'American Idol' adds fourth judge

Aug 25, 2008, 11:00 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: 'American Idol'

Karadioguardi_l In what already looks like the biggest format shakeup in American Idol history, Fox announced this morning that the show's eighth season will feature a fourth judge. It's Kara DioGuardi, a songwriter/producer who's worked with past Idol champs Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Hicks (as well as working with Davids Cook and Archuleta, Clay Aiken, Bo Bice, and Katharine McPhee), not to mention Avril Lavigne, Pink, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Natasha Bedingfield, Jewel, Marc Anthony, and a host of others. Plus, she has some contest-judging experience, from MTV's short-lived Idol-esque show The One. Her own attempt at singing stardom, in the duo Platinum Weird with Eurythmic Dave Stewart, didn't really take off, but her credentials as a hitmaker for others are solid, at least.

We're already hearing from Idol producers that a fourth judge creates a dynamic on Idol shows in other countries that's missing here, and that the gender imbalance at the judging table will now be rectified. I wonder whether that means DioGuardi will be just another sympathetic shoulder for the contestants when Simon and Randy are mean to them. I also wonder whether DioGuardi is being groomed as an eventual replacement for Paula, with her introduction this year as a face-saving way to ease Paula out gracefully.

I'm not sure the show really needs a fourth judge, someone whose comments will only cut into the already too-short performance segments. I don't think Idol singers or voters at home need more guidance; the contestants need more singing time than 90 seconds per tune, so that we can better evaluate their performances ourselves. Rather than more advice, they need better advice, but at least DioGuardi has some practical experience in that department.

Tell us, PopWatchers, what do you think of the addition of DioGuardia? Will she be a welcome presence at the table? Will she crowd Paula out? Will she be a superfluous time-waster? Is she what the show needs to rise out of its recent doldrums? Sing out, below.

Justin Castillo Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 04:23 AM EST

She's not replacing Paula. She's going to replace Simon. Remember that he'll last only for 2 more seasons

Peggy Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

why would you think we would want to listen to another fake judge who nobody even cares what they think anyway. All we want is to hear singers doing their thing!!!! Please let them sing longer. You all talk too much and take up too much time. The show is about them...NOT YOU JUDGES!!!!!!!!!

Top rate songwriter?? Top rate vocalist?? Who is this woman anyway? I would not equate someone who has written mindless pop songs for Paris Hilton and Gwen Stefani with the likes of Bob Dylan (songwriting) or Annie Lennox (vocalist). You need to get out more.

Deb Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

The fourth judge, Kara DioGuardi will be an asset to "AI". The show can use an infusion of someone with her artistry - top rate songwriter and vocalist. She has worked with a number of the American Idol vocalists as well as top vocalists in the industry. Although "AI" is a great show, it can always improve. Welcome aboard Kara!

kittie Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

I am hearing rumors that this new judge is proving to be a bad addition to the AI panel. Maybe she won't make the live shows?? Let's hope. I think having a 4th judge makes no sense. Having more time spent getting to know the contestants makes more sense.

Dave Mon, Sep 15, 2008 at 06:32 AM EST

I don't see how this addition of a 4th judge is a good thing for the show. It seems desperate and reminiscent of what all t.v. shows have unsuccessfully done in the past and that is add extra cast members to boost sagging ratings. It doesn't work. As someone in a previous posting wrote, Kara is like the new Cousin Oliver.

Jake Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

Don't worry Paula fans she's not threat to her, it's Simon's ego that is at stake here. I doubt she has much personality as Simon couldn't stand the competition.

What this show needs is a woman who can shake things up. There was a woman judge from a show called PopStars, I believe, who was the 'persona' Simon is modeled after. I'd love to see those two go at it.

Can't remember her name, should have googled first, but she was a warner VIP.

Gemini Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

This is so unnecessary. The producers are oblivious and arrogant. They obviously did not pay attention to viewer feedback. I believe fan consensus was for more singing time and less time on the judges.

Eve Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 07:39 PM EST

Well i think the "trio" have been doing a great job on being judges on Idol which i enjoy listening to & i don't think we need another voiced opinion. I'm sure Kara is very nice but give the singers more time instead of putting another judge in we don't need!

matthew Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 04:51 AM EST

Just let the performers perform, another judge takes away time, and some advice from the judges is often times a waste of time. We know how to judge for ourselves.

Morgan Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

i've never heard of
kara wtever her name is nd i dnt care what she thinks. nobody is going 2 b happy about addin another judge. when u think anout AI u think Randy, Paula, and Simon. it sounds weird having another name in there. this is stupid their ratings are goin to go down. besides this Kara person sounds like a snob y would u want her on the show anyway?

Joanne Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 09:36 AM EST

Once again, the producers insult the AI viewing audience. They have no clue (nor do they seem to care) about what made the show great in the first place. Forcing viewers to endure more inane and predictable comments from the judges is one sure way to continue the downward spiral in their ratings.

Honey Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

Plain and simple answer: STUPID!

Gina Patterson Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

I think Paula, Randy and Simon had a good balance and now that balance will be gone. We have to listen to 4 judges now and I don't care what this new girl thinks! What a stupid idea, I doubt I will watch.

Sherri MacMurray Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

I think that I'll stop watching AI. I have loved this show for years. But all of the 90-second opinions are correct. Randy Paula and Simon are the three judges. Either go back to visiting judges, or let the "stars" that appear occasionally give their opinion. If this is a done deal, I'm "outta here". Somebody needs to let the producers read these comments. Has there been a positive one yet?????

Debi Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

Ok. I just read through all the comments made and here is my thoughts: No more judges...Give all in the audience a voter switch box. At the end of each performance the audience votes. I would suggest phone ins but they can't be tallied as quickly. HUH? Gives the actual contestants more singing time :)

Bev Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Adding a 4th judge is pure b.s. I don't think I'll be watching this season as I can only imagine the judges slobbering all over themselves, creating unneeded drama and taking even more time away from the contestants.

Dregs Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 09:14 PM EST

This is a stupid decision and shows that the producers are desperate to get their higher ratings back. AI's ratings were higher in past because it was a show about the contestants, not the judges. I'm sick of the celebrity mentality and I'm afraid AI has fallen into the trap they once tried to avoid. Adios, AI. It was nice watching you.

D Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

It will add another element of drama to the show. Make it more of a soap opera. The nation will be watching and the ratings will soar even higher. As Jerry Springer once proved, everybody loves dramatizations.

Kariann Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

When Paula judged Jason on a performance he hadn't done yet, the creditability of the show became a major issue. I am surprised TPTB didn't fire her after last season. However, it is RANDY who needs to be replaced! I hope this works out with the 4th judge. Now who will REPLACE Randy?

to: Becca (from grace) Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

Is that you, Kara? Maybe you are a new AI intern being asked to type lavish praise?

grace Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

The show is already too long so I don't agree that the air time needs to be expanded to fit everything in. AI has become nothing but filler. The producers have no concept that simple is best.

Lee Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 08:48 AM EST

they will need to lengthen the time of the show-the singers need more time-we usually leave during the judges comments anyway but like to hear the singers and then we decide who we actually like - not who the judges like.

Becca Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:33 PM EST

I absolutly love Kara DioGuardi! The songs that she writes are absolutly incredible! I can't wait for next season!

donut Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

I agree. Kara is snotty and full of herself. This season will suffer. I don't plan on watching this year.

mufasa Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

this is so ridiculous. I love paula, and every one says "Randy, paula, and simon" it just doesn't work saying "randy, paula, simon, and kara". she seems snobby by her interview. she states "hopefully they won't put anything too hard on me and it will be easy this round, i mean, i don't want to break a nail, oh, paula? could you go peel my grapes for me?"

