Daughtry courts first-time voters ... with Foreigner song

Aug 18, 2008, 05:32 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Music, News You Can Use, Politics as Entertainment

Daughtry has recorded a cover of Foreigner's "Feels Like the First Time," to be used as the theme song for CNN's League of First Time Voters initiative. (Of course, the song will also appear as a bonus track on Daughtry Deluxe, due out Sept. 9.) Check out the video below and then vote, on a scale of 1 to 10, how uncomfortable the lyrics make you. (Also, you know, vote.)

now I grew up listening to foreigner and I thought he wasnt bad.Foreigner was better but then again I wouldnt want chris to exactly like them.I thought he was good I love his voice!!

Todd Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

Is he singing or screaming at me. How about just using the original song, by Foreigner, which is about 10 times better than this crap. And, if CNN wanted to be "cool", how about finding a guy who does not sound like he is from the 1990's? This is why I hate American Idol....we get crap like this.

Isabella Eck Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

Sorry, I forgot to rate the cover. 10 out of 10. Oh Yeah!

Isabella Eck Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 10:36 PM EST

Chris rules! He did an awesome job on this song, and of course, I'll vote 100 times if I could. Chris forever!

Loretta Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 10:02 AM EST

It was fantastic. It is always fun to see and hear new artists bringing back the "greats". Daughtry has alot of originality. I love his voice!!!

JUST SAY NO TO DAUGHTRY Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 07:47 AM EST

What a do-o-o-o-o-o-o-osh!

Marty Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

I loved Foreigner. I do not think the Daugtry should take on covers of classic tunes from classic bands. It shows his total lack of originality.

JL Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

Looks like he's singing about the first time he was screwed by a polititian with the McCain/Obama clips. Sounds like all his songs as far as vocals.

BMA Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:17 PM EST

Like the version of the song (although not much different than the original). The whole concept, however, is exceedingly cheesy. C'mon Chris, you can't say you're past AI corniness, and then do this...

AlexG Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 10:16 PM EST

Great job, Chris! Great voice! I love this cover.

Sparko Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 01:29 AM EST

Well, not all the lyrics work as far as getting people to vote for the first time but why is that a big deal? Certainly it doesn't make me uncomfortable. Yeah, they could have changed some of the phrases to fit the cause, but really, if it gets people out there to vote for the first time, who cares? Lighten up. There are a lot of things in pop culture that are tons creepier than this-check out the majority of "reality" shows and get some perspective.

Carlos Camacho Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

You have to see one of his last performances and listen to this mans music quickly.... Just go to

He is still cute as a button. Want to lick his balls.

Sherry Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

I think DAUGHTRY does an AWESOME job with this song. Chris's voice just moves me & has since I first heard him. As far as it being used for the "First Time Voter" video, I think that someone connected with the voting process must have thought it fit or they wouldn't have used it.

The Dunster aka DJ Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

good cover, just strange that it's being used as as the theme song for CNN's League of First Time Voters initiative.....

Michelle Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 01:09 AM EST

Hmmm. I love Chris and his version of this song but not sure about it being the "theme" song for first time voters. I know the point of it all but don't think it's the best song for something like that.

karen Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 10:42 PM EST

Not sure it's creepy, but the words don't make any sense for what they're using the song for. I mean, is he suggesting he's getting in touch with McCain or Obama's feminine side? On the other hand, Chris Daughtry is great and he does a great job with the song.....

Tate Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

"Why is it necessary for everybody to always be so cynical and nasty?"

Because it's fun, basically. Half of the stuff that comes out of my mouth is just me joking around. If people didn't take it so seriously, they might get a laugh out of it. Which is really all I'm aiming for in my posts. It's life! Lighten up and take the piss once in awhile!

Azul Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

Everything I know about this group leads me to believe that Chris & band really thought they were doing something worthwhile here and I'm sure they were honored to be a part of something this big. They are good guys, whether people like their music or not. As far as the song? I think Chris does one of my favorite classics incredible justice and I could listen to it over & over again. As far as the purpose? Not so sure it's the right song choice for young voters, but if it works, who cares??

Dream Out Loud Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

"Feels like the First Time"?!?!?!? Really? As a get out the vote song? it's about as appropriate as if he had covered Like a Virgin.

Cheryl Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

Awesome! This is one of my all-time favorite songs now put to a good, contemporary use on a very important issue. I love the message -it does not matter if you are a Democrat or Republican -- or an Independent; the idea is that we each have a voice and need to be heard. It is not only the right but the responsibility of each and every citizen in a democracy to cast his or her vote. Rock on, Daughtry!!

Stuart Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 07:35 PM EST

There is nothing wrong with trying to get people involved.. so what if they are doing this for publicity.. its getting people to talk about politics and thats good for people to be getting involved this close to the election

sam Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

There is nothing wrong with encouraging people to vote and I believe that is what Chris and the band are doing. They really don't need to hype themselves with a cover song--in case you don't know, they sold a LOT of cd's and they are likely to sell a lot more this fall when the second CD is released. I love the song and I love Daughtry. Why is it necessary for everybody to always be so cynical and nasty?

Tate Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 04:56 PM EST

Patricia, he is where is he because he went on a show that is about nothing more than selling artists/songs/albums. What did you expect?

