Snap Judgment: 'Sarah Marshall''s hilarious music video

Apr 10, 2008, 01:43 PM | by Simon Vozick-Levinson

Categories: An EW Exclusive!, Film, Music, Snap Judgment

I may be the only person at EW who genuinely, strongly dislikes most of Judd Apatow's oeuvre (except for Talladega Nights and Superbad, both of which I adore). I especially can't stand those ubiquitous billboards for the latest movie he's producing — "YOU SUCK SARAH MARSHALL," "YOU DO LOOK FAT IN THOSE JEANS, SARAH MARSHALL," pretty much any pithy, sorta-misogynist insult plus the name "Sarah Marshall". But you know what? I kinda love this new EW.com exclusive music video from "Infant Sorrow," the fake band fronted by Ms. Marshall's poser-y new boyfriend in the film.

I haven't laughed so hard at a vague, preachy pseudo-protest song since John Mayer's "Waiting on the World to Change"! Seriously, British comedian Russell Brand — prancing here as frontman "Aldous Snow" —  had better get his own starring vehicle soon. EW.com also got a hold of some liner notes allegedly written by Snow, and, well, I'll let the man speak for himself: "This song is a manifesto — we literally do have to do something, and in this case I mean something constructive for the planet. In a way this is the least sexual song I've ever written — although it's still very sexual indeed, I'm hard now while writing this."

Okay then! On that note, how does "We've Got To Do Something" make you all feel?

He looks like Billy Zane, with hair. Amy Winehouse Hair.

I'd just like to agree with the many other posts: I cannot stand the obnoxious 50 million dollar ad campaign for this movie. This song is funny in theory but I really can't believe that anyone's bursting out laughing at anything in it. Hopefully the movie's big Dracula Musical number is funnier.

Booo Judd Apatow!

How did this 'We've Got to do Something' video make me feel, you ask?
It made me feel like turning it off halfway because of it's incoherent lameness.
So this is the new brand of comedy? Lazy. It put me to sleep.

Russell is amazing! His way with language is just hilarious.
I really hope this brings him one step closer to worldwide stardom and that revolution he has been talking about.
Check out his BBC Radio 2 podcast! Hilarious!

Oops. Meant to type "conservation/consumption" in comment below.

Love the "False Untruths Kill". That would be the truth! And the Consume Nothing:Buy Green - neatly sums up the converse/consumption contradictions ever-present in this "genre" of "save the world" songs videos.

Thanks to Scan for the info on the BBC radio podcasts.

And Simon, you can count me in with the "don't get Apatow" crowd.

Love that Russell Brand! Hopefully this movie will open him up to new audiences. Check out his BBC Radio 2 podcast on iTunes.

I think this video is funny, though I am afraid that most won't think so, the same way most people didn't appreciate Dewey Cox. But more importantly, I am glad that there is someone else in the world who thought John Mayers song"Waiting on the World to Change" was uber lame and whiny. Thank you EW!

i can't wait to see this movie!!

i went to wondercon's "forgetting sarah marshall" talk to see kristin bell and jason segal and ended up loving russell brand teh most!!

Jeff Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 06:53 PM EST

Have you really seen a COMMA in one of those Sarah Marshall ads? I haven't. I think the first ad you mention is "inappropriate language" without that comma.

blehhh Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

I don't get the Judd Apatow worship or this guys for that matter.

I tried to count only pelvis visible on screen forward thrusts and I only came up with about 12. I love Fight Back Against Violence. Saw him on Leno the other night and he was hilarious.

And if you aren't checking out the videos and community set up for the show that Sarah Marshall is on, Crime Scene, you are missing out. The videos are awesome, Billy Baldwin is spot on, and almost all the supporting cast has names that are parts of the male reproductive system.

Is there an official pelvic thrust count? if not, there should be.

Laura Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

My personal favorite:
"How can you see
When you are blind?"

But "Sodomize Intolerance" is good too.

Megan Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

I will watch anything with my long time lover Russell in it.

cimagato Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

I don't know... It makes me want to let my soul soar and--and--do something!

ninjac8 Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

yay! Russell Brand! Now I'm totally going to see that movie!

Maggie Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

I LOVE RUSSELL BRAND!!! he is reason enough to see this movie

Elizabeth Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

Well, its not "ballad-y" enough for David Archuletta to take on for "American Idol", but it was still pretty funny. I loved the random school children walking by in the station - I watched the video trying to pick out all the old standbys that are in "those kinds of videos".

Martha Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

It's great that though he's singing about how we have to do something to save the earth, he's gyrating suggestively and crawling along the sidewalk. Dan, I liked "Sodomize Intolerance" but laughed out loud at "Consume Nothing/Buy Green."

Antoinette Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

I too do not really care for anything from the Judd Apatow ouvre, but I must confess I plan on seeing this movie for one reason and one reason alone; Russell Brand. We attended WonderCon in San Francisco last month and during the panel for Forgetting Sarah Marshall he was so funny that I totally forgot who else was starring in the movie and could only focus on him. Please someone give this guy more work in America so we can see him more. Was he crass? Yes. But he was so funny and self effacing that it did not matter. When someone asked him if it was hard working on a film in a country where he was not that famous he went on a five minute tirade about how it was hard because since he was not famous he actually had to date and talk to girls to get them to have sex with him. Priceless, (but maybe you had to be there)?

Mozz Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

not that funny.

monica Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

i love those posters that i see all over town, but this video was more annoying than funny. i wonder how the real sarah marshall's all over the US feel about those posters. lol

Dan Daoust Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

I've never wished anything more than I wish I had come up with "Sodomize Intolerance."
