NKOTB: The dancing is making me slightly nervous

I got my latest NKOTB.com update this morning. (I registered for the New Kids on the Block newsletter "for work," FYI, and not because I have a junior high yearbook filled with classmates wishing me a happy life with Jordan Knight.) Below is the latest video of the guys rehearsing for their May 16 Today show performance. I knew there would be dancing, and I was even looking forward to it. But while I'm totally down with them working their imaginary mic stands, watching five men — now approaching 40 — bust 'N Sync moves (circa "Bye Bye Bye") is a little uncomfortable. We should all, of course, reserve judgment until we see them Friday, but I wanted to put you on alert. I'd say we're at orange.

You can hear their first single, "Summertime," here. It's forgettable, but kinda catchy. I'd put it above LFO's "Summer Girls" but below O-Town's "We Fit Together." (Special shout-out to my friend Eva, who not only remembered the title of that O-Town song when I IM'd her for it, but also quoted lyrics.)

loving NKOTB! YEs! is nice to have a group that come back @ 30's and still clean. Not a bunch of druggies that sing with much hatred & craps but still get good review from critics!!!
NKOTB 4eva! All the blessings and enjoy your comeback! So happy for all of u! Cheers

I was one of the lucky few to see them do the final dress rehearsal at the House of Blues last night. What an AWESOME preview of what is to come from NKOTB. They are much better this time around. They sound great, got the moves and are soooo SEXY. You will not be disappointed and they will sell out shows all over.

Props to your friend for remembering O-Town period.

As a long time fan of NKOTB I have to say I never thought that their age would be the biggest thing critics discuss. I guess it always has to be something for the guys, but too old to dance? Is that the best you've got? I'm 33 and if I'm suppose to stop doing the things I love or do well because I turn 39 then just shoot me now. They aren't competing with other boy bands, they don't have to!

Katie Tue, May 13, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

Mandi, how can a song be both catchy and forgettable? Isn't that an oxymoron?

It's catchy for sure. If I hear it in the morning I find myself singing it all day. Can't wait to see them performing on the Today show Friday!

Emoney Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

I actually sorta like them better now than I ever did in junior high. I appreciate the effort they're putting in, and if a guy like Tom Jones gets to have undies thrown at him into his 90's, why not NKOTB? And Donny's hot. Didn't anyone watch Band of Brothers?

Jeanette Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

BTW- most of their listeners are in their 30-40's. I'm a 30 year old singer and if they can still sing who gives a rats behind how old they are? I will be there to give them that chance to do something they love.

Ranking ANY song under an O-Town ditty is a cause for concern. And I'm shocked (shocked!) that no mention was made about the underwear.

junior Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

Your only thought while watching that vid should have been "How many could I sleep with before someone found out?" They look fantastic!

Lisa Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

I think they look fantastic! Can't wait to see what they've been working on. And "Summertime" will be coming out of my car all summer!

Mary Tue, May 13, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

Why is it when the Rolling Stones, who are close to 100, go on tour everyone is thrilled but because this is NKOTB there is a problem because they are going on 40?! I can't think of many 40 year olds who can dance like this and look good doing it. Time to step off with the hatred. This is a group that truly cares about their fans!

Winona Tue, May 13, 2008 at 08:34 AM EST

Flashbacks - aaaahhh!!!!! (The good kind, I suppose...) Watching that makes me even more glad that my pal and I bought cheap seats so we can get drunk and Statler-and-Waldorf our way through the concert. It's going to be awesome!

Nix Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

Careful, Mandi. Your amusing front of shallowness might be slipping to reveal true shallowness.

Riveria Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:09 AM EST

You guys should check out the artist behnd the NKOTB. his name is Nasri and he is a young talent from Toronto, Canada. He wrote the song "click click click" , "summertime and many others. He is the reason there music is so young and popy. Check him on myspace and it will help you understand how this all begun. myspace.com/nasriworld

check out the song " not the same"

PS: he is really hot to.

Ava Tue, May 13, 2008 at 02:35 AM EST

Amen to that, Samantha! And might I add, how come no one has criticized Mariah Carey for NEVER dancing? She just kinda walks around onstage but here are 5 guys, giving us their all and they get all this negative criticism for it? It's biased, premature, and immature of self-proclaimed music critics. Clean your slate and open your minds. All that dirty buildup is making you stink.

JJ Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

They look pretty rusty to me. Like five different versions of the Tin Man squeaking down the yellow brick dance floor. That said, I really hope they do well and the concert is a hit. Seriously, how uplifting would that be? Like an underdog movie.

SH Mon, May 12, 2008 at 10:04 PM EST

Hey! That O-Town song was guilty pleasure-awesomeness!

Jackie Mon, May 12, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

Why should anyone feel uncomfortable? They all look great and still have the moves, so why not? They dance better than some guys my age (23). IDK why media acts like you expire at a certain age. It's ridiculous and disconcerting to young adults.

Stormy Mon, May 12, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

I'm 33 and they look hot to me! Finally a boyband for the more mature ladies. I will be going to their LA show ;)

Zobiana Mon, May 12, 2008 at 07:57 PM EST

They look great. I can't wait to see them perform. Thanks for the article, its always nice to see a google alert with "NKOTB" on it (the more the better)

Samantha Mon, May 12, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

Why do you have to feel uncomfortable? How many times do we see Madonna dance around in videos and concerts and she's older than they are? Gimmie a break.

Heather Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

Jonathan looks so uncomfortable. (As well he should be as the eldest.) Which, okay, I was watching for him because he's still my favorite. But honestly, the only one that I can see dancing and not looking totally goofy is Danny. Never cared about Danny, but he *looks* like he's still edgy enough to pull it off without looking too much like a poser. (I'm still going to the concert if they come near me.)

Oola Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

Holy lord. There's something about the editing in this that reminds me exactly of their Hangin' Tough behind-the-scenes VHS from way back.

Chris Mon, May 12, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

OMG! I still love them like I did...twenty years ago. Ugh!
