EW's Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert cover: Do you vote yea or nay?

Sep 25, 2008, 11:53 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Current Affairs, Politics as Entertainment, Strange Bedfellows

Stewartcolbercoverblog_l Back in July, when the New Yorker published Barry Blitt's notorious cover illustration of Barack and Michelle Obama living up to every negative stereotype about them that had been whispered by their opponents, a lot of readers (including the Obama campaign) complained that average folks who spotted the magazine on the newsstand wouldn't get the joke, that even to raise these stereotypes in order to debunk them was still to perpetuate them. Well, we at Entertainment Weekly imagine our readers to be smart enough to recognize satire and parody when they see them, which is why, for this week's cover story interview with Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, we had photographer Jake Chessum shoot this spoof of the New Yorker cover.

Were we right? Will folks get the joke and recognize what we're making fun of? In the article, Colbert and Stewart talk about how absurd spectacle has hijacked the election coverage; does our cover wittily satirize that phenomenon, or does it just add to the absurdity and make things worse? Was Blitt's illustration in bad taste, and does that make our lampoon more tasteful or more tasteless? It's all so confusing! Fortunately, as EW readers, your opinion really is the final arbiter here. Your vote does count! Exercise your right to free speech below. (Do keep it civil, please.)

It's good! rolex watch?
luxury watch?

Greg Cameron Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

The cover was hilarious. Colbert is Swift for the masses. Hey, Jon - no nasty attacks this time! Sometime when you say it's time for a moment of Zen, show a shot of a Japanese Zen rock garden throughout the exit music. Colbert recently had a classical musican on his show. How about it, Jon? Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this issue ? I really wanted to get it, and waited a little too long, and then it was gone. Please email

Obama's long history of close ties with anti-Americans has been termed by his opponents as displaying "bad choices", "bad decisions", "bad judgement". However, that is being WAY too kind and understated compared to what is more likely the case. Namely, that Obama SHARES the viewpoints, and even piles on to the anti-American philosophies, as those leftist, America-hating, cronies of his. Need or care at all for evidence? Just read his writings and books. Obama seems to despise vast portions of America. How disgusting is it of Obama's wife to declare she has only gained any respect toward America since, and because, her husband has become a political party's presidential candidate? How selfish and small-minded can one get? And you know Obama is just the same, of coarse. So is Aires. So is "Rev" Wright, and so is the bulk of ACORN leadership, and numerous other emembers of similar groups and of Birak Huessein's inn circles. So many Americans are not admitting to themselves, Obama's so bad

Bonnie Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

Saw this in the store the other day and just howled. People who don't get satire shouldn't vote.

Nat Stephenson Thu, Oct 9, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

The only problem with the New Yorker cover was not that it was in bad taste (it was a parody of people who actually believe such ignorant, bigotted ideals and misinformation) but that it was just plain old not funny. This parody of the parody is completely brilliant! It's hilarious! Who would have thought to do a parody of a parody? Stewart and Colbert are geniuses! Well done gentlemen!

vella Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

the fact that two of days most promiment satireists have come up to the plate to make a statement such as this is one that many of us need to sit back and laugh like hell at! If this is not to your liking or tastes then how dare you call your self american. in all seirousness i think there needs to be more people such as jon and steve.

Peter B. Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

Terrible - Racist - Un Funny White Guilt!

Tessa Colbert-Stewart Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

I LOVE IT.
Best cover I've seen in a long while.
The satire is definitely understood, and the message it sends across is very valid. And of course it combines two of my favorite people.
Entertainment Weekly has just been boosted in my mind away far far from trashy from this cover alone.

Dawnie Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

Honest to goodness, at first glance I thought Colbert was Sarah Jessica Parker in an afro wig! It took me a moment to compute!

Cyn522 Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

These are a few of my favorite things:EW, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert! Together at last! Favorite cover ever!! Great parody, thought provoking interview.

Martha Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

Great cover - I especially like Colbert's expression, which nails Michelle's look in the original cartoon. I also really enjoyed the interview - with their usual astuteness, Stewart and Colbert pinpoint precisely why I'm disgusted with both candidates and their parties these days.

Jack Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

Colbert is a one-trick (and one, tired, unfunny joke) pony. Stewart wants his cake and to eat it too. They both bore me.

Michael Martinello Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 10:54 AM EST

Sucked, how about someone has an original idea. I got the magazine, took a look at the cover and threw it out. Stop bothering me with this silly nonsense.

justjack Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

oh my doesn't Stephen make a pretty Afro princess! :)~

Laura D Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

bah ha ha ! I love the cover it's fantastic! I laugh every time I look at it.

