Bruce Springsteen: Your 2009 Super Bowl halftime entertainer

Sep 29, 2008, 11:28 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Music, Sports, To Care or Not to Care

Brucespringsteen_l As a bigger music fan than football fan, I wish I could say that Bruce Springsteen is bigger than the Super Bowl, that he should have better things to do than play a hasty 12-minute medley of his hits, as a sideshow to a sporting event, for an audience that didn't show up just to see him. But the truth is, he's not, and after the likes of the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Prince, Tom Petty, U2, and others have paved the way, there's no way Springsteen can say he's above performing at this winter's Superbowl halftime show. Besides, according to the NFL, which confirmed on Sunday night the long-standing rumor that Springsteen will be the 2009 Super Bowl halftime entertainer, some 148 million Americans watched last year's halftime mini-show. Who could turn down an opportunity to play for an audience that big, even for just 12 minutes?

Still, I'm already wondering who they'll book for 2010. The list of all-American (or British-but-America-loving) classic-rock icons who are still as popular as Springsteen or McCartney or Petty who haven't already done the show is slim to nonexistent. (My colleague Michael Slezak suggested Madonna, but after the 2004 Janet Jackson incident, I doubt the NFL will go anywhere near someone who might risk a wardrobe malfunction.) Who else is there, PopWatchers? What do you think of Springsteen landing the gig? And which 12 minutes of music should he use to summarize his 36-year recording career?

TG Rondo Thu, Feb 5, 2009 at 12:15 AM EST

I’m a 53 yr. Old male and a musician. I love all kinds of music. Springsteen has some great songs... But the half time show Sucked!!! In my opinion, all the Super Bowl half time shows have sucked... Big Green Donkey Weenies!!!!!
What I don’t understand is why the people who produce the Super Bowl think it’s necessary to abuse us for 10 or 12 minutes with the overblown, over-produced, frenzied, crap-fest that is the Super Bowl Half Time Show????
And no matter who plays this thing in the future; be it old geezer rockers who smell of Ben-Gay and Bourbon... Young, new artistic bands covered with tattoos and piercings... Gangster rappers complete with Ho' dancers... It’ll be the same Hurry-up-gimme-every-song-you-know-every-dance-step-you-do-with-fireworks-10 minute crap-a-thon it always is!!!!
I’ve got an idea... Bring back the Marching Bands!!!!!

J Wed, Feb 4, 2009 at 07:53 PM EST

all the haters are lame just becuase you dont know any of his stuff botx comments and stuff yer right bruce has so many songs and to fit 4 into 12mins meant cutting versus out etc hes amazing and for a guy of almost 60 to keep it going all this time is remarkable just see how many off these 'pop' groups and boybands keep going that long for the love and enjoyment of what they do also he can play the guitar how do you think he starte dplus teaching himself but with the band he doesnt need to take the lead stevees there for that
BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE ON EARTH!

Bob Wed, Feb 4, 2009 at 05:45 PM EST

I thought the Boss was just an employee of the all mighty buck Sunday night. Does he even know how to play the guitar? I don't think he even played a chord...the other (all 4) guitar players were playing for him....He was a disgrace to all guitar players and entertainers. Too old to act that way, other than his voice, he sucked!!

mike & vic Wed, Feb 4, 2009 at 03:41 PM EST

Not too sure just how many warm beers all "ewe" nay's had sunday night, or was it in the bad guacamole dip, but i've seen most half time shows and not soo much about the games. The Boss was great. I felt bad that i wasnt there to enjoy it live. Just because your bet didnt cover the spread, i'd be ashamed to blame it on the entertainment.

link Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 07:48 PM EST

Bruce performing on the half time show was not atrocious because of his voice or age. It was difficult to watch because it went against what the man has been singing out against for the last 20 years. Corporate schlock, Disney shout outs and hokey points to the camera asking us to put our chicken fingers down......HUH?. My job of convincing people that Bruce is "cool" was given the pink slip Sunday night. Between this and the WalMart deal someone should fire the Boss , or at least his boss.

slipman bose Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 02:50 PM EST

Yes, possibly one of the worst half-times shows ever, which concluded with a dirty, lowly, cheap and sundry Disneyworld sellout--Shame, Shame, SHAME on you 'Boss' for that sell out! Honestly. I am not such a big fan anymore. What a tawdry thing to do!

