What series did you only discover on DVD? (For me, it's 'Weeds')

Categories: DVD/Video, Television

Weeds_l I'm not going to make excuses. I could say that I was a recent college graduate and didn't have the money for Showtime, but I won't. I could say that no one ever suggested I watch it, but that would be a lie. So I come to you, PopWatchers, in the presence of my fellow pop-culture savants, to proffer this confession: I just  watched the excellent Weeds for the first time a few weeks ago. I know. I know. Where have I been? In my defense, it seems no matter how TV-savvy one is, something always falls through the cracks. And for me, that has always been premium cable shows. Much like Entourage and Sex and the City before it, I've had to rely on TV on DVD to get with the program. Now I can hardly get enough of the marijuana mama (Mary-Louise Parker, pictured), and I've been chasing it down with a helping of my other new favorite, The Tudors (hello, Henry Cavill!).

But I can't be the only one. What shows are you finally catching up with on DVD? Is Lost no longer a mystery (or at least less of a mystery)? Do you finally understand the McFuss surrounding Grey's Anatomy? I need details!

Zookeeper Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

I don't have a TV, so I discover everything online or through DVD.

Faves include:
Freaks and Geeks
Wonderfalls
Six Feet Under
Dexter
Weeds (I agree!)
Arrested Development (tops the list)
30 Rock
Big Love

Robin Sun, Jun 29, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

24 - just before the 2nd season... and we haven't missed it since.

Battlestar Galactica, which I resisted until 2 seasons were on dvd... and now I'm totally hooked.

Heroes... just finished season 1 last week. Now anxiously awaiting season 2 before 3 starts!

Trav Sat, Jun 28, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

Skins,

it's an amazingly witty and quite random British teen drama.

West Wing-
my favorite American television-renaissance show.

Britt Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

Brisco County Junior (How did I miss that??)
Started watching Bones and House last season in real time, then started tivoing them and switched to earlier seasons on DVD.
Firefly (*whimper* I miss you Mal and Jayne)
Highlander
And with my brand new Netflix subcription I spent my last weekend parked in front of the 'puter watching Weeds season one and two. Totally addictive.

Seriously... All Hail Netflix.

OH! And thanks to all of you who mentioned Sports Night. Hubby never saw it and the brilliance must not be missed. Immediately added it to my Netflix queue!

alex Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 06:36 AM EST

MI-5. The British spy show is addictive and consistently excellent, but I never knew its charms before Netflix recommended it.

Natalie Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 04:23 AM EST

Roswell...i'd seen bits and i knew i liked it, i just didn't realise i LOVED it.
Seinfeld also...too young and in the wrong country to have seen it air. One of my favourite shows now :)

Sara Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 02:45 AM EST

30 ROCK!!! I rented season 1 because I was sooooo bored over Christmas break and thought what the heck?
It's brilliant.

ary Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

Bones!
So delicious.

Meghan Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

Wonderfalls for me. It made me a big fan of Bryan Fuller's quirky storytelling style and made me develop a crush on Lee Pace. So I was thrilled to see them both reunite with Pushing Daisies last season.

kristie Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:29 PM EST

Battlestar Galactica. I am now a BSG geek. It's really scary

Jenny Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 07:16 PM EST

Glad to hear there's another Friday Night Lights convert out there. I too discovered this show on DVD along with Flight of the Conchords, Big Love, The Shield, Dexter, 24, and the Office.

Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

Dexter!

Laura Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 06:24 PM EST

Gotta agree with you on Weeds, now I'm obsessed. Also Arrested Development and 30 Rock.

Jessie Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 05:18 PM EST

Friday night lights!! I just finished the first season in less than a week and I am completely addicted. It's such an enthralling show, I'm completely in love! I just began season 2 and I'm still loving every minute!

KL Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

I watch season 1 of Lost on DVD, just before season 2 started. I became an instant fan, and waited with baited breath for season 2 to start only to be completely disappointed by it. Part of me wonders whether it had to do with watching all episodes of season 1 back to back, while the season 2 scheduling was a mess with long gaps in between that just annoyed me. Or it really could be that season 2 was a dud.

