'Fringe': What did you think of J.J. Abrams' latest?

Sep 10, 2008, 09:05 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Sci-Fi, Snap Judgment, Television

Fringe_l Stuff I thought was cool in last night's pilot for J.J. Abrams' Fringe on Fox:

Lance Reddick's spooky cranium. First thing in the ep I saw that made me cheer out loud.

• That translucent-skin ailment. Gross, but really cool.

• The cow walking through the halls of Harvard.

• The whole immersion tank scenario. I was thinking, "How very Altered States." And then, a few minutes later, who shows up but Altered States star Blair Brown. With a ROBOTIC ARM. Well played, sirs, well played.

Stuff I was less impressed with:

• Star Anna Torv, who strikes me so far as the poor person's Kelly Lynch.

• The opening midair disaster. C'mon, J.J., you've been there, done that.

• Those 3D title cards. They were novel the first time I saw them -- at the opening of Panic Room. Less so after 90 minutes of repeated use here.

• The "Pattern" conspiracy/mythology. So far, awfully thin gruel to fuel the entire plot of this series, though it's easy to see how it'll offer a plausible excuse for Torv & Co. to explore other weird X-Files-ish phenomena. I can also see how it'll be loose enough to allow for stand-alone episodes that could draw casual viewers who aren't wrapped up in the mythology.

Overall, I thought the pilot started out slow and routine, but it definitely picked up when Reddick showed up and Torv's Agt. Olivia Dunham recruited the Bishops (John Noble and Joshua Jackson, pictured). There's a lot of potential in the chemistry among the three leads -- naive but open-minded Olivia, giddy mad scientist Walter, and skeptical, street-smart Peter. The characters are going to need a lot more fleshing out; fortunately, Abrams is the king of backstory. Watch for a full, official review of Fringe from our TV critics in a forthcoming issue of EW. Meanwhile, I'll be tuning in next week. How about you?

I'm sorry to everyone who enjoying Fringe but I think the show is ridiculous! Nothing more than an X-Files rip-off! The stories are so predictable that I was watching an episode with my sister and I told her exactly what was going to happened next and she asked me if I had watched it again! Yes in The X-Files and in dozens others series since then!!!! Where is the originality in television today? And it's not only the plot that's bad, the characters are worst: two-dimensional without depth and no chemistry between them. Anna Torv has not the charisma to carry a show like this (she isn't Gillian Anderson that's for sure) and Joshua Jackson with his sarcastic tone becomes irritating after a while. Maybe he's trying too hard to be Mulder! Again, where is the originality? What is the most disappointing is that despite the money they spend in TV shows today, despite the techniques they developed, the special effects etc the writing is getting worstand the creativity died somewhere along th

Just saw the pilot and wow, this is awful. The wooden emotional acting by Torv and the absolute plot non-sequitors: "I found someone who is a connection because they're in the same city! I need to quiz someone due to them having an association with my weak lead! And I only have 24 hours to do so because a crazy guy says so!" I can't cheer for an agent who goes around myopically trying to save her partner rather than DOING HER JOB. I'll take Jack Bauer over her anyday, even a non-violent version, due to his character's work ethic.

You struck out on casting the pilot, JJ.

I really enjoy the show especially the latest Fringe Episode. I couldn't watch it on tv so I ended up catching it on onlinefringeepisodes.com

Eddie Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 08:21 PM EST

JJ Abrams has done it again. FABULOUS SHOW, with a great cast. John Noble is Fabulous as Dr Bishop along with Anna Torv as Olivia and the other cast members are GREAT AS WELL. I see emmy in the future

Shadow Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

I adored it and I love Anna, she's gonna need a lil work, but she's GREAT -- for all your Fringe needs -- www.fringefancenter.com

tina Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

The 3D title cards gotta go, I love the show and Joshua is one of my favorite actors, but it makes me cringe and not want to watch every single time I see them, it's too much and stupid.

George Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 05:43 AM EST

The show has promise if they can be a little more creative. Monday's episode was a rehash of an original X-Files episode. I could have told you what was going to happen and how it would end. Is creativity dead? Why not rename the characters Scully and Mulder. I like the show but Monday was a BIG disappointment. Not everyone that watches TV or frequents the theater are under the age of 16. So how about being a more imaginative?

Jen in WI Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

I was eventually attracted to X-Files because it had the FBI aspect to it, never was a fan of sci-fi, but conspiracy theory stuff, oh yeah. And still am a huge fan of the X-Files.
I thought if it combined X-Files with Alias (LOVE Alias), I'd be a happy camper, especially since Abrams was at the helm.
What the youngins don't get is that there is nothing new under the sun--everything is some sort of reheated pizza. And the fact the pilot wasn't a slam bang shoot 'em up sensory overload, is also a good thing. It's a building process, a whole body of work perception, not necessarily all the hooplah confined to a single shot/episode.
Torv is much better than Lynch.
Also was not pleased to see Mark Valley offed already--I'm still hacked off at FOX for hosing Keen Eddie after three episodes (had a whole season filmed and only showed three eps...jack asses.)
Hopefully Abrams crafted some sort of bullet-proof contract with FOX, so the show gets a chance.

ericalina Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

i love that richard steig's brother was passenger #108. oh, jj abrams.

great twist. i'm into this show for sure, definitely worth watching again.

Tonya Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

I just watched this last night, but I enjoyed it for the most part. It started off a little slow and weird for me, but it definitely picked up. I am definitely going to watch it next week. It has just enough of everything I like.

Jennifer Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

I missed the first run episode but caught it last night, and altho there were scenes that I would have rather not watched (like the opening stuff on the flight) overall I really liked the show... As an added bonus, Josh Jackson (who I'ved loved since the first Mighty Ducks movie) is great in this role...

nolegirl Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

I really liked the show, but also have a fear that Fox may cancel it after just a few episodes. (Hopefully not!) Does anyone know if this show will get a TV Watch review each week?

ruzel Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

I don't know who Kelly Lynch, is but I think Anna Torv's acting was fantastic. She played a cool agent and the scene with her crying in the ambulance really got to me. Excellent work. Excellent show.

incredible show. radical. original.
x-files class entertainment

Pam Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

I loved the show, but that means that Fox will cancel it. Between them and Sci-Fi, they always seem to cancel the good shows and keep the crap! I will continue to tune in with hope...

Tiffany Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

I loved it! It's good to see Joshua Jackson again. He is a great actor. I didn't realize that 90 minutes had gone by when it was over. Can't wait to see more!

Yoga_Girl Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

Its good to see Pacey back... and he pulled off the smart ass delivery of "Sweetheart". I love homage as much as the next gal...but JJ needs to smooth out the edges a bit - a little too much X-Files, Torchwood, Twilight Zone... I was a devoted Alias fan until the lame ending... don't do that to me again!

DJ Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 09:25 PM EST

I LIKED IT ALOT, BUT AFRAID TO COMMITT TO IT, FOX HAS A WAY OF CANCELLING SHOWS I START TO WATCH.

Sara Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole 90 minutes. As I recall from reading the Fall TV Preview issue of EW, FOX spent 10 million on the pilot, it shows!
I especially like the idea that each episode will be a "stand alone" (according to EW) so that I don't have to get frustrated if I miss one or two. Can't wait to see more!

mangagirl Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

I'll be tuning in next week. The doctor grows on you and the cow didn't get killed, I liked that. I was just wondering how the doctor got such fine results with such old equipment.

LB Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

I give it a D. I thought the lead actress had just one expression to offer (pained sneer) and the dialogue was from the George Lucas school of dialogue writing. I was very disappointed and probably won't tune in again.

Doug Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

I absolutely loved the show. Watching it again for the encore and will tune in weekly.

Loved the Cow Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

I sure missed the X-Files so I'm glad it is back in its new format! The cow was great but was that really Harvard? I didn't recognize the exterior (where was the red brick) nor did the interior look very much like any buildings that I remember... The interiors looked more gothic... Very distracting.

