David Cook on arranging songs, fighting the 'smug' label, and baiting cougars!

May 29, 2008, 12:27 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion, Idolatry, Music

David Cook fans, the wait is over! In part 1 of his Idolatry interview with Jessica Shaw and me, the reigning American Idol champ admits he "put a wall up" for the first two weeks of the season 7 semifinals; in part 2, he gives a detailed breakdown of how he came up with his fantastic arrangement of Mariah Carey's "Always Be My Baby"; and in part 3 (after the jump), the rocker dude discusses his transformation from average guy to world-class cougar bait! (Check back tomorrow for two more Cookie interview segments, plus our chat with Syesha Mercado!)

TURNED OFF Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

I don't think he will make it big in the music industry. He is just SMUG, COCKY AND ARROGANT that kind personality alone will not last in this business. During AI Tour one of the fans was asking him where is this Idol individual and he gave him an attitude and there was an article also in National Inquirer that he went shopping for jeans and he won't let the sales lady close the door of fitting room for he want to show off his bods - customer say something they were just so gross out.

The same writer Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

I remember this is the same writer who dished David Archuleta during American Idol Days but Archie still gave him the opportunity to interviewed him. Archie remain professional and unaffected through out the entire interview despite of everything and the interview went so great as a matter a fact and this writer got completely off guard when he found out that Archie was very nice and very gentelman. I believe to recompensed for what he did he gave David Archuleta a good review on his single: CRUSH. He is one of E.W. machine who always OVER-SELL DAVID COOK. I hope Archie won't give him another opportunity to be interviewed for I don't like this person. There is something in Mr. Slezak that questionable you can just see through his aura. I will leave it all up to you.

CYNDIE Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

Isn't he just the most charming sweetheart you've ever met? His voice just lays me out, so powerful, sexy, beautiful. Color me a Cougar inside and out.

Hannah Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

we all should save our rude comments aleast the Davids (DA DC) are getting to do what they love and having fun...how many of us get to do that enjoy life and enjoy them enjoying their life...it's a waste of time leaving rude comments about two people who we be sucessful any direction their lives take. SIT DOWN RELAX AND ENJOY THE GOOD THINGS IN LIFE

ssw Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

come on people live as one.no need to disrespect the davids you are the only one who are making a fuss.both going to do well. i am a fan of cook but i dont have to say nothing bad about archie.one love people.

sdff Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 01:12 AM EST

guys, dont listen to Denim and other cook bashers, Both Cook and Archie are awesome. We will be seeing them a lot in the future, BOTH of them are talented and they both deserve success. Good luck to both davids

Denim Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 10:30 PM EST

Wow, lots of Cook bashers here, First of all, Cook will do a fantastic job in his Album, it wont be a lame Backstreet Boy type of album, seriously archie fans, all archie can do is sings in one/single key all the time, and laughs for minor reasons, he is an overrated moron. Seriously, find a worthy idol/role model, a good role model needs to have a mind of his own, like David Cook here, Archie is retarded, only the producers and his father control him, he is a robot. Archie will end up as a disney channel singer, or a cruise ship singer, he is a no talent loser anyway, and I DONT REGRET ANY WHAT I'VE JUST SAID.

Cook will be successful

Archie is useless.

cougarslovecook Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 01:37 AM EST

I LOVE Idolatry & Michael is a genius! How cute is David Cook??? Cute enough to make me feel like I am a kid again and in LOVE for the first time. Crazy enough to start a fansite at 50+ years old! Come share the COUGAR obsession at www.cougarslovecook.com for all the latest David Cook news, videos, photos, forum & store

Brenda Robertson Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

Listen up everyone, I have noticed by reading all the comments that most of David Cook's fans are considerate and kind toward DA and his fans. For the MOST PART, they don't leave rude and unkind remarks about DA and his fans. On the other hand, David Archuleta's fans FOR THE MOST PART, are condescending. They leave horrible, atrocious, upsetting, horrendous, rude, uncouth, offensive, boorish, disrespectful, obnoxious and
inconsiderate remarks not only about DC, but his fans as well. This tells me something about the kind of fans each David attracts. I think everyone needs to keep their opinions to themselves unless they are kind. If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all. This country needs to have love for each other. We have enough people in the world that hate us as a whole, and it is no wonder why.

Sandy Moran Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 10:44 AM EST

Frank, Frank, so sad and bitter. your jealousy. Was someone you love bitten by the DC bug?

Cujo Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

I don't know David personally, but I feel like I know him because he really puts a lot of himself out there for us fans. For those people that don't like DC that's your opinion. My opinion is that I love DC's music and I will buy any CD that David Cook puts out. If you like Archie buy his CD. He also has a lot of talent, but probably not a genre I would listen to. Strictly my opinion! The whole idea of American Idol is to find people who have talent and give them a push in the right direction. The whole David vs. David thing is just stupid. They both have great respect for one another and we don't see them bashing each other. They are both extremely talented and it just come down to the majority of the voting chose David Cook. DC shows us he is a real human being and we share the same dream of having washboard abs. I bought slim in six, but guess they meant six weeks. (been in the package six years!) Anywho, Rock on DC!!!

Too Frickin Old DARN IT! Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 01:15 AM EST

I just wish I was single, 25 or so, NO KIDS and unmarried!!! Oh, and David Cook were madly in love with me!!!!!! Life would be perfect!!!

Mary Sat, Jun 14, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

And on the 8th day, God created David Cook --- Amen.

Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

Deborah Woodin I can so identify with you. Although my favorites were "Always Be My Baby" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". The first because he seemed truly vulnerable and so family oriented. The latter because he seemed to be singing to his mom and all Cougars could identify. This is my favorite interview so far. Still checking daily for sight or sound of David. Read he will be on Leno Thurs. and The View Tues. I'll be watching for sure!

Mandie Callahan Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

David Cook is sooooooooo cool. He is the 2nd best american idolist. Kely Clarkson is the first though. But anyway,, he is so awesome B-}

supermart Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

"Little D has just signed on with the same label as this year's AI winner, David Cook (aka Big D), 19 Recordings/Jive Records. “Signing a record contract with 19 Recordings/Jive Records is truly a dream come true,” Little D said in a statement. “I’m really excited to start working on everything.”........ So guys both David's signed a record contract. Would you please, stop fighting?

Sheila Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

David is a doll. He is so articulate and tactful. I think he will be around for a long time.

Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

I'm a huge fan of Chris Daughtry and I agree he is HOT!!!!!!!!David is cute too.

Ina Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 12:01 PM EST

Say whatever, but I believe David Cook will be around long after the year is over. I am a fan of Cook's, just as well as Daughtry and although neither one is hard to look at, its in my car where I will enjoy them the most.

Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

I found some of David Cooks songs when I was adding more song to my MYSPACE PLAYLIST.They must be songs he recorded b4 Idol.Check'em out.

