‘Bones’: Season finale and more with Hart Hanson

May 20, 2008, 12:51 PM | by Abby West

Categories: 'Bones', Mini TV Watch, Television

Bonesfinale_l So that's it, folks. We've come to the end of the road on season 3, and I have to say that I've got mixed feelings about last night's finale. From the fake funeral in the beginning to the heartbreaking revelation of Gormogon's apprentice at the end, much of the episode either rang false or felt a little too condensed for me. (We'll reveal the killer's name after the jump for those who actually haven't watched the show yet. Get on that already.) Suffice it to say, for now, that to make me believe that ending, to wrap my head around that logic, it would have needed another episode or two to play out.

But let's start with the fake out over Booth's alleged death. I don't think anyone really thought Booth was dead, despite Emily's Deschanel's superb acting, selling Brennan's desire to stay within the cold embrace of her work to avoid the sadness of her Booth's supposed demise. There was so much that could have been done with this if it were stretched out longer than three minutes. I concede that it may have taken the characters too far along their building-love path, but it seemed like a cheap trick to find out so quickly that after Booth was shot in the chest last week by stalker Pam that the FBI supposedly used that opportunity to fake his death and lure out another killer. And that the good doctor Sweets would use this as a chance to test Brennan's feelings for her partner by not telling her that he was alive. Back in the lab, Brennan was rightly livid that she wasn't told, and that anger led to last night's finest scene for some: a naked Booth in the bathroom.

Now I won't harp on the beer-can hat being a little incongruous (though, as one Bones-obsessed colleague of mine pointed out, there was a tray there that he could have used and a beer hat seemed too low-rent for him, even in the comfort of his bathroom) but from the Green Lantern comic book to the cigar to the vinyl record playing on an actual record player, that was a total guy-bath time. And let's not forget the rubber ducky that shows up later. The scene might have been too light-hearted for some but a more serious scene, one in which Brennan didn't actually gesture at his nether regions and ask if he wanted a towel, would also have brought them closer to the brink of consummating their sexual tension. And in our heart of hearts, we want them to put that off as long as possible.

Speaking of putting things off for as long as possible — so Zack is our killer, huh? Not sure I did a double take, but I was perplexed by the situation. I would love to be able to quote the first episode of the season, but wasn't there something about the apprentice being a widow's son? And didn't Zack have a rather large, intact family (mother, father, siblings) that came to visit him at the lab during that Christmas episode in season 1? It was frustrating not hearing the scary logic that persuaded Zack, who was not isolated or disenfranchised, to kill a man in the name of... what was it again?

I can't help but keep thinking of how the everyone-is-a-suspect thing could have been stretched out longer. Hodgins and then Sweets as suspects could have been really intriguing. They were really selling Hodgins as the apprentice and T. J. Thyne was really creeping me out for a bit. It was a bit of nice character development to have Sweets take a stand against Booth's threat to put him in handcuffs and arrest him. It took him from the sort of fawning man-crush he'd had on Booth, back to being an adult professional semi-authority figure. And even Cam was acting a bit suspicious, but that turned out to be  just a sort of jumpiness from knowing that someone at the Jeffersonian was the killer. Yet Tamara Taylor did an excellent job in the hospital-room scene when she found out that it was Zack. Her crestfallen face and dejection were enough to transfer you from questioning the logic to feeling the emotion. Putting aside the exchange between Brennan and Zack, which was just a bit confusing, watching Zack's friends gather around his favorite things (many of which they gave him), the shock and sadness were evident.

Still, among the many questions the episode left me with are these:

1) If Zack blew up his hands, who stole the skeleton?

2) If Gormogon did it, how did he get into the super-secure Jeffersonian? Wouldn't that make him slightly more than a nobody?

In my interview with exec producer Hart Hanson, Hanson said he was expecting a "violent reaction" from fans. But here he further explains why they chose to make Zack the apprentice: "We had gone pretty much as far as we could with that character. There’s an opportunity with that character to bring in a number of people. We’re not replacing him with a single character. We’re going have a bunch of people coming in and out and that gives us a bunch of opportunities in the lab for humor and stories."

Hopefully this isn't really a goodbye to Eric Millegan, who is actually a good friend of Hanson's. "We’re looking for ways to have him back as a guest star from time to time. We love the guy," says Hanson. "But you know, best laid plans. Eric’s a very talented guy and for all we know will be starring on Broadway and that will be that. I wish that for him but not too much."

It would be great to have Zack return next season, and as the squint squad takes turns visiting him maybe we could get a better idea of what reasoning Gormogon used to persuade him to commit murder.

Despite my many misgivings, I'm willing to give this episode a pass on the strength of the first two seasons and most of this one. The writers and cast do such a good job with the relationship-building and have come through so often that I can swallow the loss of Zack and hope that they'll pull off the next  season, maybe even satisfying some questions from this one.

So, how are you all feeling about this turn of events? How violent was your reaction? Are you just shaking your fists or shutting the door behind you? Let us know if you'll be back for the two-hour premiere of season 4 on August 27. Have a good summer, guys.

I'm half way through the finale and can't figure out WHAT THEY WERE THINKING with this horrible script - it was idiotic to change these characters after such a successful run. It makes no sense whatsoever. If they run one more like this next season they lose me as a watcher. Whoever thought of this should be gotten ride of immediately.

Nightheart Thu, Apr 9, 2009 at 04:29 PM EST

In Germany the episode was on air today, so this on is very fisrt imprssion:
I didn't like it very much. It was kind of extreme. Zach being a killer, after chasing after all these murderers? I think he should left the show after the Iraq, he could gone through some changes and return in season 5 or whatever. Now he will be never "Our" Zach again.

Sam Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 04:50 AM EST

Ok, so I am little disappointed at the end of season 3, for me it makes no sense at all. As I watched through the season I was sure Gormagon was going to kill either Zach (for discovering his secret mirror/camera set up)or Sweets (just because writers tend to kill off characters I like) and I was shocked that the writers decieded to make Zack the apprentice. This is for a few reasons, firstly Zach is not a widows son, & also if he blew up his own hands & not Hodgins why would he allow Gormagorn to attempt to blow up Bones and Booth? (earlier episode) Also, why did they make a big thing about the fact he killed that guy, but didn't eat him, it just smacks of double standards, "it's ok, Zach's a killer but not a cannibal" If this guy was able to convince Zack to kill why not munch on the guy too? But I admit I think Zach's character had gone as far as he could, but I'd rather G had killed him than turned him into his apprentice. Looking forwards to more Sweets in Season 4 though

