'America's Next Top Model' transgender contestant

Aug 14, 2008, 05:08 PM | by Lisa Raphael

Categories: 'America's Next Top Model', Reality TV

Isistopmodel_l Ty Ty, her fabulous Jays, noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker, and a supermodel du jour will be back on September 3 for Cycle 11 of CW's hit series America's Next Top Model. This time around, as per ush, the spotlight will most likely center on one girl. Not because she's short(ish) like Cycle 3's Eva, or plus size(ish) like Cycle 3's Tocarra, or grew up on the streets(ish) like Cycle 10's Marvita, but because the show is going to feature its first transgender contestant -- 22-year-old Isis (pictured).

I hope that Tyra and crew won't turn one contestant's gender into a circus sideshow for the ratings. (Which will be tempting, as those ratings should be good.) At its best, Top Model can seem almost progressive, with a diverse panel of judges and guests like Benny Ninja and his vogueing divas straight out of Paris is Burning. But the show also tends to go the Tila Tequila way, highlighting whatever it is that makes a girl "different" -- Cycle 5 contestant Kim's sexuality, Cycle 10 winner Whitney's weight -- and having that fact beaten repeatedly into the audience. If Isis is touted as "the transgender contestant" and has to explain her sexuality and gender every time she's on screen, it will be even more exhausting than hearing Tyra list the prizes for the winner during each elimination.

Do you think Isis will get a fair shake? Or will Tyra et al make her gender the focal point of the season?

I am transgendered also, and my friends keep tellin me to be a model for the TG community magazines and stuff like that. I soooooo want to do this in the worst way, but in this society people are sooooo damn judgemental, and I agree with one post on here......DO YOUR EFFIN HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU THINK YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT WHAT A TG PERSON IS!!!!!!

Tanya Jade Wed, Jan 21, 2009 at 05:17 AM EST

I for one am very excited about this, i believe she should be given a fare go and i would not be surprised if Tyra makes he condition a focal point all though it should be discreet. us transgenders dont ask to be born this way all we want is to be who we realy are inside, just imagin if it where your child or brother mother sister or father? even best friend. i hope for her sake she wins. i love all you who support us and all of you who can relate. xo feel free to add me if your TG. lotl_babes@hotmail.com xo

Educate yourself, so that you can educate your family. It's rude and animal like when someone treats you like an enemy for no reason , because they are not born perfect. We have it had enough in life trying to get jobs, and make a living for ourselves. Babies are born everyday with imperfections, and a child knows that they are different at a young age, the parents say "it's a phase and they will grow out of it", then freak out when they grow up and become what they have always been mentally. Listen to your kids, they know what they need.

David Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 12:30 AM EST

I spent one hour reading all the comments and find it very interesting. To all the people who cant understand transgender people I would advise you to do some research and educate yourself instead of maintaing such a bigoted and narrow view. Transgender people deserve to be respected in this world and for some of you it may be easier to accept it if you consider the possibility of a third sex. Transgender people are different. They are very emotional people and have a unique outlook on their life that we can all learn from. They show immense courage, humour and humility. You dont need to be an expert on such medical matters but the key issue is hormones. Someone below mentioned about the fine line between men and women and they are absolutely right. We are all people.
But the issue here is Isis and her attendance on the ANTM. The competition is about modelling. If she can model better than the others she will win. If she does not win I hope she continues modelling and inspires others.

"Most xxx look like women, and many never know - but that doesn't mean there aren't unusual features associated with it - and that doesn't mean people don't get unwanted attention from those features. The reason why I listed that one last was because it is the most 'passable', save the medical problems."
Yes, Sarah, I am aware of all of this as all of the above applies to me. I was trying to show how making everything all about one person and the differences of one person is irritating. If Isis is continually seen as the odd girl out, or the token "different" model, this will annoy viewers. That is all I am saying.

Sarah Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

That may be true for you, Prudence, but I know several people who fall into all three catagories (worked with a support group a friend belonged to). XXX is the least commonly diagnosed - and it is most commonly found when a person develops medical conditions associated with it. Most xxx look like women, and many never know - but that doesn't mean there aren't unusual features associated with it - and that doesn't mean people don't get unwanted attention from those features. The reason why I listed that one last was because it is the most "passable", save the medical problems. The other two groups are a bit more troublesome. Most can't reproduce in either catagory, those with X are small and usually never develop traditional feminine charactoristics, those with XXY often have gender confusion, inability to reproduce, and can be born with male and female "parts". There are several other rare sex v gender issues that do cause problems - so yes, you were fine - so don't make it about you.