Dave Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

24. forever will be the most addicted show on DVD. I am a big fan but since 24 plays hour after hour, u will not stop. Its just so good! i did not stop for 3 weekends, me and my girl gained 10lbs because of so much chinnese and ice cream and not moving from my couch. U wont go wrong.
other discoveries Sopranos, Buffy and Prison Break but it got boring on season 2

Will Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Arrested Development, Battlestar Galactica (now caught up), and the first 3 seasons of The Wire. All are favorites now.

fibrowitch Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

The amazing space opera Muppet fantasy that is Farscape. Super hot actors, amazing costume design and almost always rocking writing.

Simon Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

I could have a Coupling marathon every weekend! The writing is so witty and the actors were amazing!

J Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

Finally watching Lost. OMG, I cannot believe how great it is! I think I need to upgrade my Netflix subscription because I can't get enough of this crazy island.

Rachel K Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

I discovered Firefly and it rocked my world!! Nathan Fillion as a space cowboy, Adam Baldwin and his love affair with guns, and Summer Glau as a crazy-assassin, seriously what more could a girl ask for?

Rachel Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

Lost- I'd always heard great things about it, but it wasn't until this year that I finally borrowed the first season from my already-addicted friend and fell in love with it. I now understand why Lost is so compelling- the characters are complex, the storylines are interesting, and there's an abundance of amazing special effects.

Dani Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

Weeds too! Six Feet Under. Lost. The Shield and Alias. TV on DVD is the BEST invention EVER!

common sensse Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

Footballers Wives was another show. But only Seasons 1-3 are on DVD in the US. I don't know whats taking so long with Seasons 4 and 5.

common sensse Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

Not counting watching seasons on the web, I caught up with Nip/Tuck on DVD before the 4th season started.

Julie Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

I first started watching Grey's Anatomy, The Office, and Sex and the City on DVD

strickens_girl Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 03:11 PM EST

Queer as Folk and Battlestar Gallactica. And I adore them both.

E Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

DEXTER!!! Love that show now. Watched all of season 1 in a weekend and dreamed about body parts and blood for days, but it was well worth it!

Lynnee Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

The Tudors
Freaks & Geeks - that one is awesome!

tex mex Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

Oh, and I forgot to mention Sports Night, only one of the BEST TV SHOWS EVER.

tex mex Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

Friday Night Lights, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, & Alias.

Matthew Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

No one's discovering THE COMEBACK on DVD? :(

What are you people waiting for? EW just named it the 79th greatest television show of the past 25 years!!

ATH Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Arrested Development..... and now I officially hate myself for not watching when it was actually on the air! also-
Veronica Mars
Entourage
The Office (BBC version)

Missy Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

Veronica Mars -- got the first two DVDs of the first season from Netflix one day, then went out and bought the first season set because I didn't want to wait on the other DVDs in the mail.

Walmart had the first and second halves of the first season of Friday Night Lights in the $5 DVD bin last fall. I bought them, thinking my sister would enjoy them (she didn't have cable, and was watching almost anything she could find online or on DVD) and for $10 I couldn't pass up a tv show I'd heard good things about. We ended up wasting away most of my weekend visiting her watching all of the episodes on the first half. I LOVE that show!!

Amelia Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

"The O.C."--I never had the urge to watch it, but after it had gone off the air, I visited a friend of mine for the weekend right after she moved into a new house. She hadn't had the cable hooked up yet, and the only DVDs she had unpacked were the first season, so I had no choice but to watch it. I got kind of addicted to it after that.

sbb3d Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

Lots of UK series: Coupling, Queer as Folk, The Office, Black Books, Vicar of Dibley...

Lots of shows canceled by Fox: Firefly, Wonderfalls, Kitchen Confidential, The Tick, Greg the Bunny...

bbc Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

Nip/Tuck, How I Met Your Mother, Sopranos. Currently wathcing Arrested Development (how did I not watch this show the 1st time around?)

trev Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

Burn Notice, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars, 4400, Psych, and next on the list is Robin Hood(BBC)

trev Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

Burn Notice, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars, 4400, Psych, and next on the list is Robin Hood(BBC)

Tinyredcar Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

I only just discovered Battlestar Galactica - holy cow, it's brilliant. I also was late to the scene of the new eps of Doctor Who - reminds of the wild, silly fun of the Doctor Whos of my childhood. I tried to get into Alias recently - didn't make it past the first episode, not sure why. I think I'll try it again.

pai Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Thank the Lord or whoever needs to be thanked for the Freaks and Geeks DVD set.