Marie Glinn Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 02:18 PM EST

I was very upset when it dwas revealed that Zack was the apprentice. e have waited on him to come back from Iraq and was very glad to see him back it was like a part of the family being gone. U just couldn't even image sweet Zack he makes Brennan and Hodgins who they are on the show . Couldn't have been the new littlw man instead.
I enjpy the sow but not sure if I'll be as excited to watch it in the upcoming season . I didn't get into when ZACK ws gone. Let's bring him back.

woogiebehr Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 11:54 AM EST

The final episode"jumped the shark" for me. I will not be back. WHy don't writers/directors/ just leave well enough alone? This episode was SO contrived! DO you think anyone in charge ever says...."hey,wait a minutes....."?

mmo Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 12:51 PM EST

i liked all the episodes of bones. i hope to see zach as much of possible. i also hope that angela, hodgins, booth and brennen stays on the show as well as cam. i like them all and can't imagine them not being on bones. also i'd like to see brennen and booth have a relationship but stay partners no matter what happens. i hope there will be more seasons of bones. :)

Amanda Craft Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:57 AM EST

Oh my goodness....this episode literally had me in tears. When i found out that Zack was the "guy" my heart just stopped and it felt like it fell out of my chest. I really didn't know what to think. At first I thought that they were all kidding and stufff but when he cinfessed i just felt sick to my stomach. like after that i looked back at all the episodes before that and everytime a case came up with gormagon, i just wanted to cry because of Zack. I hated that feeling, and i went over the things that happened in my head and was thinking yes how did the skeloton get out, i mean i don't think that skelotons can just walk out...but anyway i just wanted to say that i hope that Zack shows on Bones again soon because you just cannot watch that show without him.

unabacus Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 08:19 AM EST

Am glad it's not just me who felt completely betrayed - well as much as a tv show can betray anyone anyway ;) I agree with a few others here that it was the strike that had more to do with the lameness of that episode than anything else... it had the feeling that the shows original writers had disappeared somewhere and they'd got newbies to do the job in their place.

It doesn't matter how you look at it, it just makes no sense for Zack to be the killer, none what-so-ever.. (Sweets would have been a far better choice). Not to mention the fact that they've now destroyed the family of characters they'd built up. I think they would have done better - like others have said - to leave it on Booth being shot and have spent some more time ready for the next season, but even that episode was rushed and slightly insane. To put it simply, me & my girlfriend really enjoyed watching Bones and always came away with a smile at the end, not so after the finale. Not sure if we'll bother with the 4th

eiaboca Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 01:13 AM EST

I will never watch this show again. This episode destroyed whatever plot, characterization, chemistry, or interest that they had ever built.

Bones was always a sweet little diversion for me...never really the greatest show on TV, the funniest, the most tightly plotted, the least repetitive, but cute, and nice to watch and relax. Sometimes even poignant.

And a single episode destroyed it all.

Roy Thomas Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 08:20 PM EST

Sorry. I didn't think to put in the address... frogprince at mts dot net. replace the 'at' with '@', and the 'dot' with '.', and we're flying.

Roy Thomas Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

HEARING IMPAIRED? Watching on Fox/Global? Tired of captioning screwing up, late, early, omitted, misspelled gibberish? I'm lobbying Global to do something about it. Send me an email with whatever you want me to put on Global's desk... and their advertiser's in-boxes... and we'll maybe get something done.

skyla thompson Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 01:00 AM EST

we are just coming to the end of this series in Australia & I have to say the writers are letting the show down. While I did not really warm to Zach's character, it reeks of a quick, almost can not be bothered, get it over with ending. If the writers do not pick up their game Bones will fall by the wayside for many viewers.

bones Fan Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

I dislike the ploy that producers use to generate fervor in there shows, by treating there stars as expendable. There is a cohesive aspect to a show that is almost always destroyed by this tactic and the show is hurt. Occasionally, if this happens once on a show it can have a positive effect, unfortunately, this tactic is over used (and these days it almost always is) and it pulls the show further and further down till the cohesive atmosphere created by the actors that made the show is lost or not believable. Loosing Zack is defiantly a step down, however, the question is can they find someone that can bring it back up? I hope so.

Meghan Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

Sorry, I meant to say this in my previous post: Perhaps the Gorgomon was so elated to find a personality (easily won over by logic, somewhat influenced by a stronger presence) inside the Jeffersonian where he could monitor the case progress for him, that he broke with the rules and chose someone who was not a widow's son? Perhaps protecting the work of his secret society seemed more important than protecting the rules and ideal of said society?

Meghan Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

I really think that Zach was the only logical choice for the Gorgomon killer; after his old apprentice was jailed and the skeleton taken, he know that everything he was working for was at the Jeffersonian, and that they were working to crack his secrets. He would have wanted someway of keeping track of their progress. Now, I love Zack, but when you look at all the members of the team, he seems to be the obvious pick - he is a loner who is constantly suprising his coworkers with unknown info (singing lessons, workout regimen), suggesting he naturally keeps to himself. Zack has always felt most at home at the Jeffersonian, in the world of science and fact. I really do think that all the killer needed to persuade him was a solid, logical argument as to why killing those men was right.

Mike Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:53 AM EST

Two things about the season finale.

The look of anger/hatred/disgust Sweets gave Hodgins behind his back as Hodgins criticized Sweets for appearing on Larry King and TMZ discussing the Gormagon case, getting his piece of it.

Cam saying that Sweets is Gormagon: "I was a cop for ten years, Dr. Brennan. I can smell it on him." ... "Trust me. Sweets is your boy."

Mike Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

Watched it again last night, and it didn't get any better. The first half is so over the top that it makes you think it has to be a dream—perhaps Booth's subconscious as he lies in a hospital bed fighting for his life. But I think now that they don't mean it to be a dream. Zack really is the Apprentice. And at this point the entire show falls apart. Sweets is definitely the better choice as the Gormagon killer, but to make Zack his Apprentice makes no sense at all. The previews for the premiere don't make me happy. Goofy slapstick in London. Woohoo.

Kristin Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:35 PM EST

I have to say that this had to be the worst possible episode for me to watch first. I just started watching the show, and this was the first one that I saw! I wish it hadn't been! Now every time I see Zach I look at him the way you look at the person that you know is the killer when you are watching an episode for the second+ time. How unfortunate. Even with that negative picture of Zack in the future I still have to admit that I am starting to like him, and the more often I feel fond of him the more upset I get about the finale.
In retrospect I am very very glad that it wasn't Hodgins. I love that guy!

lou Fri, Jul 25, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

oh the series was too short for my liking after being cut at xmas for the writers strike in us etc. got to be more to the story of gormagon zack must of been persuaded under pressure for a loved one or someone close at least.
can't wait for next season is it august 27th in england can anyone tell me for new series.
also i hope brennan and booth get alot closer cause we al know we want them to.

