Jason Castro discusses the 'American Idol' Swaybots™

May 14, 2008, 10:43 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Idolatry

In the third and final installment of our interview with the delightful Jason Castro (click here if you missed parts 1 and 2), the dreadlocked dude discusses the worst thing that ever happened to American Idol (the dreaded Swaybots ™) and whether or not he envisions following in the footsteps of the show's most successful fourth-place finisher, Chris Daughtry. Hope you all enjoy!

Dylan Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 08:39 PM EST

I just love this kid.

Kato Sat, May 31, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

I was not that big of a Jason fan. But I think he got a little bit of a bum rap cause of his looks and attitude. Did he deserve to be in the top 4? maybe not. But I will say this. Since Jeff Buckley, no one has done a good version of Halleluiah. That is until Jason

anti-clueless Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

It's interesting to note that while the show portrayed Jason as getting votes for his looks and the non-fans posting here are calling the Jason fans fools for loving his beauty, the Jason fans are all commenting on Jason the Musician or Jason the Human Being instead of Jason the Hottie. Taken in by the propaganda much?

mclovin Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:30 AM EST

Great interview, Mr. Slezak. Thank you.

Castrofan2 Mon, May 19, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

KG, many of Jason's fans are in touch with his family and close friends. Believe me, our enthusiasm for Jason is not affecting him negatively. He's thrilled with the fanbase, humbled that so many people love him, and energized by our excitement over his music and career. Every artist wants to be appreciated. Telling people to stop being so enthused is counter-productive.

KG Mon, May 19, 2008 at 02:35 AM EST

To Michael: I really liked your interview with Jason Castro. Your questions were thoughtful, appropriate, & insightful and I can tell Jason responded positively to those questions & liked the feedback you were giving him. I like his voice & the style of music that he wants to create & I "get" him.
To Jason's Fans: Could you guys tone down your pimping & promotion of Jason? I know you all love him & he touched your lives in some way. That's cool & all but let Jason decide how he should go about promoting himself & make his music at his pace not yours. Just consider that what Jason wants to do might not be in line with what you want. He has to be happy with the direction his music will go & the way he lives his life first. You guys probably don't see that what you're doing is adding more stress on his shoulders with your expectations just as the negative publicity he's been getting. If you guys really care about Jason, then let him do his thing at his will.

AK Sun, May 18, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

I am not a Jason Castro fan but this interview was good and Castro seems like an intelligent kid. He could go on great lengths and achieve success with that kind of attitude. Thank you Michael for this.

CaliforniaPoppy Sun, May 18, 2008 at 08:56 AM EST

Thank you EW and Micheal Slezak for the interview with Jason Castro. It was refreshing to finally see a JOURNALIST interview him and ask thoughtful meaningful questions to which he could give quality answers. The in depth questions on why he selected the songs that he did, and how he developed the arrangements were especially enjoyable, and Jason's answers give a very clear picture of who he is. I think you helped show a wider audience what Jason's fans are already aware of - that he is an artist (not just a singer) who is truly concerned with the quality of the work he does. I have all his iTunes and am standing by to purchase whatever he does next. I cannot wait to hear more from this gentle soul with the mesmerizing voice!

PT Sun, May 18, 2008 at 01:51 AM EST

I really feel Jason is too respectful to say what the real deal was. I don't think he was overwhelmed or gave up. I think no matter what Jason did, they
were going to slam him. I noticed this pattern with Carly and Michael as well. I would think they did great and the judges would say they were terrible. It was odd because I usually agree with Simon. It got to the point where I was like 'they are going to hate it' before the given contestant performed. Paula's slip up proved that they had their reviews planned out before the performances.

Sat, May 17, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

I really enjoyed your well-researched interviews with Jason. I've seen many and have been wishing that someone would ask him a little about his iTunes studio tracks. I'd be interested to know his reaction to how they turned out...as in AMAZING. Which is his favorite? And I haven't seen any chatter about the fact that the last two he recorded--FIBJ and MTM--sound so strikingly similar in vocal quality to the original artists who recorded them. I'm wondering, given that we have so much archival evidence of Jason's penchant for mimicking people--always in a cute + respectful manner, mind you--if perhaps his intent, once he found himself under nearly overwhelming time pressures, was to try to closely duplicate the sound of Neil and Dylan. I found the likeness to be quite stunning and thought that perhaps it might have been Jason's way of contrasting a straight imitation with what he was able to do with earlier songs--that is, to give them that unique and magical Jason Castro touch.

