'The Graysons': The Worst Idea Ever of the Week

Oct 2, 2008, 04:26 PM | by Marc Bernardin

Categories: Comic Books, I'm Just a Geek, Ninjas, Television

Burtwardrobin_l According to Variety, the CW has ordered a pilot for something called The Graysons, a Smallville-esque drama which will trace the adolescence of Dick Grayson in the years before he becomes Robin, Batman's partner-in-crimefighting. How Smallville-esque, you ask? Well, it's being executive produced by the Smallville showrunners (along with McG) and, in case Clark Kent doesn't last another season, The Graysons is being positioned as a potential pre-superheroic replacement.

Follow me after the jump for an explanation of why this is the Worst Idea Ever of the Week.

1) Dick Grayson's origin story goes like this: He was a kid when his circus-acrobat parents died in an "accident" engineered by very bad men. He's taken in by Bruce Wayne, who channels the kid's fury into fighting crime, and gives him a girl's/bird's name to do it. Not a whole lot there to base a TV show around, unless you monkey with his origin to a point where it's unrecognizable. Which is exactly what they're doing. According to the Variety piece, The Graysons "will be set in modern times, young DJ will face challenges involving first loves, young rivals and his family as he grows up." Ecch.

2) They're changing his name to D.J. Grayson. Look, I get that you don't want your hero to be called "Dick" all the time. But what's wrong with "Richard'? Every time I hear "D.J." I think its going to be followed by "and the Bear."

3) Of all the DC Comics properties to make a TV show out of, this is the wrong one to choose. Hell, even if you wanted to make a Batman-related show, to capitalize on The Dark Knight's success, there are far better choices. Here's one, of the top of my very large head: Gotham Central, a police procedural that shows how the cops deal with all the stuff Batman doesn't have time for. You never once have to show Batman, it's not his show. So, no tights. But you still have access to the entire Batman rogues gallery. You do that one right, it's like Law and Order...but 23 percent more awesome.

4) See No. 2. Blurg.

brian Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

this is totally retarded. dick is like 14 when his parents get killed. are we supposed to watch him go through middle school? have it take place when he's in college, then law school and becoming nightwing. PLEASE!

Rob Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 01:27 AM EST

Wow! It amazes me how negative people can be. This show could be used as a tool to introduce the rogue gallery of villens (sp?)in their younger years. What I would do is keep the back story but make Dicks father an amateur slueth wanna-be. It's his dad outst night trying to fight crime like the superheroes that exist in his world. Young Dick discovers what his father is doing and convinces him to take him along. You set up a main villen who has it out for papa Grayson. Eventually he succeeds in killing the graysons leaving Dick behind. This later explains why Dick joins Bruce in the fight. Bruce fills the role of Dicks father who tried to do what Batman is doing.

Open your minds people.

neena Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

I will also chime in and point out that if they really want something that cashes in on The Dark Knight but isn't Batman, then go for Nightwing. But I suppose that would be too "old" for the CW, which seems to believe that teenage girls will only watch shows about other teenagers. Surprised they didn't go for a Green Arrow spinoff, but I guess the new movie is killing that idea. One can only hope that this show goes no further than a pilot....

RTMS Sat, Oct 4, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

Birds of Prey was good, but with terrible support. Almost no money, terrible scripts etc and the fact the writers were handcuffed about what characters they could use on the show.
This idea is the same problem, following a circus act around the country? And the ending of the series is going to be a huge downer if they follow the comics, who wants to watch a kids parents get brutally murdered?Unless they screw that up and simply have him walking away from the family business after Batman gives him a job.Nightwing would be better.

Nix Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

No. 2 is so juvenile I'm shocked that adults would even consi.... oh, right, CW.

But I just question the timeline. Robin was Batman's sidekick since he was in early adolescence. Are they going to do this like the (idiotic) Schumacher movies where Robin is a young man? (Although I note Schumacher was perfectly happy saying "Dick".)

Now, Gotham City PD--that's hot. But avoid the top 2 of the Joker and Catwoman; they belong to the Bat. But a reimagined and formidable Riddler? Ooh. Or even the Penguin in his guise as a rich, purportedly up-and-up businessman--they're pretty evil these days.

