Remembering Estelle Getty

Jul 22, 2008, 02:55 PM | by Adrienne Day

Categories: In Memoriam

Getty_l Few things were certain when I was growing up, but The Golden Girls was one of them. More Saturday nights than I care to admit were spent in the company of four plucky gals: Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia, a diminutive Sicilian firebrand who was infamous for her Tourette-like zingers and no BS 'tude. Golden Girls went on to win four Golden Globes and numerous Emmys, including, for Getty, in 1988, one for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series.

Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia and died on July 22 at the age of 84, wasn't always a sitcom queen. She got her start in Yiddish theater, but didn't break out until 1981, when she played Harvey Fierstein's mother in the Broadway play Torch Song Trilogy. She also had small roles in Tootsie (1982) and Mask (1985). In 1985 she started on The Golden Girls, which was an instant hit and quickly became a staple of NBC's Saturday night lineup. Getty later reprised the role of Sophia on The Golden Girls spinoff The Golden Palace (1992), and played the part of Grandma Estelle Little in the film Stuart Little (1999).

Visit our Golden Girls 20th anniversary tribute, as well as our New TV Classics gallery, check out some classic Getty YouTube clips after the jump, and feel free to share your memories -- and favorite Golden Girl moments -- below.

Estelle brought joy to many. She will truly be missed, one of a kind lady that will never be forgotten. It's nice to know that we have a true angel looking over us.

rae Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:17 PM EST

Even though the Golden Girls started a little before my time, watching it as a young girl through my teenage years, Sophia was my favorite character of the four. her witty comments and wise cracks always gave me a chuckle whenever i watched. i'll miss estell very much.

HelenJeanMckenna Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

I could not enjoy any series more than The Golden Girls. When their sitcom was released on DVD that was my request for birthday, Xmas etc. Thanks to you all for the most marvelous sitcom...I still laugh as though it were the first. Estelle Getty you will be truly missed...God Bless You!

PUMPKIN Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

I WILL NEVER FORGET SPUNKY AND FIESTY SOPHIA PETRILLO(ESTELLE GETTY). NOT A DAY GOES BY THAT I DONT WATCH THE GOLDEN GIRLS. NEXT TO CHARACTER DOROTHY(BEA ARTHUR), SOPHIA IS MY FAVORITE. SOPHIA COULD ALWAYS MAKE ME LAUGH BUT DOROTHY REMINDS ME OF MYSELF, SHE'S MEAN AND SPEAKS HER MIND. I HATED TO HEAR OF ESTELLE'S PASSING. BUT AS LONG AS I AM ALIVE, I WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH GOLDEN GIRLS AND ENJOY EVERY EPISODE MADE. MY HEART GOES OUT TO ESTELLE'S FAMILY AND THE OTHER LADIES OF THE GOLDEN GIRLS CAST. I KNOW THAT ESTELLE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AND BE VERY MISSED. I KNOW I WILL MISS HER. MAY SHE REST IN PEACE WITH THE ANGELS.

Curtis Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

Sophia: I never have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I go every morning like clock work. Every morning at 7am, I go. Too bad I don't wake up until 8!!!

China Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

I'm so sorry to hear of Estelle's passing. Although she suffered from dementia, I chose to remember her as the funny Sophia always carrying her handbag. PS I still watch the Golden Girls on Lifetime and still have a good laugh. May God Bless her soul. My sympathy to her family, and friends.

Diane Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 09:56 AM EST

I'm sorry to hear of Estelle's passing but glad to know she won't have to struggle for any place now that she's in heaven. Everyone there will be laughing all the time. As an older retired person now myself I find the re-runs hysterical. Please say hello to my mother. she would have been your age Estelle but she chose smoking over living for that she's missed so very much plus love she will never know. God Bless ladies!

Donna F. Shaw Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 06:56 AM EST

God has welcomed a true angel. Family continue to hold on to your memories don't let them die.
I feel your loss I to have lost a mother and a friend. God Bless You and I will continue to Pray for you all

Pat Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

Ma you will be missed. Thanks for being there for all of us.

lyonluv Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

RIP Sophia. You made me laugh, you made me cry, but you showed me how to find the humor in the darkness of life. You will be missed

Brooke Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

Dorothy: Well, Blanche is certainly taking her sister’s novel better than I would. I would kill my sister Gloria if she ever wrote about my sex life.
Sophia: You would kill your sister over a pamphlet?

We'll miss you, Estelle. Thanks for the laughs.

Kim Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

Estelle is, in my opinion, one of the finest comic genius's in history. Her wit and one-liners as the wonderful Sophia never fail to make me laugh or bring a big smile to my face. When I did comedy in high school drama productions, Estelle was my role-model. She remains one of my heroine's, and I will miss her deeply, but the love and the laughter and the joy she brought to millions will be her legacy. Rest in peace, my golden Estelle. Heaven has welcomed one fabulously funny gal!!!

Penny Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

I was heart broken when I read of Mrs. Getty's passing. It felt like losing a member of the family. I have watched "The Golden Girls" since it debuted in 1985. And for the past 23 years it has helped me when I am blue because I knew all I had to do was turn on the tube or pop in the dvd's and I would be laughing in no time. I love all the 'Girls' but Sophia was and is my favorite. RIP Sophia. We love you and we will miss you.

GregR Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

SOPHIA: Do you know why I call you pussycat, pussycat?
DOROTHY: No, Ma, why? Because you fed me once and I hung around..............Because you used to give me yarn for Christmas?.....................Because you used to put me out at night?
SOPHIA: Because I love pussycats and I love you..................................And you were the only one in the family who could catch mice.

