Remembering Estelle Getty

Jul 22, 2008, 02:55 PM | by Adrienne Day

Categories: In Memoriam

Getty_l Few things were certain when I was growing up, but The Golden Girls was one of them. More Saturday nights than I care to admit were spent in the company of four plucky gals: Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia, a diminutive Sicilian firebrand who was infamous for her Tourette-like zingers and no BS 'tude. Golden Girls went on to win four Golden Globes and numerous Emmys, including, for Getty, in 1988, one for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series.

Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia and died on July 22 at the age of 84, wasn't always a sitcom queen. She got her start in Yiddish theater, but didn't break out until 1981, when she played Harvey Fierstein's mother in the Broadway play Torch Song Trilogy. She also had small roles in Tootsie (1982) and Mask (1985). In 1985 she started on The Golden Girls, which was an instant hit and quickly became a staple of NBC's Saturday night lineup. Getty later reprised the role of Sophia on The Golden Girls spinoff The Golden Palace (1992), and played the part of Grandma Estelle Little in the film Stuart Little (1999).

Visit our Golden Girls 20th anniversary tribute, as well as our New TV Classics gallery, check out some classic Getty YouTube clips after the jump, and feel free to share your memories -- and favorite Golden Girl moments -- below.

I never watched the show when it first came out, I'm sad to say, but I never miss an episode now. I'm sure I've watched them all but I watch them in the morning and at night. It's like therapy, they always make me laugh. I was very saddened to hear about the loss of our beloved Sophia. We all know she is watching over us and how she enlightened our lives with her sassy self. We love you Sophia!

Estelle brought joy to many. She will truly be missed, one of a kind lady that will never be forgotten. It's nice to know that we have a true angel looking over us.

rae Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:17 PM EST

Even though the Golden Girls started a little before my time, watching it as a young girl through my teenage years, Sophia was my favorite character of the four. her witty comments and wise cracks always gave me a chuckle whenever i watched. i'll miss estell very much.

HelenJeanMckenna Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

I could not enjoy any series more than The Golden Girls. When their sitcom was released on DVD that was my request for birthday, Xmas etc. Thanks to you all for the most marvelous sitcom...I still laugh as though it were the first. Estelle Getty you will be truly missed...God Bless You!

PUMPKIN Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

I WILL NEVER FORGET SPUNKY AND FIESTY SOPHIA PETRILLO(ESTELLE GETTY). NOT A DAY GOES BY THAT I DONT WATCH THE GOLDEN GIRLS. NEXT TO CHARACTER DOROTHY(BEA ARTHUR), SOPHIA IS MY FAVORITE. SOPHIA COULD ALWAYS MAKE ME LAUGH BUT DOROTHY REMINDS ME OF MYSELF, SHE'S MEAN AND SPEAKS HER MIND. I HATED TO HEAR OF ESTELLE'S PASSING. BUT AS LONG AS I AM ALIVE, I WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH GOLDEN GIRLS AND ENJOY EVERY EPISODE MADE. MY HEART GOES OUT TO ESTELLE'S FAMILY AND THE OTHER LADIES OF THE GOLDEN GIRLS CAST. I KNOW THAT ESTELLE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AND BE VERY MISSED. I KNOW I WILL MISS HER. MAY SHE REST IN PEACE WITH THE ANGELS.

Curtis Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

Sophia: I never have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I go every morning like clock work. Every morning at 7am, I go. Too bad I don't wake up until 8!!!

China Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

I'm so sorry to hear of Estelle's passing. Although she suffered from dementia, I chose to remember her as the funny Sophia always carrying her handbag. PS I still watch the Golden Girls on Lifetime and still have a good laugh. May God Bless her soul. My sympathy to her family, and friends.

Diane Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

I'm sorry to hear of Estelle's passing but glad to know she won't have to struggle for any place now that she's in heaven. Everyone there will be laughing all the time. As an older retired person now myself I find the re-runs hysterical. Please say hello to my mother. she would have been your age Estelle but she chose smoking over living for that she's missed so very much plus love she will never know. God Bless ladies!