Solitaire40 Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

I liked it and hope it gets enough ratings that it gets a chance to gain more audiance. The New X-Files with better special effects. It will cover alot of different things and have stand alone episodes as well. Thats good. X-Files had a little too much Alien Conspiracy and Lost is just too soap operaish and dragged out. I may wait to finish Lost once they are on DVDs. That show is better watch in a short am't of time 'cos there's so much to remember year to year.

Cleve Gallat Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

I'm hooked and look forward to an interesting first season. I believe this will turn out to be big hit.

Laura Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

To X-Fringe

They mentioned ALOT of areas these FRINGE scientist are working within

*reanimation *atrificial Intellegence * Teleconetics, ect

Have you see the Season 1 promo that aired after the Pilot?

I do not think we have heard of the last of John Scott...

Alex Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

It's funny that everyone says it reminds them of Lost, because to me there were parts that were dead ringers to JJ Abram's earlier show - Alias. (THE BEST pilot in my opinion)Every once in awhile they'd throw in an episode with a wacky scientist and some fringe science. How many times was Sydney running around the world trying to find a cure to save someone? Add the shady boss, betrayal by a loved one, etc. But that chick is no Jennifer Garner. I hope her acting improves.

Justin, Ky Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

Oh and funniest line, yeah its easy just like taffy ;).

Justin, Ky Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 08:22 AM EST

Its like x-files for this generation and way better. The special effects alone will keep me watching.

cowlove Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 07:04 AM EST

The cow was my favorite. Just enough screen time and not overly annoying and whiny. My Emmy vote!

Deb Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 03:26 AM EST

Loved it!!!

john t. Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 01:50 AM EST

i enjoyed the pilot. i've never watched the x-files so i didn't have any expectations. although i'm a huge lost fan, this didn't quite grab me the way lost did in its pilot episode.

consider this though: fringe may just be one of the best shows on fox's lineup. house, bones, and idol are really what fox has and i think fringe should be right up there with them.

john Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 01:17 AM EST

uninvolving & underwelming: perhaps with the pilot having set things up & out of the way regular hour episodes will be more lively & entertaining; government conspiracies have been done to death in books/movies/tv - was hoping abrams would transcend this trend with something much more out-of-this-world & out-of-the-box; will watch again to see where it goes but i was frankly disappointed so far

Kyle Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 12:37 AM EST

The "Alias" pilot, one the best pilots ever made in my opinion, is a clear example of what J.J. Abrams needed to achieve here. A series of this type needs a sense of excitement, especially in the pilot. Instead we spent most of our time watching the three leads sitting around and talking in cars, labs, and outside Boston buildings. The main "fringe" mystery itself was rather mundane and vague (chemical attack or disease via clone?) and overall not very enthralling. Considering we've already had a hit show explore FBI agents dealing with horror/sci-fi staples, watching these poorly fleshed out characters go after re-hashed sci-fi plots seems more like a chore than entertainment. With its debut ratings, it appears that this shows failure will at least humble J.J. enough to prove to him that fans of sci-fi and action won't just eat anything that they are fed.

Dave Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 12:15 AM EST

I loved it! Amazing first episode can't wait for more!

jords Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 11:31 PM EST

Loved the show and the potential I see it to have - I'll definitely be back next week. (My DVR is capturing so I can re-watch to catch anything I may have missed...JJ, 3 years of Lost have trained me well!)

I too loved Blair Brown's Darth Vaderess-robo arm. I think my inner geek pretty much squeed itself to death over this show. (Denethor! Pacey! Hey, it's THAT GUY! Darth Vaderess!)

Here's to a great run for Fringe this season!

