'Nashville Star' recap: Patricia Heaton and Sinbad watch this show?

Nashvillestar_l Last night's Nashville Star saw the final four return to their hometowns to put on a concert, be treated like a rock star, and if you're Coffey, to meet fans Patricia Heaton and Sinbad. Heaton said she's been watching him every week; Sinbad insisted that he's been voting. (How hard did NBC have to work to find out that Sinbad was a Coffey fan?) Our thoughts go out to those celebs this morning because their pick got the boot. Let's break the performances down.

Shawn Mayer
At the risk of appearing as transparent as John Rich, who once again gave Melissa Lawson a standing ovation, I totally voted for Shawn last night. Twice. But for once, John and I agreed on Shawn: At the beginning of the competition, we never would have told her to do a Gretchen Wilson song. But she made "Here for the Party" her own. She sounded great. She worked the stage like a pro. She peaked at the right time. The Top 3 got to perform a second song, and she did Garth Brooks' "The Dance." It wasn't her best vocal — Jeffrey Steele made sure we knew she was dealing with a bad wisdom tooth — but it was another ballsy choice. You might think of Shawn as mini-Gretchen, but she'll keep you on your toes. (She's taken on George Jones and Randy Travis this season as well.) I want to see what a producer can do with her when he gets her in the studio and she has her own songs to sing.

After the jump, Gabe Garcia, Coffey, and Melissa Lawson.

Gabe Garcia Gabe ended up in the bottom two with Coffey, presumably because his nerves kept him from connecting with the audience last week. He continues to improve (to about 90 percent comfortable), but I found him a little shaky on his first song, Alan Jackson's "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere." (Jeffrey made sure we knew Gabe had a cold.) His second song was Kenny Chesney's "Living in Fast Forward," which was a good choice in that it gave him a chance to get the crowd clapping, but a bad one in that Gabe is no Kenny. I do not believe that Gabe is a hillbilly rock star out of control. I do, however, believe John when he says that Gabe will get a record deal whether or not he wins the show. John can't be the only one looking for the artist who can represent the Hispanic market.

Melissa Lawson Melissa has an amazing voice, but "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" sounds like a karaoke song now even when Pat Benatar sings it. Am I wrong? While Jeffrey noted that the rest of the competition is creeping up on her, John unabashedly pimped for her as usual: air-guitaring during the song and floating her a question that she could hit out of the park after it. (She wants to be the next Nashville Star more than anything because it will not only change her life, but the lives of her five sons, who, okay, were pretty adorable toasting with soda in the limo during her hometown visit). My issue with Melissa can be summed up in the selection of her second song, Carrie Underwood's "Jesus Take the Wheel." She's just so predictable. Like Jeffrey, I don't want to hear her build to the big ending in every song. Truth be told: I think Melissa is the only one in the final three ready to perform at the Olympics (a perk for being on NBC) and to headline the tour that all four finalists will be on this fall. But is she ready to make an album that feels necessary in a world where Martina McBride and Trisha Yearwood exist?

Coffey Again I ask: Am I the only one (besides Sinbad and Patricia Heaton) who actually likes his voice? The judges kept saying it was his charisma that kept him on the show this long. Let's give the man some credit — he's not Sanjaya. He can sing. (He can also sweat.) I liked his rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama." That's another karaoke song at this point, but his runs made it somewhat fresh. That's why I like him: Shawn is a mini-Gretchen. Melissa is a mini-Martina. Gabe is a mini-George Strait. Who is Coffey? Even if you can say a mini-someone, that someone isn't going to be from the country genre — which makes his sound unique for the market if you get him to sing a country song. I don't think unique is a bad thing. Then again, I'm not trying to sell records.

Who will be the next Nashville Star? And from which of the final four would you buy an album?

linda bruno Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

To John: Gabe was not the 1st hispanic country singer. John Arthur Martinez was 2nd place to Buddy Jewel in the 1st and best Nashville Star. And to Jeff, Miranda Lambert was not the runner up, she was 3rd. It is sad to see this show starting to turn out like all the others, it was a great show in the beginning.

CariD Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Jeffrey: Unfortunately, I was a "CariD", long before the Top Model winner was born, but your question gave me a good chuckle. As for female singers...I kind of have widely diverging tastes...in country music I like Trisha Yearwood and Nanci Griffith, in "other" music I can't say I have a favorite but looking at the "old collection here", I see Bette Midler, Bonnie Tyler, and Loreena McKennit. I know I'm odd. But thanks for the Kelly Clarkson recommendation, I just might have to get "Breakaway."