Adina Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

I discovered Veronica Mars, one of my new favorite shows. What amazing acting and writing! I just wish I had found it sooner so I could have taken part in the campaign to save the show.

BMA Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

I hated the Buffy movie, so why would I watch the show? But when I heard she was going to die at the end of Season 5, I was intrigued. And instantly hooked. And then plowed through the first 4 seasons on DVD.

This fervor for Buffy, got me addicted to all things Weadon, so my answer also carries over to "Angel" and "Firefly".

Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

CSI, Alias, Weeds!

Martha Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

We've been watching old "Bones" episodes on DVD just to catch up. Not too long ago we watched the entire "Sports Night" oeuvre (OK, it's not that long) and we watched all 6 seasons of "Sex and the City" on DVD because we are *way* too cheap to get HBO.

C Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

Queer as Folk, Grey's Anatomy, and most recently Greek.

rls Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

I watched the first four seasons of The Wire on DVD, and that way of watching spoiled me. I much preferred watching on DVD vs week by week, which is how I watched for the fifth and final season. The Wire is made for DVD watching - because of how engrossing it is.

Caitlin Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

The question is really "What HAVEN'T I discovered on DVD?" Just in the past month and a half I've watched Big Love, Flight of the Conchords, The Comeback, and Freaks and Geeks. Thanks go to Netflix and my local library for carrying a sweet collection of DVDs.

Nee Nee Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

I caught up on the first season of 24 while I was watching the 2nd season. I did the same with Grey's Anatomy. Alias, however, is the show that I missed entirely. I watched every episode of it on DVD, which actually may have been better than having to wait every week to see what was going to happen.

Sari Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

Venture Brothers!! 20 minute nuggets of greatness I can't believe I had been missing.

Jessie Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, 24.

I also watched the first 3 seasons of Alias on DVD before finally being able to watch it in Primetime.

Dinosaur Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:26 PM EST

"The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles". The locations are beautifully filmed, the music is movie-quality, and the stories range from terrific drama and adventure to silly comedy. I'm about halfway through the series and loving every minute.

Michie Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

The Shield & Dexter; I am totally hooked now!!

KEVIN Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

TRU CALLING! WATCHED IT A FEW TIMES ON FOX--FINALLY BOUGHT THE SERIERS ON DVD A FEW WEEKS AGO, SUCH A SHAME IT GOT CANCELED WHEN IT DID, REALLY STARTED TO BUILD SOME GREAT TWISTS AND TURNS. BUT I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING DUSHKU IN DOLLHOUSE, SO MAYBE IT WAS FOR THE BEST!

T-rav Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

The Wire. Probably one of the most well-written and acted pieces of entertainment out there.

Miss Dahlia Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

Thanks to the writer's strike I started buying whatever TV series was on sale that week and became completely obsessed with Veronica Mars and The OC. I hate myself for thinking I was too good for those shows when they were actually on the air. Shame on me for being so judgmental!

Sean Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

1. Oz
2. Popular
3. Dead Like Me
4. Carnivale

JeniB Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Big Love from HBO...this show is excellent! I am soooooo glad I realized what i was missing. If you haven't seen this series yet...rent/buy the DVDs immediately! you won't regret it.

maria Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

Weeds ROCKS!!!!

Seth Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

Arrested Development, thank god a friend turned me on to it and I bought all 3 seasons that day.....I'm sorry I wasn't there to put up a fight while it was still on the air....DEXTER is a great find on DVD as well...way too long between seasons though....

Johnny Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

Ok, so exactly how many times is PopWatch going to ask this same question? I know we have already done this at least twice.

