Last Look: 'Buffy: The Animated Series'

Aug 4, 2008, 07:00 AM | by Marc Bernardin

Categories: Buffy, I'm Just a Geek, Sci-Fi, Television

There are plenty of things in the entertainment firmament I don't understand. Pauly Shore. Digimon. According to Jim. But for the life of me, I can't figure how anyone could have NOT handed Joss Whedon et al a coffin full of money and made this TV show a reality?

Just... look at it. The animation is smooth — clearly of the Bruce Timm/Batman: The Animated Series mold (and that's always a good thing) — the voicework is spot on (I believe that's Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, and Anthony Stewart Head reprising their roles; and whoever they got to fill in for SMG is a dead ringer), and it vibes exactly like Buffy's supposed to. It's sharp, funny, and full of action — and, mysteriously, it renders Sunnydale just like the live-action TV show... as if it's a movie studio backlot.

But still. I can't think of a cartoon I'd rather sit down to watch with my daughter. Or my son. Or all by myself. Why, cruel Hollywood gods, why!?

WHY WHY WHY!? I loved this show so much. I've been waiting for a movie, but a cartoon will DEFINTLY hold me over! BRING IT BACK.

Catherine Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Its about time they brought Buffy back! Can't wait to see it on TV! I know im exicted, really exicted.

mrfaces Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 08:34 PM EST

Gotta agree with "any Buffy is better then NO buffy". I also get the Kim Possible vibe. finally, I would vote for having this pick up the season 8 thread - please no more High School years. The whole point of s1-7 was watching the Scoobies evolve to a new place.

Dr. Zaius Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

I'm getting some wierd Kim Possible vibe from this and it's freaking me out just a little.

Nick Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

ANY Buffy is way better than anything else on TV. Even if its animated.

Eh, I'm not in love. It's not bad but I probably wouldn't watch it (and I say this prom the perspective of a devoted s1-3 fangirl.) Too many of the lines seemed forced, which is never a good sign. I'll happily stick with my s8 comics, thanks.

Nix Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 01:31 AM EST

Huh. That actually didn't suck. Maybe it was the length misleading me, but that looked very entertaining.

Karen Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:52 PM EST

For real!!! That's incredible! TV execs suck.

Raven_Moon Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:31 PM EST

There are so many bad cartoons today. So bad in fact, that they've had to bring cartoons from the 80's back to make up for it. It would have been nice to have a cartoon like this on TV.

blair Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

sigh, why can't this happen?! i want more.

I really kinda liked that it went back to the High School years -- back to the beginning. I bet there's some stories that Joss wanted to tell when things were 'new'. An animated reset works well

Jessica-again Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:28 PM EST

I also think this would be given better reception at the present time. The fan base that Joss established with Buffy(and Angel and Firefly) has only grown larger in recent years. As dedicated as we were then, we have amassed much bigger numbers since that trifecta of awesome ended. Just look at the love for Dr. Horrible and the anticipation for Dollhouse(even my mom is stoked for that one!)... Fandom at its greatest:)

Jessica Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

::Swoon:: I heart Joss Whedon! This just makes me miss my Buffy Tuesdays even more:( I rememeber hearing about this several years ago and being so bummed that it never got picked up by a network. I agree that it would be perfect for Adult Swim...alongside Seth Green's Robot Chicken perhaps?

Lois Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

I can't beLIEVE this didn't happen! Love it!!!!

Cory Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

I love Buffy more than most of the people I actually know, so as long as Joss was involved I'd watch anything Buffy-related: spinoffs, movies, you name it. Sigh...I guess this particular project wasn't meant to be...

Amanda Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:35 PM EST

While I liked it, there was an awful lot of one-liners in that little clip. I kinda felt like I was playing the Buffy VG. Speaking of which, why don't they make more of those? They can use the story lines that they were going to use for the animated series. I loved the video games!

nini Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

I loved it I want more!!

TMB Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

it just makes ya cry. i miss buffy, too.

Hemisphire Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

I hope everyone who misses Buffy is checking out Season 8 in the comics. Joss and crew are doing a great job.

Joe C Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

I have mixed emotions about this. There is a 'been there, done that' kind of feel to the clip. But as a dedicated Buffy fan(particularly the WB years) I would watch this. I guess I'll never get the chance. Oh well, there's always Barney the dinosaur....

CJ Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Three minutes...totally hooked. I want MORE. If. Can't. Have. More....then for the love of all that is not all evil and dragon-breathy....someone please tell me how does Buffy deal with "Puff"?

Thank goodness for the Season 8 comics.

Alicia Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

Bring it ON, Bring it ON!!

Mozz Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

who do i have to write, cojole or sleep with, to make this thing happen?!

Jimi Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

ok.. what petition do i have to sign to get this series created? though, i kinda agree about "oh no, not the High School days again" comment, but.. it would certainly be cool to have the whole gang back.. cordy too! *sigh* it's depressing that this didn't get picked up.. I hate most cartoons these days, but that caught my attention and it was only 3 mintues long!

Rob Grizzly Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

This looked FANTASTIC! The tone, the voice work- How did this show not happen? It's perfect.

(Though I disagree about BTAS comparisons. That animation is much more stylized than this.)

Sven Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

As much as I liked the original series (own all seven seasons), this clip just makes me think "been there, done that". If they picked up where the series ended, then it might be of interest. But to look at the high school years again, all I can ask is why?

C Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:12 AM EST

The voice artist for Buffy is Giselle Loren, who did the same awesome job for the Buffy video games.

C Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

This makes me sad too. I would have loved to watch this every week.

Ben Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

This was awesome. And made me sad. I miss my Tuesday nights of Buffy.

Danielle Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

This was fantastic! *sigh* It makes me miss Buffy as well.

Crystal Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

Want more. I miss Buffy. And can we just point out the utter greatness of Giles in that?

Laura Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 08:20 AM EST

I can't believe I didn't know about this until this post. I agree with the idea that it would fit well on Adult Swim...aw, now I'm just gonna be sad about it.

Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:52 AM EST

Oh sadness! I wish this was a go!!! It would be awesome!

John Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:34 AM EST

I watched this clip yesterday and it made me extremely sad. Why was this not picked up??? I had reservations about an animates series but this far exceeded my expectations. I miss Buffy!

jcarla Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:32 AM EST

I want more! I'm so afraid to ask if this was suppose to be on Fox, rather than Kids WB. This would be so perfect for Adult swim!
