David Archuleta's liner notes break the word count bank

Categories: 'American Idol', Merchandising, Music

Davidarchuleta_l_2 David Archuleta's self-titled debut album (out Nov. 11) is starting to make the press rounds, but without giving too much away (that's what critic Chris Willman is for; look for his review in next week's EW), we'd like to preview the American Idol runner-up's extensive liner notes, which clock in at just over 3,500 words (2,000 of which are his Thank You's) and include 6 lol's, 8 haha's, and 16 exclamation points. Some highlights:

Props to the fam:
Dad: Thanks for putting up with me for so long, never giving up, and keeping your cool. You always believed in me even during the times I didn't, and you always try to lead me in the right direction. You've dedicated a lot of your time and I appreciate that. So thanks for all of your help.

Mom: You raised me to be who I am and have taught me so many things. When things get frustrating, you're there to try and lighten things up. I've looked up to you for being very understanding, and trying to keep things peaceful. Even though I'm pretty sure I get my communication skills from you and we're both bad with words (haha), you're sensitive to people's emotions. Thanks for letting me do this.

More snippets from Archuleta's liner-tome after the jump.

BFFs:
Thanks for the advice you guys gave, and for your opinions on pictures and songs for the albums (lol)... Jessie, you didn't let me stay a hermit, and I'm glad for that (haha). Thanks for making me laugh all the time. Fish, for being so amazingly cool. Your obsession with taking pictures actually helped a lot with what was to come and you helped me get over my fear of cameras (lol).

Musicians/Influences:
I'd also like to thank some of the artists who have inspired me to love music. Thank you Tamyra Gray and Kelly Clarkson for showing me how a performance can really move you. Thanks to Natalie Cole for being one of my biggest influences musically. Stevie Wonder for showing the creative and soulful side. Natasha Bedingfield for showing you can be yourself, and not be limited. Eva Cassidy for showing me that music can change lives for the better. Thank you to my recent influences Jason Mraz, John Mayer and Sara Bareilles for helping remind me the artistic expressive side and letting me have a good time listening too.

Shout-out to the UT:
Thank you to all of my neighbors and members from church who have shown their love and support every step of the way... It has meant the world to me to see the support from Utah, and I hope I make everyone there proud :) Go Murray, Utah!

All hail vocal coach Dean Kaelin:
It's meant a lot to me that you were so willing to help out and would take time out of your busy schedule to do it whenever I was feeling worn out (haha). You helped me stay in my small space and keep my vowels narrow even though I still forget now and then. All those calls have done so much! Thanks for sticking with me and helping me get through those rough years when I had all those issues (lol).

American Idol and Fox:
Thanks for helping make this dream come true... It's amazing how many people were a part of that experience and each one of you made it an amazing memory for me... Thank you Wendy Wilhite! You were so understanding to the pressure and intense schedule, and being able to talk every day helped me get through the crazy schedule each week. Thanks for helping me get through my schoolwork and letters (haha). You made it so much fun... Thanks Jill Hudson, Alex Gillespie, Jennifer Sprague and Dru Libby for getting me through the PR things smoothly while having a good time! haha

"My 'family' for the last year (haha)":
Cook, Syesha, Jason, Brooke, Carly, Kristy, Michael Johns, Ramiele and Chikezie: You have all been so inspiring to be around, and I look up to you guys a ton. You've been like my big brothers and sisters and I've had so much fun. I hope we'll still be able to keep in touch, and I look forward to watching you all grow in your careers. I really feel like you guys were there looking out for me and helped me get through some of the difficult moments, even if you didn't realize it since I was always kinda in the background spacing out or whatever (lol). But thanks.

Not to harsh on Archie, but we're barely skimming the surface here. He goes on (and on...and on...) to mention executives at 19 Entertainment, Jive Records, songwriters and producers who worked on the album — among them, new Idol judge Kara Dioguardi, Diane Warren, David Hodges and Robbie Neville (strangely absent is JC Chasez, with whom Archuleta co-wrote the track "Don't Let Go") — as well as his beloved Abuelita (grandma, whom he addresses in Spanish), members of his management team, the Idol tour crew, and finally, the fans.

Okay, so maybe he's a little green, but how about being more green? Think of all the trees that had to give their lives for his CD packaging. Of course, as many of us know, a post-Idol recording contract by no means guarantees you'll have a follow-up, so maybe Archie just had to take the opportunity to get it all out. But if this isn't an argument for transitioning to digital delivery, I don't know what is. Who's with me?

