Holiday songs you secretly hate -- 'fess up!

Nov 19, 2008, 08:30 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Happy Holidays, Music, PopWatch Confessional

Is there a holiday song for which you harbor an irrational hatred? Here's why I'm asking. I received Faith Hill's Christmas album, Joy to the World, in the mail a few weeks ago but held off listening to it until yesterday. (I blame the snowflakes I saw in Happy Valley, PA last weekend with weakening my resolve to wait until after Thanksgiving.) It turns out, I kinda hate "Joy to the World." Nothing against Faith (who does particularly lovely versions of "Away in a Manger," "Silent Night, Holy Night!" and "O Holy Night!," by the way), but I just can't get it up for a song that is neither as sweet and/or stirring as those previously mentioned, nor as naughty as Elvis' "Santa Claus is Back in Town" (which I still maintain is the sexiest holiday song ever). The only people I actually want to hear sing "Joy to the World" are Clark W. Griswold, in Christmas Vacation, and my sister, who sings those four words sarcastically whenever the Bierly family Christmas takes a turn for the worst.

So, which holiday song can't you stand? My mother refuses to listen to "The Christmas Song," even when Nat King Cole is singing it. That's just wrong.

Worst song EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kendra Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

Oh and I also hate "12 days of christmas", but I love Jeff Foxworthy's version "12 Redneck days of christmas"!!

Kendra Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

I agree with "Chestnuts roasting". My family knows that I hate that song, and my brother got me a great card last year. It has a bird sitting on the mantle of a fireplace, rather close to the fire. There's an arrow pointing down at him that says "Chet". You open up the card, and it's says "Chet's nuts roasting on an open fire..." I laughed my @$$ off!

AmyG Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

KJ - RIGHT ON!!!! I chortle every time I hear Toto's "Africa" now because I can only hear the "five golden rings" bit.

Katie Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

Here are my top 5 worst:
1. Christmas Shoes
2. Stanta Baby
3. Baby It's Cold Outside
4. Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer
5. Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time

Jessica Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 11:49 PM EST

i don't understand why everyone's hating on Christmas Shoes, I always thought it was a sweet song...
but i cannot stand White Christmas!! there's only two versions i stand, but usually i abhor it!

huntre Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 10:26 PM EST

Stevie Nicks' version of "Silent Night" makes my ears bleed. Terrific for peeling paint.

Kristina Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

I hate, hate, HATE "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." What exactly about that song rocks? Maybe I'm missing something. And there's this one Johnny Cash song - "Christmas As I Knew It," or something like that - that bums me out every time I hear it.

I do, though, secretly love "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer."

moonshdw Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 08:07 AM EST

Xmas shoes....I can't get to the darn radio fast enough to hit the off button! I'm with Brenda, Bob Rivers Twisted Xmas collections are a great pick me up after Carol Overload. So is the CryptKeepers Christmas!

JJ Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 08:00 PM EST

Right on Jim. DO NOT change, add to or take away from the classics. I want to throw up when I hear someone try to give a "soulful" performance of a beautiful song like "O Holy Night" or "Silent Night" it makes my skin crawl and I weep for the future.

KJ Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

My most hated sonmg used to be 12 Days of Christmas until I heard Straight No Chaser's version. It had me on the floor laughing. Now my No. 1 is Chrsitmas Shoes, when I hear it I want to hang myself. It has to be the MOST DEPRESSING SONG EVER!!!

Lori P Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

*Christmas Shoes... I shut off the radio.
*Grandma Got Run Over...
*Santa Baby

Jim Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

truth be told i have not found a Christmas song that I dislike.....a lot that I am not fond of....but not dislike. I will agree that Christmas Shoes is bad...horribly bad. Xmas is over is also a BAD dare i say TERRIBLE. I love the old carols...the way they were meant to be sung.....not destroyed by these idgits that figure that they need to update them. Please give us all break.

I do agree that they start playing them too soon. I like ti starting in December and ending around the 28 or so......

Brenda Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

pumpkinandy: (I'm still laughing, I'll have to get back to you.....)

And CAROL OF THE BELLS is worse than torture.

