'Battlestar Galactica' prequel series, 'Caprica,' coming in 2010

Categories: 'Battlestar Galactica', I'm Just a Geek, Television, Things That Are Awesome!

Moralesstoltz_l After a dud like this fall's TV season, I'm in serious need of shows to look forward to. Sure, the January returns of Lost, 24, and Battlestar Galactica have got me pretty amped, but can anyone name any bright spots beyond that? Imagine my delight to find out that the SciFi Channel has greenlit a prequel to BSG called Caprica. It's not scheduled to air until 2010  (with a pilot directed by Friday Night Lights' Jeffrey Reiner) but, folks, that's still something.

The show is set 50 years before BSG and follows the lives of two rival families--the Graystones and the Adamas. That's right. We'll be following along with Admiral Bill Adama's father, Joseph, a civil liberties lawyer played by Esai Morales. At the start of the series, New Adama's got a real problem with the experiments being run by the head of the Graystone family, played by Eric Stoltz. That would be the same family whose computer company is developing some living robots called Cylons. Ever heard of 'em?

While the show will be futuristic, it's set in "a society recognizably close to our own" that's dealing with artificial intelligence and robotics. The network claims that it will "deliver all of the passion, intrigue, political backbiting and family conflict in television’s first science fiction family saga." So, it'll be even more of a sci-fi soap opera than BSG, and I'm okay with that. How about you?

BTW: Take a look at the trailer.

Is there a connection between the Daniel in Caprica and the Daniel (number 7) that was just mentioedn in the NO Exit episode of Galactica?

Zoe Fri, Jan 23, 2009 at 07:02 PM EST

I'm pretty psyched they're going to film Caprica. My one wish is that they make it more gritty, brutal and down-to-earth than the lightweight Battlestar.

rhatcher Sun, Dec 7, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

I was feeling the same anxieties about the concept for "Caprica." But having read interviews with all the main players and a few script reviews for the "Caprica" pilot movie it sounds very gritty and very sci-fi!

I'm looking forward to 2010 with a lot more enthusiasm. And "Caprica" is brand new, its a prequel in name only. BSG is the remake and it rocks.

Look it up.

To be honest im really looking forward to Caprica as I am a huge BSG fan. However, im more interested in Virtuality (also by BSG-creator Ron D Moore) as it has stronger sci-fi elements.

T-Rex, I read in an article where Stoltz said that it wasnl't up to him at all, and he'd like to see it too. It's Spielberg and Universal Studios who won't let us see it, which makes sense- hard to believe an actor, when he signs a contract, has control over who owns the final product- especially an unknown actor.

T-Rex Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

I'm boycotting all things Eric Stoltz until he allows the scenes he shot as Marty McFly in Back to the Future to be released.

KellyB Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

Danger, Will Robinson !

Caprica looks like a stinkeroo from what the trailer showed!
I can't see how the backstory without space, battlestars, etc. is gonna draw in viewers. What's sci-fi without spaceships in it ?

Adam Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

Trailer had nothing sci-fi to it at all !

Looked like a lawyer show...missing kid, strained married cpl's marriage, where the sci-fi?

Won't be spending time with this one.

I love BSG and will probably watch this. However, if it's as boring as "Razor," which was just a rehashing of stuff we already knew about, then it will be lame. I mean, we already know what's going to happen, so the show better at least be full of REALLY hot dudes. Like REALLY hot.

Sue Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 12:36 AM EST

Looks great- can't wait. Start it sooner!

ks Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 08:26 PM EST

I really like BSG, but after watching the trailer for Caprica-not so thrilled, I hate the actors too. I agree with others-BSG into 90120 sorry scifi

Erin Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

I love BSG, but I won't be watching Caprica. To be honest, it sounds kind of lame.

ann Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

BSG bored me by the beginning of the second season and I gave up on it. This actually looks like it might be worth checking out.

Teresa Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

45 days to last BSG episodes!!

J. Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

Seems kind of pointless to make this series since we'll find out soon just how everything comes together. Why not invest in a new series or idea?

Glenn Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

Prequel?

Is Sci-fi Channel also gonna make a prequel to Superman where Jor-el spends his time talking about the end of Krypton for 10 season episodes?

Take the hint, Caprica has the makings of a disaster much like the re-booted Bionic Woman and will be a ratings bow-wow and a laughing stock of sci-fi shows.

IMHO, it will probably bomb worse than Knight Rider !

K Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

Can't wait.

Chris Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

I guess that I'm the only one who saw the preview of the Caprica movie online. It is a 3 min or so clip. Dont know if that movie will serve as a pilot or a miniseries but I dont know why it would have to wait so long. Seemed like it was a done deal.

opinion Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Sci-fi soap opera, huh?
Gonna show some skin every episode? If not, it's D.O.A. ( dead on arrival !)

Caprica sounds like a bore with passion, intrigue, political backbiting and family conflicts.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzz wake me up when Shannon Doherty shows up in it...

RazorFan Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

I'll pass on Caprica.

Sounds like a bore - 2 families in conflict. Sheesh ! Where's the sci-fi to that?

Former Viewer Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

R.I.P. BSG

Caprica will be very easily forgotten and noting more than a sad footnote much the same as Galactica 1980 was to the original show.

Let's face it, the space combat / survival aspect was what drew us, not the heavy, teary eyes or the Mad Men corporate political backstabbing that Caprica sounds like it will be.

Tsk, tsk, tsk

joesmom Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

I heard this was more like "Dallas" than "BSG" so I'm not interested. I'm still mourning the loss of Stargate SG1. When will we see more of "Torchwood" and "Doctor Who"?

Scifier Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Great, take a sci-fi show and make it 90210, sex, drama, crying whiners.

FRACK !

bhm1304 Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

The cast is so good, I was praying for series pick up. The movie is in the can PLEASE SCI FI, GIVE US THE PILOT SOONER. Those mfkers on network have been busy cancelling good shows, show them how cable does it better.

ks Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

OOpps 43 days :)

ks Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

54 days and counting for return of BSG

zubr Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

Benjh,
Apparently Moore and Eick will both be involved and they are looking to bring back the rest of the Battlestar writing staff as well. So I'm not worried about the quality of the writing.

zubr Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

About time! It seemed like forever that we've been waiting for them to give the go-ahead.

Rich Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

Another. Stinking. Prequel.

Get some new ideas, people.

Benjh Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

It's all gonna come down to the writing. If it's as smart as the current series, everything's possible. The pitch certainly sounds interesting...

Normalman Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

I love BSG but I think too much looking into the details of the past could show too many flaws in the foundation. I mean we're already pushing believability hard in having a race of intelligent machines advancing taking over in just 50 years already.

Joel Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

I really hope they don't screw Caprica up.

Loop Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

You know, I LOVE BSG but for some reason, this sounds like Dallas in space. I just don't find myself enthused at all with this. Hopefully it's good though.
