Madonna + Britney + Justin = Sadness

Nov 6, 2008, 12:24 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Music, Strange Bedfellows

Madonnabritneyjustin_l I am decidedly depressed by the news that Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears are both slated to appear during tonight's Los Angeles stop on Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet" tour.

I know, I know…back in March, I blogged about how, for the first time in Madge's career, I was unexcited about one of her album releases. After all, Madonna's always been at her best when she's latched on to a slightly underground trend, co-opted it as her own, and foisted it onto an unsuspecting mainstream audience (think: vogueing, electronica, Mirwais). Madonna's sudden reliance on Timberlake, Timbaland, and Kanye West to make 2008's Hard Candy a sales success was tantamount to her nervously carrying her lunch tray into the pop-culture cafeteria and trying to score a seat with the cool kids when, really, she should've been sitting down at an empty table and confidently forming her own damn posse. And sure enough, seven months after its release, Hard Candy is barely on my radar, except for those occasions when the admittedly excellent "Beat Goes On" pops up on my cardio playlist.

Which makes tonight's recruitment of Spears even more distressing. Madonna and Britney's previous collaborations -- the faux-lesbian smooch on MTV, the abhorrent "Me Against the Music" -- did little to boost either singer's fortunes. And (hello!) why would you think that fans shelling out hundreds of bucks for a ticket would be excited to have a notorious lip-syncher added to the bill?

What think you, PopWatchers? Am I crazy for expecting Madge to still be setting trends at this stage of her career? And if she really has reached the "follow the leader" stage of her career, could it be time for her to (blasphemy alert) follow Celine Dion and Cher's leads, and get herself a residency in Vegas? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!

Assuming Britney and Justin join Madonna onstage, let's see what they do before we judge it.

All three should be setting trends at every stage of their careers. Maybe they'll do something fresh and unexpected tonight. Maybe.

here's my take- she brought the euro stuff to US in the states for the least decade. since most of her audience is IN europe- maybe she thought she'd give THEM a taste of something else. i hate the US because we forget that we're a tiny part and the MAJORITY is out THERE. sorry she didn't please YOU with this one album. but think of the fact that she's the WORLD'S most profitable entertainer. let the REST of the world get a treat. and sorry- i don't know if i can trust you as an entertainment blogger if you DISS madonna landing BRITNEY SPEARS- IN PERSON- AND JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE- IN THE SAME CONCERT- IN LOS ANGELES!!!!!!!! HELLO?? headlines ALL week long! and then gossip lies start, etc. PLUS- how great for her AUDIENCE. 50,000 people got to see something really cool. it's called POP CULTURE. the fact you are questioning it scares me and i believe it should scare all these readers as well. as long as they're not lifeless folks who refresh every minute to find something new to attack. Madonna rules! What are you doing at 50?!

B- Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

It's official. Slezak officially hates Britney Spears. Wow. How do you love a fool like Jason Castro and hate Britney Spears?

nathan Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 05:38 AM EST

madonna seems to have run out of ideas. shes about as interesting or sexy these days as watching paint dry and her reliance on justin and britney-i-love-to-lip-synch-spears proves it.

Marshall Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

I don't think Madonna has to pander to anyone- whether it be her fans or current pop stars.
I saw the show last night. I have never seen her in concert before. I'm sure it wasn't "the best show EVER"; but I will tell you this. It was creative and fresh. She actually looked like SHE was having a good time. Maybe its time she just has a show for her, doing what she wants. And if she wants JT and Britney and Kanye tagging along on video screens behind her (which I thought was very well done)- then more power to her. She threw her religion at us, she threw her politics at us, she threw herself at us- pure and whole. And while I'm sure the 15k+ people in attendance don't agree with everything, there was an undescribable energy in that arena. And I didn't hear a soul asking for their money back.

alex Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

I know something about this bussiness
and its tough,to make it the way madonna has shows that the woman will never give up and good for ,she know whats hot and instead of changing her look again or style of clothes she got the two hottest stars and put them on everyone, she know whats hot,and you can't take that away from her...you go madonna, just do a great new album

sylvia Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 08:12 AM EST

Madonna is cool, but the fact that she is relying on J.T and Kanye west for her album to sell is trash, she i a ledgend even thiugh i an not really her fan.

