Jeff Probst blogs 'Survivor: Gabon' (episode 3)

Oct 3, 2008, 12:45 AM | by Jeff Probst

Categories: 'Survivor', Reality TV, Television, Things That Are Awesome!

Survivorgabon_l When it comes to what is good for the show, as producers, we obviously look at it much differently than the Survivors. One of our biggest concerns is hanging onto our best “characters” for as long as possible. That is ultimately what keeps you, our loyal audience, interested. (Side note: Last week, a new study was released that surveyed audience loyalty relating to their favorite television shows. The number one show…the show with the highest viewer loyalty…of every show on television, was Survivor. Seventeen seasons and you are still with us. Thank you for keeping us on the air!) We now resume our regularly scheduled blog…

Unfortunately, we can’t tell the Survivors who to vote for, so all we can do is cross our fingers and hope for the best. After three episodes of Survivor: Gabon, we’re very happy on that front.

First we lost Michelle, then Gillian, and now Paloma. Whew. Relief. Three people who will not be missed. I say that with all due respect to the aforementioned, although, as my buddy Lopez reminds me, whenever you say “with all due respect” you’re actually saying without any respect at all. Yes, I am aware that if I keep up this lippy attitude for the entire season that I may end up buried to my neck in sand at the live reunion show. The problem is I write these in the afternoon, typically when I’m most hungry and therefore a bit cranky. Not an excuse, just a fact.

G.C. continues to disappoint…himself. The reward challenge, which was called “Kicking and Screaming,” is one of my favorites, but watching G.C. give up was even more dramatic. His tribe was screaming at him to kick it into high gear. Granted, they are living on extremely small rations of rice, so energy is in short supply, but Matty and Dan certainly had energy and they’re living on the same rice. In fact, can I just be candid? I don’t think it’s the end result as much as the lack of effort that frustrates his tribe. G.C.’s heart just doesn’t seem to be into it. I’m sure he is wondering if he should have given more effort. What continues to amaze me is the impact this game has on the human psyche. Or vice versa. I can’t be sure which is right. Dalton?

Sugar goes to Exile Island and we learn a bit more about who she is and what drives her. She’s clearly still mourning the loss of her father, who seems to be providing beautiful inspiration. She finds the hidden immunity idol with very little difficulty. Dan, who was probably with friends last night watching this episode, must have taken a ration of it from his buddies. She found the idol in twenty minutes, dude!! She smoked you! Ah, Sugar…I told you, I think you’re gonna root for her.

The immunity challenge provided at least one bit of excitement -- bikinis! It’s just not Survivor if, at some point, the women are not in bikinis. Am I wrong? Is that sexist? I’m just saying what people on the street tell me. Just keepin’ it reeeel dawg. Why you gotta bring me down? I don’t believe you critics anyway. I think you like it.

Time for another question: “At this early stage of the game, who are you pulling for?” Since EW isn’t giving me a space for comments, even though I take time out of my extremely hectic and oh-so-important life to write this column, go to Dalton’s column and post your answer! [Editor's note: We would never deny Jeff his due comment space, so feel free to post your thoughts below. In fact, we insist!]

So, Fang has turned things around with back-to-back wins. Trust me, Marcus is not happy. He’s a doctor. Did you know that? He just lost to a tribe of misfits, many of whom do not even have college degrees! No way! Kota now going to feel the after effect of having to vote someone out. It’s not so fun anymore. Kelly is on the outs for voting against Ace. What will she do? Come on Kelly. Think. What would Lindsay do? Kota needs to get it back together.

Next week has a nice little twist conceived by our resident switch expert, Dan Munday. I love it when we come up with something new that catches them off guard. It’s so hard to do that anymore, so when it happens we celebrate. We really do. We go back to base camp, pop a bottle of champagne, and slap each other on the backs. I’m kidding. There is no hitting on Survivor.

For EW and Dalton Ross,

Poppa J.

You say Sugar mentions her father she misses.. I thought it was her brother she's referred to as deceased(????)

