Winner of the Week: Jon Hamm

Oct 24, 2008, 05:32 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: Now That's What I Call a Face!, Sexytimes, Television, Winner of the Week

Jonhamm_l Yes, I suppose it's a bit preemptive to declare sexy beast Jon Hamm Winner of the Week until after he hosts Saturday Night Live -- and after Sunday night's season 2 finale of Mad Men. But it's not like Don Draper would hesitate to do something totally irrational and yet bizarrely appropriate -- the guy's still out in California (pictured, lovin' it) avoiding the "Mad" part of his life and pretending he's Edna Pontellier in The Awakening by symbolically enveloping himself in the open sea. Heeeeey, look who graduated high school English! This girl.

Despite Mad Men's Emmy win for Best Drama and Jon Hamm's Best Actor Golden Globe, it's still a show watched by only about 1.5 million people each week (not counting DVR viewership and iTunes downloads). But its ever-increasing visibility seems promising. Hamm's SNL gig should attract a larger audience for season 3, and exposure on other shows like Jeopardy! (this past week) and The Simpsons' annual "Treehouse of Horror" trilogy (airing Nov. 2) can't hurt. I'm sure people who have no clue why Homer will be shown free-falling past images of Springfield (to mimic Mad Men's gorgeous opening credits) will immediately "Google that up" (as my Mad Men-loving mom would say), then immediately watch both entire seasons on DVD. Yeah!

Cheers [clink] to that big, juicy, mouth-watering slab of Hamm.

The spoofs on SNL were hilarious (except for the appearance by "the a-holes"), and the Simpson's spoof of the opening credits was so funny I almost spit out my gimlet!

robin Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 08:40 PM EST

Good choice! I had no idea who Jon Hamm was before SNL, but as soon as it was over, I set my tivo to record the Mad Man finale. I was easily won over!

Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 05:30 PM EST

I wish he would have hosted at the beginning of the MM season. It was a wasted opportunity for new viewers. Hopefully, people will get the dvds and tune in for S3. He did a great job on SNL. I must say though, Vincent Kartheiser is my favorite and deserves more recognition. He's fantastic as Pete.

Natalie Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

I've never watched Mad Men, but have been curious about it. After watching SNL and hearing his sexy voice I tivo'd the finale last night.

steve Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Jon Ham = Funny

HadasBT Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 10:50 PM EST

I heart Mad Men!

Julia Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

Last night's SNL was a HOOT. I adored Don Draper's Guide to Picking Up Women and the Vincent Price skit. Jon Hamm did a phenomenal job, I think he should be a regular whenever Mad Men isn't filming.

In other news, he is smoking hot.

Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

What's with that comb-over he has? And Saturday Night Live was so non-funny last night!!

kikay Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 06:43 PM EST

Jon Hamm was excellent on SNL! He is the only reason I watched the whole episode (i usually fall asleep after the first 30 min). I have also followed Mad Men since day1 and I must say that more people should be watching this amazing, captivating drama. Hamm portrays Don Draper perfectly. Just lovvvve him! Swoon!!!

mk Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

He is just mesmerizing. One of the sexiest men ever.

lana Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

Mouth-watering slab of Hamm, indeed.
Loved how his range was tested last night. What else has he been in besides the most wonderful Mad Men?

Janna Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

Jon Hamm was an awesome host! Especially noticeable after so many clunkers lately. He had a great range and was so charming and genuine. I loved that referenced Mad Men so many times, too!

Agatha's Crusty Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

He was GRRRRRRRREAT.

Trazey Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

I love MM and it was great to see Jon Hamm actually LAUGH and smile LOL he was great !! His James Mason was spot on, and his endorsement of Jon Hamm's John Ham cracked me up! hhhaha And it was so fun to see Peggy & Sterling show up for the skit, Peggy was hilarious.... "What time is it?" Peggy says "oh i'm just a woman, I'm not allowed to own a watch" hahahha

Kathleen Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 12:02 AM EST

oh one more thing - finally our generation has a Cary Grant type! By that I mean, seriously talented, handsome and able to play funny as well as drama...

Kathleen Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 12:01 AM EST

oops - sexy - jon hamm not sezy.... ok - friends don't let friends drink white wine and blog...

Kathleen Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

Brillaint performance by the sezy uber-male Jon Hamm! Funny, funny and the most amazing James Mason impression - made me google James Mason for audio - unbelievably funny! I love Mad Men but Jon Hamm stands alone as a real talent! and he ain't hard to look at!

Liz Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

They don't make men like this anymore. Even my fiance condones my rapacious crush on him. I also Jennifer Westfeldt, his longtime partner. "Kissing Jessica Stein" was a good movie!

donner Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

I just finished watching Season 1 of MM and am jonesing for Season 2...plus - our local Austin NBC affiliate is fueding with Time-Warner and they've dropped the signal, so I have no NBC feed and cant watch the SNL ep tonight...i envy you all...sigh...

maureen Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 12:03 PM EST

I've never been more excited to watch saturday night live than tonight. Why wasn't there one commercial promoting it though?

KateDFW Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Seriously, is there anybody out there that is hotter than Jon Hamm? I will be watching SNL tonight (for him alone) and will be glued to the set for the Mad Men season finale. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us after last week's amazing episode!

Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Jon Hamm is just so handsome... It's just not fair... I'm so excited for the finale though!

Jo Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 08:21 AM EST

It's an understatement to say how much I love Jon Hamm he's so hot it's ridiculous as for Mad Men it's clearly the best how on tv.

Sina Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 12:51 AM EST

I can't believe that guy use to be a high school teacher! Gawd I wish I had attended that school.

I just started watching Mad Men when AMC had a marathon running earlier this year. I got season 1 from netflix. Love this show. I also love how Don looks at people like they have spinach stuck in their teeth.

Judy Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

I'm proud to say that I am one of those people you speak of who have recently discovered Mad Men due to outside exposure. It's fascinating, and I hope it catches on with everyone else like it did with me!

Devin Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

Well-done "Awakening" reference!

meg Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

Best. Choice. Ever. It's just wrong that he isn't Brad Pitt famous. Can't wait for SNL (he seems really funny in all of the interviews I've seen) and I can't wait for the Mad Men finale.

Rebekah Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

I agree with this choice 100%. Mad Men is an amazing show and should have much higher ratings. I can't think of another show that I look forward to more each week. This weekend will be doubly great with Jon Hamm both Saturday and Sunday. I am sure this Sunday's season finally will be unbelievable as the show always it. BTW, I think only season one is on DVD.

cpreynolds Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

Thanks for the nice ending to my workweek, Annie!
