PopWatch Confessional: Which seminal band makes you seminauseated?

May 6, 2008, 05:18 PM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: Coachella 2008, Music, Ouch! That was my ear!, PopWatch Confessional, Whining

Pinkfloyd_l It's been nearly 48 hours since I last touched the dead grass of the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, PopWatchers, but after two consecutive weekends of music festival goodness, I'm having a hard time letting go. Specifically, I can't get over the pained reactions from several of you Pink Floyd fans to my dismissal of Roger Waters' set at Coachella. It seems you come out in force to defend your rock gods: My friend and picnic-table companion Maura faced the same rage after her post over on Idolator, and even Willman's informed, articulate critique here led to howling.

So I got to thinking: Surely I'm not the only one who can't make it all the way through the pretentious muddle of Dark Side of the Moon (pictured), thought "Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2" was barely listenable even before classic rock stations beat it to death with the over-programming stick, and never once spent any time staring at a blacklight poster while playing "Mother" on repeat and crying a little because it's just so deep, man. Of course, from an objective standpoint, I can recognize the talent/craft involved; I can even occasionally tolerate "Wish You Were Here" — although nine out of ten times I mistake it for "I Wish It Would Rain Down." And yes, I understand the Pink Floyd influence on several of the groups I legitimately enjoy today. But do I have to actively like and/or be exposed to Pink Floyd in order to have this understanding? Ugh. Please. No.

Your turn, PopWatchers: What seminal band (or solo artist) can you not stand? Now's the time to get it off your chest. And hey, you can be anonymous, so one ever need know you secretly harbor a passionate hatred for the Beatles and everything those demented Liverpudlians* stood for! Let it out!

*Not my actual opinion

Bethany Thu, May 22, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

This is kind of old now, but I just wanted to throw this out there--I really, really can't stand Leonard Cohen. There. I said it.

Mike Thu, May 15, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

It must pain you to know that most of the Coachella forum thinks Waters is the best set in the festivals history - and these are people who have been going for years.

The people calling you guys idiots for ripping the show aren't really Floyd fans. See.. they saw the show.

ParrotHead Fri, May 9, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

I can relate to, but don't get the fascination with the Grateful Dead. I like Jerry Garcia as only an ice cream flavor. Though, I guess DeadHeads wouldn't understand my Hawaiian shirt, flip flops, grass skirt, and fin hat.

Stephanie T. Fri, May 9, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

Wow Eric you are really pissed. For me, if you are a trained musician (Gilmour), your music will stand the test of time. If you are someone who at the time could look good on camera (Brit minus KFC) then your music won't. And Utopia is okay, except Todd Rundgren is a better live performer than recorded, and does not really need a band. But that's just my opinion.

Daveman Fri, May 9, 2008 at 03:07 AM EST

This goes to the people who dislike or "don't get" REAL music;
The reason why you don’t like it is because people naturally dislike something they can't understand. Music is an audible art form that supposed to project emotions. If the artists’ intention was for everyone to "get it" just to relate to the mass populous for the purpose of selling records, then they'd only sing versions of spice girls, madonna & timberlake.
Real music has a soul, that's why most people don't forget the songs, because it reminds them of a feeling and it brings that feeling back. Not just something cute to tap their foot to and then forget.
Long live PJ, LONG LIVE ART!!

ToniDanynza Thu, May 8, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

I absolutely HATE Inxs (with the exception of Never Tear Us Apart), REM and U2. Bonos is a bane to the earth!

lunaburning Thu, May 8, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

I just don't get the Grateful Dead. I never have. I don't exactly hate them, as much as I have no feelings for them whatsoever. Frankly, they just bore me. If I never hear another Dead song again in my life, I don't think that I'll even notice.

eeks Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

bon jovi, bruce the boss, pffft ANY top 40 artist of today. I don't get how they are on those charts, oh wait it's all label bs! nobody is even illegally downloading jodi sparks. eeeeeeeeeks!

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

You know, here are some artists that I don't think I saw ANY negative picks on:

Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, Toto, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Electric Light Orchestra, The Cars, Queen, Styx, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Yes, Alan Parsons Project, Asia, Boston, Kansas, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Hall & Oates, Rod Stewart, The Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Heart, Cheap Trick, The Police, Van Halen, R.E.M.

Does that mean that everybody likes them?? I doubt it.

adam Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

After my last post, I reviewed the comments and now see the confusion. A different Adam (it is a common name) stated he did not enjoy Rush. That was not me.

adam Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

Martha. I don't get upset when people "don't like my favorite band" nor did I "trash" any other bands. My point was that it is silly to promote hate, especially when it could be offensive to those who enjoy the bands music. Whitney is certainly entitled to her opinions, but I find it strange that someone who appears to like and work in the music industry would spend her time encouraging others to make disparaging comments on bands. Like I said originally, musical taste differ and people often form emotional bonds and attachments to their favorite musicians. When you attack an artist, you collaterally attack all those who like them. My point was, if you don't like a certain sound, simply turn it off. Don't waste your time spreading hate and offending others. It's that simple. Perhaps instead of posting an article bashing bands she does not like, Whitney could spend her time promoting the artists that she does enjoy.

~libby~ Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

I can't bear Rush, Steve Miller, and Led Zeppelin. Oh, and I know this is practically heresy, but I can't stand The Pretenders.

Martha Thu, May 8, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Hey, Eric and Adam, why get so upset just because people don't like your favorite band? Especially when you don't hesitate to trash current musical acts, who themselves might (in 30 years) be characterized as "seminal." And stop attacking Whitney - she's as entitled to her musical opinion as anyone.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

When I was in college, I was a DJ on the radio and I used to do a weekend midnight show that featured many obscure and psychedelic rock classics; the kind of stuff you'd never hear on classic rock radio today, like Pink Floyd's "Echoes", "Dogs", "Interstellar Overdrive", "A Saucerful of Secrets", etc. and other full album side cuts from bands like Yes, The Grateful Dead, Utopia, etc.

adam Thu, May 8, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

Good point Eric. I wonder if Whiteny got permission and secured the right to use Pink Floyd's copyrighted album cover to promote her hate filled article.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Journey and Def Leppard were the soundtrack of my high school years in the '80s. I still love them!

Tom Mangan Thu, May 8, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Thanks whittlz, for reminding me why I can't bear to hear Pink Floyd anymore: so much carping about how terrible it is to be a rich white rock star. Get over it, guys. I still like "Wish You Were Here," though.

Sorry to the rest of ya, though, but hatin' on Dylan, the Stones and Led Zep is just wrong. Hatin' on Bad Co., Journey, Jethro Tull is fine, though none of these is especially "seminal."

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

Thank you, Adam! I got your back! It almost sickens me to see the cover of probably the greatest rock album of all time associated with Whitney's article!

I swear, if "American Idol" and "Dancing With the Stars" ever go off the air, and Michael Bay stops making movies, what will this blog ever have to talk about??

adam Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Good job spreading hate! That's just what this world needs more of! Music should never be about hate. If you don't like an artist or a song, just TURN IT OFF. While I don't like everything I hear, I respect everyones opinions. Music is very personal and attacking an artist is often a personal attack on those who enjoy their music. You should be ashamed Whitney. Get a real job! You obviously know nothing about music.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

So much Pink Floyd hating. It's as depressing as "The Final Cut".

Jill Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

Hey, I'm 41 years old as well (Eric F) and I absolutely HATE Pink Floyd. Hate, hate, hate "Money". I've hated it since the 6th grade; it was stupid then and it's stupid now. But if it makes you feel better I also do not like Britney or any AI singers.