HBSheila Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

Best EW cover ever and a perfect article for the times. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are the only way to tolerate news coverage of sound bites and opinions. The only thing I can get in my newspaper is and article on the surge of popularity in Palins' glasses!

What I would like to see is the Debates with Jon and Stephen doing commentary like the old B movie show with the two guys and the robot. Perfect!

Mel Jurgens Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

Brilliant! I saw this cover first on the Daily Show Web site, and could not WAIT to get my copy in the mail. It's going on my office wall. The original was offensive, but putting Jon and Stephen in those roles on your cover was spot on! As one who turns to their shows to temper what we see in the mainstream media, I couldn't turn to the article quickly enough. Add to this the Diablo Cody article on Judy Blume, and this is perhaps the BEST EDITION EVER!

Canuck Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

Kudos to Stewart and Colbert for keeping satire alive and well! Does being Republican mean that you have to give up your sense of humor? That can't be true because even McCain can laugh at himself, or he used to be able to. I thought that the original New Yorker cover was a brilliant unmasking of the ridiculous stereotypes many in the media were using to characterize Obama. It created a discussion intended to turn the stereotypes themselves into objects of mockery, not perpetuate the myth. In fact, to my mind, since the cover there has been less of this kind of criticism leveled at the Obamas, so maybe it worked. Both Stewart and Colbert use satire brilliantly as a most effective weapon against willful ignorance and prejudice. Bravo!

abp Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:39 PM EST

Oh, and for the record I'm a fervent Obama supporter.

abp Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

I'm framing it and putting it in my office, if that tells you anything..

Lou Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

Funny, but I notice you didn't dare put a flag in the fire. Who decided that? What was absured about the New Yorker controversy is that most of the people who objected would never have known about it had the news media not made such a big deal about it instead of covering real news. None of the people who objected understand satire, which always has a target. The target wasn't Obama and Michelle, as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert know better than anyone. So who's the target of this image? Watch out, it could be you! Good one, EW! In all ways as priceless as the original.

Xmasfreud Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

I want to vote for a Stewart/Colbert ticket. In America, our comedians are the smartest people, and our politicians are the dumbest. Or maybe the voters, who elect the politicians, are actually the dumbest.

Harvey Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Doesn't Jon Stewart look a little Ernest P. Worrellish in this picture? Also, Colbert's pose and expression pisses me off.

Sammail Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:38 PM EST

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Screw the OBVIOUS republican who drew that! VOTE OBAMA! BEOTCH!

Brainiac Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 09:57 PM EST

I agree that the New Yorker cartoon was offensive, and with so many idiots roaming around, not everyone would get their joke. But the Stewart/Colbert cover is pretty funny, and it doesn't leave as much room for misinterpretation. It really does work a lot better with two political "fundits".

esme Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 09:09 PM EST

sweetened condensed truthiness!!

TDS Lover Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:36 PM EST

Best EW cover ever. I love Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert - they are the late-night power of wit and news.

Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

The New Yorker cover did not come off as intended (I assume it was meant to be satire). The EW cover, given that it is two political comedians, works.

Orac Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

I think I should be your cover editor until the election...

A cabin in Alaska. John McCain in a rocking chair on the front porch. Caribou Barbie with a hunting rifle, dressed as Uncle Jimbo from "South Park" taking aim at Russian bombers. "They're coming right for us!"

Orac Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

Great cover, but next time you simpy *must* do McSame and Caribou Barbie, fiddling as Wall Street burns. Or swatting at Russian MiGs flying over the Aleutians. Take your pick.

Robert Morin Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

Absolutely hilarious!

HaHa!GOP! Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

Read this article. Hilarious!
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/26/palin-should-step-down-conservative-commentator-says/
Here's an excerpt: Prominent conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, an early supporter of Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin, said Friday recent interviews have shown the Alaska governor is "out of her league" and should leave the GOP presidential ticket for the good of the party. Palin's interview with Couric drew criticism when the Alaska governor was unable to provide an example of when John McCain had pushed for more regulation of Wall Street during his Senate career. Palin also took heat for defending her foreign policy credentials by suggesting Russian leaders enter Alaska airspace when they come to America. Palin was also criticized last week for appearing not to know what the Bush Doctrine is during an interview with Charlie Gibson. “If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself," Parker also writes.

Beau Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

thursday, my friend in norcal called me to tell me about the cover. we are both fans of those guys.I rushed to borders to buy a copy, but, it had been replaced by the new edition on the 9/26.oh well, I can always get a BACK EDITION!!thats the kind of cover that gets your attention, makes you tell others.....wonderful.

Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

It made me smile, but I wouldn't say I was laughing hysterically like all these others are saying.

Eliza Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

It's funny because you are making fun of The New Yorker, not the Obamas

Sarah Schoellkopf Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Love it!

Beth Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Best. EW cover. Ever.

stephenjunkie Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

I get it and wouldn't expect anything less from Jon and Stephen.

aaearhart Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

Appropriate, funny and topical. Cheers. But be careful dipping your ink in the political well. You'll never know who starts taking you too seriously.

NYCer Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

Just got the mail and got this issue. Laughed all the way to my apt. Cant't wait to read the interview.

Mark Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

I'm outraged. The eagle on the carpet in the original picture was HUGE, bursting from it's confines on the floor. It was full of confidence, a symbol of American power, and John McCain's heroism.

In comparison, your version shows a tiny, restrained, dare I say bashful eagle.

The Terrorist have won. Shame on you.

-Oh, and btw, Colbert makes a pretty hot Michelle Obama, with bigger hips...

Andre' Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

This is tired now, having already been done. It would have been a lot more entertaining to me if they would have made satire of McCain and Palin for this one.

VirtualVal Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

I've never purchased (nor even read) Entertainment Weekly but with this satire I'm an instant fan. I'm rushing out today to get a copy. I'm dying to read Colbert and Stewart's take on the trivialization of our electoral process. That's worth whatever the newsstand price and I hope other publications take note.

tiger Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

absolutely one of the best images to have graced my two eyes in my short 18 years of existence! hilarious! I give it my unhindered approval!

bakerboy Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

where's the burning flag? Or is my screen too small to see it?

Andrea Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Sorry- have to add more. Yes of course it adds to the absurdity. the whole election is absurd. The wrong people are running, and voters are voting for all the wrong reasons. The only thing left to do is laugh.

Andrea Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

LOVED IT. Those two are awesome.

tracey Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

Without a doubt... FUNNY

maria Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

I think it's one of the best magazine cover concepts I have seen in years.

thecookie Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

Major Yea!
http://lifeisacookie.wordpress.com/2008/09/26/mock-the-vote/

SoG Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 09:24 AM EST

Yea.Hell Yea. Stewart and Col-bear are awesome. Hell-a Awesome. They should have their own moniker - stewbert, anyone?

FM Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

The initial controversy was valid becasue it depicted, without approval, a presidential nominee in an unapealing light that could, theoretically, influence uneducated voters.

This cover depicts a pair of willing comedians making fun of a controversy. This is just humor, there is nothing wrong with this.

I believe that anyone who thinks otherwise is simply looking for an excuse to fight.

Jenn Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

I laughed so hard when I saw the cover. The interview with Stewart and Colbert inside was great too!

mjade27 Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

As much as I love SC and JS, I think this particular idea is a little tardy (relative to the initial cover).
Also, the sad truth is that there are too many people out there that will not "get it", and shall willfully interpret it in the opposite way in which it is intended - and those people vote.

JackSparrow228 Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

EW, why no pig wearing lipstick in the photo? What, you're against taking some creative license with your covers?

JeriKratzhole Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

The problem with satires like this is not that the majority of people get that it's a satire, it's that the lunatic fringe whackadoo McCain supporters use stuff like this as fuel for their fire of going around saying BS like Obama's a Muslim terrorist. And believe me, I know people who think that way. They blast Bill Clinton for his Lewinsky scandal, but laud McCain for his three affairs after his first wife's accident, and think that his marrying Cindy makes him awesome cause "at least he married money!"

Kevin Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:19 AM EST

Meh...I doesn't really bother me. Actually, it's kind of funny. But then again, my Democrat mom STILL thinks he's Muslim, so maybe it's not that funny. Sad truth is, if you tune into more conservative voices like Fox, Rush, or Hannity, they are STILL dropping subtle little hints linking Obama to Islam. That's very scary. Otherwise, LOVE Jon and Stephen and the cover did get a smile from me...especially that face on Jon Stewart.

lilkunta Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

Blitt/New Yorker was wrong butnnow that they've done it 1st & it has been xplained ad nauseaum, it makes this EW cover ok bc ppl get it.

GingerCat Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 08:10 AM EST

Funny. Love it. Thanks for injecting a little levity into the proceedings.