Joe Gantz Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

Hello. I am the producer of Taxicab Confessions and we have been including rides on transgender folks for a dozen years. I give Tyra Banks a lot of credit for including Isis this season. Transgender men and women have an amazing perspective on life and relationships, and Isis will undoubtably add a lot to the series. We have a series on our network, www.CrushedPlanet.com , that follows a group of transgender beauty pageant contestants, called Gender Blender. These women show a strength and honesty and sense of humor that is truly inspiring.

Prudence Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

I'm going to hope and pray that Isis is not the new version of Heather. I wish her all the best of luck, but if the series starts to center on her and the fact that she is transsexual - I am assuming she is a full physical female, at least in most ways - I will have some bones to pick.

Sarah, I am a former model and I do have Trisomy X. I did not know this at the time of my modeling. Most Triple-X women are never diagnosed. My sex chromosomes do not make me any less female! Imagine how ridiculous it would be to have a category entitled, "Female, Plus Additional Female Chromosome(s)" in the gender scope. "Me and my girls" are classified as female, plain and simple. Granted, the original term for the condition was "super females."

See what I've done here? I've turned this into being all about me, and people like me. That is what Heather did in the previous season of America's Next Top Model. That is what Isis may very well do. I hope otherwise.

SALLY OF LAS VEGAS Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 01:44 AM EST

im so thrilled about our new gal. i myself am transgendered. this is real life, shes not a glam gal and shes shown is a positive manner. it saddens me to hear the girls talk about her but we all know this is how people really are. i can only hope that some people out there will give her a chance and try and get to know her before you judge. i thank tyra so very much. shes ahead of the game and is opening doors! good luck isis. i stand behind you honey 100%.

Sarah Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

Second, to everyone complaining about how men should be men and women, women... where should we put people with Klinefelters (XXY) or Turner (X) or trisomy X (XXX) syndrome? You won’t give them another gender, and you won’t let them join the two we recognize (for the most part they aren’t build like typical men and women). Where are they supposed to go? Are you going to tell me they had a choice in the matter? Did God make a boo boo? Or maybe God (if that’s your thing) created everyone as they are (and want to be) because he has a master plan – to let people be happy and healthy and love one another – and acceptance (not just tolerance) is a part of that.

P.s. Gender and sex are not synonymous. Sex is our genetic code - XX female, XY male. (And there are other combinations that are far rarer). Gender is a creation of the world we live in, the roles we are placed into, or we place ourselves into. Like a skirt on a man, vs a kilt in Scotland. Knowledge is power folks, get some.

Sarah Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

yikes!
Furst, no 8 year old should be watching ANTP. I don't care what the ratings guide says about the show, it was never appropriate for a young child to watch. The woman have discussed abuse, sex, and other hot topics... they swear, run around naked and even flaunt their eating disorders. How is it easier to explain these things to an 8 year old then simply saying "she didn't feel right in her body, and when she was an adult she decided to make her body match how she felt". Seems simple. All kids have identity issues (gender, age, color - EVERY child experiences some issue within themself). If you don't want to explain something to your child that is very much a part of their world, then keep them isolated, but don't complain because it pops up on a MATURE show.

Lee Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 08:19 AM EST

Wow, mali... You would feel more comfortable if she ... didn't have a member and balls between her legs? That's all the surgery would be, you know. Why bother with breast implants? Most models don't have anything up there anyway.
She would look exactly the same, say for perhaps less of a lump down there... and... that's all you care about???
I ... I-I just do not know what else to say to that... that is just unbelievable...

mali Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 01:49 AM EST

I would like to start by saying that I'm just not confortable with Isis being on the competition, it just seems as the show wants her just to increase ratings, it will be a circus and antm reputation will be damaged. Moving to another point I think it's just not fair for her to be competing, she's not even post op! She should be in a transgendered competition...i think. I'm sorry if this upsets someone, but it would be or it would feel more fair if she was post op...I dont know, this whole thing confuses me...! i guess i still havent gotten around the fact that they are women...*confused*

Lee Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

Lela, I appreciate that you are not outright saying this person should not be a contestant or that anything is wrong with her or anything like that.

I think what you're trying to say is that you should try not to judge no matter which side of the coin you're on. Which is very true.

What I said in my first post was pretty judgmental... But it really does seem to me that some people use their religion as a wall to hide behind so they can force their hate on someone or something.
I mean, really... as if Brandy or the coward who did not name themselves actually know what God thinks. Who do they think they are saying he's unhappy? I find it disgusting that they tarnish His name for their own personal opinions.

Hey, jerks! What if it's all actually some kind of test? What if you're failing? Uh-oh, you might be going to hell, biyach!