DavidCDavidA Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

The only way this will work is if they shorted the judges comment time to 10 seconds each or something, or holding up numbers - as the reporter said - how in the world will they fit in more comments from judges in those earlier shows?

Sonia Thompson Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 11:20 PM EST

IF A FOURTH JUDGE IS NEEDED, WHY NOT GO BACK TO HAVING A DIFFERENT GUEST JUDGE EACH WEEK. I THOUGHT THAT WORKED WELL, AND I AGREE THE CONTESTANTS NEED MORE THAN 90 SECONDS.

Okie Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

I don't think this is a good idea. I really think it sucks. I get sick of listening to the judges rattle on sometimes anyway. Adding another to rattle....well, I just don't like it.

hulabaloo Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 06:28 PM EST

God Save The Queen.

Greg Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Maybe the producers still have time to change their mind about making the unnecessary addition of judge #4 after the auditions?? Let's hope. Naw....the Brits are too out of touch with the American viewing audience. Just because other countries have a 4th judge doesn't mean we have to. That's not the problem with the show. The problem is not spending enough time on the contestants.

Camille Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

I think to add another judge would be risky. You have a show that millions watch because they like it the way it is. they like Simon, Paula, and Randy, and bringing in someone new is going to take attention of the contestants which is really what this show was suppossed to be for. You have a winner, leave it alone.

to: Diane (from Frank) Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 06:55 AM EST

The show's producers have no interest in the contestants (which has become obvious over the last several seasons). They are only interested in making money through ever-increasing commercials, on-show plugs, and exploitation of young talent. They are also invested in trying to pull the wool over our eyes by planting semi-professionals (i.e., Carly Smithson/Hennessey). I'm over AI.

Diane Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 06:48 AM EST

I personally think the show will continue to tank. The producers are incredibly arrogant and out of touch, the judges/host are starved for attention, and the contestants....well, the contestants have just become filler. 4th Judge?? How about more time for the viewers to get to know the contestants?

Kara Williams Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 08:56 PM EST

The show should be about the contestants, not the judges. But if they wanted to add I forth judge, I liked the format where the mentors for the kids became the judge for that show. KW

to giggles Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

Actually the second post was not written by me (1st was). It was tasteless, unbecoming and downright rude. KARA

giggles to Kara DioGuardi Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

Your attempt at humor is just as lame as your songwriting.

Kara DioGuardi Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

Of course, for the trio to agree for this change, I have tag team Simon and Randy on-stage in front of the viewing audience. Since neither Paula nor Ryan like girls, they are exempt from participating...

Kara DioGuardi Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

The way it was given to me by the producers, I would be replacing Simon, Randy and Paula. With me around, considering my wisdom and talent, I don't think there would be any need for other judges. This would give you all the extra singing time that you asked for, without needing to be verbally punished by this outdated trio.

Peggy Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

One thing the 3 judges got right this year - narrowing the huge field of performers down to 24. Then American narrowed it down the the "right" top 12. I hope the new judge is as good at doing this. When I watch past seasons on American Idol Rewind it doesn't seem like the talent was nearly as good. But then, maybe better people try out these days. Hopefully guys like David Cook and David Archuletta and Carly Smithson will encourage more almost-pros to try out now. Not just the girl who sang in the high school choir and wants to make it big.

Archuluver Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

They dont need another judge! This is my favorite show ever and I think adding another judge will just ruin it. I like this show for what it is nothing needs to be changed. This is lame

Sheila Dodd Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

I don't think they need to change anything-it seems to be working fine as it is. I love the chemistry between Paula, Randy, and Simon-we don't need another judge!!

Terri Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Stopped voting, and will not pick up the phone until there are limits on numbers of calls allowed. And Simon needs to stop using the show to push his latest discovery. The concept of undiscovered talent is what made the show great in the first place.

David Cook grl Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

hmmmmm not sure about it Simon Paula and Randy are like the American Idol Stamp. Not sure that it'll be good for the contestents by way of singing time downloading them is a pain cause they are already so short

JV Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 06:44 AM EST

Actually I was hoping it would be going the other way, only two judges with CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, and more singing from the contestants!!

Dee Dee Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 06:24 AM EST

I will NOT be watching this season if the producers continue to try and squeeze in time for the contestants in between (what is now) 4 judges' and Ryan's useless blabber.

Newt Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 06:13 AM EST

Anyone hear of the Queen Bee Syndrome? It should be interesting to watch Paula attempt to hold onto 'top woman' status. But, oh that's right, AI is about the contestants, not the judges.

Kath Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 12:38 AM EST

OR - this is stretching maybe, but she did work with Miley Cyrus - Kay Hanley! She wouldn't BS at all.

Kath Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 12:37 AM EST

Lauren Christy, sorry.

Kath Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 12:37 AM EST

I would have preferred Lauren Kristy or Chantal Kreviazuk. Oh well. Maybe she can replace Randy or Paula.

Connie Burleson Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

Maybe she and Paula will complement each other, but I wonder how Paula is feeling about a new addition. What will they do in case of a tie at the beginning of the auditions when they decide who goes on to Hollywood? That will be tricky.

Jessica Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

If you guys remember, a couple of years ago the show had a "guest" judge every week and the theme of the week came with a new judge. The show has changed things up over the past and had a format for 4 judges, at least for one season. I am happy to see someone new and I hope it turns out well for idol. I don't think the show is jumping any sharks when it has the best ratings of any show on television year after year, and I'm sure the addition of a new judge this year will do nothing but increase ratings.

Kotch Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 09:01 PM EST

I think they should've made this girl the judge

http://www.yournobody.com/2008/08/26/why-paris-hilton-should-be-banned-from-tv/

Riddle me this Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 09:01 PM EST

Let me guess....along with the unnecessary addition of a 4th judge, the producers will also add 2 extra rows of swaybots.

giggles to MC Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 08:57 PM EST

I get your point. Kara ("I wrote for Paris Hilton") is definitely quite the insider and there very well could be more plants this season as a result. I am sensing she will also be writing the obligatory lame finale song.

Rhonda Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 08:24 PM EST

Actually Simon is almost always correct with the things he says. Randy has lots of experience and is honest, just not as brutal as Simon. Paula has been in the field and knows what it takes to be successful. Wow everyone needs to lay off my man Ryan he's awesome. As for the 4th judge, I don't quiet understand why or what they do in the case of a tie, but I guess this season we'll see.

MC Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 08:11 PM EST

I wonder how many plants this new judge will sneak into the show....hhhmmmm......

Alice Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

How do the contestants stand a chance with what I presume will be more senseless blabber by FOUR JUDGES? The producers have no clue. The ratings will continue to fall. Cousin Oliver could not save The Brady Bunch and Kara will not save AI. Who is she anyway and who cares.

David Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

This is just stupid. It's not about adding a new judge, it's about the contestants. These producers are really foolish! Adios, AI...won't be watching you in Season 8.

donut Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:43 PM EST

This is a waste of a change. I agree with the Cousin Oliver comment. lol! Idol does not need more time focused on the attention-starved judges. Idol needs to actually focus on the CONTESTANTS. Let me guess....Season 8 will be ripe with flirtations between Kara and Simon. This will lead to tensions between Paula and Kara. Blah blah blah...watch the ratings continue to fall.

supermart Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

"I know Kara, and she speaks her mind - so she will be speaking her mind," Abdul said of DioGuardi's judging technique. "That's a nice way of saying she's bitchy," Cowell sniped, eliciting a "Whooooooooah!" from Jackson. "Then what are you if I'm bitchy?" DioGuardi said. "Sincere," Cowell responded. "I'm sincere too," she said. .... Cowell said they hadn't fully decided how ties will be broken in the audition process. And how will the time-starved show fit in FOUR judges' opinions? "Paula will have to speak less," said Cowell, unable to resist another swipe at his favorite target.

supermart Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

Here's what Simon said today about Kara joining them: "It's like, you know, having dinner with three people for seven years, and getting quite bored of each other," Cowell told reporters. "So it's having a fourth person, new opinion, I think it's gonna be interesting." .......yeah Simon, I'm getting bored of Paundy too!

peaches Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

Kara DioGaurdi = Cousin Oliver

Yep this fourth judge idea coupled with Lythgoe leaving sounds like the death toll for AI!

Amy Rhodes Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Joe,
I wasn't referring to Paula, she is great, sometimes she is too easy on the contestants that shouldn't be singing at all, plus I am a huge fan of Deal, it is the best show on outside of Idol! Marisa is also a Cancer survivor so I give her a lot of respect.

drew Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 03:27 PM EST

Amy... Marisa is in a new film that comes out, she popped up in our news feed, I don't think she would make a good judge but she is cute: http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/hollywoodreporter/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20080822005674&newsLang=en

Theresa Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

Go Randy! I'm a fan and think he does a great job. I would not want to see Randy go. In fact, I like them all just the way they are!

Hazel Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

I would say WELCOME to another judge. I am pretty sick of Paula and Simom. Sometime Ryan should just tell them to "go get a room" They have lost track of the purpose they are there. Our Idols work HARD. Show them some reapect.

Laurie Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

I would welcome anyone who may "nudge" Paula out. In my memory, she has never contributed a constructive comment to the show. While they are at it, how about replacing Ryan Seacrest? He detracts from the quality of the show. I feel his foolishness keeps the show from reaching the higher levels of professionalism. Of course, the judges banter is also foolishness, but Ryan has the responsibility of setting the tone, and he just doesn't have what it takes to set some higher standards.

musicfan5 Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

If they want to "fix" the show give the contestants more singing time and a greater variety of songs to choose from. As Paulagate and others on the board have pointed out, the judges are merely "puppets" and "mouthpieces" for who the producers want to advance. I doubt a fourth judge will bring the fresh perspective so many want. However, I'm in favor of a fourth judge if it means less critique time from Paula or Randy. For sure, next year Randy will "beg off" the show to focus on ABCD or Paula will have new opportunities too good to pass up. I doubt we'll see 4 judges next year. 2009 will be the final year Pandy will be judging.

Smoochie Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

Do they need a 4th judge. NO! But they sure do need someone to replace that power tool Randy. Paula is funny but useless. So now it will be like there are two judges if she has anything reasonable to offer.

joe Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

woops sorry that should read Amy not Gloria....

joe Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Sally - they tried the mentor being a judge on season 2 or 3 (can't remember which) so that's been done. Also past winners have a lot more on their plate then mentoring. Heck most of them still need mentors themselves

Gloria - are you serious, someone who knows what they are talking about... This girl has written songs for some to the top artists out there today, you really think she doesn't understand what makes a good singer and can't give advice, REALLY????

Gloria Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

Sally, you are so right, I would love to see a former Champion be a judge, I would also like to see better performances and have the judges demand better song choices etc.

Amy Rhodes Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I can't believe they are adding another judge, why tweak with a formula that has worked, I would have rather seen open competition, someone who knows what she is talking about like Deal or No Deal suitcase gal Marisa Petroro.

Chuck C Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

Maybe someone else said this, but this looks like the smartest way to bring someone "new" into the mix, and then get rid of someone next year... bye, bye, Paula

Sally Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

Do we really need yet another judge. As you say, all this does is cut into the performance time. However if she motivates Randy to get past his "mad hot vocals dawg" commentary and get back to his first couple of seasons where he actually said something of substance than I'm all for it.

I would have preferred a rotating judging committee however - similar to So You Think You Can Dance. Two "permanent" judges and a different judge every week.

Now Idol needs to work on their mentors - celebrity guests. More current mentors please. More mentor commentary. And one of the mentors should be the reigning American Idol - if anyone can give advice to some on American Idol the current winner certainly can.

Yay! Another mouthpiece for the producers! Less time hearing the singers! Paula, another drink!

WildKAT Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

FINALLY, a smart move by American Idol. The judges last season were so biased toward Archuleta and unfair to the other performers that a NEW and, hopefully, FAIR judge will change the dynamic from outright cruelty - Simon, pandering - Paula, inane and asinine - Randy to something worth listening to beside the emerging artists who are trying to perform. Dump the phone in crap, the swaybots and the boring sniping between Ryan and Snotty Simon and maybe, MAYBE, the show can reanimate itself into something worth watching once again.

dennis phillips Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

how will they break tie votes?

Kari Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

I don't care if they add another judge, but they need to still keep the same amount of time for "judge talk" and not infringe onto the time for the singers. THAT is why we watch, after all.

Val Premo Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

I really don't think a new judge needs to be added to the show...it will take too long to hear their comments......we are mostl interested in the new Idols performing. I hope it doesn't make the show boring listening to 4 judges.

Ashley Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

"Well, at least Paula now has an excuse to drink. "

Snort.

American Idol doesn't need four judges. It has done well with three all these years, what's the point of another one?

Carmen Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

No....we don't need another judge. We need to concentrate on the singers and listen to them. Paula, Simon and Randy are doing just fine. Why mess with something if it isn't broken!

Debbie Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 09:24 AM EST

Oh my god! This is the best news ever. Paula, Randy and Simon have been so stale in the last seasons. They are more interested in critiquing one another as of late. I don't think its a matter of balancing out the sexes, in Canada we have 4 judges, and only one is a woman, but I think they take the critiques more seriously, and have improved their critiquing skills over the years. Paula, Randy and Simon just don't act like they care anymore about what they say. Even Simon, his critiques may be more accurate, but he is often far from being practical or helpful. Hopefully adding a new judge will shake up the dynamics, or she could be sucked into their madness. Let's hope not!!!

Pamela Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:52 AM EST

I loved Idol the way it was. We didn't need another judge to take up time. If Paula is leaving then why not replace her when she is leaving. Love the show hope it has many more seasons to come!

Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:33 AM EST

mmm let's just see how it goes

ronnie d. marquez Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:28 AM EST

No need. I love the combination of Randy, Paula & Simon. Can no longer wait for the next season.

ronnie d. marquez Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:28 AM EST

No need. I love the combination of Randy, Paula & Simon. Can no longer wait for the next season.

james Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:20 AM EST

I think a 4th judge is fine since Randy and Paula stopped giving constructive comments a few years ago. They both really used to. I'm not sure this is the right person, but then I have no idea who she is, I think a singer would be a better choice. Remember people, the judges comments are supposed to be to help the contestants get better, not guide the viewers. I wonder if there is any real need for the show to be live, I think some editing to keep things moving couldn't hurt.

zet Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:16 AM EST

My household is a faithful watcher of Idol. Leave Paula alone. We love the chemistry between the 3. No more judges please. The time will only be more pinched.

susan Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 06:49 AM EST

Wow, Connor Kendel "she's just a pretty face".......do you know her? Do you personally know all her work? What a derogatory comment, just because she's pretty, she's incompetent. And to think, its the 21st century....Britney and Lindsey have done women no favours in this generation....

anne Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 06:29 AM EST

I think they dont need another judge. Leave Paula alone, she is a sweet girl i think her life has become too personal and thats how we judge. she is totally talented and is an endearing person.there isnt enough time or dynamics on the show for another female or judge for that matter. what are they thinking.?the show isnt what it used to be thats fer sure i agree with Chris it is in a state of decline and. i actually believe they are trying to revamp by new people being brought onto the show. its b.s.wont work.they shoudl leave it alone and let us do the judging we know what we like. some of these judges are with their own ideaologies about what music should sound like r & b influence etc. There would be no Michael Bubles and john mayers if it were for some of these judgings if they were on a show like this for instance.

