Vote for (or against) Guns N' Roses' 'Chinese Democracy' single

Oct 22, 2008, 10:06 AM | by Chris Willman

Categories: Music

Gunsandroses_l_2 “Finally. ORGASM!”

This response, posted on a very active Guns N' Roses message board, was in reference to the official release this morning of GNR’s “Chinese Democracy,” the group’s first official single since “Oh My God” in 1999, and the title track of their first album of original material since Use Your Illusion I and II in 1991. Yes, we do use the word “group” loosely for what has essentially been a decade-and-a-half–in-the-making Axl Rose solo project, but why parse language at a climactic time like this?

Except, for some of us, the track is more of an anticlimax (not that even the greatest GNR song ever conceived could possibly be worth so sustained a buildup). You can hear the track here and judge for yourself and share your verdict in the comments section below. Our first impression? (Well, not really first, if you count the time we spent listening to leaked versions months ago.) It’s a pretty terrific blueprint for a hard-rock song in search of a chorus that never actually arrives.

Chris Willman reviews the track, after the jump.

The first minute of the 4:40 running time consists of get-the-juices-flowing sound effects; finally, a minute and a half in, we get an abridged version of that patented Axl scream, and then what feels like the buildup to a great refrain, but turns out to really be the refrain, which is moderately memorable at best. Some nice Slash-Who? soloing kicks in at just past the three-minute point, but it’s not nearly the catharsis the song seems (or needs) to be building toward.

The track isn’t yet available for official download, though it's been released to radio—where, we’re hearing, the reaction among morning jocks and their listeners this morning has been very mixed. What’s yours? Does this whet your appetite for the album any more or less than “Shackler’s Revenge,” another teaser track that came out a few weeks back as part of the Rock Band 2 game (and which has even less in the way of a hook, but a lot more gonzo guitar)? Share your finally realized hopes for Democracy or still-thwarted GNR dreams below. And if you have the slightest idea what the cryptic, vaguely-but-not-really-political lyrics mean—we're pretty sure it's the first time the Falun Gong and masturbation have come up in the same song—do share.

I just brought the album and my first impressions: It's pretty darn good. It may not go to the top album of all time but I think its up there with with use your illusion 1 2.

There's a new Guns N' Roses single, "Better," posted at Q1043.com:

AXL ROCKS!!!! CHINESE DEMOCRACY IS A KICK ASS ALBUM!!!

Nancy Sussmann Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

I think this is not gonna be one of the most popular songs. I really like it after I heard it a couples of time

Jimmy Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

Chinese Democracy will be 1 of the least popular songs from the album. Just wait till you here the rest of the songs. They are far and way much much better than Chinese Democracy.

anne Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

Contrary to previous posts, I wanted more than anything to LOVE this song. I've been waiting anxiously all this time and was really pulling for Axl and knew he couldn't just throw the same old stuff out. Different doesn't automatically mean better OR worse but in this case it equals mediocre at best. I've listened to the song repeatedly, hoping in vain it would grow on me, to no avail. More than anything, it reminds me of an unfinished recipe with too many ingredients. Axl tried too hard and waited WAY too long.

Jim Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

All of these people who comment on these articles with the "horrible" and "who cares", "not GNR" are so pathetic !! Has anyone seen or heard what kind of music is out there right now ??? It's mindblowing. Our big album selling music stars are from American Idol and Disney shows !! This song is so ass kicking. Stop looking for Paradise City or Sweet Child O Mine. If any of those Appetitie songs were released now they would not catch on. They'd get blasted probably. They're classics because of the time they came out. It's the same reason that a Supremes' song from the 60's wouldn't be a hit in 1990. It's not rocket science people. Give the guy some credit for trying to go in a different direction. He's also not a tool like other musicians who refuse or whine about playing their hits in concerts. The first 3 - 4 songs in his shows are from Appetite and he practically plays the entire album. So he knows what the fans want. Can't wait for the CD and some real rock n roll !!