Kurt Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

Lela (and everyone else who doesn't know)-
First of all, the appropriate way to address someone who is transgendered is as the gender they are adopting. For example, if you're speaking about a male-to-female transgendered person, refer to that person as "she." I guarantee you that if you felt you had been born in the wrong body and wanted people to see you as the other gender, you wouldn't appreciate it if people referred to you as the gender you're not portraying.
That said... please, break some stereotypes when you speak about God and be sure to spell a majority of your words correctly. Why is it always the people who are most vocal about God and Christianity who can't spell to save their lives? I know this is a blog, but when you're representing a point of view, it just makes you look ignorant when your spelling is so HORRIBLE. Do us God believers a favor and take some English and spelling lessons.

Purpleperson Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

Whoever thinks that there are only 2 genders out there has obviously never taken tried to learn anything about human sexuality. People can be born with more than an XX or XY chromosomes. There is so little difference between men and women, in fact some people are born with both sex organs. So get over your fear of someone different. Be truly honest with yourself, if you hadn't been told she was trans you probably never would have noticed and would all be singing her praises now. I read an article that interviewed Nigel and he said that there have been trans models in the industry before, so its not like she is doing anything ground breaking. I hope she wins the whole thing cause she seems the most knowlegeable about modeling & takes great pics.

Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 08:06 AM EST

I don't think a transgender should be a contestant. This unfair to the other girl contestants. If I am not correct when auditioning you must be female between a certain age and height. This is just a way for this show to get ratings. I think its sad.

Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 02:20 AM EST

Lela Gaines it is people like you that keep the hate and discrimination alive in this world. Remember that as you're praying for your own selfishness at night.

Lela Gaines Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 01:56 AM EST

I am not surprised to see that all the people in agreement with the whole transgender gay lesbian or whatever you refer to yourself as just happen to be one yourself as for you AUTMAN YOU DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE WHEN SOMONE TEACHES THEIR CHILD ABOUT SOMETHING AS SERIOUS IS THIS MATTER YOY ARE OUT OF BOUNDS SWETTIE!!!! AND AS FOR ALL OF YOU NON GOD FOLLOWERS THAT TO IS YOUR CHOICE!! BUT I'D RATHER DIE BELIVEING IN SOMETHING THAN LIVE/DIE BELIVING IN NOTHING!!!!THAT'S WHAT THE GREAT COMMISON IS ALL ABOUT GOING OUT BEING DESICPLES TEACHING ALL MANKIND ABOUT HIM!!! SO QUIT HATING ON GOD YOU ALL KEEP CALLING CHRITIANS BAD NAMES AND SAY NOT TO JUDGE HOWEVER THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING YOU ARE JUDGING BUT AS LONG AS YOUR POINT GETS ACROSS IS ALL THAT MATTERS.I stated in my 1st post that i my heart goes out because i cannot judge anyone and my job is to pray for the whole world.

Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 01:23 AM EST

Me personally I am not a religious person. However, I have grown up being taught the christian religion. The thing I learned about christianity is that you should love everyone as a brother/sister because you are all god's children. Jesus when he came to earth he loved and "hung out" with some of the socially nonacceptable people such as prostitutes. He loved them as a sister/brother and didn't place judgement on them.

However the most shocking truth I learned while growing up a christian was that hardly any christians live up to the ideal lifestyle. They spout out things they know as "obvious wrongs" to try and make themselves look better or be a better christian. They don't see that Jesus, as the son of god, sets them apart from the other religions. And his teachings of nonjudgment are the ones they should follow.

But there are some nonjudgemental christians out there.

That whole scripture thing "Thou who hast no sin throw the first stone" thing applies to this situation.

Lela Gaines Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 01:21 AM EST

Let's all remember that American next TOP Model is a family show. One that my daughter and i watch together.I really had to do some explaining to my eight year old as i do everyday we don't have cable nor do i take my daughter to R rated movies because as her mother it's my job to protect her and monitor what she watches. As for Isis my heart goes out to (HIM) I HAVE SEVERAL GAY AND LESBIAN relatives and i can remember growing up whenever we would have family gatherings my mother would tell us not to tease or say anything that may be offensive towards them. However she told us that about everyone because it's hurtful to tease anyone rich, poor black, are white. And those are the same values that i am passing down to my daughter.I did not like the other girls questionng Isis as much as they were and i certainly did not approve of their comments but i would of appreciated a heads up about (Him) so i could of had the choice of rather are not to let my daughter view tonight's episode.

Lee Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 09:40 PM EST

What I find hilarious is that some of the girls who are already putting her down because of the way she looks... hell-freakin-o, they look just like her!!! None of them have boobs! I can't believe one of these bimbos were smart enough to point it out.

This is an important issue, just as much as gay and lesbian rights and I am so very proud of this girl for being so confident and so beautiful as she struts it!

And all of you religious jerks (no offense to non-jerk religious people) can kiss my big fat ass. I am a lesbian and as having been judged by people like you simply because of who I am physically attracted to, I don't hold your opinions in the highest regard.

Not everyone follows your faiths.

And you are only using God as an excuse to hate someone. So very Christian, of course. It's only to be expected.