Anyway, love the show, this season is the first that's ever had this middle aged woman literally jumping out of my chair, clapping and screaming and all due to Sugar's unexpected vote, then another, then another.. because of her we've had some huge surprises and I love it.. She by herself has shaken up this game, whether she meant to or not, and even if it was through the manipulation of others.. I've never screamed and clapped so hard in my life watching an episode-

Your blog entries are fine. Don't worry about it.. being politically correct isn't human. Speak your opinion, as long as it doesn't interfere with the integrity of the game and show..

maybe try a theme season, eh??? like all teachers, all scientists, all gymnasts, all middle aged women, all preppy spoiled pricks.. or something.. let's try a themed season!!

Jeff, while I am enjoying your blog, your hosting this season is completing turning me off from a show I've seen every episode of. Please remember you are supposed to be the neutral host. This season you have put yourself into the show so much you are impacting the behavior of the contestants. It's not Survivor: Jeff Probst, it's Survivor: Gabon.

Dionna Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 09:17 PM EST

I just found your blog. It will be fun to revisit.
I'm rooting for Bob so far although I'm still discovering all their personalities. Usually the nice people (my favorites) get voted off early and then I'm in a quandary as to who to root for.

J.R. Wed, Oct 8, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

How can you say Paloma will not be missed. She was hilarious. She looks sweet and cute, but she clearly has a vicious streak. In fact, I was sorry to see all three of the people voted off go - they all had more personality that you usually see on this show.

bettyoops Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

I had hopes that GC would be a better player, based on his background and initial appearance, but he's letting his attitude get in the way. I've liked Sugar from the beginning; I'd like to see her win. Ace doesn't rub me the wrong way as he seems to do so many others but I was surprised at how strong a player he seemed in the competition this time. Pretty amazing. Dan gives me the impression of being very emotionally precarious...sometimes he looks as though he's ready to cry; a real nice guy though. I don't like Randy's attitude but he'll be a fun player and I have a suspicion he's even going to turn into a pretty nice guy.

I think that the real alliance in Kota is Marcus and Ace...something about the interplay between them at tribal council. I hope Charlie doesn't get hurt in this if I'm right.

Great show..... one of my two favorites (LOST being the other). You do a great job too, Jeff and congrats on the emmy; well-deserved.

kathy Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

jeff...........you are the reason i keep watching....just want to dive right into those dimples!!!!!!

You really need to get this guy on Survivor.

bob Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

Jeff, keep up the good work. The twist and turns is part of Survivor. That is why it's still on. The viewers of Survivor prove that loyality to the show will keep it on the air. Survivor still has what it takes to kick butt and take names since reality shows started with Survivor I.

a.e. Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 07:50 PM EST

Jesus, Jeff. This is two weeks in a row now. Did Marcus steal your girlfriend or something? Lay off.

Molly S. Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

rerun, did you go to kelly's language school??? in other words, what??? your response is senseless

kimb Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Jeff-why is it that contestants will wear dresses and suits to be dropped off at their locations-do they not know that it is coming? I can't understand why they wouldn't dress in layers, etc. Luv Ya!!

Rerun Van Pelt Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 03:08 AM EST

The question is, Molly, how can you not? If I wasn't, I would be like a fish out of water. You may think the real problem is that you would drown, but I say that you should be a fish.

Molly S. Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 09:55 PM EST

how can y'all breath with your noses so far up jeff's butt?????

TorontoTom Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

JEFF IN A SPEEDO would've really made that a challenge to remember! In fact, how 'bout Jeff in a Speedo (and NO blurring allowed...) at Tribal Council as well?

Carol Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

I love Jeff -- you are an integral part of the show's success. Congrats on the Emmy. Here is my first question: Why does Amazing Race keep getting the Emmy? I have not missed one episode of Survivor or AR, and I just do not get it. Survivor excels in every way possible.
Here is my second question: WHY do women persist in wearing dresses to any event to do with Survivor in which they may be taken to location? It makes them look idiotic, especially when they are track stars.

Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Jeff, you are great! One of the key reasons for Survivor's success. I wish you could moderate some of the presidential debates. You would press for answers and not put up with their avoiding the issues. (It would also be fun to see you put them through a couple of challenges. REALLY get to know the candidates.)