CR Norman Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

This song is really good, with even better ones to follow. I just hope that his voice is still the same. Some of the leaks sound like his voice is different and not as good. However it shakes out, Axl is a artist who captures people's interest and I doubt most people even know why. I think he is a deep thinker who really can pull out those thoughts and put it to music and take people to special and unique places.

guns fan Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 06:42 AM EST

I hate people. They knew 15 years ago that when AXl released the firts single they were gonna hate it. No ones actually listening, there just reading all the critics and hating on the new Guns. The album will be a classic whether people admit it or not.

flo Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 04:18 AM EST

this is not a great song. but i´m glad the album is finally going to be released in 2008. i´m searching guns n'roses boards and fansites since 4 years now and after hearing all those leaks i don´t think i´ll be an album i´ll listen to longer than a week. but at least it´s out and i finally KNOW that it´s crap, compared to the old gn'r records. if it rocks i´d be supprised.

i just think axl should not use the name gn'r for this "band". if he´d release a record as axl rose he wouldn´t be under so much pressure. of course we expect a gnr record to sound like gnr. and "chinese demmocracy" or "shackler´s revenge" have nothing to do with what used to be "the most dangerous band in the world".

Christy Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 08:03 PM EST

"Madagascar" is a really great song. If there is a tour to back this album, which I'm sure there will be one, I hope Axl brings Izzy out again like he did two years ago to do some Izzy songs (i.e. "Patience").

Whoever wins Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Wow thats the polished turd?
illusion 1-N-2 only had two good songs on them and neither of those were writin by G-N-R either! thanx for the poo poo platter axl-

Earl Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

This track isn't that great.... but plenty of the other songs on that album are amazing!

Ms. Brownstone Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

The single sounds OK compared to the other horrendous techno inductrial pieces on the album.
The only reason i can think why Axl kept the Guns n Roses name is because it sells. Sadly as true fan of the Old GNR, my hopes for this album and new band is crushed from what i've heard

Patrick Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

Blech.

sammy j Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

MWWWWWWAAAA it doesn't sound like they did 20 years ago......

Get over it. This band rocks live. And to all the "it's not the same without Slash" whiners.....It wasn't gonna be the same without Izzy.

aintitfun22 Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

i swear to god, if i see that thing that thing about the pons singing "giant" again, and im going kill myself

JRC Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

All respect to G&R for having the insight and the balls to write about the worst fascist communist regime in modern history. Most other bands have censored their music on China's human rights in order to get permission to enter China for the big payoff. According to the UN, Falun Gong is being butchered by the thousands for peacefully standing up to protect their constitutional right to believe in their faith. Their organs are cut out of them and sold by the regime for billions of dollars. In order to hide these crimes the regime then "Blames" Falun Gong and spreads hatred against them so outsiders focus on the victim instead of the criminal, (a tactic used in every genocide throughout history.) “Chinese Democracy” targets the very real meaning of the hidden evil of the Chinese communist regime who have brainwashed many to believe that China is now just like a free democracy under communist rule and everything in China is just “Roses.” In reality, nothing is further from the truth.

Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 12:32 AM EST

The sound you hear in the beginning is people saying "Chinese Democracy Starts Now" in Chinese. Now that you understand, please stop bashing it. It helps to do a little research before you post.

Danielle Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 09:26 PM EST

Not my favorite, I would have chose "better" as a first single, but that's just me. This is more of an Axl solo record than a guns album, but hey Axl solo is definantly better than the Jonus Brothers....

morgan Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

ok im a huge gnr fan and i dont really like this tune but i heard some of the leaks and the stuff is really good two songs to look up "better" and "irs" are really good from chinese democracy

Fred Garvin Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

"Rock you like a Hurricane" anyone? This song sucks

Dave Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

Hi, killer tune. Sure it's not old guns, but anyone expecting it to be is mental. Axl himself said it would be different and wasn't even trying to sound like old guns.

The new ac/dc is the same old ac/dc, terrible, not to mention DAD ROCK.

Loved GNR back in the day but this was a bit of a let down when compared to the old stuff. That first minute of sound effect turned me off. I want music(!) not some intelligible mumblings/ramblings of background noise! As bad as sirens on other songs. Makes me pull over cause think an ambulance is coming!
The song is very good once it actually gets started. Can get out the hairspray and tease it up!

pooface Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

New GN'R is miles better than anything slash has done since his departure. How could anybody hate Ron Thal? the guy is a guitar freak of nature and totally fits in with GN'R, i love the new stuff equally with their old.