X-Fringe Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

I can't believe after all she went through to save Scott's translucent life that he ends up dead anyway from a lousy car crash. That really irked me, probably more so because I love Mark Valley and was hoping he was a regular. Also found myself yelling "shut up Pacey" at the TV screen a lot. Probably not a good sign.

k Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

Yeah. Saw the second episode. Anna Torv is still permanently scowly and inexplicable, old man genius is still hammily strange, and our other J.J. is still there only to look snazzy and express our irritation with how nonsensical the rest of the show is... but the ep is better overall. I don't buy "The Pattern" yet, though. No one's even trying to explain why they see a connection between "unexplained events." If anyone but J.J. were behind this, it never would have been made.

tclocs Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

I thought the coffee cup interrogation scene was the best part of the show. Josh=big star.

Brigitte Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 08:18 PM EST

I thought the premire episode was great. I have loved Lance Reddick ever since he appeared on The Wire. He does a good job of being slightly creepy. Anna Torv did an ok job. To portray The Bishops we get hot Joshua Jackson , who definatly held his own and then the crazy Steward of Gondor from "LOTR: Return of The King" playing his dad. HA! Wow! Talk about perfect casting for that role. The translucent skin and conspiracy aspect happily reminded me of the X- Files. The "pattern" and creepy company component reminds me of LOST. I loved the leaf, apple etc whenever its time for a commercial. Who the heck thought of that :) I did NOT like the 3-D signage. Please loose it. Towards the end of the eposode I found myself talking out loud...maybe to dog or maybe to myself saying "yeah baby!! This is my new favorite show!!" Quite a proclamation because I have'nt felt that new show anticipation since season 1 of Heroes. You know, where you just cant wait till the next episode.

katel Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

I found this to be boring. NOt as cool as say, twin peaks, x-files or Dexter. However, I think True Blood on HBO has real potential to be the spooky cool new show.

Kari Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

I thought this was one of the best shows I've seen in years. Very original--I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It's also great to see Joshua Jackson back on t.v.!

Bonnie Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 07:07 PM EST

Anyone who is a fan of Lost and was a fan of Alias can see the influences. The 3-D cards were reminsicent of Alias' as did a lot of the editing. And the music! So Lost. I really enjoyed it, but I love Joshua Jackson and have been on board with Abrams stuff since Felicity. I hope this continues to pick up momentum.

Ellipsian Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

Pretty good stuff, overall, but to me what matters most is the potential in a pilot, and I'm feeling LOTS of it. Would love it if they tied in bits of "Lost" mythology... JJ rocks!

StaleCake Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

The COOLEST thing: John Noble! He was riveting, with his Vincent Price voice and everything. I also love that his cutting-edge science is from the 60s and 70s, isolation tank and all. His best line, "Now let's make some LSD."

rbt Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

Totally loved the oremiere episode. Can't wait for future episodes. Joshua Jackson was hot and awesome! The chemistry between he and John Noble was terrific.

Hamsami Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

A little of Bones and a little House sprinkle in some Terminator/X-File and stir in some 24 you are on the Fringe of somthing good.

Although it seems some fans of LOST have been disappointed with the Pilot, I thought it was very well done. It's not the same premise as LOST. Olivia Dunham is thrown right up into the everyday with something HUGE already in progress...the back drop is not an Island where out characters are out of touch, 'lost' from the mainland making the mythology able to be long and more drawn out. FRINGE takes us to a new scary...a scary that is right in front of our faces from the get go...unkowning in a knowing enviroment.

I absolutely love the cinematography! It reminds me of Hitchock with unique color scheams and pattern motiefs! In fact I see many VERTIGO referances ...John Scott (John 'Scottie' Fergison), Double agents and rooftop chase!

The cast too I think is a good mix. Anna Torv is in my opinion perfect for us to relate to as an audience, like her character thrown into this crazy world of a modern day frankenstien of a show. John Noble is also perfect and Jackson will grow on me.

I liked everything but the lead actress. She's terrible and deadfaced. If she doesn't improve by the second episode, I'm out.

Raven_Moon Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

I really liked this show. I think it has a lot of potential. Also, I thought Anna Torv was good and she'll get better as the show continues. The only this I thought was a little cheesy was the giant names of the locations. I can't wait until next weeks episode.

DocH Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

I don't know that Torv is Lynch like, she just strikes me as the wholesome, all-American farmers' daughter from just down the road. She does have screen presence though. FRINGE as reminds of "Millennium"... FBI guy, conspiracy, viral contagion, etc...

I will lay claim to one acronym though. X-Files had CSM (cigarette smoking man). I will stake claim to the translucent Agent Scott as - GDG - Glazed Donut Guy.

The whole thing seems kinda cheesy to be, but I never got into Lost or Heroes either. I only saw a few minutes of it, but I did catch the scene where Blair Brown shows off her bionic arm. I guess the only other roles for actresses her age are drunken grandmas (see the new 90210). If you are a Joshua Jackson fan, skip this show and rent Aurora Borealis, a movie about a young man and his grandparents, played by Donald Sutherland and Louise Fletcher, and Juliette Lewis as the love interest. (I just saw it on Lifetime Movie Network.)

SB Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

Did anyone else notice they left what looked like a green screen at the bottom of ther stairts? My husband and I both jumped out of our seats. The music was mixed so loud we could not hear a lot of the dialouge and when you miss the words you miss story points.

J. Baker Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

Several Lost elements? How about: (1) creepy corporation that could be behind it all, whatever IT is (Dharma vs. Massive); (2) not-yet-understood pattern that goes beyond human involvement ("the Numbers" vs. well, um, "the Pattern"); (3) suggestion that the lead characters were "chosen" for some reason ("the island" vs. Broyle doing the choosing). Hey, it's not that I don't like reheated pizza, it's just that it's never as good the next morning.

Anon Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

There are several "lost" elements to Fringe, but all of them good. I did think both starting with the airplane stuff was weak. Lost makes me think, and now Fringe will too. Go JJ Abram!!!

Anon Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Pilot re-airs on Sunday night

Anon Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

I didn't think Torv looked like Cate B...she reminded me of Janel Moloney from West Wing.

Loved Joshua Jackson (always have, always will).

Loved Mark Valley (always have, always will).

First episode was slow, but even the writers admitted it needed to be to introduce everyone and give us the set up. They said the upcoming episodes move better.

Joanna Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

Anyone know if they plan to reair the pilot? It's too early for Fall TV and I totally missed it.

Tim Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

I thought it was great. I can't wait for Tuesday night! And regardless of what others may say, I REALLY LIKED THE "BREAK" LEAVES, APPLES, ETC. They informed me how long I had to wait (either 6 or 90 sec.) for the show to start after a commercial and now to find out there is more to the symbols makes me like them even more. Please keep the "new" ideas you have, even if they don't seeem to work right away. people don't like new to be TOO NEW, it scares them. But they will get used to it and eventually come to expect it. This show has the potential to be REALLY COOL!

Sheila Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

Fringe was superb.

This is already the highest quality, best acted, best scored TV show that has ever aired.

More people must watch this show, tell all your friends to watch Fringe and how good it is.

Better than Lost, and, going forward, (and quite by design) it will make more sense than Lost!

Kathie Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

I really liked it and it was NOTHING like Lost. The only similarity was the plane (and as Stieg's brother was bent over his seat rocking back and forth, all I could think of was him thinking "my name is NOT Jack Sheppard. My name is NOT Jack Sheppard." LOL Other than that, and the appearance of Lance Reddick as a character (different) ... where were the similarities others are claiming. I like Anna Torv and Josh Jackson, I loved John Noble and Lance Reddick.

SpikesPrincessJ Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

I really liked it. It wasn't fantastic, but I see the potential it has. Wasn't a huge fan of the lead actress. I felt like she was just reading lines. Love Joshua Jackson. I hope it continues to get better, it could be great.

Phyllis Lucas Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

Well, I must say that I was impressed by this first episode. It certainly does make me want to see more. There is so much brainless trash on Tv, that it is quite good and hopeful too, to find something that one can enjoy, not to mention provoke a little thought.
Thank you,

JOZE Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

yes yes..it is X-filish!!!but sexier...I love the creepy beggining and the twist at the end! contrary to most people..I really enjoy the middle part of the show...the whole let's see if the scientist in crazy or not part! was good! I love Jean(or gene) the cow!too funny!so adorable!
A star is born!