Thank you Michael for showing people that Jason is not lazy but a true artist who needs to connect to his songs, & how much his fans appreciate his thoughtful performances.I haven't purchased new music in years because it has become so overly produced & repetitive. It is so refreshing to find an artist who can reach our hearts & souls with his stripped down and honest interpretations of songs we've all heard a 100 times before.I can only imagine what his CD will sound like when he can do what he really loves. I don't understand why TPTB @ AI could not recognize the gold mine they had in JC.I already preordered his CD on Amazon & cannot wait till it comes out but hope he is signed by someone who will nurture this special & amazing singer. I also hope he can keep the obvious joy he has for music & life. He's very unique in this day & age. I think the people who don't get him are type As who cannot imagine someone not striving for all the glitz but strives only for the love of music

TD2 Sat, May 17, 2008 at 03:34 PM EST

THANKYOU for NOT mentioning the dreads! He's a great guy with mad talent.

Kyle Sat, May 17, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

CASTRO FOR PRESIDENT.

Christie Sat, May 17, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Jason is absolutely adorable and I love his bit of shyness, yet he's so well spoken. Nothing at all like the idiots on Idol portrayed him to be! Thank you for posting this thoughtful interview. You're my hero. Jason needs a reality show! I need my weekly Jason fix fulfilled!!

Laura Sat, May 17, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

An excellent interview. Jason has the soul of a true artist and I think we'll be hearing great things from him in the future.

mary lee Sat, May 17, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

I really like this kid and like him even more after these interviews. He is so honest and the most modest idol contestant ever. I do think his confidence level went down these last few weeks and that could have something to do with the judges talking about him negative to the press! This kid is the real deal though. I hope he gets a record deal so he could make his unique music. I truly think he is capable of becoming a successful idol!

maP Sat, May 17, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

Your interview with Jason made up for you saying he wasn't trying and he wanted to get kicked off! I am glad you cleared that up with him! Jason's music has made such a impact on people I can not wait to hear more from him. He is a ture talent and a great role model for all of mankind!
Thank You for your wonderful interview. By the way, I have to agree
about the hand wavers!! Someone at AI needs to stop that!!

kmt Sat, May 17, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

Thank you Michael for making me laugh!!! I just started reading/watching your reviews of AI since the start of Season 7 & was thoroughly entertained. I am only looking forward to Season 8 of AI so I can read & watch you. Thanks for the Carly & Jason interviews. I can't wait for their CD's.

castrolite Sat, May 17, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

Jason is so down to earth, so real, nothing phoney about him. I love how he has to love the songs, to feel the music, you can't rush to songs, he is a true artist. He simply wanted to give his best not some mediocre performances out there, so there wasn't enough time for him. I certainly get him. I am also amazed in the arragenment he did on that Mariah Carrey song, I DON'T WANT TO CRY...it brilliant if you ask me. How can Randy said, he didn't get it..its beyond me some strange lua as Randy would say, what an idiot. We all got it even Paula and Simon got it. I also loved that he loves fans that are moved by his music, its the fans he wants. We are definitely moved by his music. I just love his voice, I could listen all night long.

elel Sat, May 17, 2008 at 07:05 AM EST

to anyone who thought we (fans) are spellbound by his personality and looks only, get this: WE LOVE JASON"S MUSIC AND VOICE!!! its either you get it or you dont!

Maggie Sat, May 17, 2008 at 01:28 AM EST

I agree, this is the best interview of with Jason I've seen. He seems so at ease. I didn't pay Jason much mind until he covered Hallelujah by one of my favorites, Jeff Buckley. He did a great job and from there he only got better. I love his style and it was a welcome change from the over the top divas usually on Idol. Simon said that his cover of "Forever In Blue Jeans" was forgettable. So wrong. That is the only song of the entire season that I couldn't get out of my head. It's better than the original. You got give this guy credit, he was the only person in the top 6 with no professional experience. I hope that people don't continue to perceive his shyness as not caring or being a burn out. Hopefully, he'll get a record deal and make the music he wants.

