'America's Got Talent' recap: Angry mob boos a sob story

Jul 16, 2008, 10:48 AM | by Jaya Saxena

Categories: 'America's Got Talent', Mini TV Watch, Reality TV

The battle was on this week to please what David Hasselhoff called the "toughest crowd in America's Got Talent history," and indeed, this week's audience actually did seem a little sadistic. It didn't matter if the jeers were deserved or not, the fired-up seat fillers demanded to see just about everyone get X'd.

First up was Michelle Wallace, who believed her rendition of "All By Myself" was a "gift to share with the world."  But the only mark she made was challenging the record for fastest buzz-out from Piers Morgan in show history. Okay, so maybe the audience had a reason to be vicious. I thought they'd respond similarly to Tina Turner impersonator Dorae Saunders, who threatened/promised to "lip sync and dance like you've never seen before," but I have to admit, it didn't take me long to fall in love, or at least experience pangs of jealousy, for those legs. Whatever it was, the judges felt it too, and Saunders was off to Vegas. Check out his performance below, and then, check out the rest of my recap...after the jump!

Okay, so how to describe ZOOperstars!? Breakdancers, in balloon costumes of Lego men and cockroaches, grooving to "Tootsie Roll." They were heckled a fair amount, but as my cousin and I watched this spectacle, he proclaimed it to be the greatest thing he's ever seen. I didn't really know what to think, but as long as you're backed by 69 Boyz, do whatever you want and it'll be fabulous. (Check it out for yourself, below, if you missed it.)

Anyhow, seeing how it's all been fun summer fluff until this point, I wasn't really prepared for an episode of America's Got Talent that would spur a genuine emotional response from me. But then came Donald Braswell, the ex-singer who damaged his vocal cords 11 years ago (shades of David Archuleta?), and though his doctors were convinced he would never even speak again, he was back on stage and ready to sing (and sing Josh Groban at that). You’d think the audience would be suckers for a recovery story, especially with a voice as powerful as Braswell's. But no, they booed, to the point where the judges had to turn around and shush them. And then, suddenly, they started cheering. Loudly. So either the entire audience suffers from short-term memory loss, or NBC is trying to trick us with their sneaky editing skills.

So is a lip synch act enough to win in Vegas? Can we ever get enough Sharon Osbourne reaction shots? And was the audience really booing at Braswell or just angry about being forced to listen to Josh Groban? Let's get your take in the comments section below!

michael Bernstein Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 10:22 PM EST

I are not only impressed
with donald Braswell, but also trying to reach his wife Julie who worked at Smith Barney. Thank you.

Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

You must have gotten alot of angry watchers telling you what a hugh blunder you made voting Donald Braswell off the show and keeping some of the really no talents. It seems strange to me that suddenly you found room for him. That man has a beautiful voice!

mcarlton Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

Donald Braswell has amazing talent. He not only touches your heart when he sings but he touches your soul. Why on earth did the "Judges" not see this? I got his CD and it is beautiful!!

mary zraik Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

I think Braswell was amazing. And yes I know that the audience was either payed or told what to do that knight. It is sad that americans can't see true talent. Braswell had it! I think there is some jelous people out there that are writing foolish and rued things about Braswell. Well to everyone eles that like him it is our job to vote him back in!!!!!!!

Lynne Swann Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 12:27 AM EST

I recorded last nights program, which I just finished watching. If the judges are looking for talent, why do they kick off great singers (i.e. Donald Braswell) and keep goofy characters who have people break burning bricks on their stomach??? I won't be watching his program again.

Jule E Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

Don Braswell has a huge talent. For judges to vote him off makes no sense.Does everyone know you can vote for him for the wildcard?Go to nbc.com/vote. You may vote 10 times per email addr. He deserves it - he is a gifted singer.

Jule Ellis Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 07:43 PM EST

Donald Braswell is superb! He has an outstanding voice for opera but also would be great on Broadway. He should win AGT but if he doesn't it's because he is much too classy for this show. God bless you, Donald!!

Donald is an incredible singer - and a good looking guy. Maybe too much class for AGT. Hope the right people hear him. He should get all kinds of offers out of this appearance.I want to hear him perform opera again. God Bless you, Donald. You have a great gift to share with the world.