2smokingbarrels Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

Missed the first half hour, but the last 60 minutes were great. I will def tune in again. Nice to see Pacey back on the tube ...

Mozz Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

I liked it, but did not go gaga over it, like i did the first time i saw LOST. I remember my reaction to that pilot like it was YESTERDAY, i nearly jumped off my seat and bowed to the television. FRINGE; is more mainstream, not as creative, see how they Sidney Bristowed engineered the near death of a loved one, to drive the plot. But the cinematography was stunning, and who else can give us television that belongs on a big screen.

Robert Quinones Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

I LOVE this show! It was certainly a flawed gem but none the less given that slow a beginning, that ending left me wanting more. It oddly reminds me of Heroes and I love Olivia. Easily one of my favorite women on TV right now. I am so excited though that Joshua Jackson is back looking fierce and backing it all up with some serious chops. Can't wait for next week.

Scout Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

FLOVE josh jackson - he was absolutely believable as intelligent, so pitty those who think otherwise.
Great show. I was skeptical, but watched because it's JJ. Outdid my expectations and I plan to watch next week.
I think it's more Alias than X-Files, hands down. Maybe it's the Rambaldi device that is causing so many problems, and Jennifer Garner & Michael Vartan will be stars in Season Two!

dee Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

I liked it. Will watch again. I liked Sorv. She looks alot like Mira Sorvino though. Love the father and son.

me Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

one thing that irritated me right from the start, if the auto pilot landed the plane with no problems, why did the oxygen masks drop??? other than that, slow start but i love pacey!

Artgirl33 Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

I hope they keep the cow!

I really liked it! And the chemistry between Olivia and Peter is awesome. Joshua Jackson was really great, and I really like Anna Torv and John Noble, too. She did make me think of Kelly Lynch sometimes. I hope that goes away soon. I don't really care for Kelly Lynch. I will watch the show again next week.

x-files + story telling of lost = brilliant. this show was awesome, it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. i am very much looking forward to next week!

STAT1 Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

I also wanted to say that Anna Torv was absolutely phenomenal, can't wait to see more of her. The acting in general was great, the show looked and sounded cool, and the plot seemed to be off to a pretty good start.

STAT1 Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

I was blown away by the pilot last night. I am a huge fan of Lost, and Fringe offered a darker yet slighly sillier thriller that kept me entertained the entire time. I hadn't planned on watching this show but now I'm definitely hooked.

circe Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

Anna Torv was just okay. You can appreciate the charisma of an Evangeline Lilly or Jennifer Garner after seeing Torv. Some people just have "it."

Logan Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

I really enjoyed the Pilot episode. i think that as the story progresses, we will see much more from Torv. i mean, there are a lot of people talking bad about her performance last night. think of it this way, she was a lot like scully off the get go. skeptical, pragmatic, and a little bitchy. but she had to save her lover, and then he turns out to be the bad guy. so there is the character motivation, and plot development at the same time. Brilliant. i will most definitely be back next week to watch. remember people, we have to give new shows the benefit of the doubt, not every show can just come out as cool as 24 or Lost.

Good solid show + pacey Cant ask for much more Esp. from the people that brought you "hole in the wall"

TrapperZ Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

This show has potential to be great. Yes the pilot was a tad slow but it was shot beautifully. I think if they can iron out the cheesy parts and there were a few as far as the dialogue went, it definately has promise. I wish the guy from "The Wire" used a more believable voice though, i'm not sure what he's trying to do with that. Joshua Jackson doesn't even bother me, does anyone think he's a clone?

DanOregonq Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

I think Eureka does a better job of explaining "the science" behind its plots. I felt like I was always a scene behind in understanding what was going on.

