'American Idol': Season 8 rumors begin!

Dec 4, 2008, 12:48 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol'

Jasoncastromaryarchuleta_l For the last seven seasons, I've kept myself in a tightly sealed cocoon when it comes to American Idol spoilers. But every year it gets harder. I mean, it's not as if an Idoloonie like myself can avoid must-visit Idol news sites like MJ's Big Blog, so if I want to read about, say, what's happening with the underrated Blake Lewis, then I have to [SPOILER ALERT!] accept that it comes with a side order of news about Idol wannabes who've advanced to Hollywood week, about the fact that Idol might have 36 semifinalists this year (instead of 24), and that new judge Kara DioGuardi falls closer to Simon than Paula in the critique department.

Interestingly, this season is rumored to have its share of contestants with connections to past Idols and other famous folks, as well as the typical smattering of almost-famous types who no one has actually heard of, but who'll generate oodles of outraged "that contestant's a ringer!" chatter once the show starts airing (Jan. 13, in case you missed the announcement). Among the alleged hopefuls generating internet chatter: Michael Castro (younger brother of season 7's awesome Jason Castro); David Osmond (nephew of Donny & Marie); Anna Kaelin (daughter of the vocal coach of season 7 runner-up and current chart sensation David Archuleta); Danielle Roundtree (AKA Miss New York, USA 2008); and former Geffen recording artist Joanna Pacitti.

I've posted a couple of polls regarding these reported contestants (after the jump) but before you go there, how's this for an idea? To avoid heinous spoilerization of the 24 (or 36) semifinalists, how about Idol turns the semifinalist announcement episode (where contestants take the elevator of death up to the scary table where the judges sit) into a LIVE broadcast? Think of the heightened levels of suspense, the clenched jaws, the whitened knuckles, and the frayed nerves? And that's just for the viewing audience at home, to say nothing of the contestants! Who wants to start the petition?

Is it me, or are all 4 judges really boring so far? Simon's quips are less than witty, Paula has become a woman of few words, Randy, well, Randy is Randy, and Kara seems to like to get the last word in...a bit obnoxious.

suebrody Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 12:26 PM EST

I'm torn. Someone like Carly Smithson DID have a contract, and yet was dropped quickly and then went on to do well on the show. Others, like David Cook (still swooning), just fronted a little-known band and got his chance to shine. And David Archuleta had success in his early teens but was unheard of until his return to TV, while Jason Castro had basically done nothing until he made it to final four (same with Syesha, final three). I guess it's equal opportunity; if you get chosen, you get chosen, and once you're in the mix, it's up to you to do well and get to continue on. The judges won't pick weak candidates (one hopes) no matter what the background, and look how far the Kelly Clarkson/Carrie Underwoods have come, and yet so have the Archies. I think ultimately it comes down to talent (and popularity). And remember, it's a reality show!

not true. Alot of labels merged last year, dropping many artists. the record industry is in bad shape. A lot of these artists are signed and left to sit and wait, there album is released with little promotion, and then they are gone. So Yes some of them due deserve another chance. I am sure its humiliating to come to a show like this, and try again. There is the same amount of chance for a signed artist and a non signed one. They can either sing or not sing. Its a god given talent,no matter how you look at it. Just because you had a deal doent make you any better then someone ekse god gave a beautiful voice to. SOOOo lets just enjoy all of them. Whoever winds deserves to.

I'm going to stop watching this show if they don't stop putting people on the show who've already gotten a break in show biz, or who already have connections and don't need Idol for those.

Hunnzy Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 02:53 AM EST

For those who continue to bash Archuleta__you may want to check out xrank.com. He continues to be at the top of the list of Musicians and Celebrities! Today he is #2 right after Micheal Jackson and right before Brittany Spears#3. More and more people are finding out what an incrediable musician, singer and all around remarkable humble young man he truly is!!!!!!!!!!

Ariane Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 12:08 AM EST

Anonymous and other David Archuleta haters, didn't you get the memo?? Season 7 is over, everyone moved on but you! I really feel bad for you haters, open your brain and ears and start appreciating the new talent or turn your tv off and go to the mall.

jasmine Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 06:10 PM EST

anonymous, actual DA's album is not tanking. It is doing very OK for a pop album. Sales are pretty steady. DC;s album is selling better right now, but don't say DA's album is tanking. IT IS NOT! Some people still don't get him yet. Maybe b'coz of his age? his 'younger than 17' looks ?? But once they do yoy americans will realise what a GEM you have here. Guys give his album a real listen, buy it, you won't regret...why is it that we outside of the USA appreciate him more..he is an international star.

Kath Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 08:12 PM EST

Holy crap, Joanna Pacitti! I love the song she did for the Legally Blonde soundtrack.

