Farewell, Abby Lockhart! (A.K.A. Maura Tierney is leaving 'ER' tonight)

Oct 16, 2008, 02:41 PM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: Television

Mauratierenyer_l It's Maura Tierney's last episode of ER tonight, PopWatchers -- as good a sign as any that NBC's medical marvel is drawing to an end, since it's kind of hard to imagine giving a rip about that show without her on it. Of course, a lot of us first fell in love with Tierney thanks to NewsRadio, but the fact that you guys voted her the Best Actress in a Drama in this year's inaugural EWwys means she doth gots mad skillz, yo. And I'd like to take a moment here to honor them, because I've been ranting about her underrated awesomeness in TV meetings for what seems like forever, and this is my last shot.

A brief character recap: Abby Lockhart was born from a one-ep guest spot as Carol Hathaway's OB nurse way back in 1999. She then entered med school, helped John Carter through his weird post-stabbing-of-Lucy addiction to pills, went back to nursing after her deadbeat ex stole her money, dealt with her bipolar brother and way more bipolar mom (Sally Field!), eventually got her medical degree, struggled with alcoholism, dated Luka Kovac, dated Carter, dated this sort of Paul Rudd-lookin' med student named Jake, fell in love with Luka, got pregnant, had his baby, nearly died in childbirth, struggled with alcoholism again, slept with Stanley Tucci, got back together with Luka for the most part, and recently survived an mob-related ambulance bombing. And that's leaving out the majority of the weekly attacks, storms, helicopter crashes, hijackings, kidnappings, run-ins with Forest Whitaker, and assorted other catastrophes she's endured over the past nine years. There really isn't room on the internets for all of it.

But see, it's not hard to suffer through season after season of an increasingly hysterical television program.  (People on soaps do it all the time.) What is hard is finding a way to ground even the most ludicrous storyline in an identifiable place, and to keep an audience deeply connected with your character despite all the reprehensible things the writers are making her do (like sleep with Stanley Tucci). With her immense compassion, subtlety, and earthy bull-whip power as an actress, Tierney has succeeded in turning Abby into that rarest of all TV entities: someone I consider a friend, and who I will actually miss. Maybe that makes me crazy, but I don't think I'm alone. And though I'm prone to exaggeration, I also don't think saying "ER would not have lasted this long without Maura Tierney" is any kind of overstatement.

So now I open the floor to you, PopWatchers, to share your favorite Abby moments in the comments and discuss how you'd like to see her go out. Tierney says she begged the writers to kill the girl off, but in the wake of Mekhi Phifer's somewhat ignoble passing in the premiere -- that dude deserved better -- I think we can all agree we'd like to see Abby walk out the doors under her own steam, no?

I am extremly glad they did not kill her off i was so upset for weeks that she left and er became boring but its finally getting a little better and rumor has it that she will be back for a few episodes!!
Maura Tierney is an amazing actress...she captured every scene and captivated the hearts of several...without her the show really would not be the same!

What poem was used througout the er episode of abby leaving? Please advise.

docmj Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 05:20 PM EST

I've watched ER all through my medical school days and it is still one program that I work into a study break for my anaesthesiology exams! It remains my favorite medical drama. Abby has been the best character since she first appeared on the scene and I am sad to see her go. Amazing how we can get so attached to these people - it is truly like saying goodbye to a friend. Well done Maura for such a great job!

hi my name is kaitlin and i really like to watch ER my favorite character is abby lockhart she is awsome like cheese on toast!
she is the best in the show.

teresa Sat, Nov 15, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

I loved the character Abby! I am so glad that she left the hospital happy and with her family. She had to go through so much turmoil to get there. I loved her friendship with Neela. They had each others back and loved each other as good friends. Thank you, Maura, for Abby. She was one of my most favorite characters on TV.

KT Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

Lynda Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 05:11 AM EST

I think the appeal - and maybe disappeal - of Maura Tierney lies in hr very ordinariness. She is not flashy. She does not kowtow to the Hollywood image of 'star'. She radiates the kind of personality that makes you want to sit in a bar booth and have a good laugh together. As an actress she exudes a character from within. The way she moves or doesn't move, her mannerisms and expressions carry a thought and the essence of a scene without words. She makes those around her look good by being so very good - and generous to them - herself. She will be missed on ER but I am totally looking forward to her next project!

