The artists who sound even better acoustic; the lyric you have to belt out whenever you hear it

Bryanadams_l If any of you are in a city where Bryan Adams (pictured) is stopping on his acoustic tour, go. I caught him — backed by only his guitar and harmonica — Saturday night in NYC, and it was so good that I left thinking he should release a live album recorded just like that. His 11th studio album, 11, hits Wal-Mart and Sam's Club exclusively on May 13. Listen to the album cuts of "Oxygen," "Tonight We Have the Stars," and "I Thought I'd Seen Everything," then tell me if Adams' intimate lyrics and raspy, echo-filled vocals aren't almost more powerful stripped, as heard here, here, and here.

Adams played the New York Society for Ethical Culture's 800-seat Concert Hall, a converted church (with cushioned pews) that he referred to as one of the most beautiful places he's ever performed. Lucky for him, there's no religious iconography left in the auditorium, because that man would have burned: If not for the fact that he wrote "Heaven," in two days (!), for the 1983 Christopher-Atkins-stripper movie A Night in Heaven, then because he sings about nothing but sex. I'm sure I'd have earned myself a ticket to his next concert in hell when I wished ill on the man seated behind me — he kept yelling "Musketeer!" because he couldn't remember the name of the song he was desperately trying to request, "All for Love" off The Three Musketeers soundtrack. But at least those impure thoughts I had during "Run to You" (embedded below, from a March performance at St. James's Church in London) should have scored me a VIP package:

So, which artists do you think sound even better acoustic? And, in honor of my not being able to control my volume when Adams got to the "And that's when I met you, yeah" line of "Summer of '69," name one lyric you must belt out whenever you hear it.

darrin Wed, May 14, 2008 at 07:41 AM EST

sticking with the adams theme:

"so damn easy making love to you" from RUN TO YOU

not to mention every time he does his "yeah" in the slower songs!

lulu Sun, May 11, 2008 at 08:46 PM EST

Jewel is amazing in person. Who knew?

Meg Sat, May 10, 2008 at 11:26 PM EST

--Thanks to "Old School", I now inappropriately add cuss words to Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart"
"F'ING EVERY NOW AND THEN I FALL APART!"
--"Word to your mutha!"
--"ICE COLD!"
--"Shake it like a Polaroid picture!"
--"B.I.G. PO-PPA, no info for the D-E-A"

I saw Bryan last night (May 7/08) in Buffalo for his acoustic gig, and it was fantastic! I love it when Bryan plays acoustically during regular gigs, but to see a show that is all acoustic was very unique and quite enjoyable.

Celimene Wed, May 7, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

When I saw Radiohead in 2003, everyone seemed to scream "Bring down the government!" During "No Surprises". Wishful thinking?

Kerri Wed, May 7, 2008 at 09:24 AM EST

This probably doesn't count, but every person I know does the exaggerated air drums to Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight". You just can't not do it.

David Wed, May 7, 2008 at 01:16 AM EST

Dear Mandi, didn't Adams already released an MTV Unplugged Album? can you say "fact-check?"

stephanie Jones Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

"dial 1-900-mix alot and kick them nasty thoughts.." you must sing this while doing the motion of dialing the phone.

"Tin roof...Rusted" of course before this line you have to sing "Bang Bang on the door baby" While you bang on an invisible door.

Yelling "YOU" louder than the rest of the line "...shook me all night long"

Something horrible happens to Jason Mraz when he walks into a production studio. He even sang about it for the completely tongue-in-cheek "Wordplay" that EW's reviewer hated so much. Live, with just his guitar and Toca, he's beautiful. I think the geek gets overgeeked about the production. I'm buying all the acoustic live EPs he puts out because those studio albums, man. MR. A-Z nearly turned me off completely. That said, I do belt out "AAH-AH-I WON'T WORRY MY LIFE AWAAY-HEEY-OHOHOH" if I'm on the 5 or 101 and the windows are open.

Pamela Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

I pretty much sing aloud to everything. So, here's some faves..

"...Makin love to his tonic and gin" I then quite happy to yell out the "la de das" in the song too. (The Piano Man, Billy Joel).

"You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
When I met you" Dont You Want Me, Human League.

"Dont' touch me please, I cannot stand the way you tease. You hurt me though I love you so, now I gonna pack my things and go." Soft Cell, Tainted Love.

Houstonian Jen in DC Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

Destiny's Child "Bootylicious"
"I'm about to break you off, H-TOWN GOIN' HARD" ...I do it so much it's like a disease!

Heather Tue, May 6, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

Jason Mraz. Sounds fantastic.

