Drunk people in movies: Intoxicating or hilarious?

Oct 3, 2008, 03:48 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: Film, Food and Drink

Arigraynornicknorah_l_2 In keeping with today's odd confessional spirit, I'd like to openly admit that I hate really drunk people in movies. I'll eventually see Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist because I kind of have to, but the one thing holding me back is that really drunk girl (Kat Dennings' best friend in the movie, played by 25-year-old stage vet Ali Graynor) in the trailer. You know her. You've seen the commercial 10,000 times. She finds Jesus and he's much taller than she expected. People seem to find this line hysterical; I find it completely annoying. Maybe I'm just jealous because the closest thing to Jesus I've found late-night in New York is pizza. Anyway, Lisa Schwarzbaum raves about Graynor's performance in her A- review of Nick and Norah's, and my office buddies who've seen the film say the drunk girl's the best part of it. I'm hopeful that Graynor can convert me, but I'm still not swayed.

What about you? Drunk people in movies: Intoxicating or hilarious? Why can't everybody just get stoned?

I find drunk people in movies soooooooo annoying. its never funny

dma69 Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

Hands down the best drunk onscreen is Dudley Moore in Arthur. The sequel sucked, but the original is still hilarous.

Dan Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

If the really drunk person serves a purpose in the film, as Ari Graynor's character certainly does in Nick and Norah, then what's the problem? Drunk peopel usually = drama. And drama in movies is a good thing, otherwise, zzzzz. So get off your anti-drunk high horse, Annie Barrett.

Coyote Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

Val Kilmer ... "Tombstone" ... a daisy of a drunk!

monica Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 08:27 PM EST

ironically, i thought norah's drunk friend was HILARIOUS in the movie, but in real life, i hate drunk people. i hate the idea that nearly no one in new york can have a good time without a drink in their hand. plus so many bad things happen to a person when they're drunk...and the day after. drunk people just aren't funny in real life.

queen of disrepair Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

Funny drunks in movies usually aren't; tragic drunks in movies are too heartbreaking to watch. Watching "Drunk History" on Funnyordie.com is actually usually amusing - Jack Black makes a great Benjamin Franklin in this drunk historical retelling.

stalecake Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

Way more annoying than drunk people in the deadly-mistakes-played-for-laughs department is the total lack of condom use in movies. At least "Sarah Marshall" mentioned condoms a few times, but it's particularly noticable in Romantic Comedy movies, and Porn.

connie Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

Worst. Movie. Ever. I wouldn't see it again even if I was paid to!

If chewing gum that has fallen into a vomit filled toilet is your idea of funny you'll love it.

Don Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Really? You have nothing to write about so you write a 25 word essay on drunk people in movies? How does ew.com allow this? How do you have a job?

Dru Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 07:42 AM EST

Maybe Seth Rogen is drunk when he is making his films. That would explain why I don't find him funny at all.

But, let's remember Some Like It Hot. Marilyn Monroe was amazing in it, and both she and her charcter were drunk.

bruno Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 07:21 AM EST

i agree with WHATEVER annie says.

Clay Atlas Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 12:51 AM EST

Drunk people in movies are annoying. More annoying than telemarketers.

Brad Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

I went to see Nick and Norah and the girl in the drunk is actually the catalyst in the two of them staying together. Without her, they have no reason staying together and exploring their night. I don't want to give away details but this film really shows how that plot device keeps the movie moving forward.

Arthur-Dudley Moore-the comment about "hating Perry's wife", the scene when he is talking to his fiance's father, one of the funniest movies ever

Margaret Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

I'll agree that most of the time, the drunk people in movies and TV shows annoy me to no end. Mostly because they're acting like how they THINK drunk people act, and it's sooo over the top that it ends up being unbelievable. Methinks they'd be better off if they actually got drunk. I do have one exception, and that is Leslie Mann's character in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." She is freaking SPOT ON with that performance. Every moment she's on screen is absolutely brilliant and quotable. "Let's get some xxxxing French Toast!"

Badmannered Jackass Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

We need a topic discussing bad breath on television! My god, the other night one news reader was babbling on about economics and all I could smell was garlic and swamp smells coming from my screen! Some news readers are worse than others. They should all be forced to use mouth freshener before they go on air. Also, they should not be allowed to eat cabbage either - farts are the worst offenders - especially when they come in stereo.

Ha! I am fun at a party. Ask anyone.

We should figure out the 10 best and 10 worst drunk characters of all time. It really does depend on acting ability, Cara is right.

(But I agree with commenter "Stoned People" -- Anna Faris in Smiley Face beats any intoxicated person ever.)