Donna F. Shaw Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 06:56 AM EST

God has welcomed a true angel. Family continue to hold on to your memories don't let them die.
I feel your loss I to have lost a mother and a friend. God Bless You and I will continue to Pray for you all

Pat Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

Ma you will be missed. Thanks for being there for all of us.

lyonluv Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

RIP Sophia. You made me laugh, you made me cry, but you showed me how to find the humor in the darkness of life. You will be missed

Brooke Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

Dorothy: Well, Blanche is certainly taking her sister’s novel better than I would. I would kill my sister Gloria if she ever wrote about my sex life.
Sophia: You would kill your sister over a pamphlet?

We'll miss you, Estelle. Thanks for the laughs.

Kim Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

Estelle is, in my opinion, one of the finest comic genius's in history. Her wit and one-liners as the wonderful Sophia never fail to make me laugh or bring a big smile to my face. When I did comedy in high school drama productions, Estelle was my role-model. She remains one of my heroine's, and I will miss her deeply, but the love and the laughter and the joy she brought to millions will be her legacy. Rest in peace, my golden Estelle. Heaven has welcomed one fabulously funny gal!!!

Penny Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

I was heart broken when I read of Mrs. Getty's passing. It felt like losing a member of the family. I have watched "The Golden Girls" since it debuted in 1985. And for the past 23 years it has helped me when I am blue because I knew all I had to do was turn on the tube or pop in the dvd's and I would be laughing in no time. I love all the 'Girls' but Sophia was and is my favorite. RIP Sophia. We love you and we will miss you.

GregR Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

SOPHIA: Do you know why I call you pussycat, pussycat?
DOROTHY: No, Ma, why? Because you fed me once and I hung around..............Because you used to give me yarn for Christmas?.....................Because you used to put me out at night?
SOPHIA: Because I love pussycats and I love you..................................And you were the only one in the family who could catch mice.

Jake Redman Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

Dorothy and Sophia arguing about how Sophia behaves at the shoe store:

DOROTHY: I have to go in the backroom and bribe them so they'll come out and wait on you.
SOPHIA: Those people love me.
DOROTHY: For ten dollars, they love you.
SOPHIA: You're just upset because I won't take the first thing they bring out.
DOROTHY: You won't take anything they bring out.
SOPHIA: I took you.

Mia, I hope you're checking back to see if anyone replies! Lifetime will be having a mini marathon starting at noon. The best of Sophia Petrillo, the last episode will be the one that people voted as their favorite Sophia Petrillo episode. Tune in and/or set your DVR/VCR whatever to record. :)

peace to all -- my condolences to Estelle Getty's family.

RIP Sophia -- I miss you but I have your DVDs to remember you each day.

Debbie Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

To Estelle Getty who will always be our Sophia Petrillo. This goes out to you from all of your fans who have left a comment on this tribute site:

Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
Your heart is true your a pal and a confidant.

And if you through a party
Invited everyone you ever knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say thank you for being a friend (generous actress with the perfect comic timing).

Thank you Estelle Getty!! Your memory will forever live on in reruns on Lifetime.

Mia Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

I really really hoping, praying and crossing fingers/toes that Lifetime Television shows a marathon of the Golden Girls this weekend or soon. The best of Sophia Petrillo. Like everyone else I loved the Golden Girls from the beginning of its start to the reruns on Lifetime. Reading the comments and especially the quotes from the show has me giggling at work (yes, I am on the internet doing something non-work related). I can picture every episode the quotes came from. Sophia was perfect and what made her hysterical was Estelle perfect timing. It was a show that can not be duplicated and sadly never will because heavens forbid the network executives place 4 women over the age of 50 to star in a sitcom. They would rather have 7 days of reality television than quality sitcom. GG is funny to every demographic. I loved it in college. I knew hundreds of college students who watched the late evening shows at night right before they went to bed. Some even made a drinking game out of it

To the family I send my condolences. This is to remember an outstanding lady that I grew up with through television. Through the depths of despiar she made me laugh, through the walks through fear she made me meet them head on and come out smiling, though the times of discouragement, she gave me that might coat of the lion to keep charging forward with her wacky sense of humor, and now in my middle years with failing health I have learned to use that sense of humor to keep me going and to keep an upbeat attitude. Estelle, my hats off to you my dear lady. Just don't hold on to Andrew so tight he can't come back after me when it's my time to go! Love ya!!