Emma Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

Well, people have reminded me of bands I don't like (The Eagles, Bob Dylan). I have to disagree about Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, and grunge, especially Nirvana and Pearl Jam. I'm sure it has something to do with what I discovered when I was a teenager and listened to these bands for the first time, but I still listen to them on a regular basis. I think my most hated band is The Grateful Dead, though. I dated a guy who thought he was a hippie and loved them...I can't stand the guy or the band any more. As for the posters who say they hate all rap, I think that's a pretty broad statement, and I'm willing to bet they haven't heard ALL rap music. There are some great artists out there and I don't think you can group them all together, it's a pretty big category of music.

Arbitrator Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

I can't stand Bruce Sprinsteen, CCR, Neil Young's voice, or bob Dylan's Voice. Love Pnik Floyd and Jimi Hendrix.

kal Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

cannot stand Bruce. i find his raspy voiced "anthems" to the down trodden pretentious and sappy. and i am from philadelphia so this is blasphemy.

kal Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:07 AM EST

cannot stand Bruce. i think find his raspy voiced "anthems" to the down trodden pretentious and sappy. and i am from philadelphia so this is blasphemy.

CC Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

But they (EW) can't say anything against rap! It's unconstitutional! And not to mention dangerous. Go ahead and write a piece on how Rap sucks.
Nope, not gonna happen.

Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

Rap is grating on the nerves. I'd rather listen to Floyd 24/7 without rest, than be subjected to rap. No real talent needed, just anger and attitude and lots of bling.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

Scott, I'm with you on the rap music! In fact, the closest I come to liking rap is Blondie's little bit during the song "Rapture". Some say that song was the birth of rap, but I'd be willing to bet those that know a lot more than me about it would dispute that claim.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:57 AM EST

Hey, hey, hey, wait a minute! I'm not knocking WANG CHUNG! Hell, I still love the "Mosiac" album from 1986 and their soundtrack to the movie TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. is still pretty cool. But let's be honest here...they didn't exactly set the bar for longevity. They had their moment for a couple of years and then they faded away; just like I predict many of today's bullsh*t pop stars will!

Ryan B Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:47 AM EST

Eric Clapton puts me to sleep.

biggest Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:39 AM EST

I hate Texas, Rolling Stones, Justin Timberlake among many others but these are the folk that make me spew.
P.S. People who think that music was better in the 60's and 70's need to stay away. Grunge Rules!!!

JP Mansoni Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:27 AM EST

Cannot stand:
Beyonce,
Madonna,
Mariah Carrey,
Coldplay,
REM
I also think that what music people like is a reflection of their level of education/sophistication (this mostly comes from the home). At the extremes, I bet most classically-trained musicians love the Beatles and you won't find literature buffs that dislike Dylan. It says something about you to like these two artists.

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:55 PM EST

Cant stand U2 and Bob Dylan and I agree with Justin C. I too am 22 years old and am sick of people saying that "we kids" don't know good music these days. It's extremely annoying!

Tuzo Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:12 PM EST

Kay suday badahay dadalay. Oh sorry...the translation should be "can't stand Bob Dylan".

And the longer the Rolling Stones hang around the more irritating they become.

Silv Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:40 PM EST

Hate the Beatles - though I don't mind their music, I think they're overrated. Hate the Who - just bang on the guitar strings with a wooden spoon, same effect. Hate most rap - music should be sung - hence the term "song" - not shouted, talked, mumbled, etc. Never got Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam, and other 90s grunge. Don't get Dave Mathews. And the only Bruce Springsteen song I ever really liked was the one I hear others consider a sellout to the dance music of the early 80s- Dancing in the Dark.

Scott Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

Rap music. All of it. I'm an open-minded fan of music, but I will forever be baffled at how anyone can listen to rap music. Also, listening to Justin Timberlake makes me want to barf.

Zorro Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

I can see how some people would get all worked up at your criticism of their favourite, hallowed bands. But they should take your comments in context. We live at an accelerated pace compared to 1970. Shorter attention spans. Music has changed - not necessarily for the better - but our tastes still get influenced by the current trends in music. Zeppelin is my favourite band of all times. If I were marooned on an island with one CD? It would be Physical Graffiti...or...any one of their albums. So I'm a true Led Zep fan. But I've criticized them plenty when they deserved it. They even criticize themselves. Jimmy Page has admitted that they could be self-indulgent on-stage, playing solos that went on too long. And do I listen to Pink Floyd today? Not so much. Only when I want to feel severely depressed. Kidding. But they're still one of my faves. Why? Because when I think back to how completely blown away I was when I first heard those songs....today's music isn't nearly as exciting.

CBass Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

Please tell me I'm not the only Bon Jovi hater out here! I cannot listen to Livin' on a Prayer one more time... The only song I may hate more is Hotel California!

Susan Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

U2's early hits like "She moves in mysterious ways" and "With or without you" are great. However, their two latest albums are disappointments,to say the least. "Vertigo" made me nauseous. They're righteous has-beens. At least Bono has a sense of humor&was a crazed guru in "Across the Universe."

Enya has jumped the shark as well. "Amarantine" and "Day without rain" are generic New Age bland pablum. Talk about luck of the Irish!

cb Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

It's nice to know I'm not the only person who can't stand Nirvana!

Also gotta vote for REM, U2, and Madonna.

Julie Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

Some interesting choices on here. I have to go with John Lennon, and raise one Madonna. Both make me nauseous. Also, I would rather listen to the Guess Who then The Who. And at roughly the same age as good old Eric (I'm 43), I am not a huge Pink Floyd fan. Don't hate them, I just don't think they are as brilliant as some others do.

Drew Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

I really hate AC/DC

Drew Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

I really hate AC/DC

Jimmy Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

The period between OK Computer and In Rainbows for Radiohead

Rolling Stones post Some Girls (except for start me up)

The Beatles before Rubber Soul

Rush, Heart, Boston, the eagles

Any music recorded before 1962 besides Jazz

Metallica

Beth Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Here's my deep dark confession: I miss albums. I miss the imperfect sound quality, including the scratches! I miss when artists would record in only one or a few takes. Now the music is so over produced. Everything is so flawless and refined that it has lost some character. Artists who can't sing are stars. Bands don't even sound the same in person. Sigh, I miss my 45's!

Kai- Wed, May 7, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

Led Zeppelin is number one on my list.... The songs just seem to go on and on.

To Eric Friedman Wed, May 7, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Say what you will about Beyonce, Brtiney Spears etc...BUT ILL BE DAMNED IF I SIT HERE AND LET YOU MAKE DISPARAGING REMARKS ABOUT WANG CHUNG!!
Eric - everybody wants to have fun tonight, everybody wants to Wang Chung tonight. The sooner you realize that, the better.

VERONICA D Wed, May 7, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

I can not stand the Beatles later work and prefer the "I wanna hold your hand" period. I hate, hate Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band album.

t-bone Wed, May 7, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

whitney, i 100% agree with you about pink floyd! yuck. same goes for the eagles and jimmy buffet.

Zod Wed, May 7, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

A couple more...
The Eagles - I think I hate them more than the Stones
"Come on, man. I had a rough night and I hate the fn' Eagles, man!"
Jeffrey 'The Dude' Lebowski
Aerosmith stinks too

Sheena Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

I HATE Elvis and most of the Beatles songs, Paul McCartney sucks, Bob Dylan is awful, And I especially hate Justin Timberlake and all gangsta rap, New Kids on the Block drove me crazy-how bad they where, Beyonce sucks, Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson can't sing for s--t, Coldplay is a joke, And this dork David A on AI is so freaking boring I can't stand it!

Zod Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

I always felt there was something wrong with me for not liking the Rolling Stones. I’ve always made serious attempts to get into them but could never do it. Finally, after years of trying I finally said to myself “ I DON’T LIKE THEM”. I’ve lived a better life ever since.

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Eric says "...irresistable streak of sadistic barbarism" -- that's as pretentious as a lyric from U2!

TOM Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

I lived through the grunge scene and always felt that Nirvana was overrated and Pearl Jam was always better.