Jake Redman Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

Dorothy and Sophia arguing about how Sophia behaves at the shoe store:

DOROTHY: I have to go in the backroom and bribe them so they'll come out and wait on you.
SOPHIA: Those people love me.
DOROTHY: For ten dollars, they love you.
SOPHIA: You're just upset because I won't take the first thing they bring out.
DOROTHY: You won't take anything they bring out.
SOPHIA: I took you.

peace to all -- my condolences to Estelle Getty's family.

RIP Sophia -- I miss you but I have your DVDs to remember you each day.

Debbie Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

To Estelle Getty who will always be our Sophia Petrillo. This goes out to you from all of your fans who have left a comment on this tribute site:

Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down the road and back again
Your heart is true your a pal and a confidant.

And if you through a party
Invited everyone you ever knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say thank you for being a friend (generous actress with the perfect comic timing).

Thank you Estelle Getty!! Your memory will forever live on in reruns on Lifetime.

Mia Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

I really really hoping, praying and crossing fingers/toes that Lifetime Television shows a marathon of the Golden Girls this weekend or soon. The best of Sophia Petrillo. Like everyone else I loved the Golden Girls from the beginning of its start to the reruns on Lifetime. Reading the comments and especially the quotes from the show has me giggling at work (yes, I am on the internet doing something non-work related). I can picture every episode the quotes came from. Sophia was perfect and what made her hysterical was Estelle perfect timing. It was a show that can not be duplicated and sadly never will because heavens forbid the network executives place 4 women over the age of 50 to star in a sitcom. They would rather have 7 days of reality television than quality sitcom. GG is funny to every demographic. I loved it in college. I knew hundreds of college students who watched the late evening shows at night right before they went to bed. Some even made a drinking game out of it

To the family I send my condolences. This is to remember an outstanding lady that I grew up with through television. Through the depths of despiar she made me laugh, through the walks through fear she made me meet them head on and come out smiling, though the times of discouragement, she gave me that might coat of the lion to keep charging forward with her wacky sense of humor, and now in my middle years with failing health I have learned to use that sense of humor to keep me going and to keep an upbeat attitude. Estelle, my hats off to you my dear lady. Just don't hold on to Andrew so tight he can't come back after me when it's my time to go! Love ya!!

Lisa Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 02:08 AM EST

I read alot of comments on here from people who feel like me. Golden Girls was the only show I'd watch when I was down, I'd play my DVDs over and over and go to sllep to Golden Girls. I have watched it since it first came on. Those women feel like a part of my family. I am so sad to hear about Estelle. My thoughts are with her family. Estelle you and the girls helped me through all my hard times, God Bless You

Sal Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 01:52 AM EST

It seems that no matter how rough things were or no matter how bad I felt I could pop in the Golden Girls on my dvd player, and they could always make me smile. These women have help me through some really tough times but Sophia has always been the one to get me to crack a smile no matter how bad I felt. I am deeply saddened by her loss ... and I just wanted to say RIP and thank you for being a friend.

Wendy Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 01:04 AM EST

This show is my comfort. With out fail I fall asleep to it every night. I'm sad to hear of her passing, but know her reward is in heaven. Thank you for all the laughter, and all the comforting nights.

I was watching Golden Girls tonight on Lifetime when I found out that Sophia had past. My grandmother got me hooked on the show. I watch the show twice a day. Thanks for all the great episodes Sophia. RIP

the golden girles was always big part of my life, these women and sophia especilally kept me happy when i was so down, she kept me a life when i felt lifeless. she was my true firend when i didnt have any . i am very touched by her, and will always remember her as the one who survived anything like wars, sickness, and battel in italy, but not so much surviving rose stories. i love u sophia and will allways remember u as ma. may rest in peace. love u and i will miss u .

Hope When she will be there to greet her many fans in heaven.See you in heaven until then we'll miss you!!!

Joanie Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

I remember the episode where the girls thought that Sophia was having a heart attack and Dorothy said that when a parent dies, no matter how old you are, you might as well be 7 and she felt like an orphan. I feel a little like an orphan now with the passing of Estelle Getty, who will always be "Ma" to me.

Sean Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

All my thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of the talented Estelle Getty. Her comedic timing was amazing and many people forget that this was a great actress who succeeded in convincing us that she was the mother of an actress who was , in reality, a year older than her. The world will miss you Estelle.

Michael Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

hugofan Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

Two of my favorite lies from her..

Sophia : "What are we having for dinner?"

Dorothy : "Ribs"

Sophia : "Great. Why don't you just kick the dentures out of my mouth?"

--

Sophia : "Cabbage she serves me....thanks to you I'll be skywriting all night!"

R.I.P. Estelle

I am a BIG Golden Girls fan, ever since I was a little girl!! My grandmother and I would watch the show all the time. She said she had a friend who looked like Sophia.
My grandmother died last July 1 day before her birthday. Im so sad to here about Estelle's passing, well my grandmothers too!! But I know now my grandma will get to meat Estelle/ Sophia. Rest In Peace Sophia.
To Estelle's family I am very sorry for your loss. She was a great, and funny person. Part of her will last forever!!!

G and J Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST

It's amazing when you can have a really bad day but a Golden Girls episode and a scene with Sophia would lighten up your life. All worries would disappear and immediately you would be brought back to whats important - Friends and the Family they become. Here's to Estelle/Sophia for not only being the pillar that held that household in Miami together, but that will bring friends together forever through her remembrance.