Kate Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

Too many to count. Thank God for Netflix.
Already watched: Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Arrested Development, The Sopranos, Dexter, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, Wonderfalls, Bones, House, Blackadder, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, The Office UK, 30 Rock, Rome, Deadwood, Sports Night.
Currently watching: The Venture Bros.
In the queue: Extras, Entourage, Futurama, Farscape.

pede Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

Rescue Me was my first foray into the DVD on TV experience, in that I actually bought the first two seasons with no idea if I'd like it or not. (that was the only thing my exbf was ever right about, that I HAD to watch Rescue Me) That started an obsession with shows I hadn't seen - Veronica Mars, Friday Night Lights, Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Dexter, Entourage (sorry, hated it) and now its CSI. Only the Vegas version, because I've got a huge crush on William Peterson. Oh yeah, and The Closer, which I'm waiting for Season 3 to come out next week. Blockbuster Online is finally good for something other than the 1 or 2 good movies that comes out every month.

Maryte Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

"Dexter"

dave Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

Oh I forget the best one of all: The New Adventures of Old Christine..... if you haven't watched this yet, get the DVDs IMMEDIATELY!

Amy Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

The amazing Friday Night Lights
Weeds
Sopranos
Entourage
Rescue Me

dave Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:45 AM EST

I got into Grey's Anatomy, Queer as Folk, Dante's Cove, Weeds, and Extras through netflix. A box of oreos and a marathon is my favorite way to watch TV. I caught up with Samantha who on abc.com. Oh - and as soon as Dirty Sexy Money is on DVD, I am planning on watching.

Stef Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

I used to get mad at my friends who said that they watched Arrested Development on DVD and don't understand why it got canceled so soon. Because you didn't watch it when it was on TV, silly!

Emilee Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Freaks and Geeks, Wonderfalls, Battlestar Galactica, The (British) Office, 30 Rock, and I'm getting ready to start Veronica Mars.

KR Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

Freaks and Geeks***
first season Lost
first season Heroes
Battlestar Gallatica

So many shows are can't miss an episode events nowadays that I wait till they are on video b4 watching.

Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

Freaks and Geeks
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Firefly

Sharlin Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

I found how great Doctor Who was with its DVD's. British television at its best and Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant as the 9th and 10th doctors respectively are awesome.

Snarf Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

Six Feet Under
Rome
Dexter
Dr Who (new weries)

Not so much "discovered" as just be able to watch as I can watch in two or three hour increments and obsess.

Ally Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

Well, more DVR/SpikeTV than DVD but - Star Trek Voyager - I was a total dork as a kid and loved Next Generation, but never go into Voyager - but thanks to it's 2-4 showtimes a day, I've been able to watch the entire series in about 6 months!

KateDFW Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

OMG, it's Weeds for me too! A friend had given me S1 probably a year ago and I just got around to watching it. Since then I have gone through S1 & S2. I am on the last disc of S3. I am totally obsessed with this show. Mary Louise Parker, Kevin Nealon, Elizabeth Perkins and Justin Kirk are GREAT! I am seriously thinking about dropping HBO and switching to Showtime so I can get my Weeds "fix"! Hands down one of the best shows on TV!

I am waiting for July 1st (DVD release date) so I can watch Mad Men (never seen it) before the new season starts on AMC. Yeah, just what I need, another show to get involved with. But at least TV has gotten good again!

Lauren Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

M--I second the Roseanne love. I was in grade school/junior high in its heyday, so I didn't really get it. However, last year I had a two-month temp job where I was home by 5, and a local channel had Roseanne reruns from 5-6 every day. My roommate and I got hooked...so funny, true, and touching, with a freaking stellar cast. John Goodman's awesome.

Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

I'm another Battlestar Galactica convert - but am wondering if any one else, like me, finds it annoying to start watching in real time on TV after being able to get IMMEDIATE (or semi-immediate depending on the speed of netflix) satisfaction watching as many eps in a sitting as they want?

Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

Battlestar Galactica - I just started watching and in 3 weeks have made it through the first two seasons via netflix...I am desperately trying to get through as much as possible before I accidently learn the identity of any more cylons! I am so ashamed of myself for not realizing how fantastic BSG was before now!

Jimi Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

oh.. and how could i forget

6- Tudors.. AWESOME!