SAL Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 01:53 PM EST

TWO WORDS FOR YOU "IT SUCKED"

pete Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 02:07 AM EST

The show was awful!!!!
I was a fan of his in the 80s, but that was 20 years ago.
Now, he sounds awful and looks even worse. Just b/c his songs were good back then, doesn't mean he should sing them now.
Michael Jackson was great in the 80s too, but that doesn't mean that he should perform live now.

Paul McCartney put on a great show a few years ago and he still sounds good.

One more thing... Why would Bruce yell "I'm going to Disneyland" when Disney World was an hour away? Anything for a buck, I guess.

chris Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 09:01 PM EST

Deb- This child knows the lyrics and I think that's the exact reason why he should've played the song?

Sue Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 06:29 PM EST

I think Bruce did a great job and enjoyed the show. Sorry those who don''t really know him and his music didn't enjoy it. Yes, he is older but having him sing those songs really brought back memories. And, I chuckled when he changed the lyrics of Glory Days to talk about football instead of baseball... I'm sure you who don't know and enjoy his music missed that.. We love you and your music Bruce!

Curtis Rowe Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 05:01 PM EST

halftime sucked as usual, out of shape has been, no talent, too much botox, running around and so out of breath he couldn't even mumble the words.

M Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 04:25 PM EST

WORST HALFTIME EVER!

ed sargent Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 04:01 PM EST

That was by far the best halftime show ever!

Roger G. Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 02:25 PM EST

Shame on Bruce who sings about cars and racing all his life and then does a show pertaining to a game he doesn't even like.
Should have saved it for two weeks and played at the Daytona 500 on the 15th where the real car people are and where All American Bruce belongs with all his great songs that we grew listing to.

God Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 01:48 PM EST

The BOSS was at a LOSS for a voice. Probably the worst Super Bowl half-time musical performance of all time!!! The man can no longer carry a tune...it was truly a sad sight...I saw Springsteen back in the late 70s and early 80s... now, that was the stuff the legend is made from, not what millions saw at half-time. All he did was show us that age can be cruel to most rock stars, with the rare exceptions (of which, he is not one). He may be able to still write-em...but man-o-man...he can no longer sing em. The BOSS is now a Grumpy old man...and he acts like one as well...too bad.

Very Lame!

Tracy Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 01:20 PM EST

Thought it was great! Nobody was half naked, dancing nasty and lip syncing singing nasty lyrics. Unfortunately the younger generation doesn't see the it this way.

Dalton Priddy Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 01:01 PM EST

What do Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles, Garth Brooks, Guns and Roses, Irving Azoff have in common?
They share the same disgraced stage with others who have denied every small music retailer on the planet the opportunity to make a little profit from there music. With exclusive deals being made to Wal-Mart, they have axed off the hand that once feed them. The small music store was the force behind the early success of these artist, the small mom and pop and small chain created the spirit and distribution outlet by which all these artist careers were launched. I find it a slap in the face to all the smaller music stores that are closing there doors because of these exclusive deals to The Wal-Marts. Monopoly is the not what a free society is about. Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles and other Wal-Mart Artists, who have written songs and staged concerts for human rights now sell songs exclusively to the biggest chain on the planet. Where is the little guy Bruce?.

Ted Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 12:38 PM EST

Jayne Glenn, get a hearing aide. Bruce is way past prime and so are you if you think that was good ROCK! Loser go relive your glory days with a tape, but don't tell us that a cat cry is great Rock n Roll.

SB watcher Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 12:36 PM EST

Um...the "Boss" of what? Hits from the 1980's? Oh wait, maybe it's the 'boss' of shouting - not singing - into the microphone, back-n-forth with one of the four (or more?) other people playing guitars needlessly. L-o-v-e the fake posturing/grimacing as though the parts are hard to play, although you've played these same songs hundreds of times. Add a black gospel choir in robes for instant 'cred'. Whatever.