Joshua Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 01:09 AM EST

Just checked the prices for tickets on Stub Hub. Her tickets are selling, and selling for up to $6000.00. I don't like her, or her politics, but she can sell tickets. Madonna is and will always be a legend in music.

Zagrob Mon, Nov 10, 2008 at 04:48 AM EST

Madonna is unique, just like everyone else.

theresa Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

Who cares....I don't..lol :)

JT Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 12:03 PM EST

1st in case your not aware we in a recession. Most artist arent even touring because they dont want to loose money to perform and people are paying big bucks to see the concert at almost sold out or sold out shows. Which just goes to show madonna ROCKS. 2nd She never really claimed to be first or the best at anything, she just does her thing and lets the fans decide what they like or not. 3rd what is your problem you really need to cool it otherwise your gonna have a heart attack, then we wont be able to respond to your bitchy articles.......

Sam SR Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

For Allen: You sound like a bitter, old lady. Madonna may not be too "young" in the numbers but she sure has enough to make her fans happy enough to shell out hundreds of dollars to see her. What she does with her shows is her business. I'm not even a "fan" and I dont' like your
remarks. I do however admire one that has the longevity of stars like Madonna, Tina Turner comes to mind!!!

cleve Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 05:11 AM EST

my gods, that anyone here would be defending this tripe means we have become a nation of disposable idiots. There is little musician in any of them, save Timberlake. He plays an instrument at least. Spears is a hack, cant sing, cant dance, and if you say she can ,you, too, are a blind, deaf idiot. START sticking up for real musicians, not these fake creations devoid of artistic merit or one ounce of soul.

rbblum Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 03:13 AM EST

Your article Madonna + Britney + Justin = Sadness is only a small dose of reality when auditing the music entertainment books . . . . it is bankrupt and there are currently no original ideas nor talent left to draw from the well on a modest scale. Just a fact: The overly rated American Idol supports the concept of a bankrupt entertainment industry by exposing a broad, desperate audience to a program mocking and teasing the audience with a lot of static; not talented, expiring entertainers.

Unfortunately your article misses the point with a lot of current music fans only because they have not been exposed to the real lifelong contributions of those talented musicians of yesteryear. Also unfortunate is there are no current trends rising from the music industry ashes. But most unfortunate of all is the inability or unwillingness of music starved audiences to learn what is lacking in order to recreate it themselves or demand it from those who lip sync it.

JC Sun, Nov 9, 2008 at 12:44 AM EST

This is ridiculous. That anyone could ever think these three have made any sort of decent music at all, let alone pay goodness knows how much money to see them live is an insult to good music and real musicians everywhere.

Victor Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

All three of them are hot! Especially "Britney". But I gotta ask......where the hell is the "Livin' La Vida Loca" man? Ricky what's doin' bro? Come on man......let's show these people what sexy is all about!

ALL I CAN SAY FOR THE HATERS, SHE IS LAUGHING HER WAY TO THE BANK EVERY TIME FOOLS, AND YOU HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO THAN COMPLAIN DONT LIKE-DONT WATCH THAT SIMPLE PEOPLE. BUT WE MUST GIVE HER CREDIT SHE IS STILL ROCKING AT 50 WITH THAT BODY THAT MANY OF US WHICH WE HAD AT THAT AGE OR IN OUR 20'S@ 30'S. SHE IS AN AMAZING BUSINESS WOMAN, LETS FACE IT, NOW WE SEE YOUNG MUSICIANS WHO LOOK LIKE GARBAGE AND SOUND OMG.... SAVE YOUR ENERGY MADONNA NEVER GIVE A F--- ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE SAID.....

Sharon Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

Leave them alone. If you have issues don't go to the concert. Madonna is and always will be the queen. Britney and Justin are two both very talented singers and have sold out all their concerts in the past. Having the 3 of them together on one stage is an absolute bonus! I think is was a wise choice on Madonna's part.

Tracy Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

For everyone out there who thinks Madonna is too old, get with the program. Age is of the mind and it's not the 1950's people..it's 2008!! I just caught her in Vancouver and she is amazing..still pushing those boundaries for us all! We're all going to get old but the whole idea now is there is no reason to stop doing what we love because we are a certain age? I believe everyone who is complaining about her..you are probably still very young and just don't get it yet. We don't all curl up and die when we get to 50..not anymore..it's a new day and a new age and I for one think she can do whatever she likes. She's still filling the stadiums...get it yet? When you have the talent and a gift..you just keep giving until you don't want to anymore.