Sean's Mom Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Jeff, congrats on the Emmy- well deserved. My son, who is now 12, and I have been watching since season 3, and rented tapes of the other 2 seasons to catch up. One of the big thrills of his life was when my friend's husband met Rupert and had him leave a phone message for Sean. I also live one town over from Boston Rob's hometown.

GC is reminding me of 'Osten from Boston'- another embarrassing Massachusetts Survivor who shamed himself by quitting. With GC's rocky past, you'd think he'd want to 'be all that he can be'- guess not. I'd like to think GC proves himself later on in the game but I doubt it.

As for 'The Lawyer', like many in his trade, he's powerless without the suit and the briefcase.

And you're right- I AM starting to like Sugar!

Thanks for the blog!

Dr. Probst Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

Hey, that study had Survivor on the list TWICE! If they had somehow, I don't know, combined that "loyalty" for Micronesia and China, Survivor would have won by even more!!! Also, why isn't Lost on that list? Survivor and Lost are my two most loyally followed shows. And they're both involve Exile Islands... and the list goes on.

survivor addict Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

From all the post blogs it appears that they really don't have a choice in what to wear, the producers decide.see below. I'm also tired of the clothes on their back twist. Best 2 seasons ever (1 and 2) did extremely well without it and still plenty of eye candy in bikinis that at least held up to a challange. Now it's all over the iternet that Marcus' was hanging out of his boxers while running in the (pun intended) ball challange. The producers didn't catch it to put there little (pun intended) blur there.

Lindsay Who? Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

Uh, who's Lindsay?

much_mischief Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

bikinis aside...what is up with the women wearing boxer briefs?...were they supllied by the crew after the women found themselves on day 1 of survivor wearing a dress? it buggles my mind that some women show up wearing a dress...this is not practical!

Marie Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

Sugar is annoying. She stated that she was scouted by CBS to be on one of their shows (naming Greatest American Dog as one). Whatever happened to trying out for the show??

As for the chicks in bikinis comment... If you're going for the lowest common denominator, well, heck, why bother with clothes at all? I can see a show desperate for ratings doing that, but this is Survivor. And like the other poster said, this is supposed to be a family show.

Julie Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 08:04 AM EST

Sexist? Absolutely! We have a "Survivor Watching Party" here every Thursday night, and even commented on the fact Night #1 "No swimsuits. Yeah!!" and then here came last Thursday night and the bikinis... what a tilt!! I am SICK of having to watch half a season with my kids and having many of the cracks in the women's buttocks have to be screened out because the bikinis don't even FIT correctly!! Enough is ENOUGH!! This is suppose to be a family show which airs at 8:00 for goodness sakes! Can't you even keep the SEX at a minimum for those of us with kids who are trying to watch a decent show!?!? Come on, Jeff, give us a break!

GoddessLu Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 05:54 AM EST

Hey Jeff, thanks for blogging--your perspective (albeit post view) is unique. I LOL whenever I see another lawyer on the show. I've worked for attorneys for many years & while they should be able to read people better than most, they inevitably crash & burn quickly. Plus I think where sometimes they arrive at conclusions through circuitous means, they have difficult seeing what's right in front of them. Add to that the target they have when others realize there's a lawyer in their midst & it's a wonder any of them still apply. Sugar rocks--I love how she's taking the consensus's underestimation of her & using it wisely. Sugar, Ken & Ace I hope make it to final three. Lastly I am a viewer since SEason 1 and yes, we ARE loyal--it's still a great show!

Martin Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 03:27 AM EST

Definitely rooting for Sugar, she's witty, sweet and seemingly a good player too.

And also in the love to hate category I've got to stick with Ace, the guy is just so arrogant that it's funny to watch.

Franklin Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 01:22 AM EST

I'm rooting for Fang in general and specifically Randy. How can you not love that ragtag bunch of misfits and the most offbeat and hilarious member of said tribe? Not to mention that Randy knows what he's doing out there. He happened to fall into the perfect situation for his type of strategy, but luck is part of this game.
Gabon is RANDYLAND!

