Madonna's politically charged tour video: Is it any good?

Sep 19, 2008, 09:19 AM | by Adam Markovitz

Categories: Madonna, Music, Politics as Entertainment

With all the recent furor over her (alleged) new face, (alleged) affair, and (alleged, we say!) marital problems, we almost forgot why Madonna became such a media target in the first place: The lady likes to push buttons. Political, sexual, spiritual, you name it; Madge has a long history of stirring the pot in her quest for artistic expression, social justice, and—let’s be honest here—plain old attention. So really, was anyone surprised by the news that her Sticky and Sweet Tour contains an incendiary video montage that links John McCain to Kim Jong Il and Hitler, while buddying Barack Obama with the Dalai Lama? The move is vintage Madge, a throwback to the feisty Italian-American girl of yore who supposedly told the Pope that if he wanted an audience with her, he could buy a ticket to her show. We loved that Madonna and we love her still, but it looks like age hasn’t made her any more eloquent. The stab at McCain (which found its way to YouTube this week) is about as clumsy as they come, and its nutty implications show a Madge who is less concerned about substance than shock value; otherwise we might be seeing something here that looks a little more like video art and a little less like a YouTube mashup made by an angsty armchair pundit.

What do you think PopWatchers? Is Madge’s video an edgy statement or just a cry for attention? And isn’t all the political junk just a smokescreen for the video’s real message that monocles are totally hot?

If Obama was white, he would not have gotten this far with so little experience or credibility. Being a half-Black man has helped him shield himself from any criticism that any other politician would get. If the wife of a white candidate said, "For the first time in my adult life, I'm proud to be American", right after her husband took the lead, it would be enough to ruin his chances. If a white candidate sat in a racist, anti-American, anti-Semitic church for 20 years, he would be irrelevent. If a white candidate had only 1 year of national service before running for president, he would be laughed at. Obama used the race-card & sexism against Clinton. He admits to smoking crack & was accused of doing it while in the Illinois State Senate. Obama claims as his credential being head of the Harvard Law Review but is the only head of it that NEVER published a single piece. http://www.salepuma.com

It's good! rolex watch?
luxury watch?

klynch Thu, Nov 6, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

It makes me sad that I've paid the price for her ticket this weekend. I've waited a long time to see her.

Greg Tue, Oct 7, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

To equate Oprah, Bono, and Bill Gates to Gandhi and Mother Theresa is truly a sin... these people gave everything....

Davy Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 12:25 AM EST

Rich! Wow you totally were in my head! The entire system is corrupted and it doesn't matter what side of the aisle they are on. Both these parties are essentially the same. And they only have two at all to lull people into thinking there is a choice when there is none! They probably agree on who is going to win b4 they even start campaigning. Now having said that I do like some of Madonna's songs... LOL

Andy Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

She can "say" whatever she wants to. If this is what she believes in, why not? You can only agree or disagree. The fact that you made your comment only shows her importance in nowadays.

Peter Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

I think all the hurt feelings over Madonna's video is stupid; She doesn't compare Hitler with McCain and those who think so are narrow-minded and shallow -- she's comparing the right-wing agenda to facism. My god, it's so obvious if you look at the video as a whole --

And even if she was comparing the two - so what? She sees the deaths of Iraqi citizens as lamentable as those of any other victims of genocide - McCain's support for the Iraq war makes him complacent.

Rich Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

(from previous) that neither Obama, nor McCain, nor Clinton and especially not Bush give a crap about any of us. They are there for the money, prestige and ego and that's it! None of them are going to do anything to make middle class America or the poor have better lives... duh! When are people going to learn from the lies the government has been telling us for decades? We are just pawns to them and that's the way it is! And don't telling me voting works, because they just fix the election if they need to...Bush did it twice.

Rich Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

To everyone who says that Madonna was not directly comparing McCain to Hitler, you're lying to yourselves or you're just too busy worrying about whether she "looks good" or not. Go turn on Entertainment Tonight to find out who's got Britney's kids this week or something and leave intelligent, political opinions to those who aren't so easily distracted by who looks good and who doesn't.

You can't tell me that she didn't purposely throw pictures of several evil leaders up on the video screen and just accidentally throw up a picture of McCain along with them. You can't tell me that she shows pics of all of these peaceful, good men like Lennon and Ghandi and then throw Obama's pic in there for kicks. Her intention was to say that McCain leading the country is like having an evil dictator run the country and Obama running the country means peace and happy times for all. Gag me with that rhetoric!

I'd like to know when Americans are finally going to get it through their heads...

Jeepers66 Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

Sad to see a 50-year woman so desperate for attention... This video is comical, if nothing else. And, that new face - unfortunately, you can't un-fry things.