Jen Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

FM I like what you're saying. I played Pearl Jam's CD till it died, and Nirvana, Temple of the Dog, STP, etc, they conjure up great memories, and that's what music's all about to me.

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

I never got the popularity of Heart.

lec Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

AC/DC. Can't take it. Any of it. Every single time they come on I think of Angus Young in that kilt and it turns my stomach. Oh, and like many here that have voiced their opinion (on a variety of different bands/singers), I think every single one of their songs sounds the same. And don't even get me started on that VOICE!

AEVJ Wed, May 7, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

Rush. I can't take even a second of Geddy Lee's annoying squawk. And Rush fans are SOOOOO ANNOYING!!!

donna Wed, May 7, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

I'm with all of you on Pink Floyd. Hate them, and will change the radio station if their music is playing. Also don't like Dylan, the Eagles and Genesis (Phil Collins version). I am currently indifferent to the Rolling Stones; early stuff was great, after Exile on Main Street they lost me. IMO, the R&RHOF will be having a really tough time finding inductees pretty soon. Madonna was a bit of a reach for me!

FM Wed, May 7, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

For everyone who says they dont 'get' Nirvana or the Grunge scene in whole, it's becuase you didnt live it.
What made Grunge great is the time it arrived. For ten years prior the music scene had devolved into bubble-gum easy listening and cheesy power-ballads. It was Fake in every way.
Grunge came in and brought back a sense of reality, of commitment and honesty that the music scene had lacked for years.
It may not have been technically proficient, but it felt Real, and that is what made it great.
The reason so many people are nostalgic for it (and other forms of 'classic' rock) is because of the lack of sincerity in popular music.
Of course, there's always some good stuff around if you look hard enough, but put on that top-40 station and listen to it and ask yourself how accuratly what they're singing about reflects your life.
For a few short years in the early 90's it felt like there were musicians who actually understood and represented what was real.
/end Rant

Schneid Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I'm with you on Pink Floyd. I hate this band beyond reason.

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

aaa, HA HA HA HA HA!!! I have only one child, and unless you're a two and a half year-old boy, you can put your sick feeling to rest.

You know, when I was a kid, I had to listen to my father's DOO-WOP music on the radio! I'm telling you, not only did this man know the lyrics to every song played, but he could name you the flipside song of the original record at the time of its release.

Now that I'm older, I still don't like doo-wop, but I can appreciated what that music must have meant to him as a teenager of the '50s.

aaa Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

I have a sick feeling that 'Eric Friedman' is my father posting in disguise.

Martha Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

It is fairly amusing to watch everyone get upset as others say they don't like their favorite bands. Who cares? *You* still like them - isn't that what matters? But Jk, I couldn't pass up your comment about classical music/opera. I hope you'll give the former another try at some point and realize how amazing it is (Beethoven is a good start for the uninitiated) but if you still don't like it, hey, you're entitled.

a Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

oh yeah! and to go off the classic rock subject... I'm sorry but even though I am a child of the 80s and grew up on the grunge of Seattle (knew Kurt Cobain, etc) I REALLY don't get Sonic Youth... OK blast away.

a Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

Jerry Garcia is without a doubt the WORST lead guitarist in history. AUGH! Bob Dylan gives me a headache... literally - I can't listen to his music. And the ONLY Pink Floyd I can listen to is DSOTM... and that infrequently...

Jayel Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

Led Zeppelin. Can't stand them. Can't listen to a single one of their songs all the way through. This was a problem in high school when every boy I even sort of liked thought they were gods. Now with the advent of "only songs you like!" internet radio, it's an even weirder problem. Apparently my other classic rock likes make it genetically, biologically, and psychologically impossible for me to dislike Led Zeppelin - every computer model known to geek-kind calculates me as a fan. Except I'm not. Can't stand them.
I also can't stand AC/DC, but that doesn't seem as odd to me, somehow. Oh, and Coldplay - can someone younger and more sensitive please explain Coldplay? All their songs sounds like "Clocks," and "Clocks" sounds like a test pattern - one chord endlessly repeating until the brain of listener explodes. Which is fine if you're the Ramones and it's on purpose, but Coldplay, like Pink Floyd, are supposed to be deep, right?

SWB Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

I agree on pink floyd being intolerable and I would add the greatful dead. Every song sounds the same.

Jk Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who just couldn't stand Bob Dylan.

99% of all classical/opera music makes my head hurt.

AC/DC always sounded like screeching to me, but most of the big music successes I can't stand are more modern, like the Smashing Pumpkins, Fantasia, Hilary Duff, and all that reggae-infused hip-hop that's huge right now. Oh, and the new Justin Timberlake, which is weird, because a couple of years ago I really liked NSync.

I still don't understand how someone could hate all the Beatles stuff. There's so much different types of it. It's like saying you hate to eat food.

AMW Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

Pink Floyd LITERALLY makes my mother nauseated. She gets physically ill when she hears them. It has something to do with the fact that she was pregnant when she first heard them.

Kimberly Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

Madonna. I CAN NOT STAND HER.

Kimberly Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

Madonna. I CAN NOT STAND HER.

newshound23 Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

OH I forgot-anyone contemporary. Who the heck are the Jonas Brothers and why, pray God, is Miley Cyrus famous? (that brings up another loathsome figure-her father)

newshound23 Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

ZZ Top. Every time they come on the radio, especially that insipid Legs song, it's changed. And Whitney Houston. Whiney, and she makes my dog cry. And, honestly, the Beatles (as a group), do nothing for me. But I'll take McCartney and Harrison solo.

Lynny Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

"I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!" Calmate, people. I will say that I used to not get the Pink Floyd thing, but as I have gotten older, I do like them more. Not sure what is different.

Adam Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

I don't get the attraction to Rush. Prog Rock was the worst thing that happened to the Rock genre. And while were on the topic of all things Canadian, Nickelback's success just confuses me. They are fortunate that most teenagers are content to listen to whatever the radio stations play.

Chuck Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

So many...

The Beach Boys, the Kinks, KISS, (yes) Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel Era Genesis, most solo Beatles, the Dead, post-Bill Berry REM, Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, Mariah Carey, Usher, Death Row Tupac...

MM Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

Some artists I've never been able to get into: Radiohead, Madonna, and Prince.

P.S. Why are people so angry about this topic? People can like different music, it's okay!

Craig Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

I don't know if Jethro Tull can be considered a "seminal" band, but I never understood the fascination with them. When I was a college freshman in 1983, "Aqualung" was the album of choice on my dorm floor and I could never stand it. There was a time when I actively disliked Pink Floyd, too, but I got over it, and though my girlfriend cannot stand Rush, they remain one of my favorites

Grace Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

Dear Lord, don't even get me started on that overrated hack known as Bob Dylan. Whoever told the man that he could carry a tune should be beaten (preferably in the ears).

Mae Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Shakira
Clay Aiken
Beyonce
The Rolling Stones
Journey

Matt Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

I'm just going to add "Eric Friedmann" to the list under the general "things I cannot stand"

DK Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Coldplay, the Rolling Stones, the Dave Matthews Band, and Phil Collings. Each revered and respected and (in some cases) rabidly followed.... each a complete mystery to me.

Elaine Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

The Beatles

Kevin Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:59 AM EST

To the ever-present Eric Friedman, the only thing that the success of the Eagles Greatest Hits album says is that a LOT of people have bad taste in music. The Eagles were the Hootie and the Blowfish of their time. Don't go by Billboard lists, go by influence. Who the heck was inspired by the Eagles? NO ONE. Just sayin'. Otherwise, I pretty much like/love every major "classic rock" act (including Pink Floyd and Rush) but I do hate me some Steely Dan (even more so than the Eagles), a band that makes me feel like I need to take a bath.