Jeffrey Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:35 AM EST

CariD: if you like Kelly Clarkson, next time you're on iTunes and feel like you can afford to spend 9.99, get "Breakaway". It really will be money well-spent.

Jeffrey Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 07:34 AM EST

cariD: out of curiousity, what female singers do you like? And are you the "America's Next Top Model" winner???

CariD Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Jeffrey:Sorry...I've listened to Carrie Underwood, but I just don't like her...at all, she's one that I will definitely change the radio station or tv channel if she comes on. As for Kelly Clarkson, I like her, but not enough to purchase a CD. Thanks for the advice, though. I'm just really picky about the female singers I like. And to bring this back to this season...I'd definitely have to disagree about Melissa staying home with her kids, becky. If she wins (and I'd be happy if she or Gabe won) or if she doesn't and still gets a record deal out of the show, I think she can balance family and her career....it's been done before sucessfully, and she's trying to provide a future for her family, so I commend her.

becky Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 01:38 AM EST

Gabe should win Nashville Star hands down. Melissa should stay home with her kids for awhile. If Gabe doesn't win, there is a real problem with the show.

john Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 12:53 AM EST

I'd like to encourage folks to look for copies of Angela Hackers CD (last year's winner) - even if she didn't become a household name it's a really good CD by a wonderful singer!

Jeffrey Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 08:24 AM EST

CariD: Both of Carrie Underwood's CDs are truly excellent. You should try them out. And if you like rock-pop at all, Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" is fantastic. No, I'm not kidding. And "My December" is pretty solid too. And really, I wasn't kidding about "Breakaway". No, really.

Jeffrey Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 08:20 AM EST

(CONTINUED) Like I said, good TV (Taylor Hicks' antics, Fantasia's rags-to-riches story) doesn't necessarily make for ultimate success in the music industry. The issue, I feel, is that the country's truly gifted artists don't want their career---relatively speaking---handed to them by a television popularity contest. They want to earn it in the real world, working for the fanbase and attention. Occasionally a true Cinderella story such as Carrie Underwood's---going from a small farm somewhere having never sung in public to a multi-Grammy winner---comes out of it, because the person is gifted with an amazing voice. But so far, the record on these kinds of shows is much more often miss than hit.

Jeffrey Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

Just wanted to respond to Zakry. Did a little research on the AI winners because I was curious about your stats. Yes, Fantasia is certainly the winner amongst the four less-successful AI champs, her her debut double-platinum (2,000,000) and her self-titled album gold (500,000). And, uh, thanks, I knew she sings R&B which no, for the most part, I don't listen to. Ruben Studdard has one gold album out of his several albums. Jordin's debut is solidly between gold and platinum (857,000). Taylor Hicks is the big loser, for though he has a platinum album, his label has dropped him. Now, for the other success stories: Kelly Clarkson has sold 19 million albums. Carrie Underwood's first CD is 7x platinum (7,000,000 copies) and her current release is at 3,000,000. So, I think it is fair to say that even Fantasia's success (and certainly Jordin's) pales compared to the two of them. My point, anyhow, is that winning Idol (and NS) is not necessarily a predictor of success. (CONTINUED)

deej Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

Melissa has an absolutely wonderful voice. we totally enjoy listening to her...i believe the show is great

Zakry Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

Just wanted to chime in here for Jeffrey that Fantasia actually has a gold and platinum album to her credit. She is hardly a flop. Her music is geared more for R&B which you apparently don't listen to.

Jordin is very close to having a gold album, and has two of the biggest songs of the year ("Tattoo," "No Air", both top ten hits). I wouldn't throw in the towel on her yet.

SnapMaster Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

If I want to listen to Coffee I can just go to the zoo with a tape recorder and wave a piece of bread at the goats. Same sound.

Briznatch Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

Gabe. All the way Gabe. I really liked what I heard from Charlie in the first episode, but the judges cut him, and since then it has been Gabe or no one for me.

I'll wait in line to buy his album.

Sandy Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

This is without a doubt the worst Nashville Star seaason yet. Please God, let it get back to being as good as it once was next season. Oh, and I never, ever liked Coffey. 'Can't believe it took him this long to be long gone. I'm not excited about any of the finalists this year (for various reasons), but if I had to narrow it down to the top two, it would be between Melissa and Shaun.