Janet Sat, May 17, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

Michael, Finally, Jason is treated with the respect and dignity he deserves. This is my first year to watch American Idol and will be my last. I thought the whole point of the contest was for America to choose their favorite idol. But midway through the show it became blatantly clear that the judges had chosen the two David's as their idols, and therefore, no one else mattered. Jason Castro certainly did cast a spell on me! I can't go through a whole day without his music. I love the sound of his voice. It's soothing to the soul! It's absolute truth! Jason has this great ability to connect emotionally through his music. Nothing relaxes me more than daydreamingboy.com, my headphones, and just kick back and relax to the best sound ever! I love Jason Castro. I wish him the best! I, too, am not a tween. I am 51. No musician has cast a spell on me since the BeeGee's, or was it the Mama's and the Papa's? Anyhow, it's been a long time and I'm loving it! A special thanks to you Jason.

Janet Murphy Fri, May 16, 2008 at 11:28 PM EST

Yes, Michael--Jason is a "delight". That's a the perfect word to describe him! To me, this was his best interview to date. You treated him with respect and asked him worthwhile questions and he responded thoughtfully and intelligently. If I heard one more person ask him if he said "Don't Vote" (when it's obvious to anyone with eyes and a brain that he's saying "Vote Vote"!)or ask him about his dreadlocks, I thought I was going to scream!!!! The inspid questions being asked over and over was getting to be a bit much. Good for you for doing your homework, knowing about Jason and asking original, insightful questions! His speaking skills have improved so much, particularly when he's dealing with a skilled interviewer like you. Jason has a smooth voice that calms and transports people and his guitar work is the perfect accompainment. Beyond that he has a warmth and a charm on stage that can't be "taught". Jason deserves to be an American Idol!

jcast Fri, May 16, 2008 at 11:20 PM EST

Thanks for this interview! How insightful of you to ask the questions about how Jason felt in some of AI's more insane moments. And what an great kid to answer so simply and honestly. He's got the talent and looks for a show biz career but he may be just a tad too humble to make it in such an ego driven world. Good luck, Jason. I'll be waiting to buy your CD. We adore you and thought you really elevated the level of class and diversity on AI this year.

Paula Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

Thank you, Michael for my favorite interview with Jason Castro. It was so relaxed and you didn't ask the same beat it like a dead horse questions. You seemed to "get" Jason like his legions of fans do. Thank you for treating him with the respect he deserves. Jason's singing and personality are like a breath of fresh air.

liz Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

I really enjoyed these interviews. I think there was a lot of false speculation regarding Jason on American Idol. These interviews clear up a lot of the negative buzz surrounding him these last few weeks. I think he really seems to be a classy, humble, smart guy and is just really new to being in the spotlight. I really like him and respect him even more after watching these interviews. The interviews were well done because the interviewer was an actual fan who follows the show, therefore, he knew how to ask appopriate questions!

Eve Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:31 PM EST

I am a 64 yr. old Grandmother & just wanted to say how much i enjoyed the interview with Jason! I have loved him & his music from the very start! He's so unique and i think even tho he's gone & we'll miss him we'll be hearing alot of his music in he future. i read he is a Christain which makes him even more special in my book! we need more young people like him today. I can't wait for his first CD to come out! You go Jason & keep that beautiful smile & personality! You are in my prayers!

natform Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

Michael,
I wanted to point out something that has not been mentioned much in news articles or blogs- something that I think is completely obvious and important to note.Jason Castro was always on pitch. Every live performance and studio recording has been pitch perfect. I honestly cannot say that even for the singers left who can "belt it out" vocally. Even those singers had pitch problems last week. I mean, if people are going to dare critique Jason's singing ability- then we might as well call it as we see it and Jason was almost always on key and pitch perfect!

Terry Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

As usual, a first class interview by Michael. Well done. Jason is the real deal - he has a charisma - the "IT" factor Simon's always going on about.....Jason has that in spades. His voice, while not technically perfect, connects with a song and makes you feel as if you are hearing it for the first time. Not all of his fans are teen girls either - I'm a 56 year old grandma! The cool thing is that my 25 and 27 year old sons like him too. His appeal crosses generations. I am so looking forward to the tour and to his CD. I hope he signs with a company who nurtures his raw talent and allows him to take time to fall in love with his songs. If so, the CD will be brilliant.
Thank you again for a fabulous article. I think you are a Dreadhead, Michael!! LOL

nazalin Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

thank u so much for the interview you had with jason.
jason is a very talented young man. he is so unique and always positive with everybody. he never said something bad about other no matter what they did to him. i like him for all. i don't want to include my reasons, becuase it would be very long. :) but the most i like about him is his personality that he present on stage or in the public. love him so much. he is always and will always my idol.

angie Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:09 PM EST

cc... just want to say..... those of us that are "older" generally have more wisdom than those of you that are younger, we see the talent in Jason, we see the range in his talent.
and we see his heart in what he sings and we see beyond the "physical".
get your mind out of the gutter!