The review above was so negative that I was afraid to click on the link as I was a huge GN'R fan back in the day. I saw the new line up live in summer 2006 & hated the new guitarists. Anyway I bit the bullet this morning & I absolutely love the track. Vintage Axl for me.

wayne Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 04:29 AM EST

its a good song but i wish they had released "Better" or IRS. The album is going to be a killer and i hope it marks the return of a rock genius.

Robbie Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 01:40 AM EST

I was never a die hard fan but as a casual fan of GNR, I have to say this song is just not very good. The wait was not worth it.

Erick Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 12:31 AM EST

This is good stuff. Ive heard other stuff that floating around the internet from this album and its better than this first single. Check it out for yourself, its out there. But this song is rocking though.

nick Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 12:22 AM EST

the new song is good stuff I think. The first single has to rock, but I'm sure there will be some really good ballads on the album. I think if people stop hating and just listen they will like it.

Sean Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:40 PM EST

I think this album is what Axl Rose is all about. The only one thing he lacks is the bluesyness he had in back in the day, but he stil has his melody and depth to the song. This album is bacically axl's solo album, you have to expect to hear axl's songs, not slash's. Slash hasn't realesed a TERRIFIC album either. Velvet Revolver and Slash's Snakepit were not AS GOOD AS OLD GUNS N ROSOES.
This album is all about what Velvet Revolver lacked this whole time, Axl's inspiration.

Tom G Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

I am a HUGE GnR fan and have literally every album. Maybe I have unrealistically high expectations, but the single Chinese Democracy is just not that good. It was very disjointed and didn't really have any kind of hook. The first minute or so is worthless, then there is a build to...nothing much at all. The vocals are buried in the mix most of the time and the vocal melody of the chorus is uninteresting at best. It's certainly not bad, per se, but it is an incredibly mediocre effort. Very disappointing. Hopefully the rest of the album, which I'll buy anyway, will meet expectations.

Shamrock Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

I agree with those of you say, finally something different than the cookie cutter crap that is out there today where you can't distinguish one song from the next. Finally a bad that will rock.

cynthia Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

Awesome new GN'R song... Axl Rose can't do wrong.. he's the man and always will be.... guitarist Ron Thal kicks butt so give him a chance.

cindy woodrow Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

This is the most interesting song out there.

Kristen Zatina Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

I don't know if I'm more excited about the album itself or the release date actually being set ORRRR the free Dr. Pepper that was promised to every American upon Guns N' Roses' delivery. ROCK ON "CHINESE DEMOCRACY!" 17 years in the making! Talk about needing patience, yeeeeaaaa-eeehhh...

UN-RE-MAR-KA-BLE. Couldve been written/produced in 15 minutes rather than 15 years.

eric Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

I like the new song. Certainly better than whatever new Killers or Fallout Boy crap is ruining the airwaves these days.

Derek MacPhail Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

The guitarist, and I'm assuming it is indeed Buckethead, ROCKS! I think he's more diverse that (gotta love him) Slash.

Ali Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

Velvet Revolver is great, but I'll take the new GN'R material over them. The GN'R material is more interesting, has more depth and is better to me.

Nick Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

All this time for THAT? The guy has an ego the size of China. Give me a new Velvet Revolver release over this guys bulls**t anytime!!!

Mikey Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

I don't really care all that much for GNR, but you have to be fascinated by all the drama surrounding Chinese Democracy. Dr. Pepper once said as a joke that they would give everyone free Dr. Pepper "when GNR finally releases Chinese Democracy." I heard this morning they're going to deliver, so on the day it's finally released, you can go to Dr. Pepper's website and download a coupon for a free twenty ouncer!

Sarah Palin is God Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

Ali Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

The song lacked power? Ha ha! That song is aggressive and heavy and full of power. The lacking structure thing is funny, too. It's intro-verse-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-guitar solos-verse-chorus-outtro verse. Not exactly rocket science :)

Erin Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

Gawd. That was just....wrong. Seriously, the song lacked any sort of power or structure. It was lazy. It was predictable. And it was forgettable. Instantly. I will just close my eyes and pretend it never happened.

Ali Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

No, it does not matter in the context of reviewing the song, Annie. Reviewing the history behind the music, or the band membership is entirely different than reviewing the music. Doing any one of the first two things means you are failing to do the latter, reviewing the music itself.

Annie Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

It does matter who's not in the band b/c this band sounds flatter than the old Gn'R.