Nashville Guy Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 09:06 AM EST

I liked Coffey initially, but the longer the show went on, the more I wanted him to go--all hype, no substance. He should just go back to playing praise and worship at mega-churches. I like Gabe and Shawn and think they are the most country of the remaining three. Mellisa is going to win though. The judges don't ever say anything bad about her... even when she has "pitch" issues. I have seen Gabe and Shawn play around town in Nashville, and they are much better than they seem on TV... I think the show sabotages them by making choose songs they don't really want to sing.

JV Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

I don't know what has happened to this show, but the talent is awful this year. I don't think the producers do a good job of selecting finalists for the show-there are so many more talented people in Nashville. The amazing Miranda Lambert is the only good thing to come from this show. Cancel it.

CariD Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

Actually, Miranda Lambert finished third first season, behind winner Buddy Jewell (sp?) and runner-up John Arthur Martinez. I think it's probably too early to say if Chris Young (two seasons ago winner) has "disappeared", he was nominated for a "best new artist" kind of award at one of the country award shows last year. From Idol's track record, as well as this show, it seems to me that winning isn't nearly as important as getting the exposure. I've never purchased a cd by an Idol winner, but a few by finalists, and I've only purchased one by a Nashville Star winner (Chris Young)and a couple of finalists.

Jeffrey Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 08:03 AM EST

Maybe what people are trying to say is that the Nashville Star winners always disappear. Miranda Lambert---who has not disappeared, is not miniminally talented (she has two very solid albums) and who is successful---did not win the show, she was runner-up. The winners of these talent shows are less than successful most of the time. Even Idol has a losing record: Ruben, Fantasia, Taylor, Jordin vs. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood (David Cook, even if successful, will still give Idol a losing record). This demonstrates only one thing: good TV does not necessarily made good radio/home listening.

billy Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 02:05 AM EST

This season has been the worst of all. I find myself rooting for people who in any other season would be mediocre. That said, Gabe should win.

Melody Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:02 PM EST

I have hated Coffey's whole schtick from the beginning...he's nice enough but I can't stand his voice and the karaokeness of it all. I want Gabe to win and I have already bought a cd of his that is available on his website. I would gladly purchase the one he produces when he wins next week. Shawn Mayer has improved yes and I don't really care about Melissa. I thought from the beginning Gabe was like George S. and that's a great thing!

marco Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

well..coffey deserved to stay..he brings out the best country i have heard in a long time..but thats lfe you know..

kiktback03 Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 08:12 PM EST

I'm more into the new rock music. But when I listen to Coumtry music, I like country music like Gabe does. I like real country music. Go Gabe!

thebrad Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

miranda lambert minimally talented? check again . she wrote her entire second album that just won album of the year you dolt. shes a great live performer as well so im not sure where you are getting your info from.

Okiedew Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

I have to agree that this is the worst talent of all the Nashville Stars so far and and as well as the Judges, It very well could be why these poor kids are having a bad time carrying note's is because none of their instructors can carry a note so they start off at a disadvantage, if you are going to get a country star why not have a "country" leader .This is just sad really sad.

johnb Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:40 PM EST

I've heard of Miranda Lambert plenty and she was on there.

Tamara Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 05:29 PM EST

Hopefully Gabe will win. Does George Strait strut around the stage? How many number ones does he have! Go Gabe!!!

WRC Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

Oops, my bad. For some reason, I thought she won this competition. Have any of the winners done anything significant? If not, why is this show still on and why the move to a "major" network?

MsDaisy Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

What's Taylor "can't sing my way out of a paper bag" Swift got to do with Nashville Star? You may have her confused with another minimally talented blonde chick, Miranda Lambert (who by the way, did not win either).

mommajo Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

ivoted for Melissa for the next country star.....wish her lots of luck

CariD Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

From which of the final four would I buy an album?....definitely not Shawn, I very rarely buy anything from a female singer and there's nothing about her that would make me change that...maybe Coffey, if only to hear what he sounds like without all the "charisma" stuff...maybe Melissa, I like her as a person and I like her power...more likely Gabe, I like the "I am what I am...George Straight-ness" of his personality and stage demeanor and I like his voice...but every time they talk about him and "the Hispanic market", I get out my CD from first season runner-up John Arthur Martinez....his original stuff is amazing and his cover of "Amarillo by Morning" with parts sung in Spanish is fantastic.