Barbara Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

Gees AIsquirrelly_girl,put it back in your pants.I like DC and all but honestly he is not that cute.Chris Daughtry is definetly HOT,HOT,HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pete Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:30 PM EST

Garth, 44 years is a really long time to be in the closet, it's great that you decided to come out but you might not want to confess your love to Cook so openly, he doesn't really like the idea of the cougars so I'm not sure he's going to be cool with some guy crushing on him either. It's pretty clear that he thinks his fans are freaks and he wants to steer clear of them at all times.

Brokencookie Wed, Jun 4, 2008 at 08:17 PM EST

Wow, David Cook has got to be the most over rated contestant since Taylor Hicks. Another mediocre and slightly dumpy guy that everyone insisted was wildly talented and hot. So hot they even compared him to George Clooney. LMAO! It's amazing that reality TV can warp some people's minds in such a short period of time. Luckily these delusional thoughts will gradually fade away now that the show has ended and everyone must return to reality. Hopefully David Cook still has that bartender degree, cause he may have to put it to use again after this years over. Mediocrity is easily replaceable in the real world, and unfortunately the reality tv season has already ended. Maybe Taylor Hicks could give him some advice on how to handle the inevitable fall out.

cookie Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

You know what? You guys are really starting to freak me out. He's just a guy that you people don't really know. so calm down! OMG Squirrelly is starting to freak me out. But don't get me wrong, I love David Cook! I'm just not stalking him and I don't have a huge crazy obsession with him. At least, not that much. Heh.

GARTH Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

This guy is the REAL deal! I'm a 44 Year old guy that's not afraid to say, 'LOVE YOU, MAN!!"

PicChick Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

David Cook is my middle child's age. My favorite video is when he was singing First time Ever I Saw Your Face .. the shot of his beautiful and very proud mother watching him...just made me tear up with joy. What a proud moment..I a sure there were many but that one just got to me.
I also love the way David articulates. A lot of rockers yell a lot and you can't understand what the lyrics are at all. David Cook will go a long way if he doesn't let all this sudden fame get to him. I can't wait to hear what he writes.

A1Squirrelly_girl Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 11:03 AM EST

misspelled hilarious...isn't that funny?

A1Squirrelly_girl Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

BTW, David Cook, I like you clean shaven best. I'll still take you with the beard, though. Squirrelly LOVES DC!

A1Squirrelly_girl Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Sorry, David, I just had to say it again! I love DC! Gosh, I'm a melting Cookie, every time I look at his picture, hear his voice, or think of him (I think of him way too much). Cookiefie ME, David! If I can't have you, at least I can have your music (sigh). Please put out more cookiefied covers of rock songs...BTW--I LOVED "Dare You To Move," AND when are you going to release "All I Really Need Is You"? You should get with Neil Diamond on writing music, David. "I'm Alive" is hot, too! Growl for just me on "Hungry Like The Wolf," David! I want to smell you, too!

A1Squirrelly_girl Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:53 AM EST

I knew when I first heard David Cook that he would sell a lot of albums. I knew DC was going to win AI, too. I stayed up for 4 hours and voted for him even though I had to get up early next day for work. He is worth it. I hope DC stays a nice guy since he won AI. I enjoy his cheesy acts on "The Best Week Ever," and he was halarious. I have a huge crush on DC, wish he wasn't dating Kimberly C. Don't like her. Don't think she is very smart, and I hate her voice (sounds like Joan Rivers). She sounds like she's yelling at me when I try to watch her on tv. Gosh, David, if you were smart you would date a cougar. We have life experience and are not afraid to enjoy every little part of you...(smile)

Sharry Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 10:07 AM EST

I can't stand these people insulting David Cook! He is the best Idol Winner since Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood! He is has the talent and the intelligence to go very far!

As for Ms. Caldwell, he will soon tire of her. Men unfortunately have to travel this road of going for the wrong ones before they realize what is right in a woman. He is only 25 and men are taught to be so shallow no matter what. David can overcome this because he has a brain. Unfortunately, so many other men do not.

cookiecrumbles Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

Braziliancookie, hate to break this to you but since you obviously don't pay attention Kelly Clarkson from season 1 has already achieved that honor along time ago and she's not the only one that's known world wide. You're giving him credit for something previous Idols have already attained in their careers, it's no wonder people think Cook's over rated.

Michelle Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 10:06 PM EST

David Cook asking Kim Caldwell out shows his stupidity when it comes to relationships. As for his musicianship, I think he is brilliant. He can do so much better than Caldwell. She is nothing more than a D list former idol, with a former DUI arrest. She is loud and obnoxious and loves the spotlight. Total image incompatibility who fans consider highly intelligent. She doesn't represent him well. His association with her makes him look bad.

cookie Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

DC was great and so was DA so I think that people should stop arguing and go outside and live their lives.

braziliancookie Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

Loved the interview, finally new questions. About the haters, please don't waste your time on what you really don't like. David Cook is great and, for the first time ever, an american idol became a worldwide idol. That speaks for itself.

JB Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

Mary-I heard, but didn't see, that he asked Kimberly Caldwell out on air. If thats true, I would call that calculating and attention-grabbing not shy and sincere.

ptnyc34 Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

dcook#1, I did watch the show and am not the least bit naive, but it seems maybe you are or perhaps you just can't handle hearing someone's point of view that is different from yours. Regardless I stand by my comment. The only one who should be rethinking their comment is you. After all you used your rebuttal to insult little David Archuleta. I didn't mention the kid in my comment yet you took the opportunity to insult him. That's rather hypocritical of you to openly make such comments about little David after you just chastised me for my comment. It seems Cook's fans find it acceptable to insult the other contestants for no reason, now that's truly pathetic.

Frank Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

David Cook temporarily filling the void in some lonely housewives lives until something better comes along. On the bright side, they have set the standards very low so he won't last very long. Let's face it, even Taylor Hicks pulled off a #1 debut single on bill boards hot 100. Cook couldn't even manage pulling that much off. That's pretty pathetic. With out a doubt he's the most over rated contestant this show has ever had.

Shereeda Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 07:47 AM EST

btw ..Highland David is a COLLEGE GRADUATE with degree in Graphics Design.. he IS smart and remarkably articulate... so bug off

Shereeda Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 07:46 AM EST

David Cook is simply brilliant soooo nice to watch he's very entertaining on all levels :)

Mary Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 07:14 AM EST

Oh, and I forgot to add – Sunflower – I’M JEALOUS! *grin*
Would be awesome to be any of: his mom, sister, friend, girlfriend, or even daughter (he’ll be a great daddy someday!). Thanks for standing by him!

