Ghostface axed from 'Iron Man'? How could they!

Ghostfacekillah_l Forget Robert Downey Jr. Never mind that admittedly awesome trailer. The real reason I was looking forward to seeing Iron Man this weekend was, of course, Ghostface Killah's reported cameo. But word got out this week that the Wu-Tang rapper's character doesn't show up in the final cut.

Aw, man! Why'd they do Ghost like that? Seeing him and RDJ share "an exchange about lending each other yachts and Bentleys" whilst partying in Dubai would have meant so much to us fans. And Ghost really deserved this. By naming his first album Ironman and obsessively referring to himself as "Tony Starks" in song for the following decade, he singlehandedly made a second-string Marvel character cool again. (To a generation of kids who don't know from Sabbath, that is.)

And now, after a career's worth of pro bono product-placement work, Ghost gets bupkis. That SOHH story linked above says that director Jon Favreau made it up to him by commissioning an original Iron Man-themed rap song for the movie — which I guess could help salve the pain caused by his on-screen absence a little bit. In the meantime, I'll have to content myself with "We Made It" (below; lotsa NSFW language), a vintage Starks performance featuring what appears to be sampled dialogue from an old Iron Man cartoon. Anyone else wondering what a rapper's gotta do to score a cameo in a superhero movie?

i was disappointed with ghost face being left out. All i wanted was 30 second cameo and couldn't even get that. He kept the ironman alive. It's kinda like not letting derek jeter throughout the first pitch in the new yankee stadium 20 years from now.
jon faveareu whatever his name is sucks!

ghostface is the effin man, anyone doubting or hating is a total retard, he is extremely creative and innovative, the most consistent of the wu-tang solo artists (save for maybe method man). Supreme Clientele is one of the all time great rap albums, and this movie was awesome without him, but a cameo from him would've been ILLMATIC (Nas, I know, but even Ghostface shouts out to Nas on "The Champ" f/ Fishscale). Plus - Tony Stark is easily the sickest alias of all the wu-tang clan. Ghostface is the man.

I was hoping to see the cameo in the film, but as a marvel fan boy and a wu-tang aficionado was not disappointed in it being cut. It didn't by any means ruin the movie, it would have been nice to see ghost on screen but it was fine without. As for the statement that if it wasn't for Ghostface many would not know of Iron Man, thats bullshit. The Iron Man Cartoon in the 90's wasn't huge but was syndicated on cartoon network. The Avengers animated movies are hot sellers, as well as t-shirts and posters which can be found everywhere.
Maybe ghost will make Iron Man 2 or the Avengers movie if that EVER happens.

Im glad he didnt make it, A) music is horrible. B) i hate when people who have no business in movies show up in movies.

duff Mon, May 5, 2008 at 11:25 AM EST

what is the name of the ghostface song in the movie and where can i get it?

Murray Sun, May 4, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

When Downey Jr gets on the plane and is drinking and partying the tv behind him has a Ghostface video playing. So he is in the movie for a few seconds. Ghostface is one of the only creative non-commercial rappers left. You people commenting negatively about him have no idea what you are talking about. Go back to your Will Smith songs and 50 cent videos.

I wanted to see ironman and see ghostface. damn, it sucks ghost dont get his due.

Randy Sat, May 3, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

You're absolutely right Mark. If it wasn't for Ghostface, I wouldn't even know who the IronMan character was. Hearing about it in his raps for so long is the reason why I had even the slightest of interests in seeing the movie, and I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't know about IronMan if not for Ghostface. That movie company is plain wrong for taking him out of the final cut. WRONG!

Mark Sat, May 3, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

People have no integrity nowadays. That's the only thing that would explain why someone wouldn't give Ghostface his due when it came to his cameo. That's why people should wise up and ask for a check to be cut before keeping a brand alive for someone else. People, in this case a company, are quick to allow others to endorse them, but not as quick to show some love back!

who cares? Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:10 AM EST

Who cares!! Most people who went to see Ironman didnt see it because of Ghostface. People saw it because of the badass trailers they put out. No one even knows who Ghostface is. Maybe he should of thought twice before naming his album and devoting himself after a fictional movie anyways haha

I told people that I saw the movie and that was one of te first things people asked me "was ghostface in it?" you dont have to like rap but realize this guy did alot in making the Iron Man character popular

I didn't realize that Ghostface had shot a scene in "Ironman." That would have been brilliant. Cameos aren't a neccessity but they're a nice little surprise. If Hal Sparks can make it into a "Spiderman" movie, then they could have at least left Ghostface in.

I love Jay's comment: "Oh, it's entertainment, aka, crap." You are aware that you're on the website for the magazine entitled "Entertainment Weekly," correct? So don't sh*t on Simon's post just because you're not a hip hop head.

I want Simon's next PopWatch entry about how everyone who thinks rap is crap keeps cluttering up his comments.

Murph Thu, May 1, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

Since I am looking forward to seeing this movie, I am grateful this clown was cut out.

Yeah, be white.

T-Rex Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

"Anyone else wondering what a rapper's gotta do to score a cameo in a superhero movie?" Take out Will Smith?

ceej Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

>>Anyone else wondering what a rapper's gotta do to score a cameo in a superhero movie?<<

How about create a layered, viable, compelling, and successful comic book CHARACTER first, rather than settle for wack cameos and piddly promo tie-ins, hmm?

Jay Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

What kind of marvel character is Ghostface I asked. Oh, he's not. Then, why is this news. Oh, it's entertainment, aka, crap.

Karl Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

Check out my beava!

Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

Really...who watches a movie just for a cameo character?

Jack Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:46 PM EST

I like Wu, I like Ghostface, but I don't give a phuck.

Me Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

Thank god! Listened through first 30 seconds of the song and I am glad he was axed out. At least someone still has some sense of taste.

haruto uzimaki Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:41 PM EST

it's stark, fool, not starks.

pfft Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

good, didn't know him and now that I listened to 15 seconds of his song I am glad he isnt in the movie.

Dan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

uh, who is Ghostface?

J. Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

I don't need celebrities or their alter-egos mucking up my super-hero movies by making cameos. Don't really care if he made and Ironman song either.

nathan Thu, May 1, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Tragic.

Ceballos Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

Maybe (hopefully) on the DVD?

It's a shame, but it doesn't really seem like a major loss (especially if I can watch his scene on a DVD eventually). I kinda like that Iron Man is only a little more than two hours long, so, while it might've been cool, I can't cry for the loss of a scene that didn't seem crucial to the plot.

wordgirl Thu, May 1, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

i knew i could count on you for coverage, simon! i was hoping to see ghost in the movie b/c of his alter ego. what a disappointment.
