All excited for 'Death Race,' say 'Aye!'

And for those of you too embarrassed to admit your love of cheesy-predictable-awesome Jason Statham movies, bear in mind this one also features three-time Oscar nominee Joan Allen. Which means Death Race can be classified as classy-cheesy-predictable-awesome. In other words, "AYE!"

Bonus for hard-core Statham fans (like me): Click here for Chris Nashawaty's must-read 2007 interview with the star of The Transporter, Crank, and the well-reviewed The Bank Job. Good stuff!

Stephanie, I'm glad SOMEBODY knew that this was a remake (what else is new in Hollywood???) of DEATH RACE 2000! I'm surprised it isn't titled DEATH RACE 3000.

This movie pays homage to the original Deathrace mostly in name. It can be compared to many movies like Running Man, The Condemmed or even the chariiot scene in Ben Hur.

But if you are a geek like me, it resembles an old table top game called Car Wars. Check it out.
Then you will see why some geeks are knowingly are paying for an obvious silly movie, but come on.
If you want serious. go see the newest powerpoint movie "I.O.U.S.A. "

At least Deathrace is destined to be a great drinking game.

I refuse on principle to watch this movie, even though the thought of turning down the chance to watch Ian McShane in anything seems ludicrous.
That trailer has to be one of the most ill-conceived ever. I will not subject myself to this trash. I’d rather watch Bank Job and the Transporter on repeat to get my Jason Statham fix.

I can honestly say I have no desire to see this movie. What was Joan Allen thinking?

AYE!!!! Love Jason Statham and I'm not the least bit embarrased to admit it. Can't wait for Deathrace - Joan Allen AND Ian McShane - This movie is gonna be awesome. I'm also hoping the stories(rumors) I've heard of 'Crank 2' are true.

To anon:
If anything, Death Race feels more inspired by the videogame series Twisted Metal with a dash of the all too quickly canceled Drive on Fox. However, the whole premise of a death game has been done repeatedly, with or without King's The Running Man. It started with the novella The Most Dangerous Game and its best predecessor is the Japanese novel Battle Royale (the awful WWE film The Condemned is similar, though it shamelessly rips off Royale). Even the Saw franchise uses elements of the death game concept (though it was much more creative and pronounced with the original). I'highly doubt Death Race is trying to mimic The Running Man.
With that said, although I like Jason Statham, I'll probably wait for DVD to watch this movie.

Yeah no matter how cheesy I'll be there. Come on...that voice, that bod. Combine that with a movie with cars racing and stuff getting blown the **** up. This girl is in love. What can I say, I'm a sucker for the predictable action plot with a sexy lead.

I figured that Tarentino would eventually do a remake of 1975's Death Race 2000. Stephen Kings Running Man was a just a good copy of both DR2000 and the original Rollerball

Jason Statham could do a remake of "golden girls" and I'd probably go see it. Statham won a permanent nutguard with me with those Guy Ritchie movies he did.

Oh Jason Statham...how many sucktastic movies will you force me to watch just to see you?? Clearly at least one more.

P.S. Is Joan Allen really this hard up?

FM Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

Statham is great when he's playing the burly bruiser regular guy (see anything he's done with Guy Rithchie). Unfortunatly, I have never enjoyed him in anything where he plays the 'Action Hero'.

It's unfortunate that he has gotten so much more recognition for those movies then his more performance centered stuff.

Does anyone else think this movie is a sad rip off of Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Richard Dawson?

Heather Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

All they had to say in the movie trailer was "Jason Statham" and "former NASCAR driver" and there was no way in hell I was going to miss it. No. Way. In. Hell.

Why do the gay male blog writers have to write they're "hardcore fans" of UBER-hot B movie actors instead of just drooling over them unembarrasingly as their straight female counterparts do?

Gabriela Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

Yes, the Bank Job is out on DVD!

And I will definitely see this movie.

For all you Statham fans, you should check out Revolver...

Does anyone know if Bank Job is out on DVD?

Michelle Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

I am a HUGE Statham fan, whatever he's in I'm watching! From the moment I watched him in the Transporter I was hooked. Of course it may have something to do with his cockney charm (I'm a sucker for British men)or just his ability to put himself into character that sends me reeling. Either way I'm taking myself to see Death Race and will enjoy it without hesitation!!!

Tate Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

I liked Transporter. Transporter 2 - not so much. I'm not an overall fan of the action movies he does, but I've read many interviews with him, and he seems like a damn likeable guy. I hope his success continues.

Cristina Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

I will be first in line to see this. It looks AWESOME. It'll be one of those fun movies with absolutely no social redeeming values and you know what, I don't care. I go to the movies to forget and this movie promises to do just that. And with Jason Statham...I love him...I even saw In the Name of the King (two hours I will never get back) and was willing to overlook that fact that he was called Farmer.

Scott Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

I'm sad they didn't leave this as cheesy/campy as the original Death Race 2000. :(

If Jason Statham did more half naked spreads in magazines we would not have to watch cheesy movies.