Emma Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

I stopped watching the show after season 9 because I felt like it wasn't the same without Greene. Losing Carol, Doug, and finally Greene kind of did it for me. Abby was a good character but I never felt like she could carry the show. Carter was always the bomb and they were great together. I'm glad I never watched long enough to see that fall apart.

Thomas Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

for me I always wanted abby and carter to stay together. They both had problems, one was on drugs the other drinking but they helped each other out. I thought they were brilliant together.

The one stage Carter was going to ask her to marry him.

I thought the way they ended the relationship was baddly done on tv. the actors made the relationship so good on tv, it was like a doug and carol relationship. They just broke up and it was like i missed half a season of mourning for them, that they did not show on tv.

With Abby out the picture, i hope they start bringing in old cast members soon, plus i will not be surprised if near the end of the show, they have luke and abby together, so the show can end with us seeing them happily ever after type of thing.

Ellen Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

Abby is one of my favorite characters, for any show. I love her for the same reason I love Luka, they were so completely broken and wounded. To watch both Abby and Luka grow and heal was what kept me glued to ER. I wasn't a die hard shipper for them, as a couple, but I did ship them individually. I'm not disappointed they ended up together and happy. They both deserved a happy ending. What I appreciated about Abby and Luka, round 2, was Luka’s patience and willingness to meet Abby where she was. He went into it without preconceived notions or demands .I loved the strength and fragility of Abby. I appreciated her stubbornness, persistence, humor, assertiveness, wit, and insecurity coupled with self confidence. Maura is such a great actress. She gave Abby so many layers and conveyed a world of emotion with an expression or glance. I will miss her and everything she brought to ER. I hope we get to see the Kovac's again, like the last episode. I doubt it though.

Louise Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

E.R without Abby just doesn't seem to hold any interest for me. From Season 6 when Maura joined the show, I have been a loyal watcher even while people around me got tired of the show. I will probably watch till the show ends just to see what the writers come up with, but my heart will no longer be in it!

Mark Beeson Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

...loved the Abby character...flawed, imperfect, remarkable intellect, struggled to find her voice, often stumbled awkwardly around attention and praise...gosh, who can't relate to that...

entertainmenttodayandbeyond.com Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 07:22 PM EST

My favorite ABBY moment was the look on her face when Dr Greene says goodbye to her on his last episode of ER titled ORION IN THE SKY- A great piece of TV!

entertainmenhttodayandbeyond.com Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

I thought last nights episode was a GREAT piece of television! I loved it!

Stephanie Sousa Hendrix Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

No more ER for me. It was really good while it lasted.

Heather Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

Love her on this show, especially back when she was with Carter. Glad they didn't kill her off! It's nice to see a character on this show leave to live a happy life.

Ellen Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

I adore Abby and I thought her departure was rather anti-climactic, considering her importance. Yes, it's just like Abby not to want to make a big deal of it, but it's not like ER.

We've gotten so many great Abby moments - so many funny one-liners - but I must say Maura's best performance had to be when she knelt, in the dark, by her son's crib, as her alcoholic relapse began to destroy her again. She didn't speak, but the expression on her face spoke to every mother who knew they were not being the best they could be. That anguish came through so clearly, she didn't have to utter a word. It was as if we could read her mind.

Farewell, Abby. You rocked!

ALAN Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

Something that really got to me was the way Neela and Abby said goobye. They never actually said the words, but the look in their eyes, especially Neela's, as Abby left the operating room was so incredible. It said 100 things without the words. I absolutely love Parminder Nagra as an actress. I've always loved the Abby-Neela friendship......Last night's episode was really moving. This may sound corny, but it was like saying goodbye to a friend, it was really sad. For those us who have watched ER since the pilot episode, 14 years ago, it's been such a journey watching these people come and go.

Hemkit Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

I have to say, the character of Abby Lockhart never did anything for me. Of course, I never really cared for Carol Hathaway, either. I take Weaver and Lewis and Corday and Del Amico over Lockhart any day of the week.