Miss M Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

I pick Ace for a lot of different reasons; love the accent, he's a smart player, and he's hot! I also really like Bob (reminds me of my little Yauman) and Sugar is awesome. LOVE your blogs Jeff. Love having your insight into my fav reality show. Insight into one of your biggest Survivor fans: I have watched the All Stars Season 4 times cuz I NEVER get tired of watching Boston Rob screw over, lie to and manipulate everyone! And I hated the fact that Parvati won Fans vs. Favs.

rebecca Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 12:58 AM EST

I just adore Survivor and tune in faithfully each and every week. This comment isn't so much about Gabon, but the idea of "exile island" in general. I would love, love, love to see exile island taken even further to shake up the game. Maybe someone goes to exile island and the game ends for them right then and there, period. Or maybe, they get an extra vote at tribal? Keeping the tribes guessing what would be found at exile rather then letting them get used to a pattern there would be super fun to watch!!!

MikeknaJ Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:53 PM EST

Probst is blogging??? I Love It!!

prplrose5 Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

Oh, Jeff, I adore you! You're what makes Survivor great. It just wouldn't be the same without you. Congrats on the Emmy. You deserve it. I really like Sugar after last night. How great is it that a pin-up model found the Idol when a lawyer couldn't? I also like Bob and Matty. GC needs to go. He's pathetic and annoying.

Meri Kell Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:23 PM EST

First, big congratulations on you Emmy win, Jeff. Well deserved!

Second, I'm one of those loyal Survivor fans, and I'm really enjoying your blog (as well as Dalton's behind the scene's videos). Can't seem to get enough behind the scenes Survivor info to satisfy my curiosity.

At this point, I can't say I'm really rooting for anyone, though Marcus or Matty are probably my top picks for now. But Randy and Ace have stolen the show with their comments.

Finally, thanks again for many years of great entertainment!

wizkid Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

At this point im rooting For Marcus of Kota and Matty of Fang, I think they both deserve it cuz they can do the physical stuff and aren't backstabbing idiots to everyone

thevisitor967 Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

At this point I'm rooting for Dan, Matty and Ken. Why? Because even though their tribe lost the first 4 challenges, they're still trying to win. They haven't lost their spirit or will power. Dan, Matty and Ken are the main reason why Fang won the back-to-back challenges last nite. As you can see I prefer the underdogs (Fang) over the arrogant, Kota tribe. I'll tell you who I don't want to win at this point: Marcus, Charlie and Ace. I wouldn't mind if Sugar won though.

Peter Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

Jeff on G.C.: "What continues to amaze me is the impact this game has on the human psyche."

What I've noticed is that the people who begin the game believing that they have an advantage based on their own life experience usually don't cut it for very long. Clearly it's about adapting quickly and coping with adversity, while keeping an even temper, that gets most people to the mid-point of the series.

survivor addict Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 07:34 PM EST

Sexist..borderline. I for one am tired of the clothes on their backs twist and don't mind if the girls are in bikinis or guys in swim trunks. I do mind when then guys are out there in their flimsy boxers or the women are out there in underwear that are falling off of them. The most succesful seasons were in the beginning when they had the luxury of decent clothing to at least wear in the challanges. Jeff, I'm sure you can afford a trip anywhere in the world to see half or fully naked women but I don't think I need to be subjected to it every season..I think it's wrong to say the clothes on their backs and then the producers get to pick what clothes are on their backs. By no means am I a prude but I think a lot of the time they are more concerned about their clothes falling off in a challange and really can't do the best they can with that in mind.

Sawadee Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

I was rocked about Paloma's bio. Here was someone who'd lived in Kenya, grew up overseas, played cards for cash, etc. etc. But she seemed quite mild. I wondered if her background helped her in ways we didn't see.

Rerun Van Pelt Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

I highly doubt that my Adonis, Emmy-winning host Jeff Probst, will ever read the comments, at least not this far down. Still, I post.