Amy Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

The absolute worst Christmas song - "The Christmas Shoes", no surprise there. I thought it was a joke the first time I heard it and was horrified to learn it was a real song.
Runners up:
So This is Christmas
Wonderful Christmastime
Baby, It's Cold Outside

The Grinch Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

Here is my confession... I can't stand any Christmas music. It starts playing in October and by the time Christmas actually arrives I am ready to run a drill through my ears. I am not sure wich is worse, the cheezy pop songs or the overplayed, overochestrated holiday classics. I am so happy I do not work in a job that plays Holiday music non stop. I think I would go insane. I don't understand how radio stations can go to a 24/7 Christmas format. I have to delete two stations from my car radio for the month of December or risk permanent brain damage. I can't wait until January.

Joey in WV Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Ugh, I have ALWAYS hated Little Drummer Boy and Do You Hear What I Hear.... Gag!

Brenda Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

ANYTHING THAT ISN'T ABOUT THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS. That should be just about every freaking "carol" out there! Think about it, people: why do we need to hear N'Sync or Timberlake or [shudder] Britney whining about lost love or a melting snowman?? There are only about 12 songs total in all these comments that we can all probably agree are the worst! When I get tired of the annoying, senseless, cloying, irritating crappy songs floating around, I pull out my "Twisted Christmas" and enjoy "The Rest Room Door Said Gentlemen" and "The Chimney Song" and "A Tribute from the King" and "We Wish You Weren't Living With Us". And then I turn on Vince Gill's Breath of Heaven CD and truly celebrate the season.

JT Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

ANY Christmas song by Stevie Wonder or Gloria Estefan
Christmas Shoes (blech!)
Do They Know It's Christmas?

Joanne R Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

Dominick the Donkey is the worst! Hee, Haw, Hee, Haw.

Neesa Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 01:17 AM EST

Overall I think this is a good list, though I didn't see anyone mention Bryan Adam's "Christmas Time." And I know a lot of people would hate me for this but I can't stand Charlie Brown's "Christmas Time is Here."

cathy anne Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

I really can't stand The Chipmunk Song-listening to tone deaf rodents who've been sucking on helium really makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up

Daddy Please Dont get drunk this Christmas by John denver..never heard of it..but sounds awful. Why would you make a song like that? Painful! Anyway, I just hate all of them in general that play throughout the stores from early Nov to Christmas time. I used to work retail in high school and thankfully now dont have to work it and listen to it all day. I feel bad for the retail workers, so if they're crabby you should understand why! :) My list includes:
-Santa Claus is coming to town by Bruce Springsteen (he does sound constipated)
-Hey Santa by Wilson Phillips (cheezy! Have you seen the video? Cheezier!)
-This Christmas is AWFUL!
-Drummer Boy - enough said.
-Rockin Around the Christmas Tree, I agree, who ever saw someone 'rock' around it?
-Sleigh Ride - too psychotically happy!
-Grown Up Christmas List - again, people trying to be all sappy!
-Frosty the Snowman - It always made me sad as a kid cuz he melts away. Why is this fun for kids?

Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

Drummer Boy does suck. I always hated it since I was little. All those rum pumpum pums..cheezy if you ask me. And what baby would like to listen to a drum? Stupid. Also hate any songs that the pop singers try to "remake". Always sounds like they are trying too hard to make it all r&b ish or something. Another one I hate is We Three Kings. I had to play it all the time in piano lessons..so monotone and boring. I just want this to end..it blairs outside of Circuit City so you can already hear it when you get out of your car in the parking lot. What's wrong with this world? It isn't painful enough to hear it in the store? Now we have to hear it outside as well? Get with it people!! It's not even Thanksgiving yet!

Shorty Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

*Wonderful Christmastime (Ugh!)
*Do You Hear What I Hear? (Forced to sing in HS choir, no one was into it so it brings bad memories of horrible, off-key singing)
*Santa, Baby (Make it stop!)
*Baby, It's Cold Outside (I agree with everyone who calls it the Christmas date-rape song)
*Winter Wonderland (HATE cold weather and snow, anything that glorifies/reminds me of it)
*The Christmas Song
*Little Drummer Boy (nonsense and too slow)

Matthew L Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

I came here fully expecting a bunch of people saying that they hate Snoopy's Christmas, since in my experience it seems to be a really divisive song. Personally, I love the song, so I'm glad no-one else has mentioned it.

