First Look: Brad Pitt in Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds'

Oct 17, 2008, 08:27 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Film, Things That Are Awesome!

Bradpittbasterdsquentin_lHere's your first look at Brad Pitt in costume on the set of Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds. Pitt has the starring role in this remake of the Dirty Dozen-ish WWII adventure as Lt. Aldo Raine, known to the Germans as Aldo the Apache for his practice of scalping his victims. (Sounds like a combo of his Troy and Legends of the Fall characters.)

Show of hands: Who's as excited about this movie as we are?

UPDATE: Yes, "Inglourious Basterds" is Tarantino's spelling of the title in the current shooting script. He had spelled it correctly in previous incarnations of the screenplay, including the version EW reported on in July.

Seriously? Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 09:27 AM EST

Really? We have to put up with a link to Apaches (and Native Americans in general) to scalping? Why is it always okay to be racist when it comes to Native Americans? We're out here trying to raise our kids too and references to us as scalpers hurts our kids.

patrick Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 11:18 PM EST

i'm pretty sure tarantino know's how to spell "bastards", and i can bet he has a reason for spelling it the way he did.

Dr. Cleevis Muttsons Jr. III Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

Quentin Tarantino is creepy but not in a good way. His scarey movies are never scarey and easy to predict what will happen next. Brad Pitt seems like a nice person, helping build houses cet... but I don't care for seeing movies that he is in any longer. He needs to stop making movies & help his wife build that giant shoe for all those kids.

2Tees Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

It may seem petty to dwell on this but it might have been helpful/useful if in all his "research" he had also taken the time to spell things correctly. In the real world it isn't okay to write a paper full of grammar and spelling errors if you expect to get an award for the content. It makes the writer appear to be too lazy, arrogant or uneducated to be bothered to correct their mistakes and leaves a bad impression of their talent, ability, educational level and, indeed, content. Allowing such glaring errors to pass by sends the wrong message to our students - especially those who are struggling with basic English. Pretty soon we won't be able to understand each other at all and the dictionary will go unread because it's the size of a piano due to all the accepted errors and mis-applications.

Frances Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

When I first heard about this, I flipped out. Tarantino and Pitt working together = AWESOME!!! And to all the Tarantino haters out there, you need only watch one scene of Pulp Fiction to realize that you are watching a movie genius at work.

Spike Michaels Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

Say what you will, but there's no doubt that QT redefined moviemaking in the mid 90's, even establishing a new genre, "Tarantino-ish."
I think QT ROCKS, KILL BILL is AWESOME, GRINDHOUSE was killer, and I'm pumped about "Inglorious!"
Uh, by the way...I'm directing an indie film which should be out by 2010...it's a dark comedy called "DARLING KILL", about a geeky chick who joins the Mafia...watch for the MySpace page coming soon...

Joe Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

I don't know whats up with the QT haters who claim he's ripping off of every other director, but I guess that's inevitable whenever someone enjoys success. If you honestly can't see the creative genius behind movies like Kill Bill or Pulp Fiction, then maybe you should just stop going.

rufus1133 Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

1. Tarintino is a fraud. He seems like a good director to those with no knowledge of the history of filmaking. He is 5 other directors thrown together haphazardly. High school 14 year old boy day dreams. 2. This is not the time for this movie. Now is not the time to re-live ww2 battles, or euro vs jew. Now is the time to bring america together, and heal from the last 10 years. Their will always be those who seperate and divide america for money. Always. They used to be called traitors, now they are just called republcains.

carly Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

kind of sad that simon pegg will be unable to be in the movie due to previous conflicts...

Rich Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

I find it interesting when people say, "I've hated everything QT has ever done, so I'm not looking forward to this one." Odd that you should be paying attention at all. "The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference."

Rob Grizzly Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

Brad Pitt working with QT for the first time ought to be something to see

harry Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

I can not wait!!!

Nancy Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 11:21 PM EST

JON TAKE SOME LORAZAPAM!! Tarantino is a fabulously talented, slightly-deranged mind. It takes a person of uncertain sanity to be able to think of some of the fabulous sh-- that this director-writer has created. Tarantino is like an Edgar Allen Poe, creepy but completely mesmerizing in his work. I say BRAVO.....keep it coming....we can wait for more.

Riley Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Anything that Tarantino touches F***in Rocks!!! I can't wait to see it!

maxwell19596 Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

actually i'm not so sure about my news it was old and i can't seem to find any other mention of whether it is one or two films haha

amy Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

I am soooooo sick of Angie and Brad. Yuck! Just go away to France, please! And I agree with Jon, Tarantino is a fraud.

