Jason Lezak: Olympic Stud of the Day

Aug 11, 2008, 09:21 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Olympic Stud of the Day, Olympics, Sports

Relaylezak_l Sunday's coverage of the Olympics brought multiple contenders for Stud of the Day, as usual. Would it be U.S. gymnast Nastia Liukin, who fell on her dismount from the bars but had a routine that badass that she still made it into the individual finals of the event? Or maybe Bob Costas, who grilled President Bush about America's relationship with China, then asked him if he was going to any more events before he left Beijing: "I'm going to swimming here, if you'd ever let me off this set..." the president joked. "You are dismissed," Costas said. (How many congratulatory text messages do you think Costas received after uttering that sentence?)

Of course, neither Liukin nor Costas could compete with Jason Lezak, who swam the fastest split in 4X100M freestyle relay history to keep Michael Phelps' hope of winning eight gold medals at the games alive. (Pictured left to right are Cullen Jones, Lezak, Phelps, and Garrett Weber-Gale.) I just watched the race, a new world record, for the fifth time and got chills as Lezak, the U.S. anchor, chased down France's Alain Bernard in the final seconds. Bernard, you'll recall, is the Frenchman who'd been quoted as saying, "The Americans? We're going to smash them. That's what we came here for." (If anyone's interested in quoting me watching that race live on my couch, I actually yelled "USA!" in a moment of intense patriotism. Then I screamed something like "Suck it!" in a moment of extreme unsportsmanlike conduct.*)

Nominate your own Olympic Stud of the Day** — or second ours — below. (And click here to check out our winning Studs from the previous two days in Beijing.)

* To make up for that, I will point out that Bernard finished first in NBCOlympics.com's Ab Fab: Guess the Swimmer gallery.

** Not just a man or woman who turns us on. (Necessarily.)

Hi is your name Jason?

kathryn Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 08:02 PM EST

Kris- I yelled suck it too! haha. That was the most amazing race I have ever seen.

Delon Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 05:11 AM EST

Jason can do me good anytime! Yummmm.

Kerry Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 04:35 AM EST

Jason's a total stud, and he's also just about the nicest guy you could ever meet. I've had my eye on him ever since he anchored the WR-setting medley relay in Athens. Very psyched to see him finally getting his due props.

kris Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 01:02 AM EST

I totally yelled "suck it!" sometime after I realized what amazing swimming I just witnessed, too. Ha ha.

coveranjou Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

How are the Americans trash talking? It was the French who started it, and then they were sore losers when they lost. If you look at the medal ceremony, Phelps got off the podium to congratulate the French swimmers. The French have done this type of trash talking before. Remember the last World Cup? Trashed the Italians and then denigrated the Italian win. By the way, I'm Canadian and I was screaming "go, go, go!" when Lezak was swimming. Congrats on a great swim. And, yes, the French and American swimmers can come swim in my pool anytime.

kruss Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 06:15 PM EST

I do think Costas had a fine moment after the race. He was reviewing the race and mentioned the French comments about "smashing the Americans", and Bob just said, "au contraire". Nice.

Jenn67 Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

I had the DVR On pause so my hubby could watch the race with me after he ran an errand. however, my son, who watched it in real time, was shouting and came out and said, WE WON! So I knew the outcome before I saw it. However, it was still just as exciting and had me yelling "GO GO GO" even though I knew we'd win (I didn't spoil it for the spouse though. Wasn't that nice of me?)

Jelana Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

Let's see - stud of the day. Lezak for performance, I mean - WOW. Cullen Jones for all the reasons K pointed out (plus he's a real hottie and seems like a genuinely nice guy). But finally -- Phelps' swimsuit is the true stud of the day. A truly amazing engineering feat -- super fast in the pool, and when rolled down, stays up high enough by only like a millimeter to not cause an international incident. For a few minutes, I thought we were going to get an interesting encore to that amazing swim.

Jelana Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

Tate Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

Wow, I totally butchered that. My apologies. I think you all get the meaning. There would have been no better smack in the French-teams' face than to not talk smack after the win, but it wasn't so bad.

I would venture to say that America is hated more for our President and his lovely foreign policy - not some kids that got pumped after breaking a world record and pushed back on competition that was, frankly, quite rude.

Tate Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

Honestly, I was hoping that Phelps & Company would have just said complimentary things about the French - that would have been the ultimate icing victory.

But I don't think they said anything all that offensive - especially in this age of non-sportmanship (at least in professional sports).