Katie Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 04:29 AM EST

I watch the show because of the dynamics between Simon and Paula, they are what tv is all about.

Ajaan Rob Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 04:14 AM EST

They really need to look at what has worked in the past and just "fine tune" the format. I agree with others that we watch the show for the singers and the guest artist that come on the show. Fox has really never listened to the people who watch the show after season 1, except when they toss off Ryan’s sidekick. So my prediction is a current slide in ratings will continue except for the new Judge bump. I say to Fox… watch your numbers slide to normal levels of other shows within the next 18 months. Then, Fox will sell the show and the new player will fix the mistakes and continue the show for the next ten years. Guest judges would be best, keeping Simon but rotate the other two judges...Keeping the number to 3 is best for all concerned. Then for final show let people watching vote for best judges to start the next new season. Those judges then will be the judges for that season.

Vince Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 03:22 AM EST

Jumping the shark. That's all i've gotta say. Technically "American Idol" jumped the shark a long time ago, but still.

Kitty Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:36 AM EST

I think it's a way to get Paula out gracefully, but I would miss the antics and bantering between Paula and Simon. That's why I watch the show!

Grace Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:18 AM EST

WHY do we need another judge??!!
Let the singers....SING!!
Hey....novel idea huh???
WE know how to pick the winner.
We don't need the judges to try to
influence us any more than they already do.
I DO love SIMON though.

Connor Kendall Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 02:15 AM EST

She's just a pretty face. There are songwriter/performers with more success & experience who could do a better job. And increasing the 90 second singtime is a valid point. Connor

lillian Hinds Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 01:51 AM EST

I think it would be an advantage to have such an expert on American Idol. Fair judgement of vocals is primary exclusive of the song. In some cases the singers have limited choices of song. Four is too many. It will take away from the time frame needed by the contestants to really show their talents. Three judges, more experience with vocal quality is needed.
Lill

Louise M. Gibson Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 01:09 AM EST

No Judges..... Just let the contestants sing and perhaps interact with the Guest Artist. Let the group sing a song each week. There are a lot of things you could do to make it more entertaining. If we are to vote for these talented young people give us the opportunity to know them better each week.

barbara Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 12:45 AM EST

please don't add anything to the show.don't need another judge.keep things the way they are.

yellehs2 Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 12:26 AM EST

Why bother? We already know the producers don't pay any attention to what the fans think, it was pretty obvious this season when we all complained endlessly about the arm waving...and did it stop? No.

Dana Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 12:04 AM EST

I'd rather see the new judge REPLACE Randy. His analogies are tired and overused, and he only uses Idol to springboard his other projects.

pinkpanda Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST

I dont really think that american idol needs another judge + i luv paula

alowe Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

why is it that whenever they add a new host to a show, everyone always gets worked up about it? just look at the NUMBER of stories about this on idol.maxlowe.net. it's insane!

what's paula's problem anyway?

JKT Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:40 PM EST

Here they go, f ing up a good thing.
We don't need another look like Paula, we have Paula. We need full length songs from the contestants not more judge flap. Whose brilliant(not)
idea is this. Honestly, 3 is enough.

Rochester Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:37 PM EST

I will no longer be watching Idol....the contestants do not have enough time as it is.......the focus should be on the music....bad mistake!

Stephanie T. Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:39 PM EST

Who?? Fourth judge picks that make PERFECT sense:

Susannah Hoff
Chrissie Hynde
Amy Mann (even if she's trying to be Chrissie Hynde)
Annie Lennox
Pat Bennetar
Siouxie Sioux

Rosaletta Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

SIMPLY PUT, BAD MOVE!

Jeff Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

Lord have Mercy! Do we really need another judge? The producers are really grabbing at straws to try and bring back the ratings. DON'T FIX WHAT AINT BROKE MAN! I really like things the way they are. THIS SUCKS!

Andi Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

I have always been a big fan of the Paula, Randy, Simon trio, but it does seem so often I long for Paul to make just one full complete sentence. I understand loyalty to the end but know why is she 100% she really is on something if nothing more than too many perception meds. I love her and hurt for her. Another judge may help take so much pressure off of Paula as being the "Good" one. It kill her to have to tell a contestant they weren't so good.

Chris Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:00 PM EST

Disapointing news from the American Idol camp. Oh well, they'll soon find out as ratings continue to drop.

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:57 PM EST

I'm very unhappy about the decision to add another judge to the show. Paula, Randy and Simon do just fine on there own. THIS WAS A REALLY STUPID IDEA!!! I probably won't watch this season.

Daniel Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

As long as Kara takes away talking time from Randy and Paula (especially Randy) and Simon can keep all of his, I'm all for another judge. Hopefully her opinions will be a bit more inspired than those of Randy/Paula.

Margo Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

Why can't she just replace Paula? I guess Paula signed a contract, but they still wanted an intelligent female voice.

Lorrie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 08:06 PM EST

I don't think AI needs another judge. What about ties. The contestants need more singing time. The judges bickering at each other takes up too much time. I LOVE SIMON, he tells it like it is. Paula is such a softie. And Randy, well he's just Randy. But honestly what do they really need a fourth judge for. LETS GIVE THE CONTESTANTS MORE TIME......

Judy Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

"Yo Dawg!" Why would she have to replace Paula (if that's the theory)? Why not Randy who has just become an embarassing joke. He hasn't said anything original in at least 3 years.

Ronnie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 07:38 PM EST

Season 7 proved that it's the producers that write what the judges say so i guess they will be busier in season 8 with four judges. It took 7 seasons for me to find my american idol...david archuleta. I don't feel the show treated him or his family fairly. The judges comments were stupid most of the time too. I really don't think I can watch next season.

Lola Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

Wow. I like the idea of a new judge. But This Is sorta..... over the top. You no????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I love reading this site's story's on AI. I LUVED the 1 on Ryan's shark attack. Bye!

Lola Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

Wow. I like the idea of a new judge. But This Is sorta..... over the top. You no????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I love reading this site's story's on AI. I LUVED the 1 on Ryan's shark attack. Bye!

Greg S. Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

Good. Hopefully the show will get more interesting.

Jenna Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

Thank goodness! Idol needs a female judge who isn't always on the brink of tears. I hope she can bring a new dimension to the show that Paula Abdul just can't.

Angela Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

Hopefully she gets that half-wit psycho otherwise known as Paula Abdul off of the show soon!

Suzanne Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

Thank the goddess; it's about time they got some new blood. Now, Paula will
'collapse from exhaustion' or something like that, and be quietly booked into rehab and fade from the show, right?

Erich Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

I think the American Idol producers just "jumped the shark"!