Simba Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:42 AM EST

It's not funny !! How come the American flag is missing form the fireplace? Is it ok to satirize Obama with the American flag burning but its not ok to do the same with The two comedians ? Why ? Racism stills abounds in this great country !!

lynx765 Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:38 AM EST

i think its hilarious! Why not? this is so them. Obama '08

Mr. Williams Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:25 AM EST

I LOVE THIS COVER!!! Once I'm done reading my suscribed issue, I'm going to have it framed and placed on the wall in my entertainment room. I never understood why so many people were ANGRY over this image when it first appeared on The New Yorker - it's just Political Satire ladies & gentlemen, GET OVER IT!!! Some people complain & gripe ABOUT THE DUMBEST THINGS!!! Thanks for the cover EW.

tommy Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 07:24 AM EST

Just reinforces my decision to stay away from the Democratic Party.

jamiek Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 06:49 AM EST

Just seems like the joke is really old. Had you guys done the cover the next week, it would have had more relevance

skeve Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 04:57 AM EST

It's okay....and Palin has nice pillows.

ann Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 12:53 AM EST

It's funny I guess. But I'm really sick of hearing about this election constantly. Even the Emmy's were political.

Casey Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 12:28 AM EST

Thanks for the cover. Very clever.

heather Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 11:35 PM EST

Wicked! I love it!

Sean Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

Love it

Jo Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 09:07 PM EST

The cover is great! Stewart and Colbert are amazing! And if somehow people (the clueless people who live under a rock) still don't get the joke, it says "this crazy election" right there.

CC Colbert Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

I love the cover, and the pictures inside I must get a copy.

Justina Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 07:38 PM EST

Hahaha, Jon and Stephen is love. Colbert looks good in the afro, ha.

227 Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

The best cover since The Dixie Chicks.

Dawn Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

Love it. And thank you for addressing the election so those of us that prefer EW to news magazines are made more aware.

yssys Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

LOL so funny please do it!!!!

joze! Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

I love it!

LT Goto Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

Will you kindly mail my co-worker a replacement issue? Someone stole hers.

BrandonK Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

I couldn't believe how ridiculously everything was blown out of proportion regarding the original cover, and I like the new EW one. Anything that encourages people to get the joke and/or learn the truth about these poisonous rumors is fine with me. I simply cannot believe how many times I've heard and read people saying something like "I heard he's a Muslim." Come on, people!

donner Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

those guys can do no wrong...loves it...

Irving 143 Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 05:51 PM EST

I'm sorry, but Colbert in the uber-afro just looks so like Harold Ramis in his civie 'do in "Stripes" that I want Steward to look like Bill Murray...except he doesn't! What's up with that?

Kurt Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

Best. Cover. Ever.

Murderpuss Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

I'll take a closer look when my subscription copy finally arrives sometime around next week Tuesday.

Truthinista Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

Thanks for sticking it to all the folks who went ape-s%&t over the original New Yorker cover. I could think of no two people who are better suited to do something like this. Well done!

Cobbo Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Can we move on? It's a month later and EW can't think of anything else to do?

Raven_Moon Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

I think it's pretty funny.

mehere Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

Your cover is hilarious and clearly conveys the send-up ...a great re-creation of a poor original idea - yeah lol

dan Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

While I have nothing against this in principle, I think it's pathetic that EW is so desperately trying to court controversy (look, the NY got a huge publicity bump from this picture so we're going to try and cash in!!!!). Guess your actual "content" isn't moving issues off the stands, eh? Not surprising.

t3hdow Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

I have to agree with everyone else on the great cover EW produced. Kudos. Give yourselves a pat on the back.
To Patty:
I always received my EW issues in the mail on either Friday or Saturday (and on rare occasions, Monday).

Sina Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Dkan71--What do you mean you might lose your Black card? Black people love Stephen Colbert, me being one of them. Jon Stewart also. Comedy and truth has no color.

M Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Where is the burning american flag in the fireplace?

CVisca Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

I first of all love that you've asked whether this cover gets the message across or not.

If people don't get it and don't like it - they are the ones who need to take the time to become better informed - they are the people Colbert/Stewart are making fun of, and they need to realize it. And leave the burning flag out of it, keep the pic as is, even if it was in the original.

Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

Bloody fantastic. I vote YEA.

Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

I vote YAY!

Cheryl Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

This is awesome! In addition to my subscription copy I am getting 20 copies of it. Brilliant and I can't think of two more perfect guys to do it.

Dkan71 Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

I might lose my black card on account of this, but I LOOOVEE it! Is Stephen Colbert not the funniest guy on the planet? And he's black Irish, so maybe I'm ok.

Rev. O.J. Flow Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

I'd like my 10 copies with this cover NOW, please. Thanks.

Zet Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:29 PM EST

Go for it!

Michael Hoskins Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

Though I wasn't too impressed with waifish Anne Hathaway last week, this cover is 100% genius. Please go forward with this!