Victoria Sun, Dec 14, 2008 at 10:10 PM EST

You missed one contestant with significant connections - Lara Johnston is the daughter of Tom Johnston, original lead singer of the Doobie Brothers. She has played with them and other big names at concerts, and she was on MTV's Rock the Cradle. According to MJ's and VFTW she made it to Hollywood. No word on her Top 36 status, though.

chee-chee Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

well peoples i guest everyone that you all have spokeing on is fine but they are all out there trying hard to make a living, like everyone else. now tell me what can you do? can you sing(no) then why be a player hater?

hellie Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

I have to agree that Archie's album is tanking. David Cook's album is predicted to land in the top ten again this week on billboard and about to go gold. If you don't believe me, go to Hits Daily Double and see what their prediction is for this week. No mention of Archie at all. He's sliding down the charts. Go look at Amazon and Itunes to see where Archie stands compared to Cook. You will be amazed. Get your facts straight before you post ridiculous comments. Yes, I'm talking to you 6:03. I'm so sorry that you're feeling jealous. Hopefully you'll get over it soon!

Michael's list is incredibly old. Half those people have been cut. For up to date information, check out Votefortheworst.com. That's where I go.

GAMissy Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 10:14 PM EST

Michael, thanks for the tip to what's happening with Blake Lewis. He may be underappreciated, but he's very talented and working hard and has some new projects in the works. They are bound to be interesting and innovative, and music fans who appreciate what he has to offer are looking forward to what's ahead.

eve Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

wow yall some of ya are tuning out before it is even on! I wonder who will actually end up watching just cause? I started watching idol the week Brandon Rogers was voted off. I became hooked on it. I dont care about the previous contracts, I agree they shouldnt be under contract at the time of idol. I think last year the guy who sang I am your brother, who was way too old to try out should not have gotten thru (making the show look stupid IMO). The weirdos who wear costumes (and are asked to shave their chest) should not be allowed to get thru to the 4 judges (of which I hope the new lady does not ruin the show). I feel they should tour the top 12 not just 10. I personally cant wait til Jan when the new season starts. I love watching every bit of the show. As a family the 4 of us sit together both nights each week and watch. I make a poster and we mark off those who go. I had a scrapbook last year (yeah I know silly me). I did a radio show live each week as a call in and loved it. yah

Anonymous Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

Too bad Archie's album is tanking. Guess there's not much of a market for bubble gum music. Too bad Archie. Maybe when you grow up you can do something else.

Sally in Chicago Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

Michael, there are a lot of underrated talent on AI. Some of them never make it to the top 14 or 12. Don't single out Blake, who I thought was just average as a singer. He may be a better producer/writer.

maria Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

hmmmm It has been too long since a good idol has been chosen David Cook is the best eva. Now lets get some good music on the radio. Who cares about record deals etc!!1 just find someone to show their talent to the world. And please get rid of some of the goofie! this show is about finding someone to sing and entertain

katbarb Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

"Underrated Blake Lewis". Michael you hit the nail in the head. I am so glad that you are among so many music fans who see Blake's talent. I hope that this new record deal that is in the works will give the support that this artist deserves. I am looking forward to new projects from Blake. Very talented musician, producer, and vocalist.

gailer Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

Hi Michael!
Looking forward to reading your blogs once Season 8 starts!
Happy Holidays from a Dreadhead!

Dee Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

Give Archie a chance. He's got a beautiful voice and is very talented. He's a nice person too. He needs to pick better songs.

Dee Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

I thought I was done with AI but now that Michael Castro has tried out I will be watching. Jason Castro is doing great. The songs he writes are so good. AI didn't do him justice. Just go on his website: www.jasoncastromusic.com and take a listen.

dja525 Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 03:35 AM EST

And Sandy B.:

You are soooo far of base.....you just got tagged OUT!!! Cook cannot even hold a note most of the time. He'a boring.

dja525 Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 03:32 AM EST

I'm with you sister! They are sooooo clueless and look soooo silly with their DA bashing. They look so foolish. Thanx for your post!

dja525 Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 03:29 AM EST

Well....I am hoping for a great season!! I am watching once again in hopes that America gets it right this time becaise they sure didn't get it right on AI7! Raspy-voiced Cook is extremely arrogant and irritating.

Infuriated & Annoyed... Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 03:19 AM EST

*Anonymous Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST--Every picture I see of Archie, he has the same goofy grin. Honestly, the kid has no personality. His 15 minutes of fame are almost up!*

I don't know if you even know what you are talking about...wow..for a kid without any personality he sure has a lot of fans...he already has a platinum record...he is being invited left and right to various organizations, TV/radio shows, going to various states to perform...he was part of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade...NEED I SAY MORE???...Get your facts straight before you even make an attempt to comment against David Archuleta or to any person for that matter....

cianne Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 12:43 AM EST

I'm most excited about Archie's vocal coach's daughter...!!!