JAYNE GLENN Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 12:17 PM EST

BRUCE IS A CLASSIC, JUST LIKE CLASSIC OLD CARS AND CLOTHES THEY NEVER EVER GO OUT OF STYLE AND ARE ALWAYS BETTER THAN THE NEW........
YOU WERE LISTENING TO THE ( BOSS! )
LAST NIGHT, IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN EAR FOR REALLY GOOD CLASSIC ROCK IN ROLL... KEEP YOUR CLUELESS COMMENTS TO YOURSELF!. LOVED!!! BABY WE WERE BORN TO RUN!!!! BRUCE NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE, HE KEEPS ON NEVER GOING OUT OF STYLE, LIKE THE OTHER HERE TODAY , GONE TOMORROW SINGERS/BANDS!!

teri Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 12:01 PM EST

are you kidding me bruce is great. he has more energy than some 30 year old guys. as for the fat guy's comment, some of us (including Bruce) keep fit in middle age. That red headed woman is his wife.

Al Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 10:53 AM EST

It's really sad...I'm an old, fat, grey haired guy and to see another old, fat, (probably) grey haired guy try to recapture his former "glory"...well, it's just sad. He can't sing, he certainly can't dance...and there was one point when a production mic actually caught the sound coming from his guitar...and what was eminating from the guitar didn't sound like any music I've ever heard. That had to be about the worst halftime show I've ever had the misfortune of witnessing. Jennifer Hudson, though, was the bomb!!

Seth Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 10:46 AM EST

Hey Deb, don't judge a whole generation passed on a few individuals. Especially after a certain president used this politically charged song to represent his campaign. Oh, and I'm from that generation your bashing. Find a history lesson in that.

deb Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 09:16 AM EST

for all of the "children" who wondered why Bruce didn't perform "Born in the USA"......perhaps if you google the lyrics you may find a history lesson available.....omg the ignorance of this generation...for God sake learn how to listen and learn how to read!!

brad Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 05:23 AM EST

barf barf, oh my god. could that have been any worse. i used to like bruce back in the 70s and 80s. saw him back then and was great. i actualy felt sorry for him, it was like a bad hotel bar act. please quit bruce, before i go into that bar for a drink and have to see that again.

donna o Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 04:44 AM EST

Yeh, I vote for Jimmy Buffett next time......

GovBlago Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 04:15 AM EST

Worst. Halftime show. Ever. What's up for next year? Yanni's tribute to Lawrence Welk?

Tyler (23) Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 04:10 AM EST

Though I've never been a fan, Bruce Springsteen rocked --- as always. Personally, I'm glad the NFL has completely neglected the hardly talented musicians, rappers and singers of today who couldn't even handle a venue of such extravagant size; nobody wants to hear lip syncing, layered vocals and an instrumental track running in the back ground, not to mention, meaningless back up dancers and costume changes --- I'll stick with the legends, such as The Stones and Paul McCartney.

SD Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 03:42 AM EST

Dear NFL:

You may want to consider getting someone other than a geriatric to perform during the biggest game of the year!

Sincerely,

Janet Jackson

Brian Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 02:54 AM EST

Halftime Show this year SUCKED!. I am 40 and know all about Bruce. I know he is in the Rockin Roll Hall of Fame but dude is going to be 60 this year. He needs to just go back to the Rockin Chair. Thank god for a great game though I was hoping for a Arizona win it was a great catch in the End Zone by Holmes. NFL needs to get a better more up to date talent for next year. Oh by the way his new CD was just released on Tuesday at Wal-Mart.

Dori Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 01:55 AM EST

what is wrong with you people, i didnt see it but just by reading the comments here i cant but smile a little. these half time shows arent realy for these artist to play their lesser know material(wich is often better), its all about the hits because most of the people there arent music fans, it must be a bands that everyone knows about. and the BOSS is many times better then Madonna or Jay-Z, much better musician. and i think Pearl Jam would never do anything like this.

MAT Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 01:38 AM EST

Bruce is the boss...and always will be.. he is still amazing... and 12 mins.. this man has a deep sincere soul.. God Bless Bruce!!God Bless America!!.. Mary

ed Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 12:24 AM EST

halftime show was part or d recession?could not afford someone worth for such a great game? this wasn't hall of seniors or pig bowl; they should it make it + interesting by + actual superstar; springsteen days r OVER.

jabbahjaw Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 12:24 AM EST

HE FRIGGIN TEA BAGGED THE CAMERA GUY!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS WAS, QUIET POSSIBLY THE GREATEST COMEDIC PERFORMANCE IN THE HISTORY OF SUPERBOWL HALFTIME SHOWS

dugger Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 12:05 AM EST

Old enough to have seen the Boss through his glory days and this halftime show was not it. Did nobody else notice that he was out of tune and ran out of steam after the first song??? Quite frankly, never did understand the whole Bruce fanatacism? Even his hits were never really that good.

northwestburbs Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 12:00 AM EST

diana ross was the best and only BOSS

aa Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 11:41 PM EST

how about stevie wonder? if we're going for american legends he definitely qualifies. also wouldn't mind madonna or jay-z.

Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 11:25 PM EST

How exactly do you classify a "hit"? If you somehow consider that performance as boring or think Bruce is living in the past, try getting a ticket to one of his shows tomorrow. You will be in line behind at least a million other people.

dan Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 11:25 PM EST

As an Aussie, I definitely vote for ACDC, especially with the huge success of their recent album, they would be awesome.
I don't always get to see the performances due to time diff etc, but Tom Petty last yr was pretty awesome.
Not sure if they've done it before, but Bon Jovi would totally rock. And I would always say yes to U2 no matter how many times they've played before.
What about John Mayer...?
(I wish Pearl Jam were still around to do it...*sigh*)

Mike Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 11:12 PM EST

Amazing halftime show...the best I've ever seen. Springsteen has stood the test of time, he has been making music since 1973. I enjoy many different types of music and can appreciate the new stuff that is out there. But how many of these artists will still have the fan base after 35 years? Springsteen was an excellent choice for a halftime show. Let's hope for Mellencamp next year!

Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 11:09 PM EST

my bad i meant "living in the past, PERIOD"

Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 11:05 PM EST

what do you mean 80's one hit wonders Metallica was awesome and there still pretty good, ozzy is just one of musics legends, and ac-dc, well i guess they are a one hit wonder considering all there music sounds the same, but its better than bruce springsteen he doesn't even have one hit, except maybe born in the usa, he is a boring old man who is living in the pass period

billybob81 Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 11:01 PM EST

Any of you nerds who didn't like that halftime show need to take the cotton out of your ears.

Bruce still Rocks. Period.

Mirillie Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 10:54 PM EST

Some 80's one hit wonders. If it is only 12 minutes, you can get three performers/groups to do their one hit. It would be better than trying to condense an artist with tons of hits into 12 minutes. Just a thought.

Teri in AZ Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 10:48 PM EST

Bruce and the E Street Band will ALWAYS be the BOSS... don't disrespect royalty... please.

kevin s Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 10:46 PM EST

scott, im 13 and i think 3 Doors Down, Green Day, and Nickleback suck i know there not i iconic, the stones were cool and tommy petty was better than bruce, but personally they need to bring in
Metallica
AC-DC
Ozzy Osbourne...
now there iconic

Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 10:39 PM EST

yea lets call it a night i don't need to try and convince people that he did a sucky job at the half time, he showed everyone himself, and im sure most people think that he did a bad job to, he just needs to understand that hes not "The Boss"(or whatever old people call him anymore) he needs to move on and get out of the past.

Kaiily Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 10:39 PM EST

PATTI LABELLE FOR 2010!

G.C. Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 10:34 PM EST

Did you notice... Bruce didn't sing
His #1 hit "Born in the USA"
I guess he didn't want to hurt Obama's feelings!

Scott Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 10:33 PM EST

So...young folks....who exactly is worthy to play instead of Bruce, Stones, Paul, Tom, etc.? 3 Doors Down? Green Day? Nickleback? Great bands, but hardly iconic. Bruce was totally on his game tonight and I'd like to see you do his moves when you are 59...it won't happen...too much xBox when you were/are growning up.

Teri in AZ Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 10:14 PM EST

This has been fun guys. My heart is broken right now... All in fun.

Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 10:10 PM EST

i agree with gary you are a pansie, and so are you Teri in AZ, and i never said i liked adam sandlers singing over bruce's, although thats true. But adam sandler could have scraped his finger nails against a chalk board and it would have sounded better, bruce sounded like a pregnant whale giving birth.

Gary Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:57 PM EST

Billy -- you're a pansy

Teri in AZ Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:56 PM EST

Billy - you said it all. Hey, Kevin likes Adam Sandler's singing over Bruce - nuff said...