Claire Fri, May 16, 2008 at 06:58 PM EST

Thanks for this interesting interview with Jason Castro. He was my favorite contestant this season, and I was very sad when he lost his momentum. The pressure cooker isn't for everybody, I guess. He is, however, a startling raw talent of enormous potential and I genuinely hope that he is able to show the world original work, crafted with the care and time he needs, that will give him the niche he deserves in the music world. He was one of the real gems of this AI season, and I wish he'd been given the respect and courtesy he deserved from the AI staff.

Fine work. Thanks.

gailer, dreadhead #342 Fri, May 16, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

Michael!
Thank you soooo much for your 3 part interview with Jason! You asked the questions that I would have asked! I too loved I Dont Wanna Cry and felt the ackwardness of Michelle. Jason will always be my Idol winner-he is a class act-someone who cared about the music and wouldnt settle for mediocrity or selling out to please the judges
I shot the sheriff is my all time exit in idol history!

Paisley Fri, May 16, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

Thank you Michael. All is well again. I loved your 3 installments of the Jason interviews. Although I firmly believe Jason got more votes than Syesha, I am at peace with the outcome now. Jason was quite successful on the show and should not be remembered for his mistake on Mr T. Man but for his impressive performances of I Don't Wanna Cry, OTR, Hallelujah and Travellin' Thru.

Christie Fri, May 16, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Thank you for conducting an interview that allows people to see the real Jason Castro. His comment that he wants fans that feel the music means he gets *us* as much as we get him! There is something very special about Jason Castro and it's just innate. He reaches people with his voice and his music, and this sets him apart from all the other idols. I hope he has a long, long career because it will be a sad day in music when we can no longer hear that angelic voice and feel his spirit.

Tori Fri, May 16, 2008 at 06:03 PM EST

Now, there was an interesting interview. Gives an idea of what Jason, the musician, is thinking about instead of nothing but the everlast "vote, don't vote" "how'd you do your dreads" "are you a stoner" stuff that I'm not the least bit interested in.

Michele Fri, May 16, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

Thank you, Michael!!! You completely redeemed yourself in the wake of your "crisis of faith" in Jason! This was the best interview with Jason I've seen. I appreciate that you were sincerely interested in what he had to say, and that you took the conversation to a new level. Please continue to cover Jason's career. There's a great story in the making right about now! Excellent journalism - kudos!!

Erin C. Fri, May 16, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Jason is an amazing artist with true talent, and I only watched AI to see him - and I'm a 30 year old mom, not a tween!! I appreciate that you respected him enough to ask real questions and not the same old crap that all of the other interviewers have asked. I would like to see a follow-up article on Jason, contradicting some of the negative comments that you made about him on your blog earlier in the season. You have to admit that you misunderstood Jason's personality. Thanks again, Michael, you're interview was very nice and Jason's fans apprecite it.

rem Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

The postings here show nice happy people like to listen to nice happy people.

?? Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

This blog is pretty strange. Over and over again...Thank you Micheal...Jason this and Jason that. (I believe people are repeating themselves for whatever reason)
I don't get all this idol worship. He's just OK in my books.

sasun1123 Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

Great Interview Michael, Like everyone else Said, Glad to have someone in His corner. I am 54, and a Grandmother and I am enjoying Bonding with my 10 year Old "Grand-Daughter" who say's she is going to "Faint" when she see's him on Tour.
Reminicent of MY Days when I fainted when I went to See Paul McCartney... VERY REMINISCENT.. His Music,His Dynamic Charisma & Heart Throbbing Vocals Spans the Generations and bonds
us together Young & Old. Thank You Jason for Giving us All Something Refreshing to Obsess About! Does anyone Know if there is any Radio Staions playing any of His Music yet??? I think it would be a Good show of Support if we all bombarded our Local Radio Stations to Play ANYTHING he Utters! By the Way... His Original Music is Just as Good as
Anyone He Covered on Idol. We Love "Someday" and "The Other Side" especially!

Bev Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:49 AM EST

Thank you Michael for that wonderful 3-part interview. As a fan, I feel happy that you guys was able to give new lights and throw new questions.

natform Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

Jason Castro is gaining momentum as we speak! It's wonderful to read articles in support of his music and his voice. There are so many people who appreciate him for the true artist he is. He is gaining even more support now that he is gone from Idol. He is by far the most memorable contestant. What an intelligent, humble man who exudes inner strength and goodness. Every studio version recorded on itunes thus far projects an amazing voice.Don't let this guy slip through the cracks like AI did. Stay the course Jason!!!!

