PopWatch Confessional: Which seminal band makes you seminauseated?

May 6, 2008, 05:18 PM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: Coachella 2008, Music, Ouch! That was my ear!, PopWatch Confessional, Whining

Pinkfloyd_l It's been nearly 48 hours since I last touched the dead grass of the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, PopWatchers, but after two consecutive weekends of music festival goodness, I'm having a hard time letting go. Specifically, I can't get over the pained reactions from several of you Pink Floyd fans to my dismissal of Roger Waters' set at Coachella. It seems you come out in force to defend your rock gods: My friend and picnic-table companion Maura faced the same rage after her post over on Idolator, and even Willman's informed, articulate critique here led to howling.

So I got to thinking: Surely I'm not the only one who can't make it all the way through the pretentious muddle of Dark Side of the Moon (pictured), thought "Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2" was barely listenable even before classic rock stations beat it to death with the over-programming stick, and never once spent any time staring at a blacklight poster while playing "Mother" on repeat and crying a little because it's just so deep, man. Of course, from an objective standpoint, I can recognize the talent/craft involved; I can even occasionally tolerate "Wish You Were Here" — although nine out of ten times I mistake it for "I Wish It Would Rain Down." And yes, I understand the Pink Floyd influence on several of the groups I legitimately enjoy today. But do I have to actively like and/or be exposed to Pink Floyd in order to have this understanding? Ugh. Please. No.

Your turn, PopWatchers: What seminal band (or solo artist) can you not stand? Now's the time to get it off your chest. And hey, you can be anonymous, so one ever need know you secretly harbor a passionate hatred for the Beatles and everything those demented Liverpudlians* stood for! Let it out!

*Not my actual opinion

UNENDING. That's what it's supposed to say. Not 'undending.' Or I guess "endless" would work just as well. Yeah...

Jen Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 08:47 PM EST

Phish! Why, God...why? They were just a poor man's Grateful Dead, and the Grateful Dead were just a poor man's poor band! Just awful, howling, merciless, undending jam-trash. And similar to how it was/is with Pink Floyd, you seriously have to be high to be THAT into their stuff, man. Their music is not for sober people.

Silv Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 06:28 PM EST

*Beatles. Like some of their songs. DON'T get the whole "oooohhhh" factor.
*Springsteen. Can't stand the mumbling. Same goes for Bob Dylan.
*Billy Joel. I once accidentally smacked someone in the face in my haste to change the radio station. Hate the songs that get stuck in your head - and the man gives me the creeps.
*Nirvana. I tried to get them, really. But couldn't make sense out of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." If that makes me dumb, whatever. Don't care for any of the grunge bands for that matter.
*Kanye West. Mind you, I liked "Stronger," that song had a purpose; everything else, like many rap songs, I can do without. If I can't dance to it, what's the point.
All that being said, hey, everyone's different, that's what makes the world go 'round.

K Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 03:01 PM EST

I will never understand why people love Bob Dylan so much. I really don't even think his lyrics are all that special. And I don't get the Grateful Dead thing either. I've tried, but I just don't understand why people think they're so special.

NO DEAD Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 02:47 PM EST

The Grateful Dead are EASILY the most overrated "seminal" band to ever record or play a show. I saw them in 1981 and was never so bored at a show in my entire life of shows. YAWN!

maryd Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:48 PM EST

I am so with you on Floyd, Whitney. Love Spiritualized and a number of other bands that are obviously indebted to Floyd, though.
It's not musical ignorance, lack of appreciation for art, etc. etc. Quite frankly, it's the melodies, or lack thereof. The moaning, tuneless vocals. The slow death that is so many of their long, boring songs. Can't stand Rush either, but I've noticed that few women can.

I was there in the 80s Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

Has to be said. INXS were one of the most boring, overrated, middle of the road, 'safe' pop disasters Australia ever produced.
They need to just fade into obscurity and vanish. They only did one good song and one only, which was "Don't Change", its about the only song that is actually capable of raising the pulse rate above average, and in which Annoying Boy didn't sing in his usual girly nasal whinge.