Steven Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

Well, personally I hope that there is more to the gormogon story to come. Mostly because there are logical gaps in the finale.
Aren't the apprentices all Widow's sons? If so, wouldn't that mean that maybe Zach was used by Gormogon to maybe throw off the pursuit?
Now that'd be a neat twist, they find out that Zach was recruited, yes, but that he wasn't really the apprentice. That would also open up the story line to have the Master they killed to have just been another shill, someone in the gormogon group that sacrificed himself to throw off pursuit.

I mean Sweet's comments about how there is only one master and one apprentice seems... a little too convenient. You know, get everyone thinking there's only one culprit, then give them one as a sacrifice, and they don't even think about looking for more suspects.

Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

I really hope that they twist the "zack is the killer" thing into a whole different investigation. They should make it so that zack had no choice, and killed because someone he loves was threatened or something. That would have been a good story.

Mike Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:26 AM EST

Anna,

Just check out one of the many "Bones" episodes guides on the Internet. They'll be listed in order of broadcast with a description of the episode's plot.

anna Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

okay this is confusing. i saw an episode were zack comes back from iraq and i thought that was after this episode. am i wrong? see i just started watching bones about a month ago and watched season 2 and i saw most season 1, but ive only seen some season 3s. and does anyone know how i can see santa slush one? i am so confused.

BonesNoMore Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 03:08 AM EST

I don't care whatever reason they have, I will not buy Season 3 DVDs after I've learned the shocking story of season finale (I've collected the first 2 seasons).

tanya Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

people seem to forget that there was a strike and the story lines had to be rushed. They had 4 episodes to wrap up season 3. Myself am a loyal bones fan, yes i was disapointed with the episode but i think the writers will have 20 episodes or more to develope better plots for season 4.

looking forward to the amazing chemistry between B&B

joseph Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 01:25 AM EST

Lol carrie, that is exactly how I felt when I watched Alien 3. Aliens (2) is my favorite movie of all time, they spent the entire movie fighting for their lives and saving Newt (the little girl) and all to have all of them, minus ripley, die in the beginning of 3. I hoped so much the next one would be just a bad cryogenic dream, but that hope was shattered with the release of resurrection. :/ Can only hope that Bones can do the right thing, bad dream, maybe due to Booth in a coma... like how they did on My Name is Earl. Ya there was a strike, but this is one of the very few shows that had a possibility to finish with a sensational bang carrying much anticipation to next season. Instead heads are bangin' on walls!

Tehkella Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

Just watched the finale last night (I'm a bit behind!) - not happy. The whole episode seemed contrived and rushed. I think it would have been better to end the season on the previous episode (which I actually thought was the finale until I realised there was another episode).

Beth- Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

You know what I wanted ?
A little more emotion from Brennan when they went on about Booths death. I mean I know thats not her personality but at least shed a tear - he's like more then a partner to her!

Courtney Mon, Jun 9, 2008 at 05:41 AM EST

After reading the above comments I am gratified in knowing I am not alone in my disappointment in the ending of this season. I believe it starts with the basketball episode. The conflict between Bones and Booth seems to have no end. Normally, although the bickering is consistent throughout the episode, there is a point where the problems are hashed out and rectified. There doesn't seem to be any of that during that or any of the following episodes. That leads me to Pam. Well hows that for an example of bad character development. She popped up from out of no where. I don't consider myself any sort of an expert on this topic, but I know what I like, and Pam definitely not it. Her development was stunted, and blew me out of the water when she showed up and attempted to shoot Brennan.

I must commend you though on Bones' reaction to the death of her partner. She acted a response I thought was commendable. And as for that "national security risk" at the funeral, what the hell!!!

carrie Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 07:39 PM EST

Like everyone else I love Bones, the tension, the reasoning, but where was the reasoning in the finale? It was totally rushed, not explaining anything well enough. I so hope the season opener reveales some kind of mistake or dream or dramatic cover up not being Zack or any one else on the team. The show shocked me but it does not settle well. There better be some good writing to either explain the finale or a really good show to make everyone forget it.

neverenoughjam Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

As another poster said, this show pulled its own rug out from under itself: after the revelation that a key member of the investigative team is a killer who has been monkeying about with evidence, there is NO WAY any law enforcement agency would ever trust the Jeffersonian again. The repercussions would have been Titanic: every case Zack worked on would have had to be re-tried. Everything he ever touched in the lab would have to be re-examined. The integrity of every report, every bit of witness testimony, every piece of evidence examined in that lab would have been called into question. The Jeffersonian would never again be asked even to do forensic research on ancient skeletons. In such a field, the reputation of the lab and its workers is EVERYTHING. Hart Hanson and his writers are either too ignorant or too arrogant to take into account the consequences of their actions. Obviously, they think we'll swallow anything. I think they have a surprise coming.

helobot Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

i can't believe they did that. I only just got to watch it now. It felt like a the writers just wanted a shock ending. To me it feels a little like show suicide. They have not only got rid of a key character but have destroyed many of the team interactions. Most of cam's and hodges screen time was taken up with zach interactions. I hope they can pull it out of the bag but i am worried. Im sure alot of it is down to the writers strike but i dont see how the show can recover its awesome dynamic it had. The show had a formula that worked. Ill keep my fingers crossed

James Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

Mr. Hanson can try and get by on the 'we had to do something dramatic' line but it doesn't wash. This was terrible writing and a cheap creative decision to go for shock over genuine character motivation and justification. There was absolutely no foreshadowing of the highly likeable character of Zach doing this - as Hitchcock would bemoan; surprise rather than suspense. What was the message supposed to be here? The week before Zach was singing away quite merrily; and meantime stabbed someone quite coldly in the heart and was going around faking evidence and collecting bones for his master? Also massive plot holes. Come on guys, please. This is screenwriting 101 material that should have been handed back with a 'try harder next time' grade. If you can't do better than this, get a job in a Supermarket and let someone who can really write have a go. Mr. Hanson you definitely got a reaction from the fans. I belive I along with many others won't be watching this show any more. Well done!

dcv Sun, Jun 1, 2008 at 07:20 AM EST

Seriously it's a t.v. show! I watch it off and on and it already looks like the cast has changed significantly since season one. Zach wasn't that well developed of a character, always seemed one-sided, or maybe just too awkward for my liking, oh and who the hell cares if viewers in the UK watch, not me

Tyanna Sat, May 31, 2008 at 10:24 PM EST

Zack as the killer? What a joke. There are plot holes you can drive a Mac truck through.
First, as stated in the article above, Gormogon picks fatherless boys to be his apprentice. Zack comes from a large family, and has a father. You can see him in the Christmas episode in season one.
Zack said that he was approached by the man 3 months before that point, just before the last guy was killed. If he was the guy's apprentice, why would he point out the mirrors and the camera?
Last, Zack said he killed the last guy. Thus he was the one in the closet at the end of S3E8, who attacked him. But wait. Just before that when they are showing what everyone is doing at the end of the episode, Zack was shown looking at bones from the previous Gormogon skeleton.
It makes no sense to me. I mean…I liked Zack! There was so much more they could have done with his character. His singing? His family life? Him finding a girlfriend? Something people! *shakes head*