Damon Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 09:38 PM EST

Kudos to Chelle for the comment and many of the positive comments. But it saddens me that someone mentioned 'too far with this gay thing' as if it's some affliction. Firstly homosexuality was not removed by the American Psychiatric Association til 1973! And then Gender Dysphoria as it is called is not the same. Many transexuals have an even harder time than their GL counterparts. Education education. Compassion.
Each of us is Unique and there will never be another like YOU in the history of the Universe. Why do some want to create problems for those just listening and trying to be 'true' to their God(dess) give Light? As a friend of my states, 'if you're not about Love then 'shhh.' And for those speaking of children, the best information you can give your children is to learn to accept/appreciate differences. You may not like it but to respect every humans' right to Life Liberty & Prosperity.

Much light to all from this

Damon Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

Wow very interesting. I tuned into the show late and found out halfway through the show, and thought - wonderful! Sadly some of the other models were insensitive during her shoot. Someone mentioned about changing skin color, it's not the same , by any means. Personally it's not an issue to me and transgender people esp. in this yea ole Amerika have a difficult time. I wish her all the best of luck. And so many people referencing the Bible, well last I remember most of the commandments were against heterosexuals! There are some people you know that nature and hormones made a mistake and too many of our kids are dieing because of insensitive people. The more we learn we are ALL equal and should be equal.
Shine on in all your greatness Isis.

Jade Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

There is a diffrence in accepting who and what people are. I am never one to judge, but lets just call a spade a spade. I hold nothing back. Wrong is wrong and right is right. Although it must be really hard to feel as though you are disliked because of your beliefs, color, gender. We (Americans) are going to far with the acceptance of this gay and lesbian thing. believe me I am all for equality, and living your life as long you are not endangering others, but we have to remember that we are speaking to a whole group of people. And this is not okay. I love everyone, and will extend my hand to anyone in need. The bible was not written yesterday, and we need to stop fighting it. We all SIN, and we need to ALL work on it. I do not condone any sin cast into the light as okay. Tyra has went too far, and people who agree need to truly sit down and think of not just them, but the world as a whole. WWJD? Love you and accept you, but let you know that you are wrong at the same time

wakeforce Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

Even though isis is beautiful. I think her chances for being a top model is nil. even adrienne from season 1 is not a household name. It is very obvious from the comments transgenders are not accepted. If I as a black man wanted to change the color of my skin because "I was born in the wrong body", people would say that I am crazy!

toyouxwithlove Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

Oh, and I agree with what Chelle said. I'm a Christian, too. :]

toyouxwithlove Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

You guys do realize that there's such a thing as being transgender by birth, right? And this is probably the case.

It's true, no matter how much you change your body, you're always going to be the way you were born. That's why I stopped dying my brown hair. That's why I stopped straightening my beautiful curls (and i am white, so no, not just blacks have curls). Accept who you are! Love who you are!

toyouxwithlove Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

I believe that you were to COMMENT on what you thought about her being on the show!? NOT JUDGE, as I believe you have a RIGHT TO CHOOSE, not to JUDGE!! As a raised Catholic I am to not like anyone, and JUDGE everyone. To bad not doing it, to each his/her own!! This catholic is pretty open minded since I had a Black son when NOT married!! Isis, I find beutiful anyway she/he chooses to show us!

SmilingWithMyEyes Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 08:27 AM EST

Didn't anyone else things Jasleen from a few cycles ago seem a touch tranny-ish?

Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 06:59 AM EST

I'm happy that there will be some diversity in different fields now. They have to branch out and show that everyone is beautiful. Good luck, girl!

Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 03:50 AM EST

Does anyone think that ANTM is already focasing on this chick/dude? I mean it can't be random that the article was written and that people are talking about it already.

Sarah Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 01:30 AM EST

Super tall, underweight, clearly altered features - seems like any other top model to me. It would be one thing if this person tried to hide being transgendered - I do find that bothersome - but if this Isis looks good enough in woman's clothing to make young girls vomit up their dinner to look like hir (him/her for those who don't know), then shes doing her job, and why should we care? (Yeah the chubby barbie win didn't convince me that modeling will change - she'll fade out quickly... oh wait she already did).

physis Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

Some of you people need to hit google or wikipedia and look up the differences between transgender, transvestite, drag queens etc. they are NOT the same thing. I for one hope they don't focus on the fact that Isis is transgendered but now that its out that is all that anyone will be talking about. I'm glad she is on the show. Her story and situation hits very close to home with me.

