Bits and Bobs (Vol. 3 ½): Get 'Spaced' out next week

Categories: Bits and Bobs

If you’re an anglophile and you’ve seen Spaced, then you’re already obsessed. If you are and you haven’t, then what are you waiting for? You’ll have no excuse come Tuesday when BBC Video finally releases the entire series on DVD, which includes uber-geeky, super-amusing, very informative commentary by Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Matt Stone, Bill Hader, Patton Oswalt, Diablo Cody, and of course show creators-stars Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes, and director Edgar Wright. I know what you’re thinking:  Did they hire a bunch of famous Americans to flaunt the show, just to sell the DVD? No way -- these guys (and girl) are actually fans. Plus, there’s a great doc that, as one of my colleagues commented, “treats Spaced like it’s Citizen Kane.” To which I replied, “It’s not?”

In honor of this long-awaited release, Jessica, Simon and Edgar are embarking on a four-city tour full of special screenings, panel sessions, and signings for us fans. In addition, BBC America will be running a marathon and your very own 'Bits and Bobs' will have an interview with Simon for your pleasure on Monday morning. So, if you haven’t heard of the show (which is about two twentysomethings pretending to be a couple in order to rent a flat), enjoy this trailer. And don’t worry if my description sounds too romantic comedyish — this show has enough zombie film references to keep anyone interested. (My favorite character: the basement-dwelling artist Brian, played by the great Mark Heap, late of Green Wing, Marple, and Love Soup.) When you’re done, check out the special Spaced edition anglophile calendar after the jump.

Sunday: BBC America will air six back-to-back episodes starting at 3pm ET.
Monday: BBC America will air the entire series beginning at 3am ET, but don’t clog up your TiVo just yet — the DVDs are more than worth it. Also, come back to EW.com for Bits and Bobs interview with Simon. If you’re in or around New York, go to the special 3-episode screening event at Village East Cinemas at 7pm.  Simon, Jessica, and Edgar will be there for a Q&A with Elvis Mitchell.
Tuesday: The DVD drops! New Yorkers, get to the Union Square Virgin Megastore between 2 and 4pm for a signing event with Simon, Jessica, and Edgar.
Wednesday: Starting at 12:30pm, Simon, Jessica, and Edgar will be signing autographs at Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash West in Los Angeles.  Then head over to the Arclight Hollywood at 7pm for another screening, after which Kevin Smith will moderate a Q&A with Simon, Jessica, and Edgar.
Friday:  Comic-Con! If you’re in or near San Diego, Simon, Jessica and Edgar have a panel at 12:30 pm in Room 6A. At 10:15pm, they’ll be showing three special episodes picked by fans (go to spacedinvasion.com to vote).
Sunday: The crew will be heading to Austin for a “Spaced Numb-a-Thon”: A screening of all 14 episodes and a Q&A with Simon, Jessica, and Edgar moderation by Harry Knowles at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz.  The fun starts at 5pm!

Now get lost in Spaced!

Other Tamara, I hadn't heard that the American version got canned. That is very good news. This is the only Spaced that should ever be. My DVDs are in transit from Amazon, and I can't wait to share this show with all of my heretofore deprived friends!

Yay!!!!!!!! I can't wait. I watch it all the time online, but I still can't wait to see it on my tv screen and check out all of the awesome special features. Get off me, you bummer!!!

Already pre-ordered!

I am very happy that the American Spaced got canned, it could never compare. I know the Office worked out well, but lightning does not strike twice!

I've had the DVD's preordered ever since I heard they were going to be released. I can hardly believe they'll finally go in the mail next week! It almost makes up for the fact that I will not be able to attend Comic-Con this year and see the team in person. Almost.

SHHHH. You weren't supposed to tell anyone. Now I might have to wait if everyone else puts it at the top of their Netflix lists, like I did at the first opportunity...

Spaced is awesome--the writing is so smart and all of the characters are so endearing. My favorite scene is when the guys set out to win Marsha (Marcia?) back. Also love the Empire Strikes Back homage and all the Star Wars references.

"Right now my comic shop is holding a sale on X men comics, so I'm drawing Wolverine. He's slashing prices with his Adamantium claws"

I met Simon Pegg (briefly) at a screening he did of "Shaun of the Dead" in DC years ago and have been a die hard fan of his ever since then.

Spaced is one of the best written British comedies in a long time, and anyone who likes Pegg and Edgar Wright's crew of misfit British comic actors will love this series.

Comicbook fanboys, potheads and sci fi junkies will enjoy this series too.

I have also watched this series on Youtube, and I cannot wait to buy the DVD set next week. So sad that I can't attend any of the panels with Ed, Simon, and Jess :(

Yeah, I saw this through Youtube (since I don't have BBC America) and fell in love, not surprising given my love of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (oh and Edgar Wright) from their movies. Anyway, two of my most favorite parts of the show are when Daisy sets out to write on her typewriter and there's this dramatic music and she asks Tim how long she's been writing and he tells her that it's been like 3 minutes. I also love the party..her music selection, Brian's possibly spilling the beans about Time and Daisy. Oh I can't wait to actually watch it on a TV and not have to worry about it disappearing. :)

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I don't think I could be more excited for this DVD to finally come out. I just watched the show a few months ago (illegally on the web, I know I know, I'm terrible, but it was the only way!!) so I'm SUPER excited to see all the interviews, docs, etc etc. Even though I RARELY watch those things, I don't think I could be more excited. I've started using the "Go next door" bit in everyday life. As terrible as that sounds...
I'm literally giddy with excitement. First Dark Knight, now this, what next?