He is amazingly talented and has tons of fans!
And what the heck, the liner notes are NOT wasting paper at all. They're on the back of his poster.

Obviously EW would have criticized Archuleta if he hadn't included those notes.

Really, the writers at EW had nothing else to write about so they had to pick on linear notes?

And don't they realize his message was on the BACK of the poster from his CD?

Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

The author of this article is "big boned". I hope she is taking her own advice about going green by recycling all of her old pizza cartons, cheetos bags, and diet coke cans. Just sayin. . .

David Archuleta represents what we all should strive to be, more thankful! Looking forward to the album!

sweetie Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 10:53 PM EST

Yap! People are so jealous of that young man name David Archuleta, is just because he is a superstar now and cooks fan can't accept the reality.. that Cook is a loser!!!

Gosh! Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

Um...Arch Angels....why is it you think *I* need to chill out? Your post only proved my point that fans like you go way overboard in defending David. If my post disturbed you that much, I rest my case 'HONEY'!

And who are you to insinuate I'm pretending to be a fan? Believe it or not, some of us are normal unlike you.

Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

"If you are so worried about being green, tell Cook to turn the light off."
lol.
I love David Archuleta!

Ginger Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

David is so sincere. We all love the way he is and his way of thank people. If it is over 3500 or over 3 million words, so be it. We enjoy reading them.

Keritzle Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

OMG! Chill out everyone. Free country - Free press. Everyone's entitled to their opinion and to express it, including EW and it's readers. No need for name calling.

Linahandbasket Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 06:33 AM EST

If you are so worried about being green, tell Cook to turn the light off.
David Archuleta is a wonderful example to everyone in how to be grateful and you are a fool to pick on him about it! Your mother failed you!

fay Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 03:17 AM EST

i see david archuleta as someone who choose to only see and say the good things about people. that's why media provokes him. i love david for standing up to his values & faith which is really hard to do. i praise him so much & shame to those people who always try to ruin him. i'm proud to be an arch angels!

CASUARINA Mon, Nov 3, 2008 at 01:14 AM EST

EW, all I can say you are a disgrace to journalism. You've been picking on DA since AI. You showed and still show your biasness so blatantly.Don't blog if you can't be fair and objective. To criticise his thank you notes is the lowest you can get. You know he's very good and you are so so evil to do that to a 17 yr old kid. What has he done to you that you have to attack him personally? I'm from Malaysia and I find it strange that some americans, the so called very civilised humans can stoop so low like this...Any way remain your sweet self David, the million 'thank yous' that you wrote will give you back a million 'you're welcome' Be yourself. Most of us LOVE you and will never stop LOVING you.

Scooter Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 11:53 PM EST

What a ridiculous thing to be critical of. Since when is saying "Thank you" a bad thing?? Liner notes (however extensive)hold special meaning for the artist and those who receive mention; I can't believe anyone thinks they are subject to be critiqued.
Contrary to being a sign that he is "a little green," David's liner notes are indicative of a genuinely good individual who appreciates the others who have contributed to his success and selflessly acknowledges them with a personalized shout-out. It certainly shows more heart than artists (or EW writers) who prefer notes with a generic laundry lists of names. Most of all, it's evident that David has not become jaded by his fame and success. These qualities should be praised, not criticised. Shame on you, Shirley, for posting this on the blog.

Kevin Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

This is ridiculous! David has the opportunity to thank everyone he feels he needs to. It's personal, it's his, in his words. This cannot be criticized. The journey this 17 year old kid has been on is his. I suppose to be featured on the cover of ew.com is not a bad thing one week before your album is released. I just wish they could write about something relevant. But hey...David sells and EW knows it.

Virginia Banker Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

Ok guys let who ever wants to talk about David. That was good that EW wrote about our David good or bad it just helps David"s ratings go up I love it. The more people talk the more we comment and the more David will benefit. We love our David and that is all that matters.

archangel48 Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

I keep hoping David "rubs-off" on the youth of today. Maybe they can help the future of America. P.S. some of us older folks could learn a thing or two from his humble nature. Too bad some consider this a bad thing!

I'm a big fan of David's, but even I'll admit that the fans sometimes go a little too overboard in their defense of him. We need to remember that David would simply shrug his shoulders at this article and agree that everyone's entitled to their opinion. I really don't think he gives a crap what EW or anyone has to say about who he thanks. That's his perogative.

David Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 06:46 AM EST

DAVID POPULARITY IS UNSTOPPABLE. HE IS DESTINED TO BE A SUPERSTAR!