Bethany Thu, May 22, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

This is kind of old now, but I just wanted to throw this out there--I really, really can't stand Leonard Cohen. There. I said it.

Mike Thu, May 15, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

It must pain you to know that most of the Coachella forum thinks Waters is the best set in the festivals history - and these are people who have been going for years.

The people calling you guys idiots for ripping the show aren't really Floyd fans. See.. they saw the show.

ParrotHead Fri, May 9, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

I can relate to, but don't get the fascination with the Grateful Dead. I like Jerry Garcia as only an ice cream flavor. Though, I guess DeadHeads wouldn't understand my Hawaiian shirt, flip flops, grass skirt, and fin hat.

Stephanie T. Fri, May 9, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

Wow Eric you are really pissed. For me, if you are a trained musician (Gilmour), your music will stand the test of time. If you are someone who at the time could look good on camera (Brit minus KFC) then your music won't. And Utopia is okay, except Todd Rundgren is a better live performer than recorded, and does not really need a band. But that's just my opinion.

Daveman Fri, May 9, 2008 at 03:07 AM EST

This goes to the people who dislike or "don't get" REAL music;
The reason why you don’t like it is because people naturally dislike something they can't understand. Music is an audible art form that supposed to project emotions. If the artists’ intention was for everyone to "get it" just to relate to the mass populous for the purpose of selling records, then they'd only sing versions of spice girls, madonna & timberlake.
Real music has a soul, that's why most people don't forget the songs, because it reminds them of a feeling and it brings that feeling back. Not just something cute to tap their foot to and then forget.
Long live PJ, LONG LIVE ART!!

ToniDanynza Thu, May 8, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

I absolutely HATE Inxs (with the exception of Never Tear Us Apart), REM and U2. Bonos is a bane to the earth!

ToniDanynza Thu, May 8, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST

I absolutely HATE Inxs (with the exception of Never Tear Us Apart), REM and U2. Bonos is a bane to the earth!

lunaburning Thu, May 8, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

I just don't get the Grateful Dead. I never have. I don't exactly hate them, as much as I have no feelings for them whatsoever. Frankly, they just bore me. If I never hear another Dead song again in my life, I don't think that I'll even notice.

eeks Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

bon jovi, bruce the boss, pffft ANY top 40 artist of today. I don't get how they are on those charts, oh wait it's all label bs! nobody is even illegally downloading jodi sparks. eeeeeeeeeks!

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

You know, here are some artists that I don't think I saw ANY negative picks on:

Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, Toto, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Electric Light Orchestra, The Cars, Queen, Styx, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Yes, Alan Parsons Project, Asia, Boston, Kansas, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Hall & Oates, Rod Stewart, The Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Heart, Cheap Trick, The Police, Van Halen, R.E.M.

Does that mean that everybody likes them?? I doubt it.

adam Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

After my last post, I reviewed the comments and now see the confusion. A different Adam (it is a common name) stated he did not enjoy Rush. That was not me.

adam Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

Martha. I don't get upset when people "don't like my favorite band" nor did I "trash" any other bands. My point was that it is silly to promote hate, especially when it could be offensive to those who enjoy the bands music. Whitney is certainly entitled to her opinions, but I find it strange that someone who appears to like and work in the music industry would spend her time encouraging others to make disparaging comments on bands. Like I said originally, musical taste differ and people often form emotional bonds and attachments to their favorite musicians. When you attack an artist, you collaterally attack all those who like them. My point was, if you don't like a certain sound, simply turn it off. Don't waste your time spreading hate and offending others. It's that simple. Perhaps instead of posting an article bashing bands she does not like, Whitney could spend her time promoting the artists that she does enjoy.

~libby~ Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

I can't bear Rush, Steve Miller, and Led Zeppelin. Oh, and I know this is practically heresy, but I can't stand The Pretenders.