BenG Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

Where to begin? There are SO many. I think Madonna's constant reinvention is tragic and plain sad, especially since her music is carbon copied from kids 1/3 of her age. Miley Cyrus is plain annoying, as is her "alter ego." Chad Kroeger makes me cringe, nuff' said. As a jazz performer, I can't understand, for the life of me, the popularity of Michael Buble, and his sense of self-importance despite his lack of charisma or extraordinary talent is astounding. I confess, I like 1 or 2 songs each by Mariah, Chris Brown, John Mayer, and U2 but I'd NEVER buy any of their albums. And, here's the kicker...Elvis and Johnny Cash...I just don't get them. Yes, I recognize that they are legends of the American music songbook and have shaped and influenced the careers of thousands of musicians but I can't make it through "Love Me Tender" or ANY Cash songs. My loss, or so I'm told.

Shelly Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

Can't stand Beyonce's voice. Major confusion over The Rolling Stones and Madonna. If those 3 disappeared forever I'd be fine.

CMU Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

Eric, get a life. You really are pretentious. And that's coming from someone who is pretentious herself, so I should know.
Anyway, mine would be the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They fill me with rage every time I hear them. I have to change the station as fast as possible when they come on. I hate his voice and the way they sound. I hate their songs. So many people are like, "You don't like the RHCPs?!" as if there's good cause for their outrage. It's not like I said I didn't like the Beatles (I do. A lot.).

Chris Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

Jack Johnson! Every song the same and I just can't take it. "Boring and sleep inducing".

MAS Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

I must add to the growing chorus of those who have named Led Zeppelin. I can usually make it about halfway through one of their songs, but the minute the screeching begins, I have to change the station. Other than the drumming, I can't figure out why people like this overrated band. Or Dave Matthews Band - they suck too.

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Oh man, this all just puts such a great big smile on my face! I must have an irresistable streak of sadistic barbarism in me that enjoys intentionally pissing younger people off! It's just so easy sometimes!

Well now, if you'll all excuse me, I have to go listen to Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and piss on Britney Spears' picture.

Bye-bye!

gal who's 34 Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

Eric, the "whatevs" was INTENTIONAL, duh. You act as though being a 41-yr-old snob gives you the right to insult the intelligence and taste of everyone 35 and under, so I was living up to your expectations. Sarcasm is lost on pompous blowhards, though. Dude!

Swimming in a fishbowl Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

I can't help it. I adore Pink Floyd. And Zeppelin. And Jethro Tull.

I hate all the breathy, over-produced dreck that passes for music lately (whether or not it's seminal). Mariah, Britney, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, I'm talking to you.

And don't tell anyone, but I never liked the Beatles, or the Eagles, or, for that matter, Elvis.

Voices like Bob Dylan and Neil Young are not pretty, but at least they are saying something (other than "gimme more" and "touch my body").

Celimene Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

I don't know. Mr. Friedmann does have a point about the special, soul-crushing charms of Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. But just because there are some acts that we just can't stand doesn't mean we're not appreciative of other acts from before the bubble gum era. For example, I hate the Stones but I loves me some The Who. Bob Dylan makes me want to maim small children, but I'll gladly put on some Velvet Underground or Zep. So complaining doesn't mean that the people here are devoid of taste.

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

Something else to consider, folks...there is a grave difference between being "the hottest pop star of today" and becoming LEGENDARY. Fifty years from now, I seriously doubt the world will acknowledge or care about artists like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake or Beyonce. They will fade away into oblivion like Debbie Gibson, Tiffany and groups like DeBarge and Wang Chung. It's the artists like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Led-Zeppelin, The Eagles, Steely Dan and yes, even Madonna who will be remembered for music that made an everlasting mark on our world; music that made some kind of difference.

denny Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

I don't understand why everything Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan have coughed up since their heyday (particularly from the 90s onward) has been touted as a work of genius. Perhaps they used to be great, but honestly, their more recent work has put that greatness into serious doubt.

I have never understood why the Rolling Stones are such a huge deal. Sure they have some good songs, but, so do lots of other bands of that era.

And can someone please explain to me why a rock band as pretentious as Radiohead is so popular?

CM Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

what a great topic. For me, it's Jimmy Buffet, the Grateful Dead (I don't even know if it's spelled like that), Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Nirvana.

And um...Eric Freidman? You need to get over yourself. While I myself am a Pink Floyd fan, it doesn't mean anyone under the age of 35 is an idiot b/c they don't agree. Just like the people here who don't like U2 aren't idiots, even though they're one of my favorites. Seriously, get over it. You're showing your age and not in a good way.

For everyone else saying the canons they could never get into are talentless? Get over yourselves. I may not "get" the bands above, but I won't go so far as to say they're talentless or irrelevant. Open the crusted over window to your minds just a little bit...

Marc Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

Wow..I cant believe disrespect for some amazing bands on these lists. I LOVE Pink Floyd but I guess how I can see how people wouldnt "get" them. Your loss. But Led Zeppelin??? Some of you should ashamed of yourselves.

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

CS, sorry, can't calm down. The minute EW attacked DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, my blood started to boil! Besides, it's my birthday! I gotta do SOMETHING to have a little fun in the middle of the day!

CS Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

"Money get back. I'm alright, Jack. Keep your hands off my stack. New car, caviar, four-star daydream, think I'll buy me a football team"

Obviously Pink Floyd. I think starting off the quote with the song name 'Money' kind of gave it away. By the way, this guy might wanna calm down.

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

U2, totally...!!
Bono! Save the world..but please stop singing. Please. It WILL kill the whales.

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

I third Madonna. Although, even today, I still wouldn't kick her out of my bed! The best thing about her career that I ever enjoyed was her infamous SEX book in 1992!

Saybo Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

I don't like The Beatles or Bob Dylan. I'd be an idiot not to realize how important they are to rock/pop music, but I just don't enjoy them.

Rachel Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

I second Madonna.

brontebrat Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

Jimmy Buffett. The worst kind of fake Caribbean tourist dreck, like a Mai Tai enjoyed by a Holiday Inn pool in Cleveland. The worst part? He can buy and sell all of us 100 times over...

RTA Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:49 AM EST

Madonna. There. I said it.

Sara Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

Pink Floyd - my boyfriend took me to see Roger Waters and I was bored out of my mind, although the floating pig was cool. And I like the movie The Wall, mostly because of the trippy visuals.
Also, Nirvana. Just doesn't do it for me. Oh and Led Zeppelin, or maybe I just really really hate Stairway to Heaven. So frigging boring.

Kerri Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:46 AM EST

I know that many many people worship at the guitar altar of Jimi Hendrix, but I just think he sounds like a hot mess, especially on "The Star Spangled Banner."

tomf Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

I've always hated Bon Jovi. Not one song of their would I ever call "classic." Jon Bon Jovi pales to any lead singer of a classic band. (poser)

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

Sara, so I suppose rock and rolling all night and partying every day is out of the question?

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Oh yeah, here's another fact: one of the top grossing (if not THE top grossing) concert tours of 2007 was THE POLICE! Money, money, money!

"Money get back. I'm alright, Jack. Keep your hands off my stack. New car, caviar, four-star daydream, think I'll buy me a football team"

Can any of you "American Idol" lovers figure out what that's from???

Dixie Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:42 AM EST

I've hated Jethro Tull since I was a tiny sprout. I used to hate Marshall Tucker Band as well, but developed a grudging tolerance for them when faced with a choice between the two on a road trip.
I've also horrified countless people with the declaration that I like the Stones way more than the Beatles (though I give the Fab Four props for knowing when to call it a day).
I also hate bands who replace dead singers and guitarists (read: Skynyrd), and I don't like Dylan unless somebody's covering him.

Cory Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

I hate hate HATE Bruce Springsteen. Seriously, whenever someone I know listens to him, or when one of his songs pops up on the radio, I pretty much want to scream and smash things. The worst part is that I can't really put my finger on why I don't like him, I just know that I don't.

sara Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

I can't stand KISS

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

Oh, by the way, to all those who don't like the Eagles, just want to point out that on December 7, 1999, the Recording Industry of America awarded THEIR GREATEST HITS (1971-1975) as the best selling album of the 20th Century! Oh, how money does talk!

