Michael Phelps: Olympic Stud of the Day

Aug 16, 2008, 01:09 PM | by Amy Wilkinson

Categories: Olympic Stud of the Day, Olympics, Sports

Michaelphelps_l We knew this day was coming. We held out as long as we could (honest!), but who else could be our Olympic Stud of the Day but the unstoppable Michael Phelps? The 23-year-old human fish not only captured his seventh gold medal in the 100M butterfly, tying Mark Spitz's 36-year-old record for most golds won in a single Olympiad, but Phelps did it by the narrowest margin possible — one one hundredth of a second. The race was so infinitesimally close, that if it weren't for the electronic touch pads fixed to the pool wall, no one would have believed Phelps had finished first. (His own mother was waving two fingers signaling a silver medal finish.)

What made his seventh win even more jaw dropping (and believe me, my jaw dropped), was the fact that at the turn he was seventh out of eight swimmers. He made up significant ground (or would it be water?) in the final seconds, but when frontrunner Milorad Cavic of Serbia reached for the wall while Phelps was in the midst of his final half stroke, it looked as though the University of Michigan student's dream of eight gold medals was done for. But this is Michael Phelps we're talking about. The phenom inexplicably managed to circle his beanstalk arms around and touch the wall just before Cavic could glide to victory. Races just don't get better — or closer — than that. Phelps will have the chance to best his and Spitz's record tomorrow as he swims his last race, the butterfly leg of the 4 x 100M medley relay. Whether he wins or loses, Phelps has accomplished something only one other person in history can say he's done. And in my book, that's pretty neat.

Honorable mentions: Though Phelps stood atop the medal podium, it was the tall, dark, and dreamy silver place finisher Cavic and blond bronze medalist Andrew Lauterstein of Australia who held my attention. Meanwhile, another swimmer, 41-year-old mom Dara Torres, deserves props for halting the start of her 50M heat until a fellow competitor could slink into a new suit after hers ripped. And on the track, Jamaica's Usain Bolt ran his quarter final 100M dash in a speedy 9.92 seconds but made it look as though it required no more energy or concentration than a Sunday afternoon jog through Central Park.

Now it's your turn: Nominate your own Olympic Stud of the Day* — or second ours — below. (Then click here to check out our winning Studs from the previous days in Beijing.)

* Not just a man or woman who turns us on. (Necessarily.)

I'm Canadian and I love Phelps! I get so happy when I see him compete. He is amazing, truly an extrordinary talent. He and people like him are what the Olympics are about.

Laurie Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

To the person below, you say "buttaface"; I say he's unconventionally handsome, which I find vastly more interesting and distinctive than any bland pretty boy. And he's only going to get more handsome over time, unlike many pretty boys.

Jenn Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 12:28 AM EST

Man. All this hoopla about who really won . . . maybe I'm wrong, but I thought there was a sensor on the pool wall that helped determine who won. Like a touchpad. I coulda swore that's what it was. But I could be wrong.
mmmmmmm Michael! Olympic Stud of the Year!

Melinda65 Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 11:07 PM EST

I vote that "Thank God" posts his (or her) picture so we can pass judgment on how goofy-looking he (or she) is. Because, you know, what really matters is what a person looks like. One person's "goofy-looking" is another's "adorable."

anonymous Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

YAYYY! Trying hard not to sound like an overexcited fangirl, but it's hard not to, seeing as Phelps won his 8th gold at last. But the .01 race will always be the one burned into my brain whenever I think of Michael Phelps. I nearly fell off my bed while watching it live.

And to all the naysayers; if you watch the slow-mo underwater video, it's clear as crystal that Phelps touches it before the Serbian swimmer did. Enough said. Congratulations, Michael Phelps!

Steve Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

Okay, "thank god," I wasn't sure what it would take to win the gold for "Most Inane Comment of the Day," but man, you really cleared out the field.

Yeah, I totally see your point...HOW DARE Michael Phelps have a close, loving, respectful relationship with his mother?!?! What a perv!!

Or maybe the perv is you...in seeing the worst in something as positive as a mother and son in a loving, supportive relationship only lowers the bar around here.

And of course his mom went to the Games. I'm sure that if you ever actually achieved something in this life, you mom might support you too. Then again, given that all you're good for is making loser comments on a comment board, is that Mama Thank God that I hear cheering wildly from the sidelines?

Kiesha Coleman Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

I would like to say to Micheal CONGRATS!!!! i know that there is no one else in the world that can do what you did and i'm just glad i got a chance to witness it. i hope everyone now knows that dreams can come true and never say never. SEE U IN LONDON:)

nunya Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

michael phelps is good-looking -- body and face. all those saying otherwise must look like fat bastard.

Kasia Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

Um, 2buzzy, Michael Phelps did touch the wall first. After an appeal by Serbia they re-watched the footage frame by frame just to ensure the results were accurate. So yeah, Michael Phelps did win the gold fair and square without a doubt.