April Hooper Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

Donald Braswell is real and his life-story is one in which life sometimes throws you curves. Donald Braswell and I both attending school in Boerne, Texas. Donald was the kid in High School who could make everyone laugh, an out-going personality, and an amazing singer. Most of us who know him remember him singing as a waiter at the Ye Kendall Inn in Boerne, Texas. He would awe the customers with his singing. Believe me- this man and is story is true!!

April Hoopre Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

Believe me- Donald Braswell is real and an awesome singer. I have the distinct privlege of attending school with Donald and his wife, Julie, in a very small town of Boerne, Texas. Donald has and always will be the best performer I know. He is an awesome person and has qualities in which most of us aspire to all our lives to attain. Congratulations Donald!

betterlate Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 08:14 PM EST

I have never ever commented in any forum at all about anything..but I saw Donald Braswell tonight and was absolutely amazed and moved. I did have to wonder about the audience.

Dave Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

I too believe it was 'produced'. To me it was easy to see. Whatever brings the ratings, right?

Blackwolfspirit Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

I think they should just stop the show and give Braswell the money. He was beyond great to awesome and that is one of my favorite songs.
I wish they would stop panning the audience and if they MUST have an audience, filter their noise out before they televise the show. I don't turn into the show to watch people acting like rude two year olds. While their at it, they could stop showing the host too. He is annoying. Think of how many acts we really could see if they just showed the acts and the judges comments.

CK Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 02:55 AM EST

HEY! Whats wrong with Josh Groban??? HUH???

rob m Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

I think Donald Braswell was great regarless of his story which he did not play up to the audience.his voice was just magnificent and thats all that counts I will watch show only to vote and root him on it talent right!!!

kat-e-did Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

Zooperstars have performed in Philadelphia at Phillies games. They are the most entertaining, funniest things I've ever seen. I was surprised to see that they were on AGT. LOVE 'EM!!!

Jim Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

For the record, I cannot STAND how often the camera cuts away from the act to get a crowd or judge reaction. It is unbelievably distracting.

Lloyd Voigt Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:50 AM EST

Donald Braswell is the MAN! He was by far the most "talented" person I have ever seen on your program. If he doesn't win a million $ with that voice... I will have to think this contest is rigged. God Bless you Donald and your family.

Me Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 07:12 AM EST

I really am not interested in the back story. I wouldn't pay to see Braswell. He did perform on stage (go to his site). And I think the rather beefy opera singer/blubberer was better.

Joy Ciolino Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 12:05 AM EST

I think the Tina Turner Lip Sync act was very entertaining. It goes to show that the new Puttin' on the Hits tv series coming out will be a hit all over again.

Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 11:03 PM EST

I am so proud of Mr.Braswell for the strength it took to get back on that stage and he has more courage and character in his little finger by standing and finishing his song when all he was getting was ''abuse'' from that audience and also of those 3 judges who did nothing to stop the stupidity. I will be only watching the show to VOTE for him!!! I watched the other seasons but when this one is over never again.

iwannalikeit Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

this is the kind of show you want to like..fluffy, mindless summer entertainment...but for some reason the producers have given us a hateful wayyyyy too loud audience that is either coached or really feels empowered. I agree also that the editing is horrible..and that kind of creepy look the HOFF gets when nice looking women are on stage is unsettling. But mainly, it is just sloppy. Come on NBC at least try and make this show watcheable!!!

Janet Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 10:17 PM EST

My take on this was that the audience was coached to react...they almost UNIVERSALLY booed a guy who had a good (really great) voice...then SUDDENLY...for no apparent reason...THEY'RE CAPTIVATED!! reviewing it a few times, they seemed complicit (sly asides, wide smiles)...we've been had! He has a nice voice, so no harm, but really...do they think we're IDIOTS???

Linda Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 09:54 PM EST

For the cynics. I was lucky enough to meet Don Braswell about 10 years ago. He came into our agency to be represented as an actor in our local town. He talked about his Opera career and how he had to give it up because of his accident. He loved performming, so at least he was speaking again and with acting, at least he could perform again. Throughout the years, he would walk in to our office belting out a tiny bit of a song with that wonderful voice. He was trying to regain his singing voice slowly. SO YES THE STORY IS TRUE. He never said this was the first time performing. He said this is first time I have been on stage since the accident. There is a difference. He has reformed his voice. He has sung at his daughter's schools and at church. And through some weird way, some man that happen to walk into the car dealership where he worked was able to convince him to record a CD. Don finally deserves his break.