Los Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

C'mon, people lets keep it friendly. We're voicing what bands we hate- not what types of people we hate.

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:29 AM EST

Oops...PRETENTIOUS!

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:29 AM EST

gal34, what can you possibly say to someone who actually says "whatevs". My 2 year-old son uses better English. Oh yeah, and he loves the Stones, too!

Pretentios?? Moi???

Ryan Walter Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

I'm glad someone else mentioned Steely Dan. They are horrible. But for me, the one band everyone loves that I don't is The Steve Miller Band. Steve Miller sucks, plain and simple.

Dana Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

I can't stand Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix or the Stones

Los Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:22 AM EST

Look, I can understand why people dug Bon Jovi back in the 80's. You know why? BECAUSE IT WAS THE 80's. This is the same time when bands like Warrant and Stryper could have been popular (If either of those band names doesn't ring a bell, bless your heart). But WHY do people still dig these guys? And don't give me this 'Slippery When Wet was a good album' crap- more like Nauseating When Played. Their music was corny then and even more so now. Hands down the most annoying thing to ever come out of Jersey.

a gal who's 34 Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

Mr Friedman, shove it up yours, why don't you. Could you be any more of a pretentious arse? You remind me of a 20-something college art student who thinks he knows everything and everyone else is an idiot. (And note that I'm not saying all 20-something college art students are like that). Whatevs.

Nancy Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:17 AM EST

Dave Matthews Band. I just don't get it, and not interested enough to try.

Emily Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:12 AM EST

I hate U2.

NineDaves Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:09 AM EST

yey! i hate bob dylan too!

Frances Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:06 AM EST

I am so glad I am not the only one who can't stand Bob Dylan. I get yelled at all the time for not appreciating his music. Poet, ok, I'll give you that. But musically, he doesn't do it for me. I also get looks of horror when I say I don't think Prince is that big of a deal. I'm sorry, he just doesn't do it for me. Oh, and while I'm at it, I can't stand the Rolling Stones (except the song Paint it Black). Mick Jagger just annoys me. Wow, this feels great!!!

Allison Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

Led Zeppelin and Coldplay both make me kinda want to yarp. In totally different ways, of course.

Another Jen Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

I don't like U2. Ugh. Blech. My boyfriend can't stand the Beatles, or even any covers of their songs. But then, he really likes Iron Maiden, and I think they're awful.

lk Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

while i do enjoy some of their songs..i dont entirely get why the beatles have had such a profound influence on music since their demise (or during their fame) ...i cant stand panic at the disco to begin with and i dont get why theyve blatantly copied the beatles, i mean i know there arent any original thoughts left in this world but i hate how "artists" my age are trying to regurgitate music that was way before their birth

Kevin Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

So many fools here on this website today. Floyd RULES! The Eagles, Bob Seger, Van Halen, Lynrd Skynrd, Bon Jovi, Steely Dan, and Dave Matthews on the other hand all s*ck in ways that somehow outs*ck even the s*ckiest American Idol contestant. (I use the * because for some reason EW tends to censor me when I use the word suck).

Dtom Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:41 AM EST

It wouldn't be the Popwatch comments section without a painfully pretentious comment (or two) from Eric Friedmann. Good on ya, old man!

Jon Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST

I love that rock 'n' roll. Yes I do. Mmm hmmm. But I can't stand Led Zeppelin. Meandering, hook-less riffs with nails-on-chalkboard screeching on top. Good drummer, though.

Meg Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:32 AM EST

I forgot to mention my utter hatred for Lou Reed, Jethro Tull, and Blue Oyster Cult.Supertramp also sucks.

Lisa Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

I'm with many of you on the Pink Floyd, Rush, and Dave Matthews.

Also, I think I may be the only Black woman in America who never liked Luther Vandross' music (RIP)

Lex Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

The Eagles
Fleetwood Mac
Rush
Grateful Dead
Pink Floyd
Steely Dan
U2 (they were good before mid-90s)
Sheryl Crow (how is she suddenly revered as "classic rock"? Dating Eric Clapton doesn't mean she's part of that group, sorry.)

capp Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:28 AM EST

I used to live in southern Alabama, and practically everyone around is a 'parrothead' - fan of Jimmy Buffett. I can't stand his music, but it usually gets stuck in my head because it's been around so long!

Meg Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:26 AM EST

Bob Dylan is quite possibly the worst "singer" on the planet. He may be a lyrical genius, but for gods sake let someone else sing.

orville Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

While there are songs from all that I like somewhat and can tolerate, I've never understood the massive idolization of Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Michael Jackson. And while I love, love, love Led Zep, I can't stand the song so many worship from them, Stairway to Heaven.

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:21 AM EST

Hey, all you kids, you wanna hear some music that you'll REALLY hate??? Here are some progressive rock bands that I absolutely love, but will probably turn off all of you American-Idol-worshippers:

- King Crimson
- Emerson, Lake & Palmer
- Utopia
- Yes (1970's material)
- Genesis (with Peter Gabriel)

Oh, yes, just listen to this music and you'll know the meaning of the word PAIN (because you're all too young to appreciate it!).

Aggie Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:13 AM EST

I never got the fascination with Michael Jackson, his music and voice just grate on me. I can't stand any of the RnB/diva warblers who think that vast amounts of vocal gymnastics equals pleasant listening. Bring back the old style rhythm and blues. Radiohead haven't appealed to me since The Bends and U2 don't float my boat either.
I find I'm getting increasingly grumpy with modern chart stuff. It all seems to be very formulaic and samey. No wonder I feel the urge to sink into some classic rock sometimes.

JRL Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:12 AM EST

I'll add my voice to the votes against Nirvana. I hated grunge when it was huge and everyone in my high school seemed to be decked out in Doc Martins and flannel. And I still hate it. The continued popularity of Green Day is also perplexing.

Lammie Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:03 AM EST

I cannot stand Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Fleetwood Mac. This is why I have an iPod hooked up in my car and no longer have to listen to the radio. (My area only seems to have oldies stations.)

Mack Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:01 AM EST

1. Grateful Dead (no amount of drugs make them good)
2. Pink Floyd (Pretentious art rock that really should be called dinasaur sleeping music)
3. Bob Dylan (what is he saying...better uses for that nose)
4. Bruce Springsteen (when is he going to get some Miralax)
5. REO Speedwagon (wedding favorite enought said)
6. Rush (I just do not get this at all)
7. Pearl Jam (Get over yourself)
8. Radiohead/Coldplay (Boring english guys)
9. Mariah Carrey - (get them girl some clothes and duct tape)
10. There is this one rap guy I want to put down but I am afraid...He tends to take stuff to personally....

AHHHHH To get this off my chest has been great....

Winona Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

I don't really like Nirvana. Kurt Cobain was definitely not the voice of my generation, thankyouverymuch. And I want to slap the people who compare him to John Lennon (as if an early death automatically makes you a talented musician and songwriter as opposed to a self-centered idiot who left behind a wife and baby girl).

Jen Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

I don't enjoy Pink Floyd either. And now "The Wall" is stuck in my head at the mention of their name. Thanks a lot, PopWatch.

Besides Pink Floyd, I can't get into:
Metallica
Smashing Pumpkins (with the exception of "1979")
Pearl Jam
Dave Matthews Band- HUGE in my hometown and I have no idea why

Hey Eric Friedman Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

I agree with you and I get ticked at people saying stupid things about Floyd, the Beatles, Dylan etc. But chill. After all this is a discussion about hating music. Let them have their moment of loathing. In the end they can't take away from these artist's status of greatness.

jen Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:53 AM EST

I hate, hate, hate Nirvana. I think that they are the worst band ever and turn the channel anytime I hear them. I also hate anything that Ozzy puts his hand to. OVERRATED

Hey tom Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:50 AM EST

The whole point of this discussion is to talk about musicians you don't particularly enjoy.