Reta Culbertson Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 03:54 AM EST

I have never voted for a contestant on AI. But i love the show. And i also think a person should be allowed 1 vote per.person each night.I like the honest comments from Simon,he is also very sexy. Both Davids are good / imagine how good David A. will be when he is as old as David Cook.( lol )Carla was great, keep it going girl.I'm just a 60yr.old hillbilly here in the mountains of Virginia. But i still like good talent.love all who makes the show go so well.

edge Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 03:23 AM EST

I am a fan of the other David. However, I think Cook has great personality that he capitalized on. I can understand the "big brother" label contestants gave him which I think is natural of him. You just have to observe him on stage with the other Idol aspirants to validate this. His appeal to middle aged women I guess was developed during his bartendering days. Great bar tenders have take charge personality and disarming charm. Traits that ensure success! On the issue of his singing however, that's a completely different story!

Mary Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 10:25 PM EST

Well said, Sunflower, and anyone really paying attention would've picked up on everything you stated. I could tell he was shy by his Idol interviews and especially when he asked Kimberly out. Even callous Simon made it a point to "state publicly" that David was one of the nicest and most sincere contestants they've ever had. I just hope that he knows that America loves him and that he'll let the negativity roll off. Like he said, "Whether you're pleasing or pissing everyone off, you're doing something wrong." Keep doing what you're doing, David, because your true fans know who and what you are. God bless you and your family.

Me Too Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

Highland = David Cook Wannabe?

octoberchimp Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

Charisma, pure and simple. He's saturated with it.

Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

Highland...you are THE definition of an idiot

Louise Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

Highland- my point is simply that I don't understand expending energy on watching an interview with someone you clearly don't like, and then commenting on it.Wouldn't you rather be watching someone you enjoy? What's the point?

I'm not sure that his comments about the Mariah Carey song were disrespectful- he said that she'd recorded a pop song, and that he wanted to do something different, and that most people wouldn't expect a guy to do much with a MC song- wasn't he just saying that he'd made an unexpected choice and that he wanted to show what he could do with it?

As for the spelling bee comparison...sorry, it doesn't really hold up.The kids who enter the spelling bee are certainly very bright, but you can still be articulate without using some of the obscurer words tested in that competition.

Sunflower Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

How can any of you say David isn't humble? Since I CAN speak on this, I know David, and let me tell you, he's nothing most of you haters want to say he is. He is an extremely nice person. He is an intelligent human being, whom is well mannered. He's worked extrememly hard all his life, and he has immense love for his family and friends, and his passion is the love of music. If any of you know him, you would know this. He has a kind heart, and is extremely funny. Everything that the Idol contestants spoke of him is true. He's a joke cracker, but he can also hold an intelligent conversation, and when it comes to work, he works hard, so he won't disappoint you on his music career. He loves all his fans whom voted for him and expresses great gratitude everyday. He HONESTLY wasn't expecting to win, because he knew Archie was amazing, and he even gives credit to Archie. When you think he's being 'smug,' he's not, he's shy. When you get to know him, its like you've known him for years.

Me Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

Highland...I think the word nerd phrase came around from Cook himself when he was doing one the the interview segments they play before the singers perfomrm. One of his hobbies is doing crossword puzzles, so he likes words. He does come across well-spoken and fairly intelligent to me though. As for being "humorless"...he seems very tired to me. I'm sure it was a very long week for the winner, with little sleep.

As for the other poster who seems incredibly bitter and angry about Cook's mere existance...wow, life must suck for you. Perhaps you should focus a bit more on the postive side of life, and get over whatever your issue is with others enjoying the rise of the career of someone they like.

andre Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

Hai guys, have a look to michael johns performence again. Than you see who is the real winner. With all respects for the cookies

Highland Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

I almost forgot! Michael Slezak, thank you for the "I love your wedding ring!" interjection. So, so funny. And so well-timed, as that humorless David Cook was putting me to sleep. I just don't get it. You guys are acting like he's some kind of spiritual leader or something. Pull it together, folks.

Highland Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

The handful of comments that are not about "swooning" over Cook (and embarrassing us all) are really not that harsh, Louise. There was a post from Pete that made a lot of sense (David lands on the notes flat), and a more recent poster was right about DC being a bit pompous. What's irritating to me is that Cook is being described as nerdy because of his vocabulary (?!?). He doesn't use "big" words, and the fact that anyone thinks he does illustrates the crisis plaguing our schools. Young people don't read, and they're not required to learn how to use the national language (it's English). DC's not so smart; he just finished high school before mindless text-speak (LOL, etc.) replaced the good old sentence. Word nerds? Try the National Spelling Bee-the real deal. Also, I thought what he said (twice, mind you) about Mariah Carey's original version of "Always Be My Baby" was arrogant and disrespectful. (Final note to David-Sinatra worship is so played, man. Nothing is more trite.)

eva Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

David Cook is without hesitation the best thing to come out of idol so far. The guy has enormous talent, he is very intelligent, humble and a huge heartthrob. He will be a super star!!He has all us women in our 40's mesmerized!!
His mom did a great job!

Louise Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 02:59 AM EST

Some of the comments below about David Cook are really nasty- why waste time on such negativity? If you don't like his music / the interviews, go and do something else. I wasn't a Jason or David A fan but can't imagine posting vile comments about them.
Thanks for David C and David C interviews- I really enjoyed them, both Davids come across really well and thanks for asking interesting questions- I found the Larry King interview with the idols a bit inane.
What's this I keep reading about Michael Slezak leaving EW?..Surely not....?

Sat, May 31, 2008 at 11:51 PM EST

To all of you David cook haters...if you all don't like him so much then why don't you find some talent and try to win next year?

Sat, May 31, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

It cracks me up that if someone has a different opinion of DC, you call them rabid fans of another contestant. You may just be as arrogant as the guy you are worshipping. I can tell you my post has nothing to do with "Archie", as he wasn't even my favorite. He is a hell of a lot more talented than this guy, however.

DC is a bore. He has cliche-filled interviews in which he tries to impress us with his lack of depth by using big words. Pompous-There's a big word for you, DC. He uses the exact same facial expressions on each song he sings (which sound the exact same every time he sings them). He is so studied its obvious he doesn't sing from the heart, but watches himself in the mirror to practice his moves. *Now, I will close my eyes and then open them slowly, dreamily looking into the camera for all the old horny "cougars". Now I should scream and turn my head to mask that I can't hit the note.*

I think he will probably put out one successful album. After that he will become unbearably full of himself. He is definitely not going to age well, and they will have to use even more hairpieces than they are already using to cover unavoidable balding along the crown. And don't argue with me. He IS using fake hair.

JILL Sat, May 31, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

To all of you haters, if you hate him so much why are you watching his interviews just because your little Archie didn't win you gotta rain on everyone eles' parade. So please dont waste our time

JILL Sat, May 31, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

Honest Mary go to hell!