I can only imagine the USA-bashing that would have ensued had the French pulled off that win. So it's all good. A little levity, people. They can't all be the friendly rivalry that we had with the Aussie in 2004.

DanOregon Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

Sabre fencer Sada Jacobsen is also impressive.

DanOregon Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Hottie of the Day is swimmer Stephanie Rice of Australia and for Sunday I'll throw in 20-year-old gymnast Alicia Sacramone.

Melinda65 Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

I didn't notice anyone bashing the country of France and all of its people, just the French swimming team, one member of which claimed they were going to "smash the Americans," not even "smash the competition." I'm not sure how the US winning the race is "very dubious," as guli claimed, but I do think it's interesting that because a few people said, "Suck it!" and other things to that effect--aimed at the smack-talkers, not the entire nation--we all deserve to be hated (by the whole world, no less.)

And Mandi? I have to agree that you should keep your political comments out of Olympics articles, in the spirit of the Games.

Karma Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

Hey Guli - SUCK IT!

guli Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST
"you americans should be ashamed how you are cursing the french even though the us team won (although it was all very dubious). no wonder the world hates you. GO CHINA!!!"

WTF? How, exactly, was it Dubious? And which diety put you on your high horse to tell "you americans" what to do?

I've got an idea - try to get your jealousy under control for a minute and relax. We won when the Frenchies said they would smash us. End of story. Sorry you can't handle it.

Betsy Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

Heck yeah! Lezak is definitely the Stud of the Day. He's pretty much the Stud of the Whole Olympics. :D Amazing race.

Laura Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

The US win was impressive because for this race, they went in as the underdogs and no one thought they would win it. Great job and it was a great overall. As for Bush, no matter what you think of his leadership, his genuine love for sports is great. It is not political and his attendance at this event, hanging out with athletes reminds me of when he sat with the athletes in SLC in 2002. For the record, fan of neither Bush or Costas.

To Guli Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

How was the US win dubious? The US swimmers did not swear at the French either. If anything, instead, the French swimmers continued to downplay the great swim by Lezak. They said experience won over talent and mentioned the win was not that big of a deal because it was just a defeat by a finger length. Well, that .08 seconds is a different between gold and silver. Great to see the US win this relay again after losing a close won in 2000 and loss in Athens.

Also, kudos to the entire team! Cullen Jones is also the only second African American to win a gold medal in swimming.

Kari Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

Stephanie T...I second that motion, when I saw Oen I thought to myself "DAMMNNUMMMM"!$%#

snicks Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

"The French were the ones who started this whole smack talk and they didn't back it up! I'm all for good sportsmanship, but saying how you're going to "smash the Americans" isn't very polite either."
You're absolutely right...so take it on the french player who did it...but no, you guys have to turn it into a "french bashing".
shameful.

Jen Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

I gotta tell ya, being a former high level swimmer watching last night's relay in a packed bar in Chicago's Harry Carey's bar (Cubs rocked the Cardinals, yea) was SUPER EXCITING--the ENTIRE bar was screaming at the TVs while this race was going on and when Lezak out touched the French swimmer at the wall, everyone started shouting USA! USA! USA! And it went on for like two minutes. You gotta love the Olympics-it gets a bar full of Cubs/Cardinal fans screaming USA in unison. Awesome job guys--I'm glad you made the French dudes looks like morons.

To guli and snicks Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

The French were the ones who started this whole smack talk and they didn't back it up! I'm all for good sportsmanship, but saying how you're going to "smash the Americans" isn't very polite either. That's like the pot calling the kettle black. GO USA!

jg Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

I was so amzed at Lezak's swim. It was incredible. This is a great article I found on it.
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/946981/michael_phelps_dream_of_gold_is_still.html?cat=14

Emma Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

This was so so SO exciting! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! I whipped out a loud, satisfying "YEAH" when Lezak out touched the French. Phelps reaction was priceless. This is what the Olympics are about!! Nice choice of Lezak as the stud... but I think the whole team should be considered. A stud-machine if you will!

Dave Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

I screamede "Suck it!" as well!!!! That's for trash talking.

Tate Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

I always get a complex when I watch the men's swimming. I'd kill to have bodies like those dudes. It inspires me to start really working out. They really need to air the Olympics non-stop for the rest of my life to keep me motivated. Good show Lezak and company!!!