Sara Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

I think this will be a huge breath of fresh air for American Idol. I once was a Paula Abdul fan (I beleive I own a shirt from one of her concerts) but I think she's a little worn out. It'd be nice to have a female who actually has a mind of her own. I'm excited to see what she has to offer American Idol.

Joyce Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

I love Paula and Randy. Randy is a great judge. At least, he is fair. I don't believe we need another judge.

Kate Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 06:04 PM EST

They should let go of Randy... Because he has his own show its "America's Best Dance Crew" on mtv making its 3rd season!!And he needs to be on that more than Idol cause he is hardly there and he owns it!!!!! So why pull out Paula or Simon while the could do Randy????

Joyce Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

I love Paula, and Randy is to me a great judge. He was the one who founded Mariah Carey, remember? I also like Simon. I believe a new judge will only make the show much less entertaining. I agree with some of the other comments, we certainly need to hear more talent (singing).

april Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:59 PM EST

I agree! More time for contestants and less judges. Its a good mix now and whatever we say, they will do what they want anyways. I say bye to Randy.

don Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

IDOL definitely needs more time for the singers to sing! Listening to Seacrest banter with Simon and answering stupid e-mails is turning off many viewers. Let the contestants sing!

john neidhardt Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

THE ENTIRE SHOW IS FARCE! A JOKE!
SINCE WHEN "DO WE HAVE TO MANUFACTURE" OUR TALENT? WHY DO WE DO THIS EVERY YEAR?

storm Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

To AJ - could not agree with you more. It is so apparent to me tha AI is fixed after the producers fixed the results this year beginning with the top 3 show. Please! The producers choice for Archuleta of "Longer"... Need I say more...

1, 2, 10 judges - it does not matter if they cannot find another talent like Archuleta and / or Carly Smithson.

John Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

This was my last year watching idol! You knew it was in trouble when they kept saying that "This season is the best ever" Anytime a show needs to tell people that, you know it sucks and the ratings are dropping. IMHO they have scrapped all the good talent they can find and now its down hill every season.
Also who's bright idea was it to have like a dozen episodes of just searching for talent across the USA? After watching that we lost all our interest and once the real show started it started to get old very fast.
I still like Simon, Randy, and even Paula but this show is out of Gas...

J.Me Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

Trivia:
Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi should already be familiar with each other, as they have already co-written together a few years back. Before IDOL came a calling, Paula was looking to relaunch her music career and co-wrote a song, "Spinning Around" with Kara. Well Paula's comeback was put off, and "Spinning Around" was passed on to Kylie Minogue who relaunched her music career in the UK, with great success.

Suzanne Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

American Idol needs to have a new female judge along with Randy and Simon. Each year it seem as tho' Paula either says the same statements to each contestant, acts as tho' she is in a world of her own, is in total disagreement with the men. I feel like Randy and Simon sometime try ignore her but, I don' actually see how they put up with her ------ actions. Judges are to be just that - judging a contestant and not arguing amongst themselves as she does quite well!!! It will be a pleasure to have someone with better knowledge and hopefully experience in knowing what it mean to be a "JUDGE". As a veiwer of American Idol I welcome the new judge and say goodbye to Paula!!!!!!

D. Ruben Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I'm not at all surprised...I've never ben a fan of Simon's much less either of the other two. So many times I've felt whereas these oyung people are trying in front of a National audience to show their wares. Paula, who so many times has attempted to show a positive outlook on these young people so do I believe Simon is slowly trying to move Paula out....you bet!

Jalil Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

This show needs more explosions, like every other Fox show

fredric Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

like most things, i'll reserve judgment for later, once i see what this newbie brings to the table.

Holmark Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Who really cares? We just DVR the whole show and get through it in about 30 minutes anyway--the judges' comments aren't even necessary, but it is just part of the game! Simon is really the only one with credibility.

Becky Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

Each judge gets 20 seconds, no more no less, on the clock the minute the first one starts speaking. WE NEED TO HEAR MORE SINGING. Period. End of fix.

Lea Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

I fast forwarded through a good portion of the judges comments this year, so a 4th judge seems like a terrible idea. More time for nonsense and less time for the contestants.

But I've taken the show off my tivo after 7 years, so have at it, show.

Carol Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

We don't need another judge! Just give the singers more singing time and stop those stupid questions and answers from calls/emails. If any judge should go, it should be "Yo, dog, What's up dog?" Randy. Sorry, but it gets really old. Please no "guest judges"! They take up too much time and end up making the same comments anyway.

Jennifer Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

I'm completely for phasing Paula out. Her comments are very entertaining but I'd like give someone else a chance (who is hopefully more coherent).

Let's Celebrate Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

The comments you guys have written have been honest and profound. I am going to sum up all previous comments for the sake of keeping it simple: dump Randy, dump Paula, forget about Kara Dioguardi, dump Simon, don't watch the show, don't watch any show. wow. This doesn't leave much room for fun, does it? How about sticking to what makes you feel good no matter what others think?? Now, that's an idea!

Raven_Moon Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

I suppose if she is a good judge it will be all right. I only really care about what Simon thinks, even if I don't always agree with him. Mostly though, I am concerned about taking away time from the performances. Instead of a 4th judge, how about some songs from this millennium?

jason Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

i don't see anything wrong with trying new things after 8 seasons, why not? SUPPOSEDLY, season 9 is it anyway, at least for simon, it is. besides the contestants simon is the only other reason to watch. they can switch whatever they want as long as they TRY to bring us the talent. the only thing i don't want back are those annoying question and answer sessions on the results show. oh yeah, and those damn group numbers. anyway, can't wait for each david's cd this fall.

supermart Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

DioGuardi to Ryan on radio this morning: "It's hard for me to not be honest," she said. "I'm known to be very exclamatory... My vibe is to the point, and I can be pretty tough at times, but also nurturing when I need to be." ....... I guess PAUNDY is in trouble. BTW: What will they do if the voting is a TIE? Flipping a coin into the air ala Two-Face ???

Joe Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

I Hate it!! Leave Paula alone. She's good for the show. They have great chemistry. A fourth judge will waste to much time. They need more singing time and more guess judges, big name judges. Better singing talent will bring bigger ratings. The singers have got to have a personality to make the show more interesting.

Diane Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

Yes get rid of paula. she is either drunk or on pills, she says the same thing over and over again to each contestant. Randy is ok and Simon tells the truth.

Karen Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

It may work out but not if a 4th judge takes too much time away from the singers. I like Paula, but not as a judge, she doesn't make sense most of the time???

Jim Thomas Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

Perhaps her vocab will be more than seven words, and there will be some... well you know what I'm say'n DOG.

wh Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

Maybe she's there to replace Randy. Why do we assume Paula's out? When was the last time Randy created tons of free publicity? Or had the whole country talking about what he said? Or influenced what you thought? And if she's not there to replace someone, Vishnu help us. All we need is another stupid, producer-influenced opinion to FF through.

Muziguru Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

Great idea for another judge. Why replace Paula, who at least adds some empathy to the advice. Randy is the one who needs to be replaced.

Bill Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

She'll be a great new addition. Paula is weak in her role so maybe Kara can add some life. Who knows, maybe she'll be mean too!

The "L" Word Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

Thank goodness that Angie Martinez didn't become a judge! Like Paula, she has no talent as a singer and with her they would probably have renamed the show "Ghetto Idol"

Brian Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

Considering I think Paula is a "superfluous time-waster", I think this can improve things.