Craig Falk Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 08:44 PM EST

I may be stupid, goofy, or just easily entertained but I think NBC's AGT is a great show. The only change I would like to see is a return to the two hour format! I,ve enjoyed enough comedy, drama, network programming, movies, society, politics, religion, & corporate PR to enable me to really like this show. I think it's fun. Oh ya, fun. I think variety talent shows should be fun; that's entertainment. It seems to me that it's just simply intended to be enjoyable entertainment, but in order to be entertained one usually needs to relax. Now I may be really crazy but I think Jerry's cool too!! Just relax and enjoy Jerry. He's alright! Possibly we can all approach the show like this: We all have our likes and dislikes and our own set of values - If you dont like the show simply change the station. As for me, I plan to tune in. In fact, I'd like to be able to tune in for two hours. I enjoy the show and find it to be entertaining.

Smoochiecyn123@aol.com Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 07:26 PM EST

My 2 cents. Hasselhoff lives on another, dumber planet. No one said pros can't be on the show. I think the complaint is the phony stuff (audience, 1st time singing since the accident, blah, blah, blah). Let people see for themselves. Backstory is really not relevant. I only caught a few acts. This show is not for me.

giulio Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

The first time I heard a story similar to this was around 1968 from a guy hanging out in the billiard room at a bowling alley. He said he was the lead singer for the Cascades, but had a car accident and injured his vocal chords just before they released their (I believe one and only) hit Rhythm Of The Rain. I was skeptical. Hearing the same story from this guy made me wonder if it's some kind of obscure con. Combined with the obviously staged audience reaction, it makes me wonder if the whole thing wasn't a scam. Is he for real?

Cynthia Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

I am just as disgusted with some of the comments here as I was last night with the booing a wonderful talent. Don didn't try to get sympathy that was the press. He downplayed his accident really by just stating it was a freak accident. By no stretch of the imagination should you blame him for what the press is doing. It took guts to stand there and take the abuse. The truth is that without a shred of doubt Mr. Braswell has one of the most amazing voices in the world. Quit judging the man because of the press. Can't you all realize what the press does to movie stars and entertainers with the blow publicity. From my understanding this man never asked for any of it. He just wants his dream back and I pray he gets it because he deserves it not out of pity but out of true talent and the obvious love he has for what he does. He has a God given gift and we are lucky he is sharing it with us.

Linda D Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

Braswell was wonderful. The audiance has to go. It is such a turn off that I go into the other room and not watch while my mother has it on.It's not only annoying how they boo even before a sound comes out, but they are so rude and obnoxious. It used to be one of my favorite shows, not any more. Smarten up and lose the audiance before it to late.

Linda D Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

DanOregon Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 06:15 PM EST

I used to tape this show, but realizing they save the one decent act for the last slot, I only watch that.
This show is no I Survived a Japanese Game Show.
MAJIDE!!!!

Joe D. Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

I think the producers are faking the audience reaction for effect. And it's really getting annoying. But, after all, Springer is the host. So what should we expect?

Stan The Man Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

The only distinctive aspect of Braswell's performance from past show are he wasn't fat, black and didn't cry. They have brought formulaic programming to a new low. Do youself a favor and watch Wipeout on ABC instead.

Melinda65 Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

If we're going to debate pros vs. amateurs, how about the fact that the Pendragons made it through? They've performed for presidential galas, and have appeared or starred in several TV specials. Or the Duttons from last year, who perform in Branson. Pros or semi-pros haven't been banned from the show; it would be nice, however, for the true status of the contestants to be revealed, IMO.

Alexa Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

"being paid to perform (as he has been) does make you a pro" (about Don Braswell)

This is true, but he is not the only act to have been paid for his talent. Many others said that they are professional dancers, singers, or impersonators. Heck, last year, one of the finalists was a singer on cruiseships. I don't think the show makes any claims that these are amateurs.

Mary Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

I strongly suspect that the undeserved booing on last night's show is another tasteless gimmick added to the show through the influence of Jerry Springer. I don't watch his show and will not be watching yours in the future if this idiocracy continues. Send Jerry home!

Mike Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Hasselbore is a homophobe. Useless. Boring. Drunk.