DK Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I'd like to nominate US swimmer Eric Shanteau. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer in June, but put surgery on hold until after the Olympics. Here's a link to his story http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/conditions/08/11/swimmer.cancer/index.html

Anne Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

I went back to the Ab Fab Board. I not only admit that I am an "Ugly American" when sh*t talk is involved(Snicks/snickers this "WHOOOOO YEAH SUCK IT YOU FROG" is just for you) but that Frenchie has great abs. Hot. Best Abs...that could be the only event he wins at the Olympics!!

DeeDee Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Seeing Jason Lezak stretching his arm to touch made my heart stop but a close second to that moment was the combination of Michael Phelps and Garrett Weber-Gale showing so much joy at realizing the U.S. had won! That interview with Bob Costas and President Bush had so many things going for it including Costas's pace of questioning, overall ability to cover several pressing matters in the world combined with his ability to keep President Bush relaxed while interviewing him. Not a huge Bob Costas fan but have a new respect for him and his "interviewing" skills.

tv Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

Lezak is THE STUD. My heart was beating and I was such amazed that Lezak caught up and passed that French dude......I think Lezak should receive more well-deserved recognition

MikeknaJ Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

No need to inject your partisan politics into an article about Olympic heroes, dear writer. And your inference about Costas' comment of being "dismissed" are a really bad stretch at best. Stick to the sports - if we wanted Bush bashing we could go to the DailyKos.

David Wrightsman Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

Costa's interview with Bush was completely inappropriate. The Olympics should be void of any and all political discussion. NBC committed the biggest mistake ever by allowing such an interview.

mostlyasleep Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

all the swimmers are studs. im carefully watching korea's tae-hwan park who won the gold in the 400m freestyle on sunday morning. what a cutie.

cycler Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

the most AMAZING modern-day Olympic moment I've ever seen! Stupendous! and I was the only one up last night in my house, yelling and fist pumping like I was there in the audience. Very surprised I didn't wake up my husband or kids. Now I feel positively glued to the set for the remainder of the Olympics. The swimming and the US girl's gymnastics team are awesome to watch!! Oh yeah, everything else too!

guli Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

you americans should be ashamed how you are cursing the french even though the us team won (although it was all very dubious). no wonder the world hates you. GO CHINA!!!

snicks Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

"Take THAT you woosie French with your inflated egos"
"chew on that, you snail eating frogs"

thanks for proving my point about ugly americans. it's no wonder the world hates us.
grow up, people.

Stephanie T. Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

Lezak is hot, but Alexander Dale Oen is hotter.

donner Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

The Olympics are shaping up to be pretty exciting, no? I'm enjoying every night I watch, that's fer shur....

Smash me once, shame on...shame on you...Smash me twice...won't get smashed again...

BobSaget Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:20 PM EST

I think the most important story of that race is being ignored by a lot of people. Despite the French teams arrogant attitude Micheal Phelps showed true class and sportsmanship by shaking the hands of each of the French swimmers after they received their silver medals. Even more impressive was after his celebration he consoled Bernard who was still in the pool tired and defeated. Lezak was the stud, and the rest of the relay team deserves props for putting together one of the most exciting moments in sports I've ever seen. But Micheal Phelps showed what a true athlete is.

Kat Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

Props go out to Garrett Weber-Gale for coming in front of the Phelpster to get some camera time - not sure that was his motive, but it worked!

yeah right Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

The only thing I found "wrong" about Costas' interview with President Bush was when Bush said that America doesn't have problems. Are you kidding me?

Lisa Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

I for one was a little worried about Michael Phelps having an X-rated moment on international TV -- he was about a millimeter from losing that swimsuit thing he was wearing. That thing was sitting dangerously low.

Now, if it were Jason Lezak, I wouldn't be commenting. Just wishing.

Carli Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

Awesome race...would have been more awesome had I not accidentally been spoiled by reading a random So You Think You Can Dance message board! Why do the West Coasters not get these things live?

Rasha Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

Swim or Die…we have something in this country called FREEDOM OF SPEECH, therefore if our President screws up our country and leads us into a never-ending war, we can say that. In my opinion, he has made a mess of our country with his terrible decisions and intolerant policies. As an American, I appreciate that I can say that and not be persecuted. Respect isn’t something you blindly receive, it’s earned and for a lot of people, he hasn’t earned it.

I love Bob Costas, and his 17+ Emmys illustrate what a good overall journalist he is. I’m sure he meant what he said purely in jest.

Crystal Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

Combined, all 4 are the uberstud. The race was amazing, but I especially loved when they showed the 2nd (or so) replay and the announcer was still in shock and like "I cannot BELIEVE that just happened!!"