That said, I hate pretty much every Christmas song (except for Snoopy's Christmas) - including carols. They all just sound the same, like they're relying on the sentiment to hide how awful the actual songs are. The problem is that I'm a Christian, and my church tends to bring out the odd carol in the last couple of weeks before Christmas, which really annoys me. And I don't remember the last time I actually went to an actual Christmas service.

Love Christmas Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 04:16 AM EST

"Christmas in July'', too depressing beyond words. A child is dying in July so his parents create Xmas for him during the summer. The song also mention the neighbors laughing at them you would too if you ever heeard this turkry. My mother made us listen to it every Christmas we would laugh ourselves silly, she really got mad!

Love Christmas! Mon, Nov 24, 2008 at 03:50 AM EST

Why isn't anyone mentioning "Xmas in July', that song sucks. It starts with ''You are putting up your Xmas tree too early.

Liz Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 11:17 PM EST

I hate, hate, hate "Happy XMas (War is Over)" and "Last Christmas" (what's up with that one anyway--last christmas I gave you my heart and the very next day you gave it away?? What's that all about??) My coworkers intentionally play them because they know I hate them...I may go crazy this year...

Mary Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

I think the worst is "Please Daddy Don't Get Drunk This Christmas" by John Denver. This is followed closely by "Blue Christmas" Elvis is ok, but the backup singers make me nuts.

GizmoDuck Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

There are no holiday songs I secretly hate. Actually, there's nothing I secretly hate. I have no need to keep my hatred of anything secret. As for holiday songs, there are none I even dislike, only those I love slightly less than others.

HellsBelles Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

When barks, meows, or misc annoying sounds are considered instruments. I mean, really!? Are we entertained?

That and the contrived 'Feliz Navidad'.

Gretchen Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

Any new "pop" Christmas songs - I love me some Justin Timberlake, but those N*SYNC carols kinda annoy the hell out of me.

Elizabeth F. Guth Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Christmas Shoes makes me long for death.

Donner Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

I am amazed that "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" does not figure more prominently here. Paticularly when folks have to throw in lines that are not in the song, such as "like a light bulb!" -- makes me want to set fire to Christmas trees and watch melting tinsel drip and set fire to the carpet. I start out feeling kinda sorry for Rudolph and by the end I think cutting him out of reindeer games is too mild -- we need hunters and shotguns. And Twelve Days of Christmas was surely crafted in an assylum for the criminally insane.

seattle_girl Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 06:26 AM EST

I have an irrational hatred for "Silent Night". Wayyyy. Too. Slow. And my husband and daughter threaten to throw their bodies from the moving car any time I play "Baby It's Cold Outside".
Best song is "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by Barenaked Ladies and Sarah MacLachlan.

Scott Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 03:50 AM EST

Chocolate Rain...

Eli Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 03:44 AM EST

I haven't read any of the below comments, and I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but I absolutely loathe the "Santa, Baby" song. There is NOTHING appealing about some tramp trying to seduce Santa with cringe-worthy double entendres and puns. Gag me with a spoon. In fact, I'd go so far as to advocate the fining of all those who have ever performed or were otherwised involved in the performance of that song ever. Seriously, who's bright idea was it to come up with that garbage.

joe Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 03:21 AM EST

Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses....Horrible!!!! Everytime I hear it I want to take a hammer to the radio.

debbiew Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 02:48 AM EST

It has to be "Little Drummer Boy." When I was in second grade, we lived in the front apartment in a building on Main Street. The Salvation Army had its booth right below us and I swear the only song they played for the ENTIRE HOLIDAY SEASON was that awful song! To this day I can't stand it.

I've never heard "Christmas Shoes," but judging from what everybody has written about it, I don't think I want to.