Emmy-winning host Jeff Probst and his producers are not the only ones who watch in terms of characters. I will root for someone who rubs me the wrong way for that very reason. As long as someone is loved or hated, they need to stick around because they are contributing to the show and viewers make an investment in how well they do. My point of divergence from Probst is that I have not been overly thrilled with any of the voting results thus far. I tried explaining my reasons why but I reached the posting limit before that happened. I suppose I could make multiple posts, but I'll just shut up after this one. So let me end by saying that Paloma was my favorite! I loved what she wanted to use the money for, and she's a nice smiley girl with some spunk to balance things out.

I cannot wait to see how this "new" twist works, with valuing tribe members!

Marcus Dixon Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

Jeff, I want to have a beer with you.

Ann Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

*coughcough*cometocanada*coughcough*

We do have bikinis here too, you know.

Lindsay Rose Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

At this point I am rooting for Randy and Bob. Randy because he is so sarcastic, blunt, and realistic. Bob, because he is creative, hard-working, and he can turn his buff into a bow-tie. And I like Sugar as a person, I just don't like her alliance with Ace (who I sort of despise - fake accent and all). I hope to see GC voted out soon (I hate quitters on Survivor) and hope to see Ace get blindsided - because who doesn't love a good blindside? And even as a woman, I have to agree that the women looked great in their bikinis. But I really enjoy watching Marcus fish in his boxer shorts. ;-)

J Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

I heart Bob. I almost always cheer for the older gents.

CndnBrook Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

If not Bob, then definitely Sugar. She's smart but maybe a bit naive, I wish she didn't trust Ace so much. We shall see...

CndnBrook Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

Yeaaa for Jeff's own comment space! Thanks EW. Love your blog Jeff, and I love you even more on Survivor. I've been watching since the very first episode and you just keep getting better and better. I think we're in for a great season. Go Bob!!

Pete Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

I think the comment about women in bikinis is only sexist because you don't give the men bikinis to wear!

Michelle Fontagneres Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Jeff! I LOVE YOU!!! I have not missed an episode since this show premiered right after the superbowl...I'm hooked!! I work with my Dad and every Friday morning we have Survivor chat for the first hour, or so, of the day. You crack me up with these blogs...LOVE THEM!!!

Pete Isenberg Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

Jeff, thanks for your candor and insight into this blog, makes for great reading. Convinces even further that we'll have a blast when we meet on S19.

Who do I like? Love the people who know what they're doing and aren't afraid (at least in their confessionals) to let it hang out [apologies to Marcus].

I love Randy, you've gotta appreciate how well he recognizes the level of excellence on Fang. Corinne is the perfect ally, the person I would most likely want on my side. Sharp, and running the game at this point (yet ripe for picking off an an opportune moment).

A few of these people are delightfully annoying: Ace, GC, and Sugar top the list for me. They make for great TV. Of course there are still quite a few invisible people.

Despite his notable failure last night, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that Bob is my wife in a man-suit (she's from NH). We busted up laughing the first episode.

Very good casting compared to a few seasons ago. Kudos to the whole crew.

Just little ol me Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

Jeff, you are amazing. I look forward to your blogs moreso than the regular TV watch.
I am a hugh fan of Sugar right now, although I was disappointed when she told Ace she found the idol. DON'T TELL ANYONE...Duh.

Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

love the show :)

LB Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

J Piddy ... love your comments and you were right last week about Sugar but the crying is not annoying at all, endearing I'd say. Please someone kill GC he's a big suck bag.

Colleen Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

Another Great Blog Jeff! Thanks for writing this for us every week. I thought last nights episode was great!

JMJ Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

First off, I love that Probst is blogging. I'm a huge Survivor fan and this brings a little more perspective to the show. Thanks Jeff.

As for my favourites, I've got to say that I love Physics Bob the most. Especially because he turned his buff into a bow-tie. He's just awesome. Sugart*ts is great, too (hey, if Mel Gibson can get away with saying it, why can't I?). Ace gets on my nerves, but my girlfriend likes him, and I also adore Ken the video-game guy because he just seems very real and very smart. GC has got to go, though. He's annoying, lazy, and ignorant in his opinions. Which reminds me, I hope Randy stays around for a while, too, because he's funny and sardonic.