Peace Out!!

Allen Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 01:09 AM EST

Madonna is old. She is very old. Timberlake and Brittney also had their 15 minutes of fame. Mike Jackson knew it was over when he moved to Bahrain for a time. It's time for these 3 entertainers to do the same and, "Beat it".

Jennifer Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

I LOVE all three of them by themselves and together! Who cares about age anyways. It took me a few times listening to Madonnas lates CD but it really grew on me and now I love it. I think it was clever of M to hook up w/JT in the height of his career. She's a brilliant business woman. As always.....

Robbyrob Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

I'm sick and tired of some fans of Madonna putting the weight of the entertainment world on her shoulders. Why must she invent her music EVERY time she releases new material? I find it great that Timbaland and Justin wanted to work with Madonna and vice versa. Hard Candy was very good and wasn't meant to change the world...just to move your hips a bit. I think for hitting 50 she's doing quite good. Her tour is selling out the majority of shows, attracting major celebs in the audience, she reinvents her songs, and does dance routines some 20 year olds couldn't handle. I don't understand the problem here. If you don't like her, don't watch or listen. I don't like everything she does but she's far from over. She makes me happy and has been a constant in my life. That you can never undo. If you want to mention 'sadness' and an artist, how about Janet Jackson. What happened to that tour?

paige Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

slezak is still hating, i see.

Brad Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

I think she used an opportunity for her advancement. There is NOTHING wrong with that!!!!! Britney is hot and she is back. Madonna is smart and successful. Her concert would have been a success without Britney or Justin. But heck; why not invite them? Do you know how many hits have hit the internet today alone looking for stuff on last night? Think about it, Madonna is a musician, but she is also an entrepreneur she just made a sound business decision. I commend her for it. I am just upset that I didn’t get to see the power house of 3 on stage together. After all that is probably what prompted this article…… we are all just upset we didn’t get to see it in person!

stiffette Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

"hey stiffy" how about it huh? lets get our freak on

steve Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

Now that Cloris Leachman is available for being voted off from Dancing w/the Stars, Madonna should add her to the act to get more sales from the geriatrics generation too! They could dance to the 'Frankestein' theme from the '70's and create the 'Last Picture Show' combo for both of them (with a Mary Tyler Moore twist and 'Fact's of Life' theme)! You take the good, you take the bad...obviously! All the remixes would all have to be done in 'Spanglish', of course!

Alberto Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Madonna is the GREATEST concert act of all time! No one puts a show on quite like her. Those of us that know & appreciate that just laugh at all the haters for wasting their time writing about someone they can't stand. As an inductee of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, you'd think Madonna would get a little respect from people like Michael Slezak. I don't see you writing about why Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan don't get played on the radio. Madonna forever!

Wes Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

This is an incredibly ageist and sexist article. Madonna puts on the best, most innovative and modern show out there (I saw her in Chicago). She mixes new and old songs seamlessly, and never tires. Britney and Justin aren't there because she's trying to make her show hipper; they're there because they've collaborated with her in the past and are there to celebrate. Would you say anything if Dave Grohl joined Bruce Springsteen on stage? What about Beyonce and Prince? Of course not. Men are allowed to salute younger generations without looking desperate. Wish you'd allow the same from someone as vital and interesting as Madonna. Not that she needs you to one bit. Anyone who's seen her knows it's a one-woman show, regardless of who else appears.

Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

I think its awesome!!! Congrats!!

steve Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

The only time I paid to see Madonna was at the Squire Strip Club during her pre shaving days. $5.00 a beer. She was booed severly,,,,

stiffy Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

Yes, she hit only #35 with Britney's hit 'Me Against...', but fared better with Justin's #3 hit '4 Minutes'. Perhaps Madonna wants to sing all her 2000 and up hits only (not that many). Who knows? I love her dance maxi singles from 'Hard Candy', but maybe no one else (near her age) wants to share the stage with her? Yes, I agree she's like "nervously carrying her lunch tray into the pop culture cafeteria." Instead, she needs to be the "eccentric teacher" and be more eclectic and entering for the very first time with new ideas.