Jimi Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

1-Firefly - also wish i knew it when it originally aired.. it's amazing.
2-Weeds - i'm almost caught up and contemplating getting showtime so i can watch season 4 in real time..
3-Dead Like Me
4-Popular - am i the only person who craves for more mary cherry?
5-Rome - season 1.. i caught season 2 real time

I think that covers all of them

Dave Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:05 AM EST

Queer as Folk, Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica, The Office (British version).

Kendra Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Dead Like Me

Karrah Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

Arrested Development! I'm obsessed!
Grey's Anatomy
The Office
Once & Again

Dennis Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

I just recently got HBO and Showtime, but before then, I found some treasures with TV on DVD. I got into Dexter, Tell Me You Love Me, Californication and Entourage all by hearing people tell me how great they were and just blindly buying them on dvd. Luckily, they've all been great watches and ones that I continue to have repeat viewings of. I also just got on the Weeds bandwagon and think it's great.

M Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

Scrubs--what seemed annoying in three-second channel-surfing bites becomes utterly hilarious and sometimes even touching over the course of a whole season.

Roseanne--The last great family sitcom? Again, what seemed grating in three-second snippets (mainly the title character) becomes utterly hilarious and sometimes even touching over the course of a whole season.

ML Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

SO many! Thank god for Netflix.
Eureka
Psych
Stargate Atlantis
Deadwood
Freaks and Geeks
Undeclared
John From Cincinatti
Buffy and Angel (Only saw the last season "live" of each)
And my queue is filled with more (X-Files, Numbers, The Tudors, Rome, The Wire, the list goes on...)

Rogertick Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Someone should really compile the numbers based on the titles gathered here, as I see many people coming to many of the same shows. Good Bless Netflix right?

My List includes:
Sports Night (Amazing)
Rome
Weeds
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Firefly
Battlestar Galactica
Nip/Tuck
Rescue Me
Flight of the Conchords
Extras
The Office

Discovered Weeds and Entourage on DVD and now tune in every week.
Watched Season 1 of Dexter and The Tudors on On Demand.
Caught up on the first 3 seasons of Sopranos that I missed.
Watched all of Arrested Development in about 2 weeks and am currently working on season 2 of Veronica Mars.
Want to watch Twin Peaks, Six Feet Under, X-Files, etc...

Deids Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

I have to jump on the Veronica Mars bandwagon here. Did not watch a bit of it as I will admit I sort of looked down on UPN at the time. Loved every minute.

Someone else mentioned Mad Men as well. When I heard the 2nd season is bascially the only thing on tv this summer (other than reality or premium cable shows), I jumped on my chance to rent the first season. It's a stellar show, and I'm excited to now watch real time!

Darren Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

NewsRadio!!! How I missed it the first time around I'll never know. It's now my favorite show along with The Office and 30 Rock.

Rebekah Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

I watched every episode of Sex and the City on DVD.
I finally got HBO in the second half of the final season of The Sopranos. Having watched most of it marathon style it was weird to wait a whole week for each episode.

Jon Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:41 AM EST

Arrested Development. I never watched the show when it was on the air (not sure why), but I love it on DVD.
And TV on DVD also reignited my love for Sports Night. Such a great show. Too bad it only lasted 2 seasons.

aymzer Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Sports Night and Battlestay Galactica

sean Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

Wonderfalls

pirate Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

1)Buffy the vampire slayer
2)The Office
3)Bones
4)L&O:SVU
5)FRIENDS
6)Deadwood
7)The Shield

Ar Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

Grey's anatomy (got tired after the first 2 seasons) and House (loving it!)

Elle Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:38 AM EST

The boxed-set is by far one of the greatest things ever. It has allowed me to discover: Supernatural, Veronica Mars, Charmed (rather, I returned to this one as I'd missed several seasons in the later years) 21 Jumpstreet, CSI, Without a Trace and Law and Order:SVU. Eventually, I will also discover Smallville, Criminal Minds (the early years) and a number of other televisions gems I just don't have time for now. Thanks DVD-God, you're my hero.