Tay Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 02:21 AM EST

I cannot stand the song Christmas in the Northwest. After hearing it maybe once or twice.. I am DONE!

Anne-Marie Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 01:23 AM EST

Any Christmas music played before December 1st annoys me! But I particularly loathe 'Christmas Shoes' and that irritating Christmas song by the Chipmunks.

razor Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

eric's comment about the stupid "coming down the chimey down" song just took me back to my retails days at service merchandise—where i was forced to here that shite and the goddawful "and a song for the christmas tree" a hundred times a day.

good times, good times. but i did get my christmas wish—the company went bankrupt.

ES003 Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 12:24 AM EST

Every time I hear "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" or "Jingle Bell Rock" while I'm out shopping, I want to rip my own ears off and throw them at the store manager that allowed either song to be played.

Caroline Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST

"These Are a Few of My Favorite Things" I don't know if this is the title or not and I am pretty sure it was not intended as a Christmas song, but it drives me nuts every Christmastime. I can't even stand to hear an instrumental version.

Megan Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

'Christmas Shoes' just shoot me now...

Fatima Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

I LURVE every Christmas song for the most part and I'm not ashamed of it. Some of you disgust me!

ollie Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

only one thats good and funny if you dont listen to it too much is the tweleve pains of christmas

Lynn Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST

"Carol of the Bells" - it's absolutely creepy, serial killer theme music.

Eric Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

My most hated Christmas song contains my sentiments about it within:

"It's the holiday season
With the WHOOP-DE-DO and hickory dock
And don't forget to hang up your sock"

But my least favorite part of the song has to be:

"He'll be coming DOWN the chimney DOWN!"

Stupid, stupid song. We hates it forever!

Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 08:49 PM EST

I really really really despise Simple Having a Wonderful Christmas time. It makes me want to hurt people.

Taylor Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

That Britney Christmas song is so overrated. Nobody likes her anymore, so why do they play it at all? Why can't all ten of her remaining fans go have a private party somewhere and leave us alone?

Linda Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 08:04 PM EST

Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire has got to be the most mundane song on earth.

Scotty B. Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

"Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" was twisted and funny when I was a kid in the 80s (and you only ever heard it on Dr. Demento), but as I got older, they re-recorded the song, and the song lost it's punch.

Originally, the question "Should we open up her gifts or send them back?" was left without any response, which is SIGNIFICANTLY funnier than the later version, which added the chorus shouting "Send Them Back!"

The ambiguity in the original version's morality was, in its way, a biting commentary of people's avarice at Christmas; the later version became a silly, quasi-redneck cliche.

Meg Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 07:46 PM EST

"Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time" by Demi Lovato--I've only heard it on the television commercial, but I pretty much hate Demi Lovato anyway. "Simply" was an average, tolerable Christmas song until she started screaming it in her scream-o style. Nails on a chalkboard. I hate The Beach Boys' "Little Saint Nick" and while I used to love "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer," I think it's excruciatingly painful these days...why'd they have to make a cartoon to go with it?

Chicagogirl Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

Little Drummer Boy

I was snowed in at an airport once and it was playing just about continuously. Pa rum pum pum agony.

Cindy Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

I cannot stand "Carol of the Bells" -- the same 4 notes over and over and over.....like listening to a jackhammer. I am not crazy about "The Little Drummer Boy" either. Same problem: those rum-pa-pum-pums get awfully tedious after awhile. And I think that most 'celebrity' Christmas albums are obnoxious because, rather than just sing the carrols in the traditional manner that we all know and love (unless they are the songs we hate, of course!), they try to put their own mark on them and usually end up ruining them. I agree that "Feliz Navidad" is WAY overplayed, but I think it is because it is the only Spanish Christmas song that most people know. So I suggest that somebody hurry and write a really good Christmas song in Spanish!

Lis Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 07:07 PM EST

Josh Groban's version of I'll Be Home for Christmas is far and away the very worst Christmas song ever recorded in the history of the world. Besides blatantly trying to tug at your heartstrings by beginning with "messages" (I highly doubt they're real) from children of parents who are fighting in Iraq, Josh is just way to over the top. Christmas music should be something you can curl up to in front of a fire, and Josh Groban doesn't allow you that luxury, because he's trying way too hard to be "meaningful". Blech, blech, blech.