THC_Electra Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

I can't stand when actors are "acting" drunk or stoned in movies. Drunk isn't as bad, but stoned is the worst. I understand you can't always be high or wasted on set for 12 hours while shooting your scenes, but humor me a little. Just take a quick toke or pack a little flask if you're to be acting intoxicated. Usually actors over-do it and take the stereotypes of being drunk/high overboard, creating cringe-worthy performances from even our most beloved actors.

Unknown Lady Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

What about Richard E. Grant in the cult classic "Withnail and I" He played a great drunk for someone that is a teetotaler. Classic Film....its a must see!!!

Bill B. Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

The greatest drunk performance in film history is probably Albert Finney in Under the Volcano. It's also one of the more unpleasant to watch performances in film history due to it's realism. There were rumors at the time that he was actually drunk while filming, which seems very possible if you've ever seen it, and that alone may have cost him the Oscar for the most devastating performance given that year. Mickey Rourke in Barfly and Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas are the next best two that come to mind and I dislike saying the latter as he is one of the most inconsistent performers currently working in film. He's usually awful, but every now and then he steps up to the plate and shocks us. As far as funny goes, there is not a drunken comedy performance ever that matches Dudley Moore in Arthur (though he has a wonderful drunk scene in 10 as well). He is drunk nearly throughout and gives one of the great comedy performances of all time. His performance is a comedy masterpiece.

funny Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

I love the scene in My Name Is Earl (the episode where roseanne guest stars) where Joy and Earl are drunkenly acting out in their recliners in their front yard. You have to see it to get it. It's great.
But ordinarily, I only hate when people in movies act really drunk, then seconds later, they're acting normal. Hello! Continuity!

anthony s. Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

drunk people and stoned people crack me up in movies... :)

nick and norah is a funny movie

shawn Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

I can't believe you were paid to write this

norm Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

I don't understand your post. You title your prose "Drunk people: Intoxicating or hilarious," i.e., two positive choices, yet you mildly rant about their presence in movies. Then towards the end of your bit, you reveal that you are not annoyed by drunk people in movies but by your "confession" that you have not "found Jesus," presumably while in a drunken state. Were you stoned when you wrote this?

Mary in Atlanta Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

Oh - and Philadelphia Story also has the single most believable hang-over scene.

Lars Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Um...Jessica Biel dancing drunk down the hallway in Rules of Attraction? Nothing wrong with that!

I'm drunk right now! Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

It's really annoying because I've never once seen an actor or actress give a performance where they actually seemed drunk. The way actors "act" drunk and the way drunk people actually act are totally different. It never fails to seem really, really phony, and it pulls me out of the world the movie has created in an instant.

K Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Mary in Atlanta, thanks for mentioning The Philadelphia Story -- that's top on my list of movies with great inebriated scenes. (Apparently Jimmy Stewart ad-libbed his hiccups, and they're simply brilliant.)

The point is, though, that if the drunk is merely a shallow attempt to get laughs without any effort put into writing a good scene that will genuinely forward the flick, of course it's dumb and annoying. And since so many movies these days are nothing but shallow, poorly written attempts at getting laughs, the drunks are as well.

o Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

getting drunk is still legal, Joe Six Pack running for office. yet weed, which doesnt turn us into road kill will get you that famous American forced sodomy we love to laugh about. laugh out loud - the cops are kicking down doors in Texas after running drug dogs through our neighborhoods. hilarious! but only for the holy-wood set.

Merton of the Movies Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

I'm with Ned about the Thin Man movies, but Ray Milland wasn't in them. HE was in the rather UNfunny drunk movie, The Lost Weekend. William Powell was the name Ned was after. Of course before those great flicks, there was the king of drunks, W.C. Fields.

And by the way, what's squirrelier than drunk in movies? Underage drunk in movies! For that, I'll go with Superbad.

Mary in Atlanta Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

Allow me to clarify: I am 42 and have no intention of seeing Nick and Nora.. (except the Thin Man version). It looks like a stupid kid movie. Yeah - that may make me sound old but when the kids are NOT around, here are some of my favorites - some which are not limited to pot and/or alcohol: AbFab (best ever addiction comedy), Bridget Jones, Philadelphia Story, Slapshot, Orange County, Tropic Thunder, oh and yes, the best line in Arthur is: "Doncha hate Perry's wife?"

Brie Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

I saw Nick and Norah last night, and I gotta say, Ali Graynor was one of the best parts of the movie. She was perfect in the role, playing drunk helpless friend to perfection.