Julie H. Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 07:09 PM EST

I'll miss her sense of humor when she was on the "The Golden Girls" especially when she was talking about her younger days in Italy. she was always so cute as "Dorothy's mother" Estelle Getty looked to be a very sweet person.

Stormee Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

I have watched the Golden Girls since I was born, literally. I used to watch it with my Grandmother who passed away in 2001. Since then, I continued to watch every weekday on Lifetime. It provided me somewhat of a solace between my Grandmother and I. When my husband bought me the complete seasons box set, I was overjoyed. I will miss Estelle, even though I did not know her personally, not only for her infectious character Sophia, but for the connect she provided me with to my own Grandmother. My prayers are with her family, and I will continue watching... not only for my Granny, but for Sophia now too.

Sophia Lover Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

I used to watch Golden Girls just for comfort, even though I was 4 when the show came out, I watched the reruns and loved it. Sophia had such humor and wit! Estelle was brilliant playing her. She was Sophia. And the chemistry she had with the rest of the cast was admirable. May Estelle Getty rest in peace, she was a fabulous actress and will remain in my fondest memories forever.

Raquel Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

I've been watching "The Golden Girls" with my grandma ever since I was 8. We love watching it together, and my grandma always loves Sophia. She can relate to the comedy for an 80-year old. And she will be missed.

Carolyn Derrick Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 06:29 PM EST

My sister and I would spend many a Saturday night at my grandparents house when we were growing up. My sister, my grandmother, and I would all get in bed to watch NBC's line-up of the Golden Girls and Empty Nest. In college I would watch it on Lifetime. This saddens me because I, like Sophia, carry my purse with me everywhere. I think I picked up this trait from her. You will be missed Estelle.

Though I wasn't even born when the Golden Girls premiered (I missed it by a few years), I've been watching it as long as I can remember. I always found it strange that as a straight male I identified with 60 year old women (even now at age 21), but reading through the various comments and tributes makes me feel less strange. This is truly a tragic loss for everyone who watched and loved the show, not to mention the people who knew Estelle personally. I've never been this sad at the death of a celebrity. Goodbye, Estelle, and thank you.

I have been watching the Girls since they came out in the early eighties, and continued to watch them when Lifetime started to play re-runs. They kept me company when I was a stay at home mom. 9am+12+5+12 monday through friday.
My husband thought I was crazy because I would quote thing from the show and I would call them my friends.
I will miss Sophia but she will keep on making me laugh when I watch my boxset of golden girls!!!

I grew up watching Estelle. I still have pictures of me in diapers with golden girls on the tv. I will truly miss her great acting ability. The lessons I learned form her will live on in her memory and I am currently working on getting the Golden Girls and Golden Palace on DVD. May God bless her family, her eternal soul, and all those she has touched with her work and with her life.

B. Whitey feat. Rue McClanhan Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Yeah,
this right here
goes out
to everyone
who's lost someone
that they truly loved....
Check it out....

Seems like yesterday I used to watch your show
I ate some snacks, you played you roll
So far from Sicily with Vito and Angelo
Petrillius they came to know that
Life ain't always what it seem to be
Words can't express what'chu mean to me
Even though you're gone we still a team
Thru your family I'll fulfill your dream
In the future can't wait to see if you'll
Open up the gates for me
Reminisce sometime the nights Blanche sexed some men
Try to black it out, but it plays again
When it's real feelings hard to conceal
Can't imagine all the pain I feel
Give anything to hear half your breath
I know you still livin' your life after death

Every step I take
Every move I make
Every single day
Everytime I pray
I'll be missing you

Thinking of the day
When you went away
What a life to take
What a bond to break
I'll be missing you

We miss you, Estelle...

Allison Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

I freakin' loved the GGs and I loved Estelle Getty as Sophia the best! I think the reason I loved this show so much is because it is one of the first shows I actually remember watching as a kid. My grandmother and I would watch it every Saturday when I spent the night at her house. Fast forward 12-15 years later when my friends and I would gather in one of our dorm rooms or the TV room and nerd out on the Golden Girls. It got to where one of my friends told me, "Y'all are way too invested in this show." Impossible! Thank you Estelle! You will be missed greatly, but you'll always be a Golden Girl.

Alisha Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

I used to watch GG with my grandma, she took care of me growing up, it was her favorite show. She died when I was 12 and it was hard for me because we were so close...I continued to watch GG throughout the years, because in a way it made me feel close to her, it comforts me, even though I still get made fun of for watching it! It saddens me one of them is gone, it is like losing a grandma all over again.

Tiesha Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

Sophia was my FAVORITE one of the "girls" and I'm sad to hear about Estelle Getty's death! May she rest in peace!

Rebecca Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

I grew up without any grandparents, watching Golden Girls gave me four of them. I always thought Estelle Getty was the funniest. She made growing older a little less scary. To think you could grow old and still be a kid at heart.

sga Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

"Well, pardon me while I play the grand piano..."
Watching GG on Saturday nights with my sisters and grandma was one of my best childhood memories. Thank you, Estelle, and rest in peace.

nancy Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

The girls are my heroes, and Sophia was the best. When I'm feeling low I put in a dvd of the golden girls and I'm fine.I know every episode and I laugh so hard.Sophia is with her Sal!!!!Rest my Love.

TV Expert Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

Without the Golden Girls we never would have had groundbreaking comedies like Dharma and Gregg, I Love Lucy, or Six Feet Under.

shannon Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

I grew up watching the Golden Girls with my Grandma and I started watching them again after the birth of my 3 year old on Lifetime. We now watch the dvd's almost every night before bed. We love you Estelle, thanks for the wonderful memories. Rest in Peace.

L Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Blanche: "I'm abhored."
Sophia: "Glad to hear you finally admit it."
Blanche: "Sophia, I said abhored."
Sophia: "Abhored, slut, tramp, whatever."
Dorothy: "Ma, we were talking about Rose."
Sophia: "Yeah, lately she's been abhore, too."

Dr. No Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

I'm a 30 year old male, and I can't help but laugh when I see this show. It was ahead of it's time as far as "sexual" humor and had some of the best chemistry of any TV show cast in history.

You will be missed Estelle !!

Katrina Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

Those beautiful girls got me through many sad and depressed times. Now that I'm entering my"Golden Girl" years.......I'm proud and happy to know how to do it with grace, attitude, laughter, and lots of love! Thank you Estelle.....Peace Be With You!

jamiemart Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Nobody solves a problem like Sophia.. The Golden Girls paved the way for Sex and the City and Designing Women and hopefully more to come.

Cody Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

I watch The Golden Girls all the time, it always made me smile and I loved Sophia to death. She was always so cute. Rest in peace Estelle.

Sophia to Blanche when Blanche asks Sophia for some words of wisdom; to which Sophia replied: "You are old, You sag, now get over it"

Second good one was when The girls find Sophia in Bed with Weinstock and Dorothy asks Sophia "what's going on here" to which Sophia replies "Afterglow"

George Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

My fond memories of Estelle go back all the way to my early childhood. You see, I grew up best friends with her son, Carl, in Bayside, NY. Carl, myself and Jack, were known as the 3 musketeers. We spent every day in each other's homes, playing chess, doing homework and discussing politics.
Estelle was always a warm and generous soul. Even as little boys, we always seemed to tower over her diminutive figure as she rehearsed her lines, tirelessly for community theater plays she was always acting in. We helped with her lines, along with her husband Arthur.
After not seeing each other for many years, we met in the lobby of the theater when she played Harvey Fierstein's mother in "Torch Song Trilogy". We embraced with excitement as if no time at all had passed. Everyone who knows her shared in Estelle's joy when she joined the cast of "The Golden Girls" and she finally found the acclaim she had deserved. This beautiful, young Jewish woman played an old Italian woman to perfection

I must have gained 10lbs watching them. They were all great.

Kourtney Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

my husband always asks why I watch the Golden Girls everyday when I've already seen every episode about a hundred times....I do because it never gets old and always brings a smile to my face. Estelle was my favorite character and my thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Estelle, rest in peace my golden girl. I wasn't even a teenager when Golden Girls first aired, but I watched you religiously. You made me feel that growing old was something to look forward too. Oh, how I yearned for the days when I could saw whatever I wanted and not be chastised. You were smart, sassy, sweet and hilariously funny. Definately oe of my all time favorite TV characters. Thank you for the hours of joy you brought me and so many others.

Sofia...

Thank you!

So many wonderful nights and days in front of the TV seeing four very talented women making me (an so many others) laugh our butts off. A great show with incredible writting. Estelle was an sweome actress and extremely funny, she will be missed.

:)

willa Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

I just can't get over Estelle, its like laughing at myself everyday, she gets straight to the point and I love her and the other Golden Girls, Estelle was great and will be missed. RERUNS IT IS.

Marc Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

I was too young to watch the show during the original run, but I became hooked while watching repeats when I was 14 or so years old. I grew up with these women...each of them has become very near and dear to me, which is unusal considering their fictional status. I learned a lot from and with them, I laughed with them, cried with them. Estelle Getty gave so much of herself in every episode, but never asked anything of us except our love. Estelle, you got our love. For years, you and your show thanked us for being a friend. Now, we thank you.

Anne Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

The news of her passing is very sad. I spent many Saturday nights as a little girl watching this show. My grandmother, and I(who is no longer here)used to laugh so hard, while wathching this show.

Mario Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

Blanche: "I treat my body like a temple"

Sophia: That's right, open to the plublic, night and day!"

I will miss her. RIP Estelle... RIP.

On leaving for the convent:
to Rose: "Rose, don't ever let anyone tell you you can't be what you want to be."
to Blanche: "Blanche, you're a slut!"
The greatest adjectives can't describe her! Comic genius! Incomparable memories....television well spent!

Bryan Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST

Sophia: How do my teeth? I ran them through the dishwasher. Thank You For Being A Friend. We Love You Ma!!

Dee Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

Estelle, my heart truly hurts knowing that you're gone. You will be missed, loved and admired for generations to come. As a baby, my now 4 year old daughter, would run into the room whenever GG was on. We'll miss you!!!

I used to try to pass of "Silly Rabbi, tricks are for kids!" like it was my own joke.

JimB Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

It totally sucks that EW ignored the death of the great Jo Stafford. Time noted her passing, but I guess selling millions of records doesn't always count in these pages.

James T. Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Her show was a top 10 show every year (expect the last one). That is hard to do.

Joy Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

She was so special and so sweet. I loved to hear her comments that she made to the other ladies on Golden Girls. Besides Rose, Sophia was my favorite. And I even loved to see her in the few movies she did. Estelle you will be missed greatly. Rest in peace and thank you.

RIP Estelle (aka Sofia). Among the truest comic gems.

I was very young when Golden Girls aired. Whenever I heard the theme song I would run into the room and start dancing. I called the show "Friends" and ever since then Golden Girls has been a constant in my life. Estelle Getty and her fellow castmates contributed to a very joyous part of my life. She will be missed!