Diana Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

*Blue Christmas a la Elvis
*Christmas Shoes
*Any christmas song sung by Gloria Estefan

Martok Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

Feliz Navidad & Grandma got runned over by a Reindeer are the worst.

Chrsitmas @ Ground Zero is the best

KLSB Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

The worst Christmas song of all time has to be "O CHRISTMAS TREE". I can't believe anyone would even listen to that song. Have you noticed that it is not on very many singer's Christmas CDs.

Lexie Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

I absolutely LOATHE "Christmas Shoes" it makes me cringe every time I hear it

Kate Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

I hate hate HATE Little Drummer Boy. All the pa-rum-pa-pum pum is incredibly annoying. Its more than half the song.

TheGrinch Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Last year a guy in my dorm had about 12 different versions of "Last Christmas," mostly by Cantonese singers, and he would play them all back to back. I can't believe either of us survived.

Sarah Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 05:39 PM EST

"Grandma got run over by a reindeer" - Every time I hear it, I have an almost physical hate reaction!

London Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 05:31 PM EST

For some reason that Christmas Shoes song (is that even the right title) makes me contemplate mass murder. I really don't know why maybe because its Saccharinely sweet, and tries a little hard to be all touching, but whatever the reason every time it comes on I have to change the station.

Jul Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

I'm really not a big fan of Mariah Carey's "All i Want for Christmas is you". Actually, I think it's terrible.

Ana Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

"Santa Baby" is my pick for the most horrible Christmas song. Any time it comes on, I immediately shut it off. There's nothing cute or sexy about it.

Gary Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

Well the Xmas music has resumed at least as of Nov. 16 at the Wal*Mart grocery. When I first heard it I thought I'd taken too many pills or something...couldn't believe it starting already. Places used to wait until Thanksgiving to start assaulting us with this stuff.

I visited Las Vegas around Xmas 2006 and it was piped into many of the hotels and outside common areas...couldn't get away from it. I guess I just don't understand the fascination with or desire to hear it over and over.

Anyway having said that...part of the Las Vegas Xmas music compilation was that horrendous Karen Carpenter Xmas song...think it starts out "Merry Xmas Darling." It practially induces nausea and suicidial ideation as does any other of her music. It reminds me of some Hallmark cards...so sugary sweet, corny, artificial...the card practically glues to your fingers.

However...if I had to listen to an Xmas album...I'd choose Diana Krall's, the jazz artist...not bad. The orchestration is good.

Perpetual hymn of an open book.

Like an iced

a glimmer.

peggy Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

I can't stand "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano. It is so over-played. One year on a Christmas eve road trip to get my sister coming home from Europe, my mom, hubby and i made up silly lyrics for it. While we were in the mall waiting for her flight, it came on the sound system and we danced around a kitchen store singing and laughing until we were asked to leave. Good times!

LeapDayBaby Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

@sorry & Lora - that Dan Fogelberg (not Kenny Loggins) song is called "Same Old Lang Syne". I used to loathe it too, but it's grown on me the past few years.

However, I will always give "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" and "Christmas Shoes" a miss. *Always*.

Manda Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

I hate "Little Drummer Boy." Any incarnation of it. It's long and repetitious and sends turns me into a seething ball of irrational rage at its seemingly unending droning.

Chris Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

I'm glad to know I'm not alone in hating "Wonderful Christmastime" by Paul McCartney. It's a big joke now where my family will leave me voicemail messages with that playing in the background. Also, I really like Vanessa Williams' version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside", but I absolutely cannot stand Dolly Parton and Rod Stewart singing it. They doun't sound good together at all.

justjack Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

OMG where do I start??? I've never heard Christmas Shoes either but now I have a morbid fascination... gotta agree with Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime, Holly Jolly Xmas, Rockin around, LIttle Drummer Boy... and for me, Do you hear what I hear, mainly because my dad always sang it in church on Christmas Eve.... and Winter Wonderland makes my skin crawl too. But really I just find Christmas so annoying in general that it would be easier to ask me what Christmas songs I DO like... it would certainly be a shorter list... um... I'll let you know if I think of one...