RickD in Denver Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Wow ! The last time I heard so many negative remarks about a tv series in development ,about a comic book character, was during the months before Smallville's first season.Cut the guys some slack and give them a chance to put together the show. Although I agree callingsuch an iconic characterby his intials ,instead of calling him Dick,is a bit too much. Keeping in mind that The Graysons were a circus act,a series based on his pre Robin years could be interesting.Especially as they tour across the country.

Mikey M Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Horrible idea. They passed on Aquaman a few years back but want a pilot for this?
Bad idea!
A Justic League or Green Arrow Spinoff would provide more entertainment and material than Robin.
The CW Execs drinking on the job again?

Batman Fan Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

I think they should make a funny spin-off about the Gotham Girls--Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman.

mark in nyc Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

This is the worst idea ever. Please CW take the salaries of any three executives and donate it to the poor. Much better use of your money.
I would watch a Gotham PD show or even a show called Luthor, about how Lex sees an all powerful alien invasion happening and is the only human trying to stop it. Be great to see his side of things.

C St Cross Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

The key phrase here is that "CW ordered" the pilot--meaning this wasn't a writer's idea, but the studio commissioned it, probably looking ahead to Smallville ending after this season. This stunningly craptactular idea for a show is why studios placing orders for pilots as if they were fast food is almost always a bad idea. It's a waste of time, money, and, sadly, talent.

Stephanie T. Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

According to Batman, The Graysons were a circus troupe. A Show is going to be focused on that?

BrandonK Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 07:51 AM EST

Now that's a police procedural I can get behind...sounds great! Although they kind of tried something similar with "Birds of Prey" and that didn't do too well. Sometimes I think producers and creators use their imaginations for evil...there are so many possibilities in the DC Universe to choose from...why go for Dick Grayson and then change everything about his story anyway?

Rich Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 07:44 AM EST

What they should do is show the origins of Darth Vader. Instead of making him the most awesome, evil villain of all time, they could show him as a whiny, emo surfer dude that can't act. Oh, wait...

Sina Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 07:14 AM EST

Why can't they do this with an X-Men character like Gambit. He was always my favorite. That Grayson idea will suck just as bad as the Small Wonder remake they want to do.

Adam Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 05:32 AM EST

It's B.J. and the Bear. Not D.J. and the Bear.

Michelle Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

I know I said this already, but two words, CW: GREEN ARROW! There's so much story to mine vis a vis Oliver Queen. Come on see what's right in front of your face!

Snarf Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

Ugh. They passed on Mercy Reef (the Aquaman series that was to star Justin Hartley a couple of years ago) which had a great premise, set up and the pilot was actually really good and now offer up this limp idea? Cripes.

Rob Postuma Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:48 PM EST

Why SMALLVILLE worked:
the PAYOFF at the end of the series - is that you've followed one young man's journey into becoming a the greatest hero we have ever known. It's almost like you're part of his journey

Why "The Graysons" won't work:
you follow this young man & his family on his journey to become a hero, and then he only takes that "next step" after they brutally & senselessly kill off his parents, who've we've become to love as our own almost - only to be taken under the wing of a sociopathic loner vigilante. And even then, he goes from "top banana" to "side-kick"

Also, while Robin was created so that kids would have someone to identify with - most kids more readily identified with Robin.

aa Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:46 PM EST

gotham central sounds good the batman could be a great but never seen character. but what about a series based on harley quinn and/or poisin ivy? when they team up on the cartoon series its lots of fun. their origins, why they're all kinds of crazy, why harley sticks with the joker no matter how crappy her treats her. poisin ivy tree hugger or ecoterrorist.

Rob Postuma Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:46 PM EST

Rob Grizzly Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:30 PM EST

1. Smallville sux. They've f'ed up Superman bad enough, do they really need to suck Batman's mythology into their vortex of doom as well?

2. What little actually DOES work for Smallvile couldn't translate for many other heroes. That's why they are having trouble spinning off Aquaman, Green Arrow and Supergirl. Why do they keep forcing this?