Jennifer Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:49 AM EST

I get tired of the Beach Boys being held up as so innovative and the one dude always being called a "genius." Yeah, they made some nice harmonies, but BFD. Also can't stand Joni Mitchell's voice.

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:49 AM EST

I've turned 41 years old today, and as a little birthday present to myself, I'm going to say this to all of you people under the age of 35...GET A F*CKIN' CLUE!!! You've all spent too much time being exposed to bubble-gum pop garbage delivered to you by the likes of trashy whores like Britney Spears and every contestant of "American Idol" you choose to put on such a worthless pedestal, that you don't even have a fraction of the brain that it takes to recognize a masterpiece album like Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON! I will not waste my time arguing the point any further. None of you are worth it!

Whitney, stick to talking about today's pop garbage and leave the legendary music to those on staff who are older than you!

By the way, I always hated Guns & Roses! Can't stand the sound of Axel Rose's voice!

jon Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:48 AM EST

There are a couple of bands that I absolutely cannot take.

1. pearl jam. God good in heaven Eddie is a no talent hack, all of his music sounds exactly the same.

2. The beatles. Honestly I think the reason I hate them is because of the fact that people think they are the end all to be all.

With that said I think "The Cure" is the most underrated bands ever. Sure the 90's have not been great to them but I would put ANY of their albums against any "current" crap and still listen to them every time. And the fact that they haven't made it into the Rock and Roll hall of fame and madonna has is a frigging travesty.

Celimene Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:21 AM EST

I don't get why people think the Rolling Stones are canon, and I think U2 are massively overrated. But I judge people who try to tell me that Bob Dylan is the greatest artist of all time. It's not that I'm thick and don't get the lyrics... I just. Don't. Care. Horrible voice + self-indulgent rambling = fail.

mefree Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:08 AM EST

Dave Matthews Band
Radiohead

Bah Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:05 AM EST

I HATE Pink Floyd. They are one of those bands that everyone thinks they're supposed to like (but no actually does) so they do. They are terrible.

janeb Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:04 AM EST

The Greatful Dead. I actually feel physically ill when I hear them, although I'm not exactly sure why.

Andrea Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:03 AM EST

Well, I won`t go into how many of todays bands I can't stand (since no one in their right mind would call Nickelback seminal) but if I had to list my top three they'd be:

1. The Rolling Stones.
2. Bob Dylan.
3. Pink Floyd

tom Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:45 AM EST

Jezus! Get a life you bunch of pathetic music haters. Nothing constructive at all. What about mentioning what you do think is good.

UGH Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:44 AM EST

I hate the way they give out some of the 'Living Legend' titles. Like Aretha Franklin. Yeah, she's good, but then when she puts her diva on and starts the caterwauling... ugh. And people all starry eyed like she's royalty ...sorry, I just don't get it.

Vinder Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:28 AM EST

Bob Dylan.
and 90% of Radiohead.

Susan Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:21 AM EST

Yay! Confessional time! Here are my contributions-
1)Nirvana-Yes,they're influential. Yes,they kickstarted grunge/the Seattle sound. But I can't stand Kurt Cobain's voice. Like nails on a chalkboard.
2)The Rolling Stones- Obnoxiousness incarnate. How have they lasted this long? They're important to rock n'roll, can't stand their music.
3)Dave Matthews Band- They've had some okay songs;there are some good instrumentals. Still,Dave Matthews SHOULDN'T SING! He's the male Mariah Carey with his braying style. He sounds like his voice is still breaking;plus,he mumbles. Thankfully,he signs talented musicians to his label like Rodrigo y Gabriela and Vusi Mahlasela. He finds musicians better than him. No wonder is Vusi is called The Voice in South Africa!

tad Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:51 PM EST

I'll just come out and say it. I just don't like the Beatles and never have. They have a couple of good songs but other than that, they just sound annoying and I just have never figured out why they are so famous and well-regarded. I also don't get all the love for Elvis, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Nirvana and Neil Diamond. I also cannot stand Mariah Carey or Christina Aguilera. I have very eclectic music tastes but have never understood these artists' popularity!! Also, switching genres to country, I really do not understand why Dwight Youkam, Alan Jackson and Brad Paisley are so famous. Their voices just really annoy me for some reason. Also, Trisha Yearwood but she is not around that much anymore, thanksfully!! If anyone could explain these artists' appeal to me, I would greatly appreciate it!!

William Wright Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:26 PM EST

pink floyd is beyond overrated

as is led zepplin

and black sabbath

Bee Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:25 PM EST

I have to agree about Pink Floyd. It puts me into a coma immediately. Some of the bands or artists that people listed are some artists that I really like or admire, but I understand that sometimes you just "had to be there". My first concert was The Police and I was just obsessed with them. Now I just can't listen to it anymore. REM defined a time in my life, but some music just doesn't grow with you or work for a new generation.

MD Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

Ohh so many answers to a great question.
Dave Matthews Band-huh????? He sings w/marbles in his mouth. And the songs all do sound the same.
Greatful Dead not even if I were lit up to the high heavens would I get this band and following them everywhere nope. The tie dye I can live with.
REM- I was done after Radio Free Europe my sister thinks I am communist for disliking then. Overhyped "indie rock" - Ohh I hate that 'label' too.
Sheryl Crowe????

Lpaz Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

Oh and I forgot Nirvana. I mean, in the right mood, I might be able to stand them. MIGHT. But really all they do is scream and warble and play waaaaay too distorted. And gosh, so grumpy.
Some product of the 90s I am.

Layla Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:16 PM EST

Well, I for one love Pink Floyd and all the other great classic bands from the 60's - 70's, especially Led Zeppelin. Today's music pales in comparison - there's nothing unique or new, no risk taking. It all sounds the same. If you like classic rock you can visit me at Layla's Classic Rock Faves. I also agree with KLF above me - Mariah Carey makes me feel ill.

Caitlin Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:14 PM EST

I just do not see what the big damn deal is about Dave Matthews Band. I mean, they're not bad..but why does everyone lose their minds at the mere mention of them? Seriously, they aren't THAT cool.

You cannot imagine how happy it makes me to see that I'm not the only one who can't stand these bands. Pearl Jam... never got it (and I hear that damn, never-ending Eddie Vedder song almost everyday while driving. Ugh.) Soundgarden to some extent. Pink Floyd- totally agree. Dave Matthews Band- seriously? Overrated college rock. The Eagles because my parents, especially my dad, listen to it on repeat nonstop and always have. Also, U2. I never really got how anyone thought they were the greatest band ever. Staying power translates to greatness for some, I guess. I haven't read all the comments, but I'd like to make this contribution:
Blink-182. Too juvenile. And the vocals are obnoxious. And they're more pop-punk than anyone will admit.
So glad to get that off my chest.

SR Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:44 PM EST

Michael Jackson. In 1982/83 Thriller was THE album. Leather and gloves were everywhere. I resisted the MJ cult and was teased unmercifully. I still can't stand any of his songs and don't understand why so many artists find that album inspirational and influential.
Motley Crue. I never got it. I guess I was just a Guns N' Roses gal. If I hear the overplayed Smokin in the Boys Room one more time, I think I am going to vomit.