To MoDean Sat, May 31, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

Excellent post. I would like to add a lovely profile as well, a quiet self-confidence, and an old-fashioned air of romanticism. Yikes. DC is somethin' else!

dcook#1 Sat, May 31, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

ptnyc43 you are a very naive person David Cook was the absolute most talented and modest and respectful contestant on the show. You must have not watched the show as intently as the rest of us did. David Archuleta, while immensely talented, was kind of a bore. He was very nice but somewhat boring during interviews and a little standoffish. So you may want to rethink your statement about David Cook because all he was throughout the show was respectful and amazingly entertaining, thank you.

ptnyc34 Sat, May 31, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

This guy doesn't seem to be the least bit humble or even grateful that he won the contest. And he is definitely the most over rated contestant, all the praise seems to have gone right to his enormously large head. Man is he going to be in for a rude awakening after his reality TV fame quickly fades and reality takes over again.

Jean Sat, May 31, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

Come on people what is this cookie crap? When you call him that you sound like a sap.Stop feeling insecure with your selves DC is just another person.

Honest Mary Sat, May 31, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Many of you flip floppers are talking about DC like he was better than Jesus. He is just another guy who many of you voted for over and over again in the same night. Many of you did not know he was alive until Simon the know it all started pushing him.
As for his looks he is not too bad looking but always looked like he just came off of a trash truck he never looked neat. DA is the singer and veryyyyyyyyy good looking too. He will make the girls swoon while DC will make them deaf with his screaming. AI will never be fair to the singer until they find away that there is one vote a person. DA & Carly were the two best by far.Thats my story and Im sticking to it and dont think because DC won he was the best.I still wish DC the best if he cleans up some.

Pete Sat, May 31, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

I thought it was pretty obvious the reason he used rearrangements that people weren't familiar with was due to the fact that he doesn't have the best vocals and tends to go flat. If he actually attempted the songs as they were originally written everyone could easily hear how inconsistent his vocals really are and also that he screams and strains for all of the higher notes because they would be able to instantly compare the two. It's difficult hear the mistakes when the song sounds completely different. That's really the most effective way to trick the average listener, and it really worked for him. It just goes to show you how easily people can be duped.

Becky Sat, May 31, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

I have to laugh because so many people all said the same thing about Taylor Hicks, and look what happened to his career. On reality TV Cook may be a catch but in reality he's anything but. Seriously Cook's working a major comb over, he's kind of dumpy, and his personality is lacking. He won't maintain this same level of popularity after this initial Idol PR campaign push because he doesn't stack up in the real world. Don't forget People magazine had Taylor has the sexiest single after AI ended 2 years ago. Most likely, the only thing that will come out of this is that Cook's over sized cranium will get even bigger, along with his belly. I swear reality TV makes some viewers totally delusional.

Veronica Sat, May 31, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

I do not think David Cook was appalled by being a cougar bait. I too found it cute when Cookie thanked Shaw for saying he was "a good kisser." I think he really is a shy person. He's learned to overcome his shyness, but he's still shy.

Bestmouthever Sat, May 31, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

Check out Best Week Ever on VH1. He's hilarious in it.

BrazilianVicki Sat, May 31, 2008 at 08:58 AM EST

I'm in love with him!! This interview is great!

I, too, am appalled at the Jessica "I had a dream" comment. If anything untoward had happened, our DC would have handled it adroitly. Either that, or it would have been edited out entirely.
I just turned 55 (proud of it!). Obsessively, I actually voted 1,197 times for Archie in the 4-hour span. Why? He was definitely the best vocalist. Very young, and unfortunately ended up with the wrong type of stage-dad. But David Cook? He is by far the best American Idol (total package) in all 7 seasons. My husband & I wish him, and David Archuleta, too... much success!
I agree...I've replayed these performances 1,000's of times - you are not alone - I somehow feel like I'm a teenager again. Huh? Thanks

socalgirl Sat, May 31, 2008 at 01:44 AM EST

Wuv. I had the dream weeks ago. DC spent the night at my house (with my husband and kids) to "get away from Hollywood for a night." I can only remain calm in the short term because I know that we will be watching this special person for years to come. He's smart - see EW interviews - and hilarious - watch VH-1 to see some SNL-like moments. I'm looking forward to the grammys, oscars, tonys and emmys. You go, dude. And please "play" while you're at it. Have fun, wait for marriage and family 'til you're in your 30s. You're YOUNG! Soak it all in!

Lisa Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

David Cook is awsome!!!! He is one good looking man!!!! When he sang Bllie Jean it made goose bumps come over my whole body. David Cook Rocks!!!!!

Deborah Woodin Fri, May 30, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

I just cannot get enough of "Cookie" - I am 56 years old, have been married 36 years, and until January have had only 2 loves - my husband and Bruce Springsteen. . . .what is going on here? If I'm not on the internet researching for more and more on DC, then I'm listening to the 2 songs I have downloaded on my MP3 player and am just about wearing out - Always Be My Baby and Music of the Night.

I thought I would be over it by now, a week after winning AI, but it's getting worse. Although it's good to know that I seem to be in very good company!

Give me MORE!

Shari Fri, May 30, 2008 at 07:26 PM EST

Looking for the fourth and fifth installment. Did I miss it somewhere. Can't tell you how much I enjoy these interviews and getting to know a bit more about the best American Idol in all seven seasons.

Dartco Fri, May 30, 2008 at 06:34 PM EST

Self: Must.Pack.For.Trip.To.Hawaii! Evil Twin: "NoNoNoNo. Must watch endless clips of DC interviews on net. Must listen to him sing Time of My Life for the 1000th time." Seriously nice interview folks. Finally some uncanned DC commentary. But horrors - he has to sing Magic Rainbow live how many more times?

supermart Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:27 PM EST

I wanted David Cook for the winner, and I am so glad for him. He really deserved to win. But now that all is over, and b/c I was so harsh on Archie, I think that what I most hated was his father, and the terrible pimping of the judges, but even he make the songs look like the same, he really has a voice, and I wish Archuleta the best. No hate for him. I'm pretty sure both David's will be very successful!

laura - Moonlight Fri, May 30, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

p.s ... it is sad that I know this but it is true jaaa

laura - Moonlight Fri, May 30, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

To Laurie .... I don't think David minds being call Cookie after all he has said in interviews that he made up a drink at the bar he was working it was call 'The Cookie' .

Laurie Fri, May 30, 2008 at 02:53 PM EST

I wonder how David feels about being called Cookie?! My maiden name was Cook so I was called that all growing up and I HATED it! I couldn't wait to get married so I could change my name! Although, now that I think about it....hmmmm...should David decide he'd like an older woman..I'd go back to that name in a heart beat! :)))

Cookiebr7 Fri, May 30, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

Great Interview!! Love, love, love David Cook! And that Jessica, I got scared too when she stood up and made the comment about her dream...but I had one too! Is it okay to admit that??