Joseph Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

SUCK ON THIS. BRITNEY IS BACK & MADONNA KNOWS IT !

Jane Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

Chris, don't blame Slezak for Madonna's currently disappointing efforts. He is like the rest of us in that he's wanting better out of her and not getting it. And you can't say it's because Slezak is a hater. He's just doing what we all of Madonna's disappointed fans are doing- using his ears and no longer making excuses for Madge. Can her career be saved? I think so. But it won't happen if Madonna insists on marketing herself as a 20-something. She needs to embrace her age, find good music that you want to hear, then go out there and act like she's the person that all these pop babies aspired to when they were kids, because that's exactly what she was.

Joey Jo Jo Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

Ray of Light was the last great album from her. It's been all downhill since then.

Camilla Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

Madonna is such old news. Who really gives a crap about her anymore... legend you say?-Please! She has totally lost her mind!! She NEEDS Brit and Justin to make something of her concert. ....and look in the mirror for once when you dance Madonna-you look like a fool!!

John Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 09:12 AM EST

The only reason Madonna is using these popular "younsters" is to try to prove that she is still relevant. BUT SHE IS NOT!! And her last album was FAR from a success saleswise... By the way, Brit isn't the only lyp-syncher... Madonna is notorious for that as well except music critics seem afraid to talk about it. Give me real singer Celine anyday over fake Madge!

de Sascha Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

Well,
here we go again . . .
in the past Madonna hooked up on stage, with Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Anthony (from chilli peppers), Missy Elliot, Babyface, Pharrel, etc, surly I forgotten a few . . .
so what ???
Is that something new??
Well,
Madonna is kinda cool but Hard Candy is not one of my favorites.
" She is not me " is the only outstanding track, at least for my own tastes. And "Miles away" & " Voices " is not bad . . .
My favs are , Ray of Light, Confessions, Bedtime Stories !!
Also Bedtime Stories has really URBAN Flavour and it's quite an underrated accomplished piec of work from 1994! People seem to forget that.
Another one is the " Like a Prayer " Album which is quite SoulPop and that is way back in 1989.
Blah, blah . . .
Success is success, even on a commercial, outselling nature like this....
I'm sure the Material Mum will come out wif summin@ deeper again some time soon....

Einen lieben Gruss
de Sascha

I think it's nice that Madonna and Britney are swinging by to sing for the Justin fans...........

Stephanie Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

Madonna does not ever belong in Vegas. Should she ever go that route, I will write her many personal letters and send her my own money in an effort to convince her otherwise. She is not a Vegas star. Give the woman a break, she's going through a divorce...the pop queen diva is only human...plus, Madonna in essence GAVE BIRTH to Britney, so it only makes sense to me that she would give her opportunity to lip synch in a show or two. Peace.

Clearsky54 Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 08:00 AM EST

The fact that Britney may have lip-synched in the past, and, yes, badly, is no reason to make the sweeping assumption she will until the end of time. As for Maddie using hot talent to keep her name in lights -- who cares? That's what people do. She did co-opt crazes, and did so well... but at this point in her career, the woman needs to evaluate if she actually has any purpose in the pop world. To sit spread-eagled on her album cover and thrust her box at the world at this point in time, after making such a big deal out of adopting an African child who already had a father who loved him (just not the money to care for him)... this is a pathetic comment on who she thinks she is or has to be. I don't care what kind of music she sings; I think she needs to reevaluate what the purpose of her life is at 50. That's my take, meaningless in her world, this world or any other except my own.

Chris Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 05:07 AM EST

Fantastic choice for Madonna to have the Prince and the Princess join the Queen. It's choices like these that have made Madonna the most successful singer of all time. She is so much better than Elvis, Micheal etc... No-one is better than Madonna. She is so successful that it annoys people ie:the writer of this crappy article. To the writer - Madonna is more successful than you are now and you will ever be. Millions of people love Madonna. From what people have written here it seems you don't even get basic respect. Not many people like you, many hate you. Hopefully your superiors will take note of this and get rid of you. You are a no-body and you will remain a no-body because you don't have the brains like Madonna has and all you can do is sit there and stew everytime she does something. Well get use to it, with her live nation deal you will be stewing for at least another decade, and knowing Madonna, even longer. Will you still be around 10 years from now? I don't think so :)

We went to the concert tonight and it was tremendous. Madonna commands the crowd and has amazing stamina. The concert started almost 3 hours late and she took it right to midnight. The cameos (that is all they were) were excellent to add just a little extra, but neither was over the top.