SOPHIA: "Why Did Rose Throw the Alarm Clock out of the Window?"
DOROTHY: "I Don't Know Ma, Why?"
SOPHIA: "Because she's a Moron"

There are too many one-liners and stories but this one always cracks me up. Only Estelle Getty could deliver a stupid joke like this. May she rest in peace.

I loved the Golden Girls. No matter what kind of day you had you could always watch the show and it would make you laugh and lift your spirits. I still watch it every night in reruns. I love the one where they go to the murder mystery and Sophia says "Colonel Mustard, dining room, candle stick!" and also, the one where Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose had watched "Psycho" and are in the kitchen and Sophia bursts into the room with a knife and thinks it is hilarious. She makes the comment, "I did this at the home to old man Peterson and they said he would never walk........he walked." "RIP Estelle and thanks for always putting a smile on my face and making me laugh."

Mickey Scarcia Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

What a great source of entertainment she was--I never missed an episode. I have called my 3 lady friends & I as "The Golden Girls"--I visited the Ca. studio & found the hrs. of makeup she had to endure to be exhausting--she was a real trooper & entertainer.

Trent M. Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

I am heartbroken over the loss of one of TV's best characters. Golden Girl reruns brighten up the worst of days and Estelle was a major part of it. My condolences to her family.

Favorite Sophia line: "Why do blessings always wear disguises? If I were a blessing, I'd run around naked!"

RIP Estelle--we'll miss you...

Jeff Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 09:28 AM EST

Estelle Getty was truly an amazing woman. I absolutely adore her on The Golden Girls and laugh every time I see her. May she rest in peace and be remembered forever in reruns!

Sophia: I know what you're thinking - you think that your daughter is a slut because she got knocked up. Well let me tell you, your daughter's not a slut. A slut is someone who gets knocked up in the back seat of a Studebaker at a drive in movie theatre. (Turns to Dorothy) It was a Studebaker, wasn't it Dorothy?

L Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 09:28 AM EST

"Shut up, you human speed bump." (to Rose)
"Thank you, you human mattress." (to Blanche)
(Was upset about Dorothy's gambling).

Love you, Sophia! Thanks for the laughs.
Love you, Estelle! Thank you for AIDS activist heart.

You will be terribly missed!

Allison Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

I was too young to watch the Golden Girls when it was on the air, but through reruns I watched all the time. I own all the dvds and couldn't love any show more. Those 4 women are characters I consider friends. Estelle Getty was a crucial part of that show. She had some of the best lines, and delivered them like no one else could. Sometimes she didn't even have to say anything; she was just funny. (Anyone remember the Roy Orbison bit with the glasses?) The show would not have been the same without her. I was so upset to hear about her passing. I honestly feel like I lost a friend. What a blessing to know we will always have Sophia on screen at least.

Paul Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

Dorothy: Ma, I DON’T snore.
Sophia: Please! I had to turn you away from the window so you wouldn’t inhale the drapes!

Estelle Getty had what every actor wished they possess but only a select few do: the art of timing. Her portrayal of Sophia was acerbic, comic, but most of all, human. She’s the mother of all mothers. Her relationship with Dorothy was so beautiful; it makes me so happy and thankful to be able to call my own mother my friend as well. Like all the other fans here, I am a big fat GG-phile. I live and breathe the GGs and will always hold it in my heart as my favourite show of all time. There is no need for depression, sadness, or despair once you escape into a GG eppy; those four women hold your hand, take you into their home, and make everything better; they’re like my very own family. Ms. Getty, may you rest and peace and always know that your spirit lives on in your spitfire portrayal of Sophia. We love you Ma; have a big slice of cheesecake for us up there.

tonya Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

Estelle Getty is what made the Golden Girls a hit!! Since I was young and didnt go out on Saturday nights, I watched TV. This was and still is by far one of my favorite shows, some 20 years later. Remember Sophia's song, "Thanks for the Medicaid, for Blue Cross & Blue Shield, for a hip that finally heeled"!! She was one of the greatest! RIP Estelle Getty

Barb H Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

The industry will miss Estelle, she was one of a kind. I enjoyed The Golden Girls and as Rue made the comment yesterday with Kathi Gifford, it was a sister's show of friendship, we need more of these. Thank you Estelle for the memories.

Brei Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 07:56 AM EST

Ronda Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 06:50 AM EST

Dorothy: "Ma, what are you doing up?"

Sophia: "Someone left the lock off my cage!"

George Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 06:47 AM EST

If you think about it, if you move the women from Miami to New York, make them younger, single, with better fashions, and allow them to curse, you'd have Sex and the City. ;)
This was one of the best shows with one of the best casts. They all had great chemistry with each other, and the show is still funny today. My condolences to her family and friends.
A great Sophia quote, to Blanche: "Beat it, you 50-year old matterress!"

HAL Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 06:45 AM EST

THIS WONDERFUL ACTRESS MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD AND I RARELY DO THAT. SHE WAS BORN FOR THE PART OF SOFIA AND THEY WAY ALL OF THEM WORKED TOGETHER JUST WAS INCREDIBLE. Your family must be so proud of you for you are loved around the world!! I can recite every episode of the Golden Girls and can only hope that tv keeps it around for many years to come! Thank you Estelle and goodbye Sophia, we love you!!!