Jacob Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

I don't think that having a fourth judge could work! I rather have a floating guest star judge like IDOL had back in the early days like Gloria Estefan, Diane Warren, Clive Davis, & LL Cool J. If Paula leaves, I will leave too!!

Sarah Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

How are they going to determine if a contestant "goes on to Hollywood" if there are FOUR judges? It works well with three, because at least two of the judges will agree. Stupidest idea I've heard regarding this show, second only to keeping Paula around so long.

T.W. Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

Despite some of her missteps, we love Paula in that judge's seat; she balances out Simon's too-harsh criticisms. Besides she supported David Cook throughout Season 7 and Simon hated him at first, so who's the better judge of what American wants in an AMERICAN Idol? If they think Paula should go, then they should just cut her, not "phase" her out. However, I can't imagine that table without Paula and I think adding another judge is a huge mistake...America wants more of the contestants and less of the judges!

mil Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

"Paula is a contestant sympathizer, and some people just don't like that, as it doesn't provide the entertainment they need. Last season I carefully observed the judges comments and Paula was using the richest language by a wide margin"
I totally agree with you on this,
and I think it's a mistake to add another judge when they already have three good judges!

Rodney Grote Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

I LOVE PAULA! Paula leaves the show, the show drops ratings HUGE. For the new judge, not very exciting but I guess we will see where it goes! :D

Sheila C Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

First thing of thought of when I heard "fourth judge" was "Great! Now we have to listen to even more judges talking instead of contestants singing." All the same, I think she'll be better than Paula and hopefully will make more sense, too.

Mik Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

I might actually watch Idol if Paula were replaced with someone who helps make their auditions more like real auditions. More honest/blunt critiques is a good thing... I hate it when Paula tries to make people feel better or inspire them, that's not what auditions are for. I want to see the auditioners get slammed for crappiness, not praised.

kathy Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

Bye Paula.

Holgarth Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Just another US show following the successes from Europe. There has been Euro singing competition on TV for many years before the American version. Same for several of the reality shows, cooking shows, comedy sketches. So many American shows are clones from British and other European shows it is ridiculous.

Mike Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

I listened to some of her stuff, it really stinks. She couldn't articulate her words well and her tone was so off key. If she thinks she can judge others when she herself is so tone deaf is a great big mystery to me. I'm sorry but I'm not going to kiss idol's butt just to say something good here. I think it is the wrong move.

edward ewing staton Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

The judges and host all act like they just received their Certificate of Atendance from the nearby Actors Studio...the lady on the show is either going to gush, cry or swoon, while the one on her left is ready to break like peanut brittle, and the one on her right talks like how's it over there, man.........and the host is a cardboard character who will patronize the audience by going after the judge on Paul's left, at least, once during a show...If the TV audience could vote for the afore mentioned where one of them left the show in favor of a replacement, it would help, I think...

Brad Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

I think this is a great move on "Idol"'s part. It really needs from fresh blood in there to stir things up. I'm so tired of hearing the same things from Randy, Paula and Simon over and over again. It will be great to get a fresh perspective.

steve Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

They need articulate judges, not ones who make trite responses--so I say get rid of Randy. More performance time for singers, less time for useless critiques. They should have REAL vocal coaches commenting, too--maybe we in the audience will learn something more about singing.

jiminca Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

I think anything that lessens the time singers have to perform is a mistake. There should only be 3 judges. I would not mind if they ousted Paula for someone with better critiques, but adding another judge by itself is not a positive development.

LiLa Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

I'd like to see Randy leave with DioGuardi to provide honest, thoughtful advice to the contestants. That leaves Paula to sooth their nerves and hurt feelings while Simon remains his usual, acerbic self. Perfect!

javier Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

I met Kara at a songwriter's conference. She's a BRILLIANT songwriter and very smart too. I think she'll be a great judge and great resource for the aspiring artists on Idol.

julie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

i wouldn't mind if they would get rid of Paula. Randy's pretty lame too. Neither one of those two are any good.

lunchcrowd Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

I think this is a move to eventually rid of Paula, and/or Randy. Dawg-gone-it.

Janice Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Paula has gotten boring and should be replaced. Randy is still okay, and Simon MUST stay !!

Indiana Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

I really don't care who's judging. As long as guys like William Hung keep competing in American Idol, I'll still watch.

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

More eye candy. Really? All this when to paraphrase Simon: "This is a singing contest"

Tom Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

I have often referred to American idol as American idolatry. Looking at the comments I can see that many are so enthralled with the gossip and blatant pandering to a singing contest. Mostly I pray that the contestants will not be destroyed by the 'Hollywood' secular progressive agenda.

May God Bless and Keep us in the His Loving Arms

SG Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

ANYTHING TO EVENTUALLY GET RID OF PAULA!

Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

the show sucks- the judges suck-the commercals suck

Thomcarl Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

Who cares, she show sucks.

A.M. Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

Given Kara's credentials, this looks like a good move. Plus, she might be able to deflect some attention away from Loopy Abdul in all her weird glory and increase the judging panel's sense-to-nonsense ratio. As long as she stays away from terms like "dawg" and "star power", that is.

Chris M Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Sorry, Paula fans. You know how in corporate mergers both CEOs stand up announce that th old one and the new one are both going to work together? Then a month after the merger the old one leaves to "pursue other opportunities"? Same thing here -- just that AI production can't make this look like Paula was fired. There's no way, given the current format, that they can add another 3-4 minutes of programming per ep. They're already rushing judge's comments now, and most episodes are running over 30-60 seconds (check your DVRs!). Expect to see a mix of Paula and Kara during the audtion rounds, with a Chris Daughtry/David Cook soundtrack's for Paula's emotional 'sendoff' during Season 7.

Michael Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Let the audience be the judge. There's really no need for anyone else.

BBC Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

I sure hope that they are not going to get rid of Paula she is so refreshing and kind something that those kids need before are after Simon cuts them down.. I love you Paula,You are so fine.....

Big Mama Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

Remember all those shows where there was a guest judge on the panel either during the show or the auditions on the road? The dude from Earth Wind and Fire was wild. I had no problem with the 4th judge and most importantly the show rolled along smoothly. Paula and Randy got lazy the last two seasons, especially. When their comments do nothing to impact the result why would they put any effort into it? If this lady shows them up, maybe they will raise their game (hopefully). Change is okay. Breathe. Breathe.

ElCritico Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

Idol is one of the few TV shows I watch. Simon has earned his creds and belongs as a judge. Randy as well. I'd rather see Paula replaced by Kara - the sooner the better. The show "BRITAIN HAS TALENT" of which Simon is a judge is much more entertaining than American Idol.

Yan Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

I prefer that the singer have more time to perform than listening to the useless comments of the judges. In the end, it boils down to what America voted.

dan Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Add Delta Goodrem to Kara's list of pop stars she's written songs for...

Sally in Chicago Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

They used to have 4 judges, but they were rotating guest judges. Frankly I enjoyed seeing Smokey, Gladys, Ashford & Simpson and some others as judges...and for star power they should have a "star" as a judge, not another "nobody" knows. I'd like to see Gladys judge or Donny Osmond or somebody who actually knows what it takes to be a star, not taking anything away from Randy or Paula...but what they need is a veteran performer.

Fletch Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

Actually, ann, if you want to be accurate, the guy would be kickstarting his motorcycle...

Max Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

Didn't they try this before during 2nd or 3rd season? I remember during audition a female judge was suppose be the 4th judge & decided to quit & didn't bother showing her on tv.

ann Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

Michael Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Yes, judging a karaoke contest can be very demanding -- I'm not sure that even 4 people can handle it.