CS Fri, May 30, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

Parts 4 & 5 have been posted - just go under News/Popwatch

Made Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

Are parts 4 & 5 up yet? Thanks for this amazing interview :D

Laurie Fri, May 30, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

I thought she was getting up to go in for the kiss...I can only imagine what he thought! lol

bfish53 Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

To:Slayed... No you weren't the only one slightly queasy.. . David was probably unsettled by the comment, especially as she stood up...

Ziggy Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

Are you sure you are leaving Michael Slezak?

I'll miss your blog next year!!

econruth Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Minute 2:51 of video #3. That's what makes DC so amazingly hot.

Shereeda Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

ooo David C sooo amazin, witty, articulate, funny, gorgeous... ooo man this list will be never endin hahahahah LUVed the interview ..he had many laughs and yea it's sooo infectious :P

Slayed Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:23 PM EST

I really hope they stop marketing him as the contestant of choice for 40 plus year old horny women. I don't think it is doing him any favors.

Am I the only one slightly queasy by the whole dream confession?

culturelady Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

Hot, hot, hot! What a dollbaby David Cook is! My goodness! He has it all..smarts, looks, talent and humility! I love how he praises all the other idols and is so unassuming. David you are the type every mother wishes their daughter would bring home - come home with me and meet my mamma! Love you, and I hope you have a great time on your date with Kimberly Caldwell! You would make an awesome couple!

leanne Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

congrats alot of people who i chill with were rooting for you. I liked the crackling in your tone when you sing I hope you make a soft rocker album. Im an Archie fan all the way but you can make it.we will definetely buy your album here in Ottawa Cananda. Keep the part you keep saying be true to yourself I agree with that 100%. bye

Jeanne Federspill Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

In respomse to Daniel about David being smug and not complimenting other idol contestants. NOT TRUE. David has consistently praised other singers--in fact, he early on predicted Michael would win because of his singing ability. He had praised D. Archuleta on many occasions!!

Jeanne Federspill Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

Scott Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

Michael & Jessica- by far THE BEST on camera interview with Cook to date. On a week when he's forced to answer the same questions over and over again, you once again demonstrated your ability to bring out the best in your guest.. because you really know the subject (and by subject I mean AI, the fans, the performances and of course, being fans yourselves).

re: Daniel Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

Uh, he complimented Syesha. I called him smug too, but at least get your facts straight.

Laurie Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

I just don't see "smug and arrogant" with David. I always just saw confidence in his ability and maybe a little shock/disbelief when they made such a big deal out of him....but get used to it DC..you are a very big deal!! Can you come over for dinner and party games when you come to Detroit? ;))

Debbie Roberts Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

Thank you for the most intelligent "After AI" interview I've seen yet with David Cook. It was intriquing to see/hear him in something other than the Idol zone. The guy's got talent -- a fantastic singing voice, good looks and charm, and he can answer questions with enough knowledge to back up what he has to say. Congrats on the win, David. It was well earned.

Daniel Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

Even when he trys not to be, He's still SMUG. He complements none of the other idols. It's all about him.

Shannon Jones Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

this guy has class, charisma and a good brain. he is also some fine eye candy and talented....what a package!!!! same age as my son, but i am completely smitten, love him.

Kathy Fri, May 30, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

Great interview! I'm looking forward to the next 2 parts plus Syesha. I'll miss Idolatry.

MISS MISTY Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

DAVID COOK KICKS A--!!!!!!!!!!! HE HAS IT ALL, GOOD LOOKS, GREAT TALENT, AND A STAGE PRESENCE THATS MAKES MY HEART SKIP A BEAT!!!! HE TRUELY IS A STAR, BECAUSE THIS IS HIS PASSION AND IT SHOWS ALL BY ITS SELF WHEN HE PERFORMS... THATS AS NATURAL AS IT GETS!!!!!!!!!KEEP ROCKING!!!!

Kato Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

I have been an Idol fan since the beginning (never missed a week) and I have been really good at calling the winner. I called David Cook the winner by his audition. I have been cheering for him since then and was soo happy when he won.

This is the best interview with him I have seen. It was really what he felt about things, not what the interviewer wanted him to say. Good job folks and can't wait to find the rest

LizM Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

Is it just me, or is it warm in here?

Laurie Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Wow! I haven't had a crush on a rock star since Steve Perry in the 80's! I loved David Cook before this interview..but now I am totally hooked! Can't wait for a poster of him to hang in my office! (Yes, I am a professional and 52) and wish I could get my hands on that gorgeous, smart, funny, sexy boy...yum! (...and throw in a little Jason Castro for taste...lol!)

hmm Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

i love dc - and rock, so dc's actually only ai ive really really liked; but i dnt know wat it is - maybe ive watched him being interviewd 2 much! - but he seems too thought out..& i agree wit jessica in the smugness in the 'i am not smug' answer..lol..still luv dc but never thought id say tis - or it was posible - but liked DA's interview more!..dnt knw, dnt kill me, bt seems answers r more heart-to-mouth..luved the rainbow comment dat DA made-its like he can laugh at wat ppl sed abt him bt dc seemed too defensive at the smug ting..&de snip frm part 4 tat david says abt syesha; david a sed tat same ting abt her on larry king wen tey were all on!!lol!!..ah anyhw guess its the music tat matters and tey both hv the talent to do well!!here s hoping tey do gr8! david c lyk daughtry; david a lyk john mayer!!!well love tem both & luck 2 both!!!tc

rainbow Fri, May 30, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

I like the interview very much. Way to go, Michael. Dug really deep into his music (instead of asking him about his audition, how he started singing) UNTIL Jessica creeped me out by telling DC (and us) that wet dream story. I don't know why she did that. It's creepy. And the way Jessica stared at DC is way too unbearable. I think she almost drooled or something.

CX Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

I still don't know why he had to do the way she said after the Syeesha thing. It was David A who really stroked the casbah after David Cook. I think a cougar is only a teddy bear dressed up in a parka anyway. I hope he sings good on his new album or I won't buy it even though I could be a cougar if I had to.

diana Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

Oh why can't he be 45 and living in my house!!!

DebbieD Fri, May 30, 2008 at 08:51 AM EST

Great interview! Thank you for the excellent questions too.

Liz Fri, May 30, 2008 at 08:30 AM EST

Thank you for this interview!

We are used to getting the same boring question over and over and it's a shame that some reporters are not using their time to make more interviews like this one.

This is the interview we've all been waiting for and deserved. Even Cook deserves better questions than what he's getting. The guy is a PR dream. He has a lot of interesting things to say. It would have been a great shame not to get these answers from Cook to sum up such an amazing idol journey.

Thanks again!

Yelen Fri, May 30, 2008 at 08:17 AM EST

This is absolutely the BEST interview with David I've watched after his win (and believe me, I've watched every. single. one). Thanks so much for asking questions about his arrangements, his thought process on Idol, things that are actually, gasp, important. I can't wait for the next two parts! In fact, I kind of want them, like, three seconds ago.