Sarah Fri, May 30, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

I have to agree and say that the finale did a pathetic job of tying up loose ends. As trite as an imaginary dream sequence finale would be for a show that has produced such tight scripts in the past, it would still better explain that episode than the reality based continuity disaster we're supposed to take it for. Have the writers even been introduced to these characters before? I do think it insults the audiences intelligence to simply ignore previously introduced facts regarding Gormogon and his apprentice that would automatically eliminate Zach as a suspect. I am not a "crime drama" person usually and can't stand the whole CSI franchise, etc. What set Bones apart was great acting, great writing, and fantastic character development and interpersonal relationships. The writing in the last couple of episodes of S3 was forced, unbelievable and plot driven. I hope they fire whatever writers are responsible for the laundry list of bad moments and glib dialogue before next season starts.

Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

Also: How the ... could he have stolen the skeleton after the explosion?? Hands hurt, him lying there and all???

Fri, May 30, 2008 at 09:52 AM EST

I read so much about this "shocking, sad season finale". But, having seen it now, I found it neither shocking nor sad. In fact, it just didn't touch or convince me. Zack killed somebody - why? Not convincing. Why is everybody sad seeing his things? He's not dead, he just turned out to be a bloody killer. Why should you be caring if he kept your things? They could be shocked, yes, but they appear all like he just died. Sad? Not at all. A big disappointment.

Beth Fri, May 30, 2008 at 05:20 AM EST

I was shocked when I first found out - when me, my mum and dad found out one of them was the apprentice ... I immediantly assumed it was Cam for some reason.
I enjoyed it although I wish they did strech it out abit. I loved Cams reaction when they were looking through Zacks things - and I loved how Sweets understood how she was acutally feeling. I wish they had streched out the bit where they found Gormogon although I can deffinatly say that the scene kept playing in my head when I went to bed. I couldn't get that awful face out of my head. I wanted a better ending - like a cliffhanger instead of Brennan just leaning on Booth ... a big cliffhanger that would continue for the next series. I nearly had tears in my eyes when Brennan leaned on Zack and Zack had tears rolling down his cheek when her and Booth went to him in the hospital after they figured out he was the apprentice. But overall I loved it, I will end up watching it again later and I just can't get enough of Bones.

Bella Thu, May 29, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

I believe there was an episode where Zack was sent away to the military and ppl seemed to be happy when he came back.

Why was his big, big, big family not there when he was hurt?

Also in the Christmas episode, he seemed to respect his mom's feelings by saying he was religious if his mom asked.

To answer simply if they don't fix this I already know I will lose interest. I won't be back or buy the dvd's.

luke Thu, May 29, 2008 at 06:07 PM EST

me and mu familly all get to gether to watch bones once a week its the only thing we get together 4 to watch any more and we are so anoys they got rid of zach they have to bring him back as a main character if they dont my hole familly have said they will stop watching coz we dont want any more new charcters we all loved the characters given in season one like most of the uk nearly every one i know who whatches bones said they wont whatch bones in season 4 if zach isnt brought back as a main character they all love the main team booth, bones, hogens, zach, angela we dont like sweets or the new head of the jefasonian most people i know will stop whatching if zach isnt brought back (and ur show will be cnceld so think about it bring back zach = keep a job yey ) or ( leav zach out loose veiwers = no job :( ) ur desicion writers.

stacey Thu, May 29, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

oh my god! i can't believe thats the season finale. you can't take zack out of the show, the stupid experiments that he and hodgins do are some of my favourite parts of the show. not to mention that taking out one of te main characters will be a huge impact on the group. the show wont be the same without zack. and who will hodgins compete with for king of the lab? this is the best show on tv, and it seemed like this whole episode was rushed!!! please pleas please fix this and bring zack back, some how some way!!!

Alicia Wed, May 28, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

I am offended! Zach is a beautiful character! Fun, adorable, and very close to my heart! My friends and I feel the same; we even hoped that, perhaps, Booth was in a coma (who's up and about after being shot in the chest?) and dreaming! And that he'd wake up and Zach would be his normal, non-Gormogon-apprentice self! Really, I still hope for that! Bones just won't be the same without the character who refused to kill a bunch of beetles just because "they have names"! If he wouldn't kill a beetle, why would he kill a human? He isn't a widow's son or whatever, and things just don't make sense! Getting rid of favorite characters and bringing in replacements is what ruins most of the best shows out there! What are the writers of Bones thinking?! Please fix my favorite show! Please save my favorite character!

Laura Higginbotham Wed, May 28, 2008 at 01:04 PM EST

It's just TV, but admittedly, it actually made me feel sick and sad at the ending. And the sense of it was just wrong. What in the world did they mean they had gone as far as they could with Zack's character. They all have their own personalities and are integral to the story. What's any different in saying they've gone as far as they can with Dr. Brennan, or Hodgins? They are who they are. I had DVRd several episodes and accidentally watched the last episode before seeing the one in which Booth was shot. So this morning I watched it...felt sick again watching Zack. Fix it people.

Rachael Tue, May 27, 2008 at 10:03 PM EST

I have watched Bones since the very first episode and thought it was completely brilliant... the only really smart show on FOX with amazing characters and writing. A total gem! This season finale was a slap in the face. It was insulting to the history of the show, the fans, the integrity of the characters... It could not have been worse if they had killed Seely. Beyond Zack being turned into a sociopathic killer, it was still AWFUL! I will only watch the show again if this was all a weird anasthesia induced dream in Booth's head. That's the only way it would be even somewhat believable. And if that doesn't happen, I will never watch again - not new episodes, not syndication and I will never buy the season 3 DVDs or DVDs of future seasons. Hart, you lost me! I'm out!

Tamar Schnepp Tue, May 27, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

As a mother of a child with Asperger Syndrome I am appalled by the way you handled the Zack character. He was a warm and fun character with a lot to share. He was everything that parents of children with Asperger's hope our children will become and will have in their lives. He was accepted, he found a great place to work and apply his quirky mind, and he figured out how to care about the people around him (plus he was funny). There is no way that someone like that then turns around and becomes a killer. You are only showing a terribly ignorance when you produce a plot like this telling my son and all parents of children with this quirky developmental disability - "give up, no matter what you will always be a degenerate and an outcast." You are so wrong.

As a TV viewer I will miss the Zack character if I decide to ever watch again. As a parent I think you could have found a better way to get rid of him, if that's what you wanted to do, that wasn't so insulting.

