'The Soloist': Iron Man and Ray Charles Team Up...to Make You Cry

Sep 11, 2008, 12:57 PM | by Marc Bernardin

Categories: Film, Movie Trailers

As previously stated, I love trailers. I am also a bit of a sap. So when you combine the two—and place before me a spot for a movie like The Soloist (with Robert Downey Jr. as a down-on-his-luck journalist who comes across Jamie Foxx's mentally impaired homeless man who's also a classically trained musician)—don't stand anywhere near me unless you want to be irrigated. (My wife actually thought something was wrong when we saw the trailer for The Pursuit of Happyness.)

The thing of it is, I know I'm being manipulated. I know that this trailer pushing my emotional buttons with all the subtlety of a four-year-old hammering at a See and Say. I know all of that, and I don't care. Give me Downey Jr. punching at the air in anger...and Foxx's sad, browless eyes looking hurt...and Catherine Keener looking radiantly supportive...and Downey's narration about what it means to be a friend.

Give me all of that, and you've got yourself an arse in the seat. Are you in, or are you out?

I honestly do not even care what the movie is rated, I am bound and determined to see it.

I love the concept of the story line in this movie an cannot wait to hear more about it. :)

I think this looks good, but the trailer is pretty crappy. The sound mix is way off. I could barely hear any talking. Whoever cut this hackjob should be fired!

Oh, i don't care. This is the first trailer ever that made me cry. It's ridiculous. I'm so in. Not to mention RDJ's genius. There's nothing this brilliant man can't do.

Laura M. Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

Raven_Moon Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

It does look pretty sappy, still I'm in.

Josh Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

People are already joking about Downey doing this movie immediately after his "never go full retard" speech in Tropic Thunder. I don't care AT ALL. I got goosebumps from the trailer and I've already ordered the book it's based on from Amazon.

Candy Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

I'm in!

Greg Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

Are you kidding? The second they said "Atonement" and "Pride and Prejudice" I was in.

Rachel K Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

I'm so totally in

Ceballos Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

I mean, you warned me about how sappy the trailer was and I should've been ready, but the part towards the end with Downey talking about what it means to be a friend TOTALLY got me. I'm such a major sap and I don't care.

Jackie Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

Totally and completely being manipulated, and I don't care either! And I don't get emotional (or chills) really in trailers for emotional movies like this (unless there is someone British....than I bawl), but WOW. WOWOWOWOWOW. I'm totally going to see it, and I'm totally going to cry. And all because of RDJ. Damnit.