Against Me! Because even without electronics, they still sound so kick-ass

Arctic Monkeys. Just because I love Alex Turner's accent.

ary Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

Bad Habit by The Offspring:
"...complaints cease, something's odd, i feel like i'm God you stupid DUMBSh**GOD****MOTHER&*!@"

ilove that line...

MD Tue, May 6, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

Just like the white winged dove - oooh - baby oooh said oooh
and totally any line in Don't Stop Believing.
MB20 rocks acoustically!

NanFan Tue, May 6, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

Best acoustic set I ever saw was Nirvana.
My best shout out line:
Oh my my, Oh Hell yes, gotta go put on your party dress

Kevin Tue, May 6, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

Billy Joel
"He's talking with Davy, who's still in the navy, and probably will be for life"

"The waitress is practicing politics, as the businessman slowly gets stoned. They're sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it's better than drinkin alone"

Outkast
Ice Cold!
Caroline!
Craaaaaaaaash...into a ditch (just playin)

Kanye West
And they gon keep callin and tryin but you stay right girl and when he get on he leave your ass for a white girl

There are others I just can't think of the moment

rls Tue, May 6, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

Martha - you're right. "On your knees boy" is the best part!

Martha Tue, May 6, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

I usually must belt out key lyrics to my current favorite song, whatever that is...especially in the car. Right now that's "Throw those curtains wide...one day like this a year and see me ride!" from "One Day Like This" by Elbow. Great stuff. And anything from "The Final Countdown," of course.

Martha Tue, May 6, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

RLS, what about the "on your knees, boy!" at the end of that "Mysterious Ways" lyric? That's the best part!

Maureen Tue, May 6, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

I agree with Ames -- that line in "You Oughta Know" does get sung along to whenever I hear that song.

Ames Tue, May 6, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

"Every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back I hope you feel it -- can you feel it?!"

rls Tue, May 6, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

"If you wanna kiss the sky you better learn how to kneel". Mysterious Ways, U2

Sports Chick Tue, May 6, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

I have 3 lyrics:

"She never mentions the word addiction ..."
"Bottle of red, bottle of white..."
"Glory days ..."

Bruce Springsteen and John Mayer both -- love to hear them play acoustic!

Jon Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

"I got friends in low places...."

Ya'll know the rest.

Lindsey Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

"And I'm Freeeeee.....Free-fallinnnnnn"

Lena Tue, May 6, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

GingerCat---are you familiar with the Lonestar cover of the song? I was so upset when they changed that line! They left out the word "child" and I was like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa!" the first time I heard it. It threw off my shouting in the car that night when it came on the radio, I'll be honest!

Tina Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Billy Joel... "and the piano it sounds like a carnival / and the microphone smells like a beer..." or "JFK blown away, what else do I have to say!"
The Monkees... "You look just like her you do / I know by lookin' at you / that you've been listening to your Auntie Grizelda"
Queen... "Thunderbolts and lightning / very, very frightening me... he's just a poor boy from a poor family..." -- yeah the whole 'Wayne's World' bit, really.

As for acoustics... I agree on Rob Thomas/Matchbox Twenty and Hanson. Jewel, too. She started mostly acoustic -- but when it's just her and her guitar it's so simple and melodious.

Jen Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

Gimme a sister, I can't resist her. Red beans and rice didn't miss her.

But pretty much the whole song, too.

Rachel Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

Aimee Mann Aimee Mann Aimee Mann, she did an acoustic tour a couple years ago and it was so good, every song gave me goosebumps.

Stephanie T. Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:08 PM EST

Elvis Costello sounds better acustic.

Cum On Feel Da Noiz,Girls Rock Your Boys!

I wanna Rock!

I don't cry when my dog runs away, I don't angry at the bills I have to pay.

I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, that much is true.

Pop, pop, pop musik!

I don't care if monday's blue...

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

My an-da-con-da don't want none unless you got buns hon'

GingerCat Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

I'm with Lena--I always belt that line from "Walking in Memphis."
As for who sounds better acoustic--in my opinion, everyone who's got talent sounds better giving a stripped-down performance without a lot of bells and whistles. The only people who don't sound better this way are the people whose talent is created in a recording studio with software. I think we all know which artists are which.

Sarah A Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

"Tramps like us, baby we were BORN TO RUN!"

Ah, old school Springsteen.

Yeah, it never gets old.

Mr. Gunderson Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

It's a newer one but: 'Any idea where I was at your age? I was working downtown for the minimum wage' -- Antichrist Television Blues by Arcade Fire

Emily Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:40 AM EST

Streeeeet-lights, Peeeopu-u-u-ULLLL!!!!!!!!

fredric Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

I'm probably just a fan of back-up singers, but whenever I hear Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes," I always sing the back-up part, which is basically the words "your eyes" a million times.

b0bbyr0we Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

Jason Mraz records: bland, vanilla, boring. Jason Mraz, acoustic live: thrilling, thanks to soaring vocals that somehow lose their magic in such a solid state as a record, and on the fly improvs.