Rich Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

(from previous) Hitler and both of them wish they could be as spiritual, intelligent, wise and kind as Ghandi and the like. For Madonna to compare McCain to Hitler is idiotic and heinous.

It's sad that she would compare him to a outright genecidal murderer in her typical liberal attempt to make all Republicans look like they are Satan himself.

I'm no fan of most Republican views either, but liberals go way too far and their comparisons and thought processes are generally over emotional and ridiculous. In fact, it's that kind of propaganda that led to the Nazi's taking power back then. Nuff said.

Rich Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

Let me start off that I am a MAJOR Madonna fan. I've loved her since I was a teenager and I'm sure I always will. In general, I find her music, videos and concerts are usually intelligent and pretty well done.

All of that being said, the point here folks is that comparing a former prisoner of war who fought for this country to a disgusting Nazi leader is rude, overexaggerated, disrespectful, ignorant and wrong. The same liberals who say to support the troops (as they should) should remember to respect those who fought in wars decades ago. Actually, back then the liberals/hippies basically spit in the faces of veterans of the Vietnam war by calling them baby killers and murderers when the soldiers back then had no more say in going to war than the brave men and women today do.

I like that Madonna is brash, loud and outspoken. However, she should be more sensitive and certainly more accurate in the things she says. I don't like McCain or Obama, but neither is (continued...)

joshua Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

Madonna is great at being political. Just trying to be a sexy pop star at 50 is political enough, as was her "I'm a woman and I'm in control of myself" statements in the 1980s. Although I don't see this as controversial as Fox News made it out to be, I prefer Madonna leave direct politics to someone else.

M Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

Madonna doesn't do anything without proper research. She checked out what McCain stands for and doesn't approve of it. She can certainly voice her opinion and this is how she decided to do it. Good for her.

joan v. Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 12:38 AM EST

Watch the STICKY AND SWEET TOUR IN US Cities near you!

Hip hop dudette Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 12:35 AM EST

btw, Hard Candy has already sold P2.7M copies worldwide! Download the album and her new single GIVE IT TO ME! You'll hear snippets of Get Stupid from theat song!

Chrissa B. Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 12:30 AM EST

Madonna has something important to remind us. WAR IS BAD. WAR IS NEVER AN ANSWER TO ANYTHING. WHAT HAVE WE RECEIVED FOR WAGING WAR IN IRAQ? And McCain would continue to pursue this rubbish again. Enough! I would rather use the funds to help our brothers who are suffering from Ike.

Ronald Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 12:20 AM EST

This is one of the points of Madonna's existence. for all of us to talk!

BUY HARD CANDY and but her tix for the Sticky and Sweet Tour stops at Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver and Miami!

Gusmo Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

Geesh, if I paid 200 bucks for a Madonna ticket, it'd rather see her sing a song than have her play me a video I can watch for free on youtube.

Over it Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

Madonna is Willem Dafoe's long lost twin. She's still trying to keep up with the young kids (stooping to kissing pop queens) and is failing. While she has a knack to make people talk, she really should take her millions and go away. From her wierd face to her overworked out body, Madonna's time has officially left the buiding. While I commend her efforts to TRY and raise political awareness, the whole thing comes off more about her than anything else. I don't think Madonna gives a rats a** about what goes on in the US. If she truly cared, she'd live here and not in England and speak with a fake English accent! Get over yourself Madonna...go back across the pond, take care of your kids, treat your husband like a man and not a servant and get your personal life together before you preach to everyone else!!!

didier Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

Yesterday in Paris, France, 80.000 persons, Madonna's opinion on who is good and who is bad was heartfuly applause. Was Bush agression in Iraq on basis of pure lies very subtle and Madonna's accurate opinion on Obama a fault?

Simba Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 04:02 AM EST

how is that different from the montage that accompanied "sorry" during the last tour? it had Bush instead of McCain but the message was the same and nobody made any fuss about it. Since there are hardly any Madonna consumers among the republican voters, it's beneficial for the GOP to show McCain as a victim of Madge's unreasoned filthy bash (or so they want their electorate to see it)

Jose Nungaray Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

Madonna is absolutely correct in comparing McCain to Hitler. As a former republican I give Madonna my blessing and total support. Republicans don't help the American people; they mess-up our economy by making the rich, richer, and the poor to suffer.

maynor orellana Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

It's about time that someone is actually speaking out, since the majority of us don get involved or even vote. God bless madonna at least she actually shares her thoughts unlike a lot of us. thanks

Joe4Minutes Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

He was given that position as affirmitive action, just like the Democrats handed him this token candidacy.