(As a side note, the movie was really good, if not a little contrived. Definitely worth seeing)

Alex Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

My problem with seeing drunk people on screen is that it just reminds me of the times when I've been sober and had to take care of a drunk friend. Drunk people are usually only funny if you're drunk as well!
Actually my favorite drunk from the screen is Karen from "Will and Grace" precisely because she doesn't act in the stereotypical drunk way. She'll just make some comment about not being able to see straight or pull out a flask, which is funny.

Mary in ATL Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

Let's just admit it. Drunk USED to be funny, like when "we" were kids: Sixteen Candles, Animal House, Caddy Shack...

That was before camera phones, roofies, urban sprawl, the internet, increased litigation, smaller, lighter, faster cars AND the fact that some us now have kids who are old enough to drink.

So, stoned may not be quite as funny but its safer therefore its funnier by default.

Aaron Vlek Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 08:46 AM EST

I had my "come to Jesus" moment about portrayal of drunk/stoned behavior in films and TV when, after being complete "addicted" to the British comedy "Absolutely Fabulous" for years in its hey-day, I watched reruns recently, and found it very uncomfortable and sad, and ultimately pathetic. Why? Because as the earlier posted said, times have changed and we have all witnessed the results of prolonged drug and alcohol use, and perhaps even more sadly, the despertation and aimlessness in life that leads people down this path in the first place. Juxtapose "Ab-Fab's" Patsy and how hilarious she was in the '80s with Britney Spears et al today and you'll know what I mean.

Paul from Long Island, NY Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

Jackie Gleason on the Honeymooners when he and Norton get "drunk" drinking the grape juice Ralph's wife has substituted for the wine so they won't hurt themselves, and they still think they are drunk. A classic.

DMartin Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

I think tolerance for drunk comedy drops when you have had to deal with real ones on a frequent basis. While the audience is laughing at the actors' clever delusions, you're trying to think about when the character is going to puke. Probably the best of those scenes was the party scene in 10 Things I Hate About You; Kat drinks, loses control, makes a fool out of herself, hits her head, notices Verona's eyes for the first time, and pukes on his shoes. It doesn't get much better than that?

Spitfire Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

There seems to be a movement to bowdlerize life and, by extension, the way it's portrayed on film.

Although you have a right to dislike this kind of thing, it too much sounds like just one more Politically Correct admonition to invite a candid response.

Me, I hate to see advanced cadavers and string puppets, either in life or movies. I'm sure there is a connection there somewhere, but it sure ain't Political Correctness..!

Miss Prutence Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 07:24 AM EST

I'd like to say from my age and years of infinite wisdom and excruciating experience that it's not a good idea to promote the participation of alcohol consumption on the electric television due to the scientifically proven fact that Fred Astaire tap danced his way through Hollywood during the cold war when all the soldiers were taking cold showers together to try and get warm and their wives weren't very impressed when their performance rates began dropping as fast as the US economy. oh well. we might as well all kill ourselves and leave everything to charity!

Casey C Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 07:21 AM EST

Drunk people are way more fun than stoned people. Drunk people are much better for slapstick humor while stoned people always just look burned out and stupid.

Jack Reefer Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 07:07 AM EST

pfffffffffft...haaaaaa... coff! coff! man I've been stoned 24/7/365 and still counting. If everybody got stoned that would be disastrous - there wouldn't be enough pot left for me to smoke.

No, it goes all the way back to Ray Milland in The Thin Man, it's sssshlightful!!!

Patrick Neville Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 06:33 AM EST

The whole idea of the drunk person in movies is to either find them comedic, pathetic, or annoying. It is the exact definition of a "real" drunk person. So if you are annoyed with a character playing a drunk person in a movie, then both the director and actor for that part have done a tremendous job in the portrayal.

Bob Galvin Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 06:32 AM EST

Inebriation is a fact for most of us, sometimes in our lives. Funny in movies? I suppose it is the way it is done. When Dan Akroyd(sp)?, played the drunken Santa i "Trading Places" it was absolutely hilarious. I guess it depends on how its played, the movie scene and your own frame of mind at the time.

stilyagi Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 06:21 AM EST

I like complaining about inane things too!

When actors wear yellow clothes, OMG! That's the worst!

I think that Will Smith was pretty funny playing drunk in Hancock, he always plays the good guy and his acting as a nasty, rude and completely drunk character was amazing :)

RC Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 03:41 AM EST

I see drunk people on the streets, in cars, on buses, in bars, etc., every day. Why should it bother me to see someone drunk in the movies?

As for funny drunks, the drunk act as it was called, is as old as the hills, and often times it's very funny. Doesn't mean you have to like it. There's many other kinds of comedy, and some of it is much more controversial (and to some people, off putting) than drunkenness.