DRS Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

I have been a loyal watcher of ER since the very beginning. While the quality has eroded over time, there has never been a doubt about the talent of the cast - every single performer is at the top of their craft in my opinion. No one more so than Maura Tierney. And last night, which didn't have any crashing helicopters, or exploding ambulances, or deaths of co-workers or children, proved once again how powerful and subtle her work has been on this show. I loved that she went out on a normal day, without fanfare, because that is who her character has been throughout her time on the show. She was the grounding force for 10 years and as I sobbed my way through the episode last night, I realized just how much I've come to love her and how much I will miss her, and this show.

MAP Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 10:47 AM EST

Although I don't read poetry or the bible, I too found the quotes from the old testament (Job 38) very moving. You may access it at the following link:

gray Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

The "poem" was from the book of Job in the Bible, in one of the last chapters when God is asking Job if he can do all the things God can do. Wonder if they chose that because of all the trials and tribulations Abby has lived through?

BOOMER420 Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

Maura Tierney is a great talent of TV and film. Her years on ER were a joy to watch. I have been a fan of ER since the pilot episode till now. the show has never let me down.It always had great actors, writers, and directors Its unfourtunate that NBC does not understand that this should be a flagship show of the network. Regardless of ratings. I would hope that another network would make a mega power play to take ER over to their network. Anyhow its been a great ride. I can't wait for the dvd of the whole complete series...

Lorrie Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 09:26 AM EST

I don't think that was a poem; T think those were Bible verses.

I'll really miss Abby; a former co-worker got me hooked on this show and when I was in the hospital for 3 months, there wasn't much to watch, but I started then. Actually, ER's on now (gotta love working from home). I'm glad Abby's with Luka and ended so sweetley with that waltz with Frank and Luka and Joe waiting outside.

Jack Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

What poem was used at the end of last evening' episode?

Thank you.

RTA Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 07:41 AM EST

So sad. Not just that Abby's gone but that the show is ending. ER was always a great fall-back program that you could count on for quality story lines and decent acting when all the "new" shows were dropping like hailstones all around it. Farewell, pretty lady, I'll miss you...

Sina Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 06:43 AM EST

Abby saved Er for me. I seriously loved this character. I thought her and Luka had one of the best tv romances ever. One of my favorite moments was when Luka and Abby broke up and Luka said "you are that pretty anyway" and that Carter can have you. I was so sad and when they found their way back to each other, I rejoiced. Carter got back with his true soulmate, I had to endure Luka with that annoying nurse and her son, and I watched Abby drink and find herself again. Oh and Luka and Abby's wedding was beautiful. I miss you Abby!

Linda Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 04:53 AM EST

I have to say after all these years last night was the saddest. I remember way back when Carter and A bey had their thing going on. I just wish he would have been their when they opened the closet door, and the Nurse told Abbey she was the only one to have her name on the list twice. It was a very sad time for me. That's one program NBC will be missing very badly. Also they were talking about the rating's being so low for NBC well I know why, they take all the best watched, and favorites off, like Third Watch, and all the Law and Orders that have not returned. I hope NBC don't thing their fans that hsve been with them for so many years will hang out and watch the line-up they have on so far this season. NBC will be like lots of other thing going down fast and hard. I sure hate to see all of this to come down. NBC was all I watched, because of the great line-up they had on up until it all lined up for this year's season, but I just don't know know what they could be thinking about.

Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 01:07 AM EST

Sad. Like watching a little sister move away.

And the fact that her character annoyed so many viewers just proves what an underrated talent she is

Al Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 12:11 AM EST

Anyone bashing Abby at this point is not a true ER fan.She was the perfect flawed character thet held the show together for the past 7 years. Her story is simply over, as there was not anything else that could be done with and to her.I will always remember Abby in her "sexy nurse" outfit in a Halloween episode when she was dating Carter wayyyyyyy back in her second season.Long live the ER!

Fatima Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 12:06 AM EST

I've kinda ditched ER in the last 5 or so years, but with Angela Basset on now, and it being the last year, I've committed myself to it every week. I really am glad because tonight's was very moving. I'll miss her throughout the season, but I still have high hopes for a great finish.