Chris Mon, May 26, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

So tonight is the first night of Bones rerun episodes and I can't bring myself to watch it after that horrible season finale. Writers, fix Bones!

Ann Evans Mon, May 26, 2008 at 08:00 AM EST

Has anyone thought that this may be a fake? Maybe it's all in Booth's head. I think a lot of programmes had to end suddenly because of the strike. I know Prison Break had to and that finished in a silly way. Bones was meant to have 28 episodes in season three but only had half that number. Please give it a chance in season four.

edensasp Mon, May 26, 2008 at 06:53 AM EST

bring back Zack period. Make it look like he took the fall to bring out the real apprentice who is some hall monitor or security guard. Eric Millegan was axed by FOX solely because of his sexuality. Openly gay.

Samskid Sun, May 25, 2008 at 10:51 PM EST

Why don't you just kill Zack off and let us forget all about that sorry mess of a finale. Maybe just act like it never happened (that would be just as believable as the stupid storyline we're expected to believe. I won't be able to ever watch another episode with Zack in it so just let him go. I loved this show but it's all just ruined now.

Techmom Sun, May 25, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

I may not watch any more Bones. If the writers can betray my trust so badly with Zach, how can I trust them not to do the same to one of the other regulars. I am extremely disappointed. If the writers needed to add more characters, ever-changing, they could have added another function to the team. So many shows start out good for the first few seasons, then the original writers seem to move on the replacements ruin the shows.

Mo Fri, May 23, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

Bones had been on my "gotta get around to watching that show some day" list, but I didn't actually start watching until sometime around the strike, when I finally got my DVR (oh happy day), so the only episodes of Bones I have ever seen have been those for the last few weeks, and I would have hated it much more if Hodgins had turned out to be the apprentice. I hope Zack will keep coming back. Maybe they can go visit him in the mental institution and get some help from him on cases from time to time. Or maybe, like Jeff says, someone else threatened his friends and family to make him help with the explosion, and that someone stole the skeleton. But having a changing roster of different characters come in and try to replace Zack could also provide a lot of humor and quirky interactions, which is what made me fall in love with this show instantly. So I will come back for sure!

AnitaMargarita Fri, May 23, 2008 at 09:09 AM EST

I HATE that Zach is the killer, but I will definitely buy the Season 3 DVDs and be back to watch next season. I don't buy it, even with the set up at Daddy's trial. They had better deal with it more in S4.

steve Fri, May 23, 2008 at 07:09 AM EST

Gentlemen, what on earth are you doing?
Bones is fast turning into(if not already) cult viewing in the UK, primarily because of characters like Zack. Viewers enjoy the consistancy of him, and even newcomers like Dr Sweets, what will happen to 'king of the lab' without Zack.
You may not be aware but when the Sully character appeared a lot of UK viewers stopped watching, Sully sails off, people switched back on! If Zack goes you can be sure a lot of viewers here will again stop watching! Your choice writers.

Jeff Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:21 PM EST

Hey ET, why don't you put Zack's reveal as the appretice on your Bullseye, but instead of having the misfired arrow at the bottom of the next page, stick it on the last page with Stephen King...because that's just about how huge a misfire this was.

Seriously people. The show is ruined now. Everytime i try to watch a rerun I see Zack and think he's a killer, but wait that's illogical! I can't get past this idiotic plot hole. It makes zero sense. I can't watch bones anymore. They've ruined my favorite show over a need for shock value.

Sweets was the apprentice. We all know it. Can't they just reveal he threatened to kill Brennan and his huge family unless he confessed to throw suspicion off him? Bones does wacky junk like this all the time. If Brennan's killer dad can go free, then they can find a way to save Zack. Until then, I'm off this show...

Karen Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:19 PM EST

I actually predicted it would be Zack a long time ago - pre-strike (or was it immediately after?) when word was that it was someone we knew that worked at the Jeffersonian. They never go with the obvious choice... as soon as I saw Zack would be injured, that sealed it for me so it wasn't a surprise. Not saying I like it... I, too, had trouble with the "explanation". It was just so.... out of left field despite the fact I saw it coming a mile away. I love Zack and, frankly... I gotta say, I'm a little pissed. :(

Jill Thu, May 22, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

Dan,
Not to mention there’s kadzoo of growth opps for Zach:
-dealing with PTSD
-is recruited by another agency/museum
-gets a girlfriend – a real one
-family issues (his is big, so there’s a lot of potential) I always thought it would be so interesting to tackle if something came up where Zach had to choose between his real family and his Jeffersonian “family” on an issue
I came up with those in 30 seconds, if I was paid to do this who knows…

Four days later and I’m still amazed at what a ridiculous move this was – it hurts my brain.

Dan Thu, May 22, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

Just for the record, I don't believe that characters should be cut for lack of "growth" opportunities. Homer Simpson has been the same for almost 20 years, and that doesn't seem to have hurt anything...

Melissa Thu, May 22, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Somewhere in LA, there is a continuity editor who should truly consider making a career change. I could forgive the strike-induced, contrived writing, if only there weren't such glaring inconsistencies in the character arcs and plot.

During S1, the team was reviewed for security purposes. Zack was asked if he would be a risk if someone made an irrefutable, logical argument based on facts. Zack replied: "Not without asking Hodgins or Angela first." Should we believe that a conspiracy theorist, serial killer (who nearly blew up Brennan and Booth) would try to recruit Zack and he wouldn't tell Hodgins?

Plus, how many of us are going re-watch "The Knight on the Grid" and see that the dude who attacks the lobbyist doesn't look like Zack at all? AND, “Widow’s Son”?!!? What about Zack’s mom and dad during S1’s Christmas episode?

Hart and his team have some serious redemption time ahead of them in order for this show to remain “appointment tv” for me.

Cathee Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:39 AM EST

I did not like Zack being the "apprentice" as it made absolutely no sense to me.

The "Booth death" was too typical and easy to guess that he was not really dead. This type of thing has been done too many times in different shows.
Don't ruin the show "Bones" next season.

ali Thu, May 22, 2008 at 09:02 AM EST

I was happy that Booth was still alive;saddened but intrigued that Zack was the apprentice. I loved Cam's reaction, and the tenderness between Bones and Zack; along with the fact that he blew himself up to protect one friend- why wouldn't he kill someone,to protect all his friends. That would be a good story potential for a season, & would allow Zack to stay, and eventually gain his credibility back. Their's a lot of potential with that storyline, and with character. In fact I love all the characters, including sweets, he adds a nice element to the show I think. More could be done with all the character's, including Zack.