POP CULTURE OF WHAT ? Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 02:47 AM EST

EW IS A POP CULTURE MAGAZINE OF WHAT? FULL OF CRAP - BUT THEY STILL HAVE TO MAINTAIN THE INTEGRITY OF JOURNALISM INSTEAD OF PROSTITUTING IT. CAN'T BLAME THEM THAT HOW THEY ARE BEING PAID TO WRITE CRAP JUST CHECK THER NAMES THEY ARE THE SAME PEOPLE WHO WRITE CRAP.

jambo Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 02:43 AM EST

I just read your article. David"s thank yous were so heart felt and sincere that your pettiness afterward really seemed jarring and out of place. Archuleta seems to be a genuinely nice guy.

GRATITUDE IS A VIRTUE Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 02:36 AM EST

I FIND DAVID ONE LINER NOTES VERY SINCERE AND INSPIRING ESPECIALLY FOR HIS AGE. I HOPE KIDS WILL FOLLOW HIS EXAMPLE TO BE GRATEFUL TO THEIR PARENTS AND FRIENDS WHO SUPPORT THEM ON THEIR ENDEAVOR IN LIFE. YES, GRATITUDE IS A VIRTUE.

accord Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 02:14 AM EST

joel, the real thing that is obvious is that the kid puts his heart into everything, even his thank yous.

Charles Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 02:12 AM EST

Most of the writers at EW write like juvenile males and the women have to talk the same talk in order to be accepted into this boy's club. They are for the most part snide, insolent, and insensitive. There are few good writers at EW, but the management must foster the smartass approach to journalism. Sells more magazines, I guess. It is really unpleasant to me though. (I thought it was funny that Slezak in his final in-person interview with Archie, seemed amazed that David didn't even know who he was or even cared that he trashed him week after week in his column) Chris Willman's review next week I predict will be in the vein. I hope not, but you can't be in the club and like Archuleta. It's not cool. I hope David can remain oblivious to this kind of stuff.

Robin F Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 01:43 AM EST

You know if we have learned anything from david it is to smile in the face of adversity. I for one am very pleased at his cd liner. It shows that all the publicity has not gone to his head. I know he seems surreal to most. You think he can't really be that nice and good. The DJ's all over the coutry that interviewed him found that he is the real deal.He is just a good kid that doesn't take it all for granted. A true breath of fresh air. Its okay one day you will see it for yourself. Have a wonderful day.

joel Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 01:13 AM EST

People, get over yourselves. EW is a pop culture magazine. Its purpose is to write about -- and comment on -- pop culture. David A.'s ridiculously long-winded liner notes fit under the pop culture banner, thus, open for comment by EW's writers. It's called observation. No different than talking about Oprah on "30 Rock" or McCain on "SNL." Was this story necessary? Of course not. But without professional writers, critics and commentators, the David Archuletas of the world would fade into oblivion faster than they already will even with all of this media attention. You might be a little overly sensitive to the writer calling David out for being very, very young in his liner notes approach, but it's clearly meant in good fun. Besides, Shirley isn't criticizing David's intentions, she's merely pointing out the obvious -- the kid tries too hard at everything, even his thank yous.

Rae Sun, Nov 2, 2008 at 01:31 AM EST

Well, guess it would not be a story to say great artist, awesome music, sincere, thankful, amazingly down to earth, humble young man. Gosh, thanking too many people? In "his" own words? I am sure you jaded industry types will come around....
I hope David never changes, but...I am sure in the world of polished publicists, full of spin, you will try to change him.

GRATITUDE IS A VIRTUE Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 11:51 PM EST

We love David, he is the BEST!!!

ANd the only one!!!

TwistedAngel23 Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

Seriously complaining about liner notes?? Sheesh. If he wouldn't have thanked half the people in there you would have critisized that as well. What is up with this? EW always has something negative to say about Archuleta, and you really couldn't come up with something better than trashing liner notes? Pathetic! David is amazing human being, and thankful for all the oppertunities he has and for the people in his life! What a horrible person he is! *rolls eyes*

Virginia Banker Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

Some ppl love our David.
And the DJ from PRO 92 was quite taken with David! (Thanks, Lise, for finding this.) This is what he had to say:

Well what can i say???? What a great time with David Archuleta yesterday. First of all let me tell you he is one of the most polite, honest and talented artists I’ve EVER met! (and I have met ALOT) He is a ‘what you see is what you get’ kinda kid’! When he was not on the air, he was the same as he was on. You don’t see that all the time. I donated an entire hour of programming to him, which i thought was the right thing to do. After all he is a star

beth Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

WOW!!!! There so much people so jealous of David A. Get a life people go concentrate with your idol cook, he is damm loser he needs your help real bad... Stay away from this site please!!!!!