We were even lucky enough to be exiting onto Sunset right as Madonna's limo (with Police Escort) zipped through giving us a free path right behind them and out not even 5 minutes after she left the stage.

For my family it was exciting from the moment she entered the stage to the drive down Sunset after.

Thanks for a great show

I was at this concert tonight at Dodger stadium - it was absolutely fantastic from beginning to end. Creative, nostalgic yet modern, hands down the best dancing/choreography and staging that I've ever seen in a live concert. Britney's role was minimal but well-received and Justin was great without trying to steal thunder. The crowd went wild for all of them, but there was no question that Madonna was MADONNA. She commands your attention and is iconic for a reason. I don't think anyone there tonight could or would characterize her as anything short of remarkable.

Mr. Slezak is a concerned fan and I like his ramblings. BUT....I just got back from the LA show and it was SPECTACULAR! Britney only did part of the song "Human Nature" and the crowd ate it up. Justin and Madonna's performance of 4 Minutes was fantastic! Even though the show wasn't completely sold out, there were still around 50,000 people there..a huge amount of people for one concert.

I don't understand why people have to rag about madonna justin timberlake and britney spears, yeah i mean they are kind of getting old but give them a break, its their job, and its not their fault that get bad publicity, and the paparazzi makes them go crazy thats all you are seeing, if any of them hadn't gotten all of the bad publicity then there wouldn't be this stupid comment blog and jeeeez just leave them alone!

I saw Madonna show in San Diego on Election night, and it was electrifying! some seem to forget that she does donate some of her proceeds to charities. Paying the price tag is well worth it, it is an awesome show. have seen her many times, and will continue to do so.

There is nothing sad about this prospect whatsoever. Madonna has always done what she has wanted to do. With her, you learn to expect the unexpected. Any hangups that any of you may have are your own problems to work on. The fact is that all three of these individuals are legendary. She's a unifier, not a divider like so many of you haters out there. All three of them will be remembered and spoken of for years to come. Will any of you? What have any of you done for any cause higher than your own? The world is a better place because of MADONNA. Deal with it. Absolutely no regrets.

FIRST OF ALL, MADONNA'S LATEST HIT SINGLE IS A DUET WITH JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE. HOW COOL FOR HIM TO BE AT THE LA SHOW AT DODGER'S STADIUM!

SECOND, BRITNEY IS ON THE VIDEO SCREENS DURING HUMAN NATURE. HOW COOL TO HAVE HER ACTUALLY THERE AS WELL!

WHY HATE?

MADONNA IS THE QUEEN OF POP, SHE DOES WHAT SHE WANTS, WITH WHOM SHE WANTS, WHENEVER SHE WANTS.

I THINK PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAYING MADONNA'S DESPERATE SINCE.......DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN!!!!!!!

GET OVER IT.

Oh, I would love to see what she does with Britney and Justin. I loved the addition of Kayne West and Timberlake to hard candy. Awesome bass voice! I couldn't figure out how she would pull off the concert without them, but I loved her approach. Too bad, I used to live close to LA and would have had tickets if I still lived there. I think her all of her recent Cds have been awesome and she is one creative performer. I'd like to see her produce an awesome spectacular on broadway.

Assuming Britney and Justin join Madonna onstage, let's see what they do before we judge it.

All three should be setting trends at every stage of their careers. Maybe they'll do something fresh and unexpected tonight. Maybe.

I've never understood M's fascination with Britney and Justin. I have been a fan since Lucky Star, and I don't always like what she does, i.e. Saying the F-word 13 times on Letterman. I think her collaboration on this album was definitely experimental. I was lukewarm when I heard it for the first time, but it eventually grew on me, kind of like Bedtime Stories and the Dick Tracy soundtrack. Hopefully, she'll grow bored of them all soon and move on to bigger and better musical inspirations. Personally, I'd like to see her do a jazz album. And I think she should be watching Lady Gaga. She is a real, raw talent similar to M when she first came onto the scene.