Joseph Thu, May 22, 2008 at 04:44 AM EST

I began watching the season finale knowing if they killed Booth I wouldn't watch the show anymore, so there wasn't any shock value whatsoever. I wasn't expecting the result either, but I can have faith and see how they try to salvage the mess made. I like Zack's character. It doesn't make sense why it was said that nothing more could be done with the character. No more nutty experiments, no more king of the lab battles... ? Zack gave balance for the Hodgin's / Angela development and really brought out what seemed to be the best from his pal Hodgins. Also, if you watch how Zack and Camile interacted this season, I was expecting a suprise romance between them, and thought it would have made for some very interesting ideas to delve into that relationship however big or small. Oh well, lost opportunity if you ask me.
And the whole 'Gargamel' idea? I thought that is why they brought Sweet's character on from the get go. I thought he was the apprentice, it made sense, not Zack.

Mark Thu, May 22, 2008 at 01:37 AM EST

Yo, Elsari. "This also smacks of a lack of imagination and creativity - did anyone see CSI and CSI Miami's finales?" YEAH. THAT'S BECAUSE BONES NOW HAS THAT HACK JOSH BERMAN (CSI & VANISHED) STINKING UP THEIR WRITING. Talk about lack creativity. I couldn't watch his episode last week with the singers. It was equally as stupid as his horse episode.

Thu, May 22, 2008 at 12:27 AM EST

I DON'T WANT ANYMORE RERUNS .THE STRIKE SUCKED.I READ THEY ARE GETTING NEW WRITERS .BUT WHAT HAPPEN THE WRITERS WERE FINE FOR SERIES 1 AND 2.I WOULD LIKE TO SEE BOOTH SPEND MORE TIME WITH THIS SON BUY A HOUSE .MATBE BONES CAN COME OVER TO HIS HOUSE FOR DINNER AND A MOVIE?

idigress Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:47 PM EST

I guessed Zack as soon as they said someone in the lab was a suspect. Zack is incredibly smart but crazy naive and seems ripe for the picking. Looking forward to August 27th.

Dianne Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

Writers, producers, whoever makes these idiotic mistakes simply fail to get the appeal of ensemble acting. I loved the Zach character and find this ending to be way out of character. It's forced and foolish. Load of crap.

jes Wed, May 21, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

Hopefully this was all a dream or Iraqi induced hallucination. I wish that episode had never happened. Not because we lost Zack, but because the writing and explanations for character behavior was so horrendous that I am embarrassed to be a fan. I feel like they have no respect for the audience's intelligence. Give me Season One please where the cases were tight, characters stayed in character, and Zach was sweet, funny, fiercely intelligent and loyal to his friends and family. No way that character stabs a person in the heart.

Egads Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

If they wanted to make it really interesting, Gormagon Jr. whould have been....

Angela. NOBODY would have seen that coming. Picking a introverted uber-geek with socialization problems? Too obvious...

BJohnson Wed, May 21, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

I don't believe they jumped the shark yet. I guess I'm one of the few who could believe Zach as the killer, not serial he only killed the lobbyist. I wondered when the issue of Zach's discharge from Iraq would come around. He was a baby going there just because he thought logically that would make him a man like Booth. Very easily swayed. I'll miss him but that means room for a new characters or characters. Yep, I'm invested next season.

Chris Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:46 PM EST

If they wanted to shock me, they failed. Disgust and disappointed they managed. IF...IF this storyline stands as is I will not continue to watch and seasons 1-3 will have been ruined. Geez if they were bored with the show they picked a good way to get cancelled. Hopefully in the 1st episode of season 4 they can prove they didn't take a detour to Stupidville.

Leecie Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

That was a probably the most shocking Bones episode out of the three seasons. When I first saw the funeral, I was startled, but I knew that it had to be a fake. I thought that in the end Brennan would wake up and find it was all a dream. This episode was very exciting. I couldn't believe that Zach was the killer. I went back and looked at the past episode Knight On The Grid and I saw the killers face at the very end of the episode. It did not look like Zach at all. Also, was Zach the one that tried to blow up Brennan and Booth in the cab? Was Zach the one that pulled the little boy into the pool to get away from Booth? Although this final episode was my favorite, I was left with many questions. I look foward to watching Bones Season 4! I hope Booth and Brennan finally go out on date!!

Ellipsian Wed, May 21, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

Wow, Mr. Hanson (and those involved in Zach's downfall): that was rough. And utterly unbelievable. I might be understanding about the strike nixing a number of eps needed to solidify and make sense of your disappointing twist, but man, to say that the whole Gormogon arc was poorly handled is a severe understatement. You, sir, are no Joss Whedon (or J.J. Abrams. Or Rob Thomas. Need I continue?) I've been a loyal viewer since the beginning, but I'm not sure that I can be wooed back when you're willing to discard your characters--OUR characters--so wastefully and with such flippance. You've got some serious 'splaining to do.

Mike Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

Blaming this disaster on the writers' strike is ridiculous.

I don't feel the same way about "Bones" today as I did on Sunday. I'll still watch, but I won't anticipate each week's episode. For me, I looked forward to "Lost" and "Bones." Now, "Bones" is like "Chuck," "Shark," or "Without A Trace." I'll watch them if they're on, but it doesn't bother me if I miss them.

AKH Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

I caught a season re-run last night on TNT and I really couldn't watch Zack the same way. So, unfortunately, that is ruined for me.
It's too bad the finale didn't get 2 hours, with more time it might not have been so forced, and we might have gotten more insight into what the heck Zack was thinking. But, I like the show too much not to watch anymore, and unfortunately, Zack was my least favorite of the bunch. I do think he got rather shoddy treatment, though.

thorswitch Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

The fake funeral didn't bother me because I knew it was fake. You can't really do "Bones" without Booth, and we'd already heard about Booth and Bones filming in England for next season, so it was *obvious* the funeral was fake.

As for Zach, that's a hard one to swallow. I really hope that they are able to find some time and film some scenes of his co-workers going to visit him, and have him explain better how he got roped into becoming the apprentice and tie up the loose ends. I mean, they could shoot a whole bunch of those scenes in a couple of days, and then sprinkle them throughout the season, making it easier to make sure Eric Milligan can be available to do them. I think it would be interesting for them to tie it into his experience in Iraq.

I'm not gonna quit watching, though - I'm not happy with they way they wrote Zach out, but the show it too much fun to just give up on.

Hugh Wed, May 21, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

If the episode felt rushed, it was most likely a resultant echo from the Writer's Strike. The Gormogon Apprentice being Zack was a bit of a surprise, but not totally unexpected, as his character has had various questions about is identity. Being both smart and logical don't make you either a better or more complete person. Zack cut his hair to appear more mature, which has him questioning his maturity level in the eyes of others. He always "betas" to Booth's, Brennan's and even Hodgin's "alpha" presence. I don't think Zack was ever completely the same after returning from the war. I believe one comment questioned Zack's ability to murder, but what number of sub-human atrocities was Zack subjected to in the war? As ridiculous as it might seem, his understand and acceptance of the Gormogon beliefs really aren't that different to other faith systems. And I feel that becoming the Gormogon Apprentice was Zack's way of finally growing up and becoming a "man." Nonetheless, he will be missed.