Dan Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 08:36 PM EST

"Anatomy = gender, regardless of how you "feel"." Wrong. Anotomy = sex. the concept of gender is one imposed by society. Femininity and masculinity, those are all societal norms. People need to learn to accept and find beauty in all its different forms. More power to Isis and to people struggling with an issue like that. Salud.

vouge12345 Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

chelle you are a true christian thanks for your comment
isis rules it about time we had a woman like her on this show young transgender people need someone to look up to !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

Saying that someone born with male genetalia is a man isn't being "judgemental" - it's stating a plain fact. Anatomy = gender, regardless of how you "feel". Just because you don't like a physical characteristic about yourself doesn't radically changing it via surgery doesn't make it what it is. You can still respect someone without condoming their wrong/poor choices.

Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

I believe in dressing however you feel comfortable - not how you're "supposed" to dress in terms of what's feminine or masculine. If you're a woman and you'd rather wear pants than a skirt, that's fine. If you're a guy and you wanna wear a pink shirt, great! But slicing and dicing up your body via surgery because you "feel" like you're another gender is wrong. Your genitalia is what technically and DEFINITIVELY determines your gender. I'm not saying Isis is a bad person (for all I know, he/she could be the sweetest, nicest person ever) and I mean no disrespect, but not accepting how you were anatomically created is wrong.

Moreover, allowing this person in a competition for women only is not fair to the thousands of non-transgender girls who would give anything to compete on America's Next Top Model. It's not like they couldn't find enough real women for the show, so you know they HAD to purposely pick Isis for ratings/controversy.

I am African-American - something I had a hard time feeling proud of growing up because of how poorly blacks are represented in the media [as gangsters, crackheads, prostitutes, etc.]. I proud of who I am now, but do you think if I would have dyed my hair blonde, bleached my skin and got a nose job because I wanted to be white, people would have accepted me as white? Heck no! Or what if a white person got a perm, a really good tan, and had their face altered to look more ethnic because they "felt like a black person on the inside" do you think they the NAACP would let them be a leader in their organization? Of course not. Gender is no different than race. If you're born with male hardware, you're a male, no matter how much mascara you put on.

Ash Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

Top model SAYS it is out there to make it seem that the modeling industry isn't shallow and looks beyond what is considered beauty in the average eye. But, I'm sorry i think we all know that some of the contestants are a little far fetched for the modeling industry. No don't get me wrong, I LOVE top model. But, we all have seen season where you know there is a girl that is just butt ugly. And sure its great that Tyra tries to show the world how beautiful you can be (with makovers, haircuts, make-up stylists, and professional photographers) but thats not how modeling really is. Your always not skinny enough, not sassy, tall ect ect. But i believe that Tyra gives the 'different' contestants more leeway on the show. Which is entertaining, and very nice but not realistic. I believe this girl will get the upper hand because she is the one that will bring viewers in for the ratings. Reality TV what can you expect though?? WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO VOTE!! fuch american idol, model all the way.

Mel Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

I hate that every season of ANTM has to 'make a statement'. I don't care who the contestants are I just wish the winners would truly become top models as the show's title suggests. Do we see these girls becoming 'famous'? It's more of a soap opera than a contest. They should focus on the fashion/modeling aspects and show us what the winners actually get from winning this "contest". If a girl has the potential to be a model than she should be on the show ... even if she's a lesbian, transgendered, fat, whatever ... I just wish that the winners would actually become top models and not just get 15 minutes and a picture with Tyra.

Deena Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

As a transgender woman I can only hope it will be a positive light. Tyra has been supportive in the past of all people.

For those haters, don't watch! Easy as pie.

Tranarchy Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

Hi I know I have not read all there is to read on these comments yet. I have read enough to warrent a response in general to those that have expressed un educated hate towards those of us that have Gender Dysphoria. I am also a Transgender woman. I am proud to admit that but it is a shame that the producers couldn't just mention it once on the show and drop it and let Her be Herself. I myself have to explain my gender to a number of people but only because of the fact that I am an advocate for Transgender care and Transgender rights in this country. She is very beutiful in fact I would not be suprised if she wins and if she does then maybe some of you that blindly hate will take the time and do some research on what we have to go though on a daily basis. What kind of rights we do not have that you take for granted. Maybe you will look at your selves in the mirror and realize that you have what we want a normal life in the right body. Maybe you will also see it in your self to accept US

sad Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

has the show gone down in ratings so much that they had to resort to this. i wonder how the constant feel. i for one would be pissed. if he can go on why can't a regular man go on as well. i mean really. look if someone wants to be a man or women fine but realize this you will always be a true man or women you can chop and sew and put on as much lipstick but you will always be a man. genetics rules out a legal document. i hope this show flops

Arjai Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 05:06 PM EST

I like what Chelle said best, so I'm reposting it:

Chelle Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 11:28 PM EST

You know, I'm a Christian, and everyone who's saying 'God isn't happy' or whatever... have you missed the whole point of Christianity? To love others, accept others, and to embrace all children of God as our brothers and sisters? Besides which...the body is secondary to the soul, and God's words teach us that soul and body must be in harmony. If Isis has a female soul, then all she's doing is making sure her body is in harmony with it - as God teaches. Isis looks like a fabulous woman and it must have taken a lot of courage for her to agree to do the show, so more power to her! I will be rooting for her.