Lisa Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 02:08 AM EST

I read alot of comments on here from people who feel like me. Golden Girls was the only show I'd watch when I was down, I'd play my DVDs over and over and go to sllep to Golden Girls. I have watched it since it first came on. Those women feel like a part of my family. I am so sad to hear about Estelle. My thoughts are with her family. Estelle you and the girls helped me through all my hard times, God Bless You

Sal Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 01:52 AM EST

It seems that no matter how rough things were or no matter how bad I felt I could pop in the Golden Girls on my dvd player, and they could always make me smile. These women have help me through some really tough times but Sophia has always been the one to get me to crack a smile no matter how bad I felt. I am deeply saddened by her loss ... and I just wanted to say RIP and thank you for being a friend.

Wendy Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 01:04 AM EST

This show is my comfort. With out fail I fall asleep to it every night. I'm sad to hear of her passing, but know her reward is in heaven. Thank you for all the laughter, and all the comforting nights.

I was watching Golden Girls tonight on Lifetime when I found out that Sophia had past. My grandmother got me hooked on the show. I watch the show twice a day. Thanks for all the great episodes Sophia. RIP

the golden girles was always big part of my life, these women and sophia especilally kept me happy when i was so down, she kept me a life when i felt lifeless. she was my true firend when i didnt have any . i am very touched by her, and will always remember her as the one who survived anything like wars, sickness, and battel in italy, but not so much surviving rose stories. i love u sophia and will allways remember u as ma. may rest in peace. love u and i will miss u .

Hope When she will be there to greet her many fans in heaven.See you in heaven until then we'll miss you!!!

Joanie Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

I remember the episode where the girls thought that Sophia was having a heart attack and Dorothy said that when a parent dies, no matter how old you are, you might as well be 7 and she felt like an orphan. I feel a little like an orphan now with the passing of Estelle Getty, who will always be "Ma" to me.

Sean Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

All my thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of the talented Estelle Getty. Her comedic timing was amazing and many people forget that this was a great actress who succeeded in convincing us that she was the mother of an actress who was , in reality, a year older than her. The world will miss you Estelle.

Michael Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

hugofan Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

Two of my favorite lies from her..

Sophia : "What are we having for dinner?"

Dorothy : "Ribs"

Sophia : "Great. Why don't you just kick the dentures out of my mouth?"

--

Sophia : "Cabbage she serves me....thanks to you I'll be skywriting all night!"

R.I.P. Estelle

I am a BIG Golden Girls fan, ever since I was a little girl!! My grandmother and I would watch the show all the time. She said she had a friend who looked like Sophia.
My grandmother died last July 1 day before her birthday. Im so sad to here about Estelle's passing, well my grandmothers too!! But I know now my grandma will get to meat Estelle/ Sophia. Rest In Peace Sophia.
To Estelle's family I am very sorry for your loss. She was a great, and funny person. Part of her will last forever!!!

G and J Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST

It's amazing when you can have a really bad day but a Golden Girls episode and a scene with Sophia would lighten up your life. All worries would disappear and immediately you would be brought back to whats important - Friends and the Family they become. Here's to Estelle/Sophia for not only being the pillar that held that household in Miami together, but that will bring friends together forever through her remembrance.

Julie H. Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 07:09 PM EST

I'll miss her sense of humor when she was on the "The Golden Girls" especially when she was talking about her younger days in Italy. she was always so cute as "Dorothy's mother" Estelle Getty looked to be a very sweet person.