Lisa Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 04:23 AM EST

I was watching the Golden Girls on TV when I read the news online. I feel like a part of my childhood has gone. Estelle, you were the best. I'm going to miss you and your wit. Love ya!

etm Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 03:10 AM EST

I have to correct myself. It was Blanche who said "Sophia, we're innocent," in the jailhouse scene, instead of Dorothy. Sorry to be so nitpicky, but I'm a completist. Goes to show what a huge fan I am of the show. I went back to the DVD because I suspected, after the fact, that I got it wrong. I figured someone out there would point out my mistake, so I wanted to correct it myself.

S. Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:47 AM EST

She was a truely amazing entertainer, no matter how many times I watch The Golden Girls (I own all seasons) it still makes me giggle like it's my first time watching, we'll miss you Estelle.

etm Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 01:50 AM EST

She was the best. I love that show and I especially love Sophia. Estelle, you'll be missed and loved forever. We'll always be quoting your best lines, some of which are legendary. One of my favorites was from this trenchant exchange:

Dorothy (in jail on prostitution charges): "Ma, we're innocent!"

Sophia: "I know that--I can't believe these dumb cops would think anyone would pay money to sleep with you."

Classic Sophia Petrillo!

Keep Laughing Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 01:43 AM EST

Thank you, Estelle, for sharing your laughter with the world. Below is a favorite of mine...

Sophia: I found my lucky handkerchief.
Rose:Where was it?
Sophia: It was in my bra.
Rose: What was it doing in your bra?
Sophia: I was blowing my breasts, Rose!

sophia rocks Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 01:37 AM EST

GERRI JOHNSON Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 01:10 AM EST

My husband and I were very sad to hear that Estelle died today. We have both been watching the Golden Girls since we were kids and now that we are older it is just so good to watch good wholesome shows like this one. Estelle will be missed and we always loved watching her and how funny she was and always will be in our hearts and minds. God Bless her family to have had her all these years. May God Bless you during this time of such a loss.

Matt Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:08 AM EST

I didn't expect to get so emotional about Estelle's death but after reading all the posts and comments, and all the great things people have written about her, I find myself very choked up. Thank you so much for giving us years and years of laughter, and I'm so glad that the show is still constantly being played so now many many more can view and watch the comic genius that is Estelle Getty. You will truly be missed, America's Golden Girl.

Thank you for all the wonderful memories over the years, and for being apart of the last true great Saturday Night television line-up. As someone who has a grandmother living with dementia, my condolences & admiration go out to your family, but they know you are now at peace.

Watching the Golden Girls all these years is like watching myself grow to a middle aged grouch. These were four amazing women that proved growing old gracefully is a plus not a punchment. Estel is like loosing a friend and one whom will be miss by everyone even those of us who are teachers and not stars. I would like to say Thanks for the memories, for blue cross and blue sheilds , for a hip that finally healed we Thank You so much.

God Bless her family and our family prayers are with each of you.

The Golden Girls is one of the all time great T.V. shows. One of my favorite exchanges is the hurricane episode, where Sofia is all "There's a hurricane a cum'in." Dorothy: "A cum'in?" Much love and thanks for all the laughs. I grew up with the Girls and to this day I can't help but smile when I hear "thank you for being a friend...."

Estelle was my favorite golden girl! I loved her, you'll be missed Estelle!

Thank you for being a friend...

Dorothy and Sophia playing Scabble and Sophia makes up a word to play and they argue about it. Dorothy tells Sophia to use "disdam" in a word. To which Sophia replies, "You don't know how to play disdam game."

My mother and I say that quote to each other at least once every Scrabble game we play. We'll both miss her. RIP, Estelle.

Brent Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 09:17 PM EST

Dorothy is leaving for an extended weekend with her new beau:

Dorothy shuts the door and Sophia throws her self up against it. With glee to Blanche:

"Fasten your seat belt, slut puppy...this will be a ride you never forget"

One more..

Dorothy "Ma, I don't want to have to have you declared incompetent."

Sophia: "I'm not incompetent...Once when I laughed too hard, a little pee came out.."

Ms. Getty- words can't describe how much joy you brought to our lives. Thank you for your honesty in portraying Sofia with dignity.

Losing "Sophia" is like losing a family member. There's always feelings of sadness when someone passes but I actually cried when I heard about her death. The Golden Girls are a part of my daily life.

my dad always think you're the funniest one of the Golden Girls.. and I couldn't agree more... you'll be missed....

Taylor Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:52 PM EST

I used to get in trouble in school for quoting the Golden Girls. I, like many others, love the show even more now. Nothing is funnier to me than the banter between tiny little Sophia and her giant daughter Dorothy. Thank you Estelle for making our lives a little sweeter.

arryana Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:52 PM EST

comedy like this doesn't come around too often:

Blanche: Rose, you shot my vase!
Rose: I didn't shoot Lester.
Blanche: I'd rather you shot Lester!
Sophia: I manage to live 80, 81 years. I've had pneumonia, two operations, a stroke. One morning I'll belch and Stable Mable here will blow my head off.

JDumas Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:50 PM EST

Estelle's first tv role was as Barry Manilow's mother in his tv movie 'Copacobana' She always was the very best part of Golden Girls.

Tara Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

My heart breaks today as I say goodbye to Estelle Getty. There is not a day that goes by that I don't watch The Golde Girls. I feel like I am visiting with dear friends who have seen me at my best and my worst. My daughter loved it too when she was born and for her first birthday we threw a huge Golden Girls party. It was too much fun. I have been cracking up at everyone's quotes so I will leave you with one of my favorite Sophia lines "Jealousy is an ugly thing Dorothy, and so are you in anything backless".
I love my girls, and tonight when I watch them, it will be with a heavy heart and teary eyes. Thanks for the memories, the laughs and the joy.

chris Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

Loved Estelle. She gave life and vibrancy to a timeless sitcom character. I hope she -- and the other actresses, plus the writers, directors and staff, and the folks at Lifetime -- know how much their show means. Just that guaranteed laugh at night.