LisaMama Wed, May 21, 2008 at 09:43 AM EST

Here's my alternate universe version: Zack is approached by the bad guy, and Zack works with the guy because he is secretly trying to take the guy down on his own, instead of going to Booth and Bones for help. Zack thinks he can outsmart and stop Gormogon. Maybe they can write this idea into the premiere? Please? Because there is NO WAY that Zack becomes a crazy serial killer. NO WAY.

I have watched every episode of this show and been loyal from the beginning, but my faith is shaken.

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 09:41 AM EST

One not so great episode is not enough to keep me from watching a show I love. The writer's strike forced many shows to have to cram plots that should have been 2-3 episodes long into one episode. Of course this would have played out better if they had more time. Sad that Zach is gone now, but that happens in all shows characters sometimes choose to leave or they are gone to move other plot lines along. I am interested to see what happens next season

Robert Wed, May 21, 2008 at 09:32 AM EST

While I agree with previous comments on the failings of this episode, the only think that really matters to me is that zack addy is wriiten out. That was a fun character. And not a dead end as everyone is suggesting, there was obvious room for growth, perhaps more that the other characters. we'll miss him

elsari Wed, May 21, 2008 at 07:40 AM EST

Adding my voice to the chorus... This was an unbelievably lame season finale. From the predictable fake Booth funeral to the absurd revelation of Zach as Gormogon's apprentice, this episode failed. The fake funeral was a joke, although I do give the actors credit - they did their best. And didn't Booth get shot in the chest? How did he recover so quickly? Wouldn't Brennan have gone to the hospital with him, and therefore discovered he was not dead? Zack as Gormogon's apprentice is ridiculous. Someone with his intelligence would have been able to see through the lame premises posited as his reasons for killing. Anyone taking a first year logic class would have seen through them. This also smacks of a lack of imagination and creativity - did anyone see CSI and CSI Miami's finales? Horatio was betrayed by a member of his team, and Warrick was shot by the under-sheriff. Clearly, betrayal by a team member is a crutch used by writers trying to out shock other shows. LAME!

annie Wed, May 21, 2008 at 06:16 AM EST

This ep definitely dented my faith in Bones, but didn't destroy it. I'm developing my own temporary canon where someone else in the lab (not a star) was the apprentice, Zack got kidnapped and killed for his brains, and Booth spent the entire episode in "critical condition" at the hospital.

Finales are MUCH more suited to tragedy and tension, and premiers MUCH more suited to comedy and recovery. Booth's "funeral" (and all that followed it) would've gone over much better (for me) if it was at the beginning of season 4.

As much as I love Zack, and think Hodgins needs him to interact with, I think new blood will be good for the lab.

Despite my disappointment, I'll be back for more.

Roy Thomas Wed, May 21, 2008 at 06:11 AM EST

It felt like the script was really rushed... like every idea the writers had got thrown onto paper in almost frenzied desperation, and, when they found it was too long, they clipped pages and lines without considering the effect downstream. In fact, it was almost like a bad writing assignment from the "Soap Opera" school of writing, certainly not what we have come to expect. Fortunately, the actors soldiered on and made the best of a shaky script. Frankly, the whole Gormagon story line was overly fantastic for me from the introduction. Losing Zach is a sadness, but his character had almost become caricature, limited and predictable. I hope that next season, assuming there is one, the writers will have more lead time to develop stores... real stories, not pastiches cobbled up and banged into place without consideration. It is a mistake to assume that, because you're on top, you don't have to try anymore. Anybody remember Microsoft?

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 05:46 AM EST

I agree with everyone who hated this episode. And their reasons. I love this show so much but if anything would make me think about never watching it again this episode really really does. I don't know if Bones can come back from this unless they pretend this episode never happened...oh and Booth completely healed from being shot in two weeks...LAME everything about this episode SUCKED

cabri Wed, May 21, 2008 at 04:00 AM EST

I know Hanson likes to finish off the seasons with big finales that resolve the main mystery arc, but they could have used the strike as an excuse to pass on it this once. They didn't have enough time this season to tell Zack's story, they didn't have enough time to tell the Gormagon's story, and they were so wrong to just mash up the two.

They should've solved the Gravedigger mystery (finally!) or even just had a run-of-the-mill mystery and concentrate on the characters. We watch this show for the characters, the mysteries are fun but too often leave plot threads are just left dangling. That being said, I WILL be watching in August.

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 03:41 AM EST

Yet another effect of the writer's strike; cramming. We can only trim so much fat off the meat (an appropriate analogy if I do say so) before the story gets lost and forgotten over the summer. Zach being the disciple was incredibly lame; he surpasses Brennan's ability to compartmentalize into psychopathy, which, by the way, would have been a much more believable and fun way of explaining Zach becoming G's disciple. I believe him cracking much more.

Sherrilina Wed, May 21, 2008 at 03:34 AM EST

"This show didn't jump the shark, it went to an aquarium, stole five sharks, and then just ran over them with a van."

Lol, I couldn't have put it better myself! ;)

And Alamo75, another MAJOR part of Zack's character is his loyalty to Brennan and need for approval from her, Booth and the rest of the gang--it makes no sense--no LOGIC--that he would suddenly decide, having already begun working on the case with them before being contacted by Gormagon, to betray them, and no longer seek their approval--that he wouldn't have immediately said--"Booth! Gormagon talked to me!" Bones was able to pick apart the logic in an instant, Zack should have seen it too....

frank Wed, May 21, 2008 at 01:18 AM EST

The "widows son" piece was by the profiler, duh Sweets. It could still be sweets. Plus a really talented psychologist could have "programmed" or hypnotized Zach. Unless it takes a funky turn like I suggest, then yes it was lame.

Rose Wed, May 21, 2008 at 12:52 AM EST

What a disappointing episode, usually I come away wanting more but this one I thought-no go back make it a dream, a chapter in one of Bones books... because it was so bad.How are you going to get out of this one-much to ugly. Booth gets shot and then it is a fake funeral and he's fine....wait a minute I think you left to much out here. Zac as the Apprentice-you were not able to make me even remotely believe this.It was like you wanted to put too much into 44 minutes and were unable to make it fit together. Just no continuitty in this episode- you went off in too many directions. It is not like everything has to be neatly wrapped up in 44 minutes but this was to much of a stretch. Really disappointing.

Mary Tue, May 20, 2008 at 11:58 PM EST

I've watched the episode (which I DVR'd) 6 times and am finally getting into the plotline for this episode.