Patricia Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

It doesn't instill anything in me about voting. Just looks like another plug to sell the song and the album. I thought he was better than that. I still think he is an awesome artist and hope he concentrates on his music, not politics.

mixit Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

I'm so glad they aren't naming who they support. I can't stand when celebs push their political party/beliefs onto the general public. Love the song too.

OATMEAL WITH A SIDE OF BLAND Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

Why would he add one song and repackage an old album. Sounds like the lazy way out. He's ok, but I just don't feel that spark.

Jamie Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

I hate when people won't tell who their voting for...I know it isn't my business but I made a personal choice not to support Republican artists so that my money will not get into the hands of the RNC. Luckily they are few and fair between and usually suck anyway but I still want to know. C'mon Chris, give us a hint. Rock harder at the convention of your choice.

Winona Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

His cover is great - but as a "get out and vote" song? Nah.

L Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 07:56 AM EST

Great job! I'll be purchasing the deluxe addition.

JJ Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 09:57 PM EST

Chris' voice has improved so much. It's flawless. I am very impressed with this cover. The band seems like a fun group of guys.

Gena Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

Uhm....yeah...so that was sexy as all get out. I need to be paying more attention to Daughtry.

Staci Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 09:37 PM EST

Wow, that was amazing. This used to be a favorite song of mine and I think Daughtry made me fall in love with it all over again. I keep hearing so many good things about this band.
I am going to watch the video again. ROCK ON!

K Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

Obviously the last few posters have no clue what they are talking about. Daughtry is unbelievably nice to their fans. You must be the same losers who post on anything Daughtry related. LMAO
I think we they are doing is great. Nice to see such a successful band giving back, being good guys and being so great with fans. There aren't too many artists like that in the world.

hmd1987 Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

nay on all things Daughtry.
the guy's a tool; he never wasn't.

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

he sings like a goat. why does he do that?

WTF? Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 07:40 PM EST

The most I can say about him is he's good looking, but he's still an A $ $. He never would have thought to do this on his own. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Many published sources say he's not so nice to his fans in person. I buy that. Shame on EW for giving him a platform.

Biff Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

The singing is OK, but he's no Lou Gramm. And what the hell is the drummer doing? Just play the song, meathead!

MM Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

I LOVE Daughtry. They are one of my favorite bands. And I am an old fan of Foreigner. Sometimes when a new band does a classic cover, I just cringe. But I have to agree with Mick Jones, Chris did the song justice. He has one of the best voices I have ever heard. Glad to see Daughtry doing so well and using their fame in a good way.

Karen Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

LMAO at some of the bitter people on this site. Typical.
Daughtry is incredible on this song. Love Mick's comments too. This sure is a great and positive thing the band is doing. They are also the nicest guys you could ever meet. Keep up the good work, Daughtry. Love it!

B Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Who is this guy? He sucks.

Nathan Poitras Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

He'll certainly never have to worry about anybody covering his songs.

Nathan Poitras Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

Daughtry is, was, and will continue to be a doosh.

Joanie Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

Simon? Randy? Paula?

What do you think?

Tate Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

How funny is it that Foreigner is now loaded for expatriates from 80's metal - Jeff Pilson, Kelly Hansen, and Jason Bonham! I am a fan of all of their former bands as well as Foreigner, but I'm not sure I'm a fan of the combination. It's like covering a New York Strip with chocolate. Both great, but do they need to be together? Here's my vote for a Foreigner reunion.

Oh yeah, Daughtry's alright, too...

Tony Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

I think Daughtry did an awesome job on this cover of "Feels Like the First Time". It totally rocks!! I think Chris' voice is absolutely amazing. He more than did justice to this song.

Michele Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

This cover is AWESOME. Here is what Mick Jones (Foreigner Bassist)had to say about it:

"I'm a big fan of his. He's got a great voice, and I thought it would be a really good idea. So I just gave my blessing to the project, and they took it from there."

"It's a song that requires a really strong voice to carry it off, and he's got the range and the power to really do it convincingly," Jones said. "I don't think there are that many singers around at the moment that could really nail it. ... Out of all the singers of that style, he's the strongest. He's just a great singer all around. It doesn't matter what style it is, he could pretty much sing anything."

PS Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 07:56 AM EST

I agree that Daughtry should have "made it his own." It's too Karaoke. Simon would hate it. :) Their album is awesome, this song is just "okay."

SecretSauceTV Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 08:29 PM EST

Foreigner rocks - Daughtry does his best impression - but nothing beats the original - Foreigner puts on such a good live show - they're on tour now - check em out everybody!! they have soooo many classic tracks...

queen of disrepair Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 07:37 PM EST

I listened to Foreigner - I owned Foreigner albums - You, Mr. Daughtry are not Foreigner! I wish this cover hadn't been so damn carbon of the original. Love Daughtry's voice, but I don't get not trying anything new with it. I still give it a 7. Couldn't they have at least said something like "I guess it's just the Hillary in you that brings out the candidate in me" ?

feels a little creepy Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

This song is about voting? Really? Give it about a 7 on the creepy scale but Daughtry does rock this cover!

Agatha Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Hate Daughtry. But can you find a more awesome song!?!They rock in my book now.

thad Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

that song is so H-O-T-T!! On fiya! Great cover.