SS Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

I´m a bit torn about this blog and Jeff´s candidness. It´s good not to sugarcoat things and to be honest about the huge impact of the editing/production element and how it skews the ´reality´part of ´reality tv´into something fun for the viewers. Which in itself is valid. However, Jeff asks if he is sexist in wanting to have girls in bikini ? Maybe, maybe not. However, I have to disapprove of the casting of women only for that purpose, especially when the editing does not allow their personality to be portrayed at all and then when they are voted out early, they ´will not be missed at all´as Jeff says. I think that is rather disrespectful towards these women and honestly I have seen this theme recurring in Survivor history. The young men get a lot of personality development, however interesting they may or may not seem, while the women stay very quiet and are deemed boring. If that is a true reflection of how they were then there is a casting problem. If not it is biased editing.

Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

To eliminate any concerns of sexism, when the women get in bikinis, put the men in speedos. It's only fair!!!

Eolra Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

I am LOVING that Jeff has a blog this year. I'm using it as a secret weapon for the Survivor Pool going on in my kitchen (hmmmm...young female chef; sounds like an interesting new Survivor contestant - I can dream can't I? ). Now if I could only stop getting distracted by Jeff's sexy sexy dimples and concentrate on the game! After watching all the EW interviews I am rooting for Charlie and Jackque. G.C.'s pre-show interview really turned me off - as soon as he mentioned wanting to get on MTV for his music career I was like, "No, No No". Random: Ace has the ugliest tattoos ever.

liz Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

contestants will come and go, but we always have Jeff...love you!

Jon Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

Jeff busting out the honesty! Alright! I'm definitely pulling for Sugar, because she's cute as hell and watching her tear up about her father broke my cynical heart. She might be the first person to fly under the radar till the finals that I actually want there. GC is a joke. He doesn't even try. This has been the flaw of the last few seasons: bad casting. GC is completely lazy. He shouldn't even be there.

Sarah Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

I have to say I'm rooting for Crystal simply because she's a track star. Gotta stay true to my sport.

Aaron Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

Ideal final 3 would be Bob, Sugar, and Randy.

Donna Terry Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

I liked Sugar from the start. But I love Jeff. He is the main reason I have always watched this show. God Bless all of yall.

Lynn in AZ Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Jeff, you keep writing EXACTLY what we are all thinking, and I may just end up reading your blog & skipping the show - bad for CBS, great for time crunched me! SPOT ON, my man!

Miss Sugar Booger bugs me, yet Sugar is smart - therefore, we all love Sugar. G.C. tries to be hip, yet G.C. bugs me, therefore we do not love G.C. Michelle, Gillian & Paloma were blips on the rader (and all three had tics that drove me bonkers - M=whiney, G=accent from where? and P=mean as a cornered cat!) so buh-bye.

How do you keep a straight face in front of these doo-dahs every week, my brother?? I'd be telling them off, slowly and savoring it...and laughing my way to the bank, with my shiny, pretty new Emmy in hand!
Love you, Jeff. Never, EVER leave my show. I LIVE for Thursdays!!

Brigitte Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

Who am I rooting for? I'm female, ain't I? Well, Marcus of course. We haven't had such eye candy in a loooong time.
However Jeff, the more I read you, the more I like you. As INXS would say, you're one of my kind.

Debbie K. Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

I'm happy with who has been voted off. I think G.C. should be next.
Just to shake up alliances, wouldn't it be fun to draw buffs and switch tribes up every 3 days or so? It could keep tribes more balanced during challenges.

Tanya Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

Love your blog, Jeff. It's going to make for one very entertaining reunion show/finale.

Michelle S. Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

I think that for the most part I like the Kota tribe a little better because they act like they've watched Survivor before.
I would not cry if GC is sent packing soon. It's so irritating to see people who don't even try run their mouths about everything & everyone else. There are a lot of people who'd have been happy to be in his place.
Congrats on the Emmy Jeff...Been a fan since Rock & Roll Jeopardy :)

Jenny Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

jeff...will you marry me?