I am so proud of ANTM for doing this. I have always been a fan of Tyra, and am now even more so.

I agree that it will be made a huge issue on the show, though.

It is an abomination unto GOD.

Bob Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

Get a life everyone, this is ACE. About bloody time they had some trans people on tv that are a GOOD representation instead of some Dads in a dress, cringe. Go ANTM (y)

Lary Crews Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

Folks, we must remember that God and Christianity are mythical constructs devised by frightened peasants 2,000 years ago. It's not like it's all real!

As for a transgendered contestant... so what?

RP Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 08:59 AM EST

That said, I think it's too much to hope for to think that this won't be mentioned every 5 minutes.

RP Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

@ Maroon: You don't know that they think G-d made a mistake because 1) you don't even know if they believe in G-d and 2) if they do they don't necessarily believe that it's G-d's fault.

What about people who are born missing limbs? What about conjoined twins? Does wearing prosthetics or surgically separating twins also mean you're saying G-d did something wrong?

val Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

Transgenders are probably uniquely qualified for modeling because the prevailing beauty standard (very tall, super thin, large eyes, long, full lashes) are not always found on ordinary women. A woman who is "pretty" in an ordinary setting often doesn't make it in front of the cameras and vice versa.

Maroon. Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

This is awful. Saying that you're a "woman born physically a male" is saying that God made a mistake. God doesn't make mistakes.

We "Judging Christians" aren't judging. These people are. They're judging what God has made and saying he did something wrong. There's NO way you could possibly justify this.

Ramred Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 05:57 PM EST

Isis, I can be reached at 404-595-3366. Call me after the show and I will take care of you forever. Love, Ramred.

Jessica Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 05:53 PM EST

i shall no longer ever watch america's next top model. THIS IS JUST PLAIN WRONG!

chelsea Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

aw, she's a cutie. glad to see a little diversity on television.

Vanessa Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

I think it's a wonderfully courageous step that Isis has taken. She has a great opportunity to shine for the whole transgendered community. It's somewhat predictable that Fox would stoop so low. I suppose they're too busy taking the speck out of our eye to worry about the plank in their own. If only a prominent religious figure had spoken out against judging one another...

Hugs,
Vanessa

I would date her... I think think black girls r hot even some trans. White girls have a atttitude problem, wasting their life chasing money or panties makes me sick.. an all religion does is keep the population down. my best friend is a ghost, does that make me a freak, well, what about the religious nuts? They are also a freak, live and let live world wake up

yatzee Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

this is an amazing break-through for the trans gender community-- because most of them look really good to model I hope the best for Isis

Eric Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

What is next? Drag queens! I have a friend who is transgender and I respect the choice that has been made. The only thing is that the person who is transgender cannot change the genetic code that they were born with. It may look like a woman who use to be a man, but genetically it is still a male. This is all cosmetic. You are what you are and and it really doesn't matter. We are all people and God loves us no matter what we are. People are not perfect and it is up the show to allow transgender people.

Pagan one Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 11:22 PM EST

It is going to be funny as hell when the world decays and mankind has run its course, and that the only hope for civilisation is that those left need to procreate like crazy to save us and the normal straight people left find out that their only possible breeding partners are not what they seem. If you were born with X or Y chromosones then that is what you are. Anyone who disagrees with that doctrine really needs to be put down because you do not add to the human condition you erode it.
Why the hell do sick people like this have a right to bring the rest of us down. Wouldn't the money spent making these freaks what they are not be better spent on people who know what they are and need the benefit that real mankind can offer them in terms of medicine instead of reinforcing these sick mental cases twisted views of what life is? I was born a man and will die a man, not some twisted freak who can't handle the reality of the life i was given. Freak show

Steve Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 11:16 PM EST

Wow... I wish her the best in the show.. However all the Hateful Christians how can you call yourself one if u are Judging people. You say that god doesn't approve of her being transgender when he also said don't judge....

Henry Baggs Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

to esjay- very good post! at least until the last sentence. no- our God teaches love, repentance, and obedience. God loves the sinner, but hates the sin- because that is what keeps us from Him. As an Entity which is all holy, God cannot tolerate that which is not holy and in keeping with His commands. Tolerance of evil and sinfull rebellion are not qualities of our God.

VMB Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

This is a wonderful move. It's about time that the media acknowledges the transgender community. I believe this will be a cultural shock for a lot of people. Especially considering that many get the issues of sexuality and gender mixed up. Well, this season should be very interesting. I also feel it is pretty sad that people are referring to Isis as a freak of nature. No judgement needed. Isis is a beautiful woman, and if that's how she chooses to identify... then yes, that's exactly how I will choose to treat/identify her. Congrads.