Martha Thu, May 8, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Hey, Eric and Adam, why get so upset just because people don't like your favorite band? Especially when you don't hesitate to trash current musical acts, who themselves might (in 30 years) be characterized as "seminal." And stop attacking Whitney - she's as entitled to her musical opinion as anyone.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

When I was in college, I was a DJ on the radio and I used to do a weekend midnight show that featured many obscure and psychedelic rock classics; the kind of stuff you'd never hear on classic rock radio today, like Pink Floyd's "Echoes", "Dogs", "Interstellar Overdrive", "A Saucerful of Secrets", etc. and other full album side cuts from bands like Yes, The Grateful Dead, Utopia, etc.

adam Thu, May 8, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

Good point Eric. I wonder if Whiteny got permission and secured the right to use Pink Floyd's copyrighted album cover to promote her hate filled article.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

Journey and Def Leppard were the soundtrack of my high school years in the '80s. I still love them!

Tom Mangan Thu, May 8, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Thanks whittlz, for reminding me why I can't bear to hear Pink Floyd anymore: so much carping about how terrible it is to be a rich white rock star. Get over it, guys. I still like "Wish You Were Here," though.

Sorry to the rest of ya, though, but hatin' on Dylan, the Stones and Led Zep is just wrong. Hatin' on Bad Co., Journey, Jethro Tull is fine, though none of these is especially "seminal."

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

Thank you, Adam! I got your back! It almost sickens me to see the cover of probably the greatest rock album of all time associated with Whitney's article!

I swear, if "American Idol" and "Dancing With the Stars" ever go off the air, and Michael Bay stops making movies, what will this blog ever have to talk about??

adam Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Good job spreading hate! That's just what this world needs more of! Music should never be about hate. If you don't like an artist or a song, just TURN IT OFF. While I don't like everything I hear, I respect everyones opinions. Music is very personal and attacking an artist is often a personal attack on those who enjoy their music. You should be ashamed Whitney. Get a real job! You obviously know nothing about music.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

So much Pink Floyd hating. It's as depressing as "The Final Cut".

Jill Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

Hey, I'm 41 years old as well (Eric F) and I absolutely HATE Pink Floyd. Hate, hate, hate "Money". I've hated it since the 6th grade; it was stupid then and it's stupid now. But if it makes you feel better I also do not like Britney or any AI singers.

Emma Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

Well, people have reminded me of bands I don't like (The Eagles, Bob Dylan). I have to disagree about Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, and grunge, especially Nirvana and Pearl Jam. I'm sure it has something to do with what I discovered when I was a teenager and listened to these bands for the first time, but I still listen to them on a regular basis. I think my most hated band is The Grateful Dead, though. I dated a guy who thought he was a hippie and loved them...I can't stand the guy or the band any more. As for the posters who say they hate all rap, I think that's a pretty broad statement, and I'm willing to bet they haven't heard ALL rap music. There are some great artists out there and I don't think you can group them all together, it's a pretty big category of music.

Arbitrator Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

I can't stand Bruce Sprinsteen, CCR, Neil Young's voice, or bob Dylan's Voice. Love Pnik Floyd and Jimi Hendrix.

kal Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

cannot stand Bruce. i find his raspy voiced "anthems" to the down trodden pretentious and sappy. and i am from philadelphia so this is blasphemy.

kal Thu, May 8, 2008 at 09:07 AM EST

cannot stand Bruce. i think find his raspy voiced "anthems" to the down trodden pretentious and sappy. and i am from philadelphia so this is blasphemy.

CC Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

But they (EW) can't say anything against rap! It's unconstitutional! And not to mention dangerous. Go ahead and write a piece on how Rap sucks.
Nope, not gonna happen.

Thu, May 8, 2008 at 08:29 AM EST

Rap is grating on the nerves. I'd rather listen to Floyd 24/7 without rest, than be subjected to rap. No real talent needed, just anger and attitude and lots of bling.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

Scott, I'm with you on the rap music! In fact, the closest I come to liking rap is Blondie's little bit during the song "Rapture". Some say that song was the birth of rap, but I'd be willing to bet those that know a lot more than me about it would dispute that claim.

Eric Friedmann Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:57 AM EST

Hey, hey, hey, wait a minute! I'm not knocking WANG CHUNG! Hell, I still love the "Mosiac" album from 1986 and their soundtrack to the movie TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. is still pretty cool. But let's be honest here...they didn't exactly set the bar for longevity. They had their moment for a couple of years and then they faded away; just like I predict many of today's bullsh*t pop stars will!