Miss M Fri, May 30, 2008 at 02:59 AM EST

I am so jealous of Jessica and everyone else who've had David dreams!! LOL. Great interview, great season of AI, the best winner ever, and Michael you're the best! I am a real cougar; 46 yrs old and my last boyfriend was 28. This cougar will buy anything David Cooks sells!

Toni Fri, May 30, 2008 at 02:29 AM EST

hey, I don't know about all you "cougars" out there. I'm a sixty year old woman and I consider myself a "tiger". David managed to "light my fire" with his rich, sultry voice. David Cook is luscious. He has the cutest lips, absolutely kissable. Hey, I ain't dead, yet. I like men--I can still appreciate a handsome man, if only from afar, and David Cook is one sexy dude. To add to his attractiveness, he seem to posess a very solid knowledege of himself and who is is. He does have manners, is well spoken and obviously very intelligent. I appreciate those qualities in a man. You go David, best wishes.

Mik, Seattle, WA Fri, May 30, 2008 at 02:23 AM EST

AI producers must be happy David C won, since he will be the face of AI for the next year. In the interviews I've seen with him, he's been articulate and well spoken. Always gracious towards David A as well. He seems emotionally ready to deal with all the pressures he'll have by winning AI. Makes me like the guy even more.

Justin Castillo Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

To Owen
I'm sure David would perform for cougars, bears, otters and kittens.

Justin Castillo Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:49 AM EST

Go to youtube and see a video of David Cook showing his belly again in Vegas with a dolphin. You know the words to use

Kath Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

I also should probably apologize to Cook for calling him arrogant all season. Hey, if Simon can man up and do it, I can too. So to speak.

Kath Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:46 AM EST

I'm sure this is the only interview David Cook will ever do in which the words "total cougar bait" are uttered. That makes it amazing. I miss you guys, and Idol, already.

wendi Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:40 AM EST

Thanks Michael and Jessica! The setting at the bar was a perfect backdrop. Best interview of the lot he's done this week. Loved how you asked about his thoughts about the different weeks and the. Always be My Baby would be a great track on the CD. Jessica, you were hilarious and I can't tell you how many single and married women of all ages I know who've been openly ogling him all season long and yes Michael, everybody's crazy about a sharp dressed man! These feline categories people are coming up with are too funny. Waiting with baited kitten/cub breath for parts 4 and 5....

sam Fri, May 30, 2008 at 12:07 AM EST

Mo-Dean, you are a genius--you got it just right.

Owen Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:31 PM EST

Who cares about the Cougars! Is there any chance David Cook is gay. And likes older chubby men? BEARS 4 COOK!!

Jules Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:05 PM EST

Best interview I've seen with him yet. Great work.

Justin Castillo Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

To borrow something Josh Hoge said about Elliott Yamin, I haven't had a man crush on an Idol male since EY. Still wonder what to give him when they come to PDX.
P.S. His biggest fashion faux pas was the tux tee on Top 20 results night.

punkie Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

Gosh, Jessica, what are you like 13? That comment was so juvenile, cringe-inducing and unprofessional. Gross. Things like that should be written in your diary with hearts all over the page. And even worse, you stood up to say it, looking poised to pounce. What the hell?

Shari Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:18 PM EST

Loved the interviews. Thank you so much for asking real questions and thank you to David Cook for giving straight answers. One of the things I love most about him is his honesty and his willingness to risk criticism to stay true to himself. He has amazing talent, but he is also just a really nice, down to earth person. Good to see the media whirlwind this past week has not changed that about him.

rhondahi Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:14 PM EST

Loved the interview. Made me love Cook and Slezak. Jessica too.

Amanda C. Thu, May 29, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

Thank you guys for having an intelligent conversation with 'different' questions. You made me laugh quite a few times. I so would never be able to admit I had a cougar David Cook dream to his face ;) Good work guys! Your videos are one of the highlights of my week.

cg Thu, May 29, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

I think Jessica was joking, but DC wasn't sure and looked a mite uncomfortable! lol

He does remind me of an old boyfriend in college who was a guitar player, but DC is about 1000 times nicer, smarter, politer, more focused and together.

I'm 48 and married, but he had me at "Hello" - my daughter too!

Melissa in Baltimore to Jessica Shaw Thu, May 29, 2008 at 09:48 PM EST

BTW, Jessica, I've had that same dream too! I laughed out loud when you told him to his face about it. That was so funny!

AnalogGirl Thu, May 29, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

Thanks for asking some intelligent questions, yay! So tired of hearing about David and Andrew in line in Omaha. Idolatry is great as always!

Melissa in Baltimore to Michael Slezak Thu, May 29, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

Michael, I loved your interview part 1,2,and 3, waiting with bated breath for parts 4 and 5! I've been waiting for some fresh Cook! I've seen, probably, all of his interviews this week and all the interviewers must have all asked the same questions, I was thinking, when are we gonna get some intelligent questions asked of him. Thanks so much!
Once I found out about your Idolatry show, I sat down on this Sunday past and watched every single one. Love it! Love the whole gang! More, please!

DC Thu, May 29, 2008 at 08:42 PM EST

I agree, David's fans are all ages, from 8 yr olds, teens, and adults of all ages. I felt extremely uncomfortable for you Jessica, I don't want to be hearing about your dreams and I'm sure the rest of the interweb doesn't either.

Disgusted Thu, May 29, 2008 at 08:26 PM EST

The true cougars are interviewing Cook. These 2 cougars have unworldly desire to have a threesome with Cook. Yep.

miriam Thu, May 29, 2008 at 08:19 PM EST

I am thoroughly impressed that he does the Thursday NYTimes crossword puzzle. Personally I don't venture past Wednesday.

Jenn Thu, May 29, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

Aw, Cookie needs a hug. He sure looks tired. Don't appreciate the "smug answer" comment from Shaw. And yes, yes, sure we know there are cougars 4 Cook out there, but I'm David's age and it seems like our demographic is being completely overlooked. What happened to completely legitimate 20-somethings being fans of his too? It's not JUST the cougars who helped him win. Anyway, I can't wait for his album to "make the hair on the back of my neck stand up."

to jessica shaw Thu, May 29, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

OMG that comment about the dream and making out with david, i was embarrassed for you. you can tell david looked so uncomfortable afraid she was going to pounch on him. and what was that top she was wearing. looked like a syesha reject ugh. can you tell i don't like ms. shaw ever since she bagged jason with her ambush interview and quote about him wanting to go home.

Great interview. Can't wait for the rest.

As the official spokesperson for all of us women of a certain age who are not cougars or predators of any kind, let me perform a public service and break down the Cook attraction: 1) eye contact reminiscent of old boyfriends from college, 2) old enough that one doesn't feel pervy, young enough that one doesn't feel geriatric, 3) excellent deportment, which includes good manners, integrity, a lovely smile, thoughtfulness toward others, good deeds done quietly, closeness with family, and refusal to angle for sympathy votes, all just as we would like our own sons to conduct themselves, 4) the excellent musicianship and eclecticism that our generation was spoiled by, along with a knowledge of music history that goes back further than Foo Fighters.