HannaB Fri, May 16, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

Michael, thank you for doing an interview with substance. I was growing tired of the repetitive questions of lazy commentators who were just going through the motions.

In an interview last week, Bo Bice said to be successful the contestants need to adapt their music to fit American Idol. For an artist like Jason, who takes time to fall in love with his songs then present them to us like finely crafted gifts, that was next to impossible. He isn't an assembly-line type singer. I'm glad he didn't cave into their demands; for that reason I'm glad he didn't win AI.

Thank you for giving Jason time to talk about the music and the process. That's what true music lovers care about. You proved that you're interested in more than just turning out material. You care about your topics and your viewing audience. We appreciate that.

Amy Fri, May 16, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST

I really enjoyed your interview with Jason; in fact, it was one of the best around. Jason has been my favorite since he came out and sang "Daydream." Week after week he has kept me tuning into a show I had only scoffed at before. He drew me in with his voice and the emotion it carried and made me believe what he sang. I have rarely, if ever, been so moved by an artist before. The fact that he seems like a genuinely nice guy who doesn't seek after glitz and glamor only adds to his overall appeal. I was disappointed in the way AI and so many others have treated him (yes, even EW was not always kind), but I wish him well in any future endeavors and I am counting the days waiting for his CD while wearing out my computer listening to his studio recordings. He is just amazing!

Hey Nancy Fri, May 16, 2008 at 08:21 AM EST

Jason didn't get booted because of all the 'comments on the internet'. He got the boot because in the end he picked crap songs and didn't perform them well. It became same old, same old. Yes, he's nice to look at and seems like a nice guy, but that's not enough to become an Idol. And he knows it.

Laura Fri, May 16, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

Michael,
Thank you for a great interview with Jason! It was really nice to see someone ask him questions that did not have to do with his hair, or 'vote/don't vote.'
Jason's such a sweet, likable, guy, and that's even more obvious outside the machine that is AI.
Every publication should do interviews like this one!

kimconmom Fri, May 16, 2008 at 07:31 AM EST

Thanks, Michael for your insightful interview with Jason. People are misinterpreting what Jason has meant by not being able to do 2 or 3 songs...it's not laziness. He feels the need to connect, nurture and present his music in the most intimate way - not just memorize lyrics and just techniquely singing words! That's what a true artist is all about. I respect him for that. I believe when he is able to truly put his heart and soul into his music, he will present a beautiful CD that will touch us all! Love you, Jason!!!

Lisa Fri, May 16, 2008 at 06:57 AM EST

Loved your interview, Slezak! Jason is my favorite idol from all 7 seasons. He's absolutely incredible and original. His music is all I play now because I love his voice and nothing else compares. Can't wait to see him on the tour (in 2 cities -- never went to an AI concert before, either, but I'll be going just to see him). Also, I will be counting down the days until he releases his first CD.

mags Fri, May 16, 2008 at 03:16 AM EST

Great interview, Slezak; I was worried that you had lost your faith in Jason, but you gave him a chance here to clear up all of the misconceptions the media has promoted about him. I agree with the earlier posters who said you should do a follow up story on him. He's the contestant that AI couldn't let through to the Top 3, lest he upset their David-David finale, so they sabotaged him in every way possible. Jason's unexpected success caused AI to expose itself as a sham (Paulagate)--there's a big story there to tell.

Amanda Fri, May 16, 2008 at 03:09 AM EST

Thanks for a great, insightful intevriew. It seems Jason Castro's downfall on American Idol was that he couldn't just "crank 'em out". My question is: What true artist could?! Jason keeps talking about his "inexperience" but the truth is, even a seasoned pro needs more than "a couple days" to put a good arrangement together and really put their own stamp on a performance. It breaks my heart that he's been so brainwashed and beaten down that he doesn't realize that. I'm glad the interviewer acknowledges many of Jason's good performances, too. To me, he defines talent....able to sing, write, play guitar and drums. It was nice to hear in this interview that he still wants to pursue a music career. Hopefully, he'll be able to hook up with a good producer or record label willing to invest time in nurturing his skills. I'd love to see Jason put some original songs out there so that we can enjoy music full of soul, warmth and originality.