Joe4Minutes Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

In response to those who claim that I cannot believe what I wrote about Obama: The problem is most Obama supporters don't know anything about him. They simply project their hopes onto him & don't bother to learn about him. Many people are just excited about the aura of "change" he portrays, but he's just a typical dirty politician & worst than most. He had his rivals knocked off the ballot in the Illinois State Senate campaign & then voted "PRESENT" 130 times. He was only a Senator for 1 year before running for president, in which he spent planning his run. He has accomplished nothing. He is a cousin of both Bush & Cheney & he did get his house from Tony Rezko, a convicted criminal who made 14 million dollars in the district represented by Obama, who Rezko paid 100 thousand dollars to get elected in order to help him embezzle. Obama has no experience or credibility besides the ability to seem "presidential". He has idiots eating out of his dirty hands. He is the biggest lie!

Philip Stuart Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

I'll say one thing for Madonna, at least she gets people engaged and talking about these issues. Which is more than 99% of other popstars do. Good on her.

thomas Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 06:43 AM EST

Ho-hum yawn. No wonder I'm tired of you. You should run for President since you're so much smarter.

brigitta Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 11:02 PM EST

it is the absolute truth to so many of us - of course not everyone agree's and that is what this video is about... say what you like but make up your mind and vote.. darn it voice it in your vote either wayt

Luis PJ Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

Infoainment Madonna

Tim Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

Since a McCain win would be a (possibly fatal) disaster for the contry and the world, I don't think any criticism is too harsh. Anyone that would choose the stupid, ignorant, billying, absolutely un-American Sarah Palin deserves whatever he gets.

Katie Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

I think you are absolutely right- monocles ARE totally hot and it's about time we all recognized it. Hello, Madonna tried to tell us that all the way back with the "Express Yourself" video, but we didn't get; although, I believe at the time it was overshadowed by the message that underwear is way sexier when worn outside of your clothes. Maybe this time we'll listen.

Also, the vid is classic Madonna, which I love, so even the clumsy, heavy-handed parts are endearing to me. C'mon, peeps, lighten up! Madonna is Madonna, so if you don't like her, you haven't for a long time, and if you do, same thing. I don't think she's trying to change hearts; if someone stopped liking her now, well, they're a stupid ass. Once you've reached icon status, like Madonna, the rules change. An icon can never become irrelevant, for one thing!

jared Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

this was incredibly lame. i've been a madonna fan since 1984 but this is a complete waste. the message isn't clear. mccain and obama are both pictured - should we chose one over the other or are they both evil? the song is probably the worst thing i've ever heard and if this was on tv i'd change the channel. get up. it's time. how prolific. NOT.

Rebecca Rose Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

I love her, but there is nothing I hate more than a wealthy person criticizing things like consumerism and mass consumption. Like she lives in a grass hut and wears bamboo leaves all day, right? She has mansions filled with lavish things. So it's OK for her to have all of that, but when us lowly mortals down here want to partake as well, we are suddenly contributing to the downfall of the human race?

wtf?

Josh Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

apparently GOB does not watch the charts too close her 2nd single off the album is at #7 on the world chart and spent time at #1 in many countries even on some US charts. Most bought the 1st single because its MADONNA, a woman who is a global icon, Justin is not MADONNA nor will most buy a Madonna album just because he in on it.

Aaron Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

The fascinating thing about Madge has always been that she has a mainstream audience who are so hung up on the not-so-subtle way they see her work, that they completely simplify it and are happily mislead by media who turn everything into anything that sells more papers, etc. She's not saying McCain "is" another "Hitler", she's saying that history/society is defined by the choices we make and the propaganda we buy into which leads us to make "stupid" choices. It's a little more grey than the black and white nature Americans are choosing to see it as. here in Australia, we just think this is another example of you guys getting all wound up at anyone who dares be political. Get smarter!

erik Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

I can't believe people actually reacted to this. It's not even controversial. I didn't see the "Hitler" comparison. Madonna does look good though.

djk Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

HOT!!!! she is so right....it is our time to say something...she is not comparing anyone to hitler she is saying that you have your choice...make your voice heard....and FYI McCains choice of the FOOL Palin is an example of what she is talking about...PALIN HATES GAYS, HATES that woman can choose..SHE IS GOING TO TAKE YOUR RIGHTS AWAY....funny how MADONNA(who is HOT) noticed that MCcain is a a fascist...and lets be clear...The jerk Huckabee is also in the vid...he thought AIDS patients need to be in Concentration Camps....????that actually sounds like Hitler???

john b. Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

I fail to see how this is so controversial. I don't think the comparison with Hitler is direct. The message is that we are responsible for our own choices. Even though McCain may not be as bad (or as close to as bad) as Hitler, his support for war and invasion lead to the same consequences. Whether she's trying to make a statement or trying to shock, it's a job well done.

to Joe4Minutes Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

you are even more stupid than Madonna if you actually believe what you wrote. pathetic.