Ryan B Thu, May 8, 2008 at 07:47 AM EST

Eric Clapton puts me to sleep.

biggest Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:39 AM EST

I hate Texas, Rolling Stones, Justin Timberlake among many others but these are the folk that make me spew.
P.S. People who think that music was better in the 60's and 70's need to stay away. Grunge Rules!!!

JP Mansoni Thu, May 8, 2008 at 03:27 AM EST

Cannot stand:
Beyonce,
Madonna,
Mariah Carrey,
Coldplay,
REM
I also think that what music people like is a reflection of their level of education/sophistication (this mostly comes from the home). At the extremes, I bet most classically-trained musicians love the Beatles and you won't find literature buffs that dislike Dylan. It says something about you to like these two artists.

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:55 PM EST

Cant stand U2 and Bob Dylan and I agree with Justin C. I too am 22 years old and am sick of people saying that "we kids" don't know good music these days. It's extremely annoying!

Tuzo Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:12 PM EST

Kay suday badahay dadalay. Oh sorry...the translation should be "can't stand Bob Dylan".

And the longer the Rolling Stones hang around the more irritating they become.

Silv Wed, May 7, 2008 at 08:40 PM EST

Hate the Beatles - though I don't mind their music, I think they're overrated. Hate the Who - just bang on the guitar strings with a wooden spoon, same effect. Hate most rap - music should be sung - hence the term "song" - not shouted, talked, mumbled, etc. Never got Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam, and other 90s grunge. Don't get Dave Mathews. And the only Bruce Springsteen song I ever really liked was the one I hear others consider a sellout to the dance music of the early 80s- Dancing in the Dark.

Scott Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:44 PM EST

Rap music. All of it. I'm an open-minded fan of music, but I will forever be baffled at how anyone can listen to rap music. Also, listening to Justin Timberlake makes me want to barf.

Zorro Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:25 PM EST

I can see how some people would get all worked up at your criticism of their favourite, hallowed bands. But they should take your comments in context. We live at an accelerated pace compared to 1970. Shorter attention spans. Music has changed - not necessarily for the better - but our tastes still get influenced by the current trends in music. Zeppelin is my favourite band of all times. If I were marooned on an island with one CD? It would be Physical Graffiti...or...any one of their albums. So I'm a true Led Zep fan. But I've criticized them plenty when they deserved it. They even criticize themselves. Jimmy Page has admitted that they could be self-indulgent on-stage, playing solos that went on too long. And do I listen to Pink Floyd today? Not so much. Only when I want to feel severely depressed. Kidding. But they're still one of my faves. Why? Because when I think back to how completely blown away I was when I first heard those songs....today's music isn't nearly as exciting.

CBass Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

Please tell me I'm not the only Bon Jovi hater out here! I cannot listen to Livin' on a Prayer one more time... The only song I may hate more is Hotel California!

Susan Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

U2's early hits like "She moves in mysterious ways" and "With or without you" are great. However, their two latest albums are disappointments,to say the least. "Vertigo" made me nauseous. They're righteous has-beens. At least Bono has a sense of humor&was a crazed guru in "Across the Universe."

Enya has jumped the shark as well. "Amarantine" and "Day without rain" are generic New Age bland pablum. Talk about luck of the Irish!

cb Wed, May 7, 2008 at 07:01 PM EST

It's nice to know I'm not the only person who can't stand Nirvana!

Also gotta vote for REM, U2, and Madonna.

Julie Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

Some interesting choices on here. I have to go with John Lennon, and raise one Madonna. Both make me nauseous. Also, I would rather listen to the Guess Who then The Who. And at roughly the same age as good old Eric (I'm 43), I am not a huge Pink Floyd fan. Don't hate them, I just don't think they are as brilliant as some others do.