OPRAHOMG Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

So am I gay if I find him-her attractive? Does it have a weenie..vajayjay? If Oprah & Gail have a child is this it all grown up?

dave Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

Yeah, like this is really a surprise to the producers. Give me a break. This cross-dressing freak should be eliminated for being dishonest in his representation. He doesn't belong in an all girl contest. He isn't qualified (doesn't have the right parts)

Sarah Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

Slezak and co. - Please PLEASE make an america's next top transgender doll video. The comic possibilities are endless. Just think - you could put a wig on a Ken doll or put a G.I. Joe in a mini....

To be serious for a sec though, I do think it is great that they are being open-minded enough to let a transgender woman compete. But you know Tyra is going to hit us over the head with it... "On the one hand, I have a beautiful girl who takes just "pretty" pictures and then I have a former man that looks like a beautiful woman on film. I only have one picture in my hand....."

Esjey Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

First transgender contestant? You mean Jade and Jaslene were actually *born* women??? (Seriously, Isis looks more womanlike than a lot of former contestants on this show.)

To those of you concerned about your children's well-being, how about not letting them watch a TV show that involves nearly-nude girls, loads of profanity, a few sexual references, girls being told to lose weight when they're severely underweight as it is, lots of drinking, etc., etc. Furthermore, if you have a problem discussing gender identity and sexuality with your children, why are they watching a show where half the people are gay anyway? If you have a problem with something on TV, turn the thing off. Maybe instead of sticking your children in front of the tube and then b****ing about what's on it, you could turn it off and let them read a book or play outside.

And to those of you who are going to sit there and go on about how angry God is - doesn't your "God" preach love, understanding, and acceptance?

MeMyselfAndI Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 11:51 PM EST

He won't be the first one to leave this season. They'll keep him around for the ratings.

Ick. I guess it wasn't enough to have pretty girls. Sad.

Nora Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

Awwwww look at Krissy she is so motherly and ever so politically correct.

"You're kids"

Are you bored housewife or a kindergarten teacher?

When I first heard the news I thought that it isn't fair if a former guy had an operation and altered his appearance, all of the girls on a show are natural. But then I took a look at contestant, the girl's look is averaged. I have seen better looking trannies. I think she will last in the competition due to all the controversy but she will not win.

(And FYI, in original translations of the Bible, it was simply said 'man and woman were created in God's image'. And God doesn't have a set gender. There isn't a single passage in the Bible that says anything negative about transgendered peoples, so stop trying to put words in God's mouth.)

Anyway, I'm torn on this issue. I do wish Isis the best of luck, because she deserves it, but I really hope that this isn't turned into a spectacle. She doesn't deserve that, and neither does the trans community.

I think it's pretty obvious that Tyra and co. will make a big deal about Isis being transgendered- they love a story they can exploit. If Isis actually has a legit shot at being ANTM, more power to her, but I think Tyra and co. will turn her into a "circus sideshow for the ratings" and boot her off once they think her story's gotten old.

SanAnto Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

I wish Isis the best. I'm dreading the season already though because it hasn't even started & the hateful "christians" are already posting.

Richie Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

Ashely, you're really completely stupid. You obviously have NO idea about transgender issues, so don't go saying that transgenders are "whack in the head". Also, to the puss who couldn't even put their name down, God isn't pleased with transgenders because something that does not exist can't be pleased!

Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Jesus was a P I M P.

Go Jesus

Boo transvestites

Brandon Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

The name of the show is called America's Next Top Model. There for man or woman gay or straight black or white short or tall fat or thin TRANSGENDER or NOt can be the next top model. I hope she wins.

Nose Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

To the person who didn't even put a name on their post, that's a nice excuse to let yourself be a bigot and a jerk. If you believe in God, you're supposed to aspire to live the way he wants us to. You can't just say, "Oh well, it's too hard, I can't be like God." Jesus hung out with tax collectors and prostitutes, who were the outcasts of his time. Next time, why don't you listen when you're in church.

Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

I completely agree with you Brandy there is WAY too much crap on tv. I agree also that God is not pleased with these people and it isn't possible to love everybody no matter what. Only God can do that

Ashley Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

I think that transgender people are wack in the head and I don't think saying he/she is b.s either unless you are transgender yourself. That is my opinion and whatever you say about my opinion doesn't hurt my feelings because I know that I'm right.

Ania Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 01:32 PM EST

Though I did forget to agree with you that Brandy & girly are being unreasonable, because I do agree with that!

Ania Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

Okay, Krissy, not everyone is an expert on transgender people. The people who are posting are confused, therefore they say, he/she because they are confused! They don't know what being transgender is all about. So lay of them, will you?