Robin Engle Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

David is just being David. He is very humble, grateful, and gracious. Don't you have better things to write about instead of criticizing someone for being such a wonderful role model, artist, and person? I was honored to meet him in Baltimore briefly, and I only wish it could have been longer.

yesac Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

Wasted paper? you just wasted an article. It's soooo David, giving his overly thank you's, i don't see any harm in that. He's the sweetest guy, and come on, it's Thanksgiving month, we all love David because this is the kind of person he is. Give him a break, he's just a kid, its his FIRST album, i dont know about you but i would rather have someone being EXTREMELY grateful then none at all.

DJfan Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

Hey, I think the trees were rightly sacrificed if the result was to thank people and spread a little bit a good out into the world. What I do wonder is why Ms. Halperin is wasting electricity by writing pointless criticism that does the exact opposite. Hypocritical much?

Gail Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

I guess you did what you set out to do and that is cause controversy -again. Isn't it funny that with "this" star --all you can find to complain about is the fact he took the time and space in his CD to thank important people in his life and career. I think that must speak a lot for David's character--if this is the only "bad" thing you can find.

telia Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

Thanks for having part of the liner notes. His fans and anyone mentioned therein will love them. And anyone else that doesn't want to read them won't have to. I would love having a book about who and what he's thankful for.

MaryUtah Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

Since when did liner notes become review worthy? And when is being a nice guy a bad thing? It's like your making fun of him being thankful for the place he's in - Hey, it doesn't hurt anyone, and it makes him feel good - that's all that counts..

Rick Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

An article on liner notes!!!!! Talk about a waste of space. I'm sure Jive appreciate the free publicity though.

josh Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

Flash in the Pan,
Don't worry. He has six other recording companies (who offered contracts during Idol) waiting for making a deal after Jive. He is so young and has potential to be the great.

BTW, he always compliments JC Chasez on his radio interviews. My guess is that the liner deadline was early before the song with JC was confirmed to make the final cut on the record. I am not sure about Daniel Bedingfield who also co-wrote "Works for me" for the Walmart bonus track(online order only). I'll have to see the actual liner. Thanks for the peek.

Siena Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

Wow, the pathetic haters are really jealous and green with envy of the talented young David. Do yourself a favor and try to enjoy his beautiful music, it's practically therapy and will make you all miserable people more relaxed and positive!

You can't fight it, David will be around to inspire and entertain us for a long time!

PJ Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

We get it, EW. You prefer David Cook over David Aruchuleta. When you're complaining about the inside of the album cover, you're probably taking this love-hate relationship a little too far.

Flash in the Pan Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

He's got to get it all out now, it's the only album he'll ever make.

DavidAfan Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

The liner notes are really sweet and I can't wait to buy his album on November 11th!
However, I don't think Shirley meant anything by it. She was probably just poking fun at how long the liner notes were (but they were very, very thoughtful).
Love you, David Archuleta!!!

susan Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

David album is pretty good, most of them are very very nice and not boring compare to others. Like Jordin Sparks, I'm kinda dissapointed of her album, mostly are boring and big dissapointed on Taylor hicks only one song was good the rest suckssss!!!!

Kat, I love reading them too, I just always assumed I was in the minority:)

You know, I'll be curious to see how the CD booklet actually looks. How many PAGES do these thank-yous actually take up? Just because there is a high word count doesn't really mean anything. Maybe they used small font? Just a thought...

We love David A! Ignore the negative people who only wish they had your talent and popularity. I'm gonna buy your cd 'cause is one of the best cd of the year. All the tracks are excellent. Buy it on November 11-08. It's great!!

ArchieArnett Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Those liner notes are hilarious. A simple "Thank you :) to my family, friends and everybody at AI and 19 haha you guys have been awwwwesoooome! lol" would've sufficed.

Kat Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

I totally don't agree with you. The linear notes are usually the first thing I go to read when I get a new album (while the CD plays, of course)
and i looove reading them. All of them. The longer the better. and the more honest the better

amber Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

How many people actually read liner notes? Mostly the true fans. So, Shirley, these liner notes aren't meant for you.