Yogi Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

Brad looks HOTT!!

maxwell19596 Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

This will be a good movie, and as usual most of these comments are negative. Quentin Tarantino makes cool movies, and this is no exception. here is why (thanks harry) The first big thing we learn is that Quentin has been writing almost non-stop on INGLORIOUS BASTARDS - and that the premise is the basic jumping off point from Enzo's original - that you had a bunch of hardened criminals on a military transport during World War II - that got ambushed by the Nazis. Everyone but the criminals gets killed and the prisoners decide to make their way to neutral Switzerland - and must fight the Nazis and the Allies to get there. It's a true No Man's Land scenario.
Well, as Quentin has been writing this - he's done so much research into the actual events of World War II as well as the cinema of World War 2 - that the story kept growing and growing. It became too big for one film - so he's turned it into 2. INGLORIOUS BASTARDS will be two movies." isnt that cool! 2 more awesome QT flicks

delo21 Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Kind of looking forward to it. Didnt like death proof to much. Burned out on his dialogue. He has to change his style a little bit it gets repetitive.

Anne Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Really looking forward to this film. Brad and his family are said by local sources to be enjoying their stay in Berlin.

Nathan Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Sounds like it's Jon's time of the month.

Adrian James Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

Having read the screenplay, this is indeed excellent. Possibly another Oscar shot for Tarantino.

Connie Farbelle Sun, Oct 19, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Gotta agree with Jon on this one

basterds is spelled this way b/c the media wont advertise it if it is spelled correctly. Just like how they wont advertise 'zach and mira make a porno' b/c of the porno phrase.

Josh Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

Tarantino has been working on this since before Kill Bill so I think it is going to be great. My favorite actor with one of my favorite directors. Awesome.

Bob Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

for some reason I am not looking forward to this.

Anitamargarita Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Plus he opens up the mainstream viewers to other movies they never would have ever watched in a million years. I was 15 when Pulp Fiction came out - and my parents were incredibly controlling over what I watched as a kid. I never would have in a million years ever watched a Bruce Lee movie if I hadn't first seen Kill Bill. Never. I was WAY too young for the B movies referenced in Grindhouse. MAYBE this will do the same for war movies.

Anitamargarita Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

Jon, chill out. You're not wrong - but his movies are still GOOD. Some people actually enjoy counting the parts and what they reference. We are fanboys ourselves, I guess.

Mike Litoris Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

Did it ever occur to you people that they purposely spelled it basterds?

Jon Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

Tarantino is a fraud. How long are people going to allow him to rip off movies he watched, cobble them together, and call them his own? He made one original movie -- his best -- "Pulp Fiction," but after that it's been nothing but other people's ideas thrown together into his own masturbatory fan-boy pastiche. He's nothing but a movie geek who's tricked people into thinking he's talented. So he takes every Japanese samurai movie he ever watched and cut and pastes it into a screenplay and the world goes wild. Now he takes every WWII movie he ever liked and uses a little tape and glue to make it into a three-hour film and they'll say he's reinventing the genre. He was also in love with Brain De Palma and he has truly become him -- boldly ripping off other filmmakers and somehow being called a genius. What an unbelievable scam.

Nick Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

Anything QT touches is GOLD. Sign me up.

http://www.thelittlestwinslow.wordpress.com

Joanne Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

as long as Brad is in it and he's enjoying himself at work....who the hell cares. when was the last time you enjoyed being on the job? I supposed he does miss the family filming so far away.

mamasandpapas Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

Have you guys ever watched the original? It SUUUUUUUCKs. I totally agree with Chris Nashawaty's review and always have hands down.

Sean Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:05 AM EST

Yes, im sure QT misspelled bastards by accident, because, you know, there aren't a hundred people looking at the spelling each and every day who didn't mention it to him or something.

Englureais Bustird Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

Spelling mistakes aside, I am most defintely NOT looking forward to this. QT hasn't done anything that wasn't ridiculously self-indulgent since, well, ever. Seeing him do a knock-off of a knock-off really isn't doing anything for me.

Jeff Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 02:31 AM EST

That is how QT is spelling it as of now.

HookedOnPhonics Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 01:13 AM EST

Did QT mis-spell it, or is Gary Sussman just having a little fun? I guess "basturds" would have been too obvious!

Sarah C Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 12:53 AM EST

Hmmm...did QT spell "Basterds" incorrectly on purpose?

Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 08:56 PM EST