Japhichi Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

if you do not like the show, change your channel, as there are other shows you can watch. i love the show i think it is very entertaining..

lisa Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

i went to juliard at the same time as don, and he is a trained operatic tenor. his voice was beautiful, and is beautiful again.

professionals are absolutely allowed to audition for agt...look at terry fator, last year's winner. he's been a professional entertainer for years...just not on a large scale. one of the singers who is going to vegas is a professional wedding singer.
i am a professional singer, singing backup for several singers...this is what i do to earn my living.

give the guy a chance. you don't have to like him, you don't have to like his voice, you don't have to think he's talented.

oh, and as far as his injury? it was soft tissue injury...a crushing injury, not a break in a bone. think about those of us who have had soft tissue injuries...backs, necks, knees, how long has it taken us to recover.

back down folks, and enjoy the show.

Melinda65 Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Whether it's deserved or not, I find the booing and yelling by the AGT audience to be rude, childish and uncalled-for. I hate that they're seemingly encouraged to be as unruly and vocal as they can. Also, I think that the judges should be required to let each act perform for at least 30 seconds before "X"ing them. Not that I give their opinions much credence after they voted in the Bollywood Dancer and Leonid (twice!)

Stan The Man Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

I know most of this will be rehash but who is the director of this show? This is by far the worst camera work I've ever seen. At least So You Think You Can Dance? is finally getting it as far as focusing on the talent. As for Jerry Springer being "cute", he has got to be the most annoying, totally worthless person on this show. In the wings, wringing his hands like someone's demented grandmother. This is just as bad as the way NBC has overproduced "Nashville Star" with go-go dancers, pop songs and terrible singers.

Debs Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

Has this show turned into "Queen for a Day"?

Sunny Day Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

I want to let you know my cancer is the truth. Also that I am doing the things necessary to support my family since I can't be a super model.

to LD Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

Again, his bio begs to differ. This is not his first time back performing. Not all jobs pay well. If you need more $ get an education and a real job. Again, if you really think they were booing like that, I feel bad for you. This was a discussion about the fake audience and the fake (to some degree) sob story. I'm done. I have to go to work! Can I have a million instead?

LD Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Yes I am a realtor, I do work very hard & never said you didn't. I don't ever watch this show, and if Springer has anything to do with it then yes the audience is going to be a Springer-type audience. We only watched it because we heard Don was on it. I don't care who you are or if you are prepared for it or not, to put yourself on display on national TV and be booed would be humiliating to anyone whether the audience is being fake or not. Pro? Maybe, being he performs locally with others getting paid very minimally. All of the stuff on his bio from his European success was before the accident. You want truth? Since his accident this is the 1st professional stage he has performed on that offers any kind of real exposure, and that's worth something. Making a living as a singer does not pay much for most. Even on a national stage it's hard to earn big bucks in the music business & stay there. I just wanted to let you & others know his story is the truth, you would do the same.

Thetru7h Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

They are Americans what to you expect?

Sunny Day Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

LD: I would love to be a super model but I had a skin cancer which required removal of my scalp so now I have to wear a wig and can't model. That and I guess I am not pretty enough. I can't live out my dream. So I guess an education and a real job was the route I (and most others)was destined for.

to LD Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

Hello. I also work hard to support my kids. What's your point? Do you work hard? He is not undiscovered just, not as discovered as he would like to be.

to LD Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

It is my right to give an opinion. And yes dear, being paid to perform (as he has been) does make you a pro. By the way, if you think that booing was real, then not only are you silly, but your beef should be with that poorly behaved crowd and not with me. And his story can not be "teue" since his own website said he has been performing but last night he said it was his first time back. Sorry if I like honesty with my sob stories.

SLB Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

ZOOperstars has got to be the best thing i've ever seen on this show.

LD Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

This is a comment to CG... I know Don personlly he used to work for my father here in San Antonio & his story is a true one. He's a hard worker with talent just trying to support his wife and 3 girls. Anyone can release a album if they have talent, motivation , and a little savings to do it with... it doesn't automatically make them a pro. You don't think undiscovered talent can be found in hard working family men who spent years in recovery just trying to make a living? I commend his humilty in singing thorugh such a tough crowd and being subject to their scrutiny after all he's had to overcome to get there. This is great exposure for him to use a talent he almost lost. Don't be so critical.

Satan Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

Hasselhoff is a total waste of protoplasm

Fed-up Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

I get so frustrated watching this show because 90% of it is me watching the audience and judges. It would be so much more entertaining if they let me watch the entertainment! C'mon NBC let us see the act too instead of panning the audience and the judges!!

markman98 Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

this show has been awful this season--a few legitimate acts sandwiched between unruly crowds who are loud and rude. The editing is terrible--the sound quality varies weekly--does nbc have their B team on this?