I wonder what does she look like..

SandyB Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 12:38 AM EST

The only plant that I have a problem with is the Osmond nephew. Because he has an unfair advantage by having a large built in fan base.
I had no problem with Carly Smithson and Michael Johns, and I actually like them, but a nephew from a famous family with a huge built in fan base spells nothing but trouble.
All and all we do have to credit to the American Idol voters for picking David Cook. He was the underdog, and now we have the best male winner of idol, in Idol history.

Nina Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

It's funny the first 3 people you mentioned are the ones I heard got cut already. I just hope this season is better than last season , I'm sorry but last season was stale as hell. David Cook was alright and a few others, but they voted off all the interesting people early leaving all these zombies left, no offense. I just want some interesting people this year.

Jenn Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

The rumor is that at least three of those five don't make it past Hollywood. Two of them being the ones connected to Jason and Archie.

Jen Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

I'll watch, because it's a fun show to watch, but David Cook is it for me. Took them 7 seasons, but they totally found my Idol.

I don't mind any of the Idolettes having prior experience. I just wish TPTB would be open about it and give the audience a bit more info about each contestant. The world would be a better place if more people knew about Axium and "Analog Heart".

Mrs. P Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

So, per most comments, AI needs to throw out anyone with any kind of performing skills, decent voices, any famous relatives, prior experience (sorry all you bar band members, you are out), people who have any songs on You Tube, those that have competed in any type of singing competition, and anyone who has performed on stage where the audience pays to hear them.

AI may as well put all the rejects in the final 24...that will be all that is left. Everyone needs to get a grip...If you have any talent you've expressed it long before you come to AI. This is not a search for unproven talent, far from it!

Kristen Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 08:40 PM EST

They DID do a live reveal once- I cannot remember which season, but I think it might have been season 5. I thought that was such a cool idea but they never did it again, sadly.

MeToo Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

I agree with comment 3:56. Archie is really goofy looking. He's so immature for his age. No wonder his CD is full of bubble gum pop. He's going to suffer the same fate as Kat McPhee. She was forced to put out a pop CD when she's not a pop singer. The same thing is happening to Archuleta. I'm not sure what will happen with him in the future though. The world doesn't need another Perry Como. Not sure where he would fit in.

Jessica S. Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 07:26 PM EST

Are we still supposed to care about this show? AI will never have another contestant as wonderfully talented and endearing as David Cook so I've said sayonara to the show.

Good luck to all the contestants -whomever they may be.

Jeffrey Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

Is that heinous picture of Kara DioGuardi or is that Donny and Marie's nephew??? But seriously, I know AI is mostly a farce (consider how many losers and no-talents get to see the 4 judges and how many talented singers don't), but what's with people connected to famous people getting to go on? Donny and Marie's nephew? Why does he need help from a reality show?

cewlmom Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

I wish I could vote on the live elevator of doom. I love that idea. They should totally do that.

Dan Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

What next? Barbara Streisand's grandaughter?
AI has become a bad joke.

Anonymous Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

I take back my comments. Archie is a doll! Just that he did not respond to my love letters.

Anonymous Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

Every picture I see of Archie, he has the same goofy grin. Honestly, the kid has no personality. His 15 minutes of fame are almost up!

Kate Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

For the love of... ok, as long as the contestant doesn't have a CURRENT contract somewhere, they can audition. So what if they had a past contract... who cares if Carly Smithson or David Cook recorded before? I still enjoyed hearing them. I mean, Kelly Clarkson had a contract prior to Idol. If I'm remembering correctly, it went bust pretty fast and she had just come home to Texas when she tried out for Idol. I don't really think Idol ever considered itself an amateur competition... and if it did, it sure doesn't now.

skeve Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

At least if the Hi-5 girl Jenn Korbee Peterson or whatever is on, the eye-candy factor will be Hi, I mean, High!

pane Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

I thought IA is only for amateurs? The AI 2008 winner(Cook) had a record prior to AI 2008. And now ......J Pacitti, what's wrong with AI?
I hope Jason brother has a better voice and doesn't have his hair braided.

I haven't regularly watched Idol since season 2 and there's a reason for it. Reading above about the contestants, and the fact their names have already been leaked as well as their "connections" and not to mention the auditions, has really turned me off of the competition. I'd heard they were making some changes to this season, but meh, who cares now.

Wow, usually these "ringers" are people I've never heard of before and think should be allowed to compete. But I actually HAVE heard of Joanna Pacitti, her song is even on my ipod. Very strange.