Jackie N Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

TO HER FAMILY THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH WORDS TO EXPRESS OUR DEEPEST SORROW IN THE LOSE OF SUCH A LOVELY AND HARD WORKING LADY THAT GAVE HER ALL TO EACH PART SHE PLAYED. THE WORLD REMEMBER HER ALWAYS.

Ronda Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:12 PM EST

I will miss you golden lady, you were one of my favorites...... on the Golden Girls

Jackie Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

The world gas lost a great lady that played her part with such grace and she will be missed.

Rhonda Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

Picture it...July 22, 2008...A Legend who caused many to laugh has gone on to the Big Screen....we will miss you, Sophia....and rest assured your Memory will carry us through. Until we meet again, Ma!

Heidi Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

I've been watching The Golden Girls since the beginning. I still watch every morning in reruns. I've found ways to integrate Sophia's best lines in my day to day interactions. My daughter's friend once said my "family favorite" homemade lasagne tasted like Chef Boyardee. (which was meant to be a compliment as when Rose said it to Sophia about her homemade sauce.) My response of course was the same response Rose got... to "hand the kid a knife and tell him to stab me with it, it would hurt less!" Thank you Estelle for enriching my life, making me laugh, and for sharing your talent with the world. You will be missed. Rest in Peace.

Debra Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

What a wonderful actress! As I watched her as Sophia, I decided THAT IS WHO I WANT TO BE...she will be missed deeply...what a gal!

mike Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

Its hard to explain, but the Golden Girls had me at hello. There is something about seeing a "family" cobbled together from a want ad in a super market that makes me feel that no matter what, I don't have to die (or live) alone. Estelle did what most actors never want to do, play a character significantly older. She did it run from it, she embraced it and made it her own. She will be missed, but she will also live on. Thanks for the laughs!

Amy Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

One of THE funniest "Golden Girls" moments EVER...

[the girls are sick. Sophia tells a story]
Sophia: In Sicily, we never went to the doctor. We went to the Widow Caravelli. Whatever you had, she had a cure. She was most famous for her green salve to cure ear infections. One day, she gave some to Salvadore, the village idiot. He misunderstood the directions and put in on his linguine instead of in his ear.
Dorothy: Well, I guess if you're an idiot with a hearing problem, you do things like that.
Sophia: Actually, it turned out ok. The stuff tasted great, so Salvadore decided to market it. At first, things didn't go so well. Linguine with ear salve wasn't very appetizing-but once he changed the name to pesto sauce, it sold like hot cakes!
Dorothy: Ma, you're making this up!
Sophia: So what? I'm old, I'm supposed to be colorful.

We'll miss you, Ms. Getty. You made it look so easy. Thank you, thank you, thank you and rest in peace.

Kymmy Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:43 PM EST

Just like many others, The Golden Girls have been a major part of my life for the past 20 years. I started watching it as a young girl before I even fully understood the subject material, and now as an adult it's even funnier. I am so saddened by the loss of Estelle, but she left us with an unforgettable character, and in that way she will always be with us. RIP Estelle.
Sophia: "What a tragedy. Hemingway ran out of stories to write and killed himself. But this one...just keeps going and going!"

Juan and Terry Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

The Golden Girls have become an essential part of who we are. We are saddened by the news of Estelle's passing but we are happy she is finally at peace.
Tonight it will be a bittersweet celebration of her magic....with a little cheesecake on the side.
Love you Ma!

Dorothy: What's that smell?
Sophia: I don't smell anything.
Dorothy: Are you wearing something?
Sophia: A little Ben-Gay on my knees.
Dorothy: Oh.
Sophia: A little Vicks on my chest.
[long pause]
Sophia: A little Deep Heat on my neck.
Dorothy: What are you trying to do, pickle yourself so you'll live to be 100?
[Dorothy starts tossing and turning]
Sophia: Keep it up, I'll get a Dramamine.

Cathy Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

I love this show....reruns and all

Steven W. Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:39 PM EST

Estelle Getty (Sofia) the name alone makes me laugh and feel so very good. I can never get tired of the "Golden Girls" reruns because of you and your co-actresses. I am fortunate to have you on re-runs in my livingroom.
Even though you played a fiesty and strong character, inside you had a big heart, a loving soul and was a very caring person.
I will miss you but know that you are up there making everyone laugh.
God bless your sons and family for letting them share you their loving mom with the rest of us.

Lee Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

She made me laugh. She was so funny. She was a wonderful person and made a name for herself in this world. God Bless Her. Thank you for being a friend..........

Texan Fan Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:15 PM EST

I grew up watching the Golden Girls and to this day when life gets hard I can always turn to that show for comfort. The character of Sofia was like my mother. She had a tough shell but a soft soul. She will be missed greatly and I feel that the world has lost a kind soul. She will live on in reruns and I hope my children can enjoy her memory like I have. The show taught us that no matter the age that friends and family are the greatest treasure you can have in your life.

A fellow Sicilian Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

This is a tremendous loss. There is not a day that goes by that I do not watch an episode or two from my DVD collection. My heart is with Ms. Getty's family and her beloved co-stars. Thank you for bringing so much laughter to my life! You are loved and will be missed deeply.