Mike in Moncton Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

"Oxygen" is a monster hit waiting to happen. Adams is sorely underrated.

Jen Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

Matchbox 20 acoustic anything is amazing, but especially "Long Day"

lk Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

john mayer can really play guitar but i just about die when he plays acoustically...
the lyrics that i must belt out are:
the chorus of "closer" by nine inch nails (lol)
"whoooooaaaa livin on a prayer" bon jovi (come february at penn state this song takes on a whole new meaning)

Amanda Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:56 AM EST

Pearl Jam, Alive:
"Is that the question? And if so, if so, who answers, who answeeerrrrsss yeah, I, I'm still alive."

Lena Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

The lyric I HAVE to belt out is from "Walking in Memphis:" "Tell me are you a Christian, child, and I said, Ma'am, I am tonight." Just writing it out like that makes me want to channel my inner-Syesha and belt it out like I'm in it to win it.

Steve from Yellowstone Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

Erm, Bryan actually did release an Unplugged cd in the 90s.

Lane Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

"I've seen a million faces...and I've ROCKED them all."

Charlie Daniels Fan Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

I told you once, you son of a b*tch, I'm the best that's ever been!

To Flapdragon Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:08 AM EST

It's "let the BIBLE BELT come down and save my soul". There is no bibleman.

Chree Tue, May 6, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Only one song during which I cannot for the life of me reign in my lyrical Turrets:
2. The Beatles- "Hey Jude" When Paul McCartney starts wailing "Jude jude ah judey judey judey ow WOW!" during the 'Na na na na' finale. Don't give me that stare, you know you all do it.

BijouxIce Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

"Little old lady got mutilated late last night" from Werewolves of London

Winona Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Lyric to sing out loud: the only one that pops in my head is "Maybe you squandered big bucks in your lifetime, now I have to pay" from Indigo Girls' "Galileo" - that one's always sung very loudly.

Artist that sounds better acoustic: Hanson. The awesome harmonies just shine through!

flapdragon Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Mine is pretty much the entire "Jack and Diane" song - especially the chorus about how the Bibleman is gonna save my so-oh-oul!!

Karen Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

Say it's true, it's true, we can break through! Gotta love U2.

aymzer Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

"You can do side bends or sit ups, but please don't lose that butt!"

Lynny Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

To stay with the Bryan Adams thing, "SOMEBODY LIKE YOU" on "Somebody"

stephanie Tue, May 6, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

oh wow there are TONS

-"I can hear your heart beat faster..!"
-"but she only comes when she's on top"
-"I want you to come on, come on, come on, come on and break it"
-"half a mil for bail 'cause I'm african"
-"josie's on a vacation far away"
-"ahhh wham! bam! thank you ma'am!"

and there's tons more but those are the ones I could think of. I have no idea how many saves the day fans are on (or not on) here but "I'm finally free from the ups and downs" is definitely one of those shout lyrics

Nix Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

Jason Mraz should not be allowed in a production studio.

alison Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

"bum bum bum" during Sweet Caroline. I even had to yell it out during little Archie's rendition last week even though it didn't quite fit.

Coach's Mistress Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:46 AM EST

I HATE this song, but everytime I hear Love Shack everybody always yells "TIN ROOF RUSTED!" and then everybody says how much they hate doing that.

RayT Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

Even though I have a deep-rooted aversion to '80s music, especially '80s rock, I always have to shout out, "Smell of wine and CHEAP perfuuuume!" from Journey's "Don't Stop Believing." I don't think I know any other lines from the song but hearing it always makes me think of how much I miss The Sopranos.

Jennifer Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:40 AM EST

I can play the gi-tar like a mutherf***in RIOT!!!

John Tue, May 6, 2008 at 08:27 AM EST

Um, well, obviously it is required by law to yell out "LEONARD BERNSTEIN" during a certain REM song...

mjade27 Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:47 AM EST

This probably doesn't count (since they always pretty much play acoustic), but I saw FOTC last night and they were great. Everyone seemed to need to shout out "Steve" from "Hiphopapotamus Vs Rhymenosorous".

Gator Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:45 AM EST

The one lyric I can't just whisper..."TAKE MY HAND AND WE'LL MAKE IT SWEAR!"

Gator Tue, May 6, 2008 at 07:45 AM EST

The one lyric I can't just whisper..."TAKE MY HAND AND WE'LL MAKE I SWEAR!"
