Is it me, or are all 4 judges really boring so far? Simon's quips are less than witty, Paula has become a woman of few words, Randy, well, Randy is Randy, and Kara seems to like to get the last word in...a bit obnoxious.

I'm torn. Someone like Carly Smithson DID have a contract, and yet was dropped quickly and then went on to do well on the show. Others, like David Cook (still swooning), just fronted a little-known band and got his chance to shine. And David Archuleta had success in his early teens but was unheard of until his return to TV, while Jason Castro had basically done nothing until he made it to final four (same with Syesha, final three). I guess it's equal opportunity; if you get chosen, you get chosen, and once you're in the mix, it's up to you to do well and get to continue on. The judges won't pick weak candidates (one hopes) no matter what the background, and look how far the Kelly Clarkson/Carrie Underwoods have come, and yet so have the Archies. I think ultimately it comes down to talent (and popularity). And remember, it's a reality show!

not true. Alot of labels merged last year, dropping many artists. the record industry is in bad shape. A lot of these artists are signed and left to sit and wait, there album is released with little promotion,and then they are gone. So Yes some of them due deserve another chance. I am sure its humiliating to come to a show like this, and try again. There is the same amount of chance for a signed artist and a non signed one. They can either sing or not sing. Its a god given talent,no matter how you look at it. Just because you had a deal doent make you any better then someone ekse god gave a beautiful voice to. SOOOo lets just enjoy all of them. Whoever winds deserves to.

anonymous, actual DA's album is not tanking. It is doing very OK for a pop album. Sales are pretty steady. DC;s album is selling better right now, but don't say DA's album is tanking. IT IS NOT! Some people still don't get him yet. Maybe b'coz of his age? his 'younger than 17' looks ?? But once they do yoy americans will realise what a GEM you have here. You missed one contestant with significant connections - Lara Johnston is the daughter of Tom Johnston, original lead singer of the Doobie Brothers. She has played with them and other big names at concerts, and she was on MTV's Rock the Cradle. According to MJ's and VFTW she made it to Hollywood. No word on her Top 36 status, though.

If you don't believe me, go to Hits Daily Double and see what their prediction is for this week. No mention of Archie at all. He's sliding down the charts. wow yall some of ya are tuning out before it is even on! I wonder who will actually end up watching just cause? I started watching idol the week Brandon Rogers was voted off. I became hooked on it. I dont care about the previous contracts, I agree they shouldnt be under contract at the time of idol. I think last year the guy who sang I am your brother, who was way too old to try out should not have gotten thru (making the show look stupid IMO). The weirdos who wear costumes (and are asked to shave their chest) should not be allowed to get thru to the 4 judges (of which I hope the new lady does not ruin the show). I feel they should tour the top 12 not just 10. I personally cant wait til Jan when the new season starts. I love watching every bit of the show. As a family the 4 of us sit together both nights each week and watch. I make a poster and we mark off those who go. I had a scrapbook last year (yeah I know silly me). I did a radio show live each week as a call in and loved it. yah

Michael, there are a lot of underrated talent on AI. Some of them never make it to the top 14 or 12. Don't single out Blake, who I thought was just average as a singer. He may be a better producer/writer.

The only plant that I have a problem with is the Osmond nephew. Because he has an unfair advantage by having a large built in fan base.
I had no problem with Carly Smithson and Michael Johns, and I actually like them, but a nephew from a famous family with a huge built in fan base spells nothing but trouble.
All and all we do have to credit to the American Idol voters for picking David Cook. He was the underdog, and now we have the best male winner of idol, in Idol history.

It's funny the first 3 people you mentioned are the ones I heard got cut already. I just hope this season is better than last season , I'm sorry but last season was stale as hell. I'll watch, because it's a fun show to watch, but David Cook is it for me. Took them 7 seasons, but they totally found my Idol.

I don't mind any of the Idolettes having prior experience. I just wish TPTB would be open about it and give the audience a bit more info about each contestant. The world would be a better place if more people knew about Axium and "Analog Heart".

So, per most comments, AI needs to throw out anyone with any kind of performing skills, decent voices, any famous relatives, prior experience (sorry all you bar band members, you are out), people who have any songs on You Tube, those that have competed in any type of singing competition, and anyone who has performed on stage where the audience pays to hear them.

AI may as well put all the rejects in the final 24...that will be all that is left. Everyone needs to get a grip...If you have any talent you've expressed it long before you come to AI. This is not a search for unproven talent, far from it!

I agree with comment 3:56. Archie is really goofy looking. He's so immature for his age. No wonder his CD is full of bubble gum pop. He's going to suffer the same fate as Kat McPhee. She was forced to put out a pop CD when she's not a pop singer. The same thing is happening to Archuleta. I'm not sure what will happen with him in the future though. The world doesn't need another Perry Como. Not sure where he would fit in.

For the love of... ok, as long as the contestant doesn't have a CURRENT contract somewhere, they can audition. So what if they had a past contract... who cares if Carly Smithson or David Cook recorded before? I still enjoyed hearing them. I mean, Kelly Clarkson had a contract prior to Idol. If I'm remembering correctly, it went bust pretty fast and she had just come home to Texas when she tried out for Idol. I don't really think Idol ever considered itself an amateur competition... and if it did, it sure doesn't now.

Reading above about the contestants, and the fact their names have already been leaked as well as their "connections" and not to mention the auditions, has really turned me off of the competition. I'd heard they were making some changes to this season, but meh, who cares now.