Gale Thu, May 29, 2008 at 07:27 PM EST

This season marks a turning point in that the dubious judging panel has officially become irrelevant. Simon declares Archie the knockout champ, then Cook wins by 12 million votes. I can tell what David thought about the judging by watching this video and also by how he walked right past them when he sang the crowning song. I love that he has their number.

Jamie Thu, May 29, 2008 at 07:20 PM EST

Thank you GOD for Slezak not asking David the same questions the other 326 reporters have asked him in the last week. Loved these interviews, can't wait for parts 4 & 5! What a hottie. A SMART hottie.

Amy Thu, May 29, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

Nice interview. Slezak (& jessica) have a wonderful coversational tone and it's great that they are fans of the show. Cook is well, Cook. He is creative and intelligent and uses it wisely. What's wrong with him? We all have flaws. Hope it doesn't come out that he's a freak. It'll crush millions of the hearts who love him.

queen of disrepair Thu, May 29, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

liked him before - but, after watching him get interviewed and perform over these last few days - Love the guy! I hope he records his album and not 19's idea of an Idol album. I saw the Idol tour with Carrie (my daughter was in love with Anthony) and Cookie makes me think I could stand another few hours of screaming PopTart advertising...

BK Thu, May 29, 2008 at 06:57 PM EST

Great interview. I must comment on the Cougar issue. First - that "label" annoys me. I prefer to call it "going Ashton". I'm over 45 (but under 50) and yes his looks attract a lot of woman of all ages, but it's his personality that really has us. I'm single and date occassionaly and this young man could teach a lot of the men my age on how to act, speak and treat other people. It's a rare treat in this day and age of boring older men who need that arm candy. I wish Mr. Cook the best of luck and much happiness in this life changing event. He deserves all the praise he is getting.

cougarcub Thu, May 29, 2008 at 06:44 PM EST

Oh my. I just came back for my second viewing today. What is up with that perfectly fitting chain hitting his adam's apple? Is that not the sexiest thing ever? We are all dreaming of DC, it's crazy. I totally agree he has some voodoo hex on all of us. After 7 years, American Idol finally produced a bonafide IDOL. We (and I speak for all the cougars, cougarcubs, pumas and pyt's out there) LOVE David Cook. Rock on hottie, rock on.

Why oh why Thu, May 29, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

Syesha who? Everyone has already forgotten about that talentless screamer, interview Danny Noriega instead.

To "Music Expert" Thu, May 29, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

Hey "Music Expert"! You have to specify which poster you are addressing as you have several folks on this board ganging up on you! Misspelling a word is small potatoes compared to being prejudiced against a group of people.

Martha Thu, May 29, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

Swoon city. David Cook is the PERFECT man: handsome, confident, witty, intelligent, educated, gracious, kind, and talented. I predict he will sell tons of CDs, and go on to be the most successful Idol winner by a mile. Daughtry who???

Nat X Thu, May 29, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

To To To MusicExpert: It's "smarter than I," not "smarter than me." As in "smarter than I am." SNAP! And David Cook is totally hot and awesome, but might not remain so if he keeps dating AI has-been Kim Caldwell. LAME! Going on one date with someone and mentioning it on national tv? Extra lame!

To To MusicExpert Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

Sigh. Another person who doesn't know how to use your/you're properly. You should've used "you're" as in "you're smarter than me and I'm not capable of spelling let alone analyzing what you're saying because I didn't graduate from high school." Signed, Musicexpert and spellingexpert

Mari Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:33 PM EST

Congradulations David! You deserve all the success I'm sure will follow you soon. Good luck and God bless!!

To "Music Expert" Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

Hey self-proclaimed "Music Expert"!I've got an idea! Instead of getting someone other than Slezak next season - how about you taking your prejudices to some other comment board. Anyone who calls themself "expert" has got to have the word "Tool" across their forehead.
Slezak! Please don't go anywhere - you (and Cook) made Idol worth living thru this season. xxxooo - wendeeloo

To To musicexpert Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

Well, duh, I listened to the interview to hear what DAVID COOK had to say about things, not because I enjoy listening to Slezak. And seriously, Jessica should be suspended for that remark. It's really unprofessional and gross.

Molly Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Great great interview! I agree with the others...it's so nice to see the interviewers ask the questions true fans really want to know, not just the standard Q&A you usually get. I can't wait til tomorrow...

tracy Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

oh god, i adore david cook so much it's stupid. and why do only cougars get any attention, dammit? what about us perfectly eligible twenty-somethings who dream about making out with him? gosh! (tm archie)

to MusicExpert Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

Be nice to Michael. We love him; not too crazy about you. And Jessica is just having fun and we're enjoying it with her. Lighten up.

Shape5 Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

BY FAR, the best post-win interview so far. Excellent job!

cimagato Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

Where did he get this poise? He's impressive in every interview I've seen, no matter what the questions. You'd think he'd been doing this for years. The right guy definitely won.

To: MusicExpert Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

In the words of Stephanie Tanner....How Rude! Why listen to the interview if you don't like the person? Your a waste of space on this board.

GatorGal Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Jessica on the prowl! Way to go for it! That was the best part of an all around fantastic interview.

Katy Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

Thank you, what a wonderful interview. We finally learned a few new things and I appreciate the cougar bait topic as I am a cougar- 45.

Sophie Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

David Cook is the first idol winner who seems absolutley ready to handle all that will now happen in his life. Thanks for the great interview.

Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

I think if you're age 20 up to, maybe, 37, it's ok to have a crush on David...but older than that and it just gets creepy! Ladies, control yourselves! I'm sure the poor guy would like a woman close to his own age..not some 40-50 something walking hormone!

MusicExpert Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

Jennifer reveals she dreamt she made out with David Cook? Illlllll! Keep it to yourself! How unprofessional! And man, it's hard listening to Slezak. He sounds so frickin' gay! Get someone else next season, please!

A cougar named Sarah Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

"Word Nerd" really caught my attention (in a good way). Then when he sang "Hello" I was lost to David Cook forever. I haven't deleted AI off my tivo because I keep playing his performances over and over again. I also watch him while I'm at work on youtube. SO fun to hear others with the same reaction to him. And the icing on the cake...he's seems like a genuinely nice guy. See you in my dreams, David...

astolat Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU Idolatry. I was ready to spork myself if I saw one more inane interview rehashing the same five questions over again. The life of an obsessed fangirl is hard. :/ PS: Idolatry covers the Idol tour? I still hold out hope. You know you want to see Carly live again!

RB Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

Just great!

joannmski Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

Thanks to Slezak and Jessica for the very best Cook interview I've seen! (and admittedly, I've seen way too many). At last, interviewers who know more than the fans. Super, super job.