Caraline Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

Reading this list is dangerous! Thanks to Colin I know have the hated "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time" stuck in my head. This is why I wear my iPod during Christmastime shopping excursions.

Jordan Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

Winter Wonderland. Ever since I was forced to sing it in front of the whole school with my 6th grade class, my ears bleed a little whenever it comes on now.

Also, Jingle Bell Rock and Rockin Around the Christmas Tree... are they the same song?

Donna Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

I agree with Jessica S. No one sings Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas like Judy Garland. Hers is the best version ever, the first version and (ofcourse I like Sinatra's too) the only version to send me to tears. Judy Garland knew how to emote her lyrics better than anyone. When Christina Aguilera does the song it just seems she's trying to show off how many notes she can hit and that's soulless to me. Garland sung from the heart and sends people to tears with her version.

QueenP Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

Also, I absolutely LOATHE the song "Christmas in Kilarney" by Anne Murray. I realize people in Ireland celebrate Christams too, but I can't describe the feelings of rage that come over me when I hear this song. Luckily, it's pretty obscure...unless your my mother. She plays this album endlessly at Christmas, and if I "accidentally" break the cd, she just goes out and buys another one. At my folks' house, there is no escaping this song.

Colin Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Definitely "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time."

I love The Beatles, but the song is just painful.

Callie Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

Ugh...any Christmas song sung by a Beatle somehow gets worse. I don't know how that happens. I also really hate "Go Tell It On the Mountain" with a passion, for reasons I just can't explain.

QueenP Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

I can no longer listen to "Baby, It's Cold Outside", which is a shame, because I love it. A few years ago, I was singing along to this song in my car (It was the Vanessa Williams version, and I do an awesome Vanessa Williams). I was so into it, I missed a stop sign and hit another car. No fear, the only lasting damage is my inability to enjoy that song ever again.

I work retail one Christmas season the manager of the store had 4 christmas tape playing daily from opening to closing daily; Bing Crosby, Kenny Rodgers, Elvis Presley and the final one name escapes me. One day the tape player ate the last three and all that was left was Bing and the manager wouldn't replace the destroyed tape or get new tape to play. So, to this day, Bing Crosby's White Christmas drives me into a near murderous rage. I can no longer stand that song, your sanity would be damaged if you had to listen to that song for eight hours a day for 3 weeks solid.

I sort of think all Christmas songs are annoying when they aren't played ON CHRISTMAS. But that might be becase my birthday is exactly the week before and it always feels sort of ruined.

'Silent Night'. Just can't get into it. It's so slow and...boring.

I hate the christmas song that is something like rockin down in chimney town or christmas town, or something like that. I also can't stand Little Drummer Boy. Where I work they play that song about every 10 minutes, and I want to hang myself.

Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas". Enough already.

I was just thinking this morning - as Christmas music blasted through the grocery store even though it's only November 22nd - I don't know what I hate more: "Wonderful Christmastime" by Paul McCartney or any version of "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree." Has anyone EVER actually "rocked" around or near a Christmas tree? That song is just stupid. Stupid, I say!

So help me, when I hear "Christmas Shoes" by Bob Carlisle I want to tear my ears from my head.

But apparently I'm missing something really great in that song since someone thought the song was good enough to base a movie off of. With Rob Lowe.

I hate that one song, I think it's by Kenny Loggins, about meeting an ex-lover in the grocery store and they go and drink and reminisce. Somehow he fits Christmas in there. Also terrible, "Do They Know it's Christmas?" by a ton of celebrities, and "Three Little Christmas Trees," by Stevie Wonder, I believe. Why would I want to listen to some weepy song on Christmas? Puh-leeze.

The version of "Baby, it's Cold Outside" by Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson. First of all, she sounds like she can't get a real breath in, and second, the CD was released right before they divorced: awwwwkwaaaard.

Sheryl Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

...and any tune that Kenny G infects...and let's not restrict that to Christmas tunes...;)

Sheryl Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

matthew c Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST
