'90210': What would make you keep watching?

Sep 15, 2008, 08:27 AM | by Jennifer Armstrong

Categories: '90210', Television, Those Crazy Kids!

90210_l It might've been when I realized the entire second episode of 90210 would revolve around (snore) family bowling night. Or when my colleague Tanner Stransky and I successfully made a (very easy) game out of predicting the next line/plot beat. (As in: Let me guess—Naomi's mother already knows her father's cheating, and she's totally okay with it.) Or when Jessica Walter wasn't on the screen for the whole hour. All I know is that by the end of the week two of the supposedly edgy teen drama remake, I was more interested in Tanner's and my conversation about Dorota, the maid on Gossip Girl, than I was in 90210's future.

Being a teen-show connoisseur, I wanted to love the new 90210, or at least like it, but it's officially giving me too little to work with. The only time my attention perks up at all is when Jennie Garth is onscreen; and even at that, she's been saddled with lame storylines like that flat, chemistry-free relationship with a teacher. (I love me some scruffy boys, but unshaven does not automatically equal interesting.) Everybody's noticing the extreme skinniness of the young female cast members, but I'm even more famished for some fresh plotlines and/or remotely clever dialogue. (Please see Greek for whip-smart banter lesson.) Or maybe the show could just show a smidgen of post-millennial self-awareness? Anything to indicate there's a brain to go with this show's excessively svelte body?

I can't be alone in my disappointment with 90210 2.0; ratings dropped a whopping 30 percent from the series premiere to last week's followup episode. Which leads me to a question for those of you who've been watching: If you ran The CW, what would you do to breathe new life (and new viewers) into this high-profile gamble? Brainstorm like a champ, and your comments could appear in an upcoming issue of EW. And when you're done sounding off on our message board below, click through after the jump and take our official "How to fix 90210" poll.

bring back brandon walsh and have him be the biological father of kelly's kid because they are real soulmates and loved eachother through it all even through the bad times . kelly loved brandon from the start when she spotted him at school and playing basket ball in his room in his undies.

Iwould like to see more (TY) Adam Gregory Please!!!!

Brenda&DylanForever Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

What they should have done, was had kelly marry someone with a teen daughter at the school, that way she's involved and a parent of one of the students, and the storyline can revolve around her and brenda a bit more, like what's happening with them, or introduce a younger sibling besides "silver" - it needs to connect to the old one more - AND - they need to develop things and not just jump right into it - what we loved about the original was the sweetness of Brenda and Dylan and their adjustment, there's no adjustment here - this chick annie got 2 guys in the first episode - give us something to work with!

Cindy Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

My god it's episode 4 not even the original drew the ratings that this show is right now. Give it time for the plots to form, sometimes you posters on EW take things too crazy, oh and for the old generation of 90210 fans stop telling the new ones that it is not for them.

No disrespect but about how many of you are 16-24 yrs. of age ? How many of you listen to what the your typical 18 yr. old listens to ? like the same food they like, Read the same magazines they do, Look at the same movie they do, Use the same words they do, Another words how can you tell me when I like something and say to myself "this is good I want to see this", how can you tell me that it's not ?

Get off the high horse already veteran viewers. I'm 19 I love this show.

trish. Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

I never watched the 90210 back in the days. i TRIED watching it, but couldnt get into it. Maybe cause it's old. i have no idea. If they watched that then of course they'll try to somehow compare it one way or another. Give the new cast a chance. Some of them, ive never even heard of...I.E annalyn? idk her name..But she is a bad actress.

As for Shanae, i've been used to her before cause of Degrassi, she's OK.

Jessica stroup is amazing though. I can tell that she's the favorite because she does deliver all the time, in every scene. But whos to tell that the others wont? give them a chance.

MY personal favs on this show are Dixon, Silver, and Ryan (teacher), grandma.

I mean, if anyone writers are reading this, they should bring more. Like, give us some interesting lines(quotes)..Witty comebacks, and more memorable stuff.

i dont have a problem with the show. it's just......they need to get better.

which i'm sure they will!

Belle Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

Obviously more Jessica Walters & Silver (I think my whole arm is bigger than her legs and I’m a size 6) and less Annie, etc. I do like seeing Kelly. Posters were right, the new 90210 should have revolved around the Taylor women. Lori Loughlin needs to leave. Let Rob Estes be a single dad, who happens to be a principal at his kids’ school. Maybe then, Annie would be less annoying (I doubt it) and Dixon less bland. Heather Locklear can be the Special Guest Star for 10 episodes. I feel it was sort of a waste for Shannen to be on the show. Remember how she used to deliver her lines so bitchy? Now, she looks like she doesn’t exactly care. Okay, I sort of changed my mind about Heather Locklear, they should have cast her as Naomi’s mom, found out her husband was cheating, not only does she divorce him but she takes over his company as the new CEO. You can show the conflict between mother & daughter. Heather can have an affair with Ty who has gotten tired of annoying Annie.

Neena Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 05:48 AM EST

I was a fan of the original, however with this show i was really looking forward to the new characters. TBH Kelly and Brenda don't interest that much.

I understand that a show takes time to get going. But so far 90210:TNG has been disappointing. I didn't expect it to be like the original. However nothing has really gripped me so far.

The plotlines move way too fast. A show should spend it's time introducing us to the characters. Right now i don't feel like i know any of them that well.

The writing is poor. The characters need to be fleshed out a bit more; where is the drama? I thought that Naomi was supposed to be the bad girl? There needs to be a baddie. Someone we love to hate, who ends up redeeming themselves.

Please slow down with each ep. Too many plots are getting resolved too quickly. The Silver is homeless storyline could have gone on for at least a few ep's.

BUT - i will watch this until the end of the season; just hope it improves.

How to improve 90210 2.0 (beta) Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 04:44 AM EST

Love triangle with an extra angle: love triangle ala brenda/dylan/kelly only with ethan/annie/silver. ethan loves annie, silver loves annie. annie loves ehtan AND Silver.

Steve Sanders Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

Problem # 1: The show's premise is a fish out of water story. Annie and Dixon fit right in. There's no real challenge for them to overcome -- nor are they reeling from the differences and trying to take it all in. The way the Walsh twins were in the very first episode.

Problem # 2: Nat's there, and he should be, but why? The writers give him nothing to do! He needs to develop relationships with these kids, and share some of who he is now, and how it relates to who they are now.

Problem # 3: Awkward, stilted cutting. Fast cuts of scenery and cars woooshing past come to a screeching halt when they lead into a lanquid, boring scene. Stop trying to be the Hills. Motion does not equate to energy or interesting.

Problem # 4: The writing just isn't very good. Why am I fixing your show for you? The original mandate is "ordinary kids in extraordinary circumstances" Work on getting that "write" and earing that big paycheck. And yes, I could out write you, and with only half a latte...

jojo Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 12:26 AM EST

I loved the original, was truly sad when the show ended. The new show is on the right track, but defently needs a better story line. I hope it doesnt get cancelled next week.-

jen Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

I just got caught up with my 90210 episodes and I have to say the majority of the people on this board are right. Naomi is a horrible actress and I cringe or laugh everytime she is on screen; the outfits are HORRIBLE; Walsh family 2.0 not working (did anyone else think Etha's house was a dead ringer for the old Casa Walsh?); Jessica Walter is great, but she was better on Arrested Development. I can't believe they let it out so early that Dylan is Kelly's Baby Daddy (although not a surprise)- Luke Perry has no desire to be on the show so why tease us with that? What this show needs is to show the original alum the money, get them back on the show and you would totally have people watching. CW: listen to what people are saying here: bring back the old BH 90210!! The only time I am remotely interested is when Jennie Garth pops up (and OMG loved Jackie Taylor showing up, butupiset she's still a drunk!). I'm having more fun watching the original repeats on Soapnet than watching this crap

BlantantlyHonest Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:52 PM EST

AWWW whatever..You people dont give television nowadays any chance at all. What you must realize is that it is no longer 1994. 90210 is specifically a "teen drama". If you are 30ish years old, how do you expect to have anything in common with the show. The original show was relative to your time and 90210 is relative to this generation. Get over it!!! You are no longer 16, if you dont like 90210, go watch something more age appropiate like Grey's Anatomy or Oprah!!!!

JEn Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:23 PM EST

Half of the people that are watching are to young to even remember the original. But all of us that do remember, this is horrible. The original had class, and a good storyline, they weren't all played at rich braty kids...you had brenda and dylan that worked for what they had like dixon is doing. It's nice they do throw some of them in every now and then. But we need to know where everyone is and what they are doing. Now that we know that dylan is the dad, what is there to look forward to. What are you going to do to keep us interested..all i think of when i see naomi is the slut she played nip/tuck she is a HORRIBLE actress and needs to be replaced or something. We know donna has a baby, but is she still married to david? THey need to bring in more drama from the original and not this bad acting, bad writing storylines. Yes I'm 30 and watched the original from episode 1-the the end. And would love nothing more to see another show just like that one. I cried when it was over!

Bella Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 07:40 PM EST

Forget about it. Unless they had originally figured in everyone from the original cast, the show hasn't a chance. Let classics be classics unless you plan on including EVERYONE from the original cast.

Margaret Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 05:18 PM EST

90210 is STUPID. Cw had the nerve to recreate a classic. I am a fan of the original and thought the producers had a great idea of hiring Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty. I can't even watch another episode unless you bring back all the original cast and tell us what happened to the "gang" of 90210. It is about time we had a reunion. There are no changes to be made. The writing is terrible.

kmc Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 04:21 PM EST

ok to be honest i never saw the original show i was 1 when it started and i dont ever remember it being big in england so i have nothing to comapre it to! Its a good show as far as im concerned, yeah its the same kind of things as the oc, gossip girl and one tree hill but whats to be expected its a teen drama they all cover the same issues at some point. I notice as well people who are fans of the original show all you do is compare the old and new and no wonder its not having any chance its only had three episodes not 10 seasons, also its not the same show its a spin off, you have to give spin offs a chance look at things like angel, fraiser both succesful spinoffs and only include 1 or 2 original characters, you just have to give it time and stop comparing it, its not the same show. I do agree that kelly part is boring so far im not a fan of that character whatsoever, everything about her bores me at the minute, i do like the rest of her family though!!

Ennia Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

they need to fire all the writers, remove the walsh ^2 family and revolve the show around those that were connected to the original cast. kelly and David's sister was a pull in the right direction. this show is not realistic at all, and it looks like they are forcing most of the cast to act ( the lead younger actress is a degrassi alum need i say more). i give this show (please God do not let CW torture us with more) 1 season.

GeeMoney Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

I don't like the show because the writing isn't good. And they should have paid Tori Spelling the money she deserved! I mean, her dad created the show!

I'm still holding out for a Brenda-Dylan-Kelly catfight. That's the only reason why I'm still watching!

Cin Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

It is a dumb and dumber version of the original. The original being dumb and this one dumber. You couldn't make me watch it if you glued my eyelids up and tied me in my chair.

Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

I like the show....maybe it's because of my undying dedication to the original...but you have to remember that the original was a little cheesy and that was ok then....I think the writer's are trying to recreate the cuteness that came with the first show. Everybody now, demands more with racy plots and steamy love scenes...the dialogue has to be killer for a show to survive on sweetness and cuteness alone. Real people like to live in a fantasy world but quite honestly the "new" kids in town seem to blend in just a little too smoothly. What was so great in the original was that viewers felt they were Brenda and Brandon and wanted to be Kelly. I'm not so sure about these new characters.Annie seems to already be one of the Beverly Hills clones. I still support the show and I am dying to the see the old characters return....that show was my life.

Donna Martin Graduates Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Bring back all the old characters, get rid of all the new ones and call the show "90210 - In their 30's". Seriously, Annie is a bad actress and I agree her lines were horrible. But how can they have all of these close friends already after a week. When Naomi was going crazy and crying and her friend ran in Annie was like "I have to help". Why? You barely know Naiomi. What could you possibly do to help?

Gina Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

As much as I love Lori "Aunt Becky" Laughlin and Rob Estes, I find them pretty boring on the show. I'm more interested in who's Kelly baby daddy is than anything else going on. Naiomi..we aren't suppose to like and feel sorry for the 'bad girl'. No, she's supposed to be mean and do biotchy things. When Silver's mom goes to rehab have her move in with Donna and David and there 3 kids. David is a struggling hip hop producer and art imitates life when Donna's father dies and doesn't leave Donna the fortune she thought she would inherit. Now she runs a small clothing store on Melrose. I'll give the show another week.

Amanda Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

Racier storylines. Don't drop the principal's illegitimate son plot! More scandals! Keep the plot moving quickly. Feed the cast--esp. Annie. Bring back Kelly's baby daddy.

judy Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 07:29 AM EST

i was a teen when the frist 90210 came out i love it was im trying to get into the new 90210 its not the same but its still good i like it to it makes me fell young agine

Mike D Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:59 AM EST

I will continue to watch as long as Tori Spelling is not on it.

Rimbo Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 01:16 AM EST

As someone who was a diehard fan of the original 90210 I really wanted to love this new show..and Im not ready to give up on it yet. First thing first, you can't bring back a character like Kelly Taylor and give her such a shitty storyline! This girl has gone through everything, make her more interesting and definitly bring back more of the old cast..MORE BRENDA!!!!! Also, the writing NEEDS to improve! You can't have the same old story-lines that we've seen on every other teen drama. The reason Gossip girl is so successful is because the characteres aren't one dimensional ( the rich girl, the badass, the nerd..) Its time to give these teens a bit more depth! If the storylines stay as predictable as they are, we all know where this show is gonna end up!

Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:47 AM EST

Bottom line, the writing is BAD. Sorry! I really tried to like it but I couldn't handle Naomi's bad attempt at crying and the uber cheesy lines. Grimes was great in Degrassi, what happened!

Anthony Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 12:14 AM EST

To start, mention the original casts members more and their stories. Hopefully in the near future some special cameos. I'm not asking for the original cast to take over and overshadow this new spin on the series but acknowledge them more often and keep us old schoolers interested. Some examples; Are David and Donna still married? Steve too? Is Dylan still traveling the world by himself etc. And kudos to whoever decided to give Kelly a baby and not mention who the father is. Now, that's good publicity for the show. I think that more people are curious to see who fathered Kelly's baby than what's going on with the newbies. Even the return of Miss Brenda Walsh was welcoming in the pilot and hopefully we'll get to see if she decides to stick around for a while longer. People, we all have to give this show a shot to see if it will last out the hype. I seem to recall that back in 1990, "Beverly Hills 90210" wasn't exactly a runway hit at the beginning so patience people!

Nick Bridwell Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

okay well I think it's clear that the reason people tuned in at all is that 90210 has ties to the original show. And it's no surprise that the best parts involve Kelly's family. We have a connection with her because Jennie Garth's character has history. The new show doesn't have the chemistry within the family that existed in the adopt-a-kid scenario that made The o.c. awesome, and it doesn't have the teenage angst or interesting writing that makes One Tree Hill work. I say focus on the old cast, bring in a couple more, and get some better writers that can really make us interested in the new characters....its really so much more interesting when we see the old crew....just start up their story line 8 years later and use whichever cast members will come back....the + 4 years thing revitalized OTH and it could work on 90210 even with the old crew....

michele Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:52 PM EST

Two words: Luke Perry.

Jennie Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

Kelly, Brenda and Silver should be the main focus. Less Annie and Naomi. They are boring. More Dixon and Silver.

Lily Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:38 PM EST

Focus on Kelly, Brenda and the grandmother. The parents are boring and no Cohens (from The OC).

They should focus on Silver and Dixon. Ditch Naomi. The actress cannot act and her character looks older than Andrea Zuckerman.

Kyle Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:28 PM EST

Wow; such negative comments; what a shame; this is how our culture is; complain and complain. The show is great except for the swearing and premaital relations. I used to wake up early to watch the feed of the old 90210 on my old big dish; most of the young'ins have no idea what that was.

The show is fine; great plot lines and dialog. Let us look for what is good, and be supportive or they will take it off the air. Is that what you really want?

I hope the Dad is Steve; and that he comes back; I hope Shannen marries Luke by Billy Graham, and Jason marries Andria.

Only wish the price of the Fugitive with Janssen was lower, and that they would bring back on DVD 12 O'clock high with Robert Lansing; that was the best theme song I think I have heard. Be positive; how you act on earth is how you will be in Heaven; want to be a sourmouth there too?

JeffreyMixed Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

Bring in Michelle Trachtenberg and have her reprise her "Georgina" character from GOSSIP GIRL. The show needs a well-known evil character - sort of like what they did with MELROSE PLACE with their first season when they brough on Locklear.

Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

I don't know if you can really save this show. The only reason I'm interested in it is because of Brenda, and she won't even be there that long. The story lines are kinda boring and I've seen them all before. One person cheats, boo hoo my mom is an alcoholic, love triangle. I only have one spot open for a teen drama in my tv line up and that spot goes to Gossip Girl. Sure, they have love triangles, cheating, underage drinking, but the characters are actually interesting and I actually find myself rooting for them.

aa Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 09:17 PM EST

money.

Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

have the girls eat something

B- Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

Have Shannen reveal an ex husband played by Dean Cain who shows up with a real hellraiser of a daughter played by Cassie Steele. And slowly phase Shenae out. I knew from day 1 she was gonna be weak. Also film on real film, not high def video. The show currently looks fuzzy and cheap like All My Children. But people complain too much, it's only been 2 episodes. Who expected 90210 to change the world? Give it time. Even Gossip Girl and Veronica Mars needed time to get good.

Nicole Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

Bring back some of the orginals with storylines, not just cameos. Bring Brenda back for more episodes. Make Brandon the dad of Sammy hehe and Bring the long awaited reunion of Brenda and Dylan. Its been a long time coming for god sakes. Then fill the rest in with juicy scandalous stories of the kids.

Zach Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

Much as I love the original (and I voted to focus on the old cast), this is really a goner -- even if the CW keeps it for lack of a higher-rated alternative. We can complain all we want about the plotlines and dialogue, but it really comes down to the cast. Not only are most subpar, but, more importantly, the actors do not click together. The original 90210 lasted a decade because it had eight leads, most of whom had the charisma and natural talent from the beginning. Even when characters didn't have their own storylines, they complemented one another well -- a convincing group of friends and a truly great ensemble. I don't see that happening in 90210 Redux. And much as I would love to watch a new show revolving around older characters, I actually fear it would be difficult for the writers to create interesting storylines. Daytime soaps feature large dynasties, while classics like Dallas (only 14 years) had a hook. What's the hook now that the kids grew up and lead successful lives?

Sherrie Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 06:47 PM EST

Jennie Garth and Jessica Walter are the only ones who seem to be capable of acting.

AnnaLynn McCord and Tristan Wild show some promise but the rest of the young cast need to get some acting lessons pronto--I cannot get through an episode without cringing multiple times at Grimes' inability to act without using excessive eyebrow movement.

Writers must really add some wit to their writing--a la Stephanie Savage or Josh Schwartz. "I'm breaking up with us" is cringe-worthy at best. Storylines need to be fleshed out--writers need to remember quality, NOT quantity--the pilot's goal seemed to be to cram as many plotlines, no matter how ridiculous, as possible into two hours. (Which failed, quite miserably). Characters need to be developed before introducing new ones (Ty, who? Adriana, what?).

It's gonna take quite a few miracles for this show to work but I'll keep waiting, for the sake of Garth and Walter.

bb Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

Throw in a hot male/male romance. Maybe an earthquake. Kill off that weird looking girl from Nip/Tuck.

Dee Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

I would fire anyone who wrote and approved of the cringe-worthy flirtation scene with Annie and Ethan outside the bowling ally talking about The Hills. Seriously, that was the worst dialogue I've ever heard.

Give Kelly & Silver better storylines and more screen time; I really couldn't care less about all of the other uninteresting, predictable characters.

Matt Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

This is at best a Web series! It is WAY too cheesy!

Robin Boyko Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

Ok I agree with everyone else. Make Silver the main character and develop her story line and how that whole relationship interacts with Kelly. I love Lucile Bluth, and the principal's love child with blondie's mom sounds interesting but the rest of his family is uber dull. The black adopted kid from Kansas is pretty fake, and I can't stand the main girl Annie. She's a stick and she's boring. Blondie could be interesting. Esp since her and Silver seem to have issues. Develop that and get rid of the Kansas hicks! (but figure out how to keep boozy grandma). Also get rid of pervy teacher with the scruff. He's werid.

ell Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

I thinck like Nicolas, bring us back Heather Locklear

Hypestyle Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

the show has to take dramatic steps to have conflict and romance with as many characters as possible-- with the Tristan Wilds character, a unique yet familiar quandary is apparent-- what to do with a black character in the midst of a 99% Caucasian cast in a drama/soap opera. Despite being ostensibly in the "Brandon" role as a Midwest teen transplanted to Beverly Hills culture, he has yet to have any romantic entanglements-- so is he destined to just be a 'buddy' for the girls he encounters? Would the producers give him romances with any white female characters? Would they give him a black girlfriend just to be safe? (needless to say, she wouldn't be a main castmember)-- Already you have people online expressing that they are bored/uninterested in his character-- thus increasing the possibility that the producers will find a way to get rid of him, proving the cliche' that there is little/no place with middle america viewers for black protagonists in these kinds of TV shows..

Hillary Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

I actually liked the second episode a lot better (course, I didn't watch until this past weekend). I like the down-home cheesiness-- that's getting back to the original 90210 that I've fell in love with on SoapNet. We have camp and unrealistic teenagers on other shows like Gossip Girl. I like the mix of camp and realistic story lines. I agree though that it would be nice to have more of the original (bring back Donna and David!) and maybe have those girls gain a few pounds.

Stefanie Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

The "flirty banter" between Annie and Ethan was soooo lame. "I could be a Spencer" "Oh you think so?". Um seriously? How boring! Its like they are too dumb to even have cute flirting.

More Jessica Walter and her friend, I would love to see the oldies up to no good.

More scheming and drama! Everyone is being nice, its boring.

cristina Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

bring JASON PRIESTLY as KELLY'S FIANCE.

Corran Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

I think everyone is quick to let the axe down on 90210. I mean do you guys remember Melrose Place and the original 90210 first seasons? THEY WERE BAD! There have only been three episodes, and you're declaring it a failure. Let it build, let it grow. I dont get why in today's world the first season or first episodes have to be the greatest thing ever in order for a show to survive. Sometimes a little downtime and maturity of a show could make it better. Patience is required here.

Chriss Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

What would make me keep watching the new 90210? If they got Brian Austin Green.

wtfnyc Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

Make Shenae Grimes ease off on the White Strips. And eat a cheeseburger. Also: figure out how to transfork AnnaLynne McCord from a hard-living 34 year-old into an even slightly realistic just-turned-16 year old. Maybe a time machine. Or at least a good scrubbing and a hot oil treatment. Finally: More Lucille Bluth!!!

90210fan Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

Bring back old cast...thats what will work.

Leslie Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

Brenda, Brenda, Brenda! I quit watching the original when she left. I prefer story lines with the old cast to the new kids. The new kids are flat and do not interest me at all and maybe that's because I'm old (34), but it seems silly and superficial or like the writers are trying too hard. Better diaglogue would definately help. If they need pointers, see Joss Whedon - he knows how to do it!

Deids Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

Where was the option on the poll to include more Jessica Walters? They moved out to CA to take care of the boozy grandma, and she's nowhere to be seen in the Family Night episode? I know it seems like a given, but still...

Ms. Puddy Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

I think one thing would help is just give the show time for it to finds its way.

Ruben Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

I think you can save the show if it was more like Veronica Mars. The kids from Kansas shouldn't have been so quick to fall in favorably with everyone at the high school. We should have more of a rich kids versus poor kids vibe like V. Mars did. Obviously not to that extreme, but some of these kids could have been humbled in an unshallow way.

Pamela Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

I was a huge fan or the original and I loved Shannon Doherty! The show changed in a bad way after she left and although I still watched, it became more like Melrose Place with increased bed hopping, etc.

So when I heard they were redoing 90210, I thought..."This is going to be a disaster!" However, when I heard Shannon and Genie would be returning, I knew I had to watch. So I did, and I was terribly disappointed that there was barely any Shannon Doherty at all. She wasn't even in the second episode.

The only character that makes sense from the new cast is Erin Silver, the rest are kind of boring. I always loved Rob Estes, but his character is dull as principal. I also think the bi-racial family aspect is cheap and rather unbelievable.

I doubt that an adopted black kid would feel so at ease in the super white bread land of 90210, but that is just my opinion.

We need to know what happened to Dylan, Brandon, David and Steve! If this show continues, they need to step it up.

atl Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

I agree with the posts that the story line should have been around Silver and not a couple of kids from the mid-west. Also, they've these great cross-over hints like the principal and Kelly being past friends and him and Naomi's mom having a kid. That's interesting stuff. Unfortunetly, I do not care for the acctress that plays Naomi, I didn't like her on Nip/Tuck and like her even less on 90210. Spice up the story lines and stop focusing on the mid-west kids and the show has hope!

K Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

1) Just make it the Kelly and Brenda show -- focus more on the older characters (and given them better storylines)
2) Refocus the story on Silver, who is the most interesting of the teens
3)Bring more attractive guys onto the show...I'm sorry, but in a show with so little substance, I want eye candy. And the guys on the show, while not bad looking, or nowhere in the vicinity of Gossip Girl hunkiness.
4) Give us drama, not melodrama.
5) Better (less cheesy) dialogue
6) But it after Gossip Girl.
7) Shake us up early by killing one of the major characters off, or doing something really drastic.
8) Better clothes.

peaches Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

The second episode was HORRIBLE!! Gossip GIrl has the clothes, the scandals, the soundtrack and the stunning cast. 90210 has, well, uhm. It has Jessica Walter and Kelly Taylor and it needs more of them!

MelinCali Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

I wasn't a viewer of the original 90210, so my perspective is just from a normal TV watcher and from someone who just has tips for a show, not a nostalgia show, per se.

- The show is locked in another era. It's 2008, not 1994.
- No diversity. A token black person in a white family is not sufficient. It's LA. Where are the Persians? Asians? Latinos? I'm sure they exist in BH.
- Storey lines about wholesome families are boring.
- Father sucks. He's too Ward Cleaver and it's boring.
- Scruffy teacher comes across as pervy, not endearing.
- Characters are static, even the much beloved Silver character.
- There's no grit. Dad cheating on mom and mom knows it, is played and boring.
- Writing that has teens say "I'm not breaking up with you." Pause. "I'm braking up with us." Thoughtful pause.
- Even though I didn't watch the original, I still would rather see the original characters. That's how boring the new ones are.

Tommy Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

You people have all overlooked the obvious: more Linda Gray! She had a cameo in the first episode and looked fantastic. Viva la Sue Ellen!

Cory Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

I agree with the other Silver-lovers. Make her the central character, since she is one of the best. However, I disagree with those who dislike AnnaLynne McCord. I actually like her as well and I think she plays Naomi well. So far, I don't really care either way about any of the other characters except Kelly.

r2d2 Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

The problem with 90210 2.0 in addition to the lame-o writing and horrid acting (save Jessica Walter, Jennie Garth and the lovely Jessica Stroup) is that it is almost copying the original's idea of a family from the mid-west moving to Beverly Hills.

The show should have revolved around Silver...seeing how she is Kelly's sister and her friends at school. Silver's story is far more interesting and would please both nostalgia hounds and new viewers alike given good writing. Alas this did not happen and the show is really bad.

One thing that really annoys me other than AnnaLynn McCord's atrocious, atrocious acting is Shane Grimes constant wide-eyed open mouth grin thing that she does in every freaking scene. The girl can act...loved her on Degrassi:TNG but my land she grates me here. She's playing Annie as if she is Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz completely in awe of everything around her.

Could have had sooo much potential but its LAME-O!!

Bring Valerie Back From Buffalo Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

More in jokes! i loved it in the first episode when Hannah Zuckerman-Vasquez is reading the news(obvs a nod to the kid andrea and jesse had) and the teacher says something to the effect of, "What is she, 30?" (obvs a nod to how all the old 90210-ers, esp. Andrea looked way older than they were). They should try to bring back more old characters-if they can't get the regular old cast they should at least try for Claire or Matt

NY Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

Bring more of the old schoolers back. That's the only reason I'm watching it now.

pat Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

Less parents, more teens. Also, put it on Monday nights after Gossip Girl. The one redeeming thing about 90210 is that it's kind of sweet and innocent when compared to GG. It's a nice respite, but you can't appreciate as much a day later. At least the 90210 kids actually act like they're in high school.

Melinda65 Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

What would make me watch 90210? Cash. Lots and lots of cash.

cbc Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

Stop having the network involved in every situation especially script rewrites. From reading the EW article it seems that the CW is ruining its own show by being too involved and not just letting the writers do what they want.

It's happened many times and when the show gets cancelled the network will have no one to blame but themselves.

NCC Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

I agree with Cynthia. Make Silver the central young charactor. The main girl is too "Vanilla". Silver is the most interesting and ties into the original.

Phil Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

sell on itunes, sorry! Not tel

JS Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

The plot is flat and the characters are flatter. This show needs to embrace its real potential! The "in" 90210 has over its competitors is its built-in fan base: people who loved the original! We're probably the only ones still watching this drivel in the hopes of seeing Kelly, Brenda, Silver, Jackie, Hannah, or anyone else we recognize. These familiar characters should have been the focus of the show, with all other characters as satellities of their storylines.

Stef Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

I think it needs to develop more compelling relationships. Nobody on the show seems to connect with another yet in any real way. It is too superficial; we've seen it before.

Cynthia Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

The central "young" character really should be Silver, not Annie and Dixon, since she has connections to the original show. More Old School cast members too! BRING BACK BRANDON! :)

Marcelo Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Make Ty Collins (Adam Gregory) and Ethan Ward (Dustin Milligan) gay and in love with each other. And some shirtless/bottomless scenes of the two won't kill.

Cougar Diva Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

How about Ethan and Dixon shirtless ALL THE TIME? They're both legal in real life, so it's totally ok. :) Also, go for the camp! Everyone liked the old-school 90210 'cause it was so over-the-top. No one wants to be reminded of their painful zits-and-all high school experiences. Bring on the cheese!

coco Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Give each girl a baconator!!!
So skinny!!!!
There's no way that the kids form middle of nowhere are part of the popular so soon.

alexandra Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

how about...drop the show altogether? i find it ridiculous that with the 80 bazillion writers trying to make it in hollywood that the suits would revert to doing an old show over again. come ON. there's gotta be some more interesting, more original ideas floating around hollywood...like some of the other posters have said - we already had "90210 - the new generation" with "The OC" (altho, i will admit to liking "The OC" SOOO much more than the original "90210")

Phil Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

Hwtas up guys!? I've been super busy most of the summer to make regular PWatch posts, but like the Fall Season premieres ...I'm BACKKKK! First off, an instant way to win INSTANT new 90210 viewiers is to tel the episodes on iTunes. It worked for first GREEK and then GOSSIP GIRL, yes both shows aren't earning superstar status ratings, however, their fanbase learned if they missed episodes, they could purchase them there and catch up! This is NOT the case with 90210, and just cause they reaired both the 1st & last week's eps on Thursday nights, doesn't exactly help an over-worked and maxed out college student trying to get into watching the show! Secondly, I hope they don't do this since Serena's lil' brother (how young is he again?) Eric on Gossip Girl is already supposed to be gay, but there was talk of one of the characters on the new 90210 being either gay or a lesbian. Perhaps the "new" gay character can cause some controversy in the still hot-bed that is high school!

Lisa Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

the creative team is banking on nostalgia - which will get people to try it but not buy it. All of the characters need to be written better in terms of being 3-d humans with feelings. they can't all be so confident and breezy - it's impossible to relate to them. all personal issues are resolved too fast, without any struggle. one minute there's a problem then poof! all better. sure we like to laugh and we like there to be a manipulative character or two - but these characters are all currently one dimensional and very adult.

ronda Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

I think JJ hit it right on the head. All of the kids of the original had problems adjusting and fitting in.