Drew Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

I really hate AC/DC

Drew Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

I really hate AC/DC

Jimmy Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:14 PM EST

The period between OK Computer and In Rainbows for Radiohead

Rolling Stones post Some Girls (except for start me up)

The Beatles before Rubber Soul

Rush, Heart, Boston, the eagles

Any music recorded before 1962 besides Jazz

Metallica

Beth Wed, May 7, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Here's my deep dark confession: I miss albums. I miss the imperfect sound quality, including the scratches! I miss when artists would record in only one or a few takes. Now the music is so over produced. Everything is so flawless and refined that it has lost some character. Artists who can't sing are stars. Bands don't even sound the same in person. Sigh, I miss my 45's!

Kai- Wed, May 7, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

Led Zeppelin is number one on my list.... The songs just seem to go on and on.

To Eric Friedman Wed, May 7, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Say what you will about Beyonce, Brtiney Spears etc...BUT ILL BE DAMNED IF I SIT HERE AND LET YOU MAKE DISPARAGING REMARKS ABOUT WANG CHUNG!!
Eric - everybody wants to have fun tonight, everybody wants to Wang Chung tonight. The sooner you realize that, the better.

VERONICA D Wed, May 7, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

I can not stand the Beatles later work and prefer the "I wanna hold your hand" period. I hate, hate Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band album.

t-bone Wed, May 7, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

whitney, i 100% agree with you about pink floyd! yuck. same goes for the eagles and jimmy buffet.

Zod Wed, May 7, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

A couple more...
The Eagles - I think I hate them more than the Stones
"Come on, man. I had a rough night and I hate the fn' Eagles, man!"
Jeffrey 'The Dude' Lebowski
Aerosmith stinks too

Sheena Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

I HATE Elvis and most of the Beatles songs, Paul McCartney sucks, Bob Dylan is awful, And I especially hate Justin Timberlake and all gangsta rap, New Kids on the Block drove me crazy-how bad they where, Beyonce sucks, Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson can't sing for s--t, Coldplay is a joke, And this dork David A on AI is so freaking boring I can't stand it!

Zod Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

I always felt there was something wrong with me for not liking the Rolling Stones. I’ve always made serious attempts to get into them but could never do it. Finally, after years of trying I finally said to myself “ I DON’T LIKE THEM”. I’ve lived a better life ever since.

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Eric says "...irresistable streak of sadistic barbarism" -- that's as pretentious as a lyric from U2!

TOM Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

I lived through the grunge scene and always felt that Nirvana was overrated and Pearl Jam was always better.

Jen Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:23 PM EST

FM I like what you're saying. I played Pearl Jam's CD till it died, and Nirvana, Temple of the Dog, STP, etc, they conjure up great memories, and that's what music's all about to me.

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

I never got the popularity of Heart.

lec Wed, May 7, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

AC/DC. Can't take it. Any of it. Every single time they come on I think of Angus Young in that kilt and it turns my stomach. Oh, and like many here that have voiced their opinion (on a variety of different bands/singers), I think every single one of their songs sounds the same. And don't even get me started on that VOICE!

AEVJ Wed, May 7, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

Rush. I can't take even a second of Geddy Lee's annoying squawk. And Rush fans are SOOOOO ANNOYING!!!

donna Wed, May 7, 2008 at 02:39 PM EST

I'm with all of you on Pink Floyd. Hate them, and will change the radio station if their music is playing. Also don't like Dylan, the Eagles and Genesis (Phil Collins version). I am currently indifferent to the Rolling Stones; early stuff was great, after Exile on Main Street they lost me. IMO, the R&RHOF will be having a really tough time finding inductees pretty soon. Madonna was a bit of a reach for me!

FM Wed, May 7, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

For everyone who says they dont 'get' Nirvana or the Grunge scene in whole, it's becuase you didnt live it.
What made Grunge great is the time it arrived. For ten years prior the music scene had devolved into bubble-gum easy listening and cheesy power-ballads. It was Fake in every way.
Grunge came in and brought back a sense of reality, of commitment and honesty that the music scene had lacked for years.
It may not have been technically proficient, but it felt Real, and that is what made it great.
The reason so many people are nostalgic for it (and other forms of 'classic' rock) is because of the lack of sincerity in popular music.
Of course, there's always some good stuff around if you look hard enough, but put on that top-40 station and listen to it and ask yourself how accuratly what they're singing about reflects your life.
For a few short years in the early 90's it felt like there were musicians who actually understood and represented what was real.
/end Rant

Schneid Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I'm with you on Pink Floyd. I hate this band beyond reason.