Billy P Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:54 PM EST

Relax Juvies. Maybe Akon or Kanye can be on next year with their lame a$$ 16 beat loops and canned vocals. Maybe Kanye can do the same "Song" he massacred on Saturday Night Live. Maybe Boosie or Joc can come on and talk about going to the strip club and dropping money on hoes. Maybe next year you guys can have the music that is so lame that any bar band can duplicate it with a 100 dollar sampler. Springsteen inspired a generation of music fans without any references to riding in an Escalade, pimpin' or going to a strip club. None of the so called "stars" of today can even come close.

kevin s Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:45 PM EST

adam sandlers awesome, maybe he should have performed instead of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

Teri in AZ Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:43 PM EST

Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:40 PM EST

mike one more comment like that and I will strangle you with my microphone wire!

kevin s Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:37 PM EST

Chuck - Amen!

Teri in AZ Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:35 PM EST

Bruce and the E Street Band were incredible ~ I wish I was there. Thank you for bringing class back to the half-time entertainment. At least he did't whip out his boob to distract from lack of talent. I love you Bruce!!!! Go Cards!!!!

Chuck Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:32 PM EST

This was easily the best halftime show that i've seen. No big ego trip or phony posturing, mugging, preening or other BS. Just the the pure enthusiastic joy that IS rock n' roll.

mike Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:30 PM EST

Kevin S your comment is one of the most ignorant things I have ever read. I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul

DavidA Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:26 PM EST

It was OK. Nothing special. U2's halftime show a few years ago blew this one away!

Josh Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:25 PM EST

Such a disappointing show.

BOOO!!!!

Regina from NJ Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:21 PM EST

I grew up w/Bruce. He's old but a classic Jersey shore rocker. Give him his day. This should be his last stand! It's sad to get old...

freakie Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:18 PM EST

lip sinking at its finest ....please spare me the American crap called music.

Lori Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:16 PM EST

G-Man,

I'm sure your taste in music is as classy as your need to insult someone. No fewer than a dozen people making comments mentioned Coldplay. Why pick on me? Pick on all the people who have made their albums go double-platinum or on the people who have nominated them for seven grammy awards -- just proof that taste in music isn't mine alone!!

Kristen Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:16 PM EST

okay, I can't believe no one is talking about this....
did no one else see when Bruce slid crotch first into the cameraman? Probably the best moment of the whole show.

kevin s Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:16 PM EST

hey "bren" im a kid and i know the world doesnt revolve around me were just thinking of all the people who had to watch that crap. they need new entertainers or older ones who don't suck like bruce, and i dont need to be old like u to understand that he suck and he was probably the worst halftime performer in the history of the superbowl, any one could have figured that, bring in metallica, ac-dc, bon jovi, there old but there still good. so why don't u do me a favor and fall in a hole with bruce springsteen and u can get your groove on with him for the remainder of your pityful life

Bruce Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 09:15 PM EST

Ok this halftime show totally SUCKED!! They could have picked someone better that would have pumped everyone up. I am very disappointed.... they need to stick with some kind of pop! Not to mention he got a nut check as he slide into the camera! Well anyway back to watchin the game! GO STEELERS!!

What's up with the negative comments?
Springsteen epitomizes Rock & Roll.
Appreciate it.
Am sure members of the bands you mentioned on this post would agree.
We 'old people' have total respect for today's music & enjoy it every day.
Chili Peppers - Coldplay - Bon Jovi - AC/DC...all great & awesome!
C'mon - rock n roll evolves and if you're a true rocker...you'll embrace and understand.

If people are using the half time show for a bathroom break, then keep hiring old farts to sing with their crappy vocals.

How about about a Bruce vs Bruce contest?

The BEST half time show I've ever seen!

That halftime sucked. Whoever is in charge of NFL halftime shows needs to be fired.

Bruce did rock on! I agree with the folks over 40. I not only grew up listening to rock, but especially Bruce! I agree with Glen; HE IS NOT CALLED THE BOSS FOR NOTHING. He deserves this title. Go New Jersey; Proud to be from there! Proud to rock on with Bruce and the E street band!

Joe Sun, Feb 1, 2009 at 08:49 PM EST

What's really embarrasing is that they don't realize they aren't cool. Totally crappy show! Bring in some young blood!!

Bruce is way passed washed up and EMBARASSED HIMSELF in front of millions of people. The fake crowd noise was obviously electronically added by NBC. I used to love Bruce when I was in High School in the early 80's. He just SHAMED HIMSELF for millions of people.