Shaun Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

Fell in love with "the L word" after a friend of mine loaned me the dvd's for the 1st & 2nd seasons.
I watched the 1st & 2nd seasons of "Veronica Mars" religiously, but missed out on a good chunk of the 3rd due to pre-empting for sports in my area. Caught up with the dvds. I agree with the other poster, we need a movie, there really was no 'finale'!
Also: Six Feet Under, Felicity and Angel.

Minutiae Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

For me it was Curb Your Enthusiasm. A few years ago a coworker of my hubby's loaned him the Season 1 DVD, and we immediately fell in love with the show. Of course, we had to go buy all of the seasons that were available on DVD at the time to catch up, too!

JMC Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

Firefly, Stargate SG-1, Buffy, Angel, The Office, Bones, and lots of British Shows: Red Dwarf, Coupling, costume dramas, etc.

Liz Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

Veronica Mars on DVD after it was off the air. I watched the entire 3 seasons in a month and loved every minute of it. After I was done I continued to watch them for a 2nd time. It is just THAT good!

Three seasons is just too little we need a movie!!

Beth Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

Gilmore Girls and the last season of Sex and the City

Angela Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

Arrested Development

&

Firefly

Karen Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:21 AM EST

Two shows that bring a tear to my eye to know that they are gone: Arrested Development and Firefly. Also the fantastic Brit drama MI-5.

Anna Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:18 AM EST

I fell in love with Entourage through OnDemand if that counts...

Dee Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

30 Rock. You can thank the strike for that one Liz Lemon!

Andy Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

-X-Files, watched the first two seasons then when they announced the complete collection I pre-ordered it.
-Veronica Mars
-Grey's Anatomy
-Twin Peaks
-Millennium

LizO Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

Deadwood!

Don't know what I'd do without Netflix.

Lauren Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

Like so many people on here, it's hard for me to think of a favorite show I DIDN'T get into on DVD. But just for funsies, let's make a list!

Arrested Development (season 1, then I was able to watch it on TV!)
30 Rock (ditto)
Friday Night Lights (ditto)
The Office (seasons 1 and 2, I started watching it on TV season 3)

Only on DVD:
Freaks and Geeks
Sex and the City
Six Feet Under
The L Word
The Office (British)
Peep Show (hilarious British comedy, sort of Odd Couple-ish, but you hear both the roommates' perspectives)

Oh, and my best friend/former roommate is able to get his hands on The Apprentice UK. SO GOOD. Sir Alan Sugar is SO much scarier than Trump, it's an hour long, and since it's the BBC, they don't bleep out cursing!

TsuKata Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

So far this spring/summer, I've checked out:
The Riches (decided after Season 1 that it was stretching my ability to suspend belief)
This American Life
Weeds (current addiction, watched 4 eps in a row last night)
The Tudors

Can I just say that I [heart] Amazon Unbox? Way better than DVD rental. If I could get commentary from them, I might never buy or rent a DVD again.

Al Fredo Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

I am just getting into unwatched TV on DVD. I caught Wonderfalls (fantastic; how did this get cancelled so early?), now checking out BSG, and will jump into Arrested Development pretty soon. The new TV Classics list sure helps to find candidates.

elena Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

The first one I remember discovering was House during Febuary Break. There was nothing to do, so I just sat in front of my television watching 18+ hours of the addicting Hugh Laurie go at it with THE GUY FROM DEAD POETS SOCIETY (which made me incredibly happy when I discovered that). Now I'm a House junkie and watch it all the time. Plus, How I Met Your Mother (because I had finished my Buffy dvd run and Willow, Alyson Hannigan, had always been my favorite. wow, has she grown up into comedic chops lady!), Dexter (only season one so far, but wow), Everwood (only season one out? shame on you, WB/UPN now CW), Veronica Mars (wow. how did I miss this show?), Buffy and Angel (on TNT), Six Feet Under, and Bones!
There are probably more, but those are the ones that come to mind. And all the ones that are still on tv I watch now, which is a TON of television. But I love it!

Audrey Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

The Shield. I have been speed watching it the last few weeks so I should be caught up on all 6 seasons by the time season 7 premieres this fall. The suprisingly fun thing about watching these on DVD has been the commentary, deleted scenes, and behind the scenes specials available on the DVD.

bonash Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

Arrested Development. I want to cry that there were only 3 seasons. I have watched the entire series twice in the last 6 weeks.