Stoned People Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 03:24 AM EST

Anna Farris was a great stoner in Smiley Face. She would have killed in this role.

My ex husband Fred did a lot of swilling, belching and farting but you never saw that on the television. And if you think being drunk on television is bad - watch someone tripping over in a huge pile of Dino dropping and that might give you cause to complain.

William Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 02:21 AM EST

I hate drunk people going to see the movies. At least on the screen they are controlled, in the cinemas - they're belching and farting loud pigs. Oink!

sfhndymn Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 02:08 AM EST

I have no problem with reasonable alcohol and drug use. I'm not usually put off by drunk characters. Sometimes it will bother me when it seems harmful or sad, but isn't intended to be that way. I felt vindicated somewhat by your confession. I had a similar reaction to the original! "Nick and Nora" movies - the "Thin Man" series from the 30's and 40's. I was on a committee running a film festival fund raiser. We showed old films in historic theaters. That year, the committee wanted to show a "Thin Man" movie for our Comedy night. I said that I recognized the appeal but I was put off by the constant drinking. The characters in the Thin Man movies seemed to always have a cocktail in their hand, and were at least a little bit buzzed all the time. Everything that happened good, or bad, called for cocktails. Maybe I was thinking more about the characters inspiring real folks to live like their idols. I got blank stares all around the table. I can't remember what we finally picked.

marc Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 12:56 AM EST

My first point is that she really is funny. I have seen movies that have drunks just to have drunks and she actually contributes a lot to this movie. My second being they made a movie people relate to. The whole plot is about a bunch of kids who go out to a bunch of bars in search of a band. A bunch of kids going out pretty much always results in at least one drunk. She could have been annoying, but I thought the movie was really a lot better because of her contribution.
Any movie that is solely about seeing who can be the most belligerent is annoying, but sometimes the drunk person really is the highlight of the night. Give this one a chance

Will smith was good at being high in hitch. Funny.

Sina Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:50 PM EST

It just depends on who is playing the drunk and if they can act or not. Ingrid Bergman in Norotious was a good drunk. In the Dairy of Bridget Jones, Rene Z was a good drunk. Brad Pitt in True Romance was a good stoner. Not everyone can do it. People who play drunk on tv are the horrible ones. They overact like crazy especially on soaps.

Jen80 Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST

Well, Annie B., I feel the same way about stoned characters as you do about drunk ones. I just. don't. think. it's. funny. The humor lasts about, mmm, 3 minutes before I'm so annoyed by these people who think being that irretrievably stupid is amazingly funny. Um, no. Eh, to each his own, I suppose.

aps Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

I usually find drunkenness pretty bad in movies. sometimes it's alright. I actually find people who are stoned to be worse though. I think it's stupider and less funny.

noogie Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:17 PM EST

I vote for Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire. Perpetual drunks are bores at best, but characters who get drunk now and then can reveal a bit about themselves.

Cara Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

It really depends--I've always said that drunk scenes are the ultimate test of acting ability. If you're not good, the drunk scene will out you as such. You will crash and burn. If you are a good actor, however, you will make it through the drunk scene with flying colors.
Probably what's thrown you on cinema drunks in general, Annie, is that most people unfortunately aren't good enough to pull them off.

Em Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

I usually don't like drunk characters- there are very few exceptions. I just find the characters annoying!

Josh Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

Best Drunk performance... Oliver Platt in The Ice Harvest. He starts out at hammered, and gets progressively worse as the night goes on. HILARIOUS!!!

Nina Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

I think most "drunk" performances in movies are terrible, unrelated to actual drunkenness and thoroughly unfunny. That said, Dudley Moore was great in Arthur. He is the exception to the rule I guess.

Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

No, I'm totally with you. The drunk Nick & Norah girl bugs the hell out of me and makes me not want to see it. (I'm also not a huge fan of those "crazy night where one thing after another goes wrong" movies, so that's a factor too)

thad Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 04:59 PM EST

Dudley Moore in Arthur, hilarious. Can't Hardly Wait, hilarious, 16 Candles, hilarious!

GeeMoney Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

Drunk people in movies has been getting old (due to the same old schtick), except for in the 40 Year Old Virgin... that drunk driving scene with Leslie Mann and Steve Carell was HILARIOUS!

Winona Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

Drunk people are only very mildly amusing (read: just barely on the cusp of annoying) when the viewer of said drunk people are drunk themselves.

Arsenio Billingham Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

Wow, Annie B. admitting to having plumbing problems, AND tacitly admitting a preference for light drug use, all in the same day? Is it a full moon or something?

Snarf Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Because drugs are bad, mmmm-kay?