3. This concept of the "pre-hero" is starting to really tick me off, if all they are going to do is change every. single. thing we know about him.

4. Of all the characters to choose, of all the directions to take, they decide to make basically the exact same show, but with someone no one likes?

5. Why not a Nightwing series? Or the GCPD procedural. Both sound 100 times better than watching another teen soap (this time set around circus carnies!)

6. DJ by comparison, sounds worse than Dick. I think of the kid from Roseanne... yo, DJ! What up G?

7. Could someone else handle this project? Like maybe the guys who do LOST? Anyone but the CW.

Ragna Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST

AMEN to making "Gotham Central" into a TV show. Just don't screw up on the casting of Renee Montoya, because then I'd have to hurt people. Or not watch the show.

KenBud Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

I could do a Teen Titans/Kids Justice League kinda show that was a drama/action ...... not with cheesy costumes, rather with real people like Smallville.

i still think a "group-superhero" show would do well.

Jamaaliver Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

Is it a sitcom? It sounds like a comedy.......

bb Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 08:27 PM EST

I'd rather see a Catwoman show or something. But Robin? Pure suckage.

Stephanie Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 08:24 PM EST

Every time I hear "D.J." as a name I think Tanner, i.e. D.J. Tanner.

Quincy Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

This is just another reason why CW, or WB, or UPN, or whatever they want to call themselves:
1) Suck
2) Are a joke
3) Are why less people watch network TV

Meg Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

Funny... every time *I* hear DJ, it'll be followed by "Tanner".

DON Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:34 PM EST

This sounds like a joke. Sure they didn't announce it on April Fools Day?

It makes Birds of Prey sound like a better choice. Aquaman was never a good idea. It would have ended up being "Super Baywatch." Supergirl spin-off would have crashed and burned only slightly faster than a Green Arrow spinoff.

I do like the idea someone suggested about Nightwing -- Can't get Batman, use Batman Jr. The police procedural (whether it's "just" cops or Gordon's rise) is a much better concept.

Here are a couple of my ideas to throw into the mix -- first, spin-off options...

1. Lex Luthor. This would be an interesting arc to follow.

2. Lois and/or.Chloe
The investigative girl reporter(s) before there was a guy in a cape to fly to her rescue full-time. Still allows for existing Smallville heroes to drop in (Aquaman, Green Arrow, et al.)

Originals: let's be bad!

3. Joker
Why not follow the rise of the clown prince of crime?
4. Harvey Dent, Attorney At Law
5. Catwoman
could work

Eric Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:20 PM EST

I totally agree with the Gotham Central comment. Maybe on another network though. This is the CW we're talking about where being over 30 is basically the same as being at death's door. I could totally see it on cable.

Chris K. Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 07:09 PM EST

Pliskin

There was also a comic-book series called "Gotham Central." That's where the idea for adapting it into a TV show came from.

keiren63 Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

How can anyone think the audience would enjoy a show where, the entire time you're watching him interact with his parents you're wondering, "Is this the episode where they die?". Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

Pliskin Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

Gotham Central? It's been done: Read "Powers" by Brian Michael Bendis.

Aliza Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:24 PM EST

yeah, i love the character Dick Grayson, but no one is gonna wanna watch a show about him pre batman. maybe a Nightwing show, when he's cool enough that people may not be so juvenile to laugh at his name. what they should do is a Green Arrow spin-off.

Tyler Barnes Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

I agree with your view of the proposed t. v. series on Robin's origins. Laura Vandervoort (the actress who played Supergirl/Kara Kent on Smallville) recently revealed that the C W had considered creating a Supergirl spin off series, but it did not work out. That would have been a far better idea to my mind. It would be a more logical follow up spin off series to "Smallville" since it would feature and star Clark Kent's super powered Kryptonian cousin who is played by a beautiful, sexy and gorgeous actress. The writers/show runners of "Smallville" treated the Kara character so badly that I actually I wrote and mailed a letter of protest about their decision not to have Kara as a series regular character and to leave the character in the Phantom Zone. I like to think my letter was a factor in their decision to bring Laura Vandervoort back for at least one episode to wrap up Kara's story line.
I will not watch the new Robin series as it will be dull and silly.