7happydays Fri, May 16, 2008 at 12:09 AM EST

GREAT interview!! You made Jason feel the MOST at ease I have ever seen him on in interview... With Jason's inexperience in the whole musical industry ....I think he came through with flying colors!! After all, in the beginning of AI, that what it was all about, finding undiscovered talent, NOT someone who has already recorded a CD, or someone who has been in singing competitions since they were 8 or ?.... TOO bad AI lost it's way...Jason was the first TRUE talent...once he was gone, so was I, won't be watching anymore(and I have watched since the first season, had NO idea how rigged it was! Lost all respect for the show, especially the judges for playing along) Jason will have an INCREDIBLE future.... he is AWESOME!!! GOD BLESS JASON!!!

Laurie Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:39 PM EST

HI Michael,
From one journalist to another THANK YOU for this in-depth, serious and balanced interview with Jason. You asked excellent questions and gave Jason time to truly respond in a thoughtful way. You covered both high and low points of the season with him and also looked ahead and asked him about his future. Jason's interviewing skills have improved so much and I really think this one with you is one of, if not, *the* best!
Personally, I have nothing but respect for Jason and the way he's handled himself during his entire AI journey. I think his performances were always wonderful when he did his own thing...playing his guitar and letting his voice transport people. Watching his performances in order, you can both see and hear his growth as an artist and as a person. I'm sure that will be even more evident as he performs on the tour.
Thanks again! Your interview is appreciated!!!

SueS Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:21 PM EST

Thanks so much for the Jason interviews with intelligent questions. I'm almost 60, with a college major in music.

Jason is the real deal. He was the only (i)dol to have a unique sound AND who was true to his sense of the music. Something the Davidpimps on idol didn't get.

Hopefully you'll do some followup interviews with the only Idol worth listening to.

Laura788 Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:14 PM EST

Thanks Michael for the insightful interview. I loved how you brought up Jason's great Latin flavored version of "I don't want to Cry" Remember how Randy dissed it as sounding like he was at a luau? (Guess he was confused that JC did the Iz song the week before. Unreal!) I also hope that you do a more indepth article about this young artist. Too many misconceptions in the press as well as spun by AI.
Oh and for those who say Jason didn't take the music seriously-- you've got it backwards. It was the reality show world that he didn't take as seriously as TPTB would like.
I think Jason has quite the future ahead--and I am not a teen either.

Gladys Thu, May 15, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

Thanks for this wonderful interview with Jason. I've watched American Idol since Season 2 but I didn't get so hooked with a contestant like Jason did to me. He somehow connected to me when he sang "Daydream" and i fell in love with him eversince. I'm definitely looking forward to his album. In fact, I preordered it at amazon already. =)

Laura Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

He sure seems to be the one castoff everyones talking about. I haven't seen the others covered by the media as much as Jason is! Seems like he has cast a spell!

Nancy Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:39 PM EST

Jason got booted, not because of his singing, but because of all the comments on the internet. That's a shame, I know I was one that voted big time for him until that final night. I quit voting because of the things I read on the internet, and now I'm finding out they weren't so true. If people felt like I did, that's why he didn't get the votes he needed. The Internet can be so crewl......

It IS about the music. Jason Castro has a unique and beautiful sound to his voice. His style reminds me of Jack Johnson whose music is being played on many radio stations. Castro has a voice WITH a message that so many artists are lacking. And to think that he is only 21. He will only get better once he gets into his groove. Ray Lamontagne, one of Jason's favorite artist's music is also being played on an alternative rock station here in the northeast. Love the guys sound and style. Slezak, kudos to you for recognizing an original and up and coming artist in Castro. He is what music should be all about.

Nancy Thu, May 15, 2008 at 06:50 PM EST

Thanks Michael! There were only a couple interviews w/Jason that could even be considered substantive in the least; this was one of them. Thanks to the ugly IDOL media spinning machine, Jason was one of the most misunderstood of all the contestants and yet one of the most beloved by his fans. I hope you were able to realize after the face to face that it is possible for a person to give it "everything" and still walk away w/a smile...

Jason's just got a tremendous sense of self, integrity, and a purpose that goes far beyond the Idol stage. It may be hard for the gen'l public to understand -a public that was so quick to judge him merely b/c of his hairstyle & laid-back personality but his artistry and heart was able to shine thru loud & clear for all those that were truly listening... And judging from his consistently stellar iTunes sales, Jason fans are DEFINITELY listening.