Mr Hanson, this was a terrific episode, BUT ONLY IF IT HAD BEEN PRECEDED BY TWO OR THREE EPISODES THAT BUILT TO IT.

I get that it was Zach - but the script was too rushed, and the change in Zach's character this past season too vague and too subtle to make Zach's downward drift clear to most of the viewing audience.

Also: LOTS of viewers loved Zach, and many viewers won't be back because of that. For example, I stopped watching CSI when Sarah Sidle left, because I loved her character and the Sidle/Grissom relationship.

As for Bones - I'll be back because I love Bones and I love Booth and I love romantic comedy (with a hint of gore), and I love banter.

But this was a mistake. Fox is going to have to do a LOT of advertising to earn NEW viewers to replace the one they've lost.

Finally: Fridays are a no-go, no-show time. Best of luck, dude: you will need it this fall.

Michelle Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

I have to agree with many of the people who have posted- it's not the fact that Zack was the apprentice that was the problem, it's the way it was handled. Yes i realize that the stike posed storyline problems, but why not wait untill next season to have zack leave? they could have at least given the character a full episode, not a lousy 10 minutes at the end of the season finale. What happened last night feels like a disserive to both the fans and eric millegan. As a casual Bones viewer who was just starting to really get into the show, the finale was enough to make me stop watching permanently.

Owen Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:36 PM EST

The unfortunate thing for me is that this was lazy story telling. Somewhere along the line Eric Millegan was deemed dispensible and someone pulled this out of their you know what. I have watched every episode of this show and there is no way I am buying (even with my belief suspended) that this character would become a killer in a case his very best friends were investigating. That would put him into conflict with the team and I don't think this character would have ever done that. I could maybe buy "Zack" killing in a crime of passion, but serial killer in training? Nope.

Jeff Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:18 PM EST

What were they thinking? I mean "Zach" as a force of evil...please. The whole concept was ridiculous. A bumbling concept the showed no sense of the character at all. This is the most disappointed I have been in a V Show in years. Sweets is just a short term pain in the rear who could have been ditched easily, instead they took down a character who was "the King of the Lab". How very sad.

Melissa Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

"Zack is an integral part of the show, just as much as Hodgins or Angela or Cam or Brennan or Booth! They together make the show work, and any loss by a member will result in a major loss of the show's quality and character as well."
You put my thoughts into words better than I could have! While I do think that Zack as Gormogon's apprentice is plausible (though something of a stretch), I hate that they wrote him off that way. I think Bone's greatest strength is it's family of characters, and now we've lost one of the family. I never liked the whole Gormogon storyline in the first place, and was really disappointed that the Gravedigger storyline seemed completely dropped. So I guess we'll see what season 4 will bring - I'm sort of just expecting someone to pop out and say "Just Kidding!"

eboro Tue, May 20, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

If they replace Zack with some stud, kiss ass like that blonde dude who was searching the bones....I'm out. There are already to many beautiful people in the "Squint Squad" I know it's TV but still.

JR Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:47 PM EST

And how will Brennan handle that? Will she be stuck in the lab again for the exact same reason she did in the Premiere? Because there is no I'd be bying her willingly being away from the lab with good faith in the new F.A. when it took her almost 3 Seasons to have that much faith in someone else. That would not only dimish Zack's importance to Brennan even more but be another stab at the obvious unimportance the producers/writers think Zack had in this show.

JR Tue, May 20, 2008 at 09:46 PM EST

Another thing that doesn't really make sense to me is the fact that the team doesn't need a psychologist/profiler. B&B have done well for over 2 Seasons without one and still get their cases solved. Now they are forcing Sweets and his profiles into the mix. Booth is pretty capable of doing the interrogation stuff by himself.

But they need a second Forensic Anthropologist. I thought the whole point in the first episode of the Season was to show that not only did Brennan miss Zack but that she didn't want to leave the lab because there is no one there she thinks is cabable of fullfilling the part she usually has. The only reason why she even goes out with Booth so much, specially this Season, is because she thinks the lab is in good hands with Zack as the F.A. instead of her. She has that much faith in his talents and knowledge. So what's going happen next Season? Force a new F.A. into the team we don't care about? And how will Brennan handle that? Will she be stuck in the lab again for

The result is that after a breach in security like that they can't feasibly present the Jeffersonian as an aid to the FBI in solving crimes. It screwed the integrity of the institute. That in turn screws up the premise of the show in general. Thats notwithstanding that you have to pretend you didn't see the rest of season three to rationalize the 'zack is the killer' plotline. He was busy in the lab when the second apprentice set off the tooth bomb and put the kid in the pool.
Plus, he accepted her assumption that secret societies have a negative effect on people as a whole. I'm really bummed that one of the only shows I liked this season has just fallen apart. Its like the second season of heroes all over again.

pretty much ive read this whole board, most seem to think this ep sucked/are really disappointed, i sorta see where your coming from a regarding conclusions and revelations in the story being abrupt. but i just feel it has left something to be desired for next season, which is exciting, there are so many possibilities now. zack or at least his story wil return. cant wait for more booth brennan interaction especially with sweets (his cheeky face is enough to make me love him). i want to know more...gonna miss it.

yes it would have been way better if the ep was 2hrs long...& the booths death-reaction was drawn out & some backstory/logic behind zack being the apprentice was plahyed out but i think it was highly entertaining & i can see how each character's actions/emotions are feasible...all u need is some imagination.
lastly have to say i luved brennans 'your lack of modesty is refreshing' comment to booth naked!!!it seemed normal 4 them:). ill be watching season 4.hope u all do2

ok, i totally don't understand how they can make Zack become a lunatic killer after 2 years working with his colleagues. Did Iraq finally "crack the egg"? How can they make him betray the only friends he has??? How can they write Zack to think that what he did was right?? In summation,

WTF?

Please, I hope they make all of this a really bad dream on the season 4 premiere. Minus the killing Gorgomon thing. he can stay dead

This show didn't jump the shark, it went to an aquarium, stole five sharks, and then just ran over them with a van.

If they were sick of Zack's character then he quits and works somewhere else. A plot line where someone can SENSIBLY be brought back. Opening up creative avenues just appears as a limp excuse in light of the fact that they have not done anything to even attempt to develop Zack as a character, just some references to Naomi in paleontology and short shrift of the iraq storyline.

(1) He isn't a widows son,
(2) this gormagon clearly didn't drop the tooth bomb or put the kid in the pool in 'knight on the grid'
(3) Zack wasn't indoctrinated then (ergo another apprentice at that time)
(4) stealing incisors from the lab, ... not an ionosphere level of genuis
(5) fake funeral
(6) random security risk at fake funeral
If FOX wants to shake things up, why don't they not kill or permanently mar a main character in a finale. Not being absurd would surprise me at this point