Krissy Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

Jordan-
Isis is a woman, so you can drop the "he/she," "him/her" b.s. You're talking about one person, so pick the appropriate pronoun and stick with it.

Brandy, girly, etc.-
Grow up. When are you going to realize that there are way more people out there that AREN'T like you than there are like you. You're kids will learn about and meet different people in their lives any way, so why don't you step up, be an adult, and teach them to be open minded before they make fools of themselves like you do.
Regardless of your beliefs, you'll never be able to change anyone from what they already are. It's people like you that make me so sad for the world.

Jordan Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

I think all this publicity is bad, but I think if this girl/guy does well then he/she will make it. You havet to really look at him/her to really see its a guy...I think she/he will do well by my opinion...Maybe win..I remember a few seasons ago a transender didnt make it but he/she look good...I think if Tyra lets him/her in then a guy should be able to tryout for the show

Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

Yeah, well that show has always had a lot of freaks on it.

Seether Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

Why are you letting your children watch tv? This is an adult program not seseme street. Buy the Disney channel if you are going to use tv for a babysitter.

Seether Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 12:03 PM EST

Well, while they beat over the head with "issues", I think that the points need to be made over and over. What qualifies for beauty? What quanitfies beauty? Is Toccara, Malvita, and now Isis beautiful? I've been looking at the Ugly NY modeling agency website and for the life of me I really don't know what qualifies as either ugly or beautiful.

antmfan Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

i almost wish they hadn't told us until after the cycle's over so Isis isn't raked across the coals by people like Brandy. people are people. men are supermodels, they walk the catwalk, and there's nothing wrong with it. women are supermodels, they walk the catwalk, there's nothing wrong with it. just because a person has questioned their gender role doesn't make them bad, wrong, or unholy; it makes them stronger in self knowledge and love. i applaud Isis for her strength to accept herself and have the confidence to take her beautiful self on national television to persue her personal dreams. most people, women or men, never have the extent of self clarity, self respect, dignity, and self acceptance in their lives to overcome their fears and be exactly the person they truly want to be. if Isis is happy being a woman we should all accept it and let her be happy.

Summer Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

Brandy...seriously? It's all over the place, not just on TV. Walk outside hun! I mean get real. Transexual people are everywhere...some you can tell and some you can't.

I say go ahead on Miss Isis!
The rules of the contest says nothing about gender or anything to the fact. So get over it. You dont HAVE to watch the show, but I'm sure you will. "Love thy neighbor as thyself" also "Judge not lest ye be not judged" Sound familar?!?!

Shanda Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

There is nothing wrong with a transgendered person being on the show. I think it is proof of how versitile models really are: there are lesbians, there are plus-size so why not trans-gendered too? I for one think she is very very beautiful and I wish her all the best. You can bet I'll be at my TV on the 3rd to see how her potential career pans out. Some of you need to quit being so shallow and narrow-minded. Open you minds to the fact that today's society is more varied and colorful than it's ever been. Go Isis! You go GIRL!!!

Kelly Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

I have to admit, like t3hdow said, I know very little about being transgendered and I do consider myself to be very liberal minded. So, maybe the fact that Tyra et al will talk about this issue nonstop (and they will!) will bring more understanding and awareness to the issues. I just hope that Isis is prepared to talk about it every week and that some good will come out of it.
Brandy, I hope, for your children's sake, that you will let go of that intolerant attitude towards people who are not exactly like you. If you open up your eyes and look around a little you'll realize that nobody is exactly like you, and isn't that kind of great? People are just people, we're all trying to live the best life that we can.

Citizen Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

This is not RIGHT! While people can cosmeticlly alter their gender they cannot change the true essence of what they are - what God made them to be: "Male and female he created them." This sickness has got to stop. I am ashamed and feel sorry for those who are fooled by the twisted aspects of the modern sciences. There is no way to alter one's DNA - genetic composition so that a person can claim to be a gender/sex that he or she is not. I will NOT be watching Ms. Banks's show this season.

ANONYMOUS Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 08:56 AM EST

YA all in to stop talking about isis i know her , shes madd pretty & she has an great personality and she has a chance to become americas next top model , & for ya that are asking , yes shes legally a FEMALE !

Nose Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

Brandy, if you're so worried about your children, perhaps you shouldn't let them watch ANTM, where girls are constantly at each other's throats, a size 8 girl is considered "plus-size", already stick-thin girls are told to lose weight, and various other things that send a bad message to children. The fact that this woman used to be a man is really not a huge issue, and she looks as good or better than some contestants that have been on the show before. If you can't explain topics like this to your kids, I worry about the adults they'll turn out to be.

And as far as God goes, I was always taught that the most important commandment was to love your neighbour as yourself, so perhaps you should get off your high horse and become more accepting of people with differences. Your children will only be better for it.

That being said, you know Tyra is going to mention it at every possible opportunity.