2buzzy Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

i want to say phelps congrats. but when you look at the 7th Medal one can say that if you did not have the tidal wave causing Burst at the end that blocked the refs eyes with your fingertips barely reaching the platform then I might have to say you actually in reality won silver. Cavic decided not to pursue gold and take silver biting his tongue. if the FINA judges and whomever looks at it close cavic touched as did phelp at same instant that is a tie. that is until the wave came rewind it watch for yourself. I did and the camera doesnt lie. We do. Phelps looks goofy but a lucky goof at that!

danielle Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

You should have held Phelps until his 8th, then made the whole relay team OSOTD. That way Piersol would get his due too! They deserved it way more than the obnoxious Bolt.

Dee Dee Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

"thank god" You're the one who is creepy, trying to make innuendo about phelps and his mom. Shame on you!! And who cares what Phelps look this. This is sports, not entertainment, and those races were a big deal and thrilling to watch.

maple jenny Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

The British swimmer who broke Janet Evans' record--oldest around, about 20 years--deserves Stud. I think her name is Adlington.

Oh, *what*ever Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 10:02 AM EST

To "thank god" who said:

"What really made me mad is last night when he got his seventh. It was such a close race it was basically a tie."

Phelps touched the wall at 50.58 seconds. Milorad Cavic touched it at 50.59. That's not a tie. That's Phelps winning fair and square. Also, it's the Olympics. No one is just "given" a gold medal. One has to earn it. Cavic didn't because he chose to glide to the wall while Phelps actually, you know, *kept swimming* and therefore touched first. It never fails to amaze me that no matter how remarkable someone's achievement at something is, there's always got to be at least one person trash-talking it like it doesn't matter. Congrats, "thank god" -- you're that jerk for today.

Mark Spitz Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 09:36 AM EST

now what do i do?

Coach's Mistress Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

I'm also glad that the Michael Phelps hoopla is over (but it will really never be over). I'm glad he gave credit to his relay teammates. He could not have done it without the equally fabulous Hansen, Lochte, and PEIRSOL!

Isaac Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

Phelps any day

Snarf Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 08:04 AM EST

8 for 8! Awesome.

As for David's comment, what do facts have to do with it when your bitching and complaining?

Tom Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 01:58 AM EST

Wow! Obviously David doesn't read about the stud each day. Go not checking past watches before making a lame comment! Booo!

Kath Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 01:53 AM EST

Actually, David, Yang Wei was Stud of the Day just recently.

David Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 01:34 AM EST

Wow! not an Asian for stud of the day in sight! Go racism! booo!

David Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 01:33 AM EST

Mad Cow Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 01:16 AM EST

I have to nominate some of my fellow Canadians for Stud of the Day:

1. Wrestler CAROL HUYNH who won Canada's first (finally!) 2008 medal - and a gold, no less - in the 48kg category. (We actually won our first three medals, a gold, silver, and bronze, within one hour of each other!)

2. Swimmer RYAN COCHRANE who won bronze in the 1500 freestyle, which is Canada's first Olympic swimming medal since 2000 (and he's kind of shy and awkward in interviews - totally cute!)

3. MIKE BROWN, another swimmer who nearly won bronze in the 200m Breastroke after breaking a Canadian record (but really, he's just exceptionally good-looking).

4. DONOVAN BAILEY, who's not actually competing, but he's doing an excellent job of Track & Field commentary on CBC (and his 1996 win of the 100m sprint is still tremendously exciting to watch).

And just because, Australian swimmer IAN THORPE who hugged Debbie Phelps in the audience when Michael won gold #8 (I also miss his full-body black swimsuit).

thank god Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 01:02 AM EST

that Phelps swims at the Olmpics are over. I got so sick and tired of NBC mentioning it every second. What really made me mad is last night when he got his seventh. It was such a close race it was basically a tie. Would it have killed them to give the gold to the other swimmer.

Also he is not that goodlooking actually he is kind of dorky looking. The stuff with his mom is creapy it kind of reminds me of the D.H. Lawrence book Sons and Lovers. He is a man why does he need to go home after the olmpics to mom especially since she is in China with him.

Tina Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

Michael Phleps has one of those "buttaface". At least he has a body.

Heatherer Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 11:41 PM EST

Of course Phelps... but I nominate Roger Federer for overcoming a loss in singles to win gold in doubles today (or yesterday I guess) with Stan Wawrinka! He was more adorably gleeful than I have ever seen him. Also Eamon SUllivan, the swimmer from Australia for being smoking hot!

Katja Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

Hooray for Michael Phelps!!! Ew.com, you totally should have held off on picking him. :) Now that he's got his record-breaking 8th gold medal of these Games, he deserves a special stud title!!! Agreed that he is the Stud of the Olympics, not just the day. Although I do love Dara Torres! Congrats to her for her silver medals. And if I may, I'd like to nominate Michael Phelps' mother as OSD for the week-long heart-failure-to-extreme-joy emotional roller coaster she must have gone through. She wins the gold for nerves of steel..not even Nastia Liukin's mother could stand to watch her kid compete. :)

rachel Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Check out this short video clip. It's a little-known, skinny 15-year-old by the name of MIchael Phelps just moments after qualifying for his first Olympic team. This is the moment he began his Olympic journey.

phelpsphan Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

Phelps for sure!!

donner Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

how...in the world....did he win that race???? a-MAZE-ing...we were yelling at the TV and thought he'd lost, when the graphic turned his name as '1', it was shocking!! Even the NBC nightly news had to cover the Omega timing story to show how it is possible that the equipment got it right...so freakin' awesome...not only the fact that he's won 7, but HOW he's won 7...

jaime Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

AMEN~

TC Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

Well, nobody deserved it more yesterday than Phelps. Well done. Also, special mention to Cesar Cielo Filho, who won the 50m freestyle. While I've appreciated seeing Phelps on the podium every night, Filho's reaction to winning and medal ceremony has to warm even the coldest of hearts.