WTF Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Frankly, I couldn't care less. I became interested in Idol by channel-surfing onto a Daughtry performance, and stopped watching with Sanjiyah's mohawk. The contestents went from having talent to being an incredible waste of my time. I certainly would have been more intersted if there was a greater diversity of genre, as well as the ability to sing complete songs, at least twice the current time alloted. The useless inputs of the judges and the "death by commercial" mentality has cost them a significant portion of their fan base, to be sure.

Chris Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

Four judges is too many -- they should cut Randy before the new season starts.

Marc Shelton Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

Idol doesn't need another judging face. Idols need more sining time. We don't really need to hear what the judges say any way, because it is the public who chooses the winner. Here's a surprise, I say ditch Randy.

Dee Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

I meant the contestants should have longer singing time. Definately.

Dee Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

I don't want to see this 4th judge on the show. What needs revamping is all the nonsense that goes on. Ryan and Simon talking, Paula's long unnecessary comments. Commercial after commercial. More singing time of the contestants. Somehow after this season I feel the voting is totally rigged. Syesha should have gone before Jason. He has such a huge fan base and his line was busy busy busy but he got the lowest votes - supposedly. Like him or not something just wasn't right. Especially with Paula-gate.

Kariann Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

"I'd say Paula has less to worry about than Randy." Amen, Heather. Randy must be replaced! I look forward to a judge that is fair. I hope Kara is honest. Her background looks good!

Joe Irony Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

Yes, can we refrain from the homophobic comments. It's so gay...

ZF Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

Great idea: erase the memory of David Cook's fine cave-aged gruyere by bringing on a judge who specializes in Velveeta.

Dee Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

This isn't the change AI needs - the show is about the contestants NOT the judges, so now that eats up more time with their blathering comments. Simon is good fun, but it sounds like someone wimped out on making the necessary cuts (Randy & Paula) to freshen up the judges table with two new voices instead of adding a 4th.

Mike Schlags Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

If it isn't broken, then why fix it? Why make any changes at all? How could the producers of American Idol even think of changing what literally millions of people obviously enjoy... I'm sure the additional person will add something to the show but to think that Paula would be leaving... If that happens then it's the last time I watch the show. America loves Paula.

MplsBrad Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

Mindy, do you ever do anything that does NOT involve looking at your stupid TV set?

Cindi Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

Clay Aiken is an American Idol loser. His name shouldn't even be mentioned. He exposed himself on the internet to another gay man and put his foot in a woman's face on an airline and the FBI had to be called and we all remember that Kelly Ripa incident where he put his filty hand over her mouth. He is a loser and should not be mentioned with winners.

See, Paula, even your written comments have issues: "Straight up now, tell me are going to kick me off the show?" Do you see what is wrong with that sentence? Sort of left out the "you" didn't you?...a sign? hmmmm.

Terri Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

Tough call. Two women will add balance to the show, so go for it if it will add some serious "expertise" to the mix. BUT, leave Paula alone. The woman has serious health issues from an accident, and maybe just needs to adjust her meds before showtime! If they want to get serious about change, cut out some of those ridiculous auditions. Nobody wearing a lampshade should get through the first door!

J Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

Alternate Paula with MC Skat Kat?

Paula Abdul Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

Straight up now, tell me are going to kick me off the show? Oh, oh, oh. Or are you just having fun?

Peggy Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

One more comment - if you were an Archuletta fan, I can see why you think the show was rigged. However, so many of us liked him but felt he sounded the same week after week, was not mature enough to change up the arrangements, and that David Cook was far more creative, interesting, versitile and mature. If the show was rigged, David Archuletta would have won it - as the judges called him the winner from the beginning.

Nancy Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

I've watched Idol from the very beginning. Change is difficult for a lot of people. It's like going to your favorite resturant and all of a sudden they've changed the menu. I'm not saying change isn't good, but it might take some adjustment, but what the heck, give her a try and if she doesn't work out we still have the same judges we've always had.

Peggy Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

My first thought is to keep things the way they are. I have watched American Idol Rewind and I didn't like hearing the mentor's comments at the judging table, adding a 4th judge. We have to see the new judge to find out if it works. If she says something other than "I didn't love it but I'm not mad at you either" or "you look lovely tonight" she could be a great addition.

Nancy Coggin Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

My husband and I love watching Idol but we feel like more singing and less wordy judgment is desirable from most everyone. What we "hear" in the voice and performance of a contestant determines whether we will vote for the contestant or not; not what the judges say ... even though the judges are qualified in their field and give honest opinions, I feel they don't give the American public credit for liking what they "like" ... and for having the good judgment to vote for what the feel is true entertainment. I have a great deal of respect for each judge now on the panel and feel like an addition will be okay; but not necessary. Replacing Paula would be a mistake. She has a lot of "mature" people who remember her singing, and admire her for her human side to approaching contestants. Thank you all for American Idol inout.

AJ Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

I am not really concerned about a new judge joining the show. I am concerned that Idol is fixed and the judges and producers tweat the show so they let their favorite win like this season. (Ex: Nigel's happy dance and Simon on the Ellen show, need I say more) After they threw Archuleta under the bus I am not watching this show any more. Therefore I don't really care if they get another judge or not. Actually, I say get rid of Simon.

Rick Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

I disagree with Mindy completely, some shake up is needed since Randy and Paula are useless lumps the last couple of seasons. I'd like to see Seacrest replaced with someone that will not play with Simon so much. There's lots of time for a 4th comment if they would get rid of the stupid pre-song videos, pointless "mentors", group "up with people" songs and Ford commercials.

Amy Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

Also I find listening to Paula's comments absolutely painful. When I occasionally save a show to hear the songs again, I can't stand to listen to her comments a second time. I can barely stand to listen to them one time. I don't recall her being that bad at the beginning of the show - maybe a little long-winded and annoying but not as bad.

larry Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

As soon as I started reading this story, the bottom line is bye, bye Paula. But that could be a loss as part of the show's mystique is the weird clohtes Paula sometimes wore never mind the nonsense she spoke.

Ahmed Ghoneim Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

I think it's not a bad thing, but I agree that they're really gonna have to watch the time. Paula Abdul has become part of the formula and her leaving the show could harm the ratings, because she must have fans although I personally don't like her but wouldn't feel it was the same without her. The problem here is that if the producers want to play on the fans' nostalgia they should emphasize zero change other than the fourth judge. On the other hand, I think the fourth judge has a lot of experience and will be a great addition to the show, however this will depend on her personality as well. If she's like SYTYCD's Mia Michaels (in judging), people might not like her so much.

Mindy Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:36 PM EST

I don't like this one bit. The reason I watch American Idol instead of the 20+ other reality singing shows out there is because of the dysfunctional family dynamic among Simon, Paula and Randy. If this woman detracts from that, or if (heaven forbid) the producers try to replace Paula with this woman, I'll stop watching. Simple as that. I'll watch NCIS instead. Heck, I'd rather go back to watching Grey's Anatomy that watch American Idol without the original trio. It was already the general consensus that guest judges sucked; why on earth would they consider bringing in a new judge permanently? American Idol's still the highest-rated show on television. I can't imagine why they would feel the need to screw with something that works already. If this is a harbinger of things to come, I'm very afraid for the show's future, indeed.

Amy Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

I'm willing to see a judge with a potentially intelligent viewpoint but not if it cuts into the singer's time. I'm tired of seeing the song cut up so it will fit on Idol. And I'm not planning to watch the idiots who can't sing and try to audition just to get on TV this year.

