More 'Watchmen' than you can handle

Minutemen_l I've long wondered how even a filmmaker as inventive as Zack Snyder is going to be able to do justice to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' epic Watchmen. One of the unique virtues of their graphic novel is the way it takes full advantage of its medium — the overlap of words, pictures, and supplemental material — to tell a complete story, full of overlapping plot strands, parallels of past, present, and future, of events in the story and the literary and pictorial allusions that comment on them. It seemed inevitable that a lot of that material would have to be streamlined or jettisoned for Watchmen to work as a movie.

Fortunately, it looks like Snyder is doing his best to keep the extensive backstory and sidestory material. Watchmen is set in a world that both reveres and scorns comic-book superheroes. The latter-day heroes at the story's center live their lives informed by the rich history of a previous generation of costumed crimefighters. Yesterday, the filmmakers released to Ain't It Cool News a class photo of the first-generation heroes, the Minutemen (pictured), and that single photo should be enough to whet the appetites of Watchmenologists. Not only is it faithful to similar artwork from the Gibbons drawings, but the placement of the various Minutemen in the photo hints at the relationships that will be important later in the story. (Kneeling in the foreground is the Comedian, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, whose latter-day actions are the story's catalyst.) Plus, the photo's warm sepia tone and, its quaint, baggy costumes suggest that the film will maintain a cheeky but fond reverence for the masked heroes who starred in the (real world's) earliest comic books.

That backstory will be further explored in a mockumentary called Under The Hood, a side project Snyder is overseeing, along with Tales of the Black Freighter, a grim pirate saga that appears in Watchmen in the form of a comic book one character reads throughout the story, offering a counterpoint to the main superhero plot. Both Under the Hood and Black Freighter will be released on DVD at the time of Watchmen's big-screen release next March. That's not quite the same thing as being able to enjoy these stories and refer back to them while reading the main Watchmen story, as you can with the graphic novel, but it's pretty close. Props to Snyder for trying to replicate as closely as possible the rich and allusive experience of reading the book — and to Warner Bros. for letting him do so.

I wasn't a big fan of 300, but if it was the worst movie you've seen in a theatre in the last 10 years, you've been staying home a lot.

I agree that Watchmen would work better as an HBO mini-series, and fans have been saying that for years. That's not how it's being done, so I hope Snyder gets it right.

There is a lot of material, but if you drop the pirate story, which would just confuse most audiences anyway, that reduces it somewhat. Snyder has said he wants to include the pirate story on a special edition DVD, so we'll still be able to see it.

From everything I've seen so far, I'm cautiously optimistic. And hey, if it sucks, I've still got the awesome graphic novel.

Kevin Thu, May 29, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

I just hope this movie isn't as bad as the emotionally vacant snooze-a-thon that was 300, easily the worst movie I've seen in the theater this decade.

Eddy Green Thu, May 29, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

I'm going to have to quote Stephen King in regard to some of the translational flops of his literary gems, "I'm always curious, and open to seeing what new formats can do for old works. And the books are unimpeachable, beyond change (as long as they keep the censors at bay)". With that said, I have little faith in the translation between my comics and the big screen. Although, this cat did a solid job with "300" and it is my nature to be skeptical.

George Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:58 AM EST

Not to sound like I'm putting the movie down or anything...but does anyone else think that, for a comic book like Watchmen, because it's so dense and so much is contained within, that maybe rather than a movie, make it a mini-series on TV? Like, maybe an 8 hour miniseries to contain everything? This isn't like X-men or Spider-man, which have been around for 40 years and thousands of issues and are open-ended, where you can take bits and pieces and make it a movie or 3. This comic book had a beginning, a middle, and and ending, so I do worry that crmamming it all in 2 or 3 hours may leave too much out. Still, the director does seem intent on capturing the spirit of the comic series at least, so that's a good sign. And this pic does look good.

Ben Wed, May 28, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

We'll see what can be done when the studio is going to want this cut down to 90-120 minutes and the movie should probably cover 3 hours or more to really be faithful to what Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons intended. I just shiver that this will be another "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" fiasco...

Tyler Wed, May 28, 2008 at 05:18 PM EST

In a decade-plus of hearing Watchmen movie rumors, this is the first time I've ever been optimistic. Very interesting and thoughtful approach, and yes, the DVD/"directors cut" would be a great move.

Scotty B. Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Man, I hope that Warner's ponies up the resources for Snyder to cut together an uber-Watchmen DVD like you say, David. What a cool way to create a unique after-market experience to make the flick "new" from what we see in the theater!

Jennifer Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

Snarf Wed, May 28, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

Never read Watchmen, but I'm aware of it. Gotta say though, I am looking forward to seeing this movie.

David Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

I've heard Snyder say in interviews that he will re-cut the film for DVD and incorporate parts of the Black Frigate and Under the Hood into one version that mirrors the graphic novel's structure.