Melissa Thu, May 29, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

First thing I noticed in part 1 was Jessica working that sparkly top and, and then lo and behold, in part 3 she makes her move. Jessica, you tart! :)

Deborah B. Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

I have been waiting for this interview and you didn't let me down. Fantastic. David is an amazing artisit, can't wait for his first CD. I hope AI gives him room to wiggle and make it his own. How many of you cougars just skipped a heartbeat thinking about Cookie wiggling. I'm older too but mostly I just want to bake him cookies and fix him dinner. My husband is rolling his eyes!

Kthom Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

Loved him from his very first audition!! I knew AI fans would get it right this year!! He is amazing and deserves everything he gets in life. Word Nerd for life!

andimal23 Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

What an awesome interview...Cook is just so on the ball; he's got his head on straight, he knows what he wants, and he never let anyone tell him "you can't do that" because he went ahead and did it anyway! Can't wait to hear his album when it comes out.

I also just wanted to say thanks to Michael and Jessica for your incredible reporting of season 7, loved every minute of it!

Squirrelly Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Oh yeah, I knew DC would be a great kisser. But in my dream, he thinks I am a great kisser!

Squirrelly Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

I'm not sure I believe David when he says the cougar thing was unintentional. I can't believe for a second that he was unaware of our attraction to him. I felt like he was using voodoo or something similar over the tv waves to draw me to him. I still think about him way too much. It is a rare thing to have that kind of ability to attract women, and the way DC looks into the camera and the way he mouths his words like "looking for love" is totally intentional, and very, very sexy. The TV guitar commercial DC did was a bonus, and very calculating! I will be having DC withdrawals for a long time, and my i-pod and the videos are all I have left. No more AI show to look forward to every week. No new songs from DC. I need DC to comfort ME!

betsy Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

he had me at "i'm a word nerd."

Jennifer Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

I'm mesmerized by the little star swinging back and forth...drifting deeper...deeper...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Sharon Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

Yes I love David Cook. Thanks for the exciting interviews. I can't wait for the next two installments. I have pictures posted all over my office. My friends know I'm a cougar for Cook.

Broadway Baby Thu, May 29, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

I'm sorry - I must have hit my head while swooning - but wasn't that just David Cook signaling his phone number to me?

anne Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

Oh, My, I'm fanning myself right now. SA-WOON! Loved, loved this interview. I knew that Michael would not let me down with his questions and he certainly didn't at all. I love the fact that he isn't self conscience at all. Haircut and 5 o'clock shaow aside this is what really makes him swoon-worthy. as for the dream, Jessica I had that same one during Mariah Carey week. He is a good kisser.

LisaMama Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

LOVE Cook! Thanks for the great interview, Slezak and Jessica.
BTW, I think a cougar is a woman over the age of 35 who is dating a younger man -- I first heard the word used that way on a How I Met Your Mother episode where gorgeous Jane Seymour, playing a professor, dates Neil Patrick Harris, and he calls her a cougar.

NineDaves Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

swoon.

Dan Daoust Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

Makeup!

LoJo Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

WOW. Smart, funny, HOT and talented. How could he go wrong. C is for Cookie and its go enough for me!

Lisa Warner Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

I heart this! It is so nice to not hear the same questions (and answers). He is such a good sport and my o my--cougar bait, indeed! I died when you told him about your dream(my new hero)Jessica! I had the exact same dream (for real). Can't wait for the next installment. You and Slezak are made of awesome. I have looked forward to reading this site's Idol coverage all dang season--the best!

lawyergirl77 Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Thank you Michael and Jessica!! It's amazing how much fun interviews can be, when the interviewers (and interviewee) are *gasp* intelligent and witty people.

The cougar bait discussion still has me giggling! Can't wait until parts 4 and 5!!

Meghan Thu, May 29, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

Awesome interview...it's so nice that you actually ask interesting questions and let him talk for more than a few seconds at a time. All the talk shows ask the exact same questions (and I know because I've watched pretty much every interview - huge Word Nerd right here).

He looks like a good kisser. :)

laura Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

OH! I love this videos!
Thank you Micheal for everything!! ;o)

Love love love David Cook!

Kate Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:50 PM EST

That really was a great interview, funny but very very informative. Man, he's hot.

Jenna Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

What a wonderful, insightful, interesting interview with David Cook. Finally he gets to speak freely and answer relevant questions his fans have been dying to know the answers to, instead of "did you think you had any chance of winning?" for the 400th time!
Thank you ever so much, Slezak and Shaw, for feeding our Cookie craving with a full meal rather than Cookie crumbs. This is delightful, and I can't wait for parts 4 & 5.
Have to love a man who is talented, handsome, and very very smart. Can't wait for the rest of his career to unfold, I'm a word nerd for life.

Sera Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Cougars Unite!!! God he's hot.

Lemonade Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

NIIICE, Jessica! I think it's not just cougars here (or cubs, as cougarcub points out) - I'm 25 and my friends and I are on this train, too! What are we called, kittens? Well, in that case, how about the entire Felidae family for Cook!

juju Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:33 PM EST

I love you, Michael Slezak! You and Jessica both. Wonderful interview.

Karen Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

I laughed my head off when Jessica stood up. I thought she was going to pounce!

coco Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

i'm with cougarcub, ask him if we have a chance! LOL. so jealous of Kimberly Cadwell. You should interview her and get the scoop on the Cookie-date.
BTW, if I'm 32, am I a cougar????
thanks again Slezak!

mamalotus Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

Thank you for finally having an interview that didn't rehash the same thing over and over and over!!! I am also glad someone finally asked him about the Cougar thing. I am a Cougar 4 Cook Word Nerd!

cougarcub Thu, May 29, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

Michael, you are my new hero. Thank you for asking about the cougar bait. Now throw us all a bone and let us know if our hunky cook would ever consider dreaming about all us cougars and cougar cubs (35-40) out here. Yummy. Why does he drive us all crazy anyway?????

Nicole Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

Finally, the Cook interview! I've been waiting (im)patiently for this one. Thank you Slezak & Shaw for asking interesting questions that gave Cookie an opportunity to show his personality and his musical sensibility. How cute was it when Cookie thanked Shaw for saying he was "a good kisser"? Hee!

Love Idolatry... almost as much as I love David Cook!

Tara Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

Oh David, how much do I love you?? Let me count the ways.....

Gwen Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

Jessica Shaw is SUCH a cougar! She scared me when she stood up! Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!

tess Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:53 AM EST

*thud*

coco Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:52 AM EST

OMG!!! what took you sooo long! I've been waiting for this idolatry episode. Thanks, Cook is so yummy, i'm so jealous of you two. Nice try Jessica!!! I had the same dream the night he won American Idol.
OK, I need therapy, LOL!!!
You will always be my baby is my fav Cook song!

Elizabeth Thu, May 29, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

Hmm... lunch with Cookie: thanks Slezak!

What exactly was Jessica standing up to do? "Is she going to maul him?"