Stormee Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

I have watched the Golden Girls since I was born, literally. I used to watch it with my Grandmother who passed away in 2001. Since then, I continued to watch every weekday on Lifetime. It provided me somewhat of a solace between my Grandmother and I. When my husband bought me the complete seasons box set, I was overjoyed. I will miss Estelle, even though I did not know her personally, not only for her infectious character Sophia, but for the connect she provided me with to my own Grandmother. My prayers are with her family, and I will continue watching... not only for my Granny, but for Sophia now too.

Sophia Lover Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

I used to watch Golden Girls just for comfort, even though I was 4 when the show came out, I watched the reruns and loved it. Sophia had such humor and wit! Estelle was brilliant playing her. She was Sophia. And the chemistry she had with the rest of the cast was admirable. May Estelle Getty rest in peace, she was a fabulous actress and will remain in my fondest memories forever.

Raquel Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

I've been watching "The Golden Girls" with my grandma ever since I was 8. We love watching it together, and my grandma always loves Sophia. She can relate to the comedy for an 80-year old. And she will be missed.

Carolyn Derrick Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

My sister and I would spend many a Saturday night at my grandparents house when we were growing up. My sister, my grandmother, and I would all get in bed to watch NBC's line-up of the Golden Girls and Empty Nest. In college I would watch it on Lifetime. This saddens me because I, like Sophia, carry my purse with me everywhere. I think I picked up this trait from her. You will be missed Estelle.

Little known fact: Tatum O'Neal was the original favorite for the part of Sophia Petrillo, but producers ultimately decided she was too "Irish looking."

Though I wasn't even born when the Golden Girls premiered (I missed it by a few years), I've been watching it as long as I can remember. I always found it strange that as a straight male I identified with 60 year old women (even now at age 21), but reading through the various comments and tributes makes me feel less strange. This is truly a tragic loss for everyone who watched and loved the show, not to mention the people who knew Estelle personally. I've never been this sad at the death of a celebrity. Goodbye, Estelle, and thank you.

I have been watching the Girls since they came out in the early eighties, and continued to watch them when Lifetime started to play re-runs. They kept me company when I was a stay at home mom. 9am+12+5+12 monday through friday.
My husband thought I was crazy because I would quote thing from the show and I would call them my friends.
I will miss Sophia but she will keep on making me laugh when I watch my boxset of golden girls!!!

I grew up watching Estelle. I still have pictures of me in diapers with golden girls on the tv. I will truly miss her great acting ability. The lessons I learned form her will live on in her memory and I am currently working on getting the Golden Girls and Golden Palace on DVD. May God bless her family, her eternal soul, and all those she has touched with her work and with her life.

B. Whitey feat. Rue McClanhan Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Yeah,
this right here
goes out
to everyone
who's lost someone
that they truly loved....
Check it out....

Seems like yesterday I used to watch your show
I ate some snacks, you played you roll
So far from Sicily with Vito and Angelo
Petrillius they came to know that
Life ain't always what it seem to be
Words can't express what'chu mean to me
Even though you're gone we still a team
Thru your family I'll fulfill your dream
In the future can't wait to see if you'll
Open up the gates for me
Reminisce sometime the nights Blanche sexed some men
Try to black it out, but it plays again
When it's real feelings hard to conceal
Can't imagine all the pain I feel
Give anything to hear half your breath
I know you still livin' your life after death

Every step I take
Every move I make
Every single day
Everytime I pray
I'll be missing you

Thinking of the day
When you went away
What a life to take
What a bond to break
I'll be missing you

We miss you, Estelle...

Allison Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

I freakin' loved the GGs and I loved Estelle Getty as Sophia the best! I think the reason I loved this show so much is because it is one of the first shows I actually remember watching as a kid. My grandmother and I would watch it every Saturday when I spent the night at her house. Fast forward 12-15 years later when my friends and I would gather in one of our dorm rooms or the TV room and nerd out on the Golden Girls. It got to where one of my friends told me, "Y'all are way too invested in this show." Impossible! Thank you Estelle! You will be missed greatly, but you'll always be a Golden Girl.