Ali Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

I think Sir-Maverick said it best, what are you reviewing, the time to make the record or the song itself? Two different things completely. Also, another different thing is whether or not this is the old band. There are a lot of irrelevant comments because people are considering the time in making the record and/or who is NOT in the band.

I remember being in high school in 1987/1988 and hearing GNR for the first couple of times...I didn't like it, Axl's voice and the music was...different! I think many people had the same initial reaction.

After a while though, it grew on me, and I came to appreciate the differences and the fact they were breaking new ground. They became my favorite band and music, and I saw them at Alpine Valley in 1988 I think. Those early albums are still my favorite of all time.

This song, as I have not heard any others, lacks all the things I remember from their early work, except for one thing...I don't initially like it at all. Problem is that there is no reason to not like it because it is new or different...it just is so mainstream and boring! Listening to it over and over this time, I think will just irritate me.

Where is the real GnR, I miss them!

Well, I listened to the new single last night. And it met my expectations, which means it sucked compared to the old stuff. At best, I was wholly unimpressed by this highly forgettable tune.

My Vote: Horrendous waste of time and money. I want my 5 minutes back.

It's all right. But I would rather listen to The Pons sing "Giant". If you want to listen to Giant just go to:
http://www.myspace.com/theponsmusic
Then just click on the song Giant. It's FREE

Plus, everyone complained that Use Your Illusion 1&2 didn't sound like Appetite when they came out, but Axl has evolved over the years and it shows.

Listened to it twice. The second time I forwarded past the first minute of oddness. It reminds me a bit of Use Your Illusion I and II, except of course, it is not as good. I hope this is not the best there is on this album. Good to hear Axl's voice, but I still need Slash Izzy and Duff. More excited that Appetite will be released again on vinyl. My two vinuly copies (one in the original cover that was banned) are a bit worn. Just thinking about how absolutely awesome Appetite was makes me nostalgic. And PO'ed.

I think a lot of people have a problem with axl's ego and put that above the music. I am guilty myself sometimes. ow whether this is "Guns N' Roses" or not is a huge debate, I don't think it is. But I must say, The music I've heard from Chinese Democracy has been amazing! Whether it's the band or not, Axl himself, ego or not, is a great musician and song writer. I can't wait for the album! not because it's "guns N' Roses" but because it's going to be a good album. Especially compared to what others release and call "classic" albums now-a-days. Bottom line, it looks to be a great album. Drop the grudges.

Ummm...Not impressed but then again I listen to Tool,So this was just a bunch of noise to me. I grew up listening to GNR and loved that it pissed my parents off but now this song is just pissing me off. Try again!

some of you need to realize that Axl WAS NOT SITTING IN A STUDIO FOR 15 YEARS WRITING THIS. Slash didnt officially leave until 96, then Axl went on recruiting. In 99 they wrote Oh My God and then spent almost a year re-recording Appetite for Destruction with the new band just to get the feel when they play it live. Axl also spent some time in China. They also toured in 2002 which took away from some writing. PLUS THERE ARE 30-40 SONGS RECORDED. So Chinese Democracy DID NOT take 15 years to write and record, its just a nice story angle to play up and an easy out for people who dont even want to give it a chance and hate it instantly.

It's great to hear Axl's voice again but I don't think that will be a song that will get stuck in my head like some of his previous music.

I think the track is pretty good. better than most crap i hear on radio now-a-days.
sure they have a hard time getting people to listen to this cuz everyone has their own agenda, and most people already decided they hated it before even listening. but i suppose that's something that remains constant in Gnr. back in the day it was the same. but at the end of the day they were extremely sucessful cuz their fan base was insane, and given the interest that this single has had, i suppose a lot of people still care.
if i remember correctly this encarnation of the band toured the world in 2006 and 2007 with sold out arenas a headlining huge festivals, so i'm pretty sure they'll do just fine. those who like the band will still pay to see it, and those who are bashing wouldn't buy the cd in the first place.

so everyone is free to think what they want about the material or the name guns n roses, but at the end of the day this is a great track and thank you Axl for giving back to the fans!

Axl still has his voice, but the back-up band stinks... Axl needs to drop the ego and realize that it was the entire band that made GnR.

Before I realized what was happening, I had become so confused that I didn't know what to think.