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

aaa, HA HA HA HA HA!!! I have only one child, and unless you're a two and a half year-old boy, you can put your sick feeling to rest.

You know, when I was a kid, I had to listen to my father's DOO-WOP music on the radio! I'm telling you, not only did this man know the lyrics to every song played, but he could name you the flipside song of the original record at the time of its release.

Now that I'm older, I still don't like doo-wop, but I can appreciated what that music must have meant to him as a teenager of the '50s.

aaa Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

I have a sick feeling that 'Eric Friedman' is my father posting in disguise.

Martha Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

It is fairly amusing to watch everyone get upset as others say they don't like their favorite bands. Who cares? *You* still like them - isn't that what matters? But Jk, I couldn't pass up your comment about classical music/opera. I hope you'll give the former another try at some point and realize how amazing it is (Beethoven is a good start for the uninitiated) but if you still don't like it, hey, you're entitled.

a Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

oh yeah! and to go off the classic rock subject... I'm sorry but even though I am a child of the 80s and grew up on the grunge of Seattle (knew Kurt Cobain, etc) I REALLY don't get Sonic Youth... OK blast away.

a Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

Jerry Garcia is without a doubt the WORST lead guitarist in history. AUGH! Bob Dylan gives me a headache... literally - I can't listen to his music. And the ONLY Pink Floyd I can listen to is DSOTM... and that infrequently...

Jayel Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

Led Zeppelin. Can't stand them. Can't listen to a single one of their songs all the way through. This was a problem in high school when every boy I even sort of liked thought they were gods. Now with the advent of "only songs you like!" internet radio, it's an even weirder problem. Apparently my other classic rock likes make it genetically, biologically, and psychologically impossible for me to dislike Led Zeppelin - every computer model known to geek-kind calculates me as a fan. Except I'm not. Can't stand them.
I also can't stand AC/DC, but that doesn't seem as odd to me, somehow. Oh, and Coldplay - can someone younger and more sensitive please explain Coldplay? All their songs sounds like "Clocks," and "Clocks" sounds like a test pattern - one chord endlessly repeating until the brain of listener explodes. Which is fine if you're the Ramones and it's on purpose, but Coldplay, like Pink Floyd, are supposed to be deep, right?

SWB Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

I agree on pink floyd being intolerable and I would add the greatful dead. Every song sounds the same.

Jk Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who just couldn't stand Bob Dylan.

99% of all classical/opera music makes my head hurt.

AC/DC always sounded like screeching to me, but most of the big music successes I can't stand are more modern, like the Smashing Pumpkins, Fantasia, Hilary Duff, and all that reggae-infused hip-hop that's huge right now. Oh, and the new Justin Timberlake, which is weird, because a couple of years ago I really liked NSync.

I still don't understand how someone could hate all the Beatles stuff. There's so much different types of it. It's like saying you hate to eat food.

AMW Wed, May 7, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

Pink Floyd LITERALLY makes my mother nauseated. She gets physically ill when she hears them. It has something to do with the fact that she was pregnant when she first heard them.

Madonna. I CAN NOT STAND HER.

Madonna. I CAN NOT STAND HER.

OH I forgot-anyone contemporary. Who the heck are the Jonas Brothers and why, pray God, is Miley Cyrus famous? (that brings up another loathsome figure-her father)

newshound23 Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

ZZ Top. Every time they come on the radio, especially that insipid Legs song, it's changed. And Whitney Houston. Whiney, and she makes my dog cry. And, honestly, the Beatles (as a group), do nothing for me. But I'll take McCartney and Harrison solo.

"I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!" Calmate, people. I will say that I used to not get the Pink Floyd thing, but as I have gotten older, I do like them more. Not sure what is different.

Adam Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

I don't get the attraction to Rush. Prog Rock was the worst thing that happened to the Rock genre. And while were on the topic of all things Canadian, Nickelback's success just confuses me. They are fortunate that most teenagers are content to listen to whatever the radio stations play.

Chuck Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

So many...