Steve James Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

I had the oppertunity to meet Shawn Mayer while visiting Nashville in April. She is a class act. I was glad to see Coffey get booted.

WRC Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

Ever heard of Taylor Swift?

MsDaisy Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

It doesn't matter who wins...we'll never hear from them again. Remember Brad Cotter or Angela Hacker? How about Erica Jo? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Jeffrey Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

Not sure about the reviewer's taste. Coffey is not a good singer. He sounded like a goat on his runs in the final episode---like Stevie Nicks on "South Park". It's true that his charisma carried him---and also sad, because to me he has very little of that either. And, I wouldn't describe Shawn as a mini-Gretchen Wilson just because she sang one Gretchen song. She's done material this season that wouldn't fit GW. I voted for Shawn because Gabe doesn't need my help---he has a totally classic country voice that will snag a contract, even if he is totally boring. And Melissa sings the kind of mainstream not-quite-country country that I'm not a fan of. Shawn is the one who could fit into modern country, which is the kind I favor. Thankfully there's only one ep left, but who wants to be strung along for an hour to find out which one of these three wins???

cj pargeon Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

i think coffey was time to go he remindme of two years ago of jason weaver more the gospel voice for him and shawn ok but to much gabe is the favoirte to win but the winner is mark my words when i sey this is melissa

NanFan Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

Hurray for Shawn! I had this on dvr and when she was the first to sing,
I started voting for her. I realized she must have been put thru to the finals when my votes where being counted. I voted for her thru the whole hour. She will sell alot of records even if she doesn't win Nasville Star.

Tim Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

Based on last night alone, I would say Shawn deserves it. She improved drastically since leaving John in the dust. Overall, the talent on this season has been poor. I remember seasons where I felt the Nashville Star final 4 was better than the American Idol final 4. Not this year. As far as radio goes, I think Gabe would probably be the most radio-friendly based on current country radio. Melissa has the best voice, but, outside of Carrie, the belting females like Martina, Trisha, Faith, Sara, etc., haven't been getting the big airplay lately. I thought the two girl groups (Laura & Sophie, Pearl Heart) had potential. I would've liked to have seen Pearl Heart advance because they were improving every week. I think Laura & Sophie, though very talented, would have been a huge distraction on tour with their immaturity, but I look forward to hearing from them again in 3-5 years.

Belia Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 11:08 AM EST

Gabe did awesome..His is pure country.I would buy Gabe's music..Gabe Garcia our next Nashville Star....

Angry Quinn Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

Who gets my vote? NONE of them. I could not care less about any of the finalists (and this includes everyone in the top 12). Nashville Star was better when it was on USA.

Jess Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

As a huge country fan, I would not buy any of their records. I was glad to see Coffey go. He's not country. Period. I think each of the remaining contestants have a LONG way to go before they can make it in country music. Totally agree with Mandy--I don't think Melissa is good enough to hang with the great voices of country music such as Martina and Trisha Yearwood (two of my all-time fave voices)and she certainly should not have tried to sing a Carrie Underwood song. All in all, extremely disappointed with this season of Nashville Star... if you aren't a country music fan, this show is NOT what it's about...

Michelle Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:12 AM EST

Coffey has always reminded me of Hootie (Darius Rucker), without the golf clubs. He has a pleasant-enough voice, and I'm sure he'll find success, especially after the tour. As for the Top 3, I think they all deserve to win, but it will probably be Melissa.

TV Fan Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

I enjoyed the nuanced performance of Shawn's second song last night. I think Melissa has better vocals but think Shawn is a strong contender to take the title from her based on her second song and last week's original song -- I like when she sings softly and with restraint, it gives her hard edge a very nice softness that I think is very country commercial. Gabe wasn't very good last night.

TV Fan Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

And Coffey, one more thing: NICE SWEAT PITS! That was just disgusting. Keep your arms down!

TV Fan Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

And "Coffey", whether it's his stage name or real name, is just awful sounding.

TV Fan Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

Coffey is not good. His runs sounds like a whining lamb and there is no power or strenght in his vocals. He didn't deserve the final four. Glad to see him go. He has a Christian album on iTunes -- that is where his heart (and voice) is, not country or even pop for that matter. He was an early stage American Idol reject. Good riddance Coffey!

b0bbyr0we Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

I've been popping in here or there this season due to the high recommendation from EW, and last night I finally caught Coffey.

He's not Sanjaya...but he can not sing.