Scout Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

Laura R. I LOVE the fact that you, at nineteen, have discovered and enjoyed NewsRadio. That is one of the main reasons I LOVE Netflix. Phil Hartman was brilliant on that show.

I'v caught so many things on DVD, some because I missed them when first run, others because watching on DVD has become more fulfilling than watching "live." Multiple eps in one sitting, no commercials, viewing whenever convenient. So I often make the choice to go DVD rather than live. The shows I caught on DVD after never considering them on TV are:

Slings & Arrows
Arrested Development
Veronica Mars
Gilmore Girls
Extras
Huff
Battlestar Galactica

Kathleen Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

Battlestar Galactica. *sigh* I'm so ashamed. I wish I had been a fan from the beginning. But, in my defense, I don't have cable - which means I pretty much want to have Netflix's babies. Also got into Ugly Betty thanks to Netflix.

Wojo Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

I wait for most stuff to come out on DVD anyway because Netflix is so convenient, and I watch too many movies/too much tv to stay current with everything anyway. But the ones that I knew the least about before seeing and were the most fun to watch were "Deadwood" and "The Wire." All I really knew about them was one was a Western with a lot of cursing and the other was a cop show in Baltimore. As for slightly older fare, I've started watching "The Twilight Zone," since I had never seen an episode before, and the British show "Poirot" about the Agatha Christie detective.

aaa Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:30 AM EST

Netflix has been such a godsend -- people think I'm strange when I tell them I mainly use it to catch up on TV shows that I missed. I was able to finally see the brilliance of The Office, Veronica Mars, Bones, Rome, and most recently, Firefly. Next up are The Tudors and Burn Notice.

Laura R. Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:29 AM EST

The question should be, What TV show DIDN'T I discover on DVD? I'm only nineteen, and therefore missed out on the early seasons, and sometimes entire runs, of awesome-but-R-rated shows like The Wire and The Sopranos, "grown-up" sitcoms like NewsRadio, and shows that were just plain good but out of my realm of interest at the time, like Freaks & Geeks, Dead Like Me, and ESPN's Playmakers. I love TV on DVD for a lot of reasons, but being able to watch entire series, straight through, that I otherwise would never get to see is the perk at the top of the list.

julia Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

Hello, my name is julia and I am a tv-on-DVD (or now Hulu) addict. I've been known to do great, long swaths of entire series in a week or two (depending on the Netflix gods). In no paticular order:

Farscape
Battlestar Galatica (new version)
Burn Notice
Psych
Bones
Weeds

It's gotten to the point where I get annoyed when I sit down to watch an actual, individual show on TV and I can't skip the commercial or find the director's commentary. It's a sickness, I tell you!

Rahul Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:23 AM EST

I've caught up with many shows on DVD, mostly catching up on HBO shows when I didn't have the money to subscribe.
I most recently caught up on The Wire. In the past there was The Sopranos, Entourage, and Deadwood.

lls Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

lost. my mom was into it the first season and i gave it a shot for about half an episode. i thought it was stupid "who ever heard of polar bears on an island?" then my friend got the first season on dvd. i watched the whole thing over spring break and then bought everything i'd missed of season 2 from itunes. I've been hooked ever since!

Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

I watched Felicity, Six Feet Under, Alias, and Arrested Development on DVD in the last 3 summers. Right now I'm halfway through season 3 of The Sopranos, but it's hard to avoid spoilers, even in EW!

Holly Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled and I was home for days I discovered The Sopranos on DVD and was hooked. Also thanks to EW I finally rented Freaks and Geeks and it's my all time favorite show.

ilana Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:07 AM EST

I watched the first 3 1/2 seasons of lost on my computer within like 2 months and caught up in time to watch the end of the 4th season on TV!!! I'm so hooked now.
Also, I (THANKFULLY) discovered 30 Rock on DVD and now I'm an addict, that show is really amazing.