The Beach Boys, the Kinks, KISS, (yes) Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel Era Genesis, most solo Beatles, the Dead, post-Bill Berry REM, Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, Mariah Carey, Usher, Death Row Tupac...

MM Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

Some artists I've never been able to get into: Radiohead, Madonna, and Prince.

P.S. Why are people so angry about this topic? People can like different music, it's okay!

I don't know if Jethro Tull can be considered a "seminal" band, but I never understood the fascination with them. When I was a college freshman in 1983, "Aqualung" was the album of choice on my dorm floor and I could never stand it. There was a time when I actively disliked Pink Floyd, too, but I got over it, and though my girlfriend cannot stand Rush, they remain one of my favorites

Dear Lord, don't even get me started on that overrated hack known as Bob Dylan. Whoever told the man that he could carry a tune should be beaten (preferably in the ears).

Shakira
Clay Aiken
Beyonce
The Rolling Stones
Journey

I'm just going to add "Eric Friedmann" to the list under the general "things I cannot stand"

DK Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

Coldplay, the Rolling Stones, the Dave Matthews Band, and Phil Collings. Each revered and respected and (in some cases) rabidly followed.... each a complete mystery to me.

Elaine Wed, May 7, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

The Beatles

To the ever-present Eric Friedman, the only thing that the success of the Eagles Greatest Hits album says is that a LOT of people have bad taste in music. The Eagles were the Hootie and the Blowfish of their time. Don't go by Billboard lists, go by influence. Who the heck was inspired by the Eagles? NO ONE. Just sayin'. Otherwise, I pretty much like/love every major "classic rock" act (including Pink Floyd and Rush) but I do hate me some Steely Dan (even more so than the Eagles), a band that makes me feel like I need to take a bath.

BenG Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

Where to begin? There are SO many. I think Madonna's constant reinvention is tragic and plain sad, especially since her music is carbon copied from kids 1/3 of her age. Miley Cyrus is plain annoying, as is her "alter ego." Chad Kroeger makes me cringe, nuff' said. As a jazz performer, I can't understand, for the life of me, the popularity of Michael Buble, and his sense of self-importance despite his lack of charisma or extraordinary talent is astounding. I confess, I like 1 or 2 songs each by Mariah, Chris Brown, John Mayer, and U2 but I'd NEVER buy any of their albums. And, here's the kicker...Elvis and Johnny Cash...I just don't get them. Yes, I recognize that they are legends of the American music songbook and have shaped and influenced the careers of thousands of musicians but I can't make it through "Love Me Tender" or ANY Cash songs. My loss, or so I'm told.

Shelly Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

Can't stand Beyonce's voice. Major confusion over The Rolling Stones and Madonna. If those 3 disappeared forever I'd be fine.

CMU Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

Eric, get a life. You really are pretentious. And that's coming from someone who is pretentious herself, so I should know.
Anyway, mine would be the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They fill me with rage every time I hear them. I have to change the station as fast as possible when they come on. I hate his voice and the way they sound. I hate their songs. So many people are like, "You don't like the RHCPs?!" as if there's good cause for their outrage. It's not like I said I didn't like the Beatles (I do. A lot.).

Chris Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

Jack Johnson! Every song the same and I just can't take it. "Boring and sleep inducing".

MAS Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

I must add to the growing chorus of those who have named Led Zeppelin. I can usually make it about halfway through one of their songs, but the minute the screeching begins, I have to change the station. Other than the drumming, I can't figure out why people like this overrated band. Or Dave Matthews Band - they suck too.

Eric Friedmann Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Oh man, this all just puts such a great big smile on my face! I must have an irresistable streak of sadistic barbarism in me that enjoys intentionally pissing younger people off! It's just so easy sometimes!

Well now, if you'll all excuse me, I have to go listen to Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and piss on Britney Spears' picture.

Bye-bye!

gal who's 34 Wed, May 7, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

Eric, the "whatevs" was INTENTIONAL, duh. You act as though being a 41-yr-old snob gives you the right to insult the intelligence and taste of everyone 35 and under, so I was living up to your expectations. Sarcasm is lost on pompous blowhards, though. Dude!