Brandon-pressure to drink
Brenda-feeling she didn't have the right clothes (remembered she consdidered stealing to have those desinger duds?), right hair (remember the botched dye job?)
Andrea-feeling she was left out and not part of the gang b/c she was from the "wrong" side of the tracks.
Cindy-not wanting a maid, feeling like she had nothing fullfilling to do with her time (with B&B being in high school she probably she have gotten at least a part time gig)

KLD Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

How to fix 90210: Make it 'Privileged'

JJ Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

One of the reasons why the old 90210 (and to a lesser extent "The O.C." and "Dawson's Creek") were hits was that the outsiders actually had some difficulty in adjusting to the new world. Here, Annie and Dixon after 1 week have a huge network of friends; they are even succeeding in extracurriculars (Annie has the play, Dixon has the lacrosse team). It might benefit the show to have Annie and Dixon, as well as the parents, have real difficulty adjusting to 90210, not just for "family bowling night," but maybe in terms of class struggle (academic for the kids, monetary for the parents). And didn't the family move out there to save the grandmother? Maybe the writers should actually discuss that storyline rather than totally abandon it within 2 episodes.

Snarf Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 11:08 AM EST

Less Annie, more Silver & Kelly
The chick from Nip/Tuck is a cliche.
Less Dixon, more Ethan, George, and even Ty.

Alan of Montreal Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

re: Jessica Walters.

Or how about bringing back Arrested Development!

Allyson Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

No Brenda, No Allyson...End of Story...

TheFifthSister Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

I watched it for one reason, and one reason only. To see Shannen Doherty and after all the hype of the premiere, Brenda fans were robbed. She was in it for about a total of 3 minutes.

For me it's trying to hard to be better than the original and it's failing. Beverly Hills was the first of it's kind, this new 90210 is among many that are the same and that just try to copy each other.

All I'm watching it for is Shannen. Although, I actually quite like Silver as well!

CAB Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

You already included the solution - more Jessica Walters! How about actually giving her a plot?

LisaM Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

The show isn't bad, it's just not interesting in any way. The characters and storylines are bland and predictable. The only exciting thing was Jessica Walter's performance.

Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

Um... stop resolving storylines at the end. Also, by trying to make these twists that seem like they'll be surprising the viewers, they're getting rid of any potential drama. Naomi's mom knowing about the affair? It's not 1962. She would have divorced that man and gotten a huge settlement... and perhaps she will, but by not having her freak out, we're being deprived of drama.

I agree with Chantal... it seems like everything happens too fast. Annie should not already be Miss Popularity. I think the show has too many characters, and it's not focusing on developing any of them. It tries to split up the time evenly, and instead, winds up not saying much about anyone.

Also, the Adrianna storyline is so predictable, it's like they're not even trying to hide what's going to happen. Nix the character all together, we know she's a guest star at best, and we're not going to be emotionally invested in her.

The show could still be salvaged... but it needs work to join the ranks of the others.

Ryan Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

The stories are fine, if not a little predicatable. But the scenes are too short. If they got into it more, it'd be more interesting. Loving Silver and the scene with Kelly, Silver and their mom could have been so much more. I would like them to mention their brother David and his wife Donna to give us a little bit of what happened to the originals. And enough of the who is the baby daddy story. It'd be more interesting if one of the old guys was actually going to appear

Shaun Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Bring back more of the original cast, or at least legacy characters, like Hannah. Kelly and Brenda sharing screentime is the only reason I've watched. Silver is the most promising of the 'new' characters. Lori Laughlin and Rob Estes are prime-time suds pros, I think the writing needs some serious help. Is this what Rob Thomas had in mind????

Mike Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

Am I the only one who thinks the problem is that it's too much like the original? Not in terms of specific story, but in tone. Have you watched the original lately? In retrospect, it's just as predictable and in many instances, pedestrian as this version - it wasn't a real 'sudsy' show like Melrose or Gossip Girl (except in later years) and frequently had 'message' storylines. It was a low key soap, and since then, we've become used to a lot more melodramatic soapy shows, even in our reality shows like "The Hills". 90210 needs to ramp up the suds and realize it's 2008, not the early 90's.

anne Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

Make it less realistic and more soapy. Not as campy as GG but not as issue laden as Degrassi or South of Nowhere either. But somewhere in between please. And why can't Naomi stay the villain - does really have to become the "poor little rich girl"

Chantal Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

You know what, I feel we already relive 90210 the real comeback of the show and it happened not so long ago and it was called THE OC.

Ok so season 1 was the top followed by season 4, I had some souvenir of the show but watching them all again made me realise that it had it the "california" vibe perfectly. From the town, houses, habits, parties and values we would feel the rich california and on the people side; never a show incorporated adults/teens the way THE OC does. The parents weren't just parents empty and full of "cheesy parent values" like family night. It felt real and compelling.

In two episode, 90210 would have us believe that the new kids already have best friends with whom they do night swim with laughter and parents already to cool they even nickname their children's friends.

I tell you what they could do; make caracters that makes us want to care. Right now I feel like I am a passive watcher. I don't care. You want a sucessful show: MAKE US CARE.
