The greatest (worst) 'Survivor' audition of all time?

Jun 6, 2008, 06:50 PM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: Strange Bedfellows, Television, Web/Tech

Never one to let my friends embarrass themselves in silence, I am proud to bring you the Survivor audition tape of my pal Lindsay Robertson, co-proprietor of Videogum, and quite possibly the worst candidate for that show in the history of ever. Of course, this isn't quite serious -- she did it on a dare -- but there are still several things to recommend it. I particularly enjoy the copy of Infinite Jest sitting oh-so-casually on the coffee table, as if to say "Oh that? It's just a 1,079 page PoMo novel that I not only read years ago, but keep nearby in case I want to flip through it again." See for yourself:

And now, PopWatchers, it's confession time: Ever tried out for Survivor (or any other reality show)? More importantly: Got video? If I see enough honesty in the comments, I may be persuaded to embarrass myself very publicly here next week, so c'mon, kids, cough it up.

I don't watch Survivor and never have, but listen up CBS. Put her on the show and I will tune in. She cracks me up.

I would totally apply for Survivor or TAR, but they don't want anything to do with them Canadians ! And up here, the shows, well let's just say they're not worth it...

OKAY FINE! Maybe I put together an audition tape for "Real World Seattle" where I then accidentally left it out where my roommate saw it and recorded whatever Star Trek series du jour was on at the time over it.

I didn't realize what had happened until he asked where his tape was and I realized I had sent in a video of syndicated sci-fi along with my cover letter.

I was mortified at what they must have thought of me, but I did keep the rejection letter they sent encouraging me to "continue to cultivate my personality" and apply the next season.

I tried out for a recent season of the Real World and actually made it to the third round of casting. I think it must have been for one of the more recent seasons (maybe Sydney)but thank God I didn't make it. Living with 6 certifiable psychos does not make up for living in a sick pad.

Why am I not surprised that Lindsay and Whitney are friends?

Alex Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

My friend and I auditioned for the upcoming installment of The Amazing Race, but our video was pretty dull so nothing came of it.

I'll admit that I sent in a tape for Survivor for Survivor: Africa. And I'd still love to do it. Not enough to make another video, though.

I sent in a tape for The Real World almost ten years ago. I was a sad 19 year old wanting to get out of Oklahoma and experience "the real world." When I got the letter in the mail basically saying that I wasn't interesting/slutty enough to be on the show I was devastated for weeks.

I applied to be on Road Rules in 99, after I watched the whole season in Australia. It looked like so much fun! Never heard from anyone, though. I must have come off as too well-adjusted and/or flabby.

No video, but I once drove four hours and stayed the night in Chicago by myself so I could try out for "The Apprentice." This was during the show's excellent first season before it descended into a shouting match.

There was a group of us that bonded as we waited since 5 a.m. for a awkward group interview. We were actually told whomever talks the loudest gets heard, which explains why the show went the direction it did.

Heh. Sorry, Whitney. Perhaps most of us have more of a healthy survival instinct than you might suspect and fear for our sanity if we see those audition tapes again.

THIS IS NOT GOING TO GET IT DONE, PEOPLE

As soon as my roommate and I were of eligible age, we sent in a tape for The Amazing Race. We spend most of the time talking about our SAT scores...it's not a great audition, I must say. Now that we're older and wiser, we're going to try again.

Mavis Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

I sent in a tape for the Amazing Race with my best friend. We pretty much just sat there talking, but our little "thing" to catch the producers' eye was that when we would go traveling, I take pictures of her eating, don't ask me why cause I don't know how it started. But I have over 20 pictures of her eating in different places. So on the tape I said what better way to take pictures of her eating all over the world, than by going on the Amazing Race! I even put together a little bit of show and tell showing the pictures and stating where she was photographed eating. Funny video, but we sent the only copy in! It would have been funny to watch that over and over again!

I have what I thought was a pretty awesome audition tape that involved me almost breaking my foot and re-creating "Flashdance", but the only way it will ever be seen is if I eventually make it onto the actual show - no matter how tempting the idea of additional online video embarrassment is. I am reserving it all for national television.

Jo Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 04:20 AM EST

I sent in an Amazing Race application for season 3 or 4, but I'm rather glad that I don't have a copy of it now to cringe over. Let's just say that I am in no way surprised that my hubby and I didn't get picked.

Laura Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

Oh man, I so wish I had a copy of my older sister's Amazing Race audition video. I helped film her & her friend running around Houston doing a mock-leg of the show, and it was hilarious. I really would put it online, it was awesome.

Crystal Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

I sent in a video for TARs 2nd season with my friend. We were perfect (one runs marathons, one watches tv! one is black, one is white! one is a guy, one is a girl! I could go on). I also applied for the Real World back in the day - what turned out to be the Boston season.

Alas, I seriously don't know where the tapes are today, I'd love to see my Real World one.

Fiser Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

I would audition for Survivor if they let me bring a case of Purple and a copy of Ender's Game. And my health workout coach. But since I'm being held captive in a mozzarella factory, I'll have to pass on this one.

people, cough up your stories. i can assure you that the embarrassing surprise, now apparently removed from the internet for your protection, is worth your while.