Heather Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

So....Papa J....(LMAO) as requested, comments:
Lovin Sugar.....how fabulous that she smoked Dan on Exile. LOL. I'm also loving Charlie and Randy. I'm seeing the most of the girls, are too busy whinning to focus on the game at hand, well mostly the girl on Kota. OMG they make me wanna listen to nails on a chalkboard instead of them.

jess Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

Right now I'm rooting for Ken! Not a fan of too many on Kota, except maybe Bob...too soon to say for sure though. I do like Sugar, but she needs to get away from Ace, can't stand him! I'm sure I'll change my mind later after seeing more.

no-idol Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

I gotta add, Thanks Jeff (even though it's casting) for throwing a Mainer in the mix. Bob is great. Next time go even further north for the casting, people DO like to see the people out there who can fend for themselves in the "wild".
BIG Fan, congrats on the EMMY!

janetms383 Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

So far, I haven't seen the "likeability" factor in Sugar. Maybe it's because I know she was recruited and she isn't a fan of the game. She's not there because she was eager to be a Survivor, but rather her motivation is to further her career.
I'm just saying.........

Kim N Cocoa Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

I have to disagree on one thing. Most of the folks we have talking about it liked Gillian. I could live with seeing Ace leave. After last night I do like Sugar. GC is a waste of space. And I like the Older guy.

MegranFuyis Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

i newbie plz how us the baton "add me"?

Sabrina Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

I didn't care either way about Sugar before, but I really like her as of last night. Until she told smuggy Ace about the idol - ugh! When are they going to learn to keep those things to themselves?! Otherwise I'm rooting for Ken, Bob, and the Kota alliance of four, until they become complacent or annoying...

Jack M Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

Love ya Jeff! Isn't it great when Marcus says, "This is the most important immunity challenge in the game so far," and it's only the third episode? LOL!

Kel Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

I'm rooting for Charlie and Ken. They are both players who are not really making any waves, but are still rocking at the challenges.

To DMJ Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

You don't like Jeff? Who doesn't like Jeff? That's...blasphemy! No, really, it is! ;-)

DMJ Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

Don't have someone I'm rooting FOR as much as I have people I'm rooting against (Corrine, Ace, GC). I wasn't surprised to see Paloma going home last night (editing practically confirmed it) but I was hoping that Kota would change it up a little and do some surprise evicting with Ace. But, LOVE the blog and I'm not even a huge Probst fan (he interferes too much at tribal, imho).

Kellan Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Because we haven't seen much of all the players, I'm rooting for Marcus, Matty, Charlie, and Sugar. I like Bob and Randy too. Of course, this means none of them will make it to the Final 2 or 3.

Dana Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

JP you are right it is hard not to want to root for Sugar she is very likable. I am also an Ace fan he is interesting, could care less about the two blondes don't even know their names they bore me. GC needs to go home and quick!

Pinky Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

It's kind of early in the game to start calling out favorites but I'd say Ace, Sugar, Crystal, and Marcus. Who are the 2 blondes on the Kota team? It seems like every season on Survivor we get 2 or 3 players that are completely quiet until just before or after the teams merge. Are they that boring? Thanks for blogging J!

Love you Jeff! I think I might be the only person rooting for Ace. I have never gotten a winner right from the beginning so what the hell do I know...

thinkworldpeace Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

Loving the blog Jeff!!! Sending it to all my survivor friends. We have never missed an episode!!!!!!!! True survivor fans here in Audubon, New Jersey.

earthbound misfit Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

Jeff- Love ya man. What are you going to do after Survivor runs its course? I hope you find some TV project that is worthy of you! I get so tired of the other reality show host that are nothing more than talking heads.

Good ridance to the WEAK! I hate it when the weaker players fly under the radar. thats B.S. Keep those dang teams switched up more! Don't let the usual/expected alliances to form. Make it to where EVERYONE thinks they could be on the chopping block. GOD! I am so sick of those weak ass alliances. Break them up for some fun!!

Marie Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:23 AM EST

Hey, Jeff. LOVE YA !!! Congrats on the Emmy!

MissBumptious Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

First, Jeff - I effing love you. You don't hold back. There, it's outta my system.