LOVE you Jason!! Just waiting for that CD to drop! And looking forward to "our future together" too!

hey, cc Thu, May 15, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

First, I hope by the time I hit cougar age, they come up with a better word. Second, your truth is not necessarily the truth. Third, oh, forget it, life is too short. He's a talented handsome guy. He'll figure it out or he won't, but no reason to get mean or weird about it.

CC Thu, May 15, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

A lot of cougars on here. Ewwww!
You swooners really need to get a life. This pretty boy is a flash in the pan who doesn't take music seriously enough to make it big. Sorry, but the truth hurts.

Sup Now? Thu, May 15, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

excellent excellent michael. i second the many pleas for a follow-up article... return some of that love castrocopia's been sending you. truthfully, i love all your articles and would very much be interested in an editorial of some sort on what you saw in your time with jason coupled with your previous impressions of his artistry. he was so many people's idol this year. i don't think he ever gave up, but its not surprising if he was starting to burn out on the idol machine.

Leilane Cozzi Thu, May 15, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

Michael - you're the man ! I want to be the president of your fan club! That's what we were waiting for - really good questions.
I can't thank you enough.
But why was it 3 parts ONLY??? Can we have Jason here everyweek for the rest of our lives???
Pleeeeeeeeease - Think about it.
Love you Michael, GREAT job.

pam Thu, May 15, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

What a great interview, Michael. I read you ever season!....You can't be disappointed in him anymore. You heard how much effort he puts into his music...far from lazy. He's intelligent, honest and so refreshing. He answered you questions in just those way, intelligently and honestly. Can't help but believe that, given the chance, he can only get better!!

Kat Thu, May 15, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

Michael, I take back what I said about your other blog on Jason. I hope you learned by speaking with him that what you posted in your other blog was just not true. The interviews were great. Now I hope you will consider doing another interview with Jason because I cannot get enough of him and I am a 50 something lady, no teeny bopper. I can't wait til his CD comes out. I think Jason will be around for a long long time and will outshine any of these contestants that are left including the final 2. Syesha is a distant memory and should have gone a long long time ago, certainly before Jason, lyric flubs and all. (I don't think she really came in #3 at all...whats she have? 5 fans?) He's an artist, she is just a common singer with no particular talent.

wh Thu, May 15, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Who's David Cassidy?

amanda Thu, May 15, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

Thanx michael for that interview, i think all of his fans were waiting for that. PLease PLease do a follow up interview to see how he is doing and when we can expect an album. Love ya jason Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!

WhatUp?? Thu, May 15, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

Have any of you ever heard a song for the first time on the radio, from a total unknown, and it really clicked with you? Well fact is, if you had never set eyes on Castro and heard his Idol tunes for the first time on radio, you'd be saying..Big Deal! You seem to be more enamored by his appearance and personality than by his actual music. He has you under some kind of Idol spell and sadly enough, you're all acting like a bunch of teeny boppers drooling over David Cassidy... ugh! It's mind boggling!
It's about the music people.....the music!!!

ELSIE Thu, May 15, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

I believe that Jason is just a down to earth -what you see is what you get kind of guy which is what I love about him. His sense of humor along with his unique personality lets me believe that there is more to him than just his singing. He stayed true to his own style of music which I appreciated. Hopefully we will be seeing more of Jason Castro in the near future!

Delraygirl Thu, May 15, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

Thanks Michael...can't get enough of Jason...can't wait for his album. Would love a follow-up interview to see how he is progressing.

To: fan Thu, May 15, 2008 at 11:36 AM EST

I think you hit the nail on the head. He was never in it to win, just to get noticed. I guess that's ok but he's too passive to make it in this business for any length of time. He might sell an album or two, then he'll be done, content to serenading his friends around the fire.

NikkiB Thu, May 15, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

Great interview Michael. Now I have to go back and listen to my Jason Castro playlist on my ipod. Good luck Jason. I'll be waiting for your CD.

Laura Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

Thanks, Michael. Great interview. Jason is a true gem. It was refreshing to see raw, undiscovered talent, with a passion for music on American Idol for Season 7. Jason made the season worth watching. I wish him well for the future. I look forward to buying his music.

I hope that the swaybots will be banished next season. They were irritating to us, the TV viewing audience.

Michel, aquaeyes26's suggestion for a follow-up article by you on Jason was an excellent idea. Please do it. Thanks.

fan Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

I was an adoring fan. Jason was a dissappointment. His looks and charm didn't give jim the dedication necessary to be a great singer or rocker. He became lazy and instead of giving his all back to his tremendous fan base. . . he was out there goofing off. What a disappointment!