Lynny Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:43 PM EST

Um, make the The DOORS

Nee Nee Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:42 PM EST

I don't get The Rolling Stones. Are they good musicians or not? I would never know because the music is overshadowed by Mick and that other guy's huge egos. And I'm of the belief that a person would have to be on serious drugs to appreciate The Grateful Dead. Since I don't do drugs, their music just makes me cringe. And the fact that all of my friends seem to worship Dave Matthews bugs me to no end. I do think he's a great musician, but all of his music sounds the same, and there are no catchy hooks. It's overwhelming and annoying.
I have 2 words for one big group of "legendary" bands I absolutely can't stand: HAIR METAL. Why? I never understood why...
What is all this grunge hate? It hurts my heart that so many don't appreciate that great, and revolutionary time in music! The early 90's make me ecstatically happy.

stephanie Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:42 PM EST

-pearl jam (HATE THEM)
-nirvana (what's the BFD. seriously)
-pink floyd
-lou reed

basically, any band/artist my brother was obsessed with bore me to death. I don't see the good in any of these bands-- I'm sure they were important, yes (with the exception of pearl jam.. d-bags) but their music? eh.

Lynny Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:42 PM EST

The Dorrs- now I do enjoy some of their catchier songs, but if you really listen to the "poetry" it borders on ridiculous and pompous. It simply "tries too hard" for me. I thnk it was said best by Lester Bangs in "Almost Famous" - "The Doors? Jim Morrison? He's a drunken buffoon posing as a poet." (man that is a lot of quotation marks!)

i gotta say Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:28 PM EST

i 110% disagree with your analysis of pink floyd. i understand it's not for everyone, but i personally think they are the greatest band in the history of music. they did more innovative stuff before anyone else was doing it, and it is NOT just appealing to stoners. (never smoked a day in my life). their entire repertoire is beyond phenomenal.

that being said...most overrated hyped up band in my opinion? radiohead. they get credit for being original and innovative by basically doing what pink floyd paved the way for.

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

Wohoo I second the REM vote - I don't get the appeal - nor do I get Dave Matthews - if I ever hear Ants Marching again I may never recover.

Nix Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

I think a lot of resentment builds up when people feel certain artwork is Important and they Must Like It or else they're idiots. I'm glad to see more than a few people here drawing the distinction between "I appreciate the artistic achievement" and "I like it". There's a lot of stuff I appreciate critically I do not actually enjoy.

And then there's Dave Matthews. Hey, I like several songs from their heyday, but his particular way of mumblechewing words combined with his vocal timbre, grates on me. It's hard to like a band when its lead singer has a voice you can't stand.

Ben Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:55 PM EST

I hardly consider Mariah "seminal" unless we're talking about the various contributions made into Mimi...

JJ Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

Egad! What is with all the bagging on Rush? Moving Pictures is one of the greatest albums of all time. You people must have been dropped on your heads.

Laurie Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

R.E.M.! I'd write it a thousand times if I had the space. Oh, and Nirvana, too.

Stephanie T. Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

Most of the female R&B singers (from the 80's and now )except for Anita Baker)are really overrated. I mean Mariah, Whitney? Will they ever compare to Tina, Gladys, or Aretha?

And I don't get Avril Lavigne. I mean what exactly is she trying to go for? She sings pop-punk yet her over-use of black eyeliner makes her look goth?! Choose already!

Em Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:11 PM EST

I must say, I love Pink Floyd. Something that gets me in trouble with others is my unadulterated hatred of the Rolling Stones. I can't think of a single song I like. And Don't get me started on the Doors, one of the worst bands EVER!

idigress Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

Pearl Jam
Bob Dylan
Bruce Springsteen
Neil Diamond
Melissa Etheridge

Pamela Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

Oh, I am so pleased that I am not alone (Hi KLF, Paige and anonymous - actually anonymous you could have stated a name since you are among friends now) with my dislike for Mariah Carey's tortured cat warblings. And can I also add in Celine Dion? I know neither is an overstuffed rock legend, but hey.

As for Pink Floyd, I bought Dark Side of the Moon only because everyone else had a copy. Although there was some great Floyd stuff(esp, the early Sid Barrett stuff), they fell into the trap of pretentious rock stuffiness, never to grace my record player, CD player, then IPod again. Long may it last.

Jay Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

I second Dave Matthews and Bruce Springsteen (the voice of the people? really??) Also, no one has said Madonna yet, and I'd like to put her out there. She's in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame??? I know she's a great business-lady and there is much to respect, but for my money, she has only done one compelling album (Ray of Light). I don't get her at all.

Sasha Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:58 PM EST

Oh my god... Gotta second the many votes for the Eagles. Ugh.

Bridget Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:42 PM EST

Here's another vote for the Police, Radiohead, and the Eagles. Every time I hear the song "Desperado" I can't even keep a straight face, though I'm sure that even right now, some cowboy is earnestly singing it to his lady friend (or vice versa).

Bridget Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

Put me down for a Justin Timberlake hater, too (and he's definitely not seminal, he just sucks this much). I just don't get the big deal about him; his songs aren't even that good, and he's just an annoying guy in general.

Also, Dave Matthews just sucks. It's like he's the Bob Dylan to the Abercrombie and Fitch set (and that's not a compliment, and probably an insult to Bob Dylan). And a ton of people I know love DM, and go and see his concert every summer. Which is totally overpriced and sucky.

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

As with a lot of people, it's nice to see that I'm not the only person that can't stand Pearl Jam; every song is just mumbly droning. I think the point when I started to actually dislike them was when they put on a concert in support of Ralph Nader in 2000. Ralph Nader!!!

Houstonian Jen in DC Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:24 PM EST

By the way, I know Justin Timberlake is not seminal, but it felt like as good a time as any to express my feelings.

Houstonian Jen in DC Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

1. Elvis Presley, I mean I get it, but I JUST DON'T GET IT. Sorry. By the way, Graceland = what happens when you have lots of money and do lots of drugs.

2. Justin Timberlake: I've really try to get into him, but every time I hear a song, I just think, "It was better when it was done by Prince/Michael Jackson/Usher". But, he is a smart man to align himself with Timbaland, Neptunes, etc.

Wow, apparently I don't like the blue-eyed soul men (We're still cool, Robin Thicke!)

atskooc Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

never been a fan of (in no particular order):
1--pink floyd (though the "wizard of oz" thing is pretty cool)
2--led zeppelin
3--grateful dead
4--pearl jam
5--soundgarden
6--jimi hendrix
7--david bowie
8--black sabbath
9--fleetwood mac
10--phish

aaa Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:15 PM EST

Hello...The Eagles! Hotel California is easily the most overrated song ever. Also agree with the hate for Pink Floyd, Rush, and Jimmy Buffett.

emily Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

Rush - not my cup of tea. all their songs sound the same to me. And i am one who picks Pink Floyd over Led Zep and Rolling Stones over the Beatles. i love my music and i am picky about it.

Martha Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

Sorry, should read "particularly certain hipster douchebags."

Martha Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

By the way, Justin C., we Gen-Xers said the exact same thing about 10-15 years ago, only focused on the Baby Boomers. ;-) I think critics (and others) have a bias toward the music that they grew up with, because it fueled their initial passion for music and propelled them to where they are now. It is funny how people think the current Top 40 is indicative of the sad state of popular music today...particular certain hipster douchebags.

Martha Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:36 PM EST

My husband and I have a theory that any of the so-called "legendary" bands of the 60s and 70s like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the Doors pretty much received that status from a bunch of stoners getting high in their rooms and thinking how "Dark Side of the Moon was so deep, man..." It's not that these bands are awful (except for the Doors, whose music is just excruciating), but they're not as fabulous as the potheads think.

funkymono Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

1. Dave Matthews Band
2. Jimmy Buffett
3. [Insert name of jam band here.] I list this one because I have several acquaintances who are jam-band fans, and several of them act like you're an uneducated moron with no taste if you don't like jam bands and/or listen to anything with any chance of being played on commercial radio.

thorswitch Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

When I was in 6th grade, I embarrassed the daylights out of myself by confidently proclaiming to a bunch of boys waxing rhapsodic about the Beatles that I'd never understood the big deal about the Beatles, they just sounded like a cheap imitation of Paul McCartney and Wings to me. Ahem. These days, I do have more appreciation for their music, but I'm not a huge fan. I cannot STAND anything by Elvis, the Rolling Stones have never done much for me, either, and I don't think I'll ever truly understand how Bob Dylan was able to have a career as a singer. Lyricist and/or songwriter, sure! He comes up with some great stuff, but ugh, his voice! Granted, my taste goes a bit the other way - for me I can't remember the last time I went for even a day without listening to at least some Rush and Pink Floyd. Their music is a bit like air to me - I don't do well without it.