This will probably not go down well, but Maura Tierney's character was the end of ER for me. Constant, whining, over-dramatised theatrics (with the godawful Sally Field only making things worse, 'fcrissakes!) marked ER's from absolutely the best thing on television into full on jump the shark territory. Compare and contrast the carefully constructed, beautifully written Doug Ross and Carol Hathaway's will-they-won't-they two step, and the hysterical soap operatics that followed. Perhaps not the character's fault. Maybe it was just Sally Field, or the show running out of ideas - but I haven't watched in a couple of years, and I'm not going back. I really miss it, though.

this was a good ending- have to say i'll miss luke way more than abby and she was not one of my fav characters- but she did remind me of alot of docs and nurses that i know! i will miss her as i do all the great characters they've had all these years! i've been watching since i was in my senior year of high school! by the way, does anyone know the poem abby was reciting at the very end? can't seem to find it online...

Abby leaving ER,is bad. I have watched this show since day 1 and Abby has been a great character in this show. Maura is a great actress, and she will be missed. However, I think it was a good time for her to leave. I will continue to watch ER until the last episode, only because I have seen every single episode. It def won't be the same without Abby, but hey you have to leave at some time.

I was absolutely amazed at this episode...they didn't throw crazy story lines and one crisis after another at her..it was a very well rounded episode and i'm very very very sad to see her go...i'm glad that the show is over after this year because i don't think that ER would be the same without her. i'm glad her exit was on a happy note : )

wow i just don't get all the love for her - don't get me wrong, i don't HATE her or anything, i just find her absolutely ordinary. I never for a minute bought her and Luka together - he was so beautiful and soulful and she was just a schleppy soccer mom (without actually being a mom) LOL Like one of those girls who thinks they're so gorgeous they don't need to make an effort -- except, unlike Angelina, Maura DOES need to make the effort

It's almost a crime that the most influential person on the show for the last nine years is leaving in such a quiet fashion. But it's also incredibly fitting, as her role on the show was often understated. Instead of having one chewing-at-the-scenery Emmy worthy performance each season, she showed up every single week and gave consistently great performances during her run. Very apropos that the show is ending the year she leaves, because it would truly suffer without such a perfectly human, beautifully flawed character.

Maura Tierney is the heart and soul of ER ever since she stepped on the screen so many years ago. She is my all time favorite actress ever.

she did a good job, and good for her for moving on - presumably on her own terms- instead of overstaying her stay on the show to become over- identified with this character .... She has a lot to offer and I look forward to seeing her in new projects... Fortunately ER is elastic and dynamic enough that it can survive the season despite her absence...
But I must ask ...why not spin at least one character off onto a new show???!!

I thought it was a good show - it was pretty much like Abby - direct, strong and not too mushy. Good to see Luka and Joe back on even if just for a minute. I would have hated to see her die and am glad that this show focused mainly on her. So long Abby - the ER will miss you!

The only thing about Abby leaving at this point that makes me sad is the whole unresolved Carter thing. I remember two seasons ago, whenever Luca went to Africa to see John, or John would call, she was adamant that he not know about the two of them getting married, having Joe etc. It would have been nice to have her farewell overlap with the return of Carter. I always liked Abby and Carter (Crabby?? Arter???) better than her and Luca at the beginning, but feel in love with Abby and Luca (Abuca?? Lubby?) near the end. Still a resolve here would have been nice.

I will never understand why the producers didn't throw some money at her and keep her around for the rest of the season.
I would have loved the final shot of this show to be her.
She's been the heart of this show the second she appeared so many years ago.

Tierney is leaving so near the end of ER ?? She has been the star for a long time now. What would the end of ER be without her? Even Wyle and Edwards are coming back. I love her but I think you owe to stick it out when the end is so close. Maybe she is coming back for an appearance.

I was a huge fan of this show from the first episode, with it's startling ending and great characters. But I must admit I grew tired of it several seasons ago for all the reasons detailed in the "Abby" bio. The fact that every character seemed to have to sleep with their co-workers, regardless of the consequences, got ridiculous. Don't they know anyone outside of work? Or maybe it was just a morality play since 90% of all the "drama" came from these sexcapades. Although I bet Ray still misses his legs...