Alex Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

Oh yeah, Weeds and The Tudors for me too. I think I watch more TV on DVD, trying desperately to catch up with everything I've missed. Some others that have only been revealed to me on DVD:
Deadwood
Firefly
Rome
House
One Tree Hill
Dead Like Me
Battlestar Galactica

And while I watched these shows when they originally aired, DVD sets have allowed me to continually revel in the greatness that was Six Feet Under, Arrested Development and Veronica Mars.

Melody Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

The OC- for me it was never a must see show when it was on and I'm sure there were other shows I watched while it was on so I couldn't record it. I bought the whole series afterwards and while I still don't looooooooove it (my heart belongs to One Tree Hill) I'm glad I got it- I love Seth and Summer.

Applejax Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

Firefly and Veronica Mars Season 1

RayT Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

"Mad Men: Season 1" is at the top of my Blockbuster Online queue waiting to ship. When it premiered, I thought to myself, "Who the hell is going to watch an original series on AMC?"

Em Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:44 AM EST

During the writers's strike I started watching tv on dvd.I have now seen every episode of Arrested Development, Firefly, Freaks and Geeks, and Dead Like Me The strike was actually a good thing for me! Now I feel dumb for not watching any of those quality shows when they were on originally.

ypulliza Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

I mean, TV on DVD! LOL!!

ypulliza Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

For me, it has been Freaks and Geeks and Battlestar Galactica. Thank goodness for DVD on TV!!

Susan Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:39 AM EST

WEEDS! Bought Season 1 at Target...rented Season 2 from the library...bought Season 3 the day it went on sale earlier this month. Now I'm going crazy knowing Season 4 is on Showtime now and I can't watch it! It will be too long until it's out on DVD. Anyone have any ideas on how I can watch the latest season of the BEST show ever? (other than adding more $ to my already expensive cable bill).

Babs Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

I don't have cable at all, so there are many. Flight of the Conchords, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Extras, Dead Like Me, Rome, Battlestar Galactica... I know there are more, just can't think right now. I've been watching the CBS version of Dexter. No cable excuse for Firefly and Wonderfalls, though; just missed the boat at the time.

m Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

Friday Night Lights!

Chris Richards Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

I never watched Dead Like Me or The West Wing when they were actually on. It ws only a year after they were off the air that I watched them, and I power-watched most of the way through them.

Ceballos Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

...oh, and "The Wire" and "Friday Night Lights"

Ceballos Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

I'm a little poor, so I usually end up discovering TV shows on DVD when individual seasons go for sale at Best Buy or somewhere else for around $20. If a TV season hits that price and I've read that it's supposed to be a good show and it's something I think I might enjoy, I take the plunge. That's how I got into:

Arrested Development
Entourage
Rescue Me
Nip/Tuck
and, yes, Weeds

Christina Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

Buffy (finishing it this weekend)
Angel (next on the docket)
Firefly
Battlestar Galactica
The West Wing
Bones

TV on DVD keeps me sane, and has let me watch a lot of series that I didn't watch before my current television obsession. It also lets me keep all-time favorites close at hand. Alias, Gilmore Girls, The Office, Friday Night Lights.

Shana Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

L Word, Dexter, Sex and the City, someday I'll get around to Six Feet Under on DVD

Rose Tyler Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:24 AM EST

1. Dead Like Me- We didn't have Showtime when this show was on the air, not that that was long.
2. Rome- Kept putting off watching it. Luckily we caught up with Season 1 in time to watch the marvelous second season in real time.

Tiffany Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:20 AM EST

I was way behind and have only watched Gilmore Girls on DVD, never on network TV.

Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:20 AM EST

Buffy, Angel and Firefly. Also Undeclared and Freaks and Geeks. And I have Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me waiting for me once I finish Angel. Thank God for DVD, or else I'd miss out on the geniuses of Joss Whedon and Judd Apatow.

Nate Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

I'm the same way, Amy, it's always the premium cable shows -- Weeds, Dexter, and Entourage. But I was also lucky enough to find Battlestar Galactica after the 2nd season so now I'm caught up and totally hooked!

Molly Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

West Wing
Felicity
Arrested Development
Firefly + Wonderfalls

It's the last two that really break my heart, because had I known they were so stellar, I would have recruited any additional friend/viewer I could find...