Monee Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

one more to go...but yeah, this HAD to be Phelps' day. He did what many didn't think he could--come from BEHIND for a change. Not to mention, it was karmic revenge for Cavic's comments earlier in the day.

chamlo Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

I would like to nominate the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, for Olympic Stud of today. Not only was his win effortless, but he broke a world AND olympic record and the 100 is not even his sport (200m is his specialty). And his shoelaces were undone. Irie!

Chella Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Did you see the interview with Debbie Phelps this afternoon on NBC? She talked about how Michael was teased as a kid because he was so awkward looking. She was crying, and I was crying. Not only is he this amazing swimmer, but he really seems like a good guy.

Melinda65 Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 04:21 PM EST

I'm sorry, but Spitz lost a lot of respect from me when I read an article in which he was complaining about not being invited to Beijing to watch Phelps attempt to break his record, and how he was in Athens but was never shown on camera; that it was demeaning to him to be at the Games anonymously. He can't just buy a ticket and go--he has to be invited and given a bunch of hoopla or it doesn't count.

Sarah C Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 04:04 PM EST

I already know who should play Cavic in Phelps's any-day-now TV biopic: Bobby Cannavale. You know, minus 10 years.

For tomorrow's OSD, I'm still holding out hope for Aaron Peirsol (not Piersol, people!). Still studly even after giving the gold to Lochte in the 200 Back. I can't wait to see him in the medley relay.

Michelle Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

Michael isn't just SOTD he's Stud of the Olympics! But that race last night was incredible! I couldn't even watch the last ten meters. Then watching Michael's face when he realized he won...priceless!

Mary Cullen Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

Michael Phelps is freaking unbelieveable! He really is just, awesomely amazing:)
GO PHELPS!!!!

sam Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

The perfect choice for today--it was a great evening. I was so glad to see that Mark Spitz has not only aged very very well (I recall my school girl crush on him--sigh), but he is still a gracious and eloquent man. And Dara was incredible in and out of the pool last night. What a great evening for sportsmanship and history.

AA Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

Good on the Phelps pick--it was unbelievably close! Could someone enlighten this Canadian, though? This morning, at 9:30 central time, I watched what I thought is generally considered the premier event of all summer Olympics: the 100M men's sprint final. It was a phenomenal race, but when I flipped to NBC, they weren't even showing it! I mean, I realize it wasn't primetime, but it was a Saturday morning! I won't spoil who won it (in case you haven't seen it), but I would recommend tuning in, if it hasn't aired yet! Because I know who I want the next OSOTD to be!!

andreia Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

eu achei vc muito bonito um beijo de boa sorte nais suas competições

Martin Haro Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

OMG - he didn't swim the distance, but have you SEEN Britain's Mark Foster.
Oh dear - I need a tissue.

KG Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

i concur. phelps' come-from-behind finish was a stud moment. and cavic is yummy. mmm. mommy phelps is adorable too. i literally LOL'd when she collapsed to her seat as she couldn't believe her son got to first place. the guy in front of her was HILARIOUS!

Crystal Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

As I clicked on to popwatch this a.m., I was like "it's gotta be Phelps - gotta be!" that race last night was...whoa. Here's a great column about it in the Times:

http://www.latimes.com/la-sp-olyplaschke16-2008aug16,0,2068271.column

Stud of the Day indeed!

MsDaisy Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

I can't argue with the choice of Phelps...but darn, that Mark Spitz is still pretty studly himself 36 years after winning his 7 golds. I was 13 yrs old at the time and I admit to a major crush on Mr. Spitz.

Jenn67 Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

Thank you for mentioning Dara Torres in your OSOTD. When she asked the judge to delay the start so the other swimmer could get into a new suit, I was so proud. I am a 41 year old mother myself (who does NOT even closely resemble Dara's physique...I wish!) and I was so impressed by her sportsmanship. It was truly the mom in her who came out at that moment, making sure everyone had a fair shot. I tell ya, mothers should rule the world.

Patty Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

Can Phelps' swim pants ride any lower on his hips - yikes! Luckily they are far too tight to ever fall down.
BTW he was never a UM student, just swam for Club Wolverine. We would love to claim him as our own, but it isn't technically true; he just trained here in lovely Ann Arbor.

Kelly Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

Phelps definately deserves the title today. That was an amazing race and it was great to hear all the praise Mark Spitz gave to him afterwards and Michael truly is a gracious winner.
