I often teased my sister for liking Coldplay by calling them Blandplay. I don't despise them. I simply cannot get into their middle-of-the-road music. Listening to them on the car radio is fine. But I wouldn't buy it.

It would be interesting to know if any wannabe teenage rock guitarist played the 'I Wanna Fly' melody to their friends who were also Coldplay fans. How many would applaud them for mistakenly believing they were hearing a rocked-up version of 'Viva la Vida'?

I get the 'can't copyright chord progression' rule, but the melody is too similar to dismiss. Whether you like him or not, if he retracts his claim then it's open season for (c)rappers everywhere to butcher every song ever recorded.

And to all Coldplay fans: As a bass player who enjoys playing guitar ocassionally and is a big fan of Joe Satriani. Not all fans are as over-zealous and childish as some of the 'Joe is best' and 'Coldplay are rubbish' comments on this page make us out to be.

I was just curious about this to-do about who stole what song, so I came here. I listened to the Satriani music and I love Viva la Vida by Coldplay, which won't play here, so there's no side-by-side at this site that I could get to play. Though I heard some chords that were similar, the songs sound completely different to me. Actually, perhaps Satriani should hope that Billy Joel doesn't sue him over the heavy background guitar toward the end because it sure reminds me of the background guitar in A Matter of Trust, a song I love, so I just thought I'd throw that in. As far as Coldplay and Satriani go, those are two completely different song styles. Apples and oranges as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not here to hate. I'm not for or against Coldplay or Satch. However, I must admit these songs sound very similar. Whether Coldplay intentially copied it or if Joe is just doing this for attention is up for debate. But I must say that Satriani is definately not a nobody. you would know that if you listened to more than what you heard on the radio. Also, winning a grammy doesn't mean squat. Milli Vanilli won a Grammy didn't they?

FYI, campers, Satch taught Vai how to play. He was also giving guitar lessons to others before he started his career. Washed up? Don't think so- his only peers are Vai, Eddie Van Halen (his early days), Yngwie Malmsteen, and the late Randy Rhodes. Coldplay may have won some Grammys, but their style of music is the junk-food of the industry- pop schlock that is here today, gone tomorrow. Bailey is obviously so far off base it isn't funny. HAng around a few years, Junior, and then you'll have a decent opinion.

some parts are similar, but I highly doubt it was a complete rip off. A musical influence at best but definatley not Satriani's song. The cold play song is way better orchestrated and is much less cheesey too.

Bailey has no idea what he/she is talking about. Joe has had 15 Grammy nom. and who cares if he hasn't won. I'd rather the respect of my peers then the votes of under aged teenie boppers that haven't the slightest clue on what real music is anyway. I'm a big fan of Joe Satriani and don't mind Coldplay as well. Let's just see if Coldplay is still putting out CD's in 20 years or getting back together cause they haven't got any money left tour. Satriani is just some washed-up musician who'll do anything to get in the news. This album has been out since June 2008, and several other people have already pointed the finger at Coldplay and insisted that they ripped off their own music. All these claims were proved entirely false. Satriani is just like you and me and the rest of the world...he's envious that he couldn't come up with a this brilliant genius masterpiece of a song. I've compared the two, and really is ridiculous. Besides, "Viva La Vida" fits right in with the rest of the album, so Coldplay would be ripping off Satriani for the entire album, no? Really, this will not end well for Satriani. Besides, I find it hilarious that despite this claim Coldplay STILL won Song of the Year at the Grammys. Man, I love them.

ok i didn't take the time to read every comment, to annoyed by a few that i have read. Satch is no "nobody" anyone with any knowlegde of music knows who he is and knows he is responsible for vai and hammett. Also its not just the chord progression. The chorus vocal is the same as joe's lead line in the what would be "chorus" of If i could fly. like it has been said, intentional maybe not. should they ve held accountable. Definately. and yeah you hear so much that something is bound to regurgitate eventually as an artist, not much left out there to do and be original. Coldplay do not deserve a Grammy for a tune that someone else wrote. If melody isnt important in terms of copywrite, then we may as well just change the words of sons and call them our own. Come on guys anyone can hear this is the same tune. Whether Coldplay did it purposefully or not is another matter all together. Sattriani daserves the royalties from this song. As for the Grammy, who gives a @~## its a bull**@@ award anyways.

...also, you cannot copyright a chord progression. Musicians would be s.o.l. if you could. Here's another example: "R.O.C.K. in the USA" "What I like about you" and "On the Dark Side" to name a very few songs with similar chord structures.

If Coldplay stole from Satriani, then they both stole from Chris Rea ("Fool if you think it's over" 1978.) Musicians have heard a lot of music in their lifetimes, not to mention the incidental stuff on tv, etc. The stuff gets in and comes back out. I think only insecure, desperate musicians go off when they think someone copied them. (Neil Sedaka didn't try to sue Nora Jones because her song "Don't know why" used changes from his song "Laughter in the Rain." Just an example - it happens all the time.)

Satriani definately has a case. Your talk about the combination of notes...OK, but the feel and phrasing is exactly the same. It is me understanding the singer wasn't even in the studio while the backing tracks were being laid down. So elementry thing tells me that the guitarist is probably the one who ripped of Joe. At any rate, dues definately need to be paid, and why not add another Grammy for the song to Joe Satrinai.

Geez..sounds to me like Cold Play will be getting their grammy repo'd. I've tried listening to this group on many occasions and I just can't get into their music. But I did catch a show on PBS when they were performing at Austin City Limits. That was a good show. Joe is possibly the BEST guitarist I've ever heard. I think Cold Play ripped him off and I think they knew exactly what they were doing when they did it. I've been reading up on them and it seems that this isn't the 1st or 2nd time this has happened. I doubt this will ruin them WHEN Joe wins his case, but I bet it forces Cold Play to actualyy start writing their very own sh*t. Thieving B@st@rds!

This is a sore subject, might as well sue every song writer that ever wrote a tune. The progression is very similar but it is the melody that sets them apart. Here is an idea... someone should patent the 1 4 5 and they can sue everyone. Give me a break! I could see if it were samplings of Joes stuff straight from his CD, then yes, sue. Just like the old rap days when they were sampling Van Halen.
Cant we all just enjoy the music, that is what its all about. I am tired of Law suits.