You know it's good when even the announcers are like "holy Sh*t!!"

strickens_girl Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

Lezak is such the stud!! Best finish ever. I was yelling so loud I woke my 5 year old son up. And then he got mad at because I hadn't woke him up to watch the race. He loves swimming. So watched the replays and the medal ceremony before heading back to bed. Yay for mother/son bonding!

K Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

My Olympic Stud of the Day is anyone who isn’t Michael Phelps…I love the guy, but I’m so tired of the hype about him winning 8 gold medals. I highly doubt Lezak had the swim of his dreams just so Michael Phelps could have the chance to win 8 gold medals, lol. He swam like a pyscopath to win the race and show the cocky French Swimmers how Americans roll!

Seriously, my Olympic Stud of the Day is Cullen Jones. Not only is he the 2nd African American Swimmer to win a medal at the Olympics, he was the only one on the anchor team that seemed completely overlooked by the media and fans alike, because he’s not part-fish like Michael Phelps and didn’t swim clench the fastest split time in the race’s history like Lezak. He did, however, swim his heart out and give Lezak the chance to do all of the things he did. I’m all about the guy with heart who might not take the winning shot, but offered up the assist!

Kacey Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

I screamed "Take THAT you woosie French with your inflated egos!" SO excited for the Americans. It was a FANTASTIC race. Hah! We showed you. Don't be doing that smack talk about us any more.

Amelia Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

cut out the bush smack talk. he deserves props for even being there and supporting our country with such enthusiasm. i may be a republican but this is about so much more than politics. so cut it, be an american supporter you jackass.

with that being said i cheered like a 14 year old at a...jonas brothers (right?) concert. Most amazing olympic moment since Kerri Strug. This one is not likely to be topped though.

Go America.

Tina Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

Bob Costas's interview was so disgustingly inappropriate it was sad. If it was anyone else from NBC it would have been fine(like Matt Lauer), but instead you have a sports guy asking political questions, when the president obviously thought he was just there to talk about Team USA.

Boo Bob Costas.

And seriously I love the mens 4X100 team and want to have their babies

Dee Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

Lezak all the way! I screamed so loud last night when they won. Moments like that are why I watch the Olympics.

Loretta Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

Second Lezack! Best race EVER. Guilty of jumping on the couch Tom-Cruise-on-Oprah-style, cheering. Cried watching them celebrate, and again when they got their medals. Simply amazing. Have watched the race again online three times at work today. I can't get enough of watching it. Hopefully they will show it again tonight in early highlights so my BF can see it. The whole team - STUDS ALL.

ah Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

Dude, does anyone here actually believe that "swim or die" is non-American?

swim or die Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Typical ugly Americans, disrespecting and dissing your own president. Whether you agree or not with your own president is not the issue. The issue is a lack of respect in the way he cavalierly "dismisses" his interviewee. Amazingly, the author of this piece agrees with him! Costas is an obnoxious piece of turd. So are you if you congratulated him for his crass behaviour.

You can't even respect your own. And you wonder why the world thinks you Americans are a bunch of d*uchebags...

WELL DONE to the relay team. An epic race awesomely swam.

Anne Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

I did not watch the race last night. After reading Popwatch, I went on a quest to find the entire race. Read the smack talk (France! You know that is not smart! We are Americans (and you saw what happened when we did it at Sydney-oh the shame. And come on, you ARE France.) Found the entire race (commentators were Chinese). Now, I know what happens. Comments are in Chinese. I am at work. And I still jump up and down in my seat. And I still yelled "Smash that, b*tches-yeah yeah yeah" complete with fist pumps (Freely Admit to my "ugly Americanism"). Awesome. Just awesome. And I second the thank you to Phelps for adjusting his swimsuit.

Hap Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

Just like everyone else, I was up and screaming as well. I was a swimmer and I know what it is like to swim the that relay. You are so pumped up, adreline screaming through you veins, you swim your butt off. One other thing, France's Alain Bernard went out to fast and tied up the last 5 meters. If that hadn't happened, we would have lost. I learned that when I was a swimmer.

laura Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

Yes yes yes! to everything you all are saying! but can I add one more thing? .... how about that Chris Collingworth ( I think that is his name ) the sport reporter guy that is always with Costas on the set. How into the games he is!! That is what is what was missing from the O's before ... a guy that actually is enjoying the games!! and showing it.

BullGod Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

Hey Snicks...

SUCK IT!! lol.