James Corns Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

MADONNA RULEZ! ... and she always will. I think the comparison of McCain to Hitler is amusingly hyperbolic. One definitely gets (bludgeoned with) the message. Good for her!

Joe4Minutes Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

I am (or was) a Madonna fan but I think using Hitler is tacky & offensive because it trivializes what he did. Neither McCain nor Obama is like Hitler, yet. McCain served honorably and Obama has done nothing but promote himself & take a quick affirmitive action ride to the top. OBAMA DID NOT VOTE AGAINST THE WAR!!! HE HAS VOTED TO SUPPORT THE WAR THE IN THE SENATE!!! He was oppsed to it in a speech but then VOTED FOR THE WAR once he became a Senator. OBAMA WILL NOT END THE WAR! He will do anything to get elected. He was first funded by the Muslim criminal, Tony Rezko, who purchased Obama's house for him and lived next door. Obama helped Rezko embezzle 14 million tax-payer dollars. Obama is friends with William Ayers, a confessed terrorist. Obama chose to sit in a racist, anti-Semitic, anti-American church until this election cycle brought his associations into question. Obama certainly has the charisma of a Hitler in training, but it remains to be seen if he will be as evil.

Tommy Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

The Confessions Tour featured a similar video comparing GWB to the world's worst and most evil "leaders" which was much more effective. This time around it leaves me saying "meh." Here's the Confessions version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rv0aIvyWn1w

jayster Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

Madonna is a pathetic old hag, and her music sucks. If it weren't for European and Asian fans, has-been artists like her would have no careers at all. Comparing McCain to Hitler is moronic. He voted for the war so that makes him like Hitler? If that's the case, where are the images of Hillary and the other Democrats who voted for it as well? Partisan politics as usual.

C Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

Madonna rules! For all the haters - what are you doing at 50?! Losers!!

Twist Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

Amazing as usual! All the haters, stupid as usual - have any of you listened?!

Skippy Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

I agree with everything she say's and support Obama.
War isn't the answer, we can talk our way out of problems as Obama say's and if not well then we surely learned something from Harold and Kumar in that all we have to do is eat a cockmeat sandwich like they do and surely all the bad people in the world will be happy and and wont bother us anymore, what a small price to pay for freedom, anyone hungry.

BMA Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

I thought it was cool — her opinion, her right to voice it. And McCain may not be on the same level as Hitler, but in terms of supporting the Iraq war, he's partly responsible for many innocent and unnecessary lives ending. Obama's not perfect, but he voted against the war.

Tim Lade Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

This clearly is meant to be shown during a concert which is a completely different context from on YouTube. Judge based on that fact and good for her for having an opinion. Too many people don't give a frak and decisions are made by those who show up.

Jane Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

I didn't get halfway through without having to turn it off. I'm not anti-Madonna or anything, but I am anti-tedium. The video was mediocre at best.

Kimberly Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

So sad - trying so hard to be relevant and as a result proves how irrelevant she really is. Kind of pathetic.

Green Gummi Bear Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

I'm sorry, I HATE to be political, but I fail to see why throngs of supporters who bought into the cult of personality of Hitler et al is more apropos toward McCain than Obama? I mean, "McCain is evil!" is plain stupid, "McCain is evil like Hitler!" is so idiotic (let alone insulting to the actual atrocities of WWII) it doesn't even deserve a response, but if you're trying to draw parallels, showing the throngs of cheering people is bad...uh...isn't Obama in the wrong part of this montage? If you want thought out, trying to make life better, damn the popularity, show someone like Nader (like him or not, nut or not, at least he puts the public above his popularity). If your argument is popularity = evil, I just have to say…Epic Fail!

Winona Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 09:46 AM EST

A well-edited cry for attention.

RobC Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

Cry for attention - I love Madge and love that she pushes buttons but some of the buttons she pushes are just easy targets and rather lazy for an shock icon.

GOB Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

Forgive me if I don't take my political advice from someone thrusting and gyrating with poles in a cage wearing hot pants and a raccoon mask. Apparently since only one single from her album made the charts (on the strength of JT, no doubt) she thinks this is the way to get noticed again. I think it's a bit ironic that the beginning of this video equates excess and consumerism with getting stupid... coming from a woman who lives one of the most luxurious lifestyles of anyone on earth. How many planes, trains and automobiles (and gallons of gas and pollution) does it take to transport her personal carnival from city to city and continent to continent? Get stupid, indeed.