LILY, these are only PART of the liner notes, the part to the fans isn't posted in this blog. Shirley even mentions this in her critique. We'll have to wait for the album to read that part. Can't wait:)

Hey, I'm one who cancelled my subscription to EW last season, but the kudos don't go to Idol for creating a show that caused such a 'large' response. Credit David Archuleta. I subscribed to EW because they began the season by COVERING David Archuleta. When their coverage became biased, I cancelled.

debbie Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

this is the david we've come to love. he is always considerate and thinking of other people. he knows the sacrifices people have made for him and he certainly has every right to express his appreciation. i wouldn't care if he wrote ten pages. maybe america wouldn't be in the sad shape it's in if there were more people with david's integrity living in it. he is a true role model for the kids his age. you go david. you're on your way to super stardom. peace!

Seriously? People are being critical of David's liner notes??!! SERIOUSLY???!!!!

You people are unbelievable. Yes, lets make fun of him because he's so humble, kind, and grateful. Yes, those are definitely traits to make fun of. *rolls eyes* That's what's wrong with this world today. People who are kind, positive, happy, and stick to their morals and values are considered weak and are made fun of. Let me tell you something. This world would be 110% better off if there were more people like David!!!

I'm so over all of these asinine articles and idiotic negative comments.....seriously.

Jane Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

I am so NOT with you on this Halperin! Sure it's a little embarrassing that his liner notes ramble, and it would probably be better if they were short, sweet, and more eloquent, but as so many others have pointed out, why criticize the kid for expressing thanks and recognizing that he didn't get to where he is on his own? Cut him some slack- he's young and hopefully he'll learn to be more concise as he matures, but he'll also hopefully never lose his ability to be grateful.

THEY GET PAID FOR WHAT THEY DO Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

DON'T EXPECT ANY GOOD THINGS FROM THE TABLOID WRITERS FROM EW. THAT IS THEIR LIVELIHOOD - THEY GET PAID FOR PROSTITUTING THE INTEGRITY OF JOURNALISM - CHECK THE NAMES THEY ARE THE SAME PEOPLE, WHO WRITE CRAP AND THEY ARE JUST MIND POLLUTERS OF THE SOCIETY. IF YOU ONLY KNOW HOW THEY LIVE THEIR LIFE YOU WON'T EVEN BOTHER THIS CRAP.

Overall, it's just kind of sweet and innocent, but along with the lols and !!!s, I'd have to give a shout-out to a few too many "you guys's." Sheesh!

Phyl Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

Shirley is it? Hmmmm. Since when is being grateful a negative attribute? If more people had David A's attitude and gratitude, life would be better. Remember... you didn't have to read or review his notes. Sounds like you need to lighten up and find someone to thank. Or did you get to your lofty position all by your self?

Not with you Halperin Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

So in your critique of the kid being too grateful and thanking too many people (??) you're questioning why he had the gall to leave someone out...

I'm all for being green, but c'mon, he should be allowed to express his gratitude when releasing his debut album.

Also, I'm going to assume that no trees had to be destroyed for your horrible post - thanks for that.

elena Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

Aww. This kid is like seventeen, eighteen. His mom taught him right in thanking all those people, but maybe singers should get editors, like writers. 'Cause scrolling through these thank you's already was making me bored!

kathy Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

I'm a Cook fan, but we Cook fans love our "little bro."

I think those liner notes are very sweet....lay off the poor kid...His first album--let him thank who he wants to thank....who is it hurting??

You go Archie!!

Cyndie Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 08:46 AM EST

I find all of the comments defending Archuleta comical. This article was not cruel, it was only poking harmless fun at the ridiculous long liner notes (and let's face it, they are needlessly long)and his superfluous use of LOL. How can you not make fun of a teenage pop idol?

Bridget Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

Is JC Chasez even relevant anymore? I'm thinking David doesn't want to be associated with an artist who has no label and hasn't in over a year. Besides mistakes happen.

AlexG Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

It's sad to see a reporter trying to be notorious by unfairly criticizing someone who want to offer to the world something out of his best efforts.

Confused Sat, Nov 1, 2008 at 07:43 AM EST

I see people hating on David Cook fans for posting nasty comments but I don't see David Cook mentioned anywhere except to say his fans are posting nasty comments. That's crazy.

I can't believe anyone took the time to write an article criticizing the length of Archie's thank you to all the people who helped him. At least he acknowledged them. There are alot of artists who wouldn't even take the time to say anything. When I met him he seemed like a very sweet kid and I think his words are genuine. So leave him alone unless you have something positive to say.