Alex Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

Okay, my wife reminded me that I do like one of Radiohead's songs -- Creep. This led me to search out a list of (what one person considers to be) Radiohead's best songs (pre-In Rainbows), and read in the comments that Radiohead now hates Creep and won't play it at their concerts. That to me sums up why I will never like them -- gee, let's disown our only song that makes us halfway accessible! It's that holier-than-thou B.S. that I can't stand about bands like Radiohead.

SWN Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

Sting! He's horrible. And he gets even worse when he attempts to act. When it comes to the Police, I have to agree with N.W.A.

raude Tue, May 6, 2008 at 06:03 PM EST

I'm glad I'm not the only person who can't stand Pearl Jam-too self righteous and boring, and Eddie Vedder is a horrible singer who has influenced others to sing horribly (like Creed). Also, I like Bruce Springsteen the person, but the music...eh. R.E.M. (especially Michael Stipe) are awful as well.

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Used to love Mariah, now I can't stand her. She can't sing and just sucks beyond belief. Don't get Bruce Springstein either. Love "Born in the USA", other than that I just don't get the hype. Everyone else y'all have been mentioning I love.

pede Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

All of the stuff listed below. Nice to know I'm not alone in the world. And if we can list grunge as a 'group' then rap/hip-hop would also qualify for me. Which brings to mind Justin Timberlake. OMG I do NOT get him or his crapass music at all. Him or Timbaland. Thank you for allowing us to vent!

Heather Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

I had a huge crush on a guy who loves the Doors. So I checked them out, naturally. Let's just say that not too long after I listened to the Doors, my crush for him died because I realized that if we ever were together, I'd have to listen to that.

Also, Paramore. I feel like I should support them because they have a girl in the band, but I can't. They're not that great.

Freddie Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:47 PM EST

Put me down for Bob Dylan as well. To KLF's point on Mariah Carey - is that considered seminal music (not even sure seminal is really the right adjective)? Some wailing diva who sings in a range only dogs can hear doesn't seem to even qualify for consideration.

carr Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:47 PM EST

man what a good topic. i didn't realize the way i felt about so many bands/artists until now i guess.
bob dylan- you hit it spot on. it's about the lyrics, but you can't typically understand what he's saying.
rolling stones- a lot of their stuff DOES sound the same. and a lot of it is just ho hum. they do have some classic songs that are great. but i dont get the BIG fuss over them.
bruce springsteen- just never got it. hated the voice. can only listen to one or two songs of his.
ac/dc- never got it either. a couple of overplayed songs, only maybe two of which are actually good.
ditto on dave matthews too.
coldplay- i love some of the songs, but then i try to listen to the rest of the cds and everything else puts me to sleep.
big time with Prince.
U2 was always too politically preachy.
never understood pearl jam, nirvana, green day as consistent in "greatness"

lizzie Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

i gotta agree with grunge. i mean, smells like teen spirit is a good song, but i never really got the whole deal about nirvana

Alex Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

Ditto on Radiohead. Much like people who say The Wire is the best show on TV (no, good TV shouldn't require a Ph.D. to decipher), I'm sick of people saying they're the best band ever. Not one of their songs has ever made me think, "Wow, I love the way that sounds." Great music should be at least halfway accessible, and Radiohead's music is not.

paige Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

even though i ditto KLF on the Mariah hate- i'm also gonna have to put on some U2 hate- it's self important garbage that people think can feed starving countries... Green day is another band who's fake punk has gotten them boatloads of grammy's.

Sara Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:24 PM EST

I've never been into The Doors, and it was made even worse in college when all the 'yippies' (yuppies + hippies... you know, the spoiled kids who liked to think they were all countercultural because they smoked pot and didn't bathe) just made it worse. They pretty much ruined Bob Marley for me, too, which is a shame.

marion Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:20 PM EST

Prince.

(Unless he's being played by Dave Chapelle and serving pancakes to Charlie Murphy)

T-Rex Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

Is Grunge a band? Cause I can't stand it. Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, STP, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, etc, are not listening music.

Kent Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

I HATE U2..there, I said it. They're too political, and Bono always looks like he is constipated. I just NEVER got them at ALL.

But Pink Floyd...I love everything in their catalog.

ks Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

Here are a few artists who admittedly made a huge influence or are music icons that I just can't get into

1)the Beatles
2)the Rolling Stones
3)Billy Joel
4)Bruce Springsteen
5)Bob Dylan
6)Johnny Cash

Although they all have songs I like --as a whole I just don't get what all the fuss is about and can't get myself as worked up over them as everyone else is

ChadronJames Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

As a teenager I discovered the Pink Floyd song "Comfortably Numb" and loved it. I played it for my older brother, who's opinion I respected, and he thought it was just a bunch of drugged out depressing garbage. I still like the song, and I still like my brother, even though he was totally wrong. Drugged out and depressing yes, but garbage? Not unless garbage is defined by awesomeness! I love Pink Floyd, but I can see how it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea (or needle induced comfortable numbness).

Shana Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:07 PM EST

Bob Dylan. You can't understand a word he says and its supposed to be all about the LYRICS! I like some of his stuff when other people cover it but he's just this gross old crinkly thing. Yuch.

Justin C. Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:01 PM EST

At 22, I'm just annoyed with all those nostalgic/elitist/self-centered Baby Boomer and Gen-X journalists who constantly remind us kids that we "missed out" on the good stuff, as if everything in music that was worth happening did so in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I don't think any one particular artist is overrated, but I do think we're living in a nostalgia-centric era in which embracing the youthful Billboard spirit is supposedly bringing us one step closer to an artistic apocalypse. Whatever.

Chris Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

The band I get the most **** for not liking -- Dave Matthews. He's got a couple of okay songs, but most of it is trust fund hippy garbage. I feel like you can sum up Phish, the Dead, and other bands of their ilk in the same way.

cimagato Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

I have been forced to listen to Pink Floyd all my life and it's got to stop! They're the dullest, dreariest band on the planet. Oh, and I'm hated for not caring for Bob Dylan. Yeah, he writes okay songs, but do I have to listen to him? Oh, and someone mentioned Phil Collins. I heard old Genesis songs when Gabriel was the lead--great, weird band. Why did they take that easy-listening road? And everyone goes on about the Stones. I don't get it. Most of their stuff sounds the same. Much rather listen to Radiohead. Hell, I'd even listen to Weezer or All-American Rejects over some of the old "pivotal" stuff.

suntrap Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

The Rolling Stones. Yes they were well before my time, but I get other bands from the same era. I just can't like them and I do not find even a young Jagger to be even remotely attractive.

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

the grateful dead. 'nuf said

Anonymous Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi...just never got it, I guess.

adam Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

standard "i appreciate their contributions disclaimer." anyway, I just can't stand the Rolling Stones, Phil Collins, or Beyonce.

Lauren Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

You nailed it with Pink Floyd. Radiohead (post 90's) is a close second on my list.

Snarf Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

I just don't "get" the fuss over the following...(although I'm aware and appreciate their contributions)
The Beatles
Elvis
AC/DC
Led Zepplen (Although I think Robert Plant is a great singer)

palais Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

Pink Floyd is the big one, I never got them. But Rush is the one that gets me in most trouble. I'm Canadian, and Canadians are supposed to love Rush. Sorry, but I can't stand them.

KLF Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

Number one on my list is Mariah Carey. Can't stand to look at her, I think she is an self-absorbed DIVA and I just wish she would go away for ever!