nate Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

I Agree this is a horrible idea for a show. Warner Bros will NEVER allow Bruce Wayne or Batman to interact on the show since they have famously denied the character to Smallville and they have begged the entire time it has been on air. What is the point of having a powerless kid in a circus if he will never meet Batman never be trained to fight. Like someone else said it would be better to just use Nightwing. At least he is trained and you can have some of the other DCU characters visit the show and believably interact

jackhonky Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

did anyone see the trailer for the fake movie "Grayson"? it actually looked decent for what it was (you can find it on YOUTUBE). way better than what this sounds like.

need i remind people of the show "BIRDS OF PREY" that also came from the creators of Smallville? it was pretty bad. This sounds worse though.

Why don't they just dust off the Aquaman pilot and reboot that? The buzz was pretty big around it.

Domino Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

Holy Stupid Idea, Batman!

Justsaynotobadtv Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

Lol i stopped reading after "(along with McG)"

I refuse to watch anything that hack has somethin to do with. If i found out he was doing an episode of lost, which i watch religiously, i'd skip it for fear the cast would be taken over by super models and product placement all involved in huge explosions.

raven Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

The Graysons sounds horrible. I would totally watch Gotham Central though!!

Bella Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

This doesn't sound to promising...

I would rather see a show about Nightwing. Batman wouldn't even have to be in it.

I've heard that Gotham Central has been shopped around before. Why hasn't it become a TV show yet!? If you liked The Dark Knight, you'll like a TV show based on Gotham Central.

Tim Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

I... I'm agast. what a terrible idea. And I'm a big genre fan and a Batman fan as well. If they want a young skewing repalcement for Smallville, there are at least a dozen GREAT ideas I can think of... and none of them would *ever* call Dick "DJ". It's... horrifying.

cole Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

Except that it was BJ and the Bear.

Jake Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

This has got to be one of the worst things I've heard since the Palin Couric interview.

Liddy Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

This reminds me of the Family Guy skit about Robin...Yes, agree, totally terrible idea.

mike Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

of all the dumb ideas. dj grayson... arg.

anyone reading the batman comic nowadays? batman just lost. bad.

mage?! Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

I love Batman and almost every thing involved in world, but this has all the makings of a disaster. I never liked smallville because of the "reinvisioning" and I am not looking forward to this treatment. Why don't they stop this and seek new ideas instead, isn't that what writers do?

Amanda Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

I think Gotham Central sounds awesome! A crime procedural with comic villains is genius.
The Graysons is total blurg.

DKT Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

Or they could've done Dick Grayson as Nightwing...after he'd moved out of Wayne Manor. That would've been a lot more interesting and brooding than this schlock.

Jason Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

While i am not sure this is going to be a terrible show, i am not sure it will be good either. This show sounds average at best. However, the Gotham Central show would be incredible. You could even include superhero cameos like they do on Smallville if you wanted to. Or since the Batman villains, for the most part, are not super powered, it could be very realistic. There are always new crime dramas on television so whats wrong with one more, especially with that premise.

Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

LOL if Gotham Central was on CBS, would it be dismiss as a another procedural

Michelle Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

I've said it a hundred times: Give Ollie/Green Arrow his OWN show!!!!!!!! For the love of god, no one cares about Robin!

Eric Friedmann Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

This idea doesn't sound any better or worse than any other garbage idea that's managed to make it to the TV and movie screens.

alex Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

It's "BJ and the Bear", not DJ

Raven_Moon Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

What an awful idea! They can make this, but they couldn't give "Moonlight" a shot? Anyway, everytime I hear D.J. I think of "Full House," which is not something that should be associated with Batman-related things. As for "Gotham Central," I think I might actually watch that. Off topic, what ever happened to the Aquaman show they were supposed to be doing?

Green Gummi Bear Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

And I thought I was old, when I think "DJ", I think of Full House. And yes, this is SO going to SUCK. They have really had problems with the Chloe-Clois-Lois issues in Smallvile, how can they not spend any amount of time on this guy and already be painted into a corner where they have to go straight to who he was post-Batsy. And I thought when you were suggesting Gotham Central, it would be all about Gordon's rise...now that could work.