Michael Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Totally agree. An amazing race and an amazing swim for Lezak. Have to give props to Eamon Sullivan of Australia for taking the whole field out in world record pace and claiming the 100M Free world record at the same time. Amazing!

anne Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

That race was amazing!! I was jumping up and down in my pjs screaming and yelling so loud that my cats ran for cover. And as much as Jason Lezak was the hero of the race, my heart soared with Michael Phelps half naked getting all excited, flexing his muscles and yelling like a warrior after winning. It was awesome to watch. so cliche and shallow of me I know. Then at the medal ceremony he was the first off the podium to congratulate the French on their silver medals. So even after all the french trash talk he still displayed sportsmanlike conduct. ah, sigh....

Wb Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

What an amazing few days! It seems like World Records are being broken at almost every event. When Jason was on that last 50 I dont think I took a breath until I jumped up off my couch screaming. I can think of no other athletic event that turns me into a constant couch potato for 2 weeks. Thanks Olympics for making me a fat ass.

Yvonne Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

Wow, what an exciting night! A world record breaking race, an international in your face smack down and four All-American physically ripped hotties in a fight for the gold. You bet I was like every proud American cheering thier heart out while watching that race. I even had my own moment of celebratory smack, but it was something like "chew on that you snail eating frogs!". The last thing I have to say is I think Phelps cheering is the best I have ever seen and will be noted as one of the best in olympic history.

BrandonK Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

Correction...double-high-fived. LOL We looked so butch!

BrandonK Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:36 AM EST

Good pick! I high-fived my partner after that race. It was so intense! If Phelps does win 8 golds, he owes a huge debt to Lezak, for sure.

Andie Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

Lezak has been a part of the US team winning relays and breaking records for a while now. I'm glad he's getting some well-deserved recognition.

Catherine Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

To Laurie: Worried is not the word I had in mind!
It was indeed a good battle...and I'm Canadian!!!

Lauren Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:13 AM EST

I yelled 'suck it!' at the tv too. It's all in good fun. I also think I described the race to a friend as "Lezak rocked it" - I never use that term, but there's not alot that describes what he did. Definitely a stud.

Anna Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST

Lezak was awesome, but so was Cullen Jones, who earned his keep by swimming the prelim that Phelps and Lezak weren't even in, and helped set a world record. He is definitely a hottie too

Laurie Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST

Was anyone else worried that Michael Phelps swimsuit was riding danerously low during his celebration? I was cocerned we would have a Janet Jackson. Not that I am complaining. Swimmers are hot!

Elizabeth Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:04 AM EST

Did we HAVE to mike Michael Phelps' mom? Seriously NBC, I really didn't think you could ruin the Olympics for me anymore than you have over the last 3 or 4 olympiads, but that very well be the last straw.
Big WHOO HOO for Lezak! I love watching relays when that happens. Saw one in college - tremendous!

phelpsphan Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

Second Lezak! I would like to thank Michael Phelps for lowering the top half of his suit before cheering for Lezak and celebrating their win. Incredible!

Jackie Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

I think his teammates could get their own reward for their cheering/shouting when they saw they won. I started giggling like a little school girl when I saw Phelps just yelling, arms open. That was CRAZY.

Leslie Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 08:52 AM EST

Definitely Lezak. I jumped up from my couch too! Never done that for an Olympic event before. Now, I'm like Natalie from SportsNight and feeling a little woozy: I've got Olympic fever, baby!

wtfnyc Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

Personally, I wholeheartedly second your "Suck it!!!" (though I personally went with "BURRRRRN!!", Michael Kelso-style). Any time smack is talked like that at the Olympics (inappropriate, IMO), and then karma takes a big chomping bite out of the smack-talkers a$$? Is just a fun day. Plus: Most amazing end of a relay EVER. Jason Lezak is my God now!!! (tm Kathy Griffith)

Coach's Mistress Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 08:46 AM EST

i watched that race last night, too, and I was jumping up and down yelling a more moderate "GO! GO! GO!" It was truly amazing! However, the four of them deserve to be the Olympic STUDS of the day (and STUDS of the entire OLYMPICS!)

Chaddogg Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

I'm surprised my neighbors didn't check on me after I let out my own, Micheal-Phelps-esque primal scream when Lezak touched the wall first! The most exciting Olympics moment I've ever watched -- I mean, the FIFTH place Swedish team beat the previous World Record and DIDN'T EVEN MEDAL!

Every American should watch that race....I doubt I've ever been more proud of our American athletes than I was as Lezak stalked down Bernard with simply super-human speed.
