Boy. No holds barred in the Big Shill quarterfinals

Our Big Shill bracket game has moved into its quarterfinals, PopWatchers, and today’s two matchups have the potential to be historic duels. First, you have Snap, Crackle, and Pop triple-teaming the Pillsbury Dough Boy, evoking memories of the Ghostbusters taking on the giant Stay Puft marshmallow man. And then, in a contrast of styles, prim Mrs. Butterworth rolls up her sleeves to slug it out with the Wendy’s “Where’s the Beef” lady. This is why they train. This is why Mrs. B. gets up at five in the morning and eats that extra pancake. This is why the WtB Lady spends thousands of hours in front of the mirror, practicing the same hilarious line. Two dames enter; one dame leave.