Alisha Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

I used to watch GG with my grandma, she took care of me growing up, it was her favorite show. She died when I was 12 and it was hard for me because we were so close...I continued to watch GG throughout the years, because in a way it made me feel close to her, it comforts me, even though I still get made fun of for watching it! It saddens me one of them is gone, it is like losing a grandma all over again.

Sophia was my FAVORITE one of the "girls" and I'm sad to hear about Estelle Getty's death! May she rest in peace!

Rebecca Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

I grew up without any grandparents, watching Golden Girls gave me four of them. I always thought Estelle Getty was the funniest. She made growing older a little less scary. To think you could grow old and still be a kid at heart.

"Well, pardon me while I play the grand piano..."
Watching GG on Saturday nights with my sisters and grandma was one of my best childhood memories. Thank you, Estelle, and rest in peace.

Without the Golden Girls we never would have had groundbreaking comedies like Dharma and Gregg, I Love Lucy, or Six Feet Under.

I grew up watching the Golden Girls with my Grandma and I started watching them again after the birth of my 3 year old on Lifetime. We now watch the dvd's almost every night before bed. We love you Estelle, thanks for the wonderful memories. Rest in Peace.

Blanche: "I'm abhored."
Sophia: "Glad to hear you finally admit it."
Blanche: "Sophia, I said abhored."
Sophia: "Abhored, slut, tramp, whatever."
Dorothy: "Ma, we were talking about Rose."
Sophia: "Yeah, lately she's been abhore, too."

I'm a 30 year old male, and I can't help but laugh when I see this show. It was ahead of it's time as far as "sexual" humor and had some of the best chemistry of any TV show cast in history.

You will be missed Estelle !!

Those beautiful girls got me through many sad and depressed times. Now that I'm entering my"Golden Girl" years.......I'm proud and happy to know how to do it with grace, attitude, laughter, and lots of love! Thank you Estelle.....Peace Be With You!

Nobody solves a problem like Sophia.. The Golden Girls paved the way for Sex and the City and Designing Women and hopefully more to come.

Cody Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

Estelle Getty Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

Thanks for the lovely tribute! I'm glad I made you all laugh.

Joie Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

She was always my favorite 'Girl'. She always knew what to say especially to put the others in their place. Will truly miss you Sophia/Estelle

Sophia to Blanche when Blanche asks Sophia for some words of wisdom; to which Sophia replied: "You are old, You sag, now get over it"

Second good one was when The girls find Sophia in Bed with Weinstock and Dorothy asks Sophia "what's going on here" to which Sophia replies "Afterglow"

I got Condoleeza Rice on the megaphone. Everybody wants to eat a dinosaur.

My fond memories of Estelle go back all the way to my early childhood. You see, I grew up best friends with her son, Carl, in Bayside, NY. Carl, myself and Jack, were known as the 3 musketeers. We spent every day in each other's homes, playing chess, doing homework and discussing politics.
Estelle was always a warm and generous soul. Even as little boys, we always seemed to tower over her diminutive figure as she rehearsed her lines, tirelessly for community theater plays she was always acting in. We helped with her lines, along with her husband Arthur.
After not seeing each other for many years, we met in the lobby of the theater when she played Harvey Fierstein's mother in "Torch Song Trilogy". We embraced with excitement as if no time at all had passed. Everyone who knows her shared in Estelle's joy when she joined the cast of "The Golden Girls" and she finally found the acclaim she had deserved. This beautiful, young Jewish woman played an old Italian woman to perfection

I must have gained 10lbs watching them. They were all great.

Kourtney Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

my husband always asks why I watch the Golden Girls everyday when I've already seen every episode about a hundred times....I do because it never gets old and always brings a smile to my face. Estelle was my favorite character and my thoughts and prayers are with her family.