CG Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:12 PM EST

If you read Braswells bio you will see that not only has he been performing (unlike his claim last night) but he also has a recently released album. I thought this show was for undiscovered talent, not people who are pro's but aren't good enough to be stars. I would never vote for this Jackalope.

to Marlene Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

Get real. They were out for blood the minute he opened his mouth. They couldn't have heard a note of that caterwaulling. I predicted 3 seconds into it what was going to happen. If you bought that I have a car that was used only by my elderly granny!

to to the cynics Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

Injury or not, I found him painful to listen to. He was sharp all the way through. Deserves to go to Vegas? Why? There are plent of better singers out there and some were on this show. Like the fairie lady and the man with the high voice. Both much better. Like the girl who kicks her dad in the groin "deserves" it. No wonder our country is in such bad shape. Low standards.

to the cynics Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

He did have a small scar, regardless, there is scar revision surgery and it could have been mainly internal laser surgery, lots of options. I have been in 2 major car accidents myself, and have had scar revision surgery, you can barely even see them without makeup. Scar or no scar does not prove anything about him, he has talent and deserves to go to vegas!

Marlene Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

I think for Braswell, the audience was initially reacting to the sob-story element, then realized he really did have talent. I don't think the audiences are rigged -- and I do enjoy the audience reactions this year. For one thing, it very much helps weed out people that are not capable of public performances before large audiences. It's one thing to have talent; it's quite another to be able to perform before a very large, very live, very fickle audience.

colby Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

Zooperstars!!!!

LOVE them. They perform at the local AA baseball team's homegames every year. Know that they do more than simply dance. They do all kinds of sketch-type stuff and interact with the crowd.

http://www.zooperstars.com/

Sarah Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

I hope the crowd reaction to Braswell was fake because if it wasn't, it was disgusting to watch. You know it's bad when even Jerry Springer looks disgusted by it, considering some of the crap that has been on the Jerry Springer Show.

To Gokarm Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

I think a lot of low brow black trash watches it too

Vicki Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

I have lost so much respect for this show! Last night was the worst show of manipulation I have ever seen!! I usually love watching but this was too much!! The crowd didn't even wait for the first note! It was so obvious that they were prompted and it was so FAKE! Also where was the scar from the accident! This guy lost his voice and no scar? This show has really stooped so low. If they would have just let the audience be real it would have probably been fantastic!
Anyway I do like the show but this was the stupidest thing they could have ever done! Like we the audience wouldn't figure it out?
Shame on them!!!!

CG Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

I agree gokarm. That Braswell thing was the fakest TV since Ashley Simpson on SNL. Also, I don't think he was particulary good. The sob stories are endless. Where is the scar says the cynic in me? And is there a stupider, more self important creature than Hasselhoff (not even Randy J). I'm sure I would have enjoyed those Zoo guys if only they showed them and not the judges. In general, America sure doesn't demand much if they think these folks have real talent.

Fran V Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

I agree, mrclean. I don't recall the auditions going on this long last year and certainly there weren't any repeats of cities. The addition of audience participation has made this show trashy and demeans both the audience and the performers. Unfortunate, because there are otherwise some very special moments.

gokarm Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

Clearly the show is edited for the stupidest, low-brow, white trash americans. Not that I don't reap enjoyment from some of the clips (I too loved Zooperstars), but that whole Braswell manipulation was too much for me. First the audience hates him and boo him until that modulation, and all of a sudden he "turned them around! He turned them around, it's a miracle!!" Bet me. I've never seen a show so transparently orchestrated.

mrclean Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

1. is Hasselhoff a homophobe? I suspect he is.
2. will the audition round ever end ? I mean seriously. and why do they pretend we are going back to these cities over and over again?
3. I really like how Jerry honestly seems to want people to do well. it's cute

Cajunsblues Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

The crowd was in too much of a resemblense of an episode of the Jerry Springer Show. Have to say many kudos to Braswell, if not a creative edit, for pushing on and turning the crowd around

Babs Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

I must say, I was really confused over the initial audience hostility to Braswell (if indeed it wasn't an editing trick). It was clear from the beginning that he had a good voice. Makes me wonder what had actually occurred right before he took the stage. I was expecting the judges to kind of ask the audience what the deal was, but they just focused on the final audience reaction, the cheering ovation. I tell ya, that audience gave me whiplash.