Don Jariyasunant Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

Adding a 4th judge isn't going to help. Randy and Paula are still horrible judges and need to go if Idol is still going to be a ratings juggernaut. Idol needs to re-adapt it's formula to more of what So you think you can Dance does and actually give the judges more say in who stays and goes. I don't need to hear..."You dawg that was a'ight" or "Dawg that was pitchy."

Justin Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

Apparently changes need to be made. Maybe this will help. American Idol has been going downhill lately. I'm still going to support David Archuleta in everything he does!!! He is so talented and deserves so much! I'm hoping this change will help the show. If not, it may end sooner than expected!

JR Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

They could just jump over the shark all the way and put together an all-star panel of judges...I'm thinking Paula Abdul, Burno Tonioli, Mary Murphy and...I don't know...Falvor Flav?

real_vermonter Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

It is a "fix" but AI is just not fixing the real problem, which last season was the "fixed" comments of the judges, what with all the pre-judging going on....If this judge waits to hear the singers and provides her OWN thoughts on them, then it is at least an improvement.

4 judges? I just see 3 of them. Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

The show works fine with 3 judges. Until now, we had 2: Simon = 1, Paundy = 1. So, from now on we have 1 more judge. Good.

kaf Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

Maybe b/c she's a songwriter and presumably has a decent mastery of the English language, she'll actually be able to form coherent statements. In all seriousness, we need some new opinions on Idol. Hopefully she'll be a great addition!

The Heater Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

Also meant to say that we don't have the "Coca-Cola" sitting down moment; our "Ryan" doesn't spend 12 minutes a show arguing with our "Simon"; so there's actually time for singing and comments... What a novel concept. Just go on YouTube and type in Canadian Idol and you'll see...

jo Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

The show doesn't need a 4th judge. It works the best with 3. I think they just jumped the shark big time.

The Heater Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

Here in the land of frozen hockey pucks and frigid cold fronts, we have had, for the six seasons of Canadian Idol, four judges (three men and one woman). The real problem with AI, in my opinion, is that, apart from Simon who can be harsh sometimes, nobody else makes any actual comments on the actual (or fictional) performance. Randy goes "What's up Dawg", and then CindyLoopieLoo starts talking on how lovely the singer looks and that "America really gets you"... At least in Canada, we get constructive, intelligent judges' reaction and comments.

Jamie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Its interesting. I watched an episode of "American Idol Rewind" (I was really bored) last week from season 2. I was amazed that all 3 judges actually were able to put together sentences that made sense and seemed helpful. I think maybe they've all just become too familiar with each other. A shake up might help. I actually find Randy less coherent than Paula the last couple of years, of the two I'd rather see him go.

Redeye Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

I think that 4 judges is too much. The singers do not have enough time as it is--too rushed and cut off at the end of the show. How will the judges do the tie breaker? If it is 2 and 2 --no odd vote to break the tie when deciding the final contestants. I understand that they want to shake things up a bit, but I don't think adding a judge will help. It will take that much more time to listen to an extra set of comments!! NEED MORE TIME FOR THE SINGERS TO PERFORM!!!

Step by Step Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

Step 1 - bring in younger, prettier, more coherent and capable judge

Step 2 - endear her to idol faithful by not ousting incoherent idol judge immediately

Step 3 - after endeeared to idol faithful, oust incoherent judge

GOB Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST

Here's an addition I'd like to see... a GONG. Seriously. Some of the performances are so awful, I wish they'd save the audience some misery and yank the "hopefuls" off stage before their final pitchy (hate that word) warble. Here's hoping they actually get a top 10 that can carry a tune this year.

DAL Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Forget the judges and limit the amount of calls (1) single phone line can vote. It's not about talent it's whats popular to the little cell phone junkies.

Stop watching and let this karaoke lameness die a merciful death.

Heather Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

Julia I LOVE your comment. Yes! The judges *should* be having to compete to stay on. They are getting stale when you can predict not only that Randy will say "dawg" but how many times per contestant, let alone that no matter what, Paula will at least say they look good.

SH Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

Tee-hee-hee. Paula's "concerned" about the new judge. I (almost) wish her reality show was still taping, so we could see her mental breakdown concerning this news. I think that it will definitely be beneficial addition if she actually gives some decent criticism (unlike our resident mental patient). As for the show cutting into precious performance time...simple solution. Can Paula and Randy. Find one more judge with something intelligent to say and voila. People who know what they are talking about are concise, which takes up much less time than babbling about "dawg pounds" and "soul connections".

Jamie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

The comments aren't supposed to help us (the viewers) but help the singers get better. Seems to me "You were sharp during the first part of the song" is more helpful than "pitchy". Its come to the point that just playing random phrases of previous seasons would be as useful as what they say now, they had much larger vocabularies the first couple of seasons.

Lauren Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

Plus, if they wanted a well-known song writer, with a successful performing history, why not get Linda Perry? Now she would be a great add to the show!

Lauren Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

4 feels like too many. At this point we'll be listening to the judges longer than we are listening to performances.

Owen Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

And letting a contestant sing their own material is way to complex. We need to be able to judge the singer, not the song. It would be impossible to differentiate the two in one and a half to two minutes.

Tim Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

Remember...this is not the first time Idol has hired a 4th judge. Several years ago (season 2, I'm thinking?), they hired Angie Martinez, who then quit during the audition process (and was edited out) because she couldn't stand shattering people's dreams. This is what led to the smattering of celebrity guest judges over the years, which they finally killed. I guess they're finally back to Plan A. I'm sure she'll be better than a return visit by Quentin Tarantino.

Linda Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

LONGER SHOW NOW I SUPPOSE WE WILL HAVE TO SIT THROUGH AN ADDITIONAL 30 MINUTES - I SAY TAKE PAULA OFF

Owen Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

How much can the judges say, really? Come on. It will always comes down to, basically, "You sang well" or "You sang badly". There is no "reason" to be given. Would we really like Randy to go beyond "pitchy" and say, "you went atonal on the phrasing of the first line of the bridge" or "you sang a minor ninth when it should have been a third"? Would most people be able to understand that? "You look pretty" is a stupid comment to a singer, but its appropriate to a TV show. The judges say just what they should. WE, the voters know what we like. And we'd have as much trouble explaining why as the judges do. So leave them alone, let them say what they will. It doesn't change a thing.

Chrisitna Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

The begining of the changes post Nigel? The judging dynamic has gotting stale over the years so this might be a good move. I remember her as a judge on the short lived "The One."

Jamie Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

They managed the year they tried guest judges every week, although it seemed rushed. I have no idea who she is, and I think a singer would be more useful, but if she can come up with comments that contain more than "Dawg dawg dawg dawg pitchy it was aright dawg pitchy dawg I dunno dawg dawg pitchy" or "You look really pretty" or "Cruise ship, kerioke, hideous, theme park, not bad", then I welcome her.

Amy Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

Is this an attempt at possibly phasing out one of the existing judges next year? If this new judge works out well, then next year new blood won't have to be brought in. Bye, bye Paula?

collins Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

i hope this is a beginning step in allowing-- perhaps even requiring-- idol contestants to sing/write their own original material. dioguardi is a song writer afterall, maybe someone will finally be able to critique something original, other than wardrobe...

Julia Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

Why shouldn't there be competition among the judges. They ask the performers to bring their best every week. Shouldn't this make the judges work a bit harder to be coherent, relevant? If anything the judging has gotten stale.