Second, I've got to root for Physics Teacher Guy, since we're from the same town and he hasn't completely embarrassed himself yet. Not even going to snark about a certain previous Survivor from my area - and that, my dear Jeff, is how much I love you...

Anyway, I get a huge kick out of Randy and hope he sticks around a while. He absolutely loathes every living human being, and his overtly contemptuous facial expressions are Great Effing Television.

As for who I'm rooting for...maybe Charlie (I'm with you, Dalton). He's so adorable - he's like a Golden Retriever. That hasn't been fixed. And that unrequited love should get interesting...

SPiddy Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

Loving the blog, Jeff - a perfect complement to Dalton's excellent (and witty) recaps. I'm one of those loyal Survivor fans, having missed a total of 2 episodes in 17 seasons, both due to technical malfunctions (sadly, one of them was the Gabon premiere). Congrats on the well-deserved Emmy and please keep up the snippy banter, at tribal and in the blog.

John Doe Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:01 AM EST

Hi Jeff,

Keep up the great work with the columns.

I'm rooting for Bob. Ayuh!

I Got Soul Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

Great blog!!!! This should have been done seasons ago! I'm rooting for Dan to win!

Wes Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 07:46 AM EST

Jeff- I appreciate your candid opinion on Michelle, Gillian, and Paloma. Each season there tends to be 3-4 people who are put in just to fill quotas. You had two hot young girls and one older annoying mother (Wanda anyone?).
As a viewer who has stayed true and watched every episode every Thursday night ( except for March Madness), you appreciate the stronger and more charismatic players then the players who fly under the radar and eventually make it to the final 4. (Courtney + Denise China, Cassandra Fiji UGH, Becky UGHHHH and Sundra Cook Islands, etc) When you learn to appreciate the characters, you start to worry that they are going to get voted out. I was dreading that Ace would go the way of Hunter Ellis or Joel from Micronesia. Ace is a real fun person to watch and either root for or root against.

Lets hope that either Ace, Marcus, or Randy make the final 4 and not Susie, Sugar, Kelly, and Ken.

pobody's nerfect Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 07:42 AM EST

Is it wrong to be pulling for Randy? I like that there is no BS about him. BTW who's Lindsay as in "what would Lindsay do?"

billybobsnortin Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 07:31 AM EST

I like Randy, Sugar, Marcus, Charlie. Loving this season so far. The (literal) landscape is so aesthetically pleasing. You know, like those shots of Sugar stripping half-naked in the forest.
Hey Jeff, is anyone going to get fired for that shot of Marcus's pee pee slipping through the cracks?

Jerami Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 06:42 AM EST

Keep up the great work Jeff...I think some of the best moments in survivor is when you ask the right questions to stir the pot at Tribal...you really can get a good feel on whos with who and whos dedicated to who with the facial expressions. The only thing I didn't like about this week was losing eye candy plus I actually thought she could be a little hellian stirring the pot behind the scenes...guess not. My favorite so far is Corrine...although I think she's already being considered a power player.

Anne Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 05:33 AM EST

Yay, Jeff (J Diddy)! So much fun to be writing to you "directly". Your blogs are great, but what I love best is the videos you do with Dalton. There should be an MTV prize for best chemistry between a reality TV host and the media who cover the show. You and Dalton would wins hands down! xxxxx

Corran Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 03:37 AM EST

Hey Jeff thanks for the blog! I will say I kinda miss Michelle just a bit. Her strength could have carried her team, and the hot chick with the nerdy guy bits were some of the best moments in the premiere.

Laura Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:07 AM EST

Yay! I love your blogs, Jeff. For one, when Survivor isn't on, I miss your pointed looks of exasperation during tribal council and challenges. It's a part of my regular TV season! But anyway, haven't quite decided who I'm rooting for yet. I definitely like Sugar, but I was impressed so early last week with the "Onion" alliance getting it together that fast - plus they reminded me of the awesome foursome from Big Brother this last season (DRMK). So I'll hold off a little longer on who I'm rooting for. But next weeks switch looks awesome. They have to rank the tribe?! That's going to be AMAZING.