AUStarwars Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

Oh also...there was a scene when they came back to Boston from Iraq when the camera panned to the Train Tracks...with a giant "X" taking up a lot of the screen..so at least JJ is giving the homage

Nee Nee Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

I think it's funny that anybody is comparing this to Lost. Why? Because there was a plane crash? That's about the only similarity I can think of. If anything, the show is more like Alias, except without the greatness of Jennifer Garner. I'm not completely sold that this is going to be a great show, but I'll keep watching because it's JJ Abrams. This kind of show is what he does best. Like a lot of others, I'm not crazy about Anna Torv. Maybe she'll get better, though. Joshua Jackson and the guy who played his dad were great, though. It's a little hard to believe him as a genius; he's gonna need some better material.

AUStarwars Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

The show was pretty good, and "so original" that I am expecting Mulder to show up next episode, and William Bell to smoke a lot of cigarettes.

Richard M Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

I've seen better storytelling on a wrapper of Bazooka bubble gum.

Binky Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

I can suspend belief with the best of them, but Joshua Jackson having an IQ of 190? Never gonna buy that.

Em Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

It wasn't very good, but I'll give it one more shot. Maybe it was just the 90 minute format of the premiere, but I got really bored.

Lucy Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

I was disappointed. The tone was very uneven -- sometimes scary (plane crash and disfigured bodies) , sometimes funny (cow and the weird old professor); sometimes romantic (I love you scene) but it all added up to spastic and unbelievable. LOST slowly led up to a "willing suspension of disbelief," but such a buffet of much weird stuff was dished out at lightning speed last night that I spend half the show laughing at the absurdity. When the female lead allowed the weird scientist to insert a probe in her skull and lock her into a tank, I gave up on her as a character, and she's the lead character! I doubt I'll tune in again. I am soooo disappointed.

I enjoyed the show very much last night. Noble was perfectly cast as Walter and I was pleasantly surprised at how good Josh was. I have to make a comment on the music. As a hearing impaired person, I have been very upset the last couple of years at how loud the music is in new shows. It's like shows are competing with each other to have the loudest music. Thank God for closed captioning. I was very happy last night to find the music toned down. I still turned on CC out of habit, but did not have to refer to it as often as I usually do. It makes for a much more enjoyable viewing experience when I can watch the characters instead of the words. I hope this stays the same throughout the series.

Joe Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Well, they figured out a way to extend LOST. This has LOST writen all over it, from the music, to the company that does research on far out science to even the actors (well only 1 so far). Now thats not to say that it's a bad thing to be like LOST. I just was hoping for something a little different. I for one think the show has great potential and I look forward to watching more episodes before I make a final judgement. As for starting the show with a plane, well JJ made references to a lot of SciFi shows last night so why not is own show LOST.

Jennifer Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

I liked this but didn't love it. I think it might get better, though, as they develop the character more, especially Olivia, and I enjoyed the basic setup. Blair Brown with a robotic arm = FABULOUS. Will she be back? I found Anna Torv flat in scenes with her evil boyfriend but a lot warmer with Joshua Jackson, so I guess I'm going to like her performance more going-forward. Hope so.

Lis Pearspn Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

She's no Jennifer Garner, that's for sure (or Keri Russell for that matter). But wow it's great to have Pacey back.

Michael Martinello Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

Pacey stinks, this show is garbage.

cay Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

I think my favorite part was when Walter said "The truth... The truth is.." I has half expecting him to end it with "out there"

Anie Kessler Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

I had such high hopes for a strong, intelligent female lead... Scullyesque, if you will... I got Anna Torv, who at best could be called vapid... I'm banking on the fact it's just the pilot and actors need time to find a groove. I really want to like this show so I can live through another disappointment when the network cancels it for no apparent reason.

Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

I never watched Lost but I loved Alias for the first couple of seasons so I was interested to see the new Abrams. I'd have to say I was pretty hooked by the first commercial break. I loved the translucent skin effect and I have to say I really liked Torv - she's one of the main reasons I'll be tuning in next week. Glad her love interest is gone, but that was predictable. Honestly, I don't know why everyone likes the 3D lables so much; they're ok, but Heroes did it better 2 seasons ago.