Gord Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

It is a very sad lost for anyone whom loves to laugh. This beautiful woman showed me how to laugh even in the darkest of times. Ms. Getty I hope your in a place of peace. My heart goes out to your family and friends. Thank you for all the joy over the years.

angela Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

I know I won't be the only one eating cheesecake watching my Golden Girls DVD's tonight. The show stands up to repeated viewings, as cliche as it sounds I really feel like I'm visiting with old friends every time I watch. The show didn't rely on plot or action so much as these 4 ladies' talent in story telling. They went from Georgia to Brooklyn to Minnesota to Sicily and back again at that kitchen table. No matter how many times I hear, "Picture it: Sicily" Estelle always delivers and makes me laugh again and again.

I learned about ageism, lesbianism, euthanasia, illegal immigration, chronic fatigue, senility, artificial insemination and not to mention Blanche's varied sexual proclivities - before age 11 from the Girls. This show really is special, it transcends its medium and is something else altogether. It makes me hopeful about growing old. Each of these ladies is a gem, but Estelle stole the show from all of them. She will be missed dearly. Her spirit is an inspiration.

To Estelle Getty--You truly were more than just a Golden Girl, you were one classy broad who was simply pure titanium! You blessed us with your comedy and your vibrant spirit. Keep em laughing in heaven!

Susan Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

I'm proud to say I also "grew up Golden Girls", as another commenter aptly put it. Every Saturday night of this show's run during my young (at the time) life revolved around my being able to drop everything and watch my four favorite women. Now that they are re-run on Lifetime, I catch them whenever I can.

Estelle, God Bless You and Keep You. Thank you for all the laughs you continue to give us; you will continue to live on in our awe of you.

To Estelle's Family, Friends, and Colleagues, my sincerest sympathies go out to you. Hopefully, you can find comfort in knowing that your loss is also the world's loss. We mourn with you.

Nee Nee Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

I am really sad about this. Sophia was, by far, the best character on GG, and one of the best TV characters ever! I was so sad when I read about her death that I nearly cried. Then I read through all of the terrific lines everyone has posted, and started laughing. Classic! What makes each line funny is picturing Estelle say them.

Cory Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

This is like a double loss for me, because Sophia and my grandmother were the same people, more or less. Both were little Sicilian women, both had a penchant for romance and scandal, and both said whatever they wanted to. Watching Estelle as Sophia was like watching my own grandmother on TV. When my grandma died I gained some comfort watching Sophia, and it felt a little like my grandma was still alive, in a way. Sophia (and Estelle, obviously) helped me get through a tough time in my life, and for that I am very thankful. Goodbye, Estelle.

Barbara Barrera Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Betty, Bea, & Rue I send my deepest condolences on the passing of Estelle Getty. Please know that she is in a better place now, where there is no pain, no suffering and where all the angel are one.

God Bless you Estelle.

picture it: south texas in the 90s. a dorky, awkward, fat kid has no outlet for her feelings. she watches lifetime everyday before school and on the weekends to catch the golden girls and is inspired to act. she eventually ends up going to a prestigious college to study acting...that young girl was me.

thanks for the memories, estelle. you are the golden girl i want to be when i'm 80. RIP

Kathleen Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 05:35 PM EST

Love Estelle Getty, she'll be missed greatly!

Belle Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Okay, so I'm reading the tributes to Estelle and Joe you just made me laugh aloud!!

Sophia: I can't believe it. Esther Weinstock is dead.
Dorothy: Oh, I'm so sorry, Ma. How'd it happen?
Sophia: She was fighting an oil rig fire in the Gulf of Mexico - SHE WAS 88!

I remember Intimate Portraits was doing a segment on her and Harvey Fierstein said someone in Torch Song developed HIV, she would bring in her chicken noodle soup everyday to make him feel better. She was one of the first in the entertainment business to not only acknowledge HIV but be compassionate towards the people who have it without judgement and with love.

Bethann Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

Growing up, "Golden Girls" was the Saturday night staple in our house. I still remember the 1st episode when Sophia said, "I'm like clockwork. Every morning at 7:00, I pee. Unfortunately I don't get up until 8:00" I thought it was so funny when I was 9 and I still laugh every time I see the reruns. I know Estelle was very sick for many, many years and although she will be greatly missed, she is in a much better place now.

Judy D Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

Belle Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Picture it, Brooklyn 1957 (or in my case Boston 1980s) Saturday night. Love the Golden Girls when it first aired and still do. When I'm out sick or take a day off during the week, my mornings are 9am-10am with Sophia, Dorothy, Rose & Blanche. When I can not fall asleep at night, 1am-2am they are on my television set. Estelle was a Golden Girl on television and off. 3 Cheers to Estelle!! Or as Dorothy would say Maaaaaaa.

Karrah Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

I never get tired of old GG reruns on Lifetime. Sophia was the heart and soul of that show. I am truly saddened.

"Jean's a nice girl. She happens to like girls instead of guys. Some people like cats instead of dogs. Frankly, I'd rather live with a lesbian than a cat!"

Rose: Sophia, why are you in such a bad mood?
Sophia: Excuse me Rose, but I haven't had sex in fifteen years and its starting to get on my nerves.

One of the best TV characters and one of the funniest shows, I watch at 8 am before I go to work. My favorite Sophia moment is the Sonny Bono and Cher scene and my favorite line, "I said it before and I'll say it again, sluts just heal faster."

One of the reasons why I loved watching Golden Girls was the relationship that everyone had with Sophia. She was everyone's mom.

Sophia: I know. I should've taped them back when you were seven.
Estelle you will be missed!

Hearing this news made me so sad. And then I came here and saw everyone posting their fave Sophia quotes. It's made me feel better.