ANTM Freak Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:50 AM EST

To be fair the swaybots are just a bunch of bimbo sorority girls bused in from nearby schools and they're mandated to do the ridiculous arm waving and general squealing. I hope Uncle Nigel wises up and gets rid of the pit from hell for next season. I loved this interview of Jason, the dude is humbled and completely unaffected unlike some of the previous people we've seen.

DArlene Thu, May 15, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Thank you, Michael Slezak!!
Thanks for asking Jason a serious question about his music! What a radical you are! Asking him how he came up for the arrangement of the Mariah Carey song was an AWESOME idea. I'd like to point out the fact that he came up with his own unique arrangement. He didn't cover somebody else's cover. Jason is an incredibly unique and talented artist who knows what he likes and what he's about.

UGH Thu, May 15, 2008 at 07:31 AM EST

And that's the kind of fans everyone wants, the ones who are 'moved by the music', not starry eyed one's just adoring him because he's cute. Those swaybots are a total manipulative embarrassment to the show and I hope we don't see them there next year.

seattle_girl Thu, May 15, 2008 at 03:37 AM EST

Great interviews Slezak!! Thanks for digging into the real issues (swaybots!) that interest us instead of yet ANOTHER question about his dreads (yawn). Yours and Rolling Stone have been the two standout interviews since Jason's departure. You dug beneath the stale flotsam to actually look for some "new" news. THANK YOU! And you're killing me with the hot molten lava trailers, effects, Bambi and teletubbies!

aw Thu, May 15, 2008 at 02:18 AM EST

... and loved your finale trailer. Bring it on!

aw Thu, May 15, 2008 at 02:16 AM EST

and then there was that cheesetastic DC/MJ chest bump. We're talking gold in them thar group songs!

aw Thu, May 15, 2008 at 02:15 AM EST

- was thinking, for example, of Jason's last group song, Reeling in the Years, where at the beginning, he high-fives DC and slides into place...

aw Thu, May 15, 2008 at 02:13 AM EST

Here's an idea, Slezak. Since Jason said he got a kick out of the group songs, you could do a (funny) mash-up of them this year, and dedicate it to JC - cause his fun-loving spirit seems to be the best way to take them... Vive la cheese!

cimagato Thu, May 15, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

Sigh... Oh, and you looked really cute, too, Michael.

Clara Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:56 PM EST

I have really enjoyed the interviews with Jason. I have not really watched AI except for the first season but started to watch this season because of Jason. I enjoyed that he was a true newbie who did not take himself too seriously. And at the same time, I also enjoyed how he aimed to connect emotionally to songs and have really enjoyed his studio recordings. Add his lack of guile and that made me a big fan.

Michael- I think you did a great job in the interview (as you have with the other contestants). You have been a fan of Jason all season, and I think fans can have weeks of disappointment when they are invested in someone. I have enjoyed how honest you have been about your ups and downs of fandom with Jason. (And the other contestants as well, but in particular with Jason.)

I hope the best for Jason and really hope that he finds contentment in the music industry. I really enjoy how he needs and wants to connect to songs at a deeper level and can only wish him success.

Jandra Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:54 PM EST

Thanks so much for the Jason Castro interview. He has something that's real and natural and it appeals to people of all ages. I listen to his music and it just puts me in a better mood. Best of all, he's very humble and grateful for all the attention he has received. I hope he has a long and wonderful career.

Kathy Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:45 PM EST

I just love him. He doesn't have a pretentious bone in his body, is so sweet and bashful and had a wonderful voice. He was sorely missed this week on Idol. What a boring show it was without him. Now they got their D vs D finale. How mundane. Jason, you are the real winner!

aquaeyes26 Wed, May 14, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

I thoroughly enjoyed your interview with Jason. Are you planning on writing an article expanding on your impressiosn of Jason after the interview? There is so much misconcesption about Jason "out there," some of which has been perpetuated by TPTB at Idol, some of which you, yourself, perpetuated with your reveiw of the Top 4 ("he gave up" "he let his fans down"), all of which could negatively impact Jason's opportunities for a record deal. You seem to be a true fan of his (who briefly lost his way) and what you write NOW, after having had a chance to get to know the real Jason, could go a long way towards righting some these wrongs done to him adn help keep his momentum alive. WE need him to come out with his own music as soon as possible and a good record deal is imperative. Please consider writing such an article.
